Anne of the Island Book Club: Chapter 29

Inspired by the meaning of pink roses in Diana's bouquet, here are some more meaningful flowers and plants for our friends:

Anne says pink roses are "the flowers of love and faith." I looked up a couple of Victorian flower language manuals to see what they had to say about pink roses – not much, it turns out.

Roses in general always signify love, but Language of Flowers by Kate Greenaway doesn't mention pink roses at all, though it lists countless other varieties (some of which are pink, but be careful – if you give someone a pink dog rose, for instance, you're sending them a message about pleasure and pain...) The other sources I looked at tell me pink roses mean happiness. But the language of flowers is hardly an exact science, so love and faith is good, too!

So Diana has her pink roses, and Anne wears lilies-of-the-valley in her hair. Greenaway's book tells me lilies-of-the-valley mean return of happiness, but I found another flower that might be a better fit for Anne here: according to Greenaway again, a bud of white rose symbolises heart ignorant of love.

Interesting that Anne is wearing a white dress, too – I thought anyone else but the bride wearing white to a wedding would've been a huge no-no ever since white wedding dresses became the norm (except for maybe cute little five-year-old flower girls), but apparently not?

But oh no – Anne notices that Gilbert is looking rather thin. Surely this is not an important detail or foreshadowing of anything sinister to come.

"Anne laughed and sighed. She felt very old and mature and wise—which showed how young she was." This is a quote I've often found myself thinking about. There is some truth to it, I believe.

Here's the poem Gilbert quotes at the end of the chapter. It's said he quotes it "practically", but I wonder if that's really everything there is to that. "Hope’s like a little silver song / Fading in a breath."

The chapter ends on a rather melancholy note, so here's a flower to go with it: meadow saffron says my best days are past.

Edited to add: I can't remember if his looks were ever described, and I'm not generally one to think about how characters in books look like – but I just realised that for whatever reason, I've always imagined Fred Wright is blonde, and also one of those unfortunate young men whose hair has already started thinning at the age of 21. Does he have canonical looks? If not, how do you guys imagine him to look like?

🌼Flower Meditation🌼

Today at my religious group, the kids group did a flower meditation! They came and told the adult group a little about it when they were done. I came home and looked up more about it so that I could share it as an activity for those of us who are kids inside and can’t participate in actual kids spaces.

This website breaks it down really well, but I will summarize for anyone who doesn’t want to/can’t read the whole thing!

Flower meditation is the act of meditating while gazing/looking at a flower. It originates from Taoism and is about exchanging spiritual energy with another living being. You can do this activity anywhere, regardless of noise level or how busy it is, since the flower will be your focus! (However it is also ok if you would prefer to be somewhere private. Shy people and people with attention disabilities might benefit from this!) You receive the flower with your eyes instead of “taking” it with your gaze. The idea is to let the beauty of the flower flow through your whole body. You are also sending the flower gratitude at the same time/at the end.

The kids at my religious group then drew pictures of flowers and shared them with us at the end.

I think this could be a really nice meditation to do for littles. I feel like you don’t even have to use a flower. Maybe a leaf or another plant. Or sometimes I like to think about similar meditation ideas when I’m watching the birds or even my cats! Just sharing the earth and your focus with another living being for a period of time, and really sitting there experiencing that.

And then like the kids in the class, you could draw a picture afterwards! Either of your flower (or other living being) or try to draw your feelings or thoughts you had.

I took some pictures of flowers I saw in my neighborhood in case there aren’t any flowers where you are! Instead of meditating on the living flower itself, you can also meditate about how we are connected because I took these pictures to help people participate! Or any other ideas you think of.

I will also share my drawing that I did based on the flowers :)

It was really fun to explore my neighborhood looking for flowers. It was extra fun and nice to think about sharing them with others so we could all participate in an activity together.

I am not a Taoist so I know I will not be able to fully grasp or explain the religious/philosophical ideas behind this, but I hope I did OK with what I do understand. I think fostering an awareness of our connection to the other living beings around us is a good thing, and this type of meditation seemed like a very accessible way to do that for many people.

I have also been thinking of modifying seasonal homeschool lessons for littles as well. I know my inner child really misses getting to do hands-on learning about the world around me, so I’d love to plan more activities for us all to do! Maybe something about the Spring Equinox and Easter?

This is hard, because there's so many blogs I'd put here, but ultimately I'm going to go with @platiinums. I think Nik's wording choices and turn of phrase are spectacular, and it makes reading their threads (even if they're not with me) a true joy. It's so easy to get the picture of what's happening and how the characters think and feel from the way they write, and its so entertaining.

I don't really keep track of many resource blogs tbh. @poohsources is good - that's where I got the template for the card I'm setting up, and @tutorgirlrph is who I commissioned for the last two sets of icons I needed and they were great to work with.

I'm really proud of the length of time I've been able to stick out writing since I came back - I wasn't sure, last October, if the community was still here or if I was going to fizzle out or whatever but I stuck it out, and now we're not far off a whole year and I've got my circle and I'm still doing something I enjoy.

OK SO I DID ANSWER THIS MORE THOROUGHLY HERE ….. but !!! let me think of some other things we do for each other .. :3c hmmmm . suguru always makes me cups of tea/coffee !!!! depending on my mood …. and Exactly how i like them. i have some kind of oral fixation where i Cannot focus at alllll on anything ever unless i have a drink in hand — so he’s always carrying around a water bottle or something else for me to sip on . and never minds making me a fresh cup when we’re at home together <3 …….

as for me !!! i send him pictures all throughout the day …. of random things i see, like a cat on the other side of the street, or freshly blossomed cherry trees, or my lunch / dinner (<- he is very particular that i do this whenever he finds out i’ve been eating at odd hours again :’3 …) he’s a bit of a helicopter parent so if he doesn’t hear from me every couple hours or so, he gets kind of anxious . it reassures him and cheers him up just reading my silly texts or looking at the photos and feeling like he’s right there with me (especially during longer workdays) …. <3

and well . to be honest i’m a serial ghoster (NOT on purpose i’m just awful at checking up on messaging apps regularly T_T every person in my life can attest to this…..) so he knows it’s something i put Effort into doing just for him, even if i’m leaving everyone else on read … and that makes him smug LMAO
