Josh Futturman has always had a crush on his beautiful coworker, the sharp, sexy scientist he thought he could only dream of talking to.

Part Eight: Gift Exchange
“Are you sure you wanna go to my house? Not, like, a Taco Bell parking lot, or Guantanamo Bay, or something?” Josh asked hopefully for the umpteenth time even after they had arrived. “You really don’t have to meet my parents on the first date.”
“I’m sure, Josh,” Brynne laughed as they got out of the car. “Besides. I like meeting people’s parents. Especially when they’re nice.”
“You say that, until they start trying to convince you to move in.”
“If they show me your baby pictures, I’ll rent a U-Haul.”
“Oh, God,” Josh sighed, dreading the interaction as he unlocked the front door.
Josh opened the door for Brynne, as the two of them entered the house to find that the Futturmans were hosting a small get-together, which Josh had completely forgot about until now. Everyone was looking at them; Josh’s parents, the neighbors, and Josh’s Uncle Barry.
“Hey, Joshy!” Diane got up to greet him, as Gabe followed her. “Is this the famous Dr. Brynne?!”
“Mom!” Josh complained, mortified.
“Hi,” Brynne smiled, shaking both of their hands.
“Welcome, Brynne,” Gabe Futturman smiled warmly, “Nice to meet you! You’re always welcome at the Futturman house.”
“Thank you,” she smiled warmly. “It’s so nice to meet you. Josh has told me so much about you,” she teased him.
“All good, I hope?” Gabe chuckled.
“Yeah!” she lied.
“Oh, you’re so beautiful!” Diane exclaimed, “Could I get a picture of the two of you later?”
“Mom!” Josh gasped.
“Yeah, sure!” Brynne nodded.
“Come meet everyone, Brynne,” she led them over to the guests, “I’ve been telling them all about you!”
“I’m so sorry,” Josh whispered to her.
She just laughed as his parents led them into the living room.
“Everyone, this is Josh’s date, Dr. Brynne Johansson,” Gabe introduced her. “She’s the head of the research department at Kronish Labs.”
Josh was horrified at his parents’ lack of subtlety.
“Hi, happy holidays,” Brynne waved to everyone.
“Awooga,” Josh’s newly divorced uncle, Barry, stared at her.
Josh made a face, disgusted by the behavior.
“Just a warning about Uncle Barry,” he whispered, “You’re gonna want to avoid him right about… two whiskeys ago.”
“Duly noted,” Brynne murmured as they sat down, joining the party.
“Brynne, these are our neighbors, Melinda and Julius Seneca,” Gabe introduced the couple as they waved kindly. “And this is Josh’s uncle, my brother, Barry.”
“Well. How you doing?” Barry slurred as he jumped up to shake her hand.
“Uh…” Brynne looked to Josh for help as he mouthed a hasty apology. “I’m good,” she grimaced as she gave him her hand.
Josh watched in horror as his Uncle Barry took her hand, raising it up to his lips to kiss it, mouth still open.
“Oh,” she smiled, trying her hardest to be polite for Josh’s sake. “I take it you had a Philly cheesesteak for lunch?”
The bald man chuckled deeply, eyes still locked on Brynne.
“Barry,” Josh’s father sighed at his brother,
“What?” the drunk man asked defensively.
“Leave Josh’s girlfriend alone,” his mother chimed in.
“Mom! Oh my God!” Josh complained, at a loss for words.
“What?” she questioned.
“Come on, you two. Have a seat,” Gabe smiled invitingly.
Josh tried to cover his look of distress with an attentive smile.
“So, how did you and Josh meet?” the neighbor, Melinda Seneca, asked curiously.
“Oh, it’s not that interesting,” Josh assured her with a chuckle.
He looked to Brynne, gauging her expression off the look on her face to make sure that she was okay, which he had now made a habit of doing.
“We just met at work.”
“Yeah, so Brynne, I hear you’re a doctor?” Julius asked.
“A doctor of science, yes,” Brynne clarified.
“Really? At your age?” his ears practically perked up.
“Julius,” his wife laughed, embarrassed.
“No, it’s okay,” she gestured, “I got my PhD when I was twenty-three.”
“Wow. That’s impressive,” the man nodded. “You just be some kind of genius.”
“Not really,” Brynne laughed.
“No, she is,” Josh insisted with a grin, kindly resting his hand on her back, “She’s the head of the research department at Kronish Labs,” he said proudly.
“Wow,” Melinda smiled.
“Then what’s she doing with a janitor?” Barry asked from the corner with a mouth full.
Everyone slowly looked at him in horror, as Josh swallowed awkwardly.
“Barry!” Gabe said, aghast.
Josh’s parents looked at one another awkwardly, unsure of how to handle the situation. The Senecas seemed equally uncomfortable.
“You apologize to Josh right now!” his father yelled.
“No, Dad, it’s okay,” Josh avoided his gaze.
“No, it’s not. You don’t talk to family like that,” his father insisted.
Brynne looked at Josh sadly, seeing the way the comment affected him.
“Hey,” she whispered, taking his hand.
Josh looked up at her in surprise, touched by the gesture.
“We don’t have to stay down here if you don’t want to,” she whispered.
“Yeah,” Josh said quietly, clearing his throat as they stood. “Mom. Dad. We’re going upstairs.”
“Joshy,” his mother said as she stood, feeling sorry for him.
“It’s okay, Mom. We’ll come down in a little bit,” Josh told them, turning to the neighbors, “See you guys later.”
He took Brynne’s hand as the two of them walked up the stairs together, heading up to Josh’s room as he closed the door, sighing as he flopped onto his bed, sitting with his face in his hands.
“Hey. You okay?” Brynne asked, sitting beside him.
“Yeah,” he sighed, stopping to look at her, “I’m fine. I just… needed a break.”
“I guess we’re both having the same kinda night,” she pointed out, earning a small smile.
“Brynne?” Josh said finally.
“Yeah?”
He sat up straight, just staring right at her.
“I think you’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
“Stop,” she chuckled, only half meaning it.
“No, really. I just had one of those… moments. You know?” he asked.
“What kind of moments?”
“I don’t know,” he thought, “Just one of those kind of things where you’re just feeling like shit, and then you stop, and you look at something… Like a butterfly outside, or a kid laughing, and you just… You realize the beauty in things. I saw it. In you.”
She smiled as she caressed his face with her thumb. “You’re very, very adorable,” she told him. “And I like you. More than I’ve ever liked anyone after knowing them only this long.”
“That… That makes me really happy,” he allowed himself a smile. “Are you happy?”
“Yeah, I think I am,” Brynne chuckled softly.
“Good. I like making people happy,” Josh nodded.
“I’ll make you happy,” she told him, resting a hand on his thigh as she leaned in, pausing for a moment.
Josh froze, looking her in the eye, too afraid to move. He thought he might spook her, like a deer in headlights. But her resolve seemed to be strengthening. Taking the bewildered expression on his face for an enthusiastic ‘yes’, she pressed a kiss to his lips, the two of them existing purely in the moment.
Brynne threw her arms around his neck, losing her hands in Josh’s hair as he sighed with contentment. He tentatively pulled her closer to him, gaining confidence as she allowed him to hold above her waist.
It was a beautiful kiss, exactly what Josh had imagined. The kiss was deep, but not inherently making out. It was sweet, but not one-dimensional, and charged, but not dirty. Josh knew it was the kind of kiss that only existed in books and movies. He felt as if this right here could’ve been his happily ever after.
Regretfully, he pulled away, looking her in the eyes just to double check that she was enjoying it.
“I like you so much,” he breathed, looking at her in the most precious manner.
He was adorable like a puppy, looking up at its master for approval. Brynne realized he truly did just look happy to be there.
“Joshy!”
Josh nearly jumped up at the interruption, his mom opening the door with a plate made up of charcuterie items.
“Mom! What the hell!” Josh exclaimed, as Brynne just sat there awkwardly, offering her a smile.
“I just came up to bring you guys some snacks,” Diane Futturman said, politely leaving the plate on Josh’s desk. “I thought you might be hungry, after that fancy party, you know how they always just serve finger food...”
“Jesus fucking Christ, Mom! What the fuck! Please knock next time!” Josh cried in embarrassment. “We’re trying to talk!”
Brynne studied him, trying to determine whether or not he was okay.
“Okay, okay, honey, I’m sorry,” she apologized, hurrying out of the room to leave them be.
Josh looked incredibly guilty after realizing what he’d done.
“Oh, God,” he sighed, returning to his sulking on the bed. “Fuck… I shouldn’t have reacted like that. Fuck!”
“No, you shouldn’t have,” Brynne agreed. “But you can just tell her that. I’m sure she’d understand.”
“I guess,” Josh murmured, not seeming comforted. “I just… Never thought I’d be one of those assholes that yells at their mom.”
“So why did you become one of those assholes?” Brynne Johansson asked helpfully.
“I don’t know, I just panicked,” he groaned. “I just… We were having such a nice moment, and I was afraid that ruined it. Like you thought me living with my parents was weird, and you never wanted to see me again.”
“I’d be a pretty shitty date if I did,” she pointed out. “I definitely am not the kind of person who’d be bothered by that.”
“No, I know you’re not,” Josh sighed. “I just… Fuck, I just wanted everything to be perfect.”
“I know,” she nodded, “But did you ever stop to think that maybe, at the moment, everything is?”
That was more than enough for Josh to allow himself to enjoy the rest of the night.
“Why don’t we start over?” Brynne suggested, trying to put him at ease.
“Yeah, starting over… That’s a good idea,” Josh nodded. “What, what do you wanna talk about?” he asked.
“Why don’t you give me a tour of your room?” she asked him, standing up to look around. “I’ve always wondered what it looks like.”
“Really?” Josh nearly shouted in excitement, quickly realizing he sounded like an excited eleven year-old boy as he cleared his throat. “…Really?”
“Yeah,” she nodded, slowly tracing the shelves with her finger. “What’s this stuff? It looks cool.”
This, naturally, launched into a ten minute spiel by Josh about all the different collectibles and other valuable items he owned. As he spoke, his eyes would light up and his mouth would curl upwards in an endearing smile. Brynne could see just how adorably passionate Josh was, and how truly excited he was to actually have someone who genuinely wanted to listen to what he had to say. It only made her want him more.
Brynne gladly allowed Josh to show her every nook and cranny of his room, and explain every item that inhabited it, taking it all in with pleasure. It must’ve been thirty minutes before he came to a conclusion, but she definitely didn’t mind. As Josh took a moment to rearrange the things displayed on his desk, Brynne observed the way he fearfully kept his eyes on the desk as he bent down, trying his best not to stare up at her.
Observing him, Brynne thought it would be best if she took the initiative herself.
“This is where I keep all the old stuff,” Jost explained as he organized the drawer under his desk.
“What’s that?” Brynne asked, easily maneuvering her zipper.
“What’s what?” Josh asked distractedly, still concentrated on his desk.
“What’s that? On the floor, behind you?” she asked him.
Josh frowned, not sure off the top of his head what she was referring to as he turned around, kneeling on the ground and looking at what had been behind him. He didn’t recognize the object at first.
“Wait, what is that?” he asked himself out loud, picking it up, “Is that…?”
He very slowly looked petrified with eyes wide like saucers when he saw her.
“Oh. It’s… It’s your dress,” he said in a panic, his heart beating faster than ever before.
He looked up at her from where he was kneeling on the floor, unable to speak.
“Is this okay?” she asked calmly.
“More than okay,” Josh looked her up and down hungrily, “Hachi…”
“If you say ‘machi’…” she warned.
“Sorry,” he apologized hastily, “Sorry. It’s just… you’re not wearing a bra. Or underwear,” he thought out loud.
Josh was stunned, to say the least. Not only was this beyond what he would’ve imagined, it was also like something right out of his imagination. A small part of him still thought he might be dreaming, or hallucinating from inhaling too many cleaning products at work.
“Wow,” he stared, barely able to process. “You… You’re a goddess,” he spoke softly as his eyes savored every inch of her body.
“When does the worship part come in?” she wondered with a grin.
“Right fucking now,” he gasped, desperately grabbing at her thighs.
His hands squeezed her thighs as he knelt in front of her, face buried between them as he silently wished for this to never end. Josh happily nipped at her thighs with eager, scattered kisses, sighing into her soft skin as he indulged in her. Even where he was, her skin smelled like the heaven he’d first experienced when she got into his car.
He pressed excited little kisses all over her skin, never tiring of it at all.
“I could die right now,” Josh sighed, voice breathy with ecstasy.
“Maybe we don’t have to die to know what paradise is like,” she remarked.
“Maybe not. But just in case, I know exactly what I want my last meal to be.”
Josh looked up at her, eyes wide with a strange innocence as he silently begged and pleaded with her to take control. Brynne sat down on the bed behind her, leaning back as she crossed one of her legs over the other. Before he could stop himself, Josh threw himself on the ground in front of her black high heels, which were still on her feet. This, he thought, made everything even better.
Josh whined impatiently as he sloppily placed his kisses all the way up her body, from her ankles, to her calves, to her thighs, to right above her navel. Everywhere but the one place he really wanted to be.
Observing him happily, Brynne softly brushed her hand over his hair, watching him look up at her as he moaned impatiently.
“Please, Brynne, please, please, please,” he begged her.
“What?” she asked somewhat teasingly. “What do you want?”
“Please, can I, please… I really wanna eat your pussy,” he pleaded, his voice thick with an irresistible whiny quality, “Can I, please?”
Brynne raised an eyebrow in surprise.
“That’s what you want?”
“Oh, more than anything!” he begged her with his hands resting on her thighs. “I’ll do anything! Please, Brynne, please… I wanna make you feel good.”
He looked like a starved man, hungry for anything at all.
“You really want to?” she asked him.
“Yes, please, I’ve never done this before,” he confided, “I mean… I’ve done this, but not that,” he explained himself.
“Go ahead,” Brynne murmured, amused as she played with his hair.
He couldn’t believe what was happening. He was really about to eat Brynne Johansson’s pussy. Beyond pleased with her approval, Josh excitedly parted her legs, kissing the sensitive skin on her inner thighs as he closed his eyes, savoring every moment of it. She sat back, watching him as he teased, caressing and squeezing her thick, pillowy thighs as his kisses slowly became more wet and more aggressive.
Finding it made things even easier, Josh rested her knees on his shoulders as he dove in, liking the feeling of her thighs closing in around his head in pleasure.
“Please,” Josh begged her, “Just fucking suffocate me.”
Brynne felt she could only oblige as he got tantalizingly close to where he needed to be, suckling on her lower stomach right before he pressed a hard kiss right against her clit, locating it with impressive ease. The feeling was surprising and tingly as he made contact with the bundle of nerves for the first time. Brynne roughly grabbed a handful of his brown hair, signaling to him that he’d done a good job as he groaned.
“That feels so nice, Josh,” she cooed, her voice alone enough to make him finish as he instinctively rutted into the bed.
“Fuck,” he gasped, looking her right in the eyes.
“You wanna do a good job for me?” she asked him.
“Yes, please,” he moaned, “Please… Let me be a good boy for you, I’ll do anything. Whatever you want,” nodded vigorously.
She closed her legs around him as he sloppily licked up and down the sensitive area, maximizing her pleasure as he began to gently tease the opening with his middle finger. Brynne sighed with relief as he finally closed his mouth around her clit again, sucking relentlessly as he stared up at her, his eyelids heavy with pleasure. He was about as pussy drunk as he could get.
She pulled him in by the hair, forcibly holding him there as he sucked on her clit with sleepy eyes.
“You’re such a good boy for me, Joshy,” she gasped in excitement.
Josh could’ve passed away from how lucky he felt. He’d never even been able to imagine himself in this position, or imagine her in this position, come to think of it.
“You’re a fucking goddess,” he hummed against her center. “I’d do anything for you. You’re a princess. Fuck, please come on my face,” he insisted.
“You’re so desperate for me, it’s so fucking hot.”
Brynne held him close to her as she threw her head back, gasping aloud as he inserted his finger. The way he dragged his finger downward as he entered her made her feel even more full. She laughed softly as he instinctively continued doing the same thing, dragging his fingers downward as he shamelessly ate her out.
“Fuck, you’re such a good boy,” she hissed.
“Yeah, that’s right, I’m your good boy!” he nodded, tongue flicking against her clit as he desperately played with her g-spot. “Fuck, you’re so fucking wet, I don’t deserve this! I’ll be your good boy! I’m your good little boy!”
Josh continued to stare up at her as he licked up and down in slow, torturous stripes, curling his fingers inside of her.
“You’re mine,” she sighed, beginning to choke him with her thighs.
“That’s right, I’m your good boy!” he whined into her. “You can do whatever you want to me! I’ll love it!” he promised.
“Such a good little boy, fuck,” she murmured, feeling herself getting close to a climax as her hand moved from his hair to around his throat, “You’re my good little slut.”
“Yes! Fuck! Yes,” Josh moaned loudly as he sucked, ecstatic at the feeling of her hand wrapped around his throat, “I’m your slut! I’m your little slut, all yours!”
Brynne tightened her grip on his throat, watching him as his eyes practically rolled to the back of his head.
“Fuck,” he lapped his tongue against her hungrily, “Come on my face! Please come on my face! Come all over my tongue!” he whined.
“You’re such a dirty little slut. Such a good little slut,” she breathed.
Slowly, she came to a finish, watching him grow excited as she grew even wetter.
“Good boy,” Brynne laughed, watching him in disbelief as he lapped it all up, enjoying every second of it.
He was high on her praise, forgetting the idea of shame entirely as he cleaned her up completely, not leaving a single drop. He looked up at her, eyes widened. He sighed exhaustedly, his eyes growing heavy as he was finally satisfied with himself.
“Did I do a good job?” Josh asked hopefully.

In my opinion, instead of constant clamoring for Greek mythology retellings where largely or entirely villainous or monstrous female figures are reinvented as heroic, what we need is more media which acknowledges any goddesses from outside the conventional groupings of “main” Olympians (which is something variable, the version of the dodecatheon from Olympia had the personified river Alpheios and the  Charites in it , but that’s beside the point). Multiple of them actually have well defined, more or less consistent characters in myths and it’s mind-boggling that they are losing the quest for popcultural relevance with “what if Medusa was the central protagonist of Greek mythology” text posts. Off the top of my head, some good examples of such goddesses would be:
Hecate, who despite being portrayed firmly positively in her two main mythical roles, in the Homeric Hymn Demeter (where she helps Demeter look for Persephone and is later tasked with escorting her on her annual journey) and in the Theogony (where she aids Zeus and co. during the titanomachy), only ever appears as a villain in modern media, often with the point of reference being godawful new age literature or worse. The only two works of media which actually try to do something broadly accurate to her character in myths would be Theia Mania and, of all things, Touhou.
Selene, who basically doesn’t exist as a separate character in modern media because her gimmick has been reassigned to Artemis. To be fair, it’s been this way for centuries, but she actually has a plenty to offer if treated as separate. She has a very distinct iconography (lunar crescent behind the shoulders looks so cool), and at least according to Seneca a very warm relationship with her brother (in his Phaedra he fills in for her every now and then so that she can spend time with Endymion). There’s also a bonkers addition to the Labors of Heracles where she’s credited with raising Nemean Lion from the moon.
Iris, who acts as a messenger of the gods (or specifically Hera) pretty often, including during the titanomachy. She also has a unique genealogy, and an “evil twin”, Arke, who acted as the messenger for the titans and to my knowledge plays no other role anywhere otherwise. One of the only references to offerings made to Iris mentions cheesecake which one surely could turn into a personality quirk if the actual literary texts are not enough, too.
Eos, dawn, the OTHER sister of Helios, who persistently appears in myths indicating she was the one female deity sort of trying to keep up with male gods in the “romancing mortals” department. One of her lovers turned into a cicada because she forgot to ask for eternal youth when asking for eternal life for him which feels like it came out of a modern parody.
Styx, who I think basically is entirely forgotten as a personified deity in modern fiction, despite being portrayed as one of Zeus’ key allies in the Theogony, and as the mother of his various minor courtiers. You’d think a character as edgy as the personification of the arguably most famous location in the underworld would not be entirely absent from mythology adaptations but alas, she basically is.
I would also like Thetis to not be portrayed as antagonistic in media, both of her highest profile adaptations in recent years essentially are. Thetis is the best character in the Iliad and I’d like to see an adaptation which actually keeps the scene where she brings Briareus to Olympus, but it feels like Iliad adaptations are often ashamed of having gods in there.
If you want to dig deeper, there are oddities like Malis/Maliya, a craftsmanship(?) goddess from Lydia and Lycia treated as analogous to Athena back at home, but seemingly as a river nymph in Greece (I worked on her wiki page recently).

Before and After
Samuel Scott Gray, South Carolina inmate 383041, born 2000, incarceration intake February 2020 at age 19, scheduled for release April 2028
Assault and Battery by a Mob, Burglary
In South Carolina, the crime of assault and battery by mob is defined as any act of violence inflicted by a group of 2 or more persons which results in either: (1) death, (2) serious bodily injury and/or (3) bodily injury to an individual or group of individuals. A “mob” occurs when two or more people assemble, without the authority to do so under law, for the premeditated purpose and intent to commit an act of violence against the person of an individual or the person of a group of individuals.
In April 2019, a man and a teen boy were charged for their connection to a crime spree in Oconee County, which resulted in an officer being injured.
According to an Oconee County Sheriff’s Office news release, a 15-year-old boy stole a relative’s vehicle and then went to pick up a 14-year-old girl.
The two teens then met up with another person who gave them a black Dodge Neon, and informed them the vehicle was stolen.
The juveniles then picked up Samuel Scott Gray.
According to the release, Gray and the teen boy tried to rob another person by force outside of the Bountyland Quick Stop in Bountyland .
Two hours later, Gray and the two teens drove the stolen vehicle into a ravine on Greenfield Road and Vine Road in Westminster.
According to the release, Good Samaritans made contact with the trio and tried to help them remove the vehicle from the ravine.
The Good Samaritans then saw that the suspects appeared to be impaired and said they were going to call police, which resulted in the suspects assaulting them and leaving the scene.
The suspects then crashed the vehicle near the area of Armstrong Road and Bypass 123 in Seneca. Gray reportedly ran from the scene and the teen boy resisted arrest, injuring an officer.
The teen girl stayed inside the vehicle.
Gray and the two teens were arrested.
The injured officer was taken to Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
Gray was charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery and third-degree assault and battery.
The 15-year-old boy was charged with grand larceny, runaway, attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery, possession of a stolen vehicle/receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, two counts of third-degree assault and battery, possession of tobacco and possesion of a controlled substance.
The girl was not charged.

hi jlrrt. sometimes i wonder, what Agrippa thought about Augustus exiling his daughter (and Agrippa's wife) Julia? exiling his and Julia's daughter Julia Minor and ordered her newborn baby to be exposed? also exiling and (allegedly) ordered Postumus' execution? i know he was dead at the time when all of that happened but i just curious. I bet he knew about how Augustus can be ruthless (considering he was Augustus' childhood friend and support him since beginning) but sometimes i wonder if a thought that Augustus could be ruthless to his own family crossed his mind. i just realized when i type this that none of Agrippa and Julia's children ended up having good ending (other two sons died young from illness or wound complication while their other daughter was exiled during Tiberius' reign) (it seemed that Agrippa's daughters from his previous marriages were luckier).
I'm going to start calling you Pliny Anon, because I'm pretty sure Pliny the Elder had the same thoughts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pliny, Natural History, LBL 352: 535-537
(I think Pliny's being a bit harsh on the girls here, and perhaps overstating the tension between Agrippa and Augustus.)
I believe Augustus actually said at one point that "If Agrippa and Maecenas had been alive, I wouldn't have [exiled Julia]". (Seneca, de Beneficiis 6.32.) That plus Agrippa's own decision not to call Julia out for her affairs leads me to think he would've been a moderating influence in Augustus' later years.
I also suspect Postumus would've grown up differently - perhaps much better - if Agrippa had lived to his sixties. It can't have been good for the kid to see his mother exiled, and his only father figure (Augustus) reject and exile him. This might have been exacerbated by Augustus' tendency to put a lot of pressure on his kids, while Agrippa appears to have been more easygoing. So, who knows? Maybe Postumus would've been named "Marcus" and never been exiled at all!

Hey, first of all let me say your writing is amazing. Absolutely, hands down amazing. You truly bring Hayffie to life every single time. Begin Again, Tolerate It and Exile are some of my favorite songs, I'd love to see what you can come up with. Especially in Begin Again, it would be really cool if we could see Effie's other love interests-romances (what are your thoughts on Seneca?) and how they correlate to Haymitch.
hello!
thank u so much for ur kind words omg they absolutely made my morning!! exile and begin again are also some of MY fav songs so i definitely hope to get around to them at some point in the future :) i'm less sure about tolerate it because i'm not sure how i'd approach it in relation to hayffie, but who knows maybe i'll figure something out!
on the topic of seneca, i know his relationship with effie is mostly collective fandom delusion but i LOVE it anyway. i think effie crying over katniss hanging the seneca crane dummy in CF lends some credibility to the headcanon, plus i think it's entirely plausible that they both came up in very close capitol social circles (think late-19th century upper-class new york, the 400 families type of vibe). i like to imagine that effie and seneca were pretty close when they were younger, they eventually dated, and then they sort of grew apart as they got older but they still have the occasional on-again-off-again situation, especially since they work in the same industry. i think in some weird twisted way they're like a safe space for eachother, you know? their relationship is something they know they can always come back to when they need it. i would say that the most i've ever written about effie + seneca is in vi. no body, no crime, but i definitely hope to include more glimpses of them in future!
i do think effie's romantic relationships outside of haymitch are a really good way to explore her character more. ngl i have a pretty detailed list of minor ocs that i use for effie's non-haymitch relationships (cassius gallopetal, glint, old man maximus, and antoni are all the ones who've made brief appearances i believe) because i think it's suchhh an interesting way to explore not only who effie is at different stages in her life, but also how she conceives about relationships / love outside of haymitch. so i definitely hope to explore those things more in the future :)
thank u sooo much for ur kinds words and ur questions, i love talking about this kind of stuff. i hope u have a lovely day <3

Hank approached the Durand residence expecting to find nothing worse than a snoring couple and a girlchild too proud to admit that she was tired after a very short night.
Tumblr media
He wasn't prepared to get jumped at by a gremlin the moment he entered the dimly lit floor. The sharp pain at the side of his head. Or the cry of triumph from the creature.
Tumblr media
Malia: "I got one! I got one, mother! Much luck for me in the new year!"
Hank: "You know, Tawit, I playfully pulled my share of girls' braids as a kid, thinking nothing of it. If getting my hair pulled out alive is the proper punishment for my mischief, then I stoically accept that."
Tawit: "Ah, right, you wouldn't know, being new to New France... New England. My people have a custom, that at New Year's day the False-Faces go from door to door to bless the house. Children lie in wait to pull some hair out of the masks for good luck. With you not wearing a mask, well, you felt it."
Tumblr media
Malia then excitedly told the visitor about the False-Face pudding that her mother had prepared for this day even though, living with the european settlers and not at a Seneca community, the Durands hadn't expected a shaman to come to their door today.
Malia: “Have you blessed the house already, Mister? I didn’t hear or see. Or will you do it yet?”
Hank: “I gave you a minor charm against bad luck when I knocked at your door. Wouldn’t know how to coax forth good luck. If I tried, with my limited understanding of magic, it might backfire terribly.”
Gynthwachia: "What are you, exactly, Hank? You come here from across the ocean, wielding magic powers of a scope we haven't seen in generations, but you say you are no shaman, witch or scholar of the occult."
Hank: "I may find out this year."

It is kinda weird how despite repeated efforts across multiple centuries, doing philosophy in Classical Latin just... didn't take? Like, Scipio was probably involved in some sort of homegrown philosophical project if Cicero can be believed, and Cicero himself explicitly was doing that. But so was Seneca a century later, and a yet full century after that Aulus Gellius can publish his school notebooks from Athens written in Latin as some sort of curiosity. Everyone in the empire who wanted to philosophize did it in Greek and when Greek became scarce in the West they seem to have simply stopped doing philosophy.
Uh, the early Latin church fathers don't really count but Augustine is the only one who sticks out and he got it from somewhere else anyway, and by the time Boethius translates some of Aristotle into Latin the Western Roman Empire has collapsed and nobody is doing much formal "philosophy" as such there for a few hundred years.
The first major original Latin philosopher by this standard is probably John Scotus Eriugena? Who did know Greek but lived in the 9th century in Ireland and France and so probably at least didn't learn Greek philosophy directly from anyone who was still alive; his primary source seems to have been the Corpus Dionysiacum, a set of Neoplatonic pseudepigrapha attributed to a minor character from the bible that he also translated into Latin. Which meant that Neoplatonism was finally successfully transmitted to the Latin world, through a series of people who didn't even know who Plato was. That was 1000 years after they started trying, and it doesn't even seem to have happened on purpose.

Long before Kimberle Crenshaw developed the concept of intersectionality to give it a name the concept existed in practice:
And its very first manifestation was the first wave feminist movement, which was intersected across the Atlantic with abolitionism. In the 19th Century, boosted by industrialism liberating society from the older agrarian system, the idea of free soil and free labor took off as a new moral foundation for the world. And make no mistake it was new. It was also a minority that had no small shortage of radicalism as we'd see it today. And then as now radical movements could and did fracture and develop deep faultlines over 'radicalism for me but not for thee.'
The Seneca Falls Convention was a product of this, and it created its own faultlines in turn as Black activists like Maria Stewart and Isabella Baumfree (more commonly known as Sojourner Truth) had very distinct views of what they aimed for, where white women were at the time content to get the vote in the impression that voting alone solved all problems.

Play 20: Phaedra's Love by Sarah Kane
First performed: Gate Theatre, London, 1996
Quote: "There's a thing between us, an awesome fucking thing, can you feel it? It burns. Meant to be. We were. Meant to be." (Phaedra)
Stage direction: [Opens her mouth. No sound comes out.]
Notable cast: the original Gate production included Andrew Scott in a minor role. Laurence Penry-Jones starred in a 2005 revival at the Old Vic.
Notes: Only Kane's second play, Phaedra's Love was commissioned by the Gate Theatre, who asked for a drama inspired by a classical text. Reworking Seneca's Phaedra, Kane produced a clipped, precise distillation of tragedy as narrative. A paean to self-destruction which comments on voyeurism, faith and the inadequacies of love; critical reception was muted when compared to the histrionic moralising that greeted her first play, Blasted (1995). Featuring scenes of astonishing violence and horror, contemporary readings often focus on the brutality and nihilism of Kane's dialogue - but they're missing an extraordinary tenderness which unfolds alongside it. A masterful, troubling work from one of the greatest (and most sorely missed) voices of a generation of theatre.
Read: for the first time, but definitely not the last.
#100plays#phaedra's love#sarah kane#modern drama#modern theatre#seneca#phaedra#andrew scott#laurence penry jones#gate theatre#Kane was just 25 when she wrote Phaedra's Love‚ but her work was already both highly regarded by some champions in the established theatre#(Edward Bond was a mentor of sorts‚ Pinter an admirer) whilst simultaneously provoking outrage among critics and audiences#a remarkable work from an extraordinary playwright‚ one of the most significant voices in British theatre and a burning visionary whose#untimely death robbed us of who knows what kind of incendiary work. Sarah's work has been much reevaluated and appraised in the years since#she took her own life‚ and her current critical standing is beyond anything she could have imagined in her own lifetime; but still academic#work on her texts focus on the perceived nihilism and bleakness of her work‚ equating the graphic violence and strong language with her own#struggles with depression. i think there is some truth there‚ certainly‚ but what I think is missed is the flipside: the tenderness in the#scenes between Hippolytus and Strophe is rarely written about with as much zeal as the horrific scenes which close the play. Blasted‚ the#play which both made her name and brought astonishing condemnation from the press and government‚ remains a distressing and#disturbing work; but again‚ it's rarer to find critical commentary on the revolutionary act of kindness which ends the play. Sarah captured#something deep and true about humanity‚ something cloaked in deep ugliness and terror and violence‚ but at its heart something still very#human and capable of kindness and love in even the most grotesque of situations. and in that she found a unique voice that sees her work#still performed and written about and appreciated as something startling and new and different‚ nearly a quarter century after her death.

2022 was a year of Saturn in 4th house for me and it took me from astrology to psychology to philosophy as I was in some ways pushed to know myself, what drives me, what blocks me deeper cause it seemed like I can’t go on telling anyone anything or do basic functions of life without it. Anger was one of those things that I couldn’t understand about myself and sometimes in others. Its considered the most destructive of the emotions and we Mars dominant people keep explaining that its also what drives us. We try our best to channel it into our passions making it into our source of drive. Every workout song is built around it after all. Yet its exactly what leaves us alone in the fight. It took me down the philosophy rabbit hole and lead me to jewels of Seneca. I needed to know more as we would not only have Jupiter in Aries in 2023, soon we would have North Node in Aries too - it grows the Mars influence and drive / initiative as well as collective anger to get there. Jupiter is not a discretionary planet and at the risk of being stone pelted (oh who am I kidding my Uranus on Ascendent would kill me if I am anything but contrarian) - Jupiter is not “always” Benefic - it grows - more is not always better. Its a neutral planet in my view. Getting back to the point.
Seneca describes anger as the desire to punish another and in some ways our inability to be kind to another and to have mercy on the apparent wrong doer. I don’t think in full consciousness (or may be ego) I can agree to the whole of it but I do see the point of it.
I do believe if we would in some ways see that in the first seed of anger there are some seeds of desire to punish another or ourselves. Or in some ways if we can be more sympathetic to the shared fallibility of human race cause we all have been wrong so many times in our life ourselves - we could slowly train ourself to be lenient with others and ourselves. He says mind needs to be trained so it only feels the heavy blows. Mars retrograde in Gemini is so much about that and we discussed that in the last reading. Am I wasting my energy on the small irritants the small fights - are minor things / irritants taking our major time. I am ending 2022 on the lesson of forgiveness and I know its a cliche but its one cause its main thing that helps free ourselves from us and so far thats what the Mars retrograde journey has brought me apart from the obvious mechanical issues which are mostly the means to this end. As Joyce Meyer said in one of her sermons (I am not Christian so nothing religious about it all) - “They may not deserve forgiveness but you deserve peace”.
Hope you start 2023 in peace.
Happy New Year fam from me and my dear ones ❤️ Our wishes for a peaceful, healthy and prosperous 2023.
Love,
Charu

Hamlet as a Revenge Protagonist
I am a student at the University of Hull blogging as a part of my assessment for the module All The World's A Stage. All the views expressed here are my own and do not represent the university.
I saw Hamlet performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Hull in 2018, starring Paapa Essiedu as Prince Hamlet. The adaptation of Shakespeare’s arguably most famous play by director Simon Godwin decided to take a dramatic departure from what we have already seen on stage before, the play itself cut down from the original but simultaneously enhanced it by streamlining it into a thriller, adding an added bite into the plethora of ways it has already been performed before. Despite being an overall faithful rendition of the play what made it especially distinctive was the underscore of African drum music and a cast of actors who were mainly black. In an interview with Paapa Essiedu he underlined how important it is that ‘theatre reflects the society we live in’, so in terms of representing an ethnic minority on stage, he believes the story being told is most important however through a new lens which as an outcome makes Shakespeare’s plays more accessible to people in a more authentic way.
It isn’t exact to us when Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, however, historians have decided it was around 1599-1602; this was a time in which revenge dramas as a genre had the most marketability despite the fact they were beginning to be considered old-fashioned. It is important to note that Hamlet isn’t an original plot devised by Shakespeare and the story dates back to the 12th century, therefore for most of his contemporary audience this would be a retelling for them. However this was considered trendy at the time, as another example of this is Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, playwriters were adapting their own versions of Seneca. Senecan tragedy refers to a set of ten ancient Roman tragedies, probably eight of which were written by the stoic philosopher and politician Lucius Annaeus Seneca. These plays dramatized themes of murder, betrayal and blood revenge on the villain or villains. Revenge is a major theme in the play, the ghost of Hamlet’s father tells Hamlet it was Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, who killed him. This gives Hamlet a need for vengeance meaning he is the perfect revenge protagonist, however, his characterization is certainly unique through the way he goes about his duties as he manages to kill a lot of innocent people along the way. One of Shakespeare’s contemporaries Francis Bacon wrote an essay ‘On Revenge’ (1625) that mirrors the dramatic ending of Hamlet, seeing revenge as a ‘kind of wild justice, portraying revenge as an uncontrollable consequence responsible to the person taking action. I will be looking at Hamlet more closely as a revenge protagonist through Simon Godwin's direction and Paapa Essiedu’s performance.
Naturally with any of the play's adaptations is a new interpretation of Hamlet, which is any theatre student’s dream role, thick with language to memorize and craft to bring the text to life. What is immediately apparent in Essiedu’s Hamlet is the inner turmoil he fights with to understand maturity in this world, as he practically grows up before the audience’s eyes. In the opening sequence as the play starts, before being fed any of Shakespeare’s language, we see Hamlet graduating as he is called home from university – this handles a ‘coming of age vibe which completely contrasts with the rest of the content of the play. This image of Hamlet’s proud youth is almost completely shattered with the contrast of Act 1, Scene 1’s dialogue and the imagery of pistols as the guards enter and tell Horatio, Hamlet’s friend, about the ghost, introducing the theme of death and murder that becomes Hamlet’s responsibility or obsession for the rest of the play to come. Following into Act 1, Scene 2  we are eventually brought into Hamlet’s first of many soliloquies, Essiedu puts specific emphasis on the lines ‘Married with my uncle, my father’s brother… most incestuous sheets’ and shows the audience a genuine grief, he visibly cries by using facial expressions and gesture, however with the potency on such words, it suggests his Hamlet is much more concerned with the overall betrayal defined by his uncle and mother’s new relationship which is symbolized throughout the whole scene: Hamlet’s mother and uncle are proximately close to each other, they show public displays of affection through gesture and even the stage design of their portrait is on the wall –  everything is tactically staged to show how Hamlet is constantly burdened and taunted by Claudius. Elizabethan and Jacobean plays did not have this same attention to detail involving staging, in fact, the performance area was the majority of the time an empty space, which not only gave the performers an amazing amount of flexibility but it also encouraged the audience to imagine the setting. However going back to Hamlet’s character in this scene; when Horatio, Hamlet’s best friend,  enters the stage we see a complete change in behavior as Hamlet wipes his tears away and proceeds to smile, this subtext says a lot about the characterization of Hamlet within the text as it presents him as being easily able to turn his emotion on and off depending on who is on stage with him, there is a performative, insincere quality about him.
What is most crucial about Hamlet’s characterization as a revenge protagonist is that his act of revenge is inefficacious due to his indecisiveness ‘to be, or not to be, that is the question: whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them’ (3.1.p669) regarded the most famous speech in the text it epitomizes his fluctuation when he decides to put revenge into action at the end which reveals his inability to take action and procrastination this shows his conscience side, he has a hyper self-awareness that becomes his weakness. Hamlet hesitates to kill Claudius several times, for example when he draws his sword: ‘Now I might I do it pat, now is praying, and now I’ll do’t and so goes to heaven, and so am I revenge. That would be scanned…’ (3.2p.675) Hamlet believes if he killed his uncle during prayer he would go to heaven and therefore not face the consequences that Hamlet intends. Hamlet’s decision to kill Claudius is not a power move nor for sheer disposability but he ultimately wants to repeat history so that the scales of justice are balanced.
Interestingly there is another role in the play that fits the archetype of revenge protagonist arguably by critics a lot stronger than Hamlet, mirroring the conventions of Senecan tragedy: Laertes. It is Laertes’ compulsiveness to avenge the death of his father Polonius, which takes the action to its denouement. Laertes comes back to Denmark to take responsibility for the death of his father however he goes about the situation in a completely irresponsible way. Laertes's unable to act in a rational way allows Claudius’ pressuring behavior to convince him into fighting with Hamlet. He, unlike Hamlet, instantly boils over the news of his father’s death and he ‘becomes in an instant everything Hamlet took several acts to become’ (Peter Leinart, The Brightest Heaven of Invention: A Christian Guide to Six Shakespeare Plays). Laertes does not have the emotional maturity of Hamlet and this is his fatal flaw although critics tend to still complain that the play ‘has a ghost who demands revenge for a murder, and a hero who promises to achieve it, pretend to be mad, indulges in philosophic soliloquies, and does not succeed in this purpose till the end of the five acts’ (Bell 31) Hamlet is not written like a typical, conventional Senecan revenge protagonist, his brutality and rashness is removed and replaced with Shakespeare’s contemplation.
Therefore Hamlet’s characterization, the structure of the plot consisting primarily of his failed murder attempts, and finally the subconscious comparison of Laertes and Hamlet shows that Hamlet as a revenge protagonist is unsuccessful and his efforts to fulfill his call for revenge are unobtainable but also the catalyst for disaster.

Pretending to be
What could have been.
It’s just make believe.
But you’re dead inside.
And admiration
Only goes so far.
What’s happened to you?
Nothing’s real anymore.
I write sometimes, my AO3 is here.
Blog contains: KOTLC, random post I find funny, may contain traces of TOH and PJO as well as other minor fandoms
I do have a few OCs, though I never post about them. maybe I should make a post for that. If anyone’s interested in the lore, please send me asks. Honestly the plot is so confusing that the title I use is Is This Just A Wild Goose Chase Or Are We Actually Going Somewhere Here?
But like, there’s this dragon. He’s honestly becoming less and less important. But the main characters are a genderqueer elf who’s killed multiple people and is a little mad with power, aer rival who does not want to kill people as much but is also a little mad for power, the genderfluid monsterslayer that they would and have destroyed the world for, and a few others that I will not elaborate on right now because that’s not the point of this post.
ANYWAY, all my fanfic is on AO3, I do write other(mediocre) stuff that I might post, I feel like this post is incomplete but I can always come back later.
