First of all, we have luminous beings from @daisychainsandbowties!! Star Wars AU. soooo fucked up in the best way. the chapters leave you half in a daze (and I mean this as a good thing) and the way this author weaves in the bits and pieces of the characters' pasts is absolutely incredible.

Next we have and there it is, a mark of the divine by understreetlights. THIS fic is like taking a warm bath at the end of the day. It's like wrapping yourself in a blanket and sitting by the fireplace. It's like the nicest hug you've ever experienced. It's soft and it's incredible and everyone should read it.

Then there's the gods we can touch by @thecousinsdangereux!! Canon Compliant during the Switzerland Months(TM) turned lowkey fix-it. The entire series that this fic is included in is incredible, but I have a soft spot for this one since it was the first I read. Very soft. Very pining. Very phenomenal.

the life left behind by @littledata. exes to awkward friends to real friends to loves. fantastic vibes, some really good communication, and genuinely just a feel-good fic. Very much recommend. I read the whole thing in one night and had no regrets.

i want to meet you in every place i ever loved by phwaa. this is how you lose the time war AU!!!! HELLO???? if you know anything about that book, you know how insane this fic will be. If you don't know that book, first of all you should read it, and also this fic works as a standalone too. Not-really enemies to lovers. Phenomenal.

And of course, last but not at all least, who needs comfortable love by @the-ominous-owl. Sentient Halo AU. Exactly what it sounds like! Starts from the end of s1 and goes from there with a heavy emphasis on the Switzerland Months. The Halo is alive, and it's got a crush on Beatrice. This fic is fantastic, and everyone should read it.

🚀🤖Pacific Rim and Top Gun (AU)🤖🚀

Tom Iceman Kazansky, Commander of the Pacific Fleet, the military branch of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, brings back to the Miramar Shatterdome the former Jaeger pilot Pete Maverick Mitchell to teach the new Rangers how to become better Jaeger pilots as well as to combat the Kaiju.

He’s the last known Jaeger pilot alive to have defeated three kaiju, despite the fact he was piloting his Jaeger alone – his former co-pilot Nick Goose Bradshaw had died during a previous simulation exercise leaving Mav without a compatible match, though it didn’t deter Mav from piloting his Jaeger alone to save another Jaeger team – Ron Slider Kerner & Tom Iceman Kazansky...

However, the successful rescue (followed by Iceman’s declaration of undying love and admiration for him – ‘Shut up, Ron! It’s not true!’ had said an unnaturally flustered Ice after Mav and Ice’s wingmen hug moment) left Maverick with severe neurological injuries including phantom memories from Goose as he died while they were still connected to each other.

It’s like having a piece of someone within your body and soul, only that this person is no longer alive, and it could be quite traumatic for somebody new to attempt a drift connection with one-and-a-half person. (Partly why Maverick was shut out from the Jaeger program, that and his famously known chaotic nature, of course.)

Because to able to pilot a Jaeger, you have to share what is known as a drift compatibility with your co-pilot. Drifting requires the pilots to share their memories, instinct and emotions with each other, and it allows them to act as one consciousness and control the very movement of the Jaeger itself, each pilot controlling one hemisphere. While drifting, pilots need to keep their mind clear of all thoughts [psspss like the ‘no mind’ from The Last Samurai! 👼🏻] to avoid R.A.B.I.T – the following of a memory to the point of losing the focus you need to control the Jaeger. As such, drift compatibility is a potential that exists between two people, that is usually determined through sparring exercises in the Kwoon Combat Room, the point is not to beat your opponent but whether or not you’re able to work in sync with each other. {Source: the Pacific Rim Fandom Page about Drift}

Twelve new Rangers are called back to the Miramar Shatterdome, under the command of Marshal Beau Cyclone Simpson. Most of them are already paired up in a Jaeger.

However, Maverick wants to try some out-of-the-box thinking by changing the designated pair of each Jaeger.  "Because –says Mav reading from a stack of disorganized papers, in front of Cyclone, Warlock, and Iceman– according to research, the Kaiju are sentient beings very much capable of in-depth reasoning, something they weren’t to do before, and, as such, I feel the need, the need to change some shit up to try throwing them off."

Thus begin the tests for new drift-compatible partners…

Rooster, for instance, used to be in a three-neural-handshake, and now must share with only one person, the –absolutely "despicable"– flawless Hangman. And Hangman is a bit frustrated ‘cause he used to be the best with his Coyote bro…and now feels like falling behind because of Rooster. So, he may or may not be overly provocative with his new co-pilot who thinks too much and follows the R.A.B.I.T every time he drifts with Hangman. [Nevertheless, before Rooster spirals out of control, there is a very strong neural handshake, the strongest ever registered. They just need to sort their shit out first.]

Everything in the world of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir is the same, except Nathaniel is 1/64th warlock on his late father, Maison's side

Along with Akumas and Amoks, there are supernatural threats from the magical world plaguing Paris that Nathaniel often takes care of with his magic

When he died, Maison left behind his familiar, a hand-sized goat named Stardust (Bragging rights go to whoever can guess where I got the name)

Like all familiars in the Magic Realm, Stardust is a sentient magical totem that sits atop a witch or warlock's magic staff. They can also switch between a wooden totem and a living form. (... Yeah, that's right. I like Owl House)

Stardust immediately bonded with Nathaniel after Maison's passing and often headbutts his leg when he returns from school

There's also a warlock named Klaus who was cursed by Maison and turned into a rooster for all eternity after he tried to take over the world three times. Aya often threatens to turn him into nuggets when he smartmouths her

His classmates have no idea that Nathaniel's a warlock, but they do notice strange things happening around him

Nathaniel: Later, Kim. *His locker door closes without him touching it, and he leaves*

PAIN Hi!! Nope! Jeb is not alive at all. The only sentient thing about him is the halo. It wants to carry out Jeb's goal of purging the wicked, but after experiencing Nevada the halo decided that everyone is wicked. So it seeks to destroy everything using Jeb as it's vessel :)

Halo Reloaded: Wolf-Team

The same mission that made John the Master Chief, Operation SILENT STORM, was the same mission that took Sam's life; he went down fighting off a small yet formidable horde of Covenant troops (that included the Brutes) in order for John to set up the bomb to blow up the Covenant battle-corvette that they boarded. In John's stead as leader of Blue-Team, Fred is the team's leader in this AU; the fourth member of Blue-Team WAS Sam, but his fate here is about the same as his fate in-canon. Kurt was brought in as the new fourth member in the wake of Sam's passing, though with how close Kelly, Linda and Fred were with Sam, they didn't immediately accept Kurt; it wasn't until Kurt had saved Blue-Team from several well-placed traps and ambushes during Operation TORPEDO (the storming of a large UNSC research-facility that was taken hostage by the Covenant; located in an excavation site on the planet Onyx, a mysterious yet seemingly habitable planet that's loaded with unknown alien resources... there's a reason for that), traps and ambushes that he shouldn't have known were there. After some bonding (that I'm not gonna get into yet), Blue-Team gladly accepted this sentient trap-detector as part of their team, not as Sam's replacement, but rather as his successor.

Silver-Team and Blue-Team (plus Kurt) all know each other really well. Silver likes to joke that they want to be in Fred's group since Fred doesn't jump out of windows and make his team pull off risky plans like John does (much to his annoyance, but John is stoic and mature enough to take it in stride). Kai and Linda... are rivals; they're both the best shots in the UNSC and they think there can only be one. It's basically a shonen-rivalry with BOTH of them as the stock shonen-heroes, but they see each other as the stock shonen-rivals. Up until Sam's heroic death, Vannak took great pride in being the powerhouse for his team much like how Sam was; with Sam gone, Vannak doesn't have anyone to flex with.

John took Sam's death the hardest, and since his death, John made a vow to make DAMN SURE that no one else DIES under his command (since both Blue and Silver were in Operation SILENT STORM together as one unit).

Fr the amount of lore I have stacked up in my brain for this man... all 3 of you who read these posts better be ready to do some scrolling because I am rotted in the cabeza. 

Here’s some feverish rambling about one of my favorite rvb characters (of all time):

- Locus is a changeling, courtesy of my most genius moment in this AU 2 years ago. At the time I was only watching bits and pieces of DS9 whenever my mom had it on, but I got enough to immediately know it was perfect for him. Like Odo, Locus is one of the hundred baby changelings who got sent out into the galaxy with no memories. But I think he probably floated in space for a long time before landing anywhere, so he is decently old physically. 

- As continued, Locus followed a similar path to Odo, but instead of landing on Bajor, he crashed onto Cardassia in the wild lands, where he lay for a very long time. Until one day, he was found by a Cardassian military group - which included Felix and Siris. Since the equivalent of the Halo Great War would be the Dominion War, that’s when this is set. At first, the Cardassians just think this is a mildly interesting slimy sample, but when set near their weapons, they find that it can transform into them. All of a sudden Locus becomes very important to the Cardassians, even more so when they discover he can change from one weapon into another. And that’s what they think he is at this point - some kind of shapeshifting weapon. This is also why they call him Locus - I’m twisting canon a bit, but I’m gonna say that a particular type of phase rifle that they use is a “Locus” model. 

- Eventually, one day as the squad is sitting around talking, they start to prompt Locus to change into one of the soldiers. To all of their utter shock, they discover he can do this, and is in fact a sentient, living creature. But they are in a war after all... and he is still a weapon. (can I get a you are nothing more than a suit of armor and a gun?) Locus becomes an unofficial member of the military squad, who manages to survive in ragged numbers. He’s used both as a soldier and as a physical weapon/armor, which as he’s known nothing else but these Cardassians, he accepts as a fact of life. After the war ends and Cardassia is ravaged, his story would proceed much like it did in canon - he joins up with Felix and Siris, working as a mercenary on distant worlds. I’ll talk more about Siris once I draw him, but at some point Felix and Locus end up working together without him and eventually make their way to Chorus. Which I’ll talk more about when I draw Doyle and Kimball. Goddamn the thoughts in this head.

- Just as Odo has limits to his shapeshifting, I wanted to give some to Locus as well. He does still have to periodically rest in his liquid state, because I think that’s very funny. But his main weakness is that he’s an incredibly good shapeshifter, able to mimic people and things down the smallest detail - he’s just an incredibly terrible actor. He can look like your friend, but if he opens his mouth he cannot convince he’s them. So Locus mostly does spying/background work, which makes Felix desperately he - the “people person” - was the one who could shapeshift instead. 

- Locus’s weird little obsession/mancrush with Wash is one of my favorite little details about him, and when you can literally turn into someone I think that leaves some very fun doors open. Just to explain that ridiculous second extra drawing I made. 

- During the equivalent to seasons 11/early season 12, Locus is fully presenting himself as a normal Cardassian, and he and Felix are riding on basically the same backstories they use in the show - old war buddies turned rivals, etc etc. I think Felix would spin himself as a soldier who was forced to do terrible things during the war, but is trying to redeem himself by helping out the rebels (who are Bajorans in this AU). However Locus, as he is wont to do, just plays himself as an ice cold mercenary who is neutral to either side of this conflict. 

- As time goes on during the late season 12/season 13 equivalent arc, Locus does spy work, frequently disguised as a Bajoran or a Human. He begins to favor these forms (as he grows more and more conflicted about himself), something that Felix absolutely hates. Post-season 13, he would rarely change into a Cardassian again. His scar is something that he keeps, though - originally he gave it to himself because the leader of the original military squad (the suit of armor and a gun guy) had the same scar, and Locus saw him as an authority/father/mentor figure. Post season 13, he keeps it a reminder to himself and to keep him in check. 

- God I can talk about Locus for hours. I’m so fond of changelings. Can I get a hell yeah for any pronouns Locus? Changelings are literally The gender fluid.

The Halo doesn’t like the warehouse.

It’s the first thing Ava notices as she follows Bea inside, still reeling slightly from their moment against the jeep, from the intensity, then sudden lack thereof. Bea still hasn’t looked at her, and her brief, loaded exchange with Michael had ignited an ache in Ava’s chest that Ava doesn’t know how to deal with. She wants, desperately, to catch Bea’s arm, to drag her back outside, to make the kind of dangerous promises Ava has no way to keep, promises like I’ll never leave you or Everything’s going to be okay.

But she can’t, because the Halo doesn’t like the warehouse. It’s buzzing nervously under Ava’s skin to urge her forward, so instead of hooking her arm around Bea’s waist and dragging her away, Ava just follows her inside, adjusting her pace until they’re walking side-by-side and trying to ignore the way the Halo had started shivering against her spine the moment she’d crossed the threshold and hasn’t stopped yet.

Inside, the warehouse is sparse but not empty, and not unoccupied. Stacks of wooden pallets and ancient, rusting shipping containers serve as perches and leaning posts for just under a dozen people, all of whom are masking varying levels of anxiety under a thin veneer of affected insouciance. They perk up when Michael enters, but their enthusiasm visibly dims when they catch sight of Ava and Beatrice behind him, each expression shifting to land somewhere along a spectrum of curiosity and concern.

The one standing in the centre of the space – a woman that Ava vaguely recognises from the bar – shifts to the side as Michael approaches, revealing the man behind her isn’t standing so much as hanging from his bound hands, suspended from a crane hook and looking surprisingly unbothered by it.

your tags about ava and the blood reminded me of this post lmao. also same hat on having a ghost ava + lilith dun fucked up aus 🤝. noticed that lilith’s the only one said to catch glimpses of ava & shannon, is that because the halo’s literally in lilith’s back thus the connection is stronger or something? does the halo and lilith’s relationship improve at any point like after they’re all working together to take down vincent or something? since the halo is lowkey refusing to cooperate with lilith, and since the halo was in shannon and thus knows what shannon experienced when it was in her probably, does that mean the halo knows vincent’s the traitor and it just like flat out refuses to work at all when vincent’s in the room or trying to get lilith to do something for him as the Warrior NunTM? Do ava + shannon have limitations on how far they can travel and/or their powers, and is there a variation depending on like, where they’re at or their ties to something in life? Also what’s the shanmary reunion like? 👀

Yeah, I think the Halo lets Lilith see them a bit because it's reacting to their presence. Maybe it's fully sentient in this au or only a little bit, I haven’t decided yet, but either way it recognizes them and activates briefly when they're nearby. So Lilith gets all these dreams and glimpses and it's driving her nuts. Shannon and Ava are getting frustrated too because every time they try to talk to her, the connection breaks before they can say two words.

Once everyone, including the Halo, gets a better grasp of what's going on, Lilith discovers that she can control it better. She might even discover her own special Halo ability, which I'm picturing as a Klaus-style conjuring trick that lets Shannon and Ava (and maybe other Bearers 👀) become corporeal to fight. Let's see Adriel try to take down a ghost army lmao 👻.

As for Shannon and Ava's powers... I'm not sure. Maybe they can draw some of the Halo's power still, but not to the same extent as Lilith. I'll have to think on it some more.

Shannon is so desperate to get any kind of message through to Mary. Ava is right there to help, of course, and they try for days/weeks to come up with a stable method of communication. When they do, it's Shanmary tears and emotions all around, 24/7. They can't touch, at least not yet, but Mary still reaches for Shannon even as her hands pass right through her. Ava waits quietly in the background to give them privacy, and wonders what it would be like to have someone miss her that much (soon, Ava 👀).

My original plan was to do a whole "Happy AU" Spin-off series (@djarrex, my beta reader, and I named it the REU, which stood for Rose Extended Universe lol) but tbh we ended up making it SUPER depressing and with the way my mental health has been I'm not sure I'll ever get around to really writing it aside from small drabbles here and there.

As for your question about fluffy things Gol'Chek and Ju'Lah did during the bounty hunting years...

Ju'Lah had PLENTY of nightmares, especially there at the beginning, so she slept with Gol'Chek pretty much every night. He would stroke her hair and sing or hum softly to her, usually the Cymruun lullaby he sang to her in WBIT.

If they had extra money (which was rare) they'd go to a cantina or diner for actual food that wasn't rations. Ju'Lah was always excited to try new things, it was one of the few times she seemed like an actual kid. She'd hold the too-big menu in her little hands and ask a bazillion questions and pronounce things wrong, and she'd ask to try whatever Gol'Chek got. He's a good sport, and usually set aside half his food for her, partially because he didn't want her going hungry and partially because he knew she'd want to try some.

He teaches her Mando'a words a lot too. He'd have her practice speaking/writing it, and would sometimes call out words to her while he flew the ship and she'd color a picture to go along with the word. It was like being homeschooled.

Speaking of coloring, Ju'Lah LOVES painting. Gol was always trying to get his hands on sheets of flimsi and paints whenever he could so she could paint or color while on board the Cord. The ceiling of the hull is COVERED in her handprints/finger paintings. She wanted to be able to lay on her bunk and look up at them, to be reminded of the cave drawings back on Gyatta. It made her feel at home.

I know Life Day is technically a post-Empire holiday, but it was FOR SURE around and celebrated pre-Empire too, so hear me out: Ju'Lah's people didn't celebrate the same holidays as most sentients, so she had no idea what Life Day was until Gol'Chek told her about it. She got VERY excited, and worked VERY hard on her present to Gol'Chek (she'd folded several pieces of flimsi into the shape of the Gol'Chek flower from the mountains and presented them to him) and Gol'Chek took her to an actual Diner for Life Day dinner, and when they got back she found a specialized Datapad and stylus on her bunk so she could draw digitally. It had taken Gol'Chek awhile to find a good one, but once he did, he kept it hidden until he could give it to her for Life Day. She still has it.
