Hello. Back in the day, some magazines/newspapers would publish serialized novels that would eventually be published in book format. A classic example being Sherlock Holmes in The Strand in the 1890s/1920s - or Tales of the City in the SF Chronicle in the 1970/1980s. Two questions: Does this still happen at all in this day and age, and if so do you know which publications do this (for adult or kids books or both)? Or is it only Wattpad now? And secondly, how did it work back in the day in terms of rights - did the publishers buy them from the newspaper or author? Was the agreement already in place to publish them in book format some day or was it just once the serialization proved popular? Thank you.

All the publications you mentioned were a BIT before my time, and I'm not a historian or anything, so IDK the ins and the outs of how or when the deals for the books were structured. I *can* tell you that in Charles Dickens and whatnot's time, booksellers were often publishers as well, and magazine/periodicals vs books were not really divided up the same way they are now.

So like, the Sherlock Holmes stories were published by the Strand magazine -- and then the first book of them was put out by the Strand magazine publishing company. For your more recent example, Army Maupin wrote a column in the SF Chronicle called "Tales of the City" -- as far as I am aware, it was not intended to be a book to begin with, but then a collection of the columns was made into a (series of) books. If you look at the copyright page of the first edition, the copyright in the stories is held by the Chronicle, they licensed the stories to a division of Random House to be made into a book. Beyond that info, which I gleaned from a fairly cursory google, I know nothing about it.

As far as I know, there are no current magazines and newspapers running serialized novels. (Maybe some random literary journals do??? But I am not aware of them). There are online companies, like Wattpad, Kindle Vella, and SerialBox/Realm, that do something like that -- but that's out of my purview!

It would be wonderful if Tremontaine was a tv show already, then I could proudly put the Duchess on my list. :) Ironical isn’t it, Serialbox brilliantly succeeds where tv serials fail, appealing to me. While they strive to be like the modern television shows, they emulate them (by far). The few recent television shows I actually liked were Spartacus, where I have no clear favourite character, and Hannibal, where I would obsess about one episode and be deeply bored by the next.

I Love Stella Gibson, but I gave up on the Fall during Season 3. Would it be “cheating” to include her? I am so happy to see Absolutely Fabulous in your lists, I love that show. I can’t pick a favourite character though. :)
