I love the ugliness of love. Removing love from its socially accepted roots. Love as not a mere source of tragedy and sadness, but as an active corruptive power over those it mystifies. Love as the addiction without cure and the wound forever bleeding. I love seeing the beauty of something so coveted spun on its head.

Observation Log Series: Sayaka [II]
Rewatched some Sayaka episodes to see if I forgot any details - interestingly, I managed to observe her room this time. Magical girls and their dwellings seem to infer a lot about them [well, the home of a magical girl is just the shell of their Witch's labyrinth after all]. Unlike Homura who has a lot of frames hung up about Walpurgisnacht, coupled with gears and clockwork to resemble a swinging pendulum [which was, of course, shaped like an axe in foreshadowing of Homulily's 'funeral'] or Madoka's strange house full of chairs in one room, Sayaka's room....has a lot of mirrors.
It's probably picked up by many people prior already, but it's no less interesting as this seems to confirm the analysis on how Sayaka lives in an 'echo chamber' of her own depressive thoughts and is obsessed with herself not in a way that is purely selfish, but rather a desire for others to understand why she's infatuated with her own grief to begin with. Since this sentiment was not received, she spiralled.
In the second picture, you can also see more clearly a crown sitting atop her shelf. It eludes to the crown of Oktavia.
This is more of an observation for myself because I Think It's Cool, but when Sayaka's despair spikes during the scene of the men discussing sigma male shit or whatever, her eyes reflect the magic circles that is often seen bubbling around her to heal wounds. Here, as opposed to 'healing' purposes, it's the activation of her powers for the [possible] use of violence against human beings.
This one's a bit more obvious: the signboard behind both of them are a forecast warning on rainy weather and that individuals should optimally seek shelter as soon as possible < at first I interpreted this as a typhoon season warning, which was the stage set-up for Walpurgisnacht's arrival , but umbrellas aren't the emblems for typhoon storms, they're for rain. The sign is inscribed in the Witch runes we see, not the Japanese language, which wouldn't be far-fetched to say that it's a warning of Oktavia's imminent birth.
That's all for today. This analysis is rushed because I have assignments. but I wanted to just. Put it out there. Even if I am only five hundred years late/slow to the party.

Today I was thinking about why I love the magical girl genre so much.
Some might say it's the recognition of these characters having to grow up too soon, have too much weight on their shoulders at such a young age. This is certainly something a lot of us have experienced and something that is well worth exploring in all it's complexities in fiction.
However, this is something a lot of stories explore, almost every popular story you can think of has a young protagonist having to save the world. Why then is magical girl so special for a lot of people, why does it resonate with us differently, what sets it apart from these other stories?
To me, it's the theme of overcoming loneliness and sadness, not through strength or sheer force of will, but through kindness and love. Often, the magical girl protagonist is lonely, she doesn't have a lot of friends, or if she did her discovered powers and the weight of the task isolates her. This is common in other stories, like shounen, as well, but there is a big difference between how these stories handle it and how magical girl does.
The battle almost never hinges on just one character, there is no super-powered Naruto or Ichigo coming in and acting as a one many army against the forces of evil, there is no Luffy fighting on and winning after all his friends have fallen. The magical girl has a TEAM, she has friends fighting by her side the whole way through, never is she alone any more. The victory is not dependent on some lone wolf figure coming and saving the day, but a group of friends, a family, banding together which mutual love for each other and those who they are protecting. It is only as a team that they will win.
This theme of togetherness, not having to do it alone, is soooo comforting for those who have had to bear things like this in their lives by themselves. It gives us hope that we too do not have to bear our burdens alone, but there are others like us who know what we are going through and will show us kindness. They will pick us up when we fall, as we will gladly do for them, and together we will make it through whatever lies in our way.

not to be dramatic but i am so tired of certain magical girl fans who, in 2024, whine about madoka ruining the genre and how "thanks to madoka there are no lighthearted magical girl shows anymore and everything is all dark and gritty now >>:(" because that's not true at all!! if lighthearted magical girl shows aren't in demand anymore then why is toei still making precure seasons? not only that but there are a bunch of new magical girl shows coming out this year alone. but instead you choose to give attention to madoka wannabe #324 and fetish bait show #582 to whine about how "magical girls are dead now".
you want lighthearted, fluffy, fun magical girl shows? THEN FUCKING SUPPORT THEM!
himitsu no aipri, which is a part of the pretty series, will air on april 7
acro trip will premiere some time this year
magilumiere co ltd will premiere in the fourth quarter of this year
the magical girl and evil lieutenant used to be archenemies will air in july of this year
GO SUPPORT THESE SHOWS INSTEAD OF WHINING ABOUT THE GENRE BEING DEAD, THEN WE CAN TRULY HAVE A MAGICAL GIRL RENAISSANCE.
