if i had a penny for every time jo hansun played a side character who has a fixation on the male lead and constantly has homoerotic tension whenever they meet because he's been thwarted on his path of greed and cruelty , i'd have two .
which , isn't a lot , but it's weird that it happened twice !

Vigilante
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Vigilante (2023, South Korea)
Director: Choi Jeong Yeol
Writer: Lee Min Seob (based on the webtoon by CRG & Kim Kyu Sam)
Mini-review:
I love shows and movies that focus on the moral conflicts of vigilantism. It's always a fascinating topic, and Vigilante delves deep into it. I feel like some people won't be happy with this drama's take, though, cause there are points were it pretty much justifies the main character's actions. However, that's what makes him even more interesting, and Nam Joo Hyuk gives a pretty solid performance in the darkest role of his career (special mention to his speech in episode 6). That being said, the show is so short that it barely has time to develop the characters and their connections. I don't know who decided to make only 8 x 40-45 minute episodes, but it wasn't a good idea. The whole thing feels rather rushed, and it doesn't take the necessary time to properly set all its stakes. It's definitely enjoyable, but it would have been even better as full-length drama.

Pumpkin Time (Movie 2022)
Interesting note, this film adaptation is based on a webcomic that first was made into a 10 episode mini series. I didn't know it had a series before I watched the movie and when I checked both series and the film have the same cast, so I wonder if the movie is just a compilations of the episodes which were less than 30 min. long each one.
In any case, what made this story about first love and friendship thought provoking was the premise. Tae Joo and Hae Won were male best friends when they were little. Both played baseball. Tae Joo moved to the United State after being scouted and returns looking for the best friend he missed through all those years. In the States, he was about to be drifted since in the United States people graduate from high school at the age of 18; but he decided to go back to Korea to what would be his last year of high school in his home country since people graduate in Korea around 19 or 20.
But in the meantime, Hae Won's body when he was a kid changed sex over night. He went from having a male body to that of a female body and since then he has lived as Hae Yoon, a girl. Only Hae Yoon's mother and cousin know the truth about the situation (and the pediatrician). Now that Tae Joo is coming back and coming to her school, she doesn't want to see him because it's difficult explaining what happened, but fate has other plans and they do meet and interact as Tae Joo and Hae Yoon.
Hae Yoon is both Hae Won and Hae Yoon. And when the faerie explains that the transformation was a mistake and that he is willing to change her if she wants, she chooses to stay female. It is Tae Joo who needs to decide if he is okay with having his best friend and the girl he likes to be the same person. This story is an interesting way of exploring the concept of love, because I think that what Tae Joo and Hae Won felt for each other as children was pure friendship but as young adults those feelings had seemed to develop into something deeper. If they had still been the same sex when they reunited, would they had ended up romantically together or would they had stayed platonic friends? I think they would have ended together because as - Tae Joo told Hae Yoon, he liked her as a person, regardless of her sex.
It is a sweet, story about friends becoming lovers.

You Are My Spring. 6-7
Story: 6
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Run On (kdrama) ; When the Camellia Blooms (kdrama)
Oof this was a hard one for me to rate. I love, LOVE romantic comedies, and I love thriller mysteries too. This had both. Unfortunately with this one both didn’t mesh well together and felt disjointed. At least it felt that way for me. It was like I was watching two separate storylines that never came together. The first few episodes were brilliant. Without spoiling anything, the “mystery” sort of unraveled pretty quickly during the first couple episodes which threw everything good away and I think the writing of the show got lost, especially when every so often if something did happened bring back the mystery crime part the characters acted like it’s nothing or it’s normal (especially towards the last half when something is revealed ) Everything felt off. Now when the storyline was completely revealed about the murder mystery I was totally let down. It was really so basic and like “That’s it?” In the heart of it though yes, both main leads do have excellent chemistry together. I just wish the romance bits had less cliches and less inconsistencies, especially during the confusing flashbacks.
