While everyone is out celebrating Valentine’s day, we would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone if an important moment in history. Adnan Saidi (Lieutenant) was an officer in C Company of the Malay Regiment’s 1st Battalion, during the Japanese invasion of Singapore in February 1942. On 14 February 1942, Adnan and his troops made a brave last stand at Opium Hill (Bukit Chandu), during the battle of Pasir Panjang. Towards the end of the battle, Adnan was taken captive and executed by the Japanese. In life, there are endless possibilities and many roads to take, and the choice is always us to make. Yet one thing’s for sure: you cannot choose your parents, like it or just suck thumb lor.

You see, some people take their parents for granted, they had the perfect childhood, born in wholesome families, like the ones you see on the screen. But life can never be perfect, sin creeps in, expectations set. And this was very true for Aden Lim, who had his whole childhood planned out for him, and his mother the conductress who could possibly orchestrated the series of depressing events...

To be fair, they always say mother knows best, and like any other typical asian tiger mum in the pre-millennial decade, children were like trophies to them. Behind a 状元 (zhuang-yuan) lies a 孟母.

zhuangyuan (simplified Chinese: 状元; traditional Chinese: 狀元; pinyin: zhuàngyuan), variously translated into English as principal graduate, primus, or optimus,[1] was the title given to the scholar who achieved the highest score on highest level of the Chinese imperial examinations.[2]

Let’s get back to the story. Anyways, you must know Aden Lim, in comparison to most 90′s SG kids, he probably had so many things to absorb around him, so many ‘opportunities’ paved for him. What a privilege, you must say, with privilege comes sacrifice - cannings, high expectations, supervised tutelage from the matron of the house. His dear sister, Julie Lim, only 20 months younger, probably had it slightly better, at least she did not bear the burden of the matron’s expectations.

Had a great time at the closing event of “Singapore Undercovered” – an initiative by four passionate ladies from #NTUsg: Samantha, Si Hui, Amanda and Sng Ying. Over the last five months, they have taken 85 students from four secondary schools on field visits to home-grown start-ups and organisations like Home-Fix, Splash and Carousell. The journeys of these Singapore enterprises reflect our contemporary culture, and together form the Singapore story which is part of all of us.
