Shadowhunters Family Trees!

(These are subject to change as the new book comes out, but I wanted to share them now)

Full thing is too confusing for even me who drew it, so I chunked it up a little into more readable pieces

The noble and ancient line of Herondale certainly finds itself wide spread across a few family names

The Lightwoods’ have a relatively easy to follow tree. They also have the most reliance on the non-canon found family tree for information. Hopeful the information doesn’t change too significantly.

The Fairchilds have some missing information. (And no appearance from Great Aunt Matilda) Either Charles or Matthew are near certainly the ancestor of Jocelyn and Clary, but which one?

The Carstairs and Ke families. I’m doing some guess work with Cordelia and Alistair’s sibling, but Emma has to come from somewhere. Maybe Alistair will be like a surrogate father to the kid and that’s why the found family tree lists him as Emma’s ancestor?

And Finally… The Blackthorns! It would be interesting to know what the relationship between Annabel and Eva Blackthorn was as they were likely alive at around the same time. It’s also interesting to learn that Kit has some Blackthorn lineage in him too.

esme if i remember correctly was friends w jamie in the shadowhunter academy and she was a mundie who ascended, but she wasnt mentioned since then until chain of thorns ??? like what ??? she wasnt even with the group of girls in chain of gold

plus i remember cassie hinting that it had to do w the silent brothers since thats where the archives are, tf happened to that

it woulda been so dramatic if smth happened and jem changed the records bc of it, but noo. apparently they used a family tree completed by an obviously unreliable girl, and they kept using that for over a century and its still in use ??? surely someone wouldve noticed that alastair didnt have any kids and it was zachary who was continuing the carstairs line

like did no one in 1910 say “wait a second christopher and barbara lightwood both died years ago why does the family tree not say that they are dead”

not saying i coulda done better but i havent written five series w seventeen main books, one more series on the way, and four books left to be written

I'm curious about who these monster Herondales were. We can probably include Stephen in there, but I guess we don't really know much about the Herondale generations in between James and Stephen. There's probably also a lot more Herondales than what the family tree shows us, right?

We as TSC fans are all aware that Emma Carstairs... is not a descendant of Cordelia Katāyoun Carstairs, right? The Cordelia that is Emma Carstair's mother is a Townsend (don't ask why she is then named Cordelia, I don't know the ties there).

Cordelia is Jace's ancestor, his direct ancestor. We can still say Emma and Jace are connected via her through the family tree, because Cordelia's the sister of Zachary, who carries on the Carstairs line, but it feels rather inaccurate to say Emma is descended from Cordelia, if that makes sense. And Cortana easily could have still passed on through the Carstairs if the sword chose one of them over Cordelia's child and grandchildren.

I don't know, just, without Cordelia's descendants, that line of Herondales doesn't exist and I think her tie to them overrides the idea that any Carstairs are descended from her. I'm just voicing this because I've seen a few things that seem to imply Emma is Cordelia Katāyoun Herondale née Carstairs' descendent when I'm not sure it's very accurate. The definition I found of a descendent includes being of blood, and I suppose you could say Emma shares that with Cordelia, but do you see where I'm getting at? Zachary shares Cordelia's blood because they're of the same parents and family, but it's Zachary's line that Emma comes from, not Cordelia's. Emma and Cordelia are family, but not... in the way where she's descended from her. She's like a great great great aunt. Who has her own descendants, especially because she also married into another family.

Then again, I suck at family trees, I probably have this all wrong. Feel free to give your own takes or correct mine, I'm trying to make sense of where we're at with this.

Maybe the only difference is between descendants and direct descendants that I'm getting muddled up and it's not that big of a deal.
