Funguary Feb 18 - Edible Shaggy Ink Cap - Coprinus comatus
The self-aware and self-digesting edible shaggy ink cap can be found only seldomly unlike the mushroom it resembles. It has frequently generated bodhicitta, a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Through acceptance of the nature of cycle and decay, it is has learned to consume and calm the self to attain enlightenment. The opposite of humans, it has attained nirvana first, then transcended birth, old age, disease, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress of mind and weariness.

Fungi February: The shaggy mane must be cooked or frozen quickly lest deliquescence turns its cap into a bitter goop. They grow well on disturbed ground, so they often show up where they're least expected, like the green areas of towns.
Disclaimer: Don’t rely on pictures of cute mushrooms with eyes to accurately identify edible mushrooms. At best the wrong one will taste bad, at worst it’ll be deadly!

The patch of shaggy manes (Coprinus comatus) by the barn decided to get an early start this year; I'm hoping that's a good sign for the fall mushroom season, after last year was so disappointing. These three ended up as a quick saute because I am hustling around trying to get packed to leave for Portland first thing in the morning because I have classes and more classes over the next few days. But it was a really nice treat amid all the busy-ness!

Behold: the ☆Shaggy Mane☆
also called Coprinus Comatus
It's one of my favourite fungus!
It is born tiny, and then it auto-digests itself to give space for the spores to spread so they can reproduce.
The black "ink" they secrete is from their autodigestion, and they can reproduce thanks to that too.
I think it looks so cool, let me know what you think!

FOTD #081 : shaggy ink cap! (coprinus comatus)
the shaggy ink cap (also called lawyer's wig or shaggy mane) is an inkcap fungus in the family agaricaceae. it is famous for its pitch-black spore-filled ink !! it is said to often grow in "unexpected" places, & has been recorded in south africa, europe, north america, aotearoa & australia. it is also carnivorous :-)
(learn about carnivorous fungi or the process of deliquescence)
the big question : can i bite it?? yes !! the mushroom is edible when young / before deliquescence.

c. comatus description :
"the shaggy ink cap is easily recognizable from its almost cylindrical cap which initially covers most of its stem. the cap ranges from 4–8 cm (1+5⁄8–3+1⁄8 in) in width & 6–20 cm (2+3⁄8–7+7⁄8 in) in height. it is mostly white with shaggy scales, which are more pale brown at the apex. the free gills change rapidly from white to pink, then to black. it is deliquescent. the white & fairly thick stipe measures 6–40 cm (2–16 in) high by 1–2.5 cm (1⁄2–1 in) in diameter & has a loose ring near the bottom."

Do you have a favourite mushroom? if so, feel free to tell me about it :)
I had typed up a whole post replying and then closed the app like a dummy and it got vanished forever. So thank you for your patience and for your ask! Here is mushroom 2.0!
I have chosen a top three, because choosing a favorite child is impossible.
My favorite mushroom of all time is Inky Mane aka Shaggy Ink Cap aka Coprinus Comatus. It’s an oozey mushroom! To spread its spores, the cap disintegrates (deliquesces). It’s an edible mushroom, but you have to eat it fast before it melts away! I’ve never eaten one but I would like to. I don’t believe it grows where I live.
It’s just so pretty at all stages of life! So many cool textures and of course, the black gore is very pretty.

Honorable mention mushroom time!
I have been eating so much tamogitake, aka golden oyster mushroom, aka Pleurotus Citrinopileatus. It’s sooooo pretty! Yellow is my favorite color. My favorite shade of yellow is the yellow of this mushroom. It’s a very beautiful mushroom visually, and it’s very very tasty. I included a pic of a stir fry I made with it !

I have to also mention a fungus that is not technically a mushroom but is a FAVE! Bleeding Tooth, aka Devil’s Tooth, aka Hydnellum Peckii is another oozing fungus! I love the colors and textures of this fungus. I have drawn it many times and will definitely draw it again! It oozes spores and has little spines on the underside of its cap, and is overall just very weird and cool. Apparently it won’t hurt you to eat it, but it’s very yucky! Supposedly it grows in my area but I’ve never seen it in real life. I’m including some art I’ve made of this mushroom!
