thinking a lot about the idea that gaster is trying to insert himself into deltarune’s narrative where he didn’t exist before, because it’s literally the polar opposite of what i’ve been thinking and it’s so fascinating. like it’s honestly just as viable a perspective at this point and i think it’s a really good one. our personal sense of probabilities comes down to whether we think he actively intends to be seen, to be present in our understanding of the story, or whether he intends for that presence to be erased or overwritten. maybe he thinks he can find a place in a new story. maybe he thinks there is no place for him, and he should just be discarded. it could just as well be both — maybe he doesn’t know what he truly wants or needs.
either way I Think we still have this possible narrative of a guy struggling to find where he belongs, who presently and historically (from our POV) exists only in the spaces between things, in implication and in metanarrative and in metatext as a theorycrafter’s deus ex mysteryman. a consciousness with vague, shifting boundaries (made literal by disembodiment) who struggles to define his own shape in the first place, to understand his purpose. from the first Fun Event investigation threads through the present, Who He Is still depends largely on our perspective of him and, importantly, what we want him to be — for now, anyway, he can conform to whatever reflection is most useful to us.
who was he "really"? maybe we’ll get an answer, maybe we won’t. maybe it’s as if that "real" him was never there at all.

the beach scene with Jill and Clive made me feel so many emotions because the ship has finally sailed ;v; Can we get something similar with Joshua? When would the first kiss with Joshua be? In what situation would Joshua and Reader confess their love? Aaaaaaaa I need a lot of Joshua fluff and angst QWQ
Hopefully this was sad enough? I need more experience with angst tbh so this was good practice!
It hurt Joshua to push away his loved ones, but it was a sting he was all too familiar with. Clive, Jill, Jote, all friends and family he kept at arms length to protect them, but you were different. You never left.
He tried to send you away as well, but you wouldn’t listen. Persistent, stubborn, you followed him despite the danger you knew you would face. Even if you knew it would get you killed.
In all honesty, it only made him love you even more.
He could feel it, Ultima’s pull. Days were drawing closer and closer to their confrontation, where he would fight to protect this world and all he holds dear. An impending sense of doom, a sinking feeling in his chest every time he looked to the gray skies above. He watched the clouds roll over from his bed in the hideaway, focused on the ominous spire that hovered over the lands of valisthea in some sickening imitation of the Mothercrystal.
By early morning he would journey to that wicked monument, and the fate of the world would be decided.
“Joshua?”
His thoughts are interrupted by the sound of your voice. Concerned, you walk past the entryway to where he sits on his bed.
“Can’t sleep?” You smile, but it doesn’t reach your eyes. He mirrors your own expression, not quite able to muster up a sentence.
The bed flexes with your combined weight, and any other time your company would be welcome, but it only fills him with dread. A reminder of what he stands to lose should he fail in his mission.
Your voice cuts through the silence. “I’m afraid, Joshua.”
He nods in agreement. The air is rife with apprehension, a sudden restlessness settling in his bones. “You have no reason to be. We will defeat Ultima.”
A hand reaches out to trace against his own. Tentatively, your fingers trace against his palm, holding it close as you speak. “I know you will. That’s not why I’m afraid.”
Normally so well spoken, he can’t find it in himself to reply. The fire at Phoenix Gate, the encounter at Oriflamme, and now this. Perhaps it was the curse of the Phoenix to be a martyr, to die for others.
There’s a tremble in your voice, one he wishes he could tame. “I don’t want you to go.”
It’s a naive sentiment. You both know fully well that he must but you say it anyway, desperation dripping in every word.
“I will return. I promise.” He says in mock confidence. And if his voice wavers, if his hands shake in your smaller ones, you don’t mention it.
Your shoulders shake with laughter, but it’s not like the laughter Joshua knows. No, this is forced, clipped, not the melodious sound he has grown to know and love.
You sniffle weakly, eyes glassy as you look at him. “Liar.”
That one word makes his heart shatter. Suddenly the room is all too small, reality setting in as you cry in front of him.
Neither of you can pretend any longer, and so you both fall into each other's embrace, his head pressed as far as it can into your hair. He holds you close, memorizes how you feel against him, your touch, your scent, how tightly your hands wrap around him as if you could somehow force him to stay.
Your tears feel hot against his tunic, your fingers curling into the soft material. “I love you, Joshua.”
It’s said so softly, if the room wasn’t already silent he would have missed it. Many days he imagined those words falling from your lips, imagined how his heart would beat faster and his smile would stretch, but those words fill him with an inescapable fear. They drag him down, black as pitch, leaving him trapped.
He lets out a choked sob into your soft hair. “I love you as well.”
This is not the ending he imagined, but it is the ending he is given.
When he reaches the docks, ready to leave for Ultima’s lair, he sees your face and an ugly thought tugs at his heart: “What would happen if I did stay?”
Surely Clive and Dion could fight Ultima by themselves? Perhaps they didn’t need him, perhaps his presence would be unneeded—
He banished the thought immediately. No, as much as he wants to stay, he would never risk it.
You run forward and hug him, and it’s a surprise to him and all who witness when you timidly kiss him.
Softly, your lips meld against his, a sensation that makes him forget himself. On instinct he pulls you closer, not a thought in his mind except to commit the feeling to memory.
A moment that feels like a lifetime, your lips leave his and he wishes they would return. Your eyes are full of love, and sorrow, a melting pot of emotions that he finds himself lost in.
It almost hurts to let you go, his arms falling to his sides. You seem to have the same problem, seeing as how your hands ball up until your knuckles turn white.
“Be safe.” You whisper, hesitantly leaving his embrace. He nods, giving you a weak smile.
You watch him depart in tears, and you wish upon Metia for his safe travels. He watches your shrinking silhouette until it fades into the horizon, and wishes that you do not cry for him.
As he fights, he thinks of you.
As he succumbs to his injuries, he thinks of you.
As he takes his last breath, he thinks of you.
His last wish for this world is that you do not spend the rest of your days shedding a tear for him.

WELL WHY DIDNT YA SAY SOOOOOOOOOOO
More q!phil WOOOOOO TRUAMA ANYWAY CASSANDRA BY FLORENCE + THE (MOTHERFUCKINGGGGG) MACHINEEEEEEEEEEEEE IS SO HIM RN
quick history- song is utilizing the myth of cassandra, who had been given the gift of prophecy, yet refused it and was cursed to never have her predictions be believed
I'm not in as much of a mood for lyric dissection for this specific song as really its the entirety of it that encompasses the point I wanna make of it fitting to phils character :O other songs have different sections that fit different arcs but this song ? the literal embodiment of his birdhouse arc, more specifically, the clear gaslighting from the federations end and having someone such as phil who is so known for being logical and level headed, be pushed into a path full of questioning his reality and what is and isn't real to him and to others.
the beginning of the song really hammers the point in, the line "I used to see the future and now I see nothing, they cut out my eyes and sent me home packing" is SO SO SO HIM RN. getting the man who has always seen right through every facade displayed in the island. from the federations lies to having ever harmed his kids when the cracks first appeared, to the codes impersonations at the dinner party which he pierced through within seconds of speaking to one. to take that surefire attitude and self awareness he owns and destroy it to its very core with the weeks time he's spent in that damn birdhouse is something so painful and this song reflects that.
the second verse remind me much more of his isolationist ideology being further enhanced with the disappearance of his kids. to him having the world in his bunker with chayanne and tallulah asleep, to the next week having them be gone without a trace, and leaving him lost, needing to create a new purpose and routine to continue on the island just hurts so verymuch haha.
the chorus is the hammer to the nail when relating it to the birdhouse arc as of right now. it almost feels as if he's calling out to the federation for an answer to everything he's been experiencing due to their intervention in his mind, leaving it shattered and in fragments and full of doubt towards his own memories. "every song I thought I knew, I've been deafened to, and there's no one left to sing to" is the real star here when it comes to them taking away his children and leaving him with nothing left to turn to in order to ground himself. anytime he went through something harsh, his children were right there to help- but now he has nothing. isolating himself from the rest of the island has come back to bite in the ass when it leaves him with little heart to heart connections he can turn to for emotional support ;-;
the next verse is a bit less connected, but the part about complaints being taken to the lord while trying to look with a wonder to the world with roses in bloom and riot vans in view? very much attaching this to people within the island (ofc mainly phil) taking their complaints to the 'lord' with the lord here being cucurucho. knowing that any cries they have will be left not only unheard, but ignored as the feds are the one causing all this pain to happen. can't connect it as well now but the other lyrics r so him and tallulah trust trust I'm running out of time to write LMFAOOOOOO
ANYWAY AAAAAAAA JUST GONNA SHOVE THE SONG OUTRO HERE BUT
Take me back
Oh, drunken gods of slaughter
You know I've always been your
Favorite daughter
Well, can you see me? I cannot see you
Everything I thought I knew is falling out of view
And if I run fast enough, could I break apart
As empires crumble and cathedrals flatten in my heart?
not even gonna lie, it's clear to me how this fits his arc rn, but I wanna go a step further and say how while listening to the song, I realized that this part fits all the avians of the island. quackity, baghera, jaiden, and phil all being targets of the federation and being fucked with to another degree is so perfectly encapsulated in this outro to a way in which I cannot describe and that's not just bc I'm busy 💀💀💀💀💀💀 whatever u get the point anyway WOOOOOO BRAINROT I LOVE THIS FUCKING BIRD - 💿
I am finally listening to this and HELLO??? ANON??????
THIS MAN!! THIS FUCKING BIRD MAN AND HIS LORE RAAAAH
You are so right in how well this song fits Phil especially in the Birdhouse arc and I‘m so RAAAH RATTLING YOU AND THE SONG
There‘s so many parts where I‘m just, so normal about hearing and my favorite part of this is definitely the
"In this blindness I‘m condemned to
Well, can you hear me? I cannot hear you
Every song I thought I knew, I‘ve been deafened to
And there‘s no one left to sing to"
THAT PART IS SO GOOD RAAAH
ALSO ANON YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC IS >>>>>
This song is so good and so so painful when connecting it to qPhilza AJAJAJ
