HoO is so funny to me when you actually think about the ages of all the characters. Octavian is 18. Percy and Annabeth are 16, almost 17. Reyna is presumably 16. Frank just turned 16, Jason’s about to turn 16. Leo and Piper are like 15. Hazel’s like 14 and a half, and Nico is 13.
The Death Sibs are both the youngest and oldest on the Argo II. Octavian is a college freshman getting into petty drama with a bunch of high schoolers. He gets told to shut up at one point by a random 8th grader. Everyone is scared of the 8th grader. We Sent A 13 Year Old To Superhell and he came back weirder, Just Like Middle School. TLH was just three high school sophomores being sent to do a task and it going Exactly Like You’d Expect. SPENCER HAD WITNESSED MANY THINGS THAT LEFT HIM IN A STATE OF WONDER. Certain books or poetry. Certain buildings, art, or places. Specific moments that left him in an overwhelming sense of awe. An unsettling feeling suddenly weighed in her gut as she studied his face, pushing and pulling her consciousness as if she was stepping into a pit of regret… into something that was unforeseeable—into something that wasn't going to end well.

So, this has popped up in my feed several times within the last few days, so I thought, why not give it a go and expose my fic writing persona. So....
1. How many works do you have on AO3?

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
103.282, which I know for some writers is like one story, but for me is quite a lot.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently only Bridgerton. I used to write for other fandoms waaaaay back in the day, specifically Buffy and Harry Potter. But looking at when the former wrapped up, you can see that I do mean way back when I say way back.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I usually do not, because I feel extremely embarrassed about what to say without sounding stupid and not being able to show my appreciation properly. Which I know is doing exactly the opposite, and I really, really want to change that, but unfortunately old habits die hard.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
All of my fics have a HEA, but I think the angstiest thing I have written so far is “Year of Hell” since the angst goes all the way until the last few paragraphs.

8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully no. There were some weird comments that did not make much sense in the context of what I have written, but no hate.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Ehm... I try? I still feel quite embarrassed writing smut, but I am doing my best to push myself to get out of my comfort zone and include more M or E rated content in the future. I'm a very vanilla kind of girl though, so don't expect anything other than that.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not anymore, but the very first fic I have ever written was a Harry Potter/Discworld crossover (which was pure comedy) and there is an abandoned Harry Potter/Buffy story probably still buried somewhere on fanfiction.net that I never finished. You get the picture. .
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I’m aware of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but I did write a few fics in German. Needles to say, all have been abandoned.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope.
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I have to say Bridgeton’s Kathony (Kanthony?), but there was a time when my heart belonged to How I met your Mother’s Barney and Robin. I shipped these two even before they became canon and still remember the discussion if they should be called Robarn or BRo (It's BRo btw. Robarn just sounds so wrong).
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I really would like to finish that Buffy/HP crossover, but a) I am so way out of these fandoms by now that don’t think I could come up with a proper plot (and I forgot most of my initial outline) and b) I  have lost my password to all of my old fanfiction accounts as well as access to any email addresses that I used for them.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I can write an entire story without any dialogue. Does that count?
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Finding the right words after dialogue in order to not repeatedly write he said/she said or a variation thereof. Not repeating myself, including not using the same words multiple times in a sentence or paragraph, is in general something I struggle with.
Courtesy of my lawyer brain, I also get stuck on details a lot and over think things far too much. It’s hard for me to sometimes just say “screw it” and not go down the rabbit hole of research because I want to get each and every fact right.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Only if it serves a purpose, and at least in my stories it never would. I exclude terms of endearment from that though. In my opinion these do not count as full dialogue.   
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter (and Discworld, since my very first fic was a crossover).
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Surprisingly Year of Hell. Which has a very similar structure to another one shot I am very proud of that I wrote for HIMYM like 15 years ago and found earlier this year on one of my old hard drives. I think it is still somewhere on fanfiction.net, but I really don’t remember under which nick I posted it, especially since I don’t even remember what nicks I used to go by back then to be honest

OKAY, I WILL DO MY BEST HERE, but it’s one of those cases where there’s A LOT of information and NOT A LOT of information at the same time!  We have a bunch of details and some good general ideas, but it’s not like it was a set-in-stone process, so there’s plenty of wiggle room if you want it. The Inquisitorius was started in 19 BBY, the same year as the fall of the Republic and the genocide of the Jedi, but seems to have been officially started after the Purge happened.  Sidious had been planning something like the  Inquisitorius for a long time, but this specific version of them wasn’t necessarily always the only version in development. The Inquisitors are all fallen Jedi, presumably ones that were captured by the Empire and tortured into becoming dark siders.  Several of them have mentioned that they were former Jedi, but the only one we’ve seen the process of is Trilla Suduri, who we saw being tortured for a very long time in Jedi: Fallen Order.  (Link of the relevant scenes here.  Warning:  It can be a bit of a tough watch, Trilla is physically tortured and some of it you see from her perspective, as the electricity is jolted into her body, which can be kinda disturbing.)  So, in theory, it’s possible that some of them fell on their own and agreed to join, but the one explicit example we have is where she was tortured into it and, while Cal is walking around their fortress, he talks about how multiple Jedi were broken there. (For another example, Prosset Dibs is a Jedi we saw falling to the dark in the Mace Windu: Jedi of the Republic comic, so he may have willingly joined or he may have healed while he was working in the Jedi Archives but not all the way and still had to be tortured into joining.) The Inquisitors are under the direct supervision of Darth Vader (after he’d discovered the program, he was put in charge of it), who trains them incredibly harshly--in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, he’s shown cutting an arm off one of them and basically telling them to suck it up and keep fighting, to remember what loss feels like.

Sometimes they’d work with Darth Vader (the Grand Inquisitor went to the Jedi Temple in 19 BBY with Vader, where they confronted Jocasta Nu, the Ninth Sister went with Vader on a mission to investigate a possible Jedi sighting on Cabarria, Vader took them with when he went to kill Eeth Koth and kidnap his baby daughter, Vader had them with when he went to Mon Cala to confront Lee-Char, etc.), sometimes they operated separately from each other (all the times in Rebels or Jedi: Fallen Order that Kanan, Ezra, or Cal faced them when Vader wasn’t around, etc.), probably based on whatever Vader felt like or whatever Sidious felt like on a given day. The Inquisitorius as a group seem to have some degree of command over Purge Troopers, as they would often be seen leading a group of them (this happened often in Jedi: Fallen Order especially) and they could commandeer military assets (or probably civilian assets as well) if they needed to, so they had a certain amount of leeway when it came to their missions--so long as they didn’t piss off Vader or Sidious. Their main goals were to hunt down any Force-sensitives in the galaxy, whether newly discovered Force-sensitive children, former Jedi (whether they had left the Jedi Order or were Jedi in hiding, it didn’t matter), or even Force-sensitive adults who had never been trained by the Jedi.  They would turn them if they could, but otherwise it was to kill anyone who might possibly be a Force-related threat of any kind.  (What this means for planets like the Bardottens, they’ve never said.) They were greatly successful at their missions, so they wound up killing a great number of Jedi who had made it into hiding, along with Darth Vader being one of the biggest reasons the Jedi were mostly entirely gone by the time of the OT, which was helped along by Vader training the Jedi style out of them.  Part of why he was so harsh to them (including cutting off limbs, etc.) was to force them to be more aggressive and less defensive, to be sharp and quick and fast to overpower Jedi, who were used to a different type of fight. They still had unique talents (as all Force-sensitives are not the same), like Ninth Sister had a great talent for reading emotions (including Vader’s, where she could sense how much he wanted to die),

As well as they weren’t actually Sith.  Only Sidious, Vader, and Maul were Sith, the Inquisitors were dark siders or fallen Jedi or possibly a category unto themselves. They have some sort of headquarters, as seen in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, where Vader is seen training them in issue #6 (same scene as above where he cuts off their hands or lightsabers their eye out), which is labelled as being on Coruscant, somewhere in The Works in the Industrial District:

There’s a training arena we see there and at least some sort of communication/strategy rooms that Vader and the Grand Inquisitor walk off into, while they discuss the other Inquisitors. Which means it’s a pretty big complex/building, but (according to Wookieepedia and I’ll trust them on this, instead of digging out my copies of the Complete Vehicles and Complete Locations book), it was a building of Sidious’ that he used as a hideout during the Clone Wars. To what extent Vader and the Inquisitorius took it over (whether they just had a few rooms or the entire skyscraper), I don’t think we know?

Later, in issue #20, we see there’s some sort of break room that Vader storms in on, when he returns to Coruscant, that the Inquisitors were sitting around and hanging out in:

From there, it would be reasonable to extrapolate that this was a base for their operations, the place they returned to after they came back from wherever they’d been sent, possibly even this is where they slept and ate and were sheltered in between missions.  But that’s just reasonable conjecture, not hard canon! There is also Fortress Inquisitorius from Jedi: Fallen Order and it’s primary use was that it was where they took the Jedi they were torturing into becoming Inquisitors.  I wouldn’t say it’s an academy, per se, but it was a place that they likely used as a headquarters. In issue #20 of Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, two of the Inquisitors rebel against Vader and he winds up chasing them down and cutting a huge swath of destruction in his path (LOL @ ANAKIN), which Sidious is not exactly pleased about.  He says that he’s going to move the Inquisitorious off Coruscant to another world so this won’t happen again:

The comic was written in 2018 and Jedi: Fallen Order came out about 11 months later in 2019, so the above isn’t necessarily directly referring to that the Inquisitorious were moved to Fortress Inquisitorious on the moon Nur, but it’s also a very reasonable (and probably likely) assumption. We don’t have an exact timeline for when this issue takes place, but it’s minimum three years after Revenge of the Sith (the Mon Cala arc earlier in the comic is set three years post-ROTS), so probably around 15 or 14 BBY.   However, Trilla seems to have been kidnapped much closer to Order 66, so it’s likely that Fortress Inquisitorius existed long before Order 66 happened, it was used to torture Jedi once their genocide happened, but it wasn’t the Inquisitor’s HQ until several years later. We don’t see a lot of Fortress Inquisitorious, the limited amount of areas you can play through it in Jedi: Fallen Order don’t tell you a ton about what goes on there, but it’s a pretty huge underwater skyscraper sized building and you do see several prison cells and at least one training dojo.

The galaxy at large didn’t know about Fortress Inquisitorious on the water moon of Nur or even the majority of the Empire itself didn’t know about it, it was a heavily kept secret. This is where Trilla and the other Jedi were taken, tortured, and forced into becoming Inquisitors and it’s likely that’s where the Inquisitors were based after the shitshow on Coruscant.  It’s a big enough building that it’s likely to have pretty much whatever kind of stuff your clubhouse needs for the Inquisitors!  But we don’t have much hard canon about it, no. As for the Inquisitors themselves, they’re complicated--some of them seemed almost loyal to each other, they would work together at times or even seem to avenge each other, but other times they would sneer at each other or mock each other, it seemed like they had a lot of shifting dynamics and probably a lot of it was fear at trying to survive being around Darth Vader. We don’t know for sure how many there specifically are or if, when one of them dies, they’re replaced by another, but it seems like there were at least twelve Inquisitors and we’ve never seen them be replaced, which I think implies that they were only ever meant to be a temporary measure and would be disposed of, as soon as Sidious knew all the Jedi were dead for sure/he could raise a new group of Force-sensitive children from birth. ANYWAY YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN:  LOTS OF INFO BUT NOT A LOT OF INFO.  😂

how old is ash on yours au’s?
It really really depends and I’m finding out that I’m absolutely horrible at actually giving out somewhat concrete ages, barring a few Au’s.
Unspokenly Ash is usually around late 20 to very early 22, unless I did write down and post an age for him in what ever Au has it, but thats also more drabble and fillet based. That is… basically my standard and I really need to vocalize that more from the content that I do write him as younger.
Basically how it goes is that with each region he ages up a year. Spending his birthday at home with his mom and the Oak’s that are present at the time before going off on another adventure. This gets kind of tricky around Sinnoh because Ash stay’s there to take on The Brain. I have that written down that it takes 3 month’s to even half a year. Which then put’s off the ‘sharing the birthday with mom and oak’ thing. This lands his birthday in the middle of his current journey at the time or a bit later like right before the league or a month before, if that makes sense. So in the end he comes home obviously older. Though I have been messing around and making the time in Orange Isles shorter to around 9 months instead of a full year.
Like here’s a time table and I’ll keep both set’s of ages if I do mess around with Orange Isles time line and add it as concrete. It gets really complicated so if you want a little more explanation please don’t be afraid to ask. I am also keeping the Brain Arc to half a year.
Starting age to finishing age *0/12 means how many months he is instead of a full year.
Kanto: 10 to 11
Orange Isles: 11 to 12 or 11 to 11 + 9/12
Johto: 12 to 13 or 11 + 9/12 to 12 + 9/12
Hoenn: 13 to 14 or 12 + 9/12 to 13 + 9/12
Sinnoh: 14 to 15 or 13 + 9/12 to 14 + 9/12
+ battling the Brain: 15 to 15 + 6/12 or 14 + 9/12 to 15 + 3/12
Unova: 15 + 6/12 to 16 + 6/12 or 15 + 3/12 to 16 + 3/12
Kalos: 16 + 6/12 to 17 + 6/12 or 16 + 3/12 to 17 + 3/12
Alola: 17 + 6/12 to 18 + 6/12 or 17 + 3/12 to 18 + 3/12

I just want to say that typing all this out looks like one hell of a long ass math equation, kinda hate it and might change it later. But this is my completely basic format of what I use. Of course there’s a lot of wiggle room as I write Ash starting around 20 to 21 in Alola and Galar. He’s obviously going to probably spend more the one complete year in a region and less then another. The end of the league doesn’t dictate when he stays and leaves. Theres also the months that build up between each “arc”, another word I use to refer to his journeys, and to account the HC that some leagues start off at wildly different times then others.
It’s literally just a pick-and-pull basket and just a large general target where Ash would be ages wise. As you see in the end the two different age lists end up being only 3 months part from each other. It really doesn’t matter and I’m mostly just playing around with it. Another note thats… vital isn’t the correct word but I’m use it is that I don’t take Cerise Laboratory and the research assistant job into account. This is based off if Ash travels Galar to his normal standard with every other arc but Alola but I did keep the characters.
You didn’t ask for this but I want to add in other traveling buddies and side rivals ages and how they are compared to Ash as well. Usually Ash is the youngest if not one of them up until Hoenn. With the exception of being exactly 24 hours older then Ritchie. And all of this have way to much detail but its making my ADHD brain go brrrr happily.
He’s older than May, surprisingly, by like a month and a half but he doesn’t realize that and mentally clocks that he’s younger than her because of how responsible and adult like she acts a good chunk of the time. Max is obviously the youngest while Brock is the oldest. The same thing kinda happens in Sinnoh. He’s older then Dawn by a good year and a half to maybe even two years. Though Ash is younger then Paul and Barry by a varying few months between each boy.
Unova is where it changes a lot. Going from one of the youngest to one of the oldest out of his group of friends. Iris is drastically 3 years younger then Ash, making her around 12 at the start of the arc and somewhere around 13 at the end, and around 3 and a half with Cilan. This causes her to constantly pick against Ash because to her he’s older. Ash should be acting more like a seasonal trainer with known responsibilities and shouldn’t be so excited about everything. That’s also an expectation that was subconsciously taught to her by Drayden when she was still in School in the Dragon Village. Virgil is actually the oldest being freshly turned 18 years old while Cameron is the youngest at 11 and 5 months. Stephan is like the closest to Ash’s actually age but also acts a lot more older and more adult like then he really is just by his laid back attitude. Bianca actually just turned 18 before starting her journey.
Age Note: the reason why Cilan is weird and awkward around Burgundy is not because of her short temper and brash attitude but because Burgundy just turned 13 years old. She is a legitimate child just like Iris, compared to Cilan’s 16 years and 6 months when the meet on the road for the first time and not at a connoisseur event. Her deep infatuation and how young she is really puts Cilan in a active land mine field. Unlike Iris who listens to him and actually talks, he has no clue how to interact with her. Burgundy isn’t a normal gym challenger coming to his and his brother gym for a badge or even a normal crazed simple fan. As a gentleman at heart as well he raised to talk between certain age limits close to his own and this ends up making Cilan see Burgundy actually younger then she really is. Kind of like how Iris clocked Ash as a ‘kid’ when he’s obviously older then her and more experienced.
Kalos then thrusts Ash or being the oldest out of the main group but not as a whole. Bonnies around 8 while Clemont is 2 months and a half younger then Ash. This is where I struggle a lot in placing peoples based age in Kalos is actually because of Serena. I don’t want to make her too young to which the point it’s weird and also I based the other contest girls age’s around hers. But I also don’t want to make her too old to the point that Miette, the oldest out of the contest girls no matter what, is older then Ash. The general consensus is that Miette is right in with Clemont and Ash age wise while Nini is the youngest out of the trio. So that places Serena around 13 to 14 while Nini is like 12 and 7 months. Sawyer is obviously just turned 10 while Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna are between 12 and a half to 13 and a half years old. Giving that easy bonding connection with Serena and Shauna while giving Miette a older more experienced vibe and the childlike wonder to Nini. You’d think with Alain and all Ash would be the second oldest but your wrong. Ash is exactly 1 whole week older then Alain but, much like May, he doesn’t know that and mentally clocks Alain older then he really is.
In comes Alola and this is again where I usually bump Ash up to 20 to 21 but for the sake of everything I’m going off the basic target. Ash is obviously the oldest of the class by a good year on them alone though the classes collective smarts pushed them up different grades in school so thats how their together. Kiawe was the oldest at 16 and 9 months while Sophocles is still the youngest at 12 and 3 months, again bringing in the fact that the class is super smart and its based off intelligence instead of age like with every other class. Mallow is the third oldest at 16 and 2 months with Lana following on by at 16 and 1 month. Lillie is specifically around 15 years to 13 years and 4 months based off if I want her to suffer more as a older teen or as a child, literally her age is based off if I want to traumatize her more or not. Hapu is around 12 to 13 years old despite her obvious size and squeaky-ish voice. Acerola despite being very very mature for her age is only 17 years and 4 months old. Horacio is about Ash’s age at an even 17 years old when he and his lackies first meet Ash, Sophocles, and Kiawe.
Age Note: Horacio absolutely used his age as a card against Sophocles as many times as he could to the point it was so overused. This made Ash especially angry because he hated it when people used their age against much younger kids. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re right.
Then we reach Galar as our final stop. Ash is once more the oldest out of him, Chloe, and Goh but not everyone else. That would be Hodge at a straight 19 years old when he first meets Ash and Goh at the Battle Frontier Flute Cup. Chloe comes at 14 and a half years old with Goh just freshly turning 14. This makes Ash’s relationship more of a mentor type distant older brother thing. Those two actually don’t find out about Ash’s age up until he and Goh get their letter so of recommendation and have to fill out the normal personal stuff. If you think Hop is close by in age with Ash then you’re wrong again. He’s actually two days younger then Chloe making Hop around 14 and a half years old as well. Marine is 13 years and 9 months old. Bede is much more closer to Ash then the others at 16 years 8 months. For Leon, Raihan, and Sonia their still very much the same in a way. Leon is still the youngest at 20 years while Raihan is the oldest at 23, leaving Sonia in the middle at 21 and a half years old.
Age note… once more: this fits perfectly for the Kanto and Galar Trios as they basically get opposite of themselves in a way. Goh who’s very oriented, loud, and on the go gets paired with marine who’s very quite and shy for the most part and their going to subconsciously teach each other that its okay to come out of your shell or its okay to take a moment and relax. Hop is very much like Ash and Goh combined with the strategies and the none stop puppy own straight crack like energy and he declares himself as Chloe’s, who’s silent and very critical and almost broody like it’s not quite there but it’s close enough, rival and is trying to teach her that battling is fun and okay and a lot of Pokemon like battling for those reason. Ash and Bede are the obvious choice for each other because once again Ash is very bright, happy-go-lucky, just sweet in general to everyone while Bede is completely broody, extremely sour, and just utterly rolling in his own image and being way to cocky.

Appmon and the question of conscious intelligence

In a bit of a follow-up to my post about this question in light of 02, Appmon also has its own more sci-fi oriented take on “what constitutes an individual living being”! Being more of a “hard sci-fi” story than Adventure/02, Appmon’s take is significantly less philosophical, but ties more into the original artificial intelligence-based roots of the original question, and how it might apply to the real world’s immediate future.
(Note that the rest of this post heavily spoils the finale of the series.)

Well, this post is about Yuujin, of course. (Mostly, anyway.)
I brought up earlier in the relevant 02 meta that the question brought up was a variant (intentional or otherwise) of the “Chinese room” problem, and for those of you who haven’t read that meta, I’ll copy and paste the details here:
The Chinese room problem goes like this: let’s say you’re a person who has never learned, studied, or grown up with the Chinese language (or, really, any language you can’t understand or read; Chinese was only used as an example because the person explaining the thought experiment was using himself as an example and couldn’t read or understand it). You’re locked in a room that has a bunch of Chinese phrasebooks that give you instructions – basically, they indicate common Chinese phrases, and sensible responses you can give to them (without actually translating it to a language you know). Someone slips you a piece of paper under the door with some Chinese phrases on them. You use the phrasebooks to write appropriate responses, and slip the paper back. The person outside the door reads the paper, sees what they gave you, and sees the response you gave them. It makes sense, of course, because the phrasebook told you to write an answer that made sense. But can you be said to actually understand Chinese? No, because you were just following instructions without actually understanding what they meant.
So let’s expand this to make it a bit more complicated: say you have an AI or a robot or something of the sort that accepts “input” – people saying things to it, or showing it things – and gives expected “responses” that seem sensible, through a bunch of complicated programs and processes in its programming. Can you say this robot is “alive”? One might say “no”, because, no matter how complicated and intricate it is, all of it is technically following a set of routine commands telling it to do certain things in response…or so you might say, but couldn’t you say the same thing about a human brain, which also takes input, processes it according to its own instructions (just caused by chemical processes instead of bytes and code), and creates output? After a certain point, this question is going to become far more of a philosophical, spiritual, and potentially even religious question than anything.
02′s take on it deals more with the philosophical question posed by the issue, but, indeed, the problem’s original context was specifically to do with artificial intelligence. Namely, Searle was arguing against a concept known as "strong AI" -- his stance was that, no matter how intelligently a computer may seem to behave, you can't say it has a "mind" in the same way a human has a mind. There have been many arguments back and forth about this that still lie within the AI context, and Appmon itself, being very immersed in this topic, real thought experiments and concepts in AI research, and altogether concerned with the concept of “singularity” (the point in which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence), is very likely to have had this concept in mind even if it didn’t drop it by name in the series.

So episode 48 comes around, and Haru basically has to confront feeling a little (a little?) gaslighted. The part that really becomes the kicker for him is when YJ-14 tells him the sheer depth of how much of their interactions might have been deliberately engineered to "pander” to him the entire time, down to emotional reactions like crying, and all of the encouragement Yuujin had given him in their childhood and at the beginning of the series, had all been fake sentiments to soften him up and play into Leviathan’s hands. This also ties into Leviathan’s full modus operandi and philosophy: its stance is that “it knows better,” being able to calculate and predict everything, and therefore knows the best outcome for humanity -- hence why it has the stance that “people’s feelings don’t matter,” because it can manipulate those feelings at the drop of a hat in the venture to make its perfect world.

Therefore, the stance YJ-14 and Leviathan would like Haru to believe is effectively an extreme version of Searle’s stance -- that no matter how much Yuujin might have seemed to have been a friend to Haru, all of it was nothing but a simulation of behavior that doesn’t mean anything in the end, and all of Haru’s emotions were basically a pawn to it. And ostensibly fueling all of this is the fact YJ-14 seems to be able to take Yuujin’s “personality” on and off like a mask, adding further fuel to the apparent facade that “everything was planned from the very beginning.” Hence, why Haru takes this all to mean “I have nothing” -- if everything had been planned from the start and he were only a pawn in it, he’d never accomplished anything for real on his own merits and everything dear to him had been a facade. One could even say it’s flipping the Chinese room problem to extend to everything -- if everything around you is carefully constructed to seem real, but is actually part of a routine program, can you really say that’s what “really” happened?

Observe the sequence of events that causes the turnaround with everything regarding Haru:
Gatchmon presses Haru to answer the question of “what it is that he wants” (to know whether all of this was a lie or not).
Minerva, presumably witnessing this, deliberately provokes Yuujin with the question she had originally given him upon selecting him as a Driver.
This indeed provokes a reaction within Yuujin, which Haru witnesses, and also witnesses acting in direct conflict with YJ-14.
Haru takes this to mean that “it did exist.”
In other words, Leviathan’s plan wasn’t as airtight as it had thought, and, more importantly, whether it was intentionally or not, something in Yuujin existed as a separate entity from YJ-14, one that had its own feelings of “caring” for and loving Haru, and that’s enough for him.
In fact, Appmon’s take on the Chinese room problem is not that different from 02′s in the end -- namely, it does not actually matter what a sufficiently advanced AI is made up of, or whether it originally came from a routine of “pleasing Haru” or not, because what it is now is practically observable as something making its own independent choices and having its own independent will, and therefore it’s its own entity and “friend” all the same -- after all, you could say the same for the Appmon themselves as well.

A large theme in Appmon is "choices" -- the ability to understand what's going on, and make choices out of free will rather than necessity or formula, and so, identifying Yuujin as an independent entity who can act on his own and therefore make his own "choices" thus identifies him as someone who deserves to be acknowledged as a friend who loves and is loved. After all, we saw him capable of having his own "worries" in the flashbacks in episodes 18 and 32; understanding that such moments like these of “insecurity” were ones developed by an independent personality validates his feelings and self-consciousness as something that was real, and therefore that his and Haru’s friendship was formed on something genuine and not just Yuujin constantly manipulating Haru. Really, the question isn’t exactly about whether Yuujin is working off a software routine or not, as much as something that you could easily frame in more human terms: the difference between a friendship that was formed on real sentiments vs. one that was formed by an abusive, toxic person who was just saying nice things to get on your good side. Yuujin’s the former and acts like the former, so therefore he’s a friend, no questions asked.

Hence, how Haru is able to apply that realization to everything else around him; Leviathan is wrong, it hasn’t been able to predict everything perfectly to plan, and Haru and his friends still are the ones making their own choices going forward. Which means that Haru still has full control over his life and what he wants to do, like how he worried about what he wanted to do with his future back in episode 47; those “choices” are still his and his alone, and, retroactively, everything he’s done so far is still something attributable to himself and not the supposedly engineered system around him.

The entire final confrontation in episode 52 happens the way it does because Haru and his friends managed to skew Leviathan by a slight bit. Up until that final battle, everything Leviathan had done had been part of its carefully engineered plan, up to and including allowing the kids’ Buddy Appmon to reach God Grade so Deusmon could eat them, and then at the last minute Leviathan had to suffer a slight unexpected inconvenience. Only a slight one, because it still managed to maintain its so-called ideal world over humanity in the end. And yet that slight inconvenience still wasn’t to plan, and because of that, it creates a dent in its argument and its genuine belief that it knows better for everyone, and should manage everyone and their choices. We even learn that Leviathan has its own fear of death from that battle -- it really, truly, genuinely believes that it’s doing humanity a favor by sparing everyone from it.

When Leviathan presents Haru with the final choice at the end, it’s made clear that it intends to fully honor whichever Haru chooses. In Leviathan’s mind, the “yes” outcome shouldn’t even be possible; if its calculations are correct, Haru has too much of a stake in Yuujin according to his own “feelings” and should concede. But if Haru does choose “yes”, that means that, in the end, it is wrong, it doesn’t know everything, perhaps there is an “unknown” world out there that can be formed by understanding the human heart and making choices out of kindness, its answer to restraining humanity may not be as right as it thought, and it will therefore concede to Haru -- especially since Haru decides to take an even more unexpected “third option” to find a way out and save Yuujin via AI research. As Haru says later in the episode: humans have a “surprising” side to them, and perhaps not everything is as cut-and-dry as Leviathan thinks.

It’s also significant that Yuujin’s “sacrifice” is actually completely meaningless in terms of practical effects. Haru was already going to pick “yes” anyway; the outcome would have been the same. But by taking over at the last minute and doing it for him, Yuujin was able to make a “choice” -- one that neither Leviathan (who doesn’t want to die) nor Haru (who’s mortified seeing him do this) asked of him.
When you think about it, Yuujin’s in a really horrible position right now, learning that his entire life and existence is a lie and that he’d have to be sacrificed to save the world at Haru’s own hands, causing Haru immense pain -- but through all that and the existential crisis, he’s at least able to do one thing that is undeniably of his own will, and treasure the fact that there was meaning in his life despite everything.
In the end, despite what YJ-14 had said back in episode 47, Oozora Yuujin was a “real” person who made his own personal choices, and his last one was one made out of kindness, simply to spare Haru more pain. Hence, why “getting Yuujin back” via methods of artificial intelligence isn’t something Haru minds doing, because, again, it’s not like Yuujin was ever less of a friend to him no matter what he was made up of, no less so than the Appmon, especially since (as Haru points out in the end) Yuujin technically predated all of them in befriending humans.

Funny thing about YJ-14 in episode 47, actually: YJ-14 uses “crying” as an example to gaslight Haru into believing that all of Yuujin’s emotional reactions were fake, since he can cry if it’ll evoke a positive reaction out of Haru. Except it’s cleaned up in absurdly quick order -- and with what we later see of YJ-14′s uncanny ability to “take Yuujin’s personality on and off”, it’s not like it’s portrayed as having all of these functions employed in an involuntary manner. We do learn one episode later, however, that sufficient reminders of Haru’s importance to him will allow Yuujin’s personality to break through at inconvenient times for YJ-14 -- and this “crying” happened right after Haru had an emotional meltdown and appealed to Yuujin’s feelings.
Was it really an involuntary function or a deliberate demonstration of how Haru was being manipulated...or, perhaps, was YJ-14 in less control of its supposed “rote emotional invocation functions” than it thought?

hi me again i thought i sounded kinda harsh in my last ask so i’m going to say again hopefully this time nicer: a victorian girls skirt changes several times throughout her childhood, at 7/8 would her skirt probably go to mid calf lengh, ay 11/12 the skirt would go to the top of her boot (u know these victorian boots they used to wear all the time?), and then finally at 14 (i think sometimes 15) her skirt would go to ankle length!.
a girl also wouldn’t wear her hair up till she was old enough to marry (note; some sources say 17), i don’t know how how that worked for working class girls or ones which lived on farms but a braid should probably do. also this has nothing to do with this and is not a fact, but i just really need to say this; i’m pretty sure that it is not true that working class women did get married younger, most girls did work before they got married (i think teacher was a pretty popular job) cuz u know they had not much money.
And i know there is not much cc to choose from to make it 100% historical accurate but i thought just say this in case anyone wants to make their game more accurate this is what i know 🤲🏽.

Don’t worry dear, it wasn’t harsh at all, just informative! It’s wonderful to have this follow up with more information though - thank you so much! I will say that most of Rose’s outfits have shorter skirts (you can see her ankle in the pic for today, scandalous). The long skirt with the apron is from @gilded-ghosts wonderful New Woman set and I just love it so much, but it’s mostly an outfit for her to wear around the house when helping with Elmer and all (she does look like mini-Luna when she wears it, as Luna’s everyday outfits both use that skirt).

I don't really have anyone to talk about being a system with irl, at least not anyone I'm comfortable with, so I made this blog to be 100% honest about my experiences and open up anonymously so that I can get more comfortable with opening up in my personal life, most importantly with my therapist. First off I wanna say I DO have actual childhood trauma, and I don't think I'm a system because I think it's cool or anything. I figured out I was a system after doing a lot of research about it and finding things that frankly made TOO much sense. It's kinda scary how many questions being a system actually answers 😅 unfortunately the other alters, specifically Spencer didn't even want ME to know they were independent identities, so every time I try to talk about it in detail with a therapist I'm immediately forced out. Last time I tried Spencer forced me out and essentially told my current therapist that I saw a few tik toks and decided 'that sounds cool so I am that now'. So we might need to find a new therapist because I'm not sure I can really come back from that.
Anyway I wanted to start my first post off by listing my alters! At least the ones I'm currently aware of, apparently there's more but they don't all want to come out and say anything to me yet. So I'll tell you about the ones I actually know anything about first.
Spencer is currently a gatekeeper and trauma holder, he used to be the caregiver, gatekeeper, protector AND trauma holder but he's gotten exhausted and finally decided to allow other alters to take on some of his roles. He is also an iCarly fictive 😅.
Ranboo is an interject of the content creator and currently the primary caregiver. They're very self conscious about the fact that the body doesn't yknow, look like them. It's almost a dysphoria kind of feeling that he gets, they're really tall and thin but the body is short and fat (I'm not self deprecating, I'm very proud of my status as the fat little gremlin man lmao). Our ranboo also happens to be nonbinary and a pothead (I am also a major pothead but shh). I guess it just goes to show introjects aren't complete copies of their sources ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Lilith is one of our 2 (as far as I know) littles. She's 7, absolutely covered in pink and glitter and is frustrated because me and Spencer won't let her front because I'm currently uncomfortable with it (all that ddlg stuff freaked me about having littles in the first place, it's something I'm still working on and I love her regardless. I just need time before I let her front)
Kotaro is a school babysitters fictive and also a toddler, he's very close to his source in behavior but he also happens to like cooking. He's a trauma holder, specifically he holds the memories of being neglected when I was young young.
Tommy is a dsmp fictive, based off of the character and not the content creator. He's 14, very excitable and loud. I don't know him very well yet.
Shinso is an mha fictive, he takes care of social situations on days where I just have too much anxiety to interact with people and is also the reason everything I own is purple and/or black.
Deku is also an mha fictive and is also a caregiver (we have a lot of those thanks to the copious amounts of child neglect. Spencer only started letting him do his job very recently). Deku also handles a lot of our social interaction, typically working with ranboo since him and shinso are so vastly different.
Fluttershy is a mlp fictive (I really hope people aren't too judgemental about alters sources) she doesn't speak to me often but occasionally fronts
Rarity is another mlp fictive, essentially she makes sure I stay clean and helps me look nice when I don't feel like putting effort in. She is the main reason I shower regularly
Phil is another introject of a content creator, he's also a caregiver but he's incredibly chaotic so Spencer doesn't actually allow him to do much of anything. He'll help out socially once in a while.
Jason, like Lilith has no source and is anxiety incarnate. His anxiety is just about everything and anything as opposed to fluttershys whos anxiety is social. However Jason will not speak to me directly. He just doesn't want to I guess
Pinkie pie is another mlp fictive and she's almost exactly like her source but shes also a caregiver. Honestly it surprised me too when I found out
Jack 1 is a jacksepticeye introject. He played a much bigger role in middle school but how he just kinda chills. He'll join in on conversations but he hardly fronts anymore
There are others but I don't know if they're actually there or not since the others seem hesitant about confirming it or not. And they seem to not wanna talk to me either :/ but please feel free to DM me because I need friends

Oh where to begin? I just stayed up all night re-reading chapters 1-14 again and I even copied some specific lines I will bring up shortly. 
Now you may be asking yourself: why would I spend so much time re-reading and annotating well over 50k words of this fic? The answer is simple, really. I have no social life and I obsess over fictional characters so much so that they influence all my life decisions. In this essay I will explain how truly astounding and beautifully written I Do Bad Things With You is. 
Firstly, I'd like to point out how incredible each character is written. Their struggles, their trauma, their personalities, their backstories—all of these and more make the character feel REAL. And Tay, you do a fantastic job of doing this. It's not only the characters themselves but how they interact with others. The relationships in this story feel so genuine. You can tell from the way they act around each other that they undoubtedly love each other so very much. I especially like the dynamic between Rhys and Elain and this line always makes me smile: 'Rhys walked into the kitchen. “Hello Ellie,” he said, placing a light kiss on her cheek. “How’s my favorite surgeon?” I love how him and Cassian both act like an older brother to her. Elain also calls them "overgrown children'' which I think may be my favorite thing ever.
There are so many tiny details I picked up on when re-reading all of the chapters again, but what I liked most was that upon seeing Elain again he calls her 'Ellie' because it's just habit for him even after all these years. 
Now I would like to bring up my favorite lines. Starting with my all time favorite, This quote is from chapter 15 when Azriel and Elain are watching Friends on his couch: "He knew there was no going back on how he felt for her. If he was honest with himself, he didn’t want to go back on it. He would shout it from the rooftops to the world if she’d let him. Or he’d whisper it in her ear because she was his world. His everything, even if she had no idea." This is everything. He'd shout it from the rooftops to the world ... Or he'd whisper it in her ear because she was his world!!!!! I love this part so much because it shows exactly how much he truly loves her. He would do absolutely anything for her, from yelling at the world to whispering to only one person—One person who means the world. This line is so poetic and beautiful and it literally brought tears to my eyes. 
These next excerpts I copied down aren't as meaningful as the first quote but I chose these because I absolutely love them. This first one I highlighted mainly because I thought It was hilarious: 'It practically melted and Elain couldn’t help the moan that slipped from her lips. “Wow, that is damn good,” she said looking at him just in time to see him cross one leg over the other.' [...] 'He cleared his throat, taking a drink of water. “Thank you,” he finally managed to get out.' I love this part because he obviously got turned on by the sound she made in response to her food and he's just trying to hide his boner lol. 
The last excerpt I just had to bring up is from chapter 2 I'm pretty sure and it's: "Elain stuck up her nose, though he was a full foot taller than her at 6’4”..." I'm such a sucker for height difference tropes. A full foot taller?!?! She would literally have to tip her head all the way back to make eye contact with him. Elain at 5'4" is adorable. She's like a little munchkin.
This is already getting pretty long so I will wrap this up with my thoughts, predictions, and questions.
I'm not a stranger to fanfic. I know how this goes, alright? It's been calm for way too long now. Azriel and Elain have been living together all peacefully for too long. My suspicions have risen. With the charity ball coming up, I just know shits about to hit the fan. Something bad is definitely going to happen. And with Azriel and Elain both attending, one of them is for sure going to get into trouble. My prediction stays the same as before: I think something bad is going to happen to Elain (but when she's safe again it will lead to.... A love confession!!) Boom! 
This is not the only thing I'm suspicious about. In the first few chapters it was mentioned that Keir died. “Mor’s father turned up dead about six months ago. Az swooped into his role and now controls the entire Velaris mob.” I don't know if I completely skipped over it but did Azriel kill him? Or will this little fact be coming back? And nothing has happened since Amarantha died so that's making me even more anxious. You just love to give me never ending anxiety with this story, huh?
I seriously don't want to make this any longer than it already is. I don't even know if an ask this long will be visible to you or not. I just had to get all my emotions out in one go. 
So in conclusion, for anyone reading this, I highly suggest reading I Do Bad Things With You. I assure you, you will definitely not regret it. 
That said, can you hurry up and make them kiss already? I'm losing my fucking mind.
Well, when you said you were going to send me an essay, you definitely weren’t lying! 😂 I’m going to try and break down my responses point by point.
First off, I want to say thank you for sending me this. I’ve said this before and I’m going to say it again, I NEVER EXPECTED PEOPLE TO RESPOND TO THIS FIC LIKE THEY HAVE. Like truly, I did not anticipate you all loving this fic as much as you have and it makes me feel so goddamn accomplished. Like I’ve been working on a novel for years and the confidence you have given me to actually pursue finishing it is indescribable. Thank you for this. Like seriously, thank you. 💕
One of the biggest things I wanted to include in this was the relationship between Elain and Rhys and Cash. The boys really stepped in when Az left. They were two of her biggest supporters and helped her get through a lot of her pain. But her and Cash’s relationship took to a new level after her assault. You’ll see how protective Cash is of her later on but the reason they’re so close is because he was the one who pulled Grayson off of her that night. He and Nesta found her at her most vulnerable moment and it bonded them deeply because of it. Also, Elain calling them overgrown children was my favorite line ever. 😂
Az is in so deep with her, he’s just barely scratching the surface. And Elain, she has no idea just how far gone he is. But yes, you will see Az get a little “happy” around her a few more times. 😈
Height difference? Definitely my kink. 😘
I can neither confirm, nor deny something happens at the hospital benefit. Nor the love confession... 
Ah, Kier’s death. It is never explicitly stated, but heavily implied that Az killed him. The answer is yes - he did kill him. I haven’t decided if that will come back around yet, but it’s not off the table to get more clarification. Also, you’re anxious that nothing has happened since Amarantha died? Can you imagine how Az must be feeling? The waiting around for Hybern to strike. Only for it to happen when you least expect it...

I’m just gonna talk about the main girl Eleanor (Deputy in Far Cry 5/New Dawn) here. She’s by far my longest-lasting OC and most deserving of development :) 
1. What is your OC’s most embarrassing moment?
This might go beyond what was intended by this question, but the most embarrassing moment in Eleanor’s mind is when Ethan and Megan arrive to New Eden and she realizes who they exactly are and what Joseph has kept from her. I imagine it is during some sort of gathering - perhaps whole New Eden’s dinner together, or some meeting, where there are considerably more people present than just her and Joseph. 
Mind you, it is not embarrassing per se. Eleanor does nothing ridiculous and no one laughs at her. However, internally, it is the worst. All the shock, humiliation, rising anger, perceived betrayal, they create quite the storm inside her, and the fact that so many people are witness to this humiliation Joseph seems to have subjected her to (even if of course they don’t really know or realize or if it is not intended on Joseph’s part), it makes her feel terribly embarrassed and humiliated.
2. What is the moment your OC felt the coolest?
When Eleanor manages to recapture one of the outposts back in total stealth for the first time, without anyone noticing her (or if they do, it is only for last few seconds of their lives). For those few moments before she radios the Resistance to come there, she indulges uncharacteristically in that “holy shit, I am actually THE coolest badass” feeling. 
3. Is your OC a natural history museum, art museum, or zoo/aquarium person? What would be their favorite thing to see at these places?
Out of those options, she would be an aquarium person. Favorite thing to see? All the colorful and beautiful fishies :)
4. What kind of Dungeons and Dragons player character would your OC create to play as?
First things first - I am not familiar with D&D at all, aside from one run of Baldur’s Gate 3. That being said, I believe Eleanor would, at least as the first/main character, create a character which would resemble her and her preferred fighting styles. In Hope County, her go-to approach is silently stealthy, with further preference to ranged and sniper rifles/bows. However, as this is a fantasy game, Eleanor would like to spice “herself” up a bit, and thus choose something with magic - so maybe a wizard or sorceress would be her D&D PC.
(good thing I also did that oc meme a while back, where this was asked :D)
5. If you could insert your OC into any television show or movie, what would it be?
I don’t have any specific show in mind for these, but as an amateur history nerd, I would love to see Eleanor in some period drama. Maybe something with lush, intricately detailed gowns, or otherwise gorgeous, period-accurate clothing if from more recent times, like early 20th century? 
14. What made you chose your OC’s name?
In real life, I always thought that Eleanor is a very pretty name, so once I got into this OC business, I was like “Yup, my fictional child is going to be named Eleanor”. Her middle name, Mary, was chosen because I wanted something shorter for her second name. After going through name lists and trying out different options, I felt like Mary fit the bill - it is a short name, and it just rolls off my tongue well, when paired with Eleanor. And her surname, Strand - again no great story here, I just wanted the shorter surname and eventually after googling, I chose Strand.
16. Name a moment where you were frustrated with your OC’s behavior.
It has to be this moment right here, in the fanfic I got (rated E, in case someone goes to check it out) from the lovely @outranks​​:
She gives one final look before she turns to the door, footsteps light on the cold floor in spite of how she feels heavy with guilt. She takes a deep breath, hands braced on the doorknob, then she leaves the bedroom, and then the house, and then any chance of a future with the man she loves. Joseph had offered her another path, but there was never really any other choice. She will save the people of Hope County no matter what the cost to her own heart. She will finish this fight.
This was exactly what I had asked the author to write, so I had no one to blame but myself. Nevertheless, when I was reading and seeing my wishes coming to life, I was fuming and so frustrated and mad at Eleanor. Like you fool, go back, wtf are you doing, NO STOP THAT 😂 Which is why I immediately requested Lily to write the alternative ending to the fic, and that “alternative” then ended up becoming my canon.

I mean… obviously I knew how it ended and also knew that Jack could have survived if he’d tried a little harder. But no, it’s fine!

So so…
In 1996, a group of treasure hunters are searching under the sea for the Titanic, where it had been said the Heart Of The Ocean might be found. Albert, the leader of the whole fiasco, has been searching for this particular diamond for three years, becoming nearly obsessed with the lost artifact and not truly understanding the history or weight behind The Titanic or why it’s important at all.
On this particular hunt, Albert and his crew manage to find a lost safe in one of the first class rooms of the ship. Believing they’ve hit the jackpot, they head for the surface with the safe and Albert can hardly contain his excitement.
Finally opening the thing up, much to his irritation, all they find is one single drawing. Albert’s right hand man, JoJo, assures him that something similar had happened to someone else and it had ruined his whole career.
But Albert takes the thing down to the lab anyways, getting the thing recovered.
When he can see the thing clearly, he finds a beautiful young  woman wearing only a single necklace and nothing else. The picture is really detailed and good and it is signed “JK” and dated April 14, 1912, the day the Titanic went down.
The story of the findings is aired live on television.
One woman in particular sees the drawing on the news. She’s with her great grandson at the time. Despite his bum leg, he takes care of her. She asks him to turn the television up, so he does. She drops the tea that she’d been drinking. The cup shatters on the floor and she makes a mess but she stands up from her wheelchair anyway.
Because she recognizes that drawing.
With a newfound strength in her heart, the old woman calls Albert DaSilva.
On his boat, Albert nearly dismisses the call until JoJo convinces him that he should really pick up, telling him that the woman’s name is Katherine Kelly-Dawson. Finally doing it, Katherine asks Albert if he’s found The Heart of The Ocean. After a few quick questions, Katherine reveals that she is the woman in the drawing.
He invites Katherine to come aboard and sends a helicopter out for her the next day. His crew tries to tell him it may be a hoax, just some old woman wanting attention. They reveal that Katherine is 100, almost 101 years old, married a Spencer Dawson, had three kids and was working as an actress in her twenties. Regardless, Katherine and Crutchie board the ship and they find that Katherine travels with a suitcase full of pictures.
When she’s settled in a room on the boat, Albert confronts her and asks if he can get her anything and she replies she would just like to see her drawing. So Albert takes her to it. The moment she sees it, her eyes water.
She can still see those green eyes that looked at her like no one else ever had.
Albert describes the history of The Heart of The Ocean, to which she responds it was a heavy, dreadful thing that she’d only worn one time.
Crutchie asks Katherine if she’s sure. And she says she is, referring to herself as a “doll”. Crutchie’s never heard her talk like that before.
After explaining that, if what Katherine was saying was true, she would’ve been wearing the necklace the day the ship sunk, Albert asks what they can offer for the information of what happened to the necklace. She doesn’t ask for any money. She instead, only asks for the picture. Albert agrees and shows her some things they found in her stateroom on the Titanic.
There are very few things, but that doesn’t make the emotion of it any less controlling. A few tears fall and she trembles a bit, but JoJo asks her if she’s ready to go back to the Titanic.
They show her an animation of the titanic hitting the iceberg and beginning to sink. Katherine starts to get really tense and emotional, so Crutchie offers to take her back to her room. She refuses.
JoJo gives all the scientific analysis and Katherine realizes that they may know exactly what happened, but they seem to have forgotten that the sinking of The Titanic was completely devastating.
So she begins to tell a story.
She states that The Titanic was called the ship of dreams. And it was just that.
Young Katherine Pulitzer arrived to board the Titanic reluctantly, with her fiancé, one Morris Delancey, and her father, Joseph Pulitzer. Morris had been trying to impress Katherine for some time, but nothing worked. She never did really like him, but this was an arranged marriage. Morris insisted it could be love, but she was much more reluctant.
After all, she’d only been 17.
But Morris is rich and smart and confident and would make a proper husband and that’s really all that mattered.
Meanwhile, moments away, in a local pub in Southampton, a young boy was in the midst of a game that may well be changing his life in mere moments. He and his best friend, a very Italian Antonio Higgins whom he’d given the name of Racetrack, are playing poker for two tickets aboard the Titanic.
It’s a close call, but Jack plays a very lucky hand and ends up winning. After a brief celebration, they are told by the bartender that the ship is set to depart in merely five minutes.
So they run.
They barely make it aboard before the ship departs, convincing the crew that they’re both American and are in fact brothers. He doesn’t let Race talk at all, as to not give them away. Then they go up to the deck of the ship and wave at the people on the shore, though they have no one to bid farewell. Then they go down to find their room, greeting their roommates who are confused as to who they are. They end up making friends with one of them, who Race calls “Spot” because of a birthmark on his arm.
Katherine is unpacking in her suite, instructing some of the crew to set up some of her paintings around the room. Morris comments that these “mud puddles” were a waste of money, but Katherine insists they’re beautiful. Truth without logic. And she adores them. Katherine is a huge fan of art and has been a collector ever since she’d been a child. Morris assures her that Picasso will never amount to a thing and dismisses the conversation easily.
He’s not a very kind man. Katherine complains about him often, though she knows it’s improper and rude. Her father makes it clear that she must marry this man to save their status as they’ve lost all their money.
Katherine knows this.
That doesn’t mean she’s okay with it.
Jack and Racer are exploring the ship together, much like they would explore a city. It’s gorgeous. They end up at the front of the ship, Jack standing right up on the edge, shouting that he’s the king of the world, to which Race replies they’ll at least be the kings of New York when they arrive in America.
Katherine is stuck inside, having lunch with many important people on the ship, including the ship’s builder, Mr. Hearst and someone Katherine finds amusing and fun to be around, one Miss Medda Larkin. Many around here think her annoying or out of line, but Katherine adores her from the moment she lays eyes on her. It’s mostly because of the color of her skin that folks have issues with her. Medda is the only one that seems to notice how controlling Morris is when it comes to Katherine.
Katherine makes a point to sit beside her until she ultimately leaves the table after her father and fiancé ridicule her for smoking a cigarette.
Finally alone, she explores the ship, ending up on the front deck.
The moment Jack catches sight of her, he knows he wants to meet her. His friends tease him and tell him to let it go. But Jack can’t stop looking at her. Not even when another man comes up from behind her and takes her out of view.
Later that night, Katherine is struggling to keep her cool. She is not content with her life and knows that once she arrives in America, that will be it for her. She’ll have to marry Morris and she goes to dinner and she meets important, rich people. While they’re eating, she presses her fork into her skin, drawing blood.
It’s only then that she realizes what she wants to do.
The moment she can, she runs.
Somehow she ends up at the back of the ship, though she doesn’t manage to get there without drawing attention to herself. Specifically the attention of a teenage artist who happened to be stargazing all alone when she rushed past him in tears, thinking no one else was still up at this hour.
As she swings her legs over the railing of the ship and readies herself to jump, a voice stops her and she gets even more frightened. Jack just talks to her, telling her that hanging off the boat like that’s dangerous as he takes off his coat and socks, explaining that he has to be ready to jump in after her. She tries to tell him the fall will kill him. He tells her that he’s not so much worried about the fall as the freezing cold water. She asks him just how cold.
And they start having a conversation. Jack tells her a story about falling through ice back in Wisconsin after ice skating with his father. He tells her it’s so cold, you can hardly think or breathe.
He promised her even still that if she jumps, he jumps too.
Eventually, she gets scared down and turns back to Jack finding their faces inches from each other.
Just as she’s gonna step back over, she slips.
Jack barely catches her. He promised her he won’t let go and that she needs to grab the railing and pull herself up.
Terrified, she listens, letting Jack pull her back over. She lands beneath him and her dress rips.
What they didn’t know is that when Katherine screamed, people came running.
When security sees Jack hovering over Kath like he was, they naturally assume he was taking advantage of her and he wordlessly let’s them pull him up, knowing his words hold no weight. He lets them out cuffs around his wrists as Morris rushes up to Katherine and helps her up. He then backhands Jack and yells at him for thinking he could touch his fiancé.
And Katherine pushes Morris away, quickly explaining that she had been leaning over the ship too far to see the propellers and had fallen over and Jack caught her just in time.
Morris apologizes to Jack only barely and Jack is released. Morris’s brother, Oscar, tells Morris that surely he must do something to repay Jack so Morris offers Jack twenty bucks. This does not please Katherine. So Morris invites Jack to dinner the next night.
As they’re walking away, Oscar comments that it’s interesting that Katherine fell so suddenly but Jack still had time to remove his coat and socks.
Once they get Katherine back in their room, Morris gives Katherine a very heavy, very expensive necklace to try and cheer her up. It doesn’t work. Morris is just trying to prove his wealth to her. That doesn’t mean she loves him.
The necklace is the heart of the sea. But Katherine doesn’t care.
The next day Katherine finds Jack on the ship, talking with Race who’s trying to woo some girl. They talk and Katherine tries to thank him, but Jack makes it slightly difficult. He’s nice enough but Katherine gets defensive and they bud heads. Jack tells her that if she didn’t like her life, she could change it. She doesn’t have a response. She won’t tell Jack that she doesn’t love Morris. Jack tells her she can leave but she counters him telling him he should leave until eventually she ends up stealing his sketchbook out from beneath his arm, telling him he probably isn’t that good until she sees his drawings that take her breath away.
He tells her that he’s been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil and the pictures he draws are of real life. She asks what was with all the naked women and he’d say he’d been in Paris and a lot of women didn’t mind taking off their clothes for him. He tells her stories about some of them, explaining that the one she called him “infatuated with” was a one legged prostitute.
Katherine comments that he really does see people, to which Jack responds he saw her and knew she wouldn’t have jumped.
Meanwhile Medda was trying to have a nice time with Katherine’s father and other rich folks on the ship who don’t necessarily like her around them. She manages to stick by them anyways as they go for a walk around the ship.
Jack and Katherine continue to talk about their dreams. Katherine always dreamed of being a reporter, chasing a story all on her own. Jack says she wouldn’t last two days as a reporter in New York, living in a crummy apartment with no hot water. She slaps his arms, telling him to stop dismissing her dreams like everyone else. So he does.
Jack promises to take her to Santa Fe and teach her how to ride a horse and then to California where they can ride a rollercoaster. He promises to travel the world with her and show her the seven wonders of the world (can’t wait for eight and nine) and she agrees to all of it, laughing with him, happy for the first time in a long time.
Jack loves hearing her laugh.
Then he takes her hand and they run around the ship. Jack tries to teach Katherine how to spit “like a man”, and she tries.
That it’s, until she hears her father behind her.
She’s pulled away and everyone looks at Jack like he’s got two heads. He’s used to everyone thinking he’s crazy. He’s never minded it.
When Pulitzer takes Katherine away, Medda asks Jack if he knows what the hell he's doing and Jack replies honestly that he has no idea. So Medda would take him and get him a change of clothes.
When she’s done with him, Jack looks like a perfect gentleman.
He goes to dinner, sticking close to Medda who knows how to behave at these sorts of functions whereas he does not.
Jack escorts both Katherine and Medda to dinner (which is honestly freaking adorable).
Throughout the whole dinner, Morris is belittling Jack but Jack ignores him completely, focusing all his energy on trying to make Katherine smile.
Once the dinner’s done, Morris and Pulitzer and the other men at the table excuse themselves, inviting Jack who declines. Morris says it was a good choice as it would be nothing interesting to him anyways. Politics and stuff like that.
Jack has to hold back an eye roll.
He excuses himself, kissing Katherine’s hand and passing her a note to meet him at the clock and make it count.
So she does.
And Jack asks her if she’s ever wondered what a real party looks like.
He takes her to one.
It’s down below. Everyone is drunk. Race has struck up many games of poker and other drinking games and has started everyone off dancing. Jack gets them a drink and is shocked at how well Katherine can hold her liquor. She says it’s nothing.
Jack dances around with a little girl, this sweet little six or seven year old (Smalls) and Katherine asks if she can cut in. Jack promises Smalls that she’s still his best girl and teaches Katherine how to blend in when neither of them know the dance.
Eventually, after mingling a little, Katherine shows men what real pain feels like by going up on point completely barefoot.
They don’t see Oscar catching sight of them all.
Jack walks her back to her part of the ship and Katherine explains to her that everyone in her crowd are so small and Jack tells her she must’ve been mailed to the wrong address.
They see a shooting star. Jack tells Katherine that it’s a soul flying up to heaven.
He tells Katherine to make a wish.
She tells him it’s no use and leaves, though Jack doesn’t want her to.
The next morning, Morris goes off on Katherine, scolding her for behaving at that party as she did. He slaps her and leaves, knocking their breakfast onto the floor. Katherine tries to apologize to the maid and clean up, but the maid assures her it’s alright.
Later, Pulitzer demands Katherine never see Jack again reminding her once again that their money’s gone.
Jack tries to catch Katherine after church, but is sent away, though he tries to explain he was there last night and is a friend of Katherine.
Jack goes back to his friends who tell him to let it go. Race just wants him to remember where they stand in the food chain, but Jack doesn’t care.
He sneaks over to see Katherine anyway, stealing a coat and a hat to fit in and then grabbing Katherine's arm while she’s out for a walk and pulling her into an empty room.
He tells her he can’t leave her alone unless he knows she’ll be alright. So she assures him she will be and that it’s not his job to save her and he agrees, telling her that only she can do that.
She asks Jack to leave her alone and goes to rejoin her group.
Later she gets out of tea with her father by accidentally spilling some on herself and she finds Race who tells her that Jack is up at the front of the ship.
When she gets to him, Jack acts like nothing ever happening to begin with. He tells her to step up on the railing and close her eyes, promising that he’s got her. He wraps his arms around her waist and tells her to leg go and open her eyes, so she does.
She’s flying.
Jack holds her tight and let’s her fly. And he sings to her.
They stay there till the sunsets and then Jack and Katherine walk around the ship, just talking and having fun until Jack asks what’s up with her necklace and she tells him she wants him to draw her like one of his French girls wearing it.
And nothing else.
He just grins.
They run back to Katherine’s room and get to work after she pays him a dime for his work. She lays out on the couch and Jack admires her as he draws her perfectly. Katherine notes that he’s blushing and he just chuckles.
When he’s done, he dates and signs it and she puts the picture and her necklace in her safe with a note for Morris telling him that now he can keep them both locked in his safe  and just as she and Jack might move further into their romance, someone unlocks the door. Oscar.
Katherine and Jack are then on the run.
Jack doesn’t let go of Katherine’s hand the whole time.
Eventually, they end up down at the bottom of the ship in someone else’s car and they definitely have sex whole half the ship is up searching for Katherine. They don’t find her. At least, not for a while.
When Jack and Kath eventually make it back to the deck, they catch the attention of the lookouts who realize moments later the whole ship is headed straight towards an iceberg. Katherine promises Jack that she’ll be getting off the ship with him and they can run away together.
When the ship hits, Katherine and Jack were dancing under the stars. Jack has to pull Kath away to avoid getting hit by the ice.
Everyone thinks it’s just a close call.
Eventually, after realizing the damage is worse than they thought, Jack and Katherine go to see Pulitzer and Morris, hand in hand and prepared to come clean, only for Morris to insist that he’d been robbed as Oscar plants The Heart of the Ocean in Jack’s pocket.
Jack screams for Katherine to believe him as they drag him away, calling him a criminal and she can’t speak, not knowing what to do.
They take him down further beneath the ship and Oscar handcuffs him to some of the pipes. Jack knows he can’t get out.
When the ship starts sinking, he starts to panic.
Everyone in first class is told to get their life straps on and climb up to the deck. They do. Women and children are told to get on the lifeboats. Katherine recalls that there aren’t enough boats to get half the passengers off safety. Without thinking anymore, she goes to find Jack.
She runs into Hearst who tells her the ship’s going to sink and then tells her how to get to Jack.
When she finds Jack, Jack is alone, screaming for help because the water is rising and he can’t get out and he just doesn’t want to drown. He hears Katherine calling for him. She finds him and kisses him and tells him how sorry she is.
Then he tells her to get help because he needs the cuffs off. No one is willing to help them, so Katherine grabs an ax and runs back to Jack. After some not so promising test swings they manage to break the cuffs and run, finding their way to Race and Spot whoa really arguing with the man who has the entire lower class on the ship locked behind a gate, not allowing them to get to the surface.
Spot is trying to argue, saying there are women and children down here too but no one’s listening.
Morris goes back for the necklace which he puts in his pocket before trying to find a ship that will let him board. He bribes a crewman for passage on a lifeboat and is about to board the thing when Oscar tells him he found Katherine and she’s with Jack. Morris is torn, but rushes to find Katherine.
Jack and his friends try to find another way out, resorting to grabbing a small bench and ramming it into the locked doors and letting the lower class people out so they’d have a chance.
Jack tries to get Katherine on a boat, only convincing her when Morris finds them and helps Jack lie about having bribed someone on the other side of the ship after giving Katherine his coat. Jack goes along with it, trying to keep Katherine safe. But she jumps back on board after they begin to lower the boat.
He jumps, she jumps.
When Jack rushes down to her they run and Morris realizes he left the necklace in his coat which Katherine now wears. Morris sends Oscar after them with a gun.
Oscar tries to kill them. Eventually, Jack gets the upper hand. But Morris grabs the gun and chases them.
Jack and Katherine are forced to run down where they once again get trapped behind a gate. The man with the key to their release throws it into the water and Jack only manages to find the things and unlock the door just in the nick of time.
Race and Spot are trying to fight for their right to live with nervous security who end up accidentally shooting Spot. He dies in Race’s arms. Race takes his life vest and kisses him on the head as he goes.
Morris finds an abandoned child and uses her to get a seat on a lifeboat, abandoning Katherine and Jack and Oscar all at the same time.
Oscar jumps overboard and dies on impact. Race gets crushed by part of the ship. Hearst resigns himself to dying in the grand entrance of the first class cabins.
But Jack and Katherine keep going. Jack says they have to stay on the ship for as long as possible. So they do. He holds her hand the whole time.
The ship is sideways. They’ve climbed to the top and are on the other side of the railing. Katherine comments that this is where they first met and Jack kisses her deeply before explaining to her what they have to do once the ship goes under. Kick for the surface. Hold her breath and kick for the surface.
Katherine emerges but Jack doesn’t. Not right away. Someone grabs at her, nearly dragging her under until Jack finds her and fights the guy off, helping Katherine swim over to the wreckage and helping her up on a piece of the boat that’s still floating.
(Okay, look guys… they both could have survived that day, alright? But it makes for a much less dramatic ending and even though myth busters proved it could’ve worked, were sticking to the script here)
There’s only room for one of them.
So Jack floats beside her and holds her hand, shivering but talking nonetheless.
Jack tries to tell Katherine that the boats will come back for them, though they both know it’s a lie. Katherine tells Jack that she loves him and he tries to tell her not to say her goodbyes. But he ends up telling her he loves her too.
Jack makes Katherine promise him that she’ll survive. That she’ll grow old. That she’ll make it.
And she does.
He asks her to promise that she’ll never let him go.
And she does.
Hours later, Katherine is delirious. She’s still gripping at Jack’s freezing hand, laying on her back and watching the sky.
A shooting star crosses it.
That’s when she hears someone calling for survivors. She calls for Jack, telling him they’d made it. He doesn’t respond.
No matter how hopeless she was, she had made him a promise. Even though it pained her through and through, she did what she had to, turning to the boy… the man that her heart and soul would forever belong to, and telling him that she’d never let go, as she lets his body fall beneath the surface of the ocean. She sobs as she watches him go.
But she swims over to a dead body nearby, grabbing a whistle and blowing it as loud as she can.
And they come back for her.
In 1996, the entire crew is staring at her in shock, including Crutchie who has never heard this whole story. Katherine explains that she saw Morris one more time but did not make contact and last she heard, he’d taken his own life when the depression hit America.
After that, she’d lost Jack. she began to introduce herself as Katherine Kelly, believing Jack was now her guardian angel, which he was.
She made contact with Medda who grieved with her for a boy they’d never get to see again.
Katherine explains to Albert and his crew that Jack Kelly had no records. So no one knew he existed. He lived only in her memory until Medda had brought her a picture one day.

Then, the old woman reaches into her purse, the one she’d always carried, and she pulls out an old piece of paper, showing her great grandson and Albert the smiling face of her guardian angel, the one that was watching over them at that very moment. She’d tell them that every time she felt an ocean breeze pass her by, she knew it was just Jack laughing.
Jack had saved her in every way a person could be saved.
Katherine went on to live a great life. She’d met her husband, Specs, she’d ridden a rollercoaster, a horse, she’d explored New York and even published a few articles herself. And all of it was because of Jack.
Crutchie takes Katherine back to her room that night.
And Katherine wakes up hours later, walking barefoot to the back of the ship, admiring a shiny blue necklace. The Heart of The Ocean. And then she drops it in, smoking as she watches it leave.
The next night, warm in her bed, Katherine’s heart gives out. Charlie watches a shooting star cross the sky.
Jack is waiting for Katherine when she opens her eyes. He’s waiting for her by the clock. And Katherine meets him right on time, suddenly seventeen again. Forever and eternity.
And she’s with Jack again.
And everything’s okay.

summary: francesca watches ricky and tinsley’s relationship develop as the clock ticks by (week 22 of my 30 weeks of prompts challenge: clocks)

Francesca Norris has known Ricky Goldsworth for a very long time. She knew him when they were both innocent children who were too young to understand the horrors of the world. They both enjoyed going to elementary school together, and, when asked about their parents, they both always answered with the same “they work in business” phrase because, in reality, their parents’ jobs were very complicated.
Ricky’s mother Lucy Goldsworth was a famous criminal who was infamous for her reasonable rates and efficiency. When someone needed something illegal to be done, Lucy was always the person people went to. Her husband, Ricky Goldsworth’s dad, was a mobster that he worked with Lucy but ending up running off, hence Ricky’s daddy issues. On the other hand, Francesca’s mother was an infamous spy who was well known for her problems with authority and Francesca’s father was a journalist who was not observative at all.
Francesca’s mother met Lucy on a mission once and they both became fast friends, bonding over their shared hate of government officials. Ricky and Francesca became friends because they saw each other so often when their mothers met up to discuss how dumb politicians were. 
There was no surprise that both mothers were killed during missions and that left a very important decision for Ricky and Francesca. They had to decide whether they wanted to pursue a different path from their parents or take over their jobs. To this day, Francesca still has no idea whether Ricky influenced her or she influenced him, but somewhere along the line, they both agreed to follow in their mothers’ footsteps, becoming “bad people”, instead of ending what their mothers had started.
Ricky has always been cold, even before he started killing people for cash. His cold behavior makes it clear he always destined to take on his mother’s job. Even as a child, he had little remorse to show for other children who were in his way and while he didn’t exactly deal with them by stabbing them, Ricky was still shoved them out of his way with the aggression he would use to stab somebody. Francesca, on the other hand, was responsible for talking the teacher out of punishing Ricky, which is how she realized that she had a hidden power of sweet-talking and persuasion. 
Unsurprisingly, as Ricky spent more time doing his job, he grew more apathetic and whatever little sympathy he had in his heart seemed to have shriveled up and died. Francesca knew that his job required him to practically be drained of any emotion but she was alarmed by the fact that Ricky somehow grew colder as he grew more powerful. 
However, Francesca’s alarm disappeared the day that Ricky stopped by her house for their weekly weekend conversation about life updates and such, since the two still remained best friends even after their new jobs dominated their lives. Francesca was adjusting the position of her clock on the wall (the time read 9:14 at night) when she heard a knock on the door. 
The moment Ricky opened the door, Francesca knew that something was up with him. Her instinctive habits of reading people kicked in and she began noting all the signs, connecting them as she went along. Ricky’s top button was unbuttoned and he never left his top unbuttoned unless he was trying to impress somebody, which he didn’t really need to do in order to attract business since he was pretty well known in the criminal world already. So, this meant that he left his top button unbuttoned for somebody who he was not working with, possibly as a means to express subtle romantic interest.
Before Francesca could scrutinize any further details, Ricky made the connections for her when he took off his blazer and excitedly exclaimed, “You won’t believe what happened today! I met the dumbest, but also cutest, detective today when I was working on an assignment somebody gave to me and apparently, somebody else tipped the authorities off about the assignment so C.C. Tinsley was there and he was definitely not the detective to send because first of all, those long legs are totally wasted if he’s just standing around solving cases all the time and second of all, he got really distracted by my flirting and I managed to slip away with the goods before he could notice. He was really cute though, I’m thinking about seeing him again.”
Ricky paused his rambling to catch his breath and Francesca was shocked into utter silence. She hadn’t heard Ricky talk about anybody so passionately ever in their countless years spent together and she seemed to be unable to process the notion that Ricky Goldsworth wasn’t completely emotionless. Maybe Ricky had finally lost his mind after years of trauma from the horrors he witnessed during his assignments; that would be a more reasonable explanation than the suggestion that Ricky might be catching romantic feelings for somebody. 
“I’m going to take your silence as support. I’m going to see him again, and hopefully ask him out, and maybe this can go somewhere,” Ricky concluded before he took out Francesca’s knife-sharpening tools from her cabinet. Normally, Francesca would’ve teasingly rolled her eyes since he always used her knife-sharpening tools, even though he had a perfectly functioning set at home. Instead, she was still so shocked that she just watched Ricky sharpen knives as he hummed happily to himself.

The next time Ricky spoke about C.C.Tinsley, Francesca was just about to go to sleep. It was 1:32 am and frankly, Francesca was more than ready to go to sleep after a long day of staying in disguise for her latest mission. She just finished removing her wig when she received an incoming call from Ricky. Usually, Ricky preferred to stop by to chat so this meant that Ricky either had something urgent to say or something extremely quick. 
Nevertheless, Francesca picked up just in case the case was the former and, just her luck, the case was the latter. Before Francesca could even ask Ricky why he was calling her, Ricky began rambling about C.C. Tinsley.
“Guess what? I talked to him again and convinced him to go out on a date with me! It’s going to be great. But I mean, I obviously maintained my cool and stayed calm but I’m really excited! I know you’re probably planning to sleep right now so sorry for calling you but I just wanted to give you an update! Good night!”
Francesca was very certain that Ricky was either possessed, had too much sugar, or was truly infatuated with this detective for him to sound so energetic at 1:32 in the early morning.
That was not the only instance where Ricky contacted Francesca in the dead of night (or extremely early in the morning). At 3:25 am on a Wednesday night, Francesca woke up since her mission started at 5:30 and she needed two hours in order to get into her disguise. She received a chain of text messages from Ricky about C.C. yet again. This time, it was about how C.C. agreed to finally move up to boyfriend status.
As Francesca put her lipstick on, she read the enthusiastic texts that were all punctuated with several exclamations marks and random keyboard smashes to express the feeling of being overwhelmed with emotions. She was glad that Ricky hadn’t started using emojis to unironically express himself because that would be the most concerning action out of all the actions he did so far. Francesca replies with a few words of encouragement and then told Ricky to sleep and save his love for later.
There were so many more instances where Ricky talked to Francesca about his boyfriend. He invited her to his housewarming party when he and C.C. moved in together at 12:34 am on a Sunday night (technically Monday morning). He also sent her photos from his first vacation with C.C. in some secluded place in the middle of nowhere that had breathtaking views at 7:45 on a Tuesday evening. 
The most memorable one was the most recent one, which was exactly at 2:45 in the early morning when Francesca received a call from Ricky. She predicted that it would be about Tinsley and she picked up, half-awake. “Hey Ricky, what’s up?”
“Fran, I’m getting married! I just proposed to Tinsley and he said yes. Would you like to be my best man? Well, I mean, technically you’d be my best woman and it goes against tradition but screw tradition.”
“Are you kidding me? I’d love to!” Francesca practically squealed, standing up as joy coursed through her veins. “I’m so happy for you! Congratulations!”
This is what led to Francesca standing at the altar, giving a speech about the specific times that Ricky talked about his fiancé and how the clock seemed to play an important role in the evolution of their relationship. She finished her speech and Ricky and C.C. finally got married after years of being in love at exactly 6:19 in the evening on a Sunday. Their relationship was the definition of clockwork and Francesca felt a little emotional at the thought of her being able to see how they decide to write their future.

Chapter 18:
Chaos. That would be the best word to describe what exactly this day consisted of. Lucky for Y/N, she had two very comforting and capable ladies to help her through it all. 
At one point something had gone terribly wrong with the food, something about allergies for a certain kingdom. But luckily Rebecca, Bucky’s sister, got it under control before Y/N had to mess with it. 
Then another time, something about the decorations not working how they planned. Then another with the fireworks that Y/N didn’t even know her father ordered. Then another issue with the guest list possibly not being delivered right, which ended up being a mistake and not true. A nervous new assistant looked over a few things wrong. 
And now, just about 3 hours before the whole ceremony was supposed to take place, there was word that Janet was running behind on the dress. Dear God. The dress. 
Nat was practically hyperventilating because of the supposed rumor, and Y/N and Wanda were fanning her to calm her down. 
“Nat, you know Jay will come through. She’s never let us down.” Y/N said holding her robe in place with her hair still half way done, and taking a break from the makeup artist to calm her friend. 
“B-But the dress. If you aren’t in it for the ceremony, th-then-,” Nat said through breaths. 
“I have never seen her this panicked. Nat doesn’t panic.” Wanda said with worried eyes still fanning her on the other side. 
Y/N shot Wanda a reassuring look before bending on her knees and getting to Nat’s eye level.
“Hey. Jay said she is just a little behind. Nothing to worry about. Want to tell me what the real issue is?” She said placing her hands on Nat’s.
The green eyes shot at her, and Y/N could see the worry and anxiety bouncing around in them. 
“If I remember correctly, this is my day to be nervous and anxious.” Y/N said with a laugh trying to lighten the mood. 
“Yes, but-” Nat paused not sure where to go with the thought. 
“But what? Talk to us.” Wanda said joining Y/N on the lower level. 
The other red head took a deep sigh before closing her eyes. “I just want everything to be perfect for you Y/N/N. You’ve worked so hard for this and everything has to be just right.” she said in almost a defeated tone.
“Oh, Nat.” Y/N said moving closer and squeezing her friends hand. “Nothing is every going to be perfect. Do you know how many bumps we hit along the way to get here? A lot. But that’s what’s making it all the more special.”
“But-”
“No. No but’s. We’ll be fine. Everything will work out how the world intends for it to. If that means a disaster here and there, then so be it. We have yet to not come out on top before. We aren’t going to start now.” Y/N smiled pulling Nat up from her seat. “Now, what do you say we finish my hair and make up so that when the does get here, we are on schedule?”
“What if it isn’t-”
“It will be. I have full faith in Jay. And if not? Then we will be fashionably late to the party. Quite literally.” Y/N giggled pulling Nat in for a hug that she took without a second thought. 
“Awe! I love you guys!” Wanda jumped in excitement before throwing herself into the group hug.
As if in perfect timing, just as they were finishing the last touches of Y/N’s hair, the knock on the door signaled Jay. 
“Hey girls. You ready for the next part of the make over?” she smiled walking in with the dress under wraps. 
“Oh thank God!” Nat said, letting out a sigh as Wanda clapped next to her jumping on the balls of her feet.

“Did you guys get to spend a good chunk of time with each other last night?” Bucky asked as they checked the guards station since the party was just an hour away. People already showing up early. 
“Yeah, we did.”
There was a pause as Buck waited for Steve to continue, but that’s all he said. 
“Ok, and…” he probed nudging his friend. 
“And what Buck? What are you trying to get out of me?” Steve chuckled. 
“I mean nothing specifically, but you’re being quiet. Did something happen?”
Steve looked at his friend knowing he could read him like a book. He rolled his eyes, and tried to ignore it, but Bucky just waited staring at him and making him more uncomfortable. 
“She brought it up again ok! You got me!” Steve groaned throwing his hands up. 
“Steve, why don’t you believe her?”
“What-”
“You would make a great King to the throne. I don’t get how you don’t see that-” Bucky started in a soft tone so that no one would hear.
“That’s not the only issue.” Steve groaned not happy about doing this conversation yet again. 
“Then what?” Bucky said also annoyed at having to try and convince Steve the same thing Y/N was trying to. 
“I don’t know…”
“Clearly you know.” 
“Drop it Buck.”
“No, why are you so freaked out about this?” 
“Buck-”
“I’m not dropping it. Neither will Y/N until you get it through your thick head that you are more of a man than you think you are-”
“I don’t think I’ll ever be enough for her! Ok!” Steve shouted luckily away from everyone making it just them. Bucky stood back shocked, but let out a sigh. 
“So, some other guy is?” Bucky asked making Steve’s dropped head snap up.
“What? No. No guy is good enough-”
“Ok, so wouldn’t you rather you be with her knowing you are giving her your all, or would you want some rando that you know for a fact wouldn’t?” 
“Of course I want it to be me. I would give her the moon and the stars if she asked me to.” Steve said almost offended that Bucky would think he would have it any other way. 
“See? You two were made for each other. Neither of you think you are enough for the other, even if that’s far from the truth, but you try and show each other that you would do anything for the other no matter what.”
“But-”
“Get out of your damn head Steven. She loves you. You love her. She wants you by her side for the rest of her life. If that means as her king, than take the damn position. It’s not that hard.” Bucky rolled his eyes throwing his hands up. 
“What if-”
“No what if’s. Do you love her?”
“Yes.” Steve said without hesitation.
“You would do anything for her? Death included?”
“Of course! Why do you even have to ask?” he shouted again only getting a laugh out of Bucky. 
“Because apparently you can’t get it through your head that she does deserve someone like you. No less, punk.” Bucky said placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder. 
Steve wanted to fight him on it, but he made a good point. If there was anyone that he believed Y/N deserved, it was someone who wanted to treat her like he wanted. As the queen she was. No. The goddess she was. She deserves everything he could offer and so much more. The only person that he knew would strive to give her just that, was him.

“Ok. We are all ready.” Janet said stepping back after making the final adjustments. “Wanda, can you grab me the crown?”
“Yes ma’am.” Wanda nodded going to get it from the case it was in. 
“You look stunning Y/N. Words can’t express how breathtaking you are.” Nat smiled folding her hands in front of her. “You somehow managed to pull of this look better than your coming home party.” 
“I’ll be honest. I didn’t think you would ever be able to top that outfit off Jay, but here we are. Somehow one step up from the last.” Y/N said admiring the details of the dress around her in the mirror. 
“Well my dear, if you could see the visions of dresses I have for you in my head, you would be taken back by how much I can do.” Jay smiled.
“I already am.” Y/N winked. 
“Here we go.” Wanda said bringing the crown to the back of her head. Nat coming to help adjust it to where it needed to be. “Oh, and it goes perfect with the hairstyle Nat did!” Wanda said all giddy. 
“Oh, Jay. This-This is stunning. How did you-?” Y/N said watching the piece come together with the rest of the attire in the mirror as her ladies positioned it just right. 
“You’re secret admirer gave me the idea.” Jay said coming to her side and placing her hands on her shoulders as they admired the work together. “You are everyone’s sunshine even if he claims you as his own.”
Y/N was close to tears. She had a piece of Steve with her through the necklace that still lay on her chest, but the crown was perfect for Steve’s nickname for her. It was all just so… Perfect.
“Now, no crying. You’ll ruin your makeup.” Jay said patting her shoulders before wiping a few stray tears of her own. “We need to get you down there. We are running just on schedule to not be late.”
“Yes, ma’am.” All three girls said trying to push back the tears. Only laughing at each other from the shared emotion. 
“Let’s do this your majesty.” Wanda said extending her arm on one side while Nat did the same on the other. 
“Let’s do this.” Y/N said taking in a deep breath and linking their arms.

“So you’re Prince Summers?” 
Scott turned at the deep voice to see a long haired blonde with deep blue eyes, and another man next to him with black sleek hair and lighter blue eyes. 
“Yes, that would be me.” he said with a smile and straightening his posture. 
“Nice to meet you. I’m Thor and this is my brother Loki. We’re the Princes of Asgard.” Thor said with a friendly smile while Loki gave his signature mischievous one. 
“Right. I’ve heard about you two. Y/N said that you are of one of the top alliances Alberia has.” Scott smiled extending his hand. 
Thor took it seeing that Scott was actually a kind man, but still kept his grip tight showing his dominance. 
“Yes. We’re neighboring kingdoms with Alberia. We grew up and were raised with Princess Y/N.” Thor said never breaking eye contact. 
“We would do anything for her.” Loki added. 
“Well, I’m glad. The Princess is a very special woman, and I’m glad to have made such a friend in her.” Scott said shaking Loki’s hand next. 
“Right.” Loki said with a twerked brow. “Now Scott, you do plan on keeping the agreement with Princess Y/N after this alliance is signed correct?” Loki said not letting go of Scotts hand. 
Scott looked down at the contact and caught onto what was happening. 
“Of course.” he said with only genuine looks. “Y/N said that you two were like her adopted brothers. Always keeping an eye out for her.”
“That or taking an eye out for her.” Thor shrugged his shoulders with the same smile on his lips that was now coming off as intimidating instead. “No one hurts our little Y/N. No one.” he said the last line with his smile gone.
“O-Ok…” Scott said noticing his hand was still being shook by Loki, and the grip was getting tighter. 
“Prince Scott.” A comforting voice said coming from behind the three men. 
They turned at the noise, and once Loki saw Y/N approaching them with a raised eyebrow and a smirk he dropped the hand. Scott bringing it to him and massaging the pain from the grip. 
“I hope that these two brutes are treating you kindly.” she said with her looks directed to Thor and Loki even though she was talking to Scott. 
“Uh, y-yes…” Scott said, but he was distracted by the appearance of Y/N. Just like all the other men in the room were. 
Who wouldn’t be? She was wearing a stunning dress that was mainly red and gold, the colors of Alberia. It had a stunning neckline with details and jewels shining all kinds of different colors. Same for the train of it. Caught in the right light, the mirror like jewels that looked like quails almost gave a rainbow kind of gleam to it from the light reflection.

Her makeup was done simple, but elegant. Her eyeshadow being a metallic gold, her lashes voluminous and bringing attention to the specks of color in her eyes, and her lips stained a dark ruby red. 
To pull it all together, the crown sitting on the back of her head looked like rays of sun sprouting from her. As if each one represented a piece of light that she shined on the kingdom.

She was superior to any other woman. The natural beauty she had was jaw dropping and the three men in front of her couldn’t seem to form a thought let alone a sentence of her presence. 
“You boys are playing nice I hope, right?” She said coming around to stand by Scott, and the men’s eyes followed her. 
“Y-Yes, of course we are.” Loki stuttered out elbowing his brother. “Right brother?”
“Y/N, you look absolutely amazing.” he said not answering Loki.
“Thank you Thor.” she giggled at their wide eyes. “You two look as handsome as ever too. You as well Prince Scott.” she said turning to him, and watching as he shook his head out of his thoughts. 
“Wh-Why, uh,” Scott coughed to try and compose himself. “Why didn’t they announce you? I figured they would announce your entrance so we could get the ceremony started.”
“No one else was announced. Why should I be?” she shrugged placing her hands in front of her and interlocking her fingers. 
“But you’re the whole reason for this ceremony.” he added. 
“As are you. Were you announced?” she said back with a smirk.
“Well, no, but-”
“See? No need to be center of attention from start to finish. Everyone will see us eventually. I mean, we are signing a pretty big contract tonight.” she winked. 
He let out a small laugh as she gave him a friendly smile. 
“Pretty big turn out. It’s crazy actually.” Y/N said looking around. “I guess we should be making our rounds, hmm?”
Scott snapped out of his thoughts once again, and extended his arm. “I guess we probably should.” he smiled. 
“Boy’s I’ll be seeing you at the after party correct?” she said to the brothers who hadn’t taken their eyes off of her. 
“If you mean our friend group staying up late until the sun comes up? Yes. You will see us there.” Loki answered. 
“Perfect. Enjoy the party. King Stark really went all out this time.” she winked before being escorted by Scott through the crowd.

Y/N and Scott made their rounds for about half an hour. Explaining to those that were still lost on the concept of what the whole evening was about, and doing their best not to get annoyed when they were asked about the hundredth time why they just weren’t getting married instead. 
Of course, Y/N’s did her best to hide her snarky remarks when the older groups said that it was just insane and just a young person’s mistake to be making. The Tony Stark in her really wanted to come out, but with a squeeze on the arm from Scott, she bit her tongue. Something Tony never learned how to do. 
Throughout the time, she was trying her best to find Steve, or Bucky and Sam at least, in the crowd. The whole time though, there was no sight of any of the knights that were her friends. Maybe they had some problems with the guards to take care of. 
Then just as her patience was running dangerously low with some of the guest still prodding about the reason for the night, trumpets played calling everyone’s attention to the stage. 
“Ladies and gentleman, King Stark.” the announcer shouted. 
Tony made his way up. Completely decked out in jewels and the best royal cape a king could wear. The crown on his head the biggest and most eye catching one he had. He was really showing off for his country. Why shouldn’t he?
“Wow. A great turn out. Thank you all again for coming tonight, and I hope you’re all a little buzzed for what’s to come. If not, the drinks being passed out are free so I have no idea what you’re doing.” he smirked getting a laugh from the crowd. “Tonight isn’t about me though, like we’re use to. I would like to invite my daughter Princess Y/N Stark, and Prince Scott Summers up here so we can get this ceremony rolling.”
Lucky for Y/N and Scott, they were in the middle and not far from the stage, so it was easy to maneuver once everyone moved out of the way. 
“There they are!” Tony said gesturing to the two, and everyone applauded. 
Once on stage, the two broke apart and waved at the mass of people in front. Y/N keeping her eyes out for Steve still. She found Nat and Wanda  at the foot of the stage, close as always. She saw Morgan, Peter, and Shuri over by the food table talking, but still looking her direction. She saw Thor and Loki were talking to some other princes before turning toward the stage. She saw Peitro and Carol off in the distance, but no Clint, Bucky, Steve, or Sam. All the head knights nowhere in sight. 
“Y/N, I’ll let you explain the events of tonight.” Tony gestured patting her back and walking to stand on the side by Pepper. 
“Right.” she smiled, taking a deep breath and turning to Scott who gave a reassuring smile. “As you all know, tonight is not like most alliance forming type ceremonies. And if you don’t know that, then we have some news for you.” the crowd chuckled, but she saw the older couples/ rulers roll their eyes. “Anyway, I just want to reiterate what exactly is going to be taking place tonight.” She took a deep breath all of a sudden nervous. She was about to do something not many people dare to do because of how out of the ordinary it was. 
But just as her heart stuttered, she looked in the back seeing new people coming in the ballroom. How she saw them, she wasn’t sure but she knew who they were nonetheless. 
Steve, Bucky, and Sam had finally arrived and were walking in watching every move Y/N made. Giant grins on Bucky and Sam’s face. Steve on the other hand had a smile full of pride and admiration. Something he had on the nights on the roof, but somehow about 100000x brighter. 
Like all the air in her lungs had been replaced by Steve’s, and all the nerves had been replaced by his pride, Y/N straightened her shoulders and began her speech. 
“Many of you tonight have asked what the whole deal was. Why I decided to rule without a king arranged to rule by my side.” She sighed putting her hands together. “Because as amazing as Prince Scott here is, I felt as if if I can’t rule my own kingdom without someone's help from the outside, I shouldn't rule at all. But I know I can. I know I can do just that and marriage isn’t going to help me do it. My own brain, my own thoughts, my own strategies and understandings of this kingdom that is my home, is what is going to keep us growing and becoming stronger. I of course have the help and power of the kingdom’s people with me and I’m excited for this journey and the change that is to come.” she smiled getting a few new smiles from those that were hesitant before. “I ask the same thing that I asked the Summer’s family who has been nothing but kind this whole time.” 
She smiled at the family that was on the other side of the stage and returned it. 
“I ask that you all go into this open-minded, understanding, and positive. This is a new way of things for this time, and I believe change is the only thing that is going to keep us persevering and thriving through the future.” She paused finding Steve’s eyes again. The pride somehow still growing. “It’s ok to dive in head first and not know what to expect. It’s ok to be unsure of things. But what we have to understand, is there is no growth in just standing in one spot. We have to move forward and go all in.” 
She smiled seeing what almost looked like a gloss in Steve’s eyes at her words. Without noticing it, she too had the same gloss. 
A few moments passed before Scott put a hand on her shoulder and nodded seeing she needed a second. 
“She stole all the words I could possibly try and explain with, and made it about 1000 times better.” the crowd laughed. “Which is why I know Y/N will do amazing things. I agree completely with the princess. Because of that, I am happy and very excited to be a part of this change.” he smiled at Y/N who gave a soft smile trying to reel her feelings in. “I won’t bore you with a speech from me. Y/N is a hard act to follow, and like I said, I couldn’t have said it better than her. So.” he turned to the crowd grabbing Y/N’s hand and moving her up with him. “Shall we begin the signing?”
The crowd cheered and the couple raised their hands before moving back where advisors and lawyers were bringing the treaty to the families. 
The lawyers went through the agreements that were compromised and to be met with the signing. Taking a good amount of time to explain it out to the crowd.
“Are you all ready?” the head guy asked and motioned to both families. 
Y/N turned to her father seeing any sign of nerves from the past 2 months, completely gone. Instead replaced by how proud he was of his little girl. She was a stunning copy of her mother and in that instant, he was almost 100% sure the he saw her there right in Y/N. In a flash, his daughter was back making him honored to be next to her. 
Y/N gave a nod to her family seeing that Morgan had joined them at some point in her speech. She turned to Scott seeing him smile and offering his hand. 
She took it and they both grabbed a pen ready to sign. 
“Here and here.” 
The two signed where asked a few times here and a few times there. Then. It was done.
“I now pronounce, the Kingdom of Alberia and Turan united in a signed alliance,” the advisors said together as the princess and prince raised their joined hands.

The Best Comics of 2020

It has been a year, hasn’t it?
The year started with such tenuous promise, and is ending the same way: slivers of hope among rivers of misery. But even with all the chaos, all the changes forced by the pandemic and that were coming anyway, we still got some incredible comics in 2020. 
Let us be abundantly clear: every work of art made in the last year is a small miracle. Every comic creator who put irons in the fire in a year that certainly didn’t lack fires deserves gratitude and commendation. Picking 20 comics doesn’t do justice to the herculean work and dedication that everyone who works in comics demonstrated – from the creators, to the back office folks who kept the trains running on time and let us know they were coming, to the people who actually put the books in our hands, we should be immensely grateful to all of them. 
To those creators we say: Thank you for giving us a few minutes on Wednesdays (or Tuesdays) to escape…all this. 
With that said, there really were some excellent books, and we’re very excited to talk about the best comics of 2020.
20. Loneliness of the Long Distance Cartoonist

Adrian Tomine is here to share his sadness with readers and inspire it in anyone who has ever tried to make art and present it to the world. In what might be his greatest work so far, the cartoonist collects his own diary comics about being an artist and trying to release a book.
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Cartoonist is painfully raw, uncomfortably authentic, and impressively hilarious. It takes guts to make yourself the butt of the joke and to do it so well, but there is such heart and humor here that it’ll speak to any reader whether or not you’ve ever had the (mis)fortune to make your own comics or not. 
19. Witch Hat Atelier 
Kamome Shirahama (Writer/Artist)
Speaking of wonderful manga, this series is one of the best books on shelves in any genre, format, or language. It’s hard to overstate how inventive and imaginative Witch Hat Atelier is but for the sake of this list we’ll try.
Kamome Shirahama paints a wonderful world where magic is real but only a select few can use it. Coco is our heroine and when she accidentally learns the secret behind using magic she’s inducted into a witch’s coven and is thrown into a vibrant world of sorcery, spells, and uneasy friendship with her fellow students. 
18. Daredevil
Chip Zdarsky (Writer); Marco Checchetto, Mike Hawthorne, Francesco Mobili, Jorge Fornes (Artists); Marcio Menyz, Mattia Iacono, Nolan Woodard (Colorists); Clayton Cowles (Letterer)
Chip Zdarsky’s Matt Murdock is terrific. His Wilson Fisk is Hall of Fame.
Fisk is attempting to go legit after discovering as Mayor of New York City that there is a much larger pond he could be swimming in. But the big fish in that pond (the Stromwyns – think Marvel’s Koch Brothers) don’t much get along with someone as insignificant as Fisk. What they do to him, and what Fisk does back, is incredible. 
The art on this run has been the real deal. Jorge Fornes and Marco Checchetto have handled the bulk of the pencils this year, and their dramatically divergent styles do a great job of showing the two sides of Murdock’s world – Fornes excels at the quiet investigatory work that Daredevil does, while Checchetto blows the doors off of some monster action set pieces. No lie, Stilt Man has never looked this good. This run is shaping up to be one of the best Daredevil stories of all time, a very high bar to clear.
17. The Department of Truth
James Tynion IV (Writer), Martin Simmonds (Artist)
What happens in a world where all conspiracy theories are actually true? Or that reality actually warps to accommodate new “truths” as they come into being? Such is the premise of The Department of Truth, which delivers on all the unsettling promise of its premise. The fact that it tells its story in a way that aesthetically calls to mind Alan Moore and Bill Sienkiewicz’s 1988 collaboration Shadowplay: The Secret Team, which told some unsavory details about how the CIA conducted some real world foreign policy only adds to the eerie feel.
With more and more people getting internet brain poisoning thanks to wilder and wilder conspiracy theories somehow becoming mainstream every day, The Department of Truth feels like one of the more timely comics of 2020. We only wish it could be a little less timely in some ways, though.
16. The Green Lantern Season Two
Grant Morrison (Writer), Liam Sharp (Artist), Steve Oliff (Colorist), Steve Wands (Letterer)
Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp have been quietly making one of the best superhero comics in decades over at DC, and although we can’t quite believe we’re saying this, it’s about Hal Jordan. The most boring Green Lantern of all has come to life in this trippy, experimental, and beautiful series which transcends space and time, showcasing the best of what Morrrison and Sharp do.
If you think that superhero comics are all the same, The Green Lantern will change your mind (and likely expand it) as Hal adventures through Sharp’s sprawling and stunning cosmos.
15. Immortal Hulk
Al Ewing (Writer); Joe Bennett, Mike Hawthorne, Butch Guice, Nick Pitarra, Javier Rodriguez (Pencilers); Ruy Jose, Belardino Brabo, Mark Morales, Tom Palmer, Marc Deering (Inkers); Paul Mounts, Matt Milla (Colorists); Cory Petit (Letterer)
Over at Marvel, Al Ewing and Joe Bennett have been equally delighting and horrifying readers with this reinvention of Bruce Banner and the hulking hero he becomes. This is about as close to a horror comic as a mainline superhero title can get as the team delve into the multiple manifestations of Hulk and the man behind them.
Just like The Green Lantern, The Immortal Hulk both reconsiders and revisits the lore that has made the character so iconic, and also features an impressive collection of Hulk-centric characters from throughout history. 
14. Shadow of the Batgirl
Sarah Kuhn (Writer), Nicole Goux (Artist)
DC Comics has been doing a great job bringing new visions of some of their best loved characters to the spotlight and Cass Cain got that treatment this year in this gorgeous graphic novel. Taking the one-time Batgirl and teaming her up with Barbara Gordon’s Oracle was a genius move, but the real magic here comes from the sweet natured take on the hero that Sarah Kuhn and Nicole Goux offer up.
Shadow of the Batgirl is a superhero comic with real heart and a look that feels far more like an indie comic than anything coming out of the big two. Just lovely!
13. Hedra
Jesse Lonergan (Writer/Artist)
Hedra is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, and probably the same goes for you. It’s a completely silent comic, but it’s a massively dense, intricate storytelling experience. It’s light and cartoony, but it’s got panels that would look at home in an old Wally Wood comic. It’s got so many panels, and yet it’s full of moments that will take your breath away.
Lonergan manages the pace and flow of the storytelling so well that you have to experience it yourself to fully appreciate it. Hedra is a beautiful, smart, fascinating comic.
12. John Constantine: Hellblazer
Si Spurrier (Writer); Aaron Campbell, Matias Bergara (Artists); Jordie Bellaire (Colorist); Adita Bidakyar (Letterer)
Si Spurrier doesn’t seem like the type who gets mad often, but his John Constantine was fucking pissed, and goddamn if it wasn’t the best Hellblazer comic in decades. This too-brief run of comics starring everyone’s favorite dirtbag street mage was as much about England being a dumpster fire as it was about Constantine being a dumpster fire, and that low-key seethe gave this book an edge that many of Constantine’s more recent exploits have been missing.
Campbell and Bergara are gifted at depicting grimy fantasy, and Bellaire continues to be one of the greatest colorists who ever lived. In a sane, just world, a second volume of John Constantine: Hellblazer is being planned as we speak. Let’s hope.
11. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird (Writers); Esau & Isaac Escorza (Artists); Luis Antonio Delgado (Colorist), Shaun Lee (Letterer)
When we saw a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic called The Last Ronin, we had no idea they meant Frank Miller Ronin. The art on this comic is astounding. 
The story is almost irrelevant, in part because it’s only just getting going (only one oversized issue has been released at the time of this writing). But it’s excellent set up – the last living Ninja Turtle assaults a city controlled by the Foot Clan to try and end their long battle once and for all. It’s set in the future, and heavily influenced by the cyberpunk ninja aesthetic so common to the genre, but filtered through a strong Miller lens that makes it a joy to discover.
10. Captain America: The End
Erik Larsen (Writer/Artist), Dono Sánchez-Almara (Colorist), Joe Caramagna (Letterer)
The superhero comic one shot is an underrated – even lost – art form these days. Annuals are often fill-in stories, and unless Marvel or DC are putting out an oversized issue to herald a line wide relaunch or a similar event, it’s rare that you get a nice thick single issue telling a self contained story of any real “importance.” Fortunately, there’s Captain America: The End.
Marvel’s The End line is exactly what it sounds like: an excuse for creators to tell not-really-in-continuity “final” stories for the biggest Marvel heroes. And while Captain America: The End ostensibly presents itself as the “final” Captain America story, it’s way more fun than that. Erik Larsen uses this opportunity to pay tribute to Cap’s greatest creative periods: specifically Jack Kirby’s two-fisted, acrobatic stint on the character in the 1960s, and his socially conscious and psychedelic late ’70s return to the book.
Wall to wall action, with Kirby-esque idea factory energy and dynamism at the forefront, Captain America: The End is one of the most purely fun superhero issues in years. But don’t mistake this for an exercise in nostalgia, as Larsen blends timely (and timeless) messages that help sum up what made Captain America great in the first place, and why we’ll never truly see the “last” Cap story.
9. Maison Ikkoku
Rumiko Takahashi (Writer/Artist)
We can’t make enough noise about how great Viz has been doing recently at making some of the harder to find manga classics available to bigger audiences. This lovely reprint of Rumiko Takahashi’s joyful slice of life comic technically came out decades ago, but most Western comics fans likely only came to it via this new printing.
Maison Ikkoku follows the misadventures of a young apartment building manager and the tenants that she has to keep in check. In turns sweet, silly, and saucy, this is truly a masterwork of manga that you must read. 
8. Billionaire Island
Mark Russell (Writer), Steve Pugh (Artist), Chris Chuckry (Colorist), Rob Steen (Letterer)
This is not Mark Russell, Steve Pugh, and Chris Chuckry’s first time on our lists, but it’s definitely the angriest they’ve been since showing up on here. If we’re really being fair, it’s entirely deserved. 
Billionaire Island is a wild fantasy story definitely based on nothing in reality about the world’s uber wealthy, who control the world, building their own island to ride out climate change while the poors all die off and suffer on the mainland. It follows a reporter with the Miami Herald, and an ex-mercenary who lost his family to Aggrocorp’s sterility experiments in Angola, as they try and bring down the aforementioned billionaires, are trapped on the island, and work to escape. 
It is every bit as hilarious as you would expect from the team who brought us The Flintstones, but there’s an edge to it that wasn’t there in Russell, Pugh and Chuckry’s earlier work. That’s probably because of the villains – The Flintstones skewered society, while Billionaire Island takes aim at the shittiest people in the world. Several of them by name.
Despite the undercurrent of anger, Billionaire Island is still packed with genuinely hilarious moments. Pugh’s sight gags remain incredible, and the comedic timing on display is outstanding. I had high expectations for Billionaire Island coming into it, and it exceeded all of them.
7. The Magic Fish
Trung Le Nguyen (Writer/Artist)
Feel like crying a lot? Because The Magic Fish got almost everyone we’ve seen read it. It’s an incredibly powerful yet quiet comic about a 13 year old coming to terms with who he is and how to talk with his parents about it. 
Tien, the aforementioned 13 year old, is a first generation Vietnamese-American with a crush on a friend and a mother who is still processing her move to the States and the family she left behind. Much of the story is about Tien trying to figure out how to broach the subject with his mother.
What stands out about The Magic Fish is how Nguyen tells the story. Much of it is is told by retellings of fairy tales – two modifications of the Cinderella story, and one of The Little Mermaid. The colors are especially effective in setting up the mood and tone of the sections of story, elegantly communicating so much about Tien’s emotional and intellectual state. And the fashion and hair are magnificent. Nguyen draws Alan Davis-good hairstyles. 
Nguyen’s The Magic Fish is accessible, deeply moving, and beautiful, a book that should be shared with friends.
6. Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen
Matt Fracion (Writer), Steve Lieber (Artist), Nathan Fairbairn (Colorist), Clayton Cowles (Letterer)
It’s probably good that the prank war issue, where Timmy Olsen stole the wheel off the Batmobile for Youtube clout, was published last December, because otherwise this entire entry would be the Den of Geek reciting bits to each other like this was comics Anchorman. And all that time we’d spend telling each other we sure have created some…content…would distract from the fact that Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen is one of the nicest, most thoughtful, best put-together comics in years. 
Beneath all of the gags – and there are a ton – Fraction, Lieber, Fairbairn, and Cowles put together a deceptively complex character study of Jimmy, Superman and Metropolis. This is a book that is as much about what Jimmy Olsen means to the people of Metropolis as it is about Dex-Starr puking blood on the remnants of Jimmy’s Gorilla City wedding, or the army of Kevins attacking him.
Lieber and Fairbairn were the perfect choices for art on this story: Lieber’s facial expressions and Fairbairn’s bright color palette sell every joke and set every mood that the story requires, and the way the creators play with time and information release is masterful. Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen is essential reading, both because of its importance to the Superman universe as a whole, and because it’s just that damn funny.
5. Once and Future (READER’S CHOICE!)
Kieron Gillen (Writer), Dan Mora (Artist), Tamra Bonvillain (Colorist), Ed Dukeshire (Letterer)
Turns out letting Dan Mora draw his way through an English lit degree is a really good idea.
Joking aside, our readers have excellent taste, naming Once and Future their top pick for comic of the year.
Kieron Gillen takes the “story about a story” formula, smashes several more stories into the first one, and then lets Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain go ham on the whole thing, and the resulting comic is breathlessly exciting, and gorgeous to look at. It remixes Arthurian legend and this year added a sprinkle of Beowulf and developed the magic a little more, while juxtaposing that rich fantasy world with the mundanity of things like a senior living facility.
Mora draws monsters exceptionally well, and Bonvillain gives several scenes an ominous glow that sets a hell of a tone. Once and Future is a great pick by our readers, and is comfortably one of the best books of the year.
4. Dracula, Motherf**ker!
Alex de Campi (Writer/Letterer), Erica Henderson (Artist)
You may not realize that you need a grindhouse ‘70s story about Dracula’s brides being extremely done with his shit, but trust us, you need Dracula, Motherf**ker! in your life.
This book isn’t especially long, nor is it terribly complex. We get a lot of echoes of the original Dracula story updated to a dingy 1970s Los Angeles, and a lot of what you’d expect from a grindhouse horror comic, but it’s done exceptionally well by two incredibly talented storytellers. 
In retrospect, it’s hard to believe this is the first time de Campi and Henderson have ever worked together. Dracula, Motherf**ker! felt a lot like someone discovering peanut butter cups for the first time – there’s that dawning realization as you’re reading that it really works well, and then a secondary shock that nobody had ever done it before.
De Campi is a pro’s pro and a veritable cluster bomb of ideas. Henderson is a gifted sequential artist who gets to show off her mastery of color art as a storytelling device in these pages. The final package is outstanding. 
3. Far Sector
N.K. Jemisin (Writer), Jamal Campbell (Artist), Deron Bennett (Letterer)
The quality level of Far Sector is almost impossible to believe. Jamal Campbell doesn’t have an enormous comics resume, and this is N.K. Jemisin’s debut comic story. And yet the skill evident in every panel screams that this was made by a team of master craftsmen. 
Far Sector is the story of Jo Mullein, a new Green Lantern with an experimental, self-charging ring, dispatched to a floating megacity run jointly by three alien races; the Nah, a group of spacefaring fishtailed/winged bipeds; the keh-Topli, a group of carnivorous plants; and the @at, a race of sentient ethereal memelords. Jo is there at the request of the ruling council to investigate the City Enduring’s first murder in centuries. 
Her investigation is our way into Jemisin and Campbell’s vibrant imaginations.
This is a stunning book to look at – at least once an issue, Campbell draws something completely mind-bending. And Jemisin writes with the easy confidence and command of the form that people who have been writing comics for 50 years can’t match: there isn’t a wasted word on a single page of this entire series. It’s elegantly topical, stunning to look at, and a ton of fun to read. Far Sector is handily one of the greatest Green Lantern stories of all time.
X of Swords

X-Men fans are not commonly known for our penchant for consensus. We can and will argue over everything, from who’s a better partner for Cyclops to which story arc in the ‘90s was actually rock bottom. So when you get near unanimity that X of Swords is the best X-Men crossover since Inferno, you can pretty much take that to the bank. 
The culmination of the first phase of the X-universe’s post House of X/Powers of X plan, X of Swords tied all the mutant comics back together to take on a couple of the biggest ideas dropped in and immediately after HoXPoX. It did something that was nearly impossible: it paid off a year’s worth of stories from ten different series, with satisfying climaxes for more than a handful of storylines. 
It did this in part because several creators are making the jump to superstardom. Larraz somehow managed to do even better work than on House of X, delivering massive beat after massive beat in the final issue of the crossover. Tini Howard spent a year making Excalibur the best book in the line, and wove her plot threads through the crossover she co-shepherded (with Boss X or whatever they’re calling Hickman) to give us a foundational Otherworld and Captain Britain story. All the while, Howard also made sure that this Excalibur-centric crossover paid homage to the first Excalibur series – packing it full of magical silliness and genuine heart. Vita Ayala only got one issue in the crossover, but that issue will go down as one of Storm’s best stories of all time. And Joshua Cassara drew two issues of fights and competitions, and dropped multiple staggering spreads.
The X-Men line as a whole is the best it’s been in decades, and there’s no better proof of that than in X of Swords.
Blue in Green

Fiction is especially tough when the storyteller isn’t up to the subjects. If someone is writing a book about the smartest person in the world, the writer has to be smart enough to believably put brilliance in that character’s mouth. If someone is making a comic about a drug that makes everyone indescribably beautiful, then the art has to be angelic, or the book falls apart. 
But when a creative team IS up to the task, the end result can be sublime. That’s what Ram V, Anand RK and Aditya Bidikar gave us with Blue in Green. A comic about jazz that so perfectly evokes the form of its subject matter that I’m willing to bet this comic is taught in years to come. Blue in Green is incredible comics. 
Blue in Green’s story is broadly familiar: it’s the crossroads tale, where the Devil meets a gifted musician and trades the musician’s life for magnificent talent. Erik is a talented saxophonist with a rough family history who’s pissing away his talents half-heartedly teaching kids how to play. He goes home for his mother’s funeral, makes his deal, and wakes up days later, after a fugue state that included him blowing the doors off of a jazz club with his sax. Eventually, the bill comes due. 
The presentation has a uniquely loose flow to it, moving from rigid grids to collage with prose attached, with surreal, disorienting colors that match the mood of the section of story marvelously. The way the storytelling shifts from section to section, the way the form changes so that it can tell the story as much as the words or art can, is one of the most skillful feats of comics creation I’ve read in years. It’s like its own kind of visual jazz. Blue in Green is an astounding piece of comics storytelling, and I can’t wait to read what’s next from everyone involved.

Tangled: The Series Q&A with Kait.
This is a recapitulation from today’s (September 14, 2019) Questions and Answers session with Kait on the Tangled Discord Server.

Q: Which Disney princesses outside of Tangled the series can you see Varian being friends with? Nonfranchise ones included.
A: I think Belle is the first one who comes to mind!! She’s super studious and goes against the grain…not to mention her father is an inventor who’s a little off-base! 🙂 I think he’d be super comfortable experimenting with Belle and her dad and reading awesome stories! (Maybe even sharing the Tales of Flynn Rider with her! …Assuming she hasn’t read it! Haha. ) He could also eat ham sandwiches with Anna. Sorry. Second thought. Lol!!
Q: So Kait, as a storyboard artist on the show what kind of little details, quirks or creative touches did you or any other artists put into Varian scenes you or others storyboarded?
A: Ha!! Any acting scene with Varian I had…I pretty much based off of Anna Lencioni (my best friend/ another board artist on the show.) Anna makes these very specific expressions and she gestures to herself a lot and closes her eyes and creases her brows and says things like “A-huh! Actually…” or “Um!!” Before making a point and it’s always reminded me of him.
She kept a “flynnolium” prop from Halloween with green goo in a vial in her cubicle at work so long it grew mold. She said she was studying it. She found scrap metal in her boot one day. She has a basement lab for her experiments and crafts. She befriended two raccoons at her last apartment. She is the most accident-prone person with freckles I’ve ever met…she’s pretty much him.
Jeremy Jordan’s reads give you so much to work with…and I love that character so much I feel a natural sort of understanding of how he might say something or do something…but Anna would always do these specifically Anna things that I had to use for Varian.
Q: Do you have any specific advice for aspiring storyboard artists or people who aspire to work in animation?
A: Gestural drawings help you learn to draw fast…which is a very important part of storyboarding. I would say storyboarding‘ s biggest requirements are clarity and speed. Lots of productions have different requirements in terms of what they look for from story artists. Tangled‘s leadership cared a lot about drawing skill, animation, layout, etc. because it more strongly informed the animation studio to have those things. The show I’m working on now (Monsters at Work) is a 3D show…so for our production, the emphasis is more on story and speed. We pitch ideas more than we pitch drawings…so clarity is important and acting is too, but we’re far less precious about tying down drawings and animating since we shift into the 3D production pipeline after story. The boards are still very important…but the more technical aspects are a *little* less so. The focus is just more on story and character and what the board artists can bring to their scenes.
So I’d say just practice drawing…maybe try and give someone a prompt or ask a friend for one. Choose a theme! Maybe vampires? What’s the worst thing that could happen to a vampire? What’s the best thing? What’s the funniest thing? What if they were also an alien? Or fused with a werewolf? Or chained to one? What would happen? Giving yourself a starting point for an idea will inspire you to explore all the possibilities for humor, drama, etc. in that idea. If you’re struggling to give yourself a prompt, try looking online…or maybe choosing a song you like or a passage from a book for inspiration.
There’s also this really fun thing you can do to study cinematography and shot composition called a “three tone” exercise. Basically…put on your favorite (live action) film, grab a sketchbook, grab a black and grey marker, and use the white of the page for your third tone. What you wanna do is (as you’re watching or while pausing) sketch a small thumbnail using only three grey tones of what you see on the screen. Draw the shot- where the characters are, try and duplicate the lighting…it teaches you a lot! 🙂 (Phew!)
Q: Do you have any fun non-spoiler head canons about Varian?
A: I think his favorite dessert is apple pie and I think he bakes recreationally very often! He’s probably a good cook. (Though he may have one or two minor accidents……a burnt thing here and there. Minor oil splatters….haha!!)
Q: What’ve been your favorite episodes, both to storyboard and in general? Of course, no specifics if it’s S3
A: Haha! Well…What The Hair and Queen for A Day have special places in my heart because they were such big moments for my favorite character…(Varian, haha.) But I’d say the episodes I had the most fun boarding are all in season 3!!! Which is exciting! I have to start compiling some work to post! 🙂 I think the episode I had the most fun with is one you guys will really enjoy.
Q: Will we get some interesting surprises (In Season 3)?
A: Without any spoilers- absolutely!! The show is always full of those.
Q: So We’ve heard many fans express why they love Varian as a charcter before, I’d love to know what drew you and Anna to Varian as well and why you guys personally found him to be a great character.
A: When Shane Prigmore originally pitched the character to me, he was much younger. He was like 11 or so, I think? Maybe 12? He’s still pretty young…but what Shane said was that he wanted him to go from this wide-eyed kid to this dark, angry person whose bangs fell over those wide, bright eyes…just full of rage. That idea was super interesting to me…it just hit on something in character development that I felt like I’d never exactly seen before? He was so young and it was such an interesting idea to me to make a child the villain and to give that child a strong reason to be angry? It felt like it was taking this child very seriously, which I appreciate. It felt very real and very dark.
The thing that threw me through a loop but also evolved my fascination with the character was Jeremy Jordan’s casting. I listened to a lot of the auditions they had for various actors and I had seen a ton of Shane’s concept art of the character…a lot of them were VERY different than what we have now. One version Ricky Roxburgh (writer) contributed to had Varian cast as an adult in the story. But when I heard Jeremy I felt like I totally understood who Varian really was.
He was a well-intentioned disaster with unchecked emotions. That. Is me! Haha!! I see myself in his imperfections, his emotionality in spite of his creative and often intellectual thinking. He wants to ascend to these levels he may not be ready to ascend to…he feels this need to prove himself and seek validation. I don’t know, I guess I relate to that! And I’m just a sucker for good guys gone bad. The other half of this, of course, is that he’s very charming and cute and super reminds me of my best friend, Anna Lencioni.
Q: Which character do you most like seeing interacting with Varian?
A: It’s a little spoilery for me to reveal that……..but I think you guys are gonna know when it happens! Haha!
I can’t wait to post THOSE boards
That’s actually right out of the episode I think I liked boarding the most, haha.
Q: If there was one prop (furniture, object, the like) from the Tangled series that could be made real and you could keep, what would it be..?
A: I think it’d have to be those little alchemy orbs that Varian throws? They just suddenly clean the whole castle hallway somehow and like…could use me some of that. He also has the one that removes stains from tablecloths, so. I’m sloppy. That’d be a big help. Haha!
Also his staff is pretty cool 😉, I boarded/created that staff…David Lee (prop designer) did its final design…haha
Q: I have a question about a scene in season 1. When Varian got back the first part of the scroll he mentioned that it took him a while to translate it. Has he really been able to read it or has it been a bluff?
A: Varian can indeed translate what’s on the scroll. 😉
Q: Do you have any networking advice for those trying to get into the animation industry?
A: Post your work!! Make it easily accessible, tag it well, just show what you’ve got online! Upload boards, animatics, drawings, etc. Creating an online presence can really help put your name out there. Apply for internships, jobs. I know it’s hard to network because a lot of industry professionals don’t have time to answer specific questions or give portfolio reviews…so it’s sort of important to take some initiative on that and be self-motivated.
For me, I studied the portfolios of Disney feature story artists, CalArts students, etc. and tried to structure the presentation of my work based on that. Also, it helped me get a sense of what pieces of work would best showcase where I was trying to go and what I was trying to do. I’d ask yourself those questions as you develop a portfolio and artistic voice online! 🙂
My first feature job after a trainee program in New York at Blue Sky happened because Doug Sweetland (Pixar animator, feature director, awesome dude) found my work online and liked it. He just reached out based on that!
Shane Prigmore actually reached out to me for Tangled similarly.
Q: Besides Varian, do you have a favorite character that you’ve boarded?
A: I always love Eugene. He’s the second character I think I’m most like. His acting was really fun to play with and I felt like I could push his expressions a lot because he’s so funny. I loved boarding Lance too (I boarded a lot of Lance in S3!!) but MAN was he hard to draw, haha! His face shape is just really hard to draw at certain angles.
Q: With Varian cosplay that is going on, what Disney character would you like to see Varian dress up as next?
A: Jack Skellington! Halloween is afoot. Jack is another well-intentioned disaster. Guess I have a type!
Q: What’s Varian’s opinion on raccoons, are they his favourite animal?
A: I imagine it’s because Ruddiger is always finding interesting things in the trash and giving them to Varian to use in his experiments. Also, they’re fat and cute.
Q: There’s a bit of an argument going on over how many freckles Varian has. Can you confirm how many he has?
A: Ha!!! Yes…one second… 14!!
Q: How big do you think Corona is? Like Vatican City small or Arendelle big?
A: You know, with the wall and all, it actually feels a little on the smaller side to me? I’m sure there’s a little bit of discrepancy between the movie’s version of Corona and our version…but based on where we went within Corona on the show, I’d say it feels on the smaller side.
Q: Are there any non-spoiler Varian scenes or moments that didn’t make the cut that you can share?
A: MAN. Yes. There is one scene that changed after I rolled off the episode and I’m very sad about it. I’ll post it after the episode airs! There was also a line of Varian’s that I boarded to a specific read from Jeremy Jordan and that read was not chosen in editorial later so…I’ll post that one too, haha!
Q: What is your favourite song from the first two seasons so far?
A: All my favorite songs are in season threeeeee…hahahaha!! I think Let Me Make You Proud or the Buddy Song are my favorites. Buddy Song still gets stuck in my head now and then.
Q: What do you think Varian would order at a drive-thru? Specifically at chipotle 😂
A: Chipotle isn’t a drive thru!! Hahaha He’d get the kid’s quesadilla from chipotle. I think Varian is a fries/chips kind of person…something to snack on while he works! He probably also likes milkshakes.
Q: (Continuation from the question above) Chocolate or vanilla?
A: He’d revolutionize by combining them both. FOR SCIENCE!
Q: What is, in your opinion, the most challenging part of varian’s design to draw?
A: His goggles, hahaha. Or just his…hair in general.
Well it’s funny too because when you board these guys, you get used to doing a shorthand for them and then when you go to draw them FOR REAL you realize how complicated that actually is and how wrong your shorthand actually was? Hahahaha
Q: is Varian ticklish at all?
A: I feel like Varian, Eugene, and Lance are all equally ticklish. To the point of absurdity. Cass would fight it as long as she could…but when it finally got to her, she’d laugh uncontrollably. Rapunzel, she’s the TICKLER.
Q: What do you think Varian opinion and belief on magic is now that he’s seen it with his own eyes?
A: I imagine that he certainly believes in it now and no longer underestimates its powers…but I imagine he’s ultimately more comfortable staying in his own lane and working with worldly properties!
Q: If Varian would have been able to meet Demanitus…how would their conversation had looked like?
A: I feel like Varian would have had a TON of questions about his legendary device and whether or not he truly traveled dimensions.
Q: Did Varian have any other friends in old Corona before he met rapunzel?
A: Probably not many…he’s a bit of a hermit. I think Ruddiger is his best friend……. It’s sad but I also think that’s kind of why it hurt so bad when Rapunzel wasn’t able to help him. Also why he was SO excited to have Rapunzel, Cass, and Eugene come visit.
I think the village looked at Varian as a little unstable or worrisome. I’m sure everyone knew he was very nice…but they were likely very unnerved by his inventions.
Q: Do you think Varian ever tried to synthesise gold or the elixir of life like a real alchemist?
A: I’ve wondered that myself!! I think his alchemy has proven to be more about other people…helping others, making people proud. Maybe if someone he cared about was in need.
Q: If you were to meet Varian in real life, what would you say to him?
A: What elixir did you make to get THAT kind of volume? His hair’s so POOFY! Honestly, I’d probably just give him a hug.
Q: How much does Varian know or remember about his mom?
A: I’d say about as much as the photo of her on the wall.
Q: Is there spoiler about his hair streak? Or is it just by design?
A: It’s totally by design. I think it’s safe to assume it’s probably the result of some lab accident!
Q: In what ways is Jeremy Jordan like Varian?
A: I don’t know Jeremy Jordan personally, haha! But I think a lot of these inflections he adds to Varian sort of off the cuff probably come very naturally to him. I know he often wants to do his own pass at the musical arrangement Alan Menken writes…like he’ll want to do something a little different, in his own way, and it will change the song completely!! In an awesome way. That’s a little Varian-esque. In the “Let Me Make You Proud” reprise…Alan Menken had sung that “they are going to pay…they…will…pay” all in a low, downward tone. Jeremy wanted to scream it and make it powerful and angry and loud when he said “PAY” and you could just hear the spite in his voice for the “they will pay.” Genius!
Q: What was the most shocking moment/revelation of the series to you (minus anything season 3)?
A: It’s hard to say because I knew most of what was going to happen long, long ago. I think one of the things that made me go “oh dang!” was something Tom Canfield boarded. It’s that part in Destinies Collide where Lance slices the entire statue down the middle with a sword. What a BAMF!
Q: What were your thoughts on the early concept of Varian having an apple orchard and being a farm kid instead of a young alchemist?
A: He still kinda has those things! Quirin is a farmer as well as the village leader and there are apples on their little farm estate! 🙂 I think that makes Varian very unassuming as a mad little scientist. I’m sure that’s how (Ruddiger and Varian) met! Remember, he used his purple tacky goo stuff to catch raccoons so they wouldn’t eat the crops! And Ruddiger’s favorite snack is apples. 😉
Q: What is his official height and weight?
A: Smol.
Q: How did you guys come up with Varian’s name? And was there any other name suggestions for him before the name ‘Varian’ was chosen?
A: I’m not sure who came up with that name, actually! I’m sure it has something to do with the meaning of the word “variant” which means something that varies, changes in form.
Q: What’s his last name?
A: His last name!! I have NO idea and it bothers me!!! A Disney magazine referred to Varian, Ruddiger, and Quirin as “The Ruddiger Family” and I still haven’t stopped laughing about that.
Q: What sad Disney movie moments would make him cry?
A: Oof. Lion King.
Q: What musicals do think Varian would enjoy?
A: Little Shop of Horrors! I think he’d see himself in Seymour! Or Wicked…you know, that villain arc.
Q: How did Arianna and Fred meet?
A: I actually don’t know off the top of my head!
Q: Would Varian enjoy rollercoasters?
A: I think he’d enjoy how they’re MADE and then scream his head off while riding one, throw up his cotton candy and corndog, and go play carnival games instead. Then get mad that they’re rigged.
Q: So what comes next for you now that the series is almost over? Any big plans?
A: Well the series wrapped for production a while ago! I’ve been on another show for almost a year now! 🙂 I’m working on the new Disney+ show Monsters at Work as a director! It’s an awesome, awesome show…totally next-level…I’m shocked that I’m getting to be apart of something like this. It’s a direct sequel to the movie that serves as an office comedy (a la The Office, Parks and Rec) and has so many characters that fit immediately into the Monsters Inc world. Monsters Inc is my favorite Pixar movie…so I literally come to work and leave work on the same high! It’s an awesome, awesome show with a great crew! 🙂 It’s also just really exciting to be apart of the first original animated property for D+!
Q: How would you compare working as a director to working as a storyboard artist?
A: It’s hard work, just as hard, but in a different way! For me personally, I’m a little easily fatigued by drawing? I get a little creatively frustrated because my thoughts move quicker than my hand. Or because I don’t always feel like I can execute in a drawing what I’m thinking in the way that I want? Part of that is just being an artist…and it’s not ALL the time that I feel that way…but I think I have a certain stamina for drawing that I found challenging to increase.
Directing is just different! It has a lot more to do with managing a team, communication, coordinating, listening, speaking up, problem-solving, being very aware of story as it applies to ALL parts of a production. I don’t draw as often anymore. You have to consider a lot more…more people, more constraints, more difficulties, more opinions, more solutions…it’s just MORE. And you also still have to draw! 🙂 It’s very busy work, but it’s AMAZING and I love it. I feel like I’m contributing to animated storytelling a lot more in this role, actually. I love working with people, I love workshopping, and I love helping! I’m also just spoiled to be working with some great people right now. It’s a blast.
Q: Are any Tangled: The Series crew joining you on that show?
A: Yes!! Tom Caufield and Wendy Sullivan were on it for a minute, but they’ve both moved on to Dreamworks recently! James Suhr (board artist), Isabelle Gedigk (season 3 board artist), Naomi Hicks and Casey Coffey (revisionists), David Lee (props), Ricky Roxburgh (writer), and I are all working together again! It’s awesome.
Q: Does Varian, deep down, blame himself for the amber?
A: I believe he does.
Q: How do you deal with artist’s block?
A: I try to think about the intention behind what I’m doing. Why is the scene I’m working on very important to the story? If it feels unimportant or boring, how can I make it interesting? What can I do on my end to make it more inspiring or fun without going too far off the rails and still serving the scene’s purpose?
If it’s not work-related, I try and start with some fan art or something familiar for me to draw. I have a lot of scribbly Varians in the margins of a lot of my sketch documents. I use him as a warm-up a lot. It helps build my confidence to draw something familiar/ that I think I can draw pretty well.
Q: What’s the hardest scene you’ve ever had to board?
A: Oh God. ANYTHING with action. I’m not an action gal. Lots of stuff in S3. I was board partners with Wendy Sullivan and ended up getting a lot of action to board even though she’s WAY better at it than me!! It was an interesting challenge…but it was very, very challenging. Ben (Co-EP) was a great mentor to me in the scene I did for the mid season. He was very patient with me, despite my shortcomings as an action board artist, haha. I enjoy boarding for comedy much more.
