so, watched ep 1 of the atla live action and uhm, imagine not wanting one of your main characters to depict sexism because you believe it doesn’t read well in Current Times, so instead you double down on the character’s obsession towards leadership in order to give him that extra edge. but in order to make that work u have to make his sister quietly obedient instead of an outspoken leading presence that has the potential to overshadow him. because silencing a female character in order to write out a male character’s story arc of unlearning sexism is obviously a better and less sexist outcome.

- would probably die the first time he smoked pot, no matter what he smoked it from he will most likely pass out and not wake up for a good few hours

- cannot figure out a pipe like at all he just can't seem to hold it the right way or how long he's supposed to hold his thumb and then inhale he just cannot do it

- his favorite method is probably a bong like power, the bigger the better for him, he probably threw up the first time though from accidentally hitting it too hard 💀

- denji is okay with joints or blunts, but if you ask him to light it he will say he's worried of burning his face off with a lighter that close (fair tbh) so you always have to do it unfortunately

- he is probably clingy when he's high like reze, except he just lays his whole body on top of you, mumbling out incoherent sentences you can't even understand which is mainly just him saying how he loves you

- denji also gets more jealous easily when he's high, if he sees anyone looking at you in the slightest way he will tell them to back off even if they aren't interested in you at all because he can't differentiate the two when he's high

- denji probably got SUPER paranoid the first time he smoked, thinking there was devils when it was just power or just overthinking everything possible

- he probably smokes with you every few days, not every day but quite often even if he does nothing to help contribute the costs like a fucking scavenger

- aki already smokes cigarettes, so he's familiar with the concept of smoking, but smoking pot is a completely different way of smoking than cigarettes to him

- he most likely started out with a joint or blunt, seeing as it's the closest he can get to a cigarette without actual tobacco

- aki also does become more emotional when he's high, he doesn't know or understand why it just happens, he will tear up at certain affectionate actions or when watching a movie and he gets really embarrassed after

- he already smokes cigarettes a lot, so this would be no different pretty much, he probably has one of those cool cases that holds two joints in one that he carries around or mixes them with his cigarettes in the box

makima -

- a blunt girlie there is no doubt about it, she loves all the flavors you can get and actually has a few favorites she really enjoys

- will pay for all of the supplies whenever you need more or just want something new, don't bother trying to pay she will do it anyways

- makima knows how to do o's with the smoke even if it's harder she does it perfectly like 😵‍💫

- on occasion she will use a pipe, though, but she despises bongs and any other method, mainly because bong water gets nasty fast and she doesn't want to bother cleaning it all the time (same ngl)

- everything is super organized and looks like every little thing has it's own place on the tray, she doesn't like when the tray gets a bunch of useless shit on it like stems and roaches from joints she will literally clean the whole thing just to make it look pretty again

- makima does enjoy a edible every once in a while when she's traveling and can't smoke, she usually gets gummies because they hit her faster than normal edibles made by someone else

- she has a roach clip thats probably like iridescent or multicolored or some shit because she likes using that than possibly burning her fingers

- makima doesn't smoke a whole lot, mostly just on her days off and after work but never before work or a business event of some sort, even though she doesn't change much when she is high

reze -

- when i say reze is clingy as hell when she's high i mean literally so fucking clingy 😭 she will be attached to you the whole time, playing with your fingers completely zoning out of everything else

- she probably has a cute little jar she stores the weed in with hearts on it or some shit and her tray is probably some sort of purple galaxy with a lid to cover the contents

- she will smoke out of anything, she doesn't really have a preference she likes all methods of smoking really but she leans towards pipes

- reze is also 10x more emotional when she's high, she could see a puppy on a tv show and would start sobbing uncontrollably leaving you a confused mess trying to help her feel better

- like denji, when she is high enough she will just lay on top of you while hugging you tightly, playing with your hair while ranting about how much she loves you

- she most likely has a collection of custom lighters in a drawer in the bedroom, she specifically likes the old school zipper lighters, probably with cool designs on them like butterflies or something

- reze probably makes really good edibles idk she's the one most likely to know how to bake in my opinion so if you buy the supplies she will make some and it's usually cake so she can decorate it and make it look pretty

- she probably smokes the most out of everyone excluding aki like on a daily she would be high constantly if it weren't for her job, her off days are spent laying in bed smoking and sleeping the whole time which she gets far more cuddly than normal on those days

Idk if you've listened to the new mitski album, but I think it's such a sokka album. There are so many songs on the album that remind me of sokka or sokka and yue like:

heaven and star are such yuekka songs to me or rather yuekka from sokka's perspective where he is both remembering their time together and mourning her death and kinda brings up how her death has fundamentally shaped him forever.

I don't like my mind, the deal and when memories snow makes me think of how exhausting it is to be sokka. All of his many problems that he refuses to (can't) acknowledge and the guilt he feels for those rare times he thinks of not dealing with his many responsibilities.

And finally, I'm your man and I love me after you really make me think of how sokka puts so many people before himself that he is willing to die several times over if it meant the other person's safety. I'm your man especially makes me think of sokka's worship of his dad and how he can't acknowledge that while his father left for the right reasons, it still hurt sokka and katara in very different yet fundamental ways (your father leaving the safety of your sister and entire tribe to twelve year old you will do that).

But yeah it's a good album I think.

yes!! was wondering if/when someone would ask me this lol. i agree that a lot of songs on the album have sokka vibes. i'll go through the album in bullet points (out of order) to elaborate on how i think they fit various characters as i have done with other albums in the past:

"my love mine all mine" is THEE sokka/yue song to me. like the denial of agency/personhood outside of their love which must be hidden and ignored for the sake of duty but cannot be denied!!! and the invocation of the moon is just so potent, of course. if i had time i would make an amv, quite frankly

"star" is such a sokka/yue song from yue's pov specifically she is literally the shining light "burning so you can keep looking up" normally i hate when people compare stars and moons as if they are interchangeable bodies (this is why i cannot enjoy sun & moon dichotomies in poetry i am an insufferable pedant when it comes to astronomy) but i will make an exception in this case because it is just such a beautiful song and really does fit so well.

"buffalo replaced" is such an aang song to me. like not just because of the obvious buffalo (or is it bison?) imagery, but because of the evocation of not being able to catch up to the destructive progress of imperialist nation-building (replacing buffalos with railways, etc.) while simultaneously contrasting it with the liberty and love and freedom of the individual (and that whole verse about how much she loves her cat, that is so real and also so aang) that is so poignant and devastating yet celebratory and warm. maybe that's just my interpretation, but it just feels so aang.

"the frost" is a katara song to me and not just, again, because the imagery is so obviously evocative. there's also some aang themes in the first verse, but the "you're my best friend / now i have no one to tell of how i lost my best friend" lyric really hits because it feels like an address to her mother, but also to sokka. obviously kya was the most important person in katara's life (i assume this is the case for all children with their mothers, i know it's still true for me), but she also lost sokka as a friend when he became her sworn protector. i think katara is grieving the relationship she had with sokka but has no way to communicate it because he's right there, so instead she communicates her grief over kya and rage at the fire nation for taking her family away from her, because it's far easier to verbalize than grief over someone having changed but in a way that seems imperceptible. she calls what sokka does "playing soldier" because the idea that it's just a game to him is far preferable to the chilling alternative that he is prepar[ed/ing] to die. she is losing him in increments and has no one to tell because everyone in her family has either died, left her, or left her emotionally. "it's just witness-less me."

"bug like angel" is a song quite specifically about addiction (alcoholism in particular) but the themes of guilt, regret, and longing do evoke aang and zuko (separately, not as a dynamic) to me. the desire for family, comfort, and for life to revert back to its "original" state before mistakes were made that irreparably altered it (a "sunlit garden" if you will)

"i'm your man" is a sokka song it is also an azula song also a zuko song maybe even an iroh song? it's a song about staking your identity in patriarchal logic especially wrt to one's own father (especially if that father happens to be the leader of a state). it's about the contradictions of patriarchy and selfhood under patriarchy and worshipping at the altar of masculinity even as subsuming its logic destroys you. (will expand on this matter whenever i finally find time to finish my sokka nanami essay. btw)

"i love me after you" is a song that could apply to any number of them but i think it's most poignant if you imagine it as an azula song ("king of all the land" is quite literal, in this case), but also like, a version of azula in the future. it's an azula song someday. eventually.

"when memories snow" is an azula song wrt the line "and if i break could i go on break" and the "thousand hands that clap for me in the dark" but the imagery of memories as snowfall also evokes the black snow that triggers sokka and katara and feels like a metonym for ptsd and trauma. for such a short song, it has a wide range of highly specific applications.

"the deal" can apply to so many characters, as it broadly follows mitski's pattern of existentialist songs such as "abbey" and "door" that can be applied to any range experiences concerning the human condition, BUT, i find it most evocative when considering iroh and his relationship to lu ten and to the spirit world. i'll expand on this more if asked, but for now. just think about it

"i don't like my mind" is such a zuko song especially book 1 zuko who is so obsessively focused on capturing the avatar because he refuses to consider the obvious implications of his situation and is in hardcore denial and avoidance of the blatant truth. he needs this job it is all he has..... please don't take my job from me......

"heaven" IS a sokka/yue song but it's also a sokka/suki song and a mai/ty lee song and really just a universally applicable love song and maybe the most beautiful song ever i dont know. "now i bend like the a willow thinking of you" makes me go crazy every time i hear/think about it probably because i am so othellopilled i think of desdemona and start crying and gnashing my teeth... anyway. on that note!

i'd be happy to expand on any of these, as i recognize that some of my claims were cursory and vague. thank you for asking this and indulging my ramblings :)

6. no literally like she genuinely does not see a problem with it. i feel like in her head she’s like “we saved his life, why wouldn’t he trust us” and literally cannot look past that to see anything else she’s ever done wrong in her entire life. she’s new here, everything that happened in the capitol is “erased” (except for when it conveniences her. ie., having risked her life to save sejanus and coryo and/or using her anger against her father to justify hurting someone else (ash), she said she wanted to kill him, would she tho?)

7. his selfishness has almost no limits imo. he claims he cares about her, which i think is a scary shift for him considering at the beginning she perceived him as her best friend and he considered her someone he merely tolerated (even if that wasn’t fully true). so i think he’s subconsciously clinging onto the idea that he doesn’t need her, but that is slipping from him quickly and he doesn’t know what to do besides convince himself he’d rather she just be gone than see her with someone else.

8. okay, yes. she’s been forced to simultaneously grow up extremely quickly in the need of self-preservation, and i think that is evident in the way she carries herself, and at the SAME time i think her immaturity is what really draws her to a shorter dress. a child’s dress. she wants to go back to naivety in a way, a “fresh start” where she gets to reclaim the childhood she missed out on back home while the country was in a war and she spent her nights sleeping in a bunker instead of her bedroom littered with toys and typical objects found in a kids room. but ALSO she still does feel the need to be protected. at this point specifically, she’s thriving on the idea that coryo would hurt for her (he had seen him to just that at the hob bc she was only dancing with someone) and wants to weaponize that to her own benefit. idk i could go on ab this for hours.

YESSS SO this concept of them having similar thought processes and impulses and actions is SO important to me, because i think that’s the only way things could ever work out for them. they have a lot in common and they always have- the only real difference being that coryo is practiced in subtlety and class, hiding his hunger and his struggles while she makes her problems everyone else’s too. other than that, they really aren’t much different. (almost like… they’re on a level playing field with different strengths and weaknesses that perfectly balance each other out)

YES okay so security (however painful it may have been) is 100% the only thing she’s used to in life (up until the mentorship and the games). so much so that coryo even says at the very beginning that the tantrum was so in character for her and arachne said she had to “be sedated again”, so obviously this childish act of defiance is an integral part of her character (as she is perceived by her classmates and authority figures), but only outside of her home. at school, she’s not afraid of any consequence because she has this blackmail and her fathers money as a constant security blanket making her essentially untouchable. this, quite literally, is all she has ever had outside of her implied friendship with coryo, who is the only one of her peers who can really stand her. so going into this completely different world, the change of pace provides a high, in a sense, but she chooses the only bit of security she has left, her best friend, over that unfamiliar freedom every time. i feel like she needs him to feel safe, no matter how “free” she allegedly is.

I know this wasn't the point of the Wanda post but I feel like this should be said: Introducing things from the movies into the comics is not always a bad thing like how Blade wasn't half vampire until after the film trilogy and everything that happened with comic 616 Nick Fury. But I could be wrong and those are actually terrible examples.

I agree with you! I don't think adaptations and new concepts are bad, but it really depends on every circumstance.

On the other hand, some concepts are super welcome, like what they did with the Eternals, making most of their personalities waaaay more interesting (I suppose my only exception is Sersi. Comics!Sersi is/was so full of sass and I missed that. But Ikaris? Makkari? Druig? *chef's kiss*)

Nick Fury, imo, is a very unique concept because he only exists thanks to the Ultimates artist who used Samuel L. Jackson for his design. The actor saw that and wanted to be part of the MCU, which turned him into a very popular character, leading Ult!Fury to the 616, while 616!Fury is currently *whatever happened to him in Slott's FF run idrc* (correct me if I'm wrong on this, I read that info a long time ago)

Oh, and I can't say much about Blade because I'm just starting to read his chronology. But I think it's cool that he's a daywalker, as far as I know.

In short, it's okay if the movies introduce something cool to the character.

But back to Wanda... (and I know you didn't mention her, this is just me ranting, so please feel free to ignore that part, I'm just seizing this opportunity)

Nothing about her MCU characterization added good things to her comic book version. She was whitewashed, worked for Hydra, had a terrible storyline about grief and mental health (tipically stereotyped and twice as problematic since she's a woman) and finally had the "woman goes crazy with power" trope. She was never able to control her powers (as seen in Civil War) and let her emotions warp reality to fit her fantasies while being manipulated by both people and her own emotions (again, women are often called overly emotional, and I'm not excusing Bendis here because he did the same in comics). She became a villain during HoM and the times she was possessed by Chthon, but she was never meant to be *THAT* scary and evil. There's altruism in her essence (this is why the narrative of killing a teenager is just so off to me).

Wanda is a brown romani woman who was often persecuted due to her ethnicity, religion and skin color, as well as her mutant genes. And yes, the many reboots that tried to erase her identity. Even in modern day, she still has to deal with ill-intended writers who ignored the implications of her character as a hero of color and the double effort she has to perform in order to be accepted as an Avenger, (former) mutant and overall hero. Not only that, the fans have to BEG to artists to make sure she isn't whitewashed, while 0ls3n stans will mock and diminish those who ask for representation.

This is why it's so problematic for Wanda to be like that. Her entire characterization is made to please a toxic fanbase and use her as a symbol to promote their racism (as seen on my previous post).

In short, they don't like Wanda. They just idolize 0ls3n because she's white and plays a derranged woman filled with power. And that's kinda enough for them.

Don't get me wrong, I do love my fair share of female villains (I'm literally in 300 different fandoms). But Wanda was not meant to be that, especially knowing that there are so few female heroes of color on screen (it gets even worse when we only count phase 1, 2 and 3).

In any case, my point is, fans cannot accept the influence of MCU!Wanda to be translated to comics because it's erasure of her identity and plain racism. The new team is working very hard to portray a woman of color as she was supposed to be ever since her roma heritage was established in comics, and it's infuriating that people will turn a blind eye to all that.

Like, this kind of shit keeps happening over and over.

Even when Wanda is a brown woman like she's supposed to be, they still find a way to erase her through 0ls3n's whiteness. This is not different from those derranged people who pick white actors and photoshop them over Black Panther's characters (I've seen one just yesterday).

Sure many minorities were poorly portrayed back then, often depicting problematic characterizations, but here's an excellent case of how comic books allow room for growth (I was talking about HP and JK but it also fits this post)

Agatha was just the last bit of bad influence from that accursed TV show. She was deaged, which is absurdly ageist. There are so many few elderly and middle-aged women in the Marvel universe. There's less now because women can't be old (ask me about the anons that stated Charlize was too old to play Clea and watch me burn in rage).

Anyways, I wanted to make this about Wanda again because it's not just a case of bad adaptation. It's a political statement -- and a bad one. And I don't want ANY OF THAT in a media that is so political and means so much to minorities. I feel like it's important for us to talk about this ALWAYS. So yeah. I don't know how to end this post. Chapter 11 of Gideon the Ninth

Gideon really does not know how to say no to attractive women, does she? I'm still on the fence about whether or not Corona is going to turn out to be evil too, but Muir did almost literally name her "Cain", so I guess that settles that

There's actually something interesting here (to me, anyway), because although Gideon just cannot shut up about Corona being hot the entire chapter, except during the swordfight, there's something different about how this is portrayed here, that I don't really see much, or maybe at all? Forgive me, I've just been thinking a lot lately about attraction, and how you write it, because it's a day that ends in y and I have a story that's trying to be written and I keep going back to my Homestuck-fanfic-writing experience, and yeah

Normally when I see stuff like this, it's more explicitly sexual, or more explicitly romantic, there are references to things like people's bodies, to physiological reactions like butterflies, or being warm, or what have you, and I can't relate, depending on where exactly it falls on the sexual/romantic spectrum I come away with something in the range between "that sounds like an interesting experience, let me try to imagine it" and "rolling my eyes real hard right now" and "people like stuff like that? how curious, I must take notes", but this here, and also with Dulcinea in the last chapter, doesn't seem to fall into this category at all, it's all very aesthetic, about the general picture/vibes the person gives off, about the sound of their voice, about smiles and laughter, and so I can say, yes, I feel you, I get this experience you're having. I don't think it's a male gaze thing, because I see the same stuff happening in the female-dominated fanfiction world (most of the time there, actually, although certainly not exclusively), and I also really don't think it's intended to be an ace thing, because I'm pretty sure that no one in this book is intended to be ace, least of all Gideon. I don't know, though, maybe this will change later and it will become the same old same old. I noticed this today, because immediately after I finished reading the chapter, I checked my email and there was an AO3 notification for a fanfic I'm following, and I went and read the latest chapter, and the difference was stark

I note now that Corona initially said she had organized matches for all the cavaliers, but having reached the end of the chapter, I see that we are missing the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth cavaliers, but Corona did not go off in search of them. Of those we've so far only met Protesilaus, and the Sixth and the Eighth have not yet appeared as named characters, although by process of elimination we can conclude that one of them must be the guy with the missing middle finger who appeared with knife-face earlier

I do feel for Jeannemary, she's only just arrived at Lyctor Camp and already her (not) dad is going around telling everyone embarrassing stories about things she did as a toddler, if this is the kind of thing Harrow was afraid of, I guess I can see why

So, thanks to dracula daily, I watched Bram Stoker's Dracula (the title is a fucking lie). Spoiler warning for that, and also, well, for my rambling.

I just really need to talk about it, this is no analysis or rating or anything, really just me talking.

The beginning is promising. I really liked the colours and all, even if Drac was hard to understand. But that part was pretty neat.

The story begin was surprisingly accurate. Like, they even read parts from Johnathan's journal! Not sure if it's directly from the book, but that was a nice detail. A couple scenes in the castle were confusing and, uh, weird, but mostly it was accurate! We even got Dracula's lizard fashion!

And the brides- now I get what that one post said about vampire titties. Oh my goodness why are they half naked. I know vampires are like all sex and the stigma around it and shit but why so much.

Then there was Mina and Lucy and....... I know the whole "sex bad! the protags are good bc they are so pure!" kinda sucks but. idk. she just doesn't feel like Lucy, At All. BUT Jack's entrance was neat.

I also liked that they gave Renfield a backstory as the first guy to go to Dracula.

The Demeter had so much missed horror potential... well, you can't have everything.

Okay but WHAT THE FUCK was up with that werewolf dracula thing?? Seriously what the Fuck dude. What The Fuck. Also... the whole fucking thing. Like, literally. Why did our bitten girls try to get out their boobs. Why. Like, c'mon, yeah vampires sexy we got it, but the Number 1 Symptom being "Boobs Out" is, uh. yeah.

Okay, but they kept the "Jack, the woman you loved is dead. I want to cut off her head and take out her heart" which is literally sooo funny I love that.

The final scene at the castle with dracula is......... I am. Not A Fan. I mean, she got to kill him, which is neat, but she did it bc she loved him, which sucks. Also Quincey my boy........ aurgh.

Was it a good film in itself? Yeah, I guess so. Too much boobs and sexy stuff for my taste, but it was a good film. Well made, no unnecessary blockbuster shit, the setup and all was really neat.

Was it a good Dracula adaptation? Hell nah. Inspired by the book? Okay. Based on the book? Questionable. "Bram Stoker's Dracula"? Honey you couldn't get further from Stoker. The heart of the book are the characters. It's Johnmina's love, it's the polycule, it's everyone hating Drac So Much for what he did to Lucy and Mina... and that just isn't in the film. I have literally no opinion on the characters except Lucy because I just cannot see LUCY in her, and Mina because what is going on with you girl, and that's just sad. Dracula wasn't really likeable, but you didn't hate him, either, which in itself says that you kinda missed the point of the book.

Also the type of horror was entirely different. Like, in here? Dracula was A Guy. A scary, powerful, undead, monster guy, but still a tangible person.

In the book, it's this unknown thing in the background. You don't know what he does, why, where he is, what he thinks. You think you meet him in the beginning, but then he's gone. He's the unknown horror, you think you're safe and suddenly he's There, only to disappear again and you know you can never be safe until he's truly dead, but how? How can you kill this monster that doesn't seem to be like any human At All?

It was a good film. It just wasn't a good dracula adaptation. I kinda liked watching it, but I didn't need to watch it either, and I definitely won't again. I'd rather reread the book.

pile up bodies outside the city wall

tried to give most of the country a painful, fatal illness

max: he looks okayish? it's not a max vibe but it looks better than it does on takao and ESPECIALLY rei

The fact that strahdphelia moments keep being disguised as ireelia moments is personally driving me insane. I don’t have all the lore of this campaign obvs but it keeps making me think like. You love this one girl through every life you have and sometimes you love someone else too but one time that other person turned(?)/killed(?) you and now you’re alone and scared. And now someone who isn’t that first-and-always person wants to love you too and you don’t fully understand why you’re so reluctant until memories of the past other love who hurt you keep literally asserting themselves over the potential new love. Hurt and agony and pain.

I MEAN ITS SO MUCH. strahd keeps using ireena and luce against ophelia. like the different dynamics at play are so much

strahd and ireena obviously are so complicated because tatyana and the fact that the Curse of Strahd™️ is never being able to be with her lol but also WHY strahd cannot be with her is because strahd can never change

strahd is ophelia's first love In A Way, the first person she ever fell in love with in any of her lives, and ophelia's the only other time strahd's made like. an effort for 'true love' other than tatyana/ireena, except because of her own insecurity she refuses to acknowledge she controlled the relationship and used ophelia's insecurities in really manipulative and harmful ways. it was good until it wasn't. one of the things that like. REALLY DOES KILL ME is that ophelia and strahd met because they had a Genuine connection and a genuine shared interest and love for music.

and ophelia and luce have been running into each other since their first lifetimes ever, not always falling in love, not in every single life, but each time they do, they change each other for the better. and in a way, Luce is Ophelia's first love in THIS life and now she's trying to figure out how to cope with meeting the current reincarnation of the girl she grew up and fell in love with who is currently dating the person that murdered her!!!

ireena and ophelia who are similar in a lot of ways but also different and falling in love because of the gentleness they see in each other and something about the experience of being alone and wanting someone who in some way, might understand, but also then ophelia being unable to bring herself to tell ireena things because she's afraid of what would happen (just like she was afraid to tell luce she loved her). it's about the choosing to love someone who will see you as who you want to be...

THEN LUCE AND STRAHD where luce is just too stubborn and optimistic to realize she's being manipulated and is only going to hit the point where she realizes. She can't change everyone. She can't save everyone, and at some point she needs to save herself.

so yes they make me insane and the thing is like. what it comes down to is like. ophelia is going to love strahd the entire rest of the campaign, i know this, just from who she is as a character i built, someone so deeply loving and so desperate to be loved simultaneously, that like, i know she needs to kill strahd, that's the goal of curse of strahd, but it's not going to be easy for her, it's not going to make her happy, but it's the only act of love she has left that she can give to strahd by the end.

HOWEVER maybe it is nostalgia talking but i remember the 1st one looking absolutely incredible but this one... i think a marvel film looks similar now. like there were some scenes that were obviously showing off and better than anything else, buuuut it wasnt the whole thing. i did see it in 3d and i did get a headache during but i cannot tell if it was the film or just my fucked up reactions to barometric pressure.
