I’ve come to the conclusion that there two ways people in danmei get into martial arts
A. High-born person who learns it from a young age and becomes obsessed with it
B. Low-born(or made lower class due to circumstances) person who picks it up for the sake of raising their social status and/or become powerful to compensate
Quan Yizhen is somehow both of these and neither at the same time

Look man I don't care if canon proves me wrong but I will strongly headcanon the former Qing Jing Peak lord was a caring but strict (more cold and strict than caring hoenstly) woman who gave Shen Jiu | Shen Qingqiu a small taste of what it's like to have a familiar bond with someone.

quick prompt
Shen Yuan transmigrates as Yue Qingyuan.
So he wakes up thinks fuck this shit, and decides to gather evidence that Shen Qingqiu is a scumbag and also thinking of ways to improve the protagonists life.
He has a system that stops him from directing helping Luo Binghe which makes him rage out but realises that he just doesnt HAVE to walk into the trap and get killed by thousands of arrows either way he ends up going through paper work trying to find evidence and break his ooc feature and decides to clean house.
So he finds out the entire cang qiong sect, the other martial siblings that were whispering poison that Shen Qingqiu is no good, is crooked, scum, worst of the worst etc. Have ALSO done some fucked up stuff.
Yue Qingyuan has let nearly everyone get away with murder! In a bid to throw Shen Qingqiu under the bus only- ended up revealing everyones dirty secrets.
Secrets that the system tells him he should investigate. So he holds a meeting and talks about how after losing his memory realises he's been too relaxed with certain siblings and their behaviour and finds it unnaccaptable. He brings up the siblings in question...
Shen Qingqiu, Mu QIngfan and Shang Qinghua.
He uses those ones first as they're the LEAST worst but almost there. Both Shang QInghua and Shen Qingqiu have been spending an abundant sums of money both summurise that its from their own pockets and savings and nothings been taken from cang qiongs treasury.
Shang has been ordering a quantity of paper and ink [for his writing] and Shen Qingqiu to his brothel visits, here Yue Qingyuan circles all the peak lords chairs as he speaks about following Shen Qingqiu and uses a tailsman to disguise himself then reveals that he wanted to see Shen Qingqiu red handed only to find time and again his shidi only went there to sleep. That the time spent was innocent. He reveals letters he asked the women to write and even payed then three times the amount Shen Qingqiu payed to reveal the truth.
"Now here," he spoke "The women could lie, and claim Shen Qingqiu is the worst sort and a degenerate even though I offered to pay for their services in the future that would let them be very comfortable." And even convert their establishment into a high luxary tea house instead.
"And yet here is what they wrote." He read them outloud of all the praise and eveything Shen Qingqiu had done, even letters from children and how he would book the entire inn so the children can sit with their parents as they relaxed.
"That Peak lord is utter scum, he should be banned from this estlablisment if this one ever saw the face of that man ever again I will have no choice but to tear his face off, damn that Xiao Qingwen oh, my mistake that wasn't about Shen Qingqiu." But he glared at the other martial sibling.
"That must be a mistake-"
"And yet if the Qing Jing Peak lord was accused there would be no mistakes." Yue Qingyuan glanced back at the letter and sneered "This is appaling, you are herby thorth banned from any brothels and sent to the Lingxi caves and reflect on yourself." Yue Qingyuan felt gross but felt more annoyed at the obvious projection of his martial siblings.
What was he? Some husband in a harem drama? Why was everyone here spitting and hissing like cats towards Shen Qingqiu who felt like the unfavoured wife? hah?
"And of course the Peak Lord from Qing Jing Peak is also banned from the Red pavillion." Shen Qingqiu glared his way.
"Excuse me sect leader? You may find this master can go where ever he pleases!"
Yue Qingyuan only gave him a dry look "Not when it reflects badly on Cang Qiong Mountain, you are a peak lord. Act like it and use a tailsman like any other cultivator." He rolled his eyes and noticed Shen Qingqiu relax when he realised that the Peak lord was banned, not him himself.
"And Mu Qingfan, these herbs...are not very legal. Do you have a valid excuse for these?" or any excuse in case the Sect leader needs to explain why Mu Qingfan is growing weed in his back garden.
Mu Qingfan explains he's a doctor and is expected to treat any illnesses, most cures come from those exotic plants.
Yue Qingyuan sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose "Still, I need a warrent at least, something legal on paper so it doesn't affect us in the long term. No one cares if you save lifes as long as you follow the rules." Annoying yes, but it had to be done.
"Speaking of illegal contraband." Shen Yuan glared at Qi Qingqi and saw her sweat, both she and Liu Qingge were the loudest to cause this meeting to expose Shen Qingqiu and punish him.
Oh, funny now that its THEM in the hole.
"These...what would you call it literature?" She tensed further "Yes?"
"Is there any reason you seem to have them? If it came out that Cang Qiong mountain had any copies of those books..."
She pursed her lips "This one was only curious, and none of this Masters disciples have read them." Yue Qingyuans eyes narrowed.
To think Qi Qingqi was holding kama sutra but the cultivation type, that would land all of them in trouble if it came out that they owned one!
Yue Qingyuan could see his chances of survivng dwindling before his very eyes- is that wha the original goods did? Acted like a ostrich and buried his head in the sand!?
Shen Yuan can't do that! But in a move that was supposed to expose Shen Qingqiu ended up revealing the guy was actually more complex than he thought and was weirdly innocent!
---
So in short, Yue Qingyuan is trying to throw Shen Qingqiu under the bus and betray him but ends up seeing him. Even Shen Qingqiu see's how Yue Qingyuan finally did something and helped instead of assuming he was guilty and trying to salvage and smile away the problem. But now he misses his Qi-gi and can't help but feel as if he's lost something important that he wont get back. He'll never know why Qi-gi abandoned him.
But isn't this what he wanted? To start over?
---------
Even more thoughts.
This story will split into two alternative endings. One good ending where Yue Qingyuan [aka Shen Yuan] ends up being a house husband to Shen Qingqiu and finds that being stepped on by the scum villain isnt that bad.
Or the bad ending, where he gains Luo Binghes attention by giving him a better cultivation manual but plays it off as the sect that deals with stratergy its survival of the thickest as the other secs act friendly but can strike them if their perceieved as weak, while Yue Qingyuan is trying to avoid cang qiongs destruction ends up gaining LBh attention and has to sacrifice himself to be Luo Binghes play thing and manage his obsession.
There is a cross roads decision, to choose to help Shen Qingqiu or Luo Binghe, in the event he misses Luo Binghe by being alone comes across Ming fan who is also going through trials Ming fan mentions they have fake goods so others will destory the decoys so their real treasure is protected when LBH admits that WAs his treasure, Ming fan cuffs him on the head calls him stupid but ends up finding it and returning it. Ming fan doesnt change but from a new perspective of survival gains LBH respect and both start to open themselves up. MF gains LBHs attention instead of Yue Qingyuan and is able to manage his obsession.
So, in good ending, Shen Yuan has to do missions for the system. His pathways and dialouge options are blocked unless he snoops around and gains items, etc to unlock them as well as talking to others about himself and his lost memory.
But when he unlocks the core memory of his past slowly but surely Yue Qingyuan is a wreck as he feels the emotions and has to work even harder.
Because if he tells SQQ the truth his system will punish him, he has to earn that 'speical ending' and in doing so finds himself wanting to save Shen Qingqiu with the same intesity as the original. So he tries to plant the mushroom he cant tell SQQ what he knows which makes it harder, but he manages.
In on stroke of luck of earning just enough b-points and making sure Shen Qingqiu was in a good mood Yue Qingyuan had unlocked the event he just had to say it.
The original would've balked, and Shen Yuan with his thin face would've ran away too. But the sight of Shen Qingqiu as a human stick made him stay seated and pour the truth of why Qi-ge failed to come back to his Shidi and 'left' him behind.
And bad end with LBH? Yue Qingqyuan is just chained to LBH's bed, as a trophy wife so much smut idk very kinky, Yue Qingyuan is huge and LBH is tiny like a twink and he likes the size difference, also Yue Qingyuans 'cultivation' is not great a one hit wonder so to say.
So bedroom performance apart, Yue Qingyuan actually manages to fight for his place in the harem as the main empress, the only one strong enough to beat up Binghe, and even manages his kingdom.
"We are NOT merging the realms." "But shifu the paperwork-"
"Shut up. I'll deal with it then!"
They're like an old married couple, but LBH is jealous and keeps dangling his precious Xiao Jiu over his head if Yue Qingyuan doesnt co-operate or play his game 'just' right.
Yue Qingqyuan cannot relax feeling as if he's about to be devoured any second that this peace is only here unless he makes a mistake, its temporary and fragile and Yue Qingyuan cant relax for a second.

OK so there are two ways i could go with shen anyuan’s path in protecting shen jiu, both of witch are something i really want. shen jiu burns down the qiu manor under the influence of wu yanzi (who essentially drugged and coerced him into ignoring reason, its like a whole Thing), and this is where it branches, ig?
anyuan attacks and kills wu yanzi when he tries to touch shen jiu, who still dazed by shock and mindlessly watching the flames of the qiu house dance. anyuan takes shen jiu and they then make their way to cang qiong. jiu arrives earlier to cang qiong and gets a. better start to his cultivation bc of this.
the qiu manor burnes down three months earlier when wu yanzi tries to kill anyuan to eat his heart and boost his own cultivation. the culmination of negative emotion causes and abyss rift to form and swallow the qiu manor and everyone inside. qiu haitang and the three servants with her are the only survivors, as they were in town when it happened. bc of this shen yuan has to guide shen jiu in his cultivation to survive, and while it does work, shen jiu slowly takes on more draconic features. he wont be completely dragon, but claws, scales, and bright green eyes. its like the "[insert non-human] can cultivate a human form" but reversed.
as a continuation of 2, anyuan and jiu essentially have to live in the endless abyss until shen anyuan starts experimenting with seals, combining ideas from different web novels and stories to create written spells. they are eventually able to escape during the immortal conference where yue qingyuan meets shen jiu and kills wu yanzi in canon. instead, yqy thinks sy is trying to attacking shen jiu and so tries to kill shen anyuan, enraging shen jiu. jiu stabs yqy and gives him a permanent scar under his eye. they stop and talk, and shen jiu is accepted into cang qiong.
yqy is def jealous of sy, but sy is just like "quit staring at me you weirdo, gods, fucking leave"
shen jiu is accepted onto qing jing, and it becomes an open secret that he did in fact sneak a dragon onto the peak as well, but no one on the peak talk about it. Cai Lingfei, the current peak lord of qing jing finds this fucking hilarious and doesn't even try to stop it, feigning ignorance despite having tea with sy every week.

Liushen AU where SY transmigrates into SJ's older brother, and subsequently nopes them right out of the slavery backstory by using his general knowledge of the story and actually being an adult in a kid's body to just leave (basically) with SJ and YQ.
SY carts them both up to Cang Qiong for the next sect trials. It's actually not all that hard, the trickiest part is getting enough to eat and finding safe places to sleep between leaving the slavers and taking the trials (SY manages just barely, with considerable help from his new little brothers.) Nobody bothers to go after them because it's before Qiu Jianluo and this style of human traffickers mostly operate by virtue of their merchandise having nowhere else to go. Chasing down runaways is an expense not worth indulging, given that most of them either come straight back or die of exposure.
Anyway, they take the trials, and as expected YQY gets chosen to become a personal disciple for the sect leader, and SJ gets chosen by the Qing Jing Peak Lord, but also as (kind of) expected (by SY alone) nobody wants SY. He's older the Yue Qi, so too old, and unlike YQ and SJ his cultivation potential isn't striking enough to make any exceptions for him.
SY, however, can't leave it at that. He's spent more than five minutes with the street kid codependency gang, so he's gotten attached to both of them. And he knows what will happen if they're left to their own devices and The Plot proceeds accordingly. (Also, they keep threatening to not stay at the sect if SY doesn't stay too, for some reason.) So with a heavy heart and internal candle lit for himself, SY heads to Bai Zhan Peak. Which is the only peak that accepts disciples by way of them turning up and refusing to leave.
SY's not much of a fighter. He actually really hates the atmosphere on BZP, he's not bad at physical cultivation (his health's pretty good in this life, ironic considering how much worse his situation was) but the random ambushes and survival-of-the-fittest stuff is just not his brand. But that's okay, because it turns out that BZP actually DESPERATELY needs disciples on the actual peak who are interested in things other than fighting and cultivating their own strength. Stuff like, filling out requisition requests for An Ding every time things break, apologizing to An Ding every time things break again, organizing schedules, browbeating senior disciples into actually teaching, educating disciples on virtually any artistic or social skill, hosting lectures on how to beat vicious beasts without just overpowering them, and etc.
Okay so some of this stuff isn't and has never actually been on Bai Zhan's curriculum but Shen Yuan is going to make this place tolerable. And stop these children from needlessly getting acid burns or lyme disease or scurvy or whatever. He keeps internally chewing out Airplane for designing a sect system that means there are a lot of largely unsupervised 12-year-olds running around the wilderness on a mountain picking fights all the time. (When he actually meets Shang Qinghua and figures him out he switches to doing it in person, of course, in twice-monthly bitching sessions that look a lot like budding friendship.)
Of course one of the worst offenders is the Liu kid, who SY would suspect was actually raised by wolves if he didn't know for a fact that Liu Qingge has a younger sister, and also the kinds of nice clothing and letters from home that strongly imply not only does he have a family, but that the family is pretty well-off. Liu Qingge is at first deeply offended by SY being a BZP disciple. He rarely fights anyone, and uses tricks and evasion tactics whenever a fight can't be avoided. And he does other annoying stuff, like pestering him about meals and baths and lecturing him on identifying dangerous plants and the early signs of qi deviation. This is not what their peak is about! He should get with the program already! Just fight stuff until you're too tired to keep fighting stuff!
Also SY's younger brother, SJ, is pure evil (at least according to baby Liu Qingge) even though his other younger brother (?) is cool and nice.
Anyway, Liu Qingge stops complaining about SY after their first mission together, where Liu Qingge doesn't lose a fight but does get into a kind of pyrrhic victory situation where he's really badly hurt, and it's SY who helps him win (correctly identifying the monster and then pointing out its weakness) and takes care of him afterwards and gets him safely back to Cang Qiong. SY expresses surprise at LQG actually being polite to him, and LQG realizes that he's been a colossal ass if people think he wouldn't be grateful to someone who saved his life, so the usual Liushen dynamic proceeds from there. Liu Qingge starts bringing SY fans he leaves behind and hunts down animals that are supposed to be useful for bolstering weak cultivation, SY invites LQG to tea and keeps the critters as pets, etc etc.
SY doesn't get the Head Disciple position, because that's only acquired via beating the current peak lord in combat and lol no. Also he's not interested in stealing it from Liu Qingge, to whom it rightfully belongs (in his mind). But that's fine, because Liu Qingge takes the position when the next generation ascends and then he lets SY exclusively handle all the peak duties SY actually likes (mainly teaching). It's perfect -- Liu Qingge gets to focus on his War God antics and occasional administration/meetings without having to deal with students his has no patience for, but the disciples of BZP don't get neglected because SY is actually teaching and organizing classes and student care. BZP hasn't enjoyed a golden age like this since it was founded!
Things are pretty good overall, but Shen Yuan knows that it's only a matter of time before The Plot shows up, and so he can't rest completely easily.
Meanwhile, the will-they-or-won't-they bets on Liushen have been going strong for a while now. The thing is, most of their martial siblings are convinced that these two are already "together", and just being circumspect about it. Those who know SY well (like SJ, YQY, and SQH) know better but think that SY's romantic obtuseness is to blame, whereas those who know LQG well (LMY, WQW, and MQF) are pretty sure that it's actually LQG's obtuseness that's the problem. Of course it's actually both of them, so efforts to "fix" matters by getting through one of their thick skulls inevitably run afoul of the other's.
An additional complication is of course: SJ doesn't like LQG (mutual), and now that he's the leader of his own peak, he wants to poach SY to come and live there. Not only so he can have one of the 2 people he trusts actually close at hand, but also because SJ also hates actually teaching the atrocious little brats on his peak, and would like to have SY come and do it for him. YQY is still a total pushover for him too, and is also now the sect leader, so YQY agrees that SY can change peaks if SY and LQG both agree to it.
Liu Qingge, of course, is a no, but he's a variable "no". He's not going to hold Shen Yuan against his will or anything.
As for Shen Yuan, it's... complicated. He doesn't really like BZP, but it's gotten a lot better than it was at the start. These days he's actually pretty proud of his accomplishments, and it's more comfortable, but it's still a rough and rowdy place with fewer creature comforts, libraries, or other appealing points than QJP. Also, if he goes to Qing Jing to teach, he can personally ensure that SJ doesn't go around persecuting any of his students!
But... SJ never lived with the Qiu family in this AU, and even though SY's not totally clear on what the PIDW backstory for SJ was, he knows he's a better guy now than the scum villain in the book was. He has a reputation for making cutting remarks, not for being an abusive snake or a lecher. SY's honestly less worried about him doing anything bad at all, and there are other people on QJP who can teach. It might even be good for SJ to promote more people to fill out a social circle he can rely on! That guy needs more friends, seriously.
And QJP really doesn't need more layabout literary intellectual types who get into pointless arguments, which is all SY would be if he went there. Just yet another nerdy scholar for the rich kids with middling cultivation that the peak favors to ignore. At least on BZP he's filling a gap.
SY is clearly torn, and the fact that SY's considering it has LQG upset, and LQG doesn't handle being upset very well, so of course they have an argument about it. SY storms off to cool his head and LQG is like, this is it, he's gone to Qing Jing Peak, I've drive him off by being too aggressive and he's probably remembering all those times I told him he didn't belong here and oh no what have I done maybe if I build him a heated bath and get him books he will come back???
Turns out that SY just went to An Ding to vent at SQH while SQH was like "I think you would have fewer problems if you and Liu Qingge just got married and my disciples could call you Shigu to your face instead of behind your back" and SY threw melon seeds at him and sulked on his fainting couch (which is always cold for some reason...)
Thus begins the Liushen Divorce Arc where SY tries to be anywhere but BZP or QJP, Liu Qingge tries to figure out what thing he can punch to fix this not-punchable problem, SJ is like "I don't see what the big deal is they should break up Liu Qingge is awful and I want my brother to teach my classes for me" like the spoiled youngest sibling he's finally allowed to be, YQY is trying to moderate this Hades vs Demeter situation and is all "well maybe SY could spend half the year on QJP and half on BZP?", and Liu Mingyan is going "I know my brother if this doesn't work out he is going to die single and pining like an idiot" and so keeps conscripting other disciples to y'know, lock SY and LQG into storage closets together (ineffective: LQG can punch through walls) or at least get them in the same room (underestimating SY's willingness to yeet himself out of windows to avoid awkward social interactions.)
By the time Luo Binghe joins the sect (as a Qiong Ding disciple), the drama is in full swing and is the main topic of gossip across most of the peaks.

AU where, at some point after Bingge gets thrown into the Abyss, SJ decides he’s had enough of the murder accusations and having to listen to teenage attempts to play music and wrote poetry, and decides to fuck off. He tells YQY he’s going into ‘seclusion’ for his cultivation and proceeds to change his clothes, hairstyle, and wear something that covers his face as he starts travelling around as a wandering cultivator under his original name (if asked if he’s related to that Shen, he just tells the truth — he’s an orphan who never knew his family). This eliminates at least 60% of his stress and anxiety since he’s actually able to relax without worrying about insults or keeping his reputation as a cold and elegant immortal master intact.
Time goes on, and eventually Bingge comes back. Hearing that SQQ is away, he figures he’ll just use the time to focus on gathering power and collecting evidence before he can take his revenge. Along the way, he ends up in a small town, where he ends up going to a brothel because Xin Mo is being annoying and he left his wives at home. He steps in the door and — is that Shen Qingqiu???
SJ doesn’t recognise this handsome stranger who’s uncommonly polite to prostitutes. It’s been years since he saw LBH and he was an underfed teenager then, no taller than him. Even the name wouldn’t jog his memory since it’s not like he ever used the little beast’s name outside of the occasional bit of paperwork. So, he invites him over for tea and they talk.
LBH is immediately convinced that this cannot be SQQ because he’s actually being nice to him. He invited him to sit down and have tea! He’s asking for his opinion on the music! He’s smiling! LBH is pretty sure SQQ would rather drop dead than smile at anyone, let alone him! He goes into conspiracy mode: is this a long lost relative? amnesia?? an alternate universe counterpart??? possession????
SJ now has to deal with this strange cultivator following him around, always ‘coincidentally’ visiting the same towns he does and offering to help him on night hunts… because LBH is too curious about this not-Shen-Qingqiu to leave him alone. Eventually, SJ decides the best way to get rid of this stranger is to become disliked by him, something he’s got plenty of experience with. Of course, his entire life story (who’s going to connect it to the Qing Jing peak lord anyway? and it feels surprisingly good to actually tell someone) is the perfect choice.
This has the opposite of the intended effect, as now they’re bonding over their mutually awful childhoods. SJ complains about how at least LBH had a mother, LBH points out that maybe it’s better to never have someone than loose them, and SJ brings up Yue Qi. LBH says he was abandoned in the Demon Realm, because the Endless Abyss is a bit unrealistic for an ordinary cultivator to escape, SQQ points out that he would probably have preferred the Demon Realm to the sect he ended up in, and LBH has to agree. LBH talks about his shitty master and SJ can’t help but compare him to Qiu Jianluo.
Bingge is Bingge, so of course this ends up with them in bed together. In a moment of passion, LBH accidentally calls him Shizun… and SJ realises, and immediately goes into crisis.

Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

Exposing SVSSS Fanon: 5/∞
MING FAN AS HEAD DISCIPLE OF QING JING PEAK
Rating: FANON - CONFLICTING
Most fanworks I've come across call Ming Fan the Head Disciple of Qing Jing Peak-- because of the prevalence of this idea, I even held to it in my own writing for a while. However, in canon, Ming Fan is NOT and never was Head Disciple.
This is another case of a fairly honest misconception, though.
In an earlier translation of SVSSS done by BCnovels, Ming Fan is referred to as Head Disciple:
"Descending the mountain this time is for the sake of gaining experience. This teacher will not be able to help you. Ming Fan, as the head disciple, you will need to vigilantly prepare so the demon won’t harm your fellow disciples." (BCnovels Ch. 6)
Shen Qingqiu said affably, “They were harvested from my head disciple Ming Fan’s family’s tea fields. As for whether they’re high-quality or not, won’t Shang-shidi know if he comes to take a meal at Qing Jing Peak?” (BCnovels Ch. 93)
(Many thanks to @shen-qing-qiu for providing these quotes!)
Even in terms of translation, the mistake is fairly honest as well. The exact position Ming Fan holds is 大弟子 (Da-dizi), and he is called 大师兄 (Da-shixiong) by Ning Yingying.
In some cultivation novels, 大弟子 is also the head disciple (I believe MDZS may be this way, but I do not have a copy of the original on hand to check right now), but what it literally means is "most senior/oldest disciple." It isn't necessarily the oldest of the group, but the one who was first to become a disciple of their master/a sect/etc. and has thus been training for the longest time, and has the most experience.
Ming Fan continues to be referred to as Da-shixiong even after Luo Binghe became head disciple:
Ning Yingying tugged on the battered and bruised Ming Fan. “Da-shixiong, did you hear?” she murmured. “A-Luo and Zhangmen-shixiong are saying that person is…Shizun?” (7S Ch. 13)
Which makes perfect sense-- even if the ranking has changed a bit, he is still the most senior disciple of Qing Jing Peak-- that won't ever change.
However, this is not the same as being head disciple.
In SVSSS, this is a separate category, where instead of being determined by seniority, the head disciple (首席弟子 Shouxi-dizi or 首徒 Shoutu) is a disciple specifically chosen for the role by the peak lord. Huan Hua Palace also has this role, and though less is known about internal sect politics there, it seems to follow the same sort of rule, with favored disciples being given this title.
Ming Fan is never referred to with this title. He is senior disciple, NOT head disciple.
The two quotes from the BCnovels translation above have since been corrected in the official TL:
“This trip down from the mountain is for the sake of your training. Unless as a last resort, this master will not assist you. Ming Fan, as the most senior disciple, you must design careful strategies, lest you let that demon harm your fellow disciples.” (7S Ch. 2)
“They were harvested from the tea fields of my senior disciple Ming Fan’s family,” Shen Qingqiu said affably. “As for whether they’re high-quality, won’t Shang-shidi know if he comes for tea at Qing Jing Peak?” (7S Ch.26)
It appears that when there is no head disciple, the senior disciple fills that role and performs the same duties:
All affairs on Qing Jing Peak, whether large or small, were handed to and looked after by Shen Qingqiu’s trusted subordinate, Ming Fan. (7S Ch. 1)
However, if a head disciple is chosen, many of these duties and authority will shift to the selected disciple:
These past couple of years, Shen Qingqiu had handed all manner of miscellaneous tasks big and small to Luo Binghe to deal with. After all, for now Luo Binghe was so sweet, obedient, and useful, his work thorough and meticulous. (7S Ch. 4)
At this point, though it has not directly been stated, Luo Binghe is the head disciple of Qing Jing Peak (there will be another post on this topic later).
One last note, I have also seen Liu Mingyan being referred to as head disciple in fanworks. This is a similar situation as Ming Fan's, though she is not even referred to as senior disciple. It isn't a big enough issue with enough canonical references to be worth its own post, so I would just like to add onto this post that Liu Mingyan is NOT head disciple either.

So interesting how the seeds of Luo Binghe’s blackening had already been planted by the time he arrived on Qing Jing Peak. People seem to forget sometimes that the negative worldview and twisted ideals were already there from his background on the streets. He wasn’t a pure-hearted, perfectly innocent child who was completely blindsided by the way he was treated— he already knew that good people in the world were few and far between. Perhaps he had just hoped that Shen Qingqiu would be like his mother, rather than like everyone else.
To me, this is a far more interesting Luo Binghe than the delicate, innocent, perfectly kind-hearted little boy that I see all too often. He is kind, but kindness isn’t something merely out of the goodness of his heart— his kindness and obedience are survival tactics. It’s a form of manipulation— at this point in time, not really something negative, but still an attempt to take control of the situation by turning others to his side. His relationship with Ning Yingying in this context is especially fascinating— does he really view her as a true friend, or just as a respite from the rest of the world, the one person who believes him to be good and kind and who won’t harm him? Does he actually care about her, or just her role in his life? Would it even be possible for him to tell?
Is it even possible for Luo Binghe to be a kind person, when he has used kindness as a survival tool for so long?
How much would that matter?
Either way, though, Luo Binghe’s outlook and innermost temperament had already turned bleak before he even met Shen Qingqiu— but in the end, those were still just the seeds. He was darkened, but it hadn’t consumed him yet and if that ten-year-old boy had been treated well, supported, and accepted from the start, perhaps the seeds would have gone dormant.
Who really knows?
In the end, though, those seeds of his blackening had already been planted into his worldview— Shen Jiu’s targeted abuse only caused them to sprout and grow.
The same way that those seeds had been planted in Shen Jiu during his early childhood on the streets, and were sprouted and nurtured by Qiu Jianluo’s targeted abuse until they consumed him.

The Qijiu position as the top two peak lords is fascinating to me, because if Shen Jiu really, REALLY didn't want to be around Yue Qingyuan, he could just leave! Shen Yuan spends about 3 years wandering after the Immortal Alliance Conference, so Shen Jiu wouldn't even have to leave permanently, if he needed to get away.
But Shen Jiu pursued the wealth and power and stability of Cang Qiong, and he's not giving it up! On the way to Shuang Hu City for the Skinner Demon, Shen Yuan comments on the carriage being packed full of luxuries like a fancy chessboard that won't be used and multiple tea sets, so I think it's fair to say that Shen Jiu liked being rich and being seen to be rich. Shen Jiu spent his childhood wandering the streets and his teenage years trailing after Wu Yanzi, he doesn't want to be back out there, even if he's now a powerful cultivator with the means to support and protect himself. He won't walk away from it.
The sect comes with rules and protocols and traditions. Yue Qingyuan has authority over the entire sect, but he can't press Shen Qingqiu and Qing Jing Peak too hard (it does not matter that Yue Qingyuan wouldn't do this, because Qiu Jianluo would have) without the other peak lords sitting up and taking offense at the sect leader interfering with one of these 12 subsects banded together. The entire cultivation world might take notice if Yue Qingyuan behaved badly. This kind of mutually assured destruction is not without tension, but it gives Shen Jiu a measure of control, which he is not going to give up to leave himself vulnerable and Yue Qingyuan as a powerful sect leader (enjoying the power and privilege that he thinks Yue Qingyuan happily abandoned him for).
I wonder if Shen Jiu ever told Yue Qingyuan to "prove himself" to him by abandoning Cang Qiong. "If you didn't leave me so you could chase power for yourself, then prove it, give it up," kind of thing. "I'll keep Cang Qiong for myself and YOU go away," kind of dare, because Shen Jiu is bitter and wants to hurt Yue Qi back or just wants to be left alone or whatever. (If Yue Qingyuan gets to enjoy this, then Shen Jiu isn't going to be the one to give it up and walk!)
Unfortunately for Qijiu's communication and potential reconciliation, I don't think Yue Qingyuan would do this, because I don't think he's willing to give up the power and control of being a peak lord either. Yue Qi also had an extremely shitty childhood and presumably hates being vulnerable. He's not about to abuse his position over Shen Jiu, but his position is how he protects Shen Jiu, so he's going to dig his feet in and refuse this demand, even if it makes Shen Jiu angry, because he's also worried about their survival. Better to have Shen Jiu angry and alive than defenseless.
So, they're stuck in this awful, tense state of affairs, because they both know what it's like not to have anything and they're not willing to give it up! Yue Qingyuan won't talk and Shen Jiu won't listen, so there's just this! It's agonizing.

Okay, au where Shen Yuan is the older than Shen Jiu and Yue Qing. And this boy just goes "I'm a single mother of two" mode, he is responsible but is on the fringes of unhealthily independent as to make sure both of these kids get food and water and have a somewhat decent childhood.
Shen Jiu most likely sees Shen Yuan as a reliable adult but with a bad penchant of focusing too much on Shen Jiu and Yue Qi for resources. Yue Qi sees the same but wants to help Shen Yuan in getting more food and water.
Of course when the Qiu House comes knocking, Shen Yuan puts himself in the stead of Shen Jiu and ensures both of them leave. While Shen Yuan tries to both get a better standing in the house and looking to leave over the course of the years, he doesn't hold out much hope for Shen Jiu and Yue Qi to come back.
Last SY saw of them, they were kids, thin and tiny and barely fast enough to outrun adults. But when almost a decade comes, both of them rock up.
SJ is pissed, but looks composed, but still ready to burn the place down. YQ is livid, looking calm as anything, but is talking very nicely with the Young Master of the house in getting one of their slaves.
SY is brought out. He looks slightly healthier, not much, but he has some weight to him, and he is clothed better than rags. He looks presentable. He looks over to the two and has a mini heart attack.
Dawning realisation that "oh fuck, I was raising the scum villain and the head of Cang Qiong Peak" add a light anxiety attack in his head as he just watches everything happen.
They leave, SY in slight shock as he is now free, to Cang Qiong. Now this can go anywhere.
I personally want SY to not be a cultivator but a librarian to the libraries of SJ's peak to help Binghe get the correct manuel but also guide him a teacher-adjacent way to him and others.
Sure, SY would have a shorter life compared to others, but I think with him trying to become a cultivator when he is an adult already would be more difficult and just not worth it.
But anyone can pick this up to something else, possible with a hibernating system until Binghe comes around? Who knows? But enjoy this random, in the moment au :D

There's all these AUs where Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are brothers/twins and Shen Jiu is a good brother! Or at least a brother whose intentions are good (even if the execution sucks major ass).
Give me an AU where Shen Jiu actually is a terrible brother. He takes advantage of their similar appearances to foist all the blame and punishments from the slavers onto Shen Yuan, steals Shen Yuan's meager scrapes of food and money, and hogs all of Yue Qi's attention and love.
Shen Yuan is left out in the dust.
Shen Jiu is concerned for only his own survival and that of Yue Qi who's treated him well and can protect him. Shen Yuan cannot - Shen Jiu sees no reason to like or wish to protect such a twin; he doesn't need such a deadweight, so he uses what advantages he has to having a brother but no more than that.
So when the brothers part, it's on bad terms. Shen Jiu stays in the Qiu manor with his broken legs and Shen Yuan slinks in the shadows, sneaking out of slavery by following a few steps behind Yue Qi's escape route.
Shen Yuan is jaded by his second life, growing up as a street rat. Shen Jiu's treatment and lack of brotherly affection hasn't improved things either - he's no brother in Shen Yuan's books, just someone that Shen Yuan happens to share a last name with. He doesn't feel obligated to help Shen Jiu.
He can only help himself. And armed with the knowledge of PIDW and all of its plants and animals, he does more than help himself.
Shen Yuan prospers.
And the next time he runs into Shen Jiu - now slated to become Shen Qingqiu, next Qing Jing peak lord - it's as the famed scholar and rising political power in the imperial courts, engaged to the prime minister's daughter (for wooing her was an easy task when Shen Yuan was already aware of her likes and desires as the sad widow who was defrauded by her first husband, a conman who passed the imperial government official exam and stole all her family's money after her father's dead, and later became Luo Binghe's wife #294 in PIDW).
Shen Yuan doesn't realize that he's practically just co-opted the protagonist role and the scum villain is his twin brother Shen Jiu :)
And like in the role of protagonist of a stallion novel, his first wife was only to get his pillar wet, but not for love. No, his actual harem is a harem of men chasing after the very oblivious protagonist... like Liu Qingge and Tianlang Jun.

shang qinghua is. I have favorite's.

-- This is a crossover.
-- A lot of spelling mistakes probably.

-- What Ships is reader in? I'm aiming for it to be a Liu Qingge X Reader however if this is not liked I take recommendations as well.
THIS IS PIDW TECHNICALLY NOT SVSSS.
• SHEN JIU'S PAST!!!!
• TW FOR THAT. PLEASE, STAY SAFE.
Shen (Name) groans and sighs before getting up from the chair to grab his sword Bǎohù
It was time for the Disciple selection..
He flew down and was immediately greeted by the peak lords he was well liked and loved unlike his elder brother Shen Jiu or also known as Shen Qingqiu.
That’s right he (Last name) ( First Name) , A lazy modern guy , died and transmigrated into PIDW not only that as an OC insert the scum villains younger brother!
Airplane , what kind of messed up tragic sad backstory did you need to give Jiu-Ge?!
Naturally they grew up together which meant his childhood sucked too!
Granted not that bad compared to him as that Qiu Jianluo took a very good liking to him and loved his naïve personality he was rarely beaten.
Which now knowing WHAT Qiu Jianluo liked and was thinking made him want to scream cry and rip off his skin to erase the feeling the skin that was touched by him.
What seemed liked innocent hugged were actually very much not innocent.
years later and after much trauma he became a peak lord!
So, that's that! Yippie hooray for you.
The (History of God's and Ghost's) "神与鬼的历史" (Shén yǔ guǐ de lìshǐ) peak lord!
It is the same ranking as Qing Jing Peak.
In this peak they learned about God’s and Ghost’s that are hidden and roaming around somewhere.
Their cultivation was communication with them.
Some Ghosts would occasionally help them when in need by lending them their strength.
In turn they would also help the ghost move on.
However, this is not safety assured as ghosts can be deceiving.
Shen (Name) would know himself, he’s half possessed by one called SYSTEM who forces him to do certain shit!
{ HOST, QIU JANLUO DID NOT NEED HIS DICK! }
Shen (Name) grimaces remembering that memory when the SYSTEM took control of his body and just chopped off someone’s dick.
‘ You didn’t need to use my body! ‘
{ D: Then, who else would SYSTEM posses? Your brother? No, thanks. }
‘ Die. ‘
{ SYSTEM will die when HOST 002 dies. }
Ah, right. Did he mention the author transmigrated with him?
Airplane Shooting towards the sky transmigrated into Shang Qinghua.
“ Didi, are you alright? You’re frowning. “ Shen Qingqiu asked snapping him out of his thoughts.
He hummed and looked towards the disciples hoping that today he will meet the protagonist Luo Binghe .
Yue QingYuan nodded at him and asked if he will choose a disciple.
Right, He himself rarely accepted new disciples they had to be specific and needed to be blessed or gained the attention of a god or ghost.
But as he looks down no one seems to have the veins that are gold or red.
Gold means a god has noticed them.
Glowing Gold means they have been blessed by one.
Red means a ghost has either noticed them or blessed them.
It was surprising to learn ghosts can bless people.
A ghost’s blessing boosts up your QI similar to the gods blessing but a ghost blessing also gives you luck while God’s give you some protection but not luck that would be on you!
Suddenly again he heard Liu Qingge and Shen Qingqiu fighting which is normal. However, they were fighting over a disciple.
He didn’t feel like getting involved and zoomed out before Shang Qinghua whispered to him.
‘ Bro, Go with Shen QIngqiu that’s Luo Binghe he took! ‘
he glared at Shang Qinghua for not telling him sooner and ran after Shen Jiu.
MEANWHILE…
SO, IT BEGINS TOUGHT A MAN WEARING SIMPLE WHITE ON A THRONE HIGH ABOVE WHERE NO ONE CAN REACH HIM.
THE man was beautiful with long brown hair and warm eyes.
The male wished he can help the poor soul yet, he is not allowed to interfere only drop some helpful information nothing more…
---
His peak was often described as a picturesque peak ( he was very proud of his peak ) adorned with tranquil ponds. The water is crystal clear, reflecting the beauty of the lily pads floating gracefully on the surface.
Koi fish gracefully glide through the water, their vibrant colors adding a touch of elegance.
The croaking of frogs adds a harmonious melody to the scene. The air is filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, and the sight of fluttering butterflies brings a sense of joy.
The overall ambiance feels inviting and pristine. Even the teachers and classes exude warmth and friendliness. It's a place where one can find solace and inspiration.
Near the peak lord's house you'll see a more beautiful building. The building is a shrine. Inside of it is a statue of the main god they learn about.
However, the statue isn't alone along with it is the God's husband.
The crown prince and also now heavenly emperor Xie Lian & his husband Crimson Rain Sought Flower Hua Cheng.
If you're lucky enough (or you're Shen (Name) ) you'll see silver butterflies flying around.
It make's a wonderful painting , silver Butterflies in the moonlight.
From the outside the shrine has an ornate and elaborate design, with intricate carvings.
Inside the shrine, you'll find a serene and reverent atmosphere.
To the side inside the shrine is a long table where offerings and candle's are lit.
His peak is always calm and right now that's where he wants to be not in his olders brother bamboo house with tension so high he's surprised the kid Luo Binghe hasn't fainted.
' It's the tea scene where he pours hot boiling tea on him ' he thinks.
He wishes he can move from his brother's side yet he can't.
The tea is poured , the child gasps and the master leaves looking back once at his brother.
Shen (Name) immediately goes to the poor disciple.
He grabs the towel from the table and gently wipe away the hot tea.
"I'm sorry, please don't mind my brother."
The child looks up naive brown eyes shining at him.
"N-no shifu it was this Disciples fault."
The peak lord can't help how his heart melts.
Shen (Name) from the past hated this scene and didn't understand why Shen Qingqiu did this. The Shen (Name) who he is now understands.
Luo Binghe's eye's and hair are similiar to Qiu Jianluo.
The child's name make it even worse. Luo Binghe..Luo...
Ning Yingying didn't help either immediately calling him A-Luo...
... something Qiu Haitang used to call her brother Luo-Ge...
Still, it's no excuse to what happened to this child but he can be sympathetic.
He'll show him around himself and leave he can't be absent from his peak but he can visit his brother and this child.
Maybe, in the way he'll see his cute shidi Liu Qingge.
Dropping off Luo Binghe at his dorm's in which he knows he won't be staying there longer Shen (Name) leave's and goes to the shrine.
He needs some advice..
He knows the god probably won't respond but he'll feel his presence and that's enough.

Bingqiu and Qijiu as Foils in Their Approaches to Atonement and Forgiveness (haitang-blossoms' Scum Villain Self-Saving System meta)
So first of all, both begin as relationships with a clear "caretaker" role: Qi-ge (Yue Qingyuan) for Xiao Jiu (Shen Jiu) and Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan) as Luo Binghe's shizun. In such a dynamic, there's a certain expectation of the older, more experienced one to look out for the younger, less experienced one.
However, both relationships, while initially close, suffer after a "breach" of this code of conduct is committed: wherein, the "caretaker" fails to properly protect and nurture the other.
What's interesting is this: Qi-ge and Shen Qingqiu do this in completely opposite ways. Qi-ge (inadvertently) sabotages his relationship with Xiao Jiu by INACTION (not going back for him) while the issues between Bingqiu begin by a clear (forced) ACTION (Shen Qingqiu pushing Luo Binghe into the Abyss). Neither wanted to do/not do these things but were compelled by circumstances outside of their control.
It's also notable that both Shen Jiu and Luo Binghe undergo a dramatic rise in power before properly reuniting with the other (Shen Jiu becomes an immortal Peak Lord and Luo Binghe gains influence in the Demon Realm and Huan Hua Palace).
This is not only a parallel but can also symbolise how the relationships have become more "equalised" over time. That is not to say that seniority has disappeared, however (Yue Qingyuan is still Sect Leader and Shen Qingqiu is still Luo Binghe's shizun).
Both Yue Qingyuan and Shen Qingqiu feel immense guilt over the part they played in souring their relationships with Shen Jiu and Luo Binghe. However, it is difficult for them to discuss these feelings openly, and so we reach our next theme: sacrifice.
Yue Qingyuan: In the original Proud Immortal Demon Way, he allows Shen Jiu to abuse Orignal!Luo Binghe, willingly allows himself to be trapped and killed by Original!Luo Binghe, and basically turns a blind eye to whatever mistakes Shen Yuan!Shen Qingqiu makes/is accused of in the new timeline due to a misplaced desire to atone for breaking his promise.
Shen Qingqiu: Shen Yuan famously self-destructs to "pay back" Luo Binghe for the wrongs he has done to him in the past, and readers see him protecting Luo Binghe throughout the story for a similar reason despite Luo Binghe's "protagonist halo" supposedly rendering this pointless (the Holy Mausoleum arc comes to mind).
How Shen Jiu and Luo Binghe react is completely different however, and this is key in why Qijiu and Bingqiu's arcs conclude in such contrasting ways.
Shen Jiu: First of all, it is important to note that while Qi-ge was important to Shen Jiu, he largely wasn't there for a long part of Shen Jiu's youth. Stuck at the Qiu residence, he was constantly abused and mistreated, and even though Qiu Haitang was nice to him, trauma like that cannot be easily overwritten. By the time Shen Jiu became Peak Lord, it had gotten to the point where his life had been so devoid of basic affection that his bitterness about Yue Qingyuan's broken promise was able to be magnified to such an extent.
This is not easily helped by the fact that Yue Qingyuan's form of sacrifice is mainly again, through INACTION or is INVISIBLE/SUBTLE to Shen Jiu. There is no defining moment where he directly addresses their past except at the end of the story to Shen Yuan!Shen Qingqiu which doesn't help Shen Jiu at all.
Luo Binghe: By contrast, Luo Binghe had lots of positive interactions with Shen Qingqiu in the many years leading up to the Abyss. While this may have made the betrayal sting more at the time, it also set up Luo Binghe to be able to not outright hate Shen Qingqiu after the fact (a more nuanced emotional reaction).
The self-destruction is such a definitive ACTION (and it helps that Shen Qingqiu spelt out that he was "repaying" Luo Binghe for past wrongs by doing so) that Luo Binghe is able to reconcile the situation and his feeling towards Shen Qingqiu where Shen Jiu was not able to towards Yue Qingyuan.
The next theme of "love" also plays off this difference as well. Due to a combination of trauma and his own personality, Shen Jiu was shown to struggle to love whether it be others or even himself. Any potential he had was overshadowed by the bitterness and envy that later come to define his character in Proud Immortal Demon Way. Yue Qingyuan's passive approach to Shen Jiu only served to enable these feelings and the resulting disastrous actions.
Luo Binghe was abandoned throughout his life (whether by choice or not is inconsequential), and this defines a lot of his character later on.
As White Lotus Luo Binghe, he's eager to please, and it's clear how starved for affection he is based on how much stock he puts in every kind act that Shen Qingqiu shows him. But a key aspect of Luo Binghe is that he believes he must continuously EARN this affection through reciprocity which is part of why it's so natural for him to serve Shen Qingqiu with his cooking and basically running Qing Jing Peak.
This plays into another difference between Shen Jiu and Luo Binghe: that while both suffer from lack of (perceived at least) affection, Shen Jiu retaliates by pushing everyone away while Luo Binghe instead seeks it out and returns any love given to him tenfold (even in Proud Immortal Demon Way, he spares and married Ning Yingying when he destroys Qing Jing Peak because she was nice to him in the past). And the fact that Shen Qingqiu is visibly remorseful of the past only reinforces this instinct.
Even when Luo Binghe almost goes mad from the influence of the Xin Mo sword, it is Shen Qingqiu taking direct and unmistakable ACTION (in this case, papapa to save the world) that saves them and their relationship. Bingqiu were able to reconcile because both parties were willing to actively WORK to rebuild it, which takes conscious and purposeful effort.
Qijiu ended up missing each other by seconds, so to speak, because they were too PASSIVE in regard to their relationship with each other. Shen Jiu never directly confronts Yue Qingyuan about his actions (or lack thereof) and instead stews in bitterness alone, while Yue Qingyuan is so busy walking on eggshells around Shen Jiu that he misses the one thing that could mend their relationship.
Both relationships contain heartache and misunderstandings, but their contrasting approaches to reconciliation, atonement, and forgiveness is ultimately the factor that determines how their stories conclude.
