Remembering the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing

On September 15, 1963, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, claimed the lives of four young girls—Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair. This tragic attack came at the height of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement, galvanizing support for the struggle against racial injustice.

The outrage following this event helped pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This horrific act of hate shocked the nation and strengthened the fight for justice and equality. Today, we honor their memory by continuing to work for a world where love and peace triumph over hate.

95 years ago today, a King was born. He was a dreamer…and so much more. He was a defender of those being oppressed and a challenger of oppressors. He was a student of the human condition and a strategist for humane change. He was a teacher, a thinker, a truth teller. King.

My Hero, The Great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You paved the way for all of us. To be Free at last. As you envisioned us to be able to be one with each other and to make a brighter future for our children. When I was little reading a children's book about you. You inspired me by your actions of peace through the words of love and kindness of what we shall be from what we are now. Your Dream Lives On In Me and Billions of others who follow your teachings that have shaped our way of living and our way of life itself. I am honored to make a artwork of you as I hope you know that you made me dream too and 1 day, I hope that we shall be free at last.

When we say institutional racism we mean it. In middle school, they upheld the same amount of security requirements to enter the building as a courthouse. They confiscated candy from you like it was contraband. Couldn't have snacks or juice unless it was part of a lunchable. Now as an adult in a different income bracket and enviroment, it's so easy to see the criminalization of Black bodies and poor people super early on in life. THIS is why we are adamant about educating our own community. THIS is why we unapologetically prioritize putting together opportunities and sharing information that will shift the narrative and sustainably move us away from that state of reality ever having to exist again. It took me 30 years to finally not feel like I have to defend myself for something wrong done by someone else Black or condemn the person for their actions.
