Now that she was a famous fashion designer, he didn't want to embarrass her or damage her brand by dressing like a complete loser when they were seen out together.

There comes a time in every serious relationship where one must confront uncomfortable subjects for the greater sake of all parties involved. For better or worse, she needed to finally acknowledge this particular question, as it was one she'd very specifically been avoiding. She puts a hand on his shoulder and stares him in the eye intently. She looks rather like a very serious, however adorable mouse. A deep inhale resounds, and she finally works up the gusto to answer. "Yes, Neku. If a spicy tuna roll came to life and was a person, it would be you, no contest."

"But, you know?" (Of course, would he even be asking her, if the sentiment didn't come with a dash of redemption in addendum?) A playful smile spreads across her lips, and she bat a flirtatious wink at him. "You're my favorite dish at the sushi bar."

Sunday Six

It's the time of the week!

I've been working away and several RGG projects this week, and the one I'm most excited to show off is a lengthier fic that explores Kuwana's life as a high school teacher. This was originally meant to be a small vignette in a fic that explored all of Kuwana's transformation, but then the high school teacher took the fuck over. I'm very proud of it, however, and especially the bit I'm sharing today.

The lecture that day was over haiku, which Kitakata usually enjoyed, especially with third-years. By then, students had grown up with haiku all their lives, so he was able to pull a deeper discussion of meaning, construction, and language. He’d start with one that always got laughs from the class:

The Master

Is full of regret.

- Yosa Buson

“What strikes you about this?” he asked, raking his gaze over the class. His eyes lingered on Kusumoto’s empty desk. 

“Someone needs to learn how to make sushi,” Kawai said, drawing a laugh from Suzuki and Akaike. 

“But he’s a Master,” Sawa pointed out. “He knows how to make sushi. I think there’s something very sad about someone who knows better but still makes such a basic mistake as preparing old sushi.” She locked her eyes with Kitakata then, a flare of indignation in her eyes. Kitakata plastered on a smile. 

“Quite good, Sawa-chan,” he said. “Although perhaps sadness is not the emotion to take from this. Rather, think of it as a warning to remain humble in your craft. You can always make a mistake, no matter how good you are.” 

The look in Sawa’s eyes seemed to intensify, and then she dropped them to her notebook as she scratched out some notes. 

He moved on to a famous poem that everyone in the room was guaranteed to know. 

An old silent pond...

“This one is about serene nature,” Suzuki offered. “I like it. It seems like such a peaceful scene.” 

“That it is,” Kitakata said with a nod. “Notice how Bashō is able to paint a dynamic picture in so few words. The energy moves from stillness, to movement, and back to stillness, like the cycles of life itself.” 

“Seems too boring to be real life,” Kawai suggested. “Maybe back in the samurai times this made sense, but today? We have cars, man.” 

“So you’re saying this haiku lacks a sense of timelessness?” Kitakata pressed. 

Kawai shrugged, but Akaike took up the conversation. “Yeah, I think it does. The modern world is just too different. I don’t even know the last time I saw a frog was.” 

“Perhaps this can serve us modern people as a reminder to slow down, then,” Kitakata suggested. 

“No way,” Kawai said. “You slow down, you fall behind.” 

“Interesting perspective, Kawai-kun,” Kitakata said. He turned to Sawa. “What do you think, Sawa-chan?” 

Sawa fiddled with her pencil, looking thoughtful. “I think there’s an overwhelming sense to the silence of the pond. Even though the frog disrupts the silence temporarily, it returns, and it’s like the frog had never even jumped at all.” 

Kitakata let a silence hang after Sawa’s words, surprised by her perspective. The silence was disrupted, however, by Kawai and Suzuki’s laughter. “You’re such a downer, Sawa-chan,” Kawai said, earning him a glare from his classmate. 

Shaking himself from the reverie, Kitakata moved on before Kawai and Sawa started arguing.

As Kitakata recited it, he caught Akaike and Kawai exchanging an incredulous look. “Now, I think this one resonates with me a little more than you,” Kitakata said. “You are all at the beginning of your lives, and you don’t get a sense of mortality until you’re an old man like me.” 

Suzuki giggled. “You’re not old, sensei,” she said. 

“See? That’s the correct response, very good, Suzuki-chan,” Kitakata said, and Suzuki giggled more. “Still, it is good to keep your own mortality in mind, even at your age,” he went on. “You aren’t invincible, as much as it may feel that way. Now, I’m not saying any of you are going to die young.” He paused and swept his gaze over the classroom again. Kawai rolled his eyes. “But you never know.” He smirked, and Akaike chuckled. 

He lectured on a few more haiku, but the end of class came quickly. He dismissed the class, hoping to make a quick exit, when Sawa stood up. He recalled, then, that she had asked to talk to him the day before, and he had completely forgotten about it. But before he could address her, Kawai jumped up.

“Sensei,” he said, drawing Kitakata’s attention. He closed the distance between his desk and the podium in two long strides. Lowering his voice, he asked, “My grade’s pretty bad, huh? Think there’s a way I can make up some of those missed assignments?” 

Kitakata sighed. “Kawai-kun, you know I don’t give out extra credit,” he responded. “That’s more work for me.” 

Kawai smiled, embodying all the cocky self-assurance a seventeen-year-old could. “Yeah, but I’m your favorite student, right?” he said with laughter in his voice. 

Behind him, Kitakata noticed Sawa’s shoulder sag. She gathered her backpack and left the room. He should have called to her to stay, as he had no intention of entertaining Kawai’s nonsense, but he was also eager to get home and relax. Perhaps whatever issue she had had already been sorted out. 

“The best way to salvage yourself here is to stay on top of everything for the rest of the term,” Kitakata said firmly. “Then, Heaven help you, you may have a chance.” 

If Kawai was disappointed by this response, he didn’t show it at all. “You got it, sensei,” he said. He grabbed his notebook, which Kitakata had noticed he hadn’t written in all class, and joined his usual crew out in the hall. 

“Idiot kid,” Kitakata muttered under his breath. He gathered his notes together and picked up the textbook he had been teaching from. As he placed his bookmark back in it, his eyes fell over another haiku. Perhaps it was the end-of-the-day fatigue, but the words caused a prickle of goosebumps to kiss his neck.

god i cant stop talking about shizaya it's 1:51 am

shizaya was literally built for outsider pov fics like their impact on ikebukuro is so huge in both izaya's behind-the-scenes manipulations and their blatant fucking destruction

i read a fic where kasuka described them as a tourist attraction which is the funniest shit ever

anyway you could like. walk down the street and see a knife embedded in some street sign and be like welp that's shizaya for you

there's so much you can do with outsider pov. obviously there's shinra who unfortunately is very aware that they're in love with each other but it's not like either of them would ever listen to him

but shinra can see the quieter ways they express their affection (established relationship, mutual pining OR mutual oblivious pining) in throwaway comments or furtive glances and stuff like that

like shizuo gets a phone call from someone while he's getting treated at shinra's and shinra can immediately tell it's izaya just from the way that shizuo's body tenses up with a weird sort of both aggravation and anticipation and he doesn't even realize that he's smiling and waves it off as one of those annoyed grins

or how izaya just doesn't stop talking about shizu-chan and is always planning something new to fuck him over

as opposed to erika who can see like. the clear glee in izaya's phase whenever he gets a rise out of shizuo + the fact that shizuo chases him so persistently and izaya will sometimes stick around instead of just taking off and continue to tease shizuo until he's caught his breath

kadota is more in the shinra category and celty is in the "god im so homophobic (but only for those two)" category and then you can have like the raira trio with their shallower but not unobservant perspectives

shiki is like izaya. bro. you had a job to do for me today so what is this?? and turns on the TV and it's just footage of izaya flirting with shizuo on main and izaya is like uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh not my fault that protozoan won't stop chasing me

and the tv shows shizuo getting hit by a billboard and izaya stopping and leaning over him and poking him in the cheek

and shiki just looks at izaya deadpan and izaya's like. well. id get in trouble if i killed him in the streets dont look at me like that shiki-san

OH AND SIMON simon is so unaffected i love whenever he's like "oh you're friends now? sweet come have some sushi" in fics as if he hasnt watched and prevented their beefing for like 10 years

it's just so good ugh the way their relationship is on clear display but also so hidden and instinctual but intentional

they are made of contradictions and opposites but that's what binds them so tightly together and that's why they try to keep their distance but can't help chasing after each other anyway GFJFDKHKHHSJSKHGKGDKJSD

Shizaya Week 2022

Jealousy AU

"Aye Flea, wanna watch TV?" Shizuo asked Izaya.

Izaya didn't look up. "Not now. Shiki has me on an assignment."

Shizuo fought back a growl. "You said that yesterday and the day before."

"Shiki is my boss." Izaya replied. "I have to work Shizuo."

Hearing his name in properly irritated him for some reason. "It's always Shiki this or Shiki that. He always has you on these stupid long ass assignments!"

Izaya huffed as he typed. "Shizuo, I'm busy. Go away and I'll be down in a bit."

"FINE!" Shizuo yelled and stomped off.

When he went down stairs he was fuming. Izaya hadn't spent time with him all week. Instead he was doing shit for Shiki. Always something for Shiki.

"Stupid ass. Hasn't even eaten today." Shizuo grumbled. "I bet Shiki never made food for him. Never fucking made him coffee or tea or even brought him a fucking snack."

Izaya came down to the kitchen to get a fresh cup of coffee.

"Izaya, I made Sushi. Come eat for a sec." Shizuo called to him.

"I can't, I'm working." Izaya spoke. He had his phone out and was looking down at it while he walked.

"Izaya! You haven't eaten today! Just sit for a damn second." Shizuo tried.

Izaya kept walking. "It's fine. Shiki sent me otorro."

Shizuo broke his fork.

"Look Izaya, it's late. Can you just come to bed?" Shizuo asked as he walked in. "Izaya?" He stopped at the desk to find Izaya asleep on his keyboard.

"Fuck..." Shizuo whispered. "Come on, let's get you to bed."

He then scooped up Izaya in his arms and carried him to bed.

When Shizuo layed him down Izaya mumbled "I'll do it later Shiki" and curled in on himself.

Shizuo felt fresh rage wash over him. "That's it." He went back to the office and got on Izaya's computer. He pulled up an email and typed to Shiki.

"Dear Shiki. Leave Izaya alone or I will come over there. He needs a damn break. He hasn't been to bed in a week and it's starting to piss me off. Stop sending him food too. Sincerely Pissed Off Boyfriend."

When he was done he hit send and made his way back to bed. He pulled Izaya in and kissed his forhead.

"Please don't hate me more than usual tomorrow." He whispered.
