Another big reason it's so hard to take anti-fiction arguments seriously is because I have reading comprehension, can read critically, and can enjoy fiction without having it radically change me.

I've never read any fiction with dark themes, no matter how sexualized, glorified, or whatever, that even began to make me think about condoning or supporting it in real life.

It's to the point where I'm genuinely confused by what point anti-fiction people are trying to make. Do they think that people are so brainless that they just support everything they read? of that somehow, if you read it enough, it just washes away all of your morals and core beliefs?

I'm so worried when I read very young people in the discourse side of things. It's so sad so many kids in fandom today are growing with the sense that they can't enjoy things, or that there's an inherently wrong way to enjoy things, or that they have to fight to have the freedom to like things from the get-go.

Being anti-ship or anti-fiction is just inherently and sometimes blatantly anti-kink.

"Romanticising/sexualising abuse", "using my trauma as a fetish tool", and literally any variation of "you use trauma as a kink so you think it's great" has been said against BD/SM, CNC, etc, since forever. This has been disproven or otherwise explained as to why that sentiment is wrong. Same applies to fiction.

Not to mention that understanding someone may have a fantasy, kink, fetish, whatever, doesn't necessarily mean that they actually want it to happen in real life. Take for example, someone with a detransition kink. They may own a blog dedicated to it, get off of it, and write about it extensively, still doesn't mean that they actually want to detrans and that they aren't happy with their transition.

Also 90% of what anti-shippers are complaining about are just kinks or fetishes. CNC, fauxcest, power dynamics, teacher/student, the list goes on.

That fic that "endorsed" abuse was probably just a story between two fictional characters in a fictional scenario that had a power dynamic, sadism, and rough sex. That "nasty" fic was probably just someone's way of enjoying their abduction and CNC kink or fetish in an outlet.

I find it funny when people cry about sexualizing fictional minors as if fandoms don’t constantly romanticize them by shipping them.

If those were real kids, drawing or obsessing over the idea of them kissing wouldn’t be okay. Obviously.

Two of my friends now who aren’t in fandom spaces have brought up how they thought it was weird that I shipped children. It took some explaining.

At the end of the day fiction is fiction, the characters aren’t real. Treat them however you like.

I'm so sorry to say this but, your trauma is not an excuse to dictate what other people can consume in fiction or not.

Your abuser was a proshipper, I'm so sorry you had to endure that, but before being a proshipper, they were, simply, a piece of shit!

The problem is, they'd have been a piece of shit whether they consumed that kind of content or not. People are not black and white. You don't exclusively consume content that you think is right to replicate in real life (you would leave like 90% of anime and fiction out that way), nor do you suddenly start think problematic content is okay to replicate just because you consume it already.

What you experienced is horrible. It was wrong and I'm so so sorry you had to endure that, I really fucking am. But this, applying your trauma-born logic to a bigger population and liking a bunch of strangers online to your abuser because of the media they consume, is not how you cope or deal with the situation.
