Mafia AU- Backgrounds
Kakashi Hatake- Son of old Police Chief Sakumo Hatake, Kakashi saw his father murdered by a sniper when he was 5 years old. Went into the foster system after that and bounced between orphanages, foster homes, and living on the street. Was found by Shikaku when he was 12 years old, after helping to protect Shikaku’s friend Inoichi from some of Danzo’s thugs
Rin Nohara- Raised in a rural home by parents who never viewed her as good enough, Rin struggled to be recognized for her intelligence and abilities. Finally proved to her parents that she was good enough by finding a way to poison them, leaving them to die in their family home and running off to the big city where she met Obito and ultimately ended up becoming his future wife and partner in the Uchiha Gang.
Obito Uchiha- Raised in the Uchiha gang, Fugaku always focused on Obito’s ability to be a great right hand man to him and in the future Itachi. Is skilled with a gun, in a fist fight and at retrieving information through torture (though not as good as Itachi at the last one)
Maito Gai- Gai was raised by his father until he was 13 years old, when Dai crossed paths with some of Danzo’s men demanding ‘protection pay’ from an old man who owned a store. Dai got into a fight with them to protect the old man, and ended up being killed in front of his son. Shikaku found Gai after hearing about Danzo’s men in his area threatening his community. Gai is hiding in the old man’s shop while the old man explains to Shikaku what happened, and when Shikaku goes to leave the old man asks what he should do about the kid who just watched his dad die to protect him. Shikaku decides then and there to take Gai in and partner him up with Kakashi
Tenzo Yamato- Found as a kid by Danzo after running away from a physically and sexually abusive foster parent, Tenzo was raised in Danzo’s gang to be an enforcer and in the future to replace Danzo as mob boss when he was ready to step down. Tenzo was Danzo’s right hand man until Danzo decided to send him to kill Kakashi Hatake after Shisui’s failed attempt, at which point Tenzo found himself being roped in by Kakashi and Gai to join Shikaku’s gang instead where he finds a much more comfortable and relaxing life with them.
Itachi Uchiha- Raised by his father in the Uchiha gang, Itachi became fed up when his father wouldn’t let him test his abilities. With Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP), Itachi never experiences any type of pain growing up which worried Fugaku because Itachi is unlikely to know when he is badly injured and needs to back down and get medical help. Because of this Fugaku is extremely protective of his son and unwilling to let Itachi do many risking jobs, leading to Itachi leaving his father's Gang to join Danzo’s alongside Shisui.
Shisui Uhciha- Feeling unchallenged by Fugaku’s insistence that he learn to be Itachi’s right hand man and main protector, Shisui leaves the Uchiha gang for Root where Danzo is more than happy to give him a sniper rifle and let him learn to kill from a distance. Shisui excels as a sniper and becomes one of the best in the business, only having one failure to kill on his Record, Kakashi Hatake. When Itachi joins Danzo’s gang, Shisui becomes his protector in a way that is much more fitting for him. As a sniper watching Itachi’s back from afar while he works on his interrogations.

Loving the Spider!Shisui so far, but you know me so I have to ask: does Shisui know Inoichi, Sora and Ino in this verse? Does he still have Inoichi as a father figure, or does the fact that he was older when his actual father died mean that there is no link between him and the Yamanaka?
(you've fully converted me to Yamanaka!Shisui feels and now I can't imagine him without Ino as his sassy little sister and without Inoichi making sure Shisui doesn't self-destruct himself out of a too strong sense of duty)
(also if there is a family like relationship there, I can't wait for the Yamanaka to meet Hobie. Because that's going to be glorious)
Haha I'm very happy you like my work so much 🥰 but I'll be the bearer of bad news this time.... for maximum angst, Spider!Shisui unfortunately doesn't have the Yamanaka support network in this series...
Inoichi is a scary information broker who is doing some very questionable things with his psychology degree 👀 Sora manages his business front, Ino is a hellion in school that Sasuke probably still hates lol
Readers: wait, is anyone in Konohattan actually good?
Me: define good
Readers: shisui
Me: he's deffo the closest but Shisui is also a killer, a thief, and the beneficiary of a lot of generational wealth 👀 (😂) he's doing good now... Not for the criminals or guys in power, but - for the poor people, yeah, Shisui's the good guy.... Most Naruto characters aren't tho, even if they're not 'Bad Guy Villains' either
Have a good one, Stereden 😉
Edit: The Yamanaka family meeting Hobie would be a RIDE of psychological warfare lmao
Second Edit: what about Spider!Shisui going to HOPE!Shisui's world with his bf Hobie and meeting the family there.... Wild

Maybe not the whole song, but I was listening to Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens and the part that goes, "The hospital asked should the body be cast/Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky/Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth/Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?" gave me major dad Inoichi grieving after Shisui's death
Tumblr media
Obvs not the rest of the lyrics but "I'll Never Love Again" by Lady Gaga always gets me bawling (especially the film version) so-
"Wish I could, I could've said goodbye
I would've said what I wanted to
Maybe even cried for you
If I knew it would be the last time
I would've broke my heart in two
Tryna save a part of you"

I didn't know i was capable of missing a fictional character until i found out about Shisui anyways
You ever just think about the chaos that would happen if adult! Shisui (around the current time of hope au) and kid! Shisui (just recently started working with Inoichi) got temporarily swapped in their times?
Like the squad goofing off only for one of Raidou's practice seals going off wrong and suddenly a very awkward group of anbu find themselves having to take care of little kid Shisui who is tiny, recently traumatized, doesn't technically know or trust them, and has yet to truly be properly socialized outside of his clan and then on the other side you have adult Shisui being thrown back to a time Danzo is still around without any of his friends/family/allies and having an unknown, limited time frame to try and change things
I've only just seen this ask (😅) but omg
Older!Shisui would only be a few years younger than Inoichi so that would be deeply hilarious because Inoichi has only just started to realise that he's gotta actually, you know, commit to being healthier and being a stable adult role model (parent) and then BAM! This full grown Uchiha, claiming to be his student, starts ripping into Konoha and dragging Inoichi along like he's not insane???? An Uchiha who knows waaaaay too much about Inoichi's Clan secrets and his horribly complicated relationship with his family and (Inoichi, in the future, fit very well with the "boiled frog" analogy. He didn't quite realise, until in hindsight, how deep into the bullshit Shisui had dragged him as they grew together. It's, ah, a shock😂) also lmao Minato is still alive, so is Kushina, Kakashi is a moody little shit and he's so unbelievably angry that this cheerful random Uchiha came up to him and scuffed him like a (naughty puppy) seasoned Hatake 😂
MEANWHILE-
Genma, drunk off his tits, slams his hand down on Raidou's notebook before throwing it at a laughing Shisui's head: and then, hahahaha, I said- OH SHIT!
Genin!Shisui, appearing in a poof of smoke to find himself in the middle of a bar at 1am:
Tumblr media
Squad Two: DID YOU JUST SHRINK?? I DIDNT KNOW UCHIHA COULD DO THAT-! (Raidou: 🤡💩, Genma: 🤩🤣, Tenzo: 😧😶‍🌫️, Kakashi: 🥴📸)
Genin!Shisui: w-where is Inoichi-sensei?! We're on a mission, Jounin-san, what happened???
SQ2: oh shit, GET AN ADULT
Inoichi, upon seeing Genin!Shisui: 😭✨😭✨ oh fuck i forgot how cute you were, cmere and let me cuddle you oh god I can't believe I didn't tell you I loved you for too long and look at your little feet and you can't even carry Akira yet can you oh god- *clutching Shisui to his chest*
Ino, the same age but an inch taller than her nii-san: ✨MY✨TURN✨TO✨BE✨IN✨CHARGE✨
Genin!Shisui: everyone got really tall and really emotional...

Shisui nii-chan and Ino Imouto AU but when Sasuke told Ino the truth of Shisui’s death Sasuke expect her to scream loudly in grief but Ino just stared at him coldly, silent cold wrath that could make a lesser men running. (And Sasuke would rather run too.) He could feel her chakra in cold fury in the interrogation room. Itachi sometimes warned him that a woman’s wrath is a terrifying sight and he didn’t believe it until now.
Ahhh fuck
You know what this calls for?
ROOT vs. Ino AU
Ino refuses to believe Shisui is dead and decides, as the nine-year-old heir to the mind-fucking Clan, to investigate it herself. She breaks into her father's office, she breaks into ANBU to recruit SQ2, she drags her classmates into it and skips a lot of schooling... she visits Itachi at the Station, before he gets bail and is shut up behind the Uchiha Compound walls, and ends up making friends with Shino, who lost his own pseudo-big brother in suspicious circumstances and has a hive that can track the last, fading traces of Shisui's chakra....
They go to the Uchiha shrine, Ino finds cane marks in the grass, before they're caught and scolded by the Uchiha. They're picked up by certain ANBU who may or may not be Squad Two (who are also not coping at all...), who exchange hand signs as they drag the two kids home. They obviously don't know that Shisui had been teaching Ino some secret signs she's not supposed to know, as they talk about the Uchiha butting heads with the Village Elders and this incident not helping the friction.
Ino realises that maybe something really deep and ugly is going on.
Ino thinks Shisui has gone missing, there's no body so she absolutely refuses to think he's dead and there's no way he'd CHOOSE to leave her, but... Shisui had a big bounty on him, so most enemies would have cashed it in. And! And! His eyes are super special, so he's obviously been kidnapped!
And, in her logic then.... Shisui was the one to bring Tenzo around that first time, skittish and silent and so disturbed by a simple shared meal, and Ino isn't an idiot, she knows what it means when the plants in her mother's garden respond to Tenzo's presence, but no one in the village seems to care that the last Senju is hiding in ANBU so where was he before all this??? No one seems to know he exists but he's right there!
The only way to get any further is... to snoop around the Hokage Tower to find where Tenzo came from and where Shisui could be now instead.
She's caught by ANBU, of course, and brought before Sarutobi, who is sympathetic as he knows that Inoichi is not coping, but firm that this cannot happen again. Ino demands to know if the Sandaime is aware that really special, talented young Shinobi are going missing (meaning Shino's Torune, Tenzo, and now Shisui). Ino bluffs and says that she's there with her dad's permission, that T&I are on the tail of the culprit, but Danzo is also there and his eyes are very very sharp.
That night ROOT come for her and Ino wakes in a bunker with her previously-KIA cousin Fū leaning over her and the boy she is now sure must be Shino's adopted brother. Will she find Shisui kept captive here too??!?
(Is Shisui dead or did Danzo catch him first???? Who knows!)
That morning, with Ino's bed empty, Inoichi loses his shit

Okay so I've had this soulmark au thingy stuck in my head since my mind, running through multiple ideas at once like usual, accidentally crossed wires on "Shisui" and "soulmates"
Fair warning this is a bit long so uh,, sorry lmao
So! Au where the most of the shinobi population and a portion of the civilian population started developing what they called soulmarks because the higher entities got really tired of everyone killing everyone like idiots-
these soulmarks seem to form on your skin (Haven't decided what they look like) after you meet someone you can truly trust to have your back. Since soulmarks are about trust, loyalty, etc they have nothing to do with any romantic feelings (though they're probably romanticized in media). It is very common to have multiple soulmarks, and they aren't limited to just humans! Those with summons/animal companions they work with almost always get soulmarks to represent their animal partner(s) due to their extreme loyalty.
Soulmarks don't tend to form immediately after meeting but over time- though some get suspicious after a year markless. Sometimes people don't fit together as well as they think, sometimes they change and get along after time, sometimes one of them just can't bring themself to trust the other yet, etc. There's many reasons and cases of those who you think you should have a mark for not forming- while a clear reason is unknown, it quickly became a death/betrayal omen in the more superstitious shinobi communities.
Some extra info- Academy kids soulmarks with their classmates are often taken into consideration for team formations. If the person who's soulmark is in danger, it feels like pins and needles under your skin. If they feel extreme emotions, it either heats up or goes cold. Death causes soulmarks to darken and fade, but soulmarks only truly disappear when you can no longer trust them at all- often followed by betrayal. Soulmarks can be onesided- though more often in the case of one of them being very young (ex: siblings).
Now with all of that, some ideas-
• Kakashi's first soulmarks were his ninken
• Tenzo's first soulmark was Kakashi, i think it kind of freaked him out
• Shisui and Itachi formed soulmarks for each other as soon as they met, despite Itachi being so very young
• Shisui has soulmarks with his Yamanaka family despite refusing to realize he was practically adopted
• Shisui has soulmarks for his summons, which is a very big matter of pride for them
• Kakashi never formed soulmarks with his childhood team
• Gai has shed tears of joy, multiple times, for every soulmark he has
• Shisui and Kisame formed soulmarks for each other
• Kisame got a soulmark for Samehada and Shisui lost his mind when he found out because wtf
• at least one member of Squad Two has unknowingly formed a onesided soulmark with Naruto
• Genma has a habit of checking his soulmarks multiple times a day
• Raidou is fascinated by soulmarks and wants to study them
• Kagami never had a soulmark for Danzo, Sarutobi did and refuses to acknowledge what it means now it's gone
And now the one idea that started it all ✨
• Squad Two not having a soulmark for Shisui, possibly onesided where Shisui has theirs, until right before Danzo betrays him :)
Two main ways you could take this- Shisui somehow surviving the first attempt bc everyone who has his soulmark is pretty much alerted to that he's in danger
Or in hope au style, Shisui doesn't survive and wakes up in the past only for the others to get his soulmark and getting almost phantom sensations bc he's reacting to a danger that technically hasn't happened- maybe even his mark being unnaturally darker than it should be..
Also I'd just love to see how the others would react to having a soulmark from Shisui during his long mission bc it seems like it just kept getting worse for him LMAO
Do with this what you will, i just needed to write it down and get it out of my head so it would stop haunting me
Anyways I hope you're having a great day <3
Wowza!!! ✨✨✨
This is just a magnificent ask, I'm so impressed with the thought you've put into this AU! The delicious delicious platonic found family angst!!!!
What if 🥹 shisui had the squads soul marks the whole time 🥹 but they were between his shoulders (like wings) so he never saw them 🥹 and the burn just blended in with the pain of training, the buzzing chakra of Shunshin, the shame of sharingan eyes always watching him and finding him lacking 🥹 can you fucking imagine them begging to know why shisui didn't trust them with his problems and he breaks down and says they can't accuse him of that shit when he knows he gave them marks but they never gave him any back 😭 the angst, the gut wrenching whump.... This is such a good AU, anon!!!
SHISUI AND KISAME FORMING SOULMARKS AFTER LITERALLY A WEEK WORKING TOGETHER IM SO EMOTIONAL FOR THEM LMAO I CANT DECIDE IF IT'S BETTER THAT THEY DONT REALISE UNTIL AFTER THEY'VE SPLIT WAYS AND HAVE SEPERATE "OH SHIT" REACTIONS AND THEN SHUFFLE AROUND IT FOR AGES OR THEY GET THEM AS SOON AS THEY STAND UNITED AGAINST THE WORLD AND THEY SIMULTANEOUSLY FEEL THE SEAR OF THE MARK AND-!!! OOOOOH BOYYYYYY
Ino was born with Shisui's soulmark on her besides her parents'🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹❤️‍🔥
This is so beautiful and interesting, anon, thanks for sharing with us!!!! Have a great day, this was a lovely way to wrap up the week 🥰

Hey hey!! I was wondering if you could tell me some of your headcanons/ideas/details/etc for your fav characters? I've been really stressed lately and seeing people talk about characters they adore give the best good vibes :]
Hey, anon!
I'm sorry things have been stressful for you 🥺 I hope things work out and calm down soon!
(honestly this is ironic though because I've also been stressed beyond belief hahahaha-)
I was wracking my brains trying to think of who I could talk about for a bit before... I hit me! Who do I always bring in but I rarely get the chance to really dig deep into as a character?
Inoichi!
Tumblr media
I'll just... ramble 🥰
I initially picked Inoichi, name-dropped as Shisui's sensei in In the Eye of the Beholder, because I had seen quite a few fics that centred around Shikaku from that generation and I knew I wanted someone different. He's also very distinct from the Uchiha, he's respectable, with talents that worked really well with Shisui's, and in a position of power that could act as a counterbalance to the status of the Uchiha/Police etc. Inoichi's exact role in T&I didn't matter much in Eye because he was a minimal mention, past tense, and only really served to contextualize Shisui's own skill.
When I got to writing HOPE AU, starting with No Tomorrow, things became much clearer.
Inoichi hadn't ever really factored in with me, beyond a vague disbelief that he'd let Ino get away with not training and going on a stupid diet in canon, but he'd been growing on me. Something about his soothing presence compared to Shisui's more hectic, quick action, just clicked and the pieces came together. Whilst Itachi & Shisui work because Shisui is a kind of twisted martyr/role model who Itachi, quieter and tragic in a slightly different way, always looked up to (and the world went to shit for real when Shisui left Itachi to scramble with the fragments), Shisui gets to have his own guiding force with Inoichi.
Inoichi, ironically, is something of a moral compass and a foundation for all of my stories. Whilst Shisui is the protagonist and narrator, more often than not, he's also tormented and unreliable in his perspective, for all he tries. Inoichi, however, is much more grounded. This is because I wanted Inoichi to be the remedy, in a way, to Shisui's mania and trauma and very visceral POV.
Example: Shisui wanted to martyr himself for the village, putting everyone's lives above his own... So that his dream of peace could continue in a way that was very specifically his. Inoichi, in turn, wants to rid the village of corruption, so taking down Danzo is more important than his own safety and position... Because he wants to keep his family, especially Shisui, safe.
Again, this is all ironic because Inoichi is never detached or clinical when things are connected to Shisui yet you can still trust him, as a reader, to 'keep a lid' on things. What makes this so delicious to me is that most of Shisui's methods and coping mechanisms... are directly copied from Inoichi. Shisui manipulates people like Inoichi taught him to, he takes stock, he manipulates his Clan in a way that is very distinct from other Uchiha (like Mikoto) because it's actually Inoichi's influence.
Even when I'm placing them as counterparts, they are symmetrical. Shisui is sobbing and breaking down and lashing out? Inoichi is soothing him... Whilst also feeling that grief and fear and pain. He's really so emotional, but he is able to put it into his professionalism because he desperately wants to help; it's a kind of selfish selflessness that Shisui also uses a lot, putting everyone before himself... But in the direction of his own goals.
And then! Then we get this glorious imagery! Sun and mood, dark and light! Summer and winter! Completely reversed!
Sun and Moon? Aesthetically, Shisui is dark and pale, he (cba for real quote) thinks a true Shinobi is faceless in the darkness for the betterment of society... But he undeniably burns brighter than the sun. Inoichi is golden hair and sea blue eyes and nurturing care, he has a wife with a flower shop and a nine-to-five, a clan and a family, he doesn't go on bloody missions from home... But he is most definitely the moon in this situation, serene and controlling and vigilant.
Summer and winter! Idk how to tell you that I pose Shisui in monochrome lighting so much not just because it's dramatic and he looks great, it's about the brutality and the crisp lines, it's about the survival and the burning heat inside with coldness in action... But, again, Shisui burns, he flourishes given warmth and nurturing, he withstands the heat, he basks in the sun, he melts and unwinds... Inoichi is winter because he is so bitingly cold in anger, he is eyes like ice and arguments that you can't fight against and chakra that is refreshing but can turn so bitter in an instant.
Dark and light? Again, Shisui appears dark, he literally works in Black Ops, but he has a spark to him - literally, with his nature, his Susanoo, his glowing Dojutsu - that draws others like moths to a flame and, despite everything, he is always searching for goodness. He wants peace, he does not revel in the gore, he is deeply empathetic to foreign Shinobi. Inoichi, like I said, is golden and he upholds the laws, he does wellness checks on Shinobi and intervenes on their behalf, he takes his subordinates and his superiors to task, he wanted to change the world with Minato... But he is the torturer of the Leaf, he has so many secrets that they're locked behind a hidden vault, he tears apart minds and he collects evidence and he stews on his information, plotting.
So far I've spoken mostly about Inoichi alongside Shisui, which is understandable because they are THE duo of the whole series.
But what about Inoichi alone?
He might've lived longer than most characters, much longer than Shisui, but we never got much to work with so I pretty much went by vibes and rolled with it.
First things first- contextualising his abilities. Now, some fic writers might be okay with the bullshit that is Kishi's non-existent timeline but I wasn't and neither am I the kind of person who can just willfully imagine that somehow we went from feudal energy with the Founders to video games with B[redacted]'s generation. Especially not when I'd reworked the timeline so that we're around year 64 when Shisui and Danzo's drama goes down. So, with that in mind, I had to question how much legitimate psychological study had been done in this time. I tried to bracket it by generation, but also I only have a vague sociological understanding of the field of Psychology and I really can't afford the time - or have the will - to dig enough into that to make Inoichi a psychologist by our modern standards. Welcome to camp: How To Bullshit Inoichi!
Now I don't know a lot about psych but I have studied nationalism so the propaganda side of things was much more fun haha. Inoichi's job became as much as a safeguarding measure for the state as much as it was about the actual Shinobi. Inoichi's whole role in the village, and therefore his very core sense of purpose, is to keep the Shinobi forces 'in line'. The imagery of the tree filled with leaves, the teamwork and will of fire, the obedience and feral loyalty and martyrdom might have been plastered across every surface and shoved down every orifice by the village as a whole but it's Inoichi who ensures that it sticks. If someone is unfit for a job, it'll be influenced by this loyalty, if someone is losing faith in the field then it's just as a much of a red flag as self-sabotage or a mental break.
It's a game, all of it, and the Hokage is actually on the board for this one; this shaped the kind of person Inoichi has been for most of his life, this overlap between individuals and the big picture.
Inoichi comes from a Clan who have notorious mental techniques, who are allied with a Clan that makes alternative medicine, controls shadows and have scary intelligence, as well as a Clan that is so well-connected across the continent that they may as well be the mafia, that are brutally strong even without the augmentation, and who have an extremely welcoming clan culture. Where do you situate yourself in this?
I think it's quite telling that, whenever I talk about Inoichi, it's generally how he reflects and manages the different personalities around him.
Inoichi is an only child - Yua's parents are actually his cousins, 'niece' is sentimental, so yes her grandfather was the Uncle mentioned below - and his mother died when he was young. His father Inojou, we know (I say, like I didn't write this lmao), was both Clan Head and Head of T&I before Inoichi inherited these roles. Inojou took on the Department under Tobirama's tenure (Tobirama died when Inoichi was seven).
The Nidaime was dead, Inoichi was soon to graduate, and being the best Yamanaka Heir was all about being the best Shinobi possible. For most kids, that would be fighting. For a Yamanaka? It's about the power and control. From an adult? Masterful, upsetting, discomforting. From a prepubescent child? Fucking horrifying and possibly overly cruel before Inoichi worked out how to walk the line. Yikes.
So the household, it's immediately clear, was one that was cold, vacant, and work-obsessed. Inoichi's softest memory as a child were the rabbits his mother kept when he was a very small child, before she died. That's it. Inoichi, as I've mentioned before, was an extremely manipulative child. Why? Nurture and nature, he was alone with a father who lived and breathed his work and clan history, his playmates were Chouza and Shikaku (who, some of you might notice, I've really leaned into a slightly more dangerous interpretation of him✨) and the world seemed to be falling apart around them.
As a teen, going through the second war when Konoha was the one committing all those atrocities in Rain Country (traumatising Konan and the boys), when the Sannin were just getting their feet on that pedestal... Inoichi is only falling deeper into this mentality that Konoha was cultivating within him. He'd be working at his father's elbow in the middle of wartime, when ethics just don't exist, and we've already had mention from Inoichi before about some atrocities his own Uncle committed in the first war in the name of 'science'. Shisui's education was softened by Inoichi's care for him; Inoichi never got anything like that from his own father, their relationship was like playing 3D chess nonstop, including every little thing. Informative, yeah, but not comforting or restful.
Then we get the big turning point; Inojou's death. Inojou, unlike most character deaths in Narutoverse, didn't pop his clogs in a violent skirmish in the field but, rather, in his own domain; a Mindwalk.
Can we just appreciate the horror and trauma that Inoichi's only close family, as well as the person he'd learned everything from,... died from the technique that was supposed to ensure his absolute control? Inojou Mindwalks an assassin, the assassin's mental safeguarding triggers a suicide Jutsu, and it manages to take Inojou with it, rendering his body literally brain-dead. Mic drop
This was in wartime. Inoichi is completely alone in the world, his clan a distant but pressing responsibility, his teammates and friends like Chouza, Shikaku, and Minato are just barely grown men in their own right, with their own problems and none of them have inherited power like this yet. They keep going out to the front lines; Inoichi has to stay right there and, somehow, immediately pick up where his father left off. Using the very techniques that killed Inojou.
Inoichi goes home, to his big empty Clan Head House, his friends far away, and gets dangerously drunk and, in his own words, "howled like a deranged soul, barely human." 🥹 He was not fucking okay.
This goes on for.... gah, maybe a few months before Shisui's Genin Team are killed and Inoichi, stressed to his eyeballs and absolutely not in a position for a student let alone a pet-project like 'keep the newest, youngest Mangekyou sane so we can use him', is not ready.
I've written this scene before (Tomorrowland), Inoichi's impatience frustration bleeding into curiosity and, eventually, empathy. He's too stubborn to give up and then he gets so invested.
This another defining moment in Inoichi's character. He's been raised to be manipulative to unmatched levels. Shikaku recognises it in him, it's how they align, and Chouza is self-assured enough and welcoming enough to know exactly what Inoichi and Shikaku are like and survive - in fact, flourish - whilst embracing them.
Inoichi doesn't think he's cut out to be a tutor, let alone a sensei. I think, pretty much from the get-go it was inevitable that they'd be family. They... recognised something in the other. For all my parallel imagery earlier, the harmony between them is even stronger; morally and ethnically suspect specialities, gentle words and hard action, big pictures with some extremely precious few loved ones.
Inoichi spent a fortnight visiting Shisui's hospital room, the little Genin struck mute by guilt and grief, and talked about anything he could think of. He spoke about guilt on missions, breaking his leg from mistaken arrogance and realising he'd put his team at risk, he opened up about the few memories he had of his mother, he tries to coax Shisui into opening to him... By opening himself up first. Just talking to Shisui about food makes him go home and cook his first square meal in weeks!
Inoichi becomes much more human again.
Inoichi's T&I is different from the versions that came before. Inoichi's Clan is different as well. It was through trying to help Shisui actually heal, not just function as a weapon, that taught Inoichi how to heal and open himself. Working with Shisui's Mangekyou and his Uchiha techniques helped Inoichi adapt his own Clan Jutsu, he implemented safeguarding against what happened to his father, learning how to torture and interrogate people with his words and body language instead of just clan techniques, how manipulation can be used to genuinely help people. Do you think Inojou was the closest thing Konoha had to a psychologist too? Nope, Inoichi induced that side of things too
This also marks a time in Inoichi's life when he's involved with Minato's Hokage campaign, to the extent where Kushina gifts him some rare sealing paper and helps him install a secret reinforced vault in his office 🤭 Inoichi also started reading parenting books to help with Shisui lol
Inoichi married a civilian woman who had little interest in Shinobi affairs, with skills that don't compliment the Yamanaka in that sense but, rather, do in the spirit of them. Sora is snarky and mischievous and tender and empathetic, she brings out the best in Inoichi, as he does with her, and they are matched because they chose each other and grew together to make it work.
Inoichi hasn't completely transformed. You'll notice that there's always a line between him and Shisui's friends, we don't get a clear insight into the dynamic between Mikoto and Inoichi (they exist in the same space when shit hits the fan with Danzo and that's about it), and you never see Sora's side of the family. Inoichi is a taskmaster with his staff, he is breathtakingly cruel to those in his cells, and he could barely hold himself back from fucking up Kisame's mind! Shisui is his only 'therapy' client. Just wait and see what else unfolds in the series gah!
I just really love Inoichi, i think the way he's approached this part of his life where he is defending and raising his children, after the way he grew up, is just so endlessly fascinating. The kind of fucked up moral compass he has, which because of both his role in Shisui's (protagonist) life and the way his say-so shapes the village, became like... the centre of right and wrong in the story, his particular brand of loyalty and paranoia, the contrast of his wonderful heart and his terrible abilities...
I just really love Inoichi! 🥰
Enjoy, Anon! Hope things get better soon~

Shisui deserves a big and tight hug poor boy
Shisui was a professional.
He was deadly, he was highly trained, a Chuunin where many of his peers were barely Genin , and the newest entry in the Bingo Books as a D-Rank "Proceed with Caution" runner.
He was also functioning on only a few hours sleep, between the newborn wails of Sasuke at his aunt's house and Ino from upstairs. Running messages through the hot, southern forests in mid-summer before returning for double babysitting duty would've reduced even Rikari-senpai to tears, Shisui was certain.
It was July, balmy even at ten PM, and the sun had only just sunk behind the horizon. Through the open engawa doors, the sky slowly faded from peach to lilac, a deep blue directly overhead. Shisui had been watching it, the slow drip of sunlight over the porch and the flowers beyond, but it was warm and his eyelids had grown so heavy. It said a lot about how comfortable Sensei's home was, the latent buzz of chakra a mediative hum in Shisui's senses. It soothed, rather than pricking his awareness and Fugaku-sama would've been horrified at his nephew's lax attitude to vigilance.
Shisui was slumped out on a cushion on the floor, where he'd collapsed after Ino had finally decided to go down for the night. Sensei and Sora-sama wouldn't be back from their date for a while, Shisui had already scarfed down his own dinner in between making sure Ino was fed, and he found himself in a rare moment of stillness.
His limbs splayed out like a starfish, the open doors casting lilac light over his lax figure. He was in Sensei's office because it was directly beneath Ino's nursery and, even from below, Shisui would immediately hear if she started fussing. Sensei wouldn't have minded, he'd told Shisui as much on multiple occasions, but Shisui still would've hesitated in lingering if he wasn't so tired.
He must've dropped off for a moment, lazy blinks slowing into each other until his features slackened in a light doze...his body a fuzzy and distant thing... until Shisui slowly realised that someone was speaking.
Their voice was warm and deep and Shisui was a trained killer but his subconsciousness refused to spike to awareness. There was a hand on his face, closer to his eyes than any Uchiha would normally allow, but Shisui couldn't even lift his lids to peek at who it was. There was no fear response, no adrenaline, he listened to smudged sounds speak words he didn't bother translating, inhaled deeply to catch the scent he knew above most others, and felt his mouth curve upwards the slightest degree.
Home.
The words paused, hand shifting across his cheek until a thumb could touch the hint of smile, and Shisui kept floating. There was no reason not to; he knew this voice, this chakra, this touch. There was nowhere safer in all the nations.
Another hand slid beneath his neck, slow and careful as it nudged his head up and forwards until it met the crook of a neck. It was easy, then, for Shisui to curl into that line of warmth, seeking out the musk of paper and sake and figs and burying his nose into it, filling his lungs.
Another pause, a chest that expanded with a deliberate breath, and then the hand left his face and hooked under Shisui's knees. In one smooth movement, the floor and cushion disappeared, warmth from his own body and the lingering sunset gone. Shisui curled up tighter, away from the cool rush of air around his spine, and found one of his one hands twisted in linen whilst the other sank into...hair?
It was too late to think too deeply about any of this, the chakra surrounding him was too much for Shisui's lingering awareness, and he dipped back into sleep before they could take a single step.
(In the hallway, Sora stood and watched as Inoichi cradled Shisui to his chest and headed for the stairs. Her hand was raised, fingers touching the curve of her smile; not to conceal but, rather, to luxuriate in the wonderful sight before her. It wasn't often that Shisui-kun let himself relax, even late at night or in their company, and to see him so affectionate and... acting his age?
There was a tenderness to Inoichi's face, his own gaze downcast as he memorized - without the benefit of a Sharingan, as Shisui could have, and all the more dedicated for it - the dark crescents of Shisui's lashes and the smile still lingering on his mouth. In Inoichi's arms, he didn't look like a Chuunin, like an Uchiha prodigy, like a wielder of a Mangekyou Sharingan at only thirteen years of age.
He was a boy, just a boy, and his father was carrying him up to bed.
"Goodnight, Shisui," Sora heard her husband's voice hush from down the hallway as she checked on their little girl.
Ino was fast asleep in her crib, a platinum halo of wispy fine hairs splayed around her little head and her tiny pink mouth parted like a rosebud.
"Good night, my darlings," Sora whispered, even though neither of her children were awake to hear her.
Sweet dreams.)

Okay so I've been having thoughts about the time up until Shisui's death (specifically the hope au) and it's driving me insane. Anyways, do you ever think about how exhausted Shisui probably was mentally, emotionally, and physically? Like first off, where would he have even felt comfortable to sleep let alone allow himself to with everything going on? Like he's been distancing from his teammates, they've practically been avoiding each other from both sides, and Shisui found out a group of supposed "anbu" were following him that one time so the dorms are out. He hadn't accepted his room at the Yamanaka house as his yet and he wouldn't have wanted to be around Ino when he was so stressed- plus he would have spilled info to Inoichi whether he wanted to or not. The Uchiha compound was being watched and just not a great environment with everything going on, let alone him having to sleep in an empty house. The only person he could really talk to was his literal kid cousin he was always trying to protect so that's a no go- he was essentially cut off entirely from his support system while also having to repeatedly deal with his uncle, the clan elders, and Danzo. He was pretty much forced into a dangerous mission mindset with no breaks in a place he was supposed to be safe and able to rest and y'know /not/ deal with the world ending stress of trying to save both your clan and your village where even a small mistake could be fatal. Then! He gets betrayed by Danzo, who's supposed to be a village superior he should be able to trust! He gets attacked in his own village, all alone, has his eye stolen, gets poisoned, and all of that horrible stuff! Doesn't help that he has literal reality warping eye powers so losing his eye by a treasonous bloodline thief is terrifying!! With him being poisoned, possibly had his grandfather's eye used against him, missing one of his own eyes, probably in shock, terrified, and exhausted it's no wonder he wasn't exactly making great choices. Even if he didn't consciously think it- he was a tired, traumatized 19 year old who was extremely stressed and probably just wanted to get out of this situation. Also let's not forget that because he was still in his mission mindset, he was pretty much locked on to the goal of doing whatever it takes to protect his clan and village so he probably didn't even think about trying to get help from his teammates or sensei to /save his own life/ because he grew up prioritizing others (his cousin, his clan, his village, etc) over himself and that was even before he was cut off from his support system!! And even in his final moments he uses his own death as a tool!! Like I can't even be mad at him or think what he did was stupid because like- it's understandable why he did what he did even though I absolutely hate that it happened. How did Inoichi even let him out of his sight?? I could never. I want to wrap him up in a warm blanket and never let him go, y'know after i kill Danzo with my bare hands.
Honestly this ask just reaaaaally made me want to delve into Inoichi's POV, like what if Shisui is the puppy to his John Wick???? He just starts fucking dropping people and Danzo is like GET ME OUT OF HERE?!?!!
Glorious 👌
But anyway, Anon this ask hurted so good 🥹 owie, thanks for breaking our hearts all over again for the millionth time ❤️

Ever thought about Shisui as a Jonin-sensei? Not necessarily Team 7's sensei (I know a lot of people love to put him in place of Kakashi for some reason), just a Jonin-sensei in general. Of one of the other canon teams or of a team of OCs doesn't matter, just the idea
Hey Anon!
Shisui as a jounin sensei is absolutely the cutest and wholesomest and most amazing thing in the world 🥰❤️‍🔥
You just know he's gonna be like "right let's all go to the dentist and then have a movie night to recover!" And everyone is like "what the fuck are you doing???" And shisui is like "oh this is how inoichi treated me as his apprentice and he was really good at being a sensei so I'm living up to my role model!" And everyone is like "YOURE STILL UNAWARE YOU WERE ADOPTED????" 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Any and all team combinations with shisui will be amazing, canon teams or canon characters in new formations or OCs 🥹 but he will be so panicky because UMMMM he feels directly responsible for the death of his own team and genin sensei, like they activated his mangekyou, so the hurt comfort angst????? Delicious
