thinking about how magical it is that pretty much all of Plato’s most important works are dialogues and Socrates teaches people exclusively through conversation. and how books have this crazy special power of conversation too. Like when I read Plato, I am really having a conversation with Socrates.

And it’s so important that the Plato wrote dialogues instead of just like summarized Socratic doctrines or something like that. Because the experience of reading a dialogue is nothing like reading Aristotle or Aquinas or Kant. Like no shade against those other guys but when you read them, their writing can feel really monolithic, like it’s just a slab that will exist whether or not we take the time to read it. But the dialogues, in a much more immediate way, include the reader as an essential part of the story. because when we read Plato we really are part of the conversation.

When I first read Meno I got this copy from the library and someone in the margins wrote their own responses to Socrates’ questions (and they had some wack takes which was really funny) but that’s so magical!! That is exactly the magic of the dialogues because we really are invited to respond. And Socrates says and does so much that isn’t immediately clear that we’re compelled to work through the arguments just as much as the people he’s talking to.

and I think that this kind of inclusion is the most loving thing any author can do. Plato has so much love for humanity in general that he found a way to introduce Everyone in the World to Socrates. He had this great teacher, and he could have easily just dedicated a treatise or something to Socrates. But he actually managed to preserve Socrates so that this amazing ancient man has taught me, too. Like how lucky are we that thousands of years after his death, we can still be taught by the guy that taught Plato!! Ach I just love these boys
