14: “Stay with me.”

Sokka grins when he finds Zuko kneeling on a cushion, writing on the desk in front of him. "Hey, I've been looking for you. Do you want to help with dinner again?"

"Yeah, of course, I just need to finish this letter first," Zuko says, stopping for just a moment to give Sokka a smile.

Sokka hesitates, noticing something is slightly off in Zuko's expression. "Are you...who is the letter to?"

"I'm asking for a ship to come so I can return to the Fire Nation," Zuko says, attempting to sound casual.

Not home, never home, just the Fire Nation.

Sokka is suddenly finding it hard to breathe. "Oh. I didn't realize. Leaving so soon?"

He wasn't joking, but Zuko laughs. "I've been here for weeks, Sokka, I don't want to overstay my welcome."

Sokka stares at him. "So...what, you're just going back to the Fire Nation? Why?"

Zuko shrugs. "Where else would I go?"

And there's the elephant koi in the room. Zuko, no longer Fire Lord, no longer tied anywhere by political obligations, had just been visiting after spending months visiting Iroh. Now, he's going back to what is familiar to him, even if he doesn't want it. Sokka knew that his trip would probably come to an end, but the longer Zuko stayed, the more Sokka wondered if that had to be the case.

"You could stay here," Sokka finds himself saying, and Zuko looks at him, expression guarded when usually he's so open with Sokka.

"Here? In the Southern Water Tribe?" Zuko asks.

Sokka smiles. "Yeah. Stay with me."

Zuko mirrors his smile, then looks down at the parchment he had just been writing on. He crumples it up in his hand and tosses it over his shoulder. "Okay. I'll stay."

There’s just one thing--whatever’s going on in the alley seems very much not Dai Li related. At all.

For starters, he’s pretty sure he would have remembered if any of the Dai Li wore a giant, blue, metal mask over their entire face.

hmmmmm i mean as long as im writing retgmt that's always my #1 lol. And I've got a couple of one-shots planned for when the main thing is done and those are fun to work on too, even the angsty one (it's more hurt/comfort but. whew)

ive also been slowly working on the second part of alley cat blues quite a bit, and that's a fun one to think about :)

Zuko thinks about snowdrifts, penguin sledding, and bonfires. About strong arms, whispered secrets in the middle of the ocean, and deep blue eyes that sit on a handsome, freckled face. Something in him pulls, it both aches and comforts him, and he knows this is something that’s long overdue. He ignores the part of his brain that tells him he isn’t wanted, despite Chief Hakoda’s words. When Katara raises an eyebrow at his pause, he forces himself to relax and plasters a smile on his face.

“Absolutely,” he breathes out.

or: sokka is taking over for his father as chief. in a last ditch effort to get their heads out of their asses, katara & hakoda have convinced zuko to come down for his swearing in. they didn’t account for sokka and zuko’s absolute stupidity.

uhhh gaelic football when i was a kid, gymnastics (do you Play gymnastics) for longer when i was a kid, camogie when i was a tween for a few years. oh i did badminton for like a year. i lost a jersey i really liked at a badminton camp….. OH HORSE RIDING TOO i did that for years um i may be forgetting one but honestly if i am it was probably for such a short time that it’s irrelevant

probably their hair? or their voice? idk it depends what about the individual person is most striking to me i guess

both in moderation and sometimes at the same time

i can do fun eye makeup? not a particular talent but i think it looks good. and i have a knack for putting together cohesive outfits imho

When Eddie yawned, she did it unapologetically. Jaw cracked open to show all of her teeth, nose scrunched to one side. With her hair tied back (courtesy of a scrunchie left behind in Steve’s car from one of the other girls), Steve got a front row seat to the whole show, including the little sniff she always did right after. It was something he found stupidly endearing. His family, less so, if the way his Aunty Lauren was staring at them was anything to go off. He smiled politely and waved, catching Eddie’s attention from where she’d been squinting up at the chandelier.  When she saw him waving, she followed suit, a polite little finger waggle that spurred his aunty into motion.
