The problem with *some BL office dramas is they seem to think that I care about their business success.

Like let me give some examples:

We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd knew how much I as an audience member cared about both the company our boys worked for and the project they were working on. How much? Not much. Except when it relates to their romance. Zhou Shu Yi having to work with Gao Shi De again because he works for his dad's company and they're doing a merger. Classic forced proximity. Love it.

This is the shit I wanna see. Their romance. The company could crash and burn for all I care. All I know about their work is that they are in an office and making some kind of software. That's it.

Here's another example. Cherry Magic! They work somewhere that make pens and stationary. Sometimes they have to do lots of unexplained paperwork. Do I care about the details surrounding the pen company paperwork? No. I don't. They know this and respect my time by not having a character spend an episode walking me through the pen company audit paperwork.

When a character has a big project, it is brief and has a clear connection to the romance arc. In season 1 and 2, work project moments just create big "reasons we cannot be together" crisis moments to be overcome.

*Step By Step, on the other hand, forced me to sit through employee training sessions and about one full length boardroom meetings per episode about products and marketing campaigns. I felt as bored watching those scenes as I would have if I was actually a member of a marketing team sitting in on a meeting that could have been an email.

Apart from the meeting where they first decide to use Put, there's no clear romantic drama or stakes in many of those scenes. It's literally just business. I do not care about Forge, they were just a client, and yet that client's name is now burned into my brain. I do not care about Olive and Pearl (?) or how their karaoke night marketing is gonna be amazing because look we got Put in it again. In fact, get that guy out of my face! All I care about is our main characters and their romance. And yet I must sit through board meeting after board meeting after...

funniest shit i learned this week: absolutely obsessed about the way daddy sima fang vs daddy sun jian named their sons + the hypothetical relationships they had.

lets look at Sun Jian: He was born to a peasant father whos name was never even recorded in history, but he had high hopes for his sons and he named them accordingly:

Sun Ce, styled Bofu -- Ce means "strategy," Fu is a type of military token used to prove that a command has legitimate authority. very ironic the son named "strategy" is the hothead who rushes into things. Sun Quan, styled Zhongmou -- Quan means "right" e.g. "the right to rule", Mou means also strategy. this time it's appropriate, at least! Sun Yi, styled Shubi -- Yi means "to assist," Bi also means..."assist" I guess daddy was trying to get the message across "hey champ. ur like the 3rd son ur NEVER going to inherit. so just be good and help ur bros, ok?" Sun Kuang, styled Jizuo--Kuang means "to revive" as in "to revive the han dynasty." Zuo............also means "assist." (OK DAD. I GET THE MESSAGE. GOD.)

ALL their courtesy names ended in Da. No it wasn't common for the time. Their contemporaries were straight up roasting them for it, calling them the "Sima-Eight-Da" it gets better. you see the courtesy names Bo, Zhong, Shu ect? they're used to denote birth order going from eldest-> youngest. this is the fucking equivalent of naming your kids One Two Three Four Five... + tacking on a Da at the end. (Da means achieve/reach btw) im losing my fucking mind over the implications. Sun Jian the barely-educated, peasant-born, Mr "talk softly and carry a HUGE sword," is spending 7 hours a day on babynames.com in between kicking dong zhuo's ass, obsessing over each letter like a 13yo creating their first OC, being all "my precious baby boys are destined for greatness and they need the COOLEST names and COURTESY names to match." and sima fang is like [Ctr+ C] [Ctr + P], and in the end it's HIS ugly kid that ends up unifying china.

Shi De and Shu Yi from We Best Love. The way I was OBSSESED with Shu Yi and Shi De. Shi De was madly in love with Shu Yi and yet....sorta selfish with his feelings. I did find it HILARIOUS that Shi De decided to one-up Shu Yi their whole lives to remain relevant when he could've just tried being his friend. I did think it was the cutest shit that Shi De fake blackmailed Shu Yi to be his "Page boy" as he called it to take Shu Yi's mind off his broken heart. What annoyed me about Shi De is that he didn't trust in the strength of Shu Yi's feelings for him. And he let Shu Yi's dad talk him into fucking GHOSTING SHU YI FOR HALF A DECADE!

I adore Shu Yi because he's such an honest boy and he's so smart and so talented and so sweet and so fiery and so passionate. Love that he's not one to hide his feelings....even tho he thinks he is. He was so open and honest and I was on his side in s2. THEIR RECONCILIATION SCENE IN S2 IS PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVES FROM BOTH SERIE. WBL is one of those series I wrote meta for because I was just that into it. Anyways. Shu Yi and Shi De are my loves. I loved Shi De more in s1 and Shu Yi more in s2.

Chi Soo and Gi Tae from Long Time No See. UNDERRATED SHIP! Chi Soo was just a bullied orphan who kind of fell into the assassin life. He just wanted to be happy and found a nice creative outlet through online writing, I'm sure he never thought he would meet the love of his life that way. ALSO SPEAKING OF! THEIR FIRST MEETING???? CHI SOO IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE! He was just a soft man who also happened to be a trained killer. I love Gi Tae. Got to be the WORST infiltrator ever because HOW YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR TARGET!??? They were just so soft and sweet together and you could tell when the guilt started to get to Gi Tae. Their love scenes were so beautiful and I loved the lil dates they went on. I love how Gi Tae's sister immediately accepted Chi Soo. They built a lil family together.

Can I just say that their fight was one of my fave scenes? Chi Soo was giving it all he had and I love that we could see Gi Tae holding back because he didn't want to fight Chi Soo let alone hurt him. It broke my heart when Chi Soo realized and I'm glad Gi Tae followed him to try to talk it out. He didn't want the night to close without giving that man the full story and I loved it. Glad they made up. AND THE RESCUE SCENE WAS ALSO A PERSONAL FAVE. Chi Soo really did his big one to save his boyfriend. AND THE FAMILY PIC AT THE END??? I was obsessed with them too and rewatched Long Time No See everyday for like 2 months straight...highkey think I'm gonna rewatch.

(Spoilers) Look the emotional rollercoaster this episode is like Wen Kexing finally got his revenge and Ye Bayi is like just close down the ghost valley and we'll call it even and it's like yes!!!! No more bloodshed!!!! And everyone is having dinner together and Wen Kexing is literally having the best day of his life!!! But then Zhou Zishu is like dealing with all the turmoil and angst that WKX's little stunt put him through and that he's going to die in a few days but nobody knows and he doesn't want to bring down the mood and then there's heartbreaking scene where WKX is drunk and is so happy and cuddling ZZS and is like I'm so happy you're my soulmate and everything is great and we'll travel the world together this is amazing!!! And you can see the pain on ZZS's face because WKX doesn't KNOW!!!! And then there's the confrontation between Scorpion King and Zhao Jing which is !!!!!!!!!!!! And then they're preparing for Gu Xiang and Cao Weining's wedding!!!!! And it's so sweet because everyone is just so happy!!!! And like WKX is in full dad mode which is great. But it's just like an episode where the characters can just all love each other because there's no sign of immediate danger (well besides ZZS' stuff) but like it's so heartwarming and sad and tragic when you know what happens right after like !!!!!!!!!!!! RANDOM THOUGHTS: We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd ep. 6 (rewatch)

(These are my random thoughts from my rewatch on the 30th of March 2024)

Since my rewatches may contain spoilers, I’m putting my random thoughts after the “Read More” link.

This is the last episode of this season (and the whole series), and I’m ready to enjoy the great moments with Shu Yi and Shi De and the moments with Zhe Yu and Bing Wei.

The way Pei Shou Yi just hurled Zhen Xuan over his shoulder again. I don’t know why that is so funny to me.

Shu Yi’s dad finally being somewhat chill about Shu Yi being together with Shi De is great to see. There’s progress, at least.

It’s heartbreaking to see Zhen Xuan cry like that.

Shu Yi pushing Shi De into the pool after that fake crying will never not be funny to me.

Shi De pulling Shu Yi’s tie to get him close enough to kiss him, and then actually kiss him… This is the sole purpose of a tie.

Bing Wei proposing to Zhe Yu makes my heart full every time. And Bing Wei being nervous as hell is so adorable. If he only knew how whipped Zhe Yu is by him too, though.

And that’s the end of this season and the whole series. I loved it just as much this rewatch as I’ve done the other times. This is one of those series I can watch several times without getting bored, mainly because of the great chemistry between Shu Yi and Shi De, the great dialogue, and that it mixes heartfelt moments with the yearning and the drama in such a great way. I love this series so much.

i'm not reading any books rn, because i just got done with the song of achilles for the sixth time and i'm having feelings about it again so: paint smears on sunny days by snowshadowao3 which is teacher wei wuxian and single dad lan wangji, which is actually my kryptonite. i'm dead serious this is my favourite fic of all time. i read it all the time, and i'm in the middle of reading it again right now. it's tooth achingly sweet, and it feels like a warm hug in a fic. to sleep, perchance to dream by hyacinthssoul which is dean and pharm from until we meet again, but it's just so. so. good i can't describe it. it's not very long but it's a little fic that lingers in my mind when i read it and i would read 300k words from this author of dean being sweet on pharm like. i really truly would. you know i dreamed about you (before i saw you) by beelove which is a cute little magical au about yusuf and nicolo from the old guard! which is a fandom i was in for a long time and still hold dear to my heart. i decided to dive back into tog fics and found this gem in my bookmarks! i highly recommend, it's so cute.

Have you seen Joong PINE over Dunk? He's the best PINER I've ever seen. This was mostly a fluff watch but I enjoyed Joong's performance.

Well, this show was all over the place. I thoroughly enjoy time shenanigans in my shows so I stuck with it to the end, even if it ultimately made no sense. I have always thought Fluke Natouch was very talented though, and I found his performance here better than in Until We Meet Again, or Between Us. (He just "P'Dean"-ed all over the place and was too much of a blushing maiden for me).

I really hate Shu Yi’s homophobic dad. And I can also see that Shu Yi gets some of his bratty charm from him. I suspect the series is trying to make me like him and I’m not sure what I think about that.

But Shu Yi is truly hurt… he’s so different than in his almost playful anger from before. The rage and passion is gone; he just shuts down. 💔

I am once again having thoughts about Blueming, and how these "perfect boys" feel they have to solve every problem themselves, and in the process alienate the one they love. And good on their impulsive, emotionally reactive [ex/future] boyfriends for calling them on their shit.

Hello since I saw you were rating wish list for DW hope its oke for me to share mine and ask for your thoughts thanks a lot and feel free to ask me my reasoning for them.

Wei: Cao Hong, Cao Zhen (two very important commanders for cao cao), Zhang Xiu (another top cao commander would also help flesh out Jia xu as they were very close historically), Zhong Yao (Zhong Huis dad a very early supporter of cao cao eventually became a top minister extremely interesting guy)

For Wu:

Zhuge Jin, Zhuge Ke ( I don’t think I need to justify it lol), He Qi (very important and skilled general who really helped Sun Quan hold his southern territories also his dw blast design makes him look like wu’s version of Zhang He which i like), Zhang Zhao (was pretty much Sun Quans father figure and closest minister)

Shu (my favorite):

Honestly many, I would even consider removing some of the fictional characters because out of those the only one i like and feel contributes anything to the story is Guan Suo. Anyways

Liao Hua (do I even need to say why lol), Wang Ping (Top general was able to overcome a learning disability and rise to the top), Fei Yi (would really help add an interesting dynamic to Jiang Wei), Zhang Yi or Ma Zhong (either would help fill out with another disciplined warrior) maybe Zhuge Zhan but he comes in quite late.

My least favorite sorry Jin:

Another Sima (so many talented Sima’s lol) my personal choice would be Sima Yi’s brother, Sima Fu (very important minister I think he became imperial chancellor but more loyal to Wei than jin could provide some nice tension with his relatives)

Yang Hu (very important Jin figure although most of his achievements came late in the period, really this is my major beef with Jin) or maybe Hu Lie for similar reasons.

Other:

One of the Yuan Brothers either Shang or Tan would add a nice bit of drama and excitement to Cao Cao’s northern conquest

Liu Biao (super important figure of the period involved with nearly every important faction and character)

Han Sui (really interesting warlord and had a long life) if they decide to go the novel route a one handed moveset would be interesting as well

One of the bandit factions leaders; i like what total war did with the bandit Zhang yan and the bandit queen. It be cool if koei could try something similar good suggestions imo would be Zhang Yan, Yang Feng, or Zang Ba

Cao Hong was very important and might be a good foil for some of the established members of the family, presenting a new dimension to their interactions. Cao Zhen is also hugely important and could be a great foil for Cao Pi and Cao Xiu; showing how important he was also makes it easier for people to understand why his son was given so much authority after Cao Rui's death. Zhong Yao is one of the most important people of the era and while the Wei faction is pretty heavy with tacticians at this point, there's always room for someone of his accomplishments. Zhang Xiu is certainly one of the people I'd love to see. Great for Jia Xu as a character and he can add some muscle to some battles that are otherwise pretty lacking in significant enemies.

Zhuge Jin and Zhuge Ke don't need to be justified, you're absolutely right. That's all pretty obvious. He Qi is pretty significant (arguably one of the most significant people of the era since his efforts to settle the Han population in southern China and bring the region under Han control had long-lasting effects) and pretty unique. I wouldn't be upset about that. Zhang Zhao also goes without saying. He has every quality I'd look for in a new character; long career, close personal relationships to characters who need them, many historical accomplishments, unique personality, etc.

Liao Hua is a pretty common choice. He has longevity on his side (always good but especially for that faction since so many major people all died around the same time) and enough accomplishments to his credit to justify it. Yi is, of course, one of my favorites. It'd be great to have him to represent the leadership between Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei and their different styles, and his assassination is a huge narrative beat that can really set up Shu's final act. Wang Ping and Ma Zhong were commanders whose accomplishments alone justify their inclusion, in addition to their unique personality traits and history. Zhuge Zhan has potential to be a very intersting character, although I doubt they'd have the guts to go all out with it and have him be part of the court's corruption. Zhang Yi (Junsi) would be an unexpected choice but not totally useless. For Zhang Yi (Bogong), I'd say the same things I said about Liao Hua. And for Zhang Yi (Boqi; often called Zhang Ni), the same as Wang Ping and Ma Zhong.

There are alot of Sima family members who would be decend additions. I think Sima Fu is one of the best, since he was perhaps the most important and had such a lengthy career; he could also really bring out some aspects of his relatives we don't currently see. I think Yang Hu is highly overrated; Hu Lie is pretty great though. He and his brother Hu Fen, along with their father Hu Zun, are all good choices IMO.

The Yuan family could always use a bit more meat to it; I think which members are most useful to have depends on how you choose to expand their tale. I do think Yuan Tan is particularly important, though, given his achievements under his father.

Liu Biao needs no justification. Han Sui is an interesting choice but one that I like.

I can see the merit in including someone to represent one of the major bandit factions of the time, though I'm not sure exactly who I'd cuse. Of the ones you listed, probably Zang Ba since he has much more going on than the others.

Sorry for the delay, I've been busy writing like crazy for two things: a project, and my books. It's been wild.

Writing is a hobby of mine but sometimes it feels like I have to finish things up before moving on and, gods, I have so many things to finish.

And that he's trying to be mature and taking this event as something that time will keep as an old memory instead of a painful one.

A guy invites them over to a party and the only things these two got from that interaction were "competition" and "good memories before graduation".

And of course, they took it in completely different directions

Shi De encourgaes to go and when Shu Yi hesitates, he tells him that he thought he was over it.

I mean, that's the thing, he's reached the state of acceptance, but that doesn't mean it's not gonna hurt from time to time. And that's the key: time. Time to sort out his feelings, and to also let other feelings rest.

Anygays, Shu Yi is about to leave when he remembers that he's just like me and gets scared easily, and it's night and the school is scary and "why did I want to do this again? Oh, yeah, my gay ass rivalry".

He turns to serch for Shi De and to keep some of his pride by inviting him to go first.

Shi De: "I'm scared of ghosts" Bruh

Option 2: he's really scared of ghosts and doesn't know whether to follow Shu Yi or stay frozen and wait for help. OR, and hear me out, Option 1: he's a liar and just made up that as an excuse to create the romantic scenario I was talking about.

It's still a nice gesture because when someone else is scared it does give you more confidence since you're not the only one, and it also gives you a reason to actually feel more confident since you would want to protect that person if you like them on a certain level.

Shi De keeps being all "nuuu, I don't wanna go" and Shu Yi keeps trying to reasure him that he won't slow him down.

Another good episode. I will say, I enjoyed more than the previous two, and I like the other two. It's just that this felt more like personal progress for both of them and like they're reaching that place, if you know what I mean.

They have a chance at happiness, I know it. I still feel that they'll get through some more angst first.
