ueueue with chapter 33 out, I think about how buggy felt like he had to work his ass off in order to prove himself with the Rogers Pirates, and years (YEARS!!!) of him being in this ship, he's only gotten the Love of his Captain, Master Rayleigh, and Shanks. All 14/15 years of living with the crew, and only three people love him for who he is.

And yet, in merely 3 years, Buggy's got the love and respect of a little town off the East Blue, and these people love him for who he is. He's Buggy, a friend, protector, leader, and hero, but they also know him for who he is. Snark and nasty attitude and all, and they still regard him as a part of their town.

I'm happy for Buggy that he's finally getting that love from his community as he deserves, but something about how he finally understood how he's needed makes me sad. Buggy knows that he's about to get another son, and his future son NEEDS him to love him, as he doesn't want another child to grow up chasing for scraps of the love that he needs. Buggy still relates his self-worth to his son. Buggy's still not getting that people love him for who he is, and not because he can do things or because he's supposed to do what is expected of him.

This will be a learning experience for him, but when the author says it's a slow burn angst, oh they totally mean it.

And on theme with the chapter, I offer five memes (and because it is happy Luffy day, and he's about to be introduced in the story!!)

there’s this analysis I found on japanese twitter that I like, which is that the current four emperors symbolize the four guardians of cardinal directions from chinese mythology.

each creature represents a different color and element, and the type advantages would go like this: Blackbeard(Turtle/Water)> Shanks(Phoenix/Fire)> Luffy(White Tiger/Metal)> Buggy(Dragon/Wood)

the type advantages correspond to events in the manga if we look at it like this:

(Blackbeard scarred Shanks)->(Shanks influenced Luffy)->(Luffy beat Buggy in Orange Town)

which means the next step would be for Buggy to best Blackbeard in some way? because who else could best a sneak and a cheat like Blackbeard (since Shanks and Luffy are both kinda too honest for him) if not the guy who knows how to think exactly the same way as him?

on top of that it’s worth noting that the ones who don’t have any type advantages over each other (Blackbeard and Luffy)(Shanks and Buggy) have so far avoided a real confrontation and been treated as ‘equals’ on similar journeys.

What’s your favourite thing about shuggy cross guild and mishanks? Why you ship them?

what i like most about those ships is BUGGY i love teasing and tormenting and driving that clown up the wall! I guess i get the most out of it with Shanks because of their past and unresolved tensions hahah... also i love making myself feel bad over fictional characters and they give me that good pain! They make me laugh but also grind my teeth in agony...

As for cross guild, well, it was the thing that motivated me to pick up op again (i was stuck at fishman island for a few years), i needed to see what the fuck was that combination of characters teaming up all about!? And what do u kno...it was about tormenting Buggy...which i love to see... and also about giving him the spotlight he deserves (even if it was the result of failing upwards one too many times but i believe in his odd charisma) and the means to chase his dreams again! I really just like Buggy ok!! Cross guild is hilarious as a very dysfunctional polycule - but really, while Buggy is their punching bag (the violence is very much played for laughs and i genuinely feel bad for him but as i said i like pain) he also stood up for what he believed in when it mattered and challenged croc and hawk's pessimistic/realistic outlook on what it means to be a pirate.

for the record I can't say i actively ship mishanks really, honestly i didn't care about them as characters enough (i swear i care about them a little bit more now) for me to get invested in their relationship. Although i can see them having this fling in their youth which Shanks fumbled too but unlike Buggy, Mihawk has standards and, as my friend put it, deserves someone who owns more than two pairs of pants. Which brings me to crochawk which you did not ask about but i just want to elaborate on that too. At first i didn't pay their dynamic too much attention because of my lack of interest in Mihawk (again, sorry) but slowly warmed up to it, they both have a distrust in others and i think they'd be very good at giving each other the personal space they need while also being fucking weird about forming a genuine bond because idk if they have ever had a normal and balanced relationship in their life (i also ship dofuwani so yeah let's just throw one more ex to the mix).

Ask and you shall receive c: I didn’t know if my headcanons would be very interesting, so I’m glad to hear you enjoy it.

I started this out thinking hmm do I even have any more headcanons, but now I’ve written all this…

Sometimes I imagine them as cis, but sometimes I like to headcanon them as trans. Shanks as a transman, Buggy as nonbinary or trans or genderfluid or like a drag queen. However they are, they’re hanging with Ivankov and the rest of queer community because they just fit there.

Buggy used to be insecure about his hair and hid it under a beanie. He used to want a more ‘normal’ hair color like the other crewmembers.

Shanks is the better liar when he wants to be. He doesn’t lie as often, but he’s better at controlling and hiding his emotions.

Buggy first became interested in the circus by seeing street performers as a kid, and somehow felt the circus lights calling out to him. His heart longs for the stage, to be at the center of attention before a huge crowd. But he also hates being made fun of and isn’t very good at dealing with criticism. He became inspired to include circus techniques and magician’s tricks in his fighting style, light and airy and impossible to predict.

Buggy didn’t come up with being called the clown, the Marines did. He just begrudgingly went with it.

Shanks is a lot more touchy-feely. He likes casually having an arm around Buggy, having their thighs touching, resting his head on his shoulder. Buggy is generally fine with it in front of people he knows, but he’s not one for overly public displays of affection. He has a reputation to uphold.

After Buggy got his powers, whenever he used to get annoyed or mad at Shanks, he’d detach his body and float away where Shanks couldn’t reach him.

Buggy knows sign language, because it’s useful for subtle communication and even better when you’re someone who can detach their hands.

Shanks used to show his affection by teasing Buggy a lot, who’d take it the wrong way and thought Shanks was just being an ass for no reason to Buggy. It’s classic pigtail-pulling behavior.

Buggy was real upset about not being able to swim anymore, so Shanks promised to take Buggy out into the water whenever he felt like it, so he could experience the seas without fear of drowning.

One of Shanks’ favorite foods is lobster, which is hard for him to eat unless someone cracks open the shell for him. Buggy is always the one who unshells it for him.

Shanks is a morning person, Buggy is more of a night owl who consumes multiple cups of coffee to function.

Shanks doesn’t like sleeping by himself so he shares sleeping quarters with the crew. After Elegia, he started getting nightmares more frequently. Sleeping with a room full of people he can trust helps put him at ease.

When Shanks can’t sleep, he’ll drink a lot of alcohol until he just knocks himself out.

Same as Luffy, Buggy also has the special ability to turn people into allies, just in a slightly different way.

All the Red-Haired Pirates already know about Buggy because of Shanks’ tendency to ramble while he’s drunk. At first they expected Buggy to be this exotic beauty, they were shocked when they found out the love of Shanks’ life was a literal clown. But then again, Shanks always had…questionable tastes, so they should have expected it.

Shanks really loves Buggy’s red lipstick. He especially loves it when Buggy leaves red lipstick marks on his clothes and skin. Buggy does it as a way of staking his claim.

Despite his good looks, Shanks is bad at posing for photos. He’s not the type to try and utilize his looks, so he’s more awkward in photos than in real life. Buggy is the one who knows how to work the camera and loves showing off in front of it.

Shanks definitely isn’t the type to whine or complain about pointless things…except he will with Buggy, just as a way to get his attention or be pampered. Shanks turns into a big, immature baby around Buggy, but it’s because he feels comfortable enough to do so.

Shanks likes summer islands, Buggy prefers winter islands (his nose gets sunburned easily lol)

They used to swap clothes a lot when they were kids. As adults they don’t do it that much anymore, but when they do, usually it’s Buggy stealing Shanks’ things.

Shanks wears the same damn outfit all the time unless someone forces him into something else (usually it’s Buggy who does). Shanks also sleeps naked or just in his underwear most of the time.

Buggy trains Uta in the circus trade and teaches her tricks so she can include them in her performances. The Buggy Pirates and Uta do collaborations on the stage. It’s like an idol concert meets Cirque du Soleil and the result is mind-blowing. Shanks is not talented enough in that area to be an entertainer, but he is their biggest fan.

ooo thats a really good question ive never really thought about that. im not gonna properly rank them as much as ramble their vague order bc im pretty neutral to one piece ships

at the top is namivivi because I love nami and I miss vivi so so much and I genuinely think they would work well together. they have a lot in common and care about each other so much and I really want vivi to reunite with nami+the rest of the straw hats

I'd say I seek out the most extra content about zosan bc they have a fun dynamic that has a lot of potential to explore. A good balance of comedy and room for angst

frobin ofc because theyre married duh and of all the ships they could be revealed to have been together the whole time and I would not question it. they both influenced each other in the decision to join/rejoin the crew and they just /get/ each other after enies lobby I adore them

I love zolu but I'm kinda picky about how I perceive them. I ship them in a more qpr way and a lot of the zolu content on here I don't fully click with so that one I mainly vibe with by myself in a vacuum

as a rule I pretty much ship nami and any of the women she bonded with during her travels bc im a lesbian nami truther but I especially like her and tashigi because I live for the drama

sometimes ill randomly fall into a wormhole where I reblog a bunch of content for zokiku or shuggy or something depending on my mood and what sparked my sudden interest

im kinda basic with my one piece ships tbh im open for whatever. I enjoy a lot of shipping content while simultaneously wouldn't want any of them together in the canon storyline bc they already have so much love for each other and such strong relationships I don't need to change a thing... they can coexist <3

I don’t normally post about books I’ve read, especially if they’re not already wildly popular with a big fandom, but I just finished “Shuggie Bain” by Douglas Stuart and my heart—

It’s set in 1980s/90s Glasgow, centered around an alcoholic mother and her three children, but specifically on Shuggie, the youngest of them. Everuone always says there’s something “no right about him” which is just code for obviously gay. A lot of it is based on the author’s actual life, and it was just done really well.

I did have to mark A LOT of trigger warnings though, mainly for SA, some abuse, child neglect, and a lot of homophobic language, so if you were going to read it then I would recommend proceeding with caution. I wouldn’t mind posting a list of the pages I marked for triggers if anyone did want to read it but just wanted to be able to avoid those parts.

But other than that, I really did love the book. Maybe because it was accurate to growing up in council estates in Scotland, especially with an alcoholic mother.

Douglas Stuart also has another book that just came out called “Young Mungo” which is apparently gay Romeo and Juliet set in Glasgow, so I’m definitely getting that when I can.
