Tumblr media
You lay awake alone on the plush mattress that's not your own. Morning light filtering through the curtains, shining warmth right on your cheek. Your hand roaming around the soft fur of the blanket as the clock ticks slowly to eight. Eyes above the detailed swirling patterns on the bed's canopy, mind drifting back to the home you've left just a few days ago.
Tick.
Taking the ad for this house-sitting gig went better than you thought it would be. Thinking the house you would be watching over will just be a regular house in an urban subdivision. Not an estate full of ancient history situated in the middle of nowhere with only an elderly dog as a companion.
Tock.
At least it's better than your dead end job that makes you feel your soul is getting sucked with every hour you stay on the eighties musky carpeted floors, tapping away your entire life on the grainy screen of the corporate issued computer. The pay's good, better than what you were getting before anyway, even though it's only five months of house sitting it's way above your salary grade. You thank whatever entity out there that blew over the newspaper that literally landed on your lap while waiting for the bus stop, the 'help wanted' page open and glaring right at you. You only wish the job's longer though.
Tick.
The house being nice is an understatement, all oak and narra floors, fixtures and furniture made of the same wood. No sign of modernity in the entire estate. Even the kitchen is in an old style, well except for the coffee maker and microwave. Every hall and wall is covered in oil paintings, portraits of people dressed in old garb keep watch of your every move. The house creaks and shrieks during the late hours of the cold autumn night, always prompting you to keep your eyes tightly closed in an attempt to tamp down your curiosity.
Tock.
It's secluded enough that the air here feels crisp and cleaner than in the city. Trees whisper in the wind, moss clinging to its trunks. You suspect the house is as old as the woods that surround it. With vines curled and looped around the house's exterior and curved stained glass windows decorate its walls. Mudwood Manor they call it for every time it rains, mud gathers around the estate, threatening to swallow you like quick sand.
Chime!
The old grandfather clock's hand reaches eight, the sound echoes around the large room you've settled in. With an exhale, you reluctantly sit up, feet cold from the icy floor. Yawning, you wipe the sleep off your face, bones crying out in protest.
Lumbering your way through the usual morning routine, you change out of your pajamas even though no one else would see you in it, you still wear your usual day clothes, always feeling like you have to dress appropriately in this opulent house. If jeans and a jumper is considered appropriate in the massive estate.
The bathroom is no different than the rest of the house. With the large stark white bathtub in the middle of its tiled floors, twin sinks covered in dark marble, golden faucets squeak open as you turn the knob to brush your teeth. The entire bathroom is as big as your flat back in the city, you scoff at the extravagance of it all.
You like to think the owner of the place fits well with the manor, as eccentric and elegant as their home– all pearls and gold rings, silk and cashmere on their body. But alas you've never met him or them personally, only talking details on the telephone, his gruff voice vibrating against the receiver. They leave the key under the large mat after you've driven three hours to get there. The only clue you have of them actually existing is the instructions they've left you. The note now pinned on the fridge stocked full of food that could last you the entire five months, not to mention the large pantry that could feed an entire village.
You've got everything you'll ever need to survive five months alone. The thought scares you for a bit, but with the silence, fresh air and an entire library of books that you've never thought you could read in your lifetime, the loneliness isn't all bad, the place calms you down; if not for the bouts of sadness, you could see this place as your home for the time being.
The old border collie waits for you in the kitchen, mismatched eyes staring at your form, her tongue lolling on the side, greeting you with what you see as a smile.
"Morning, old Nellie" you greet back with a quick pet on her fluffy head, taking the time to scratch behind her ears. She wags her tail happily, while her eyes are closed in content. You've decided to talk from time to time so that you don't lose your voice, which Nellie appreciates the chatter.
You feed Nellie her breakfast first before fixing one yourself. She eats it in glee. The instructions written in neat cursive jumps at you every morning before opening the fridge.
You can't help but read it again.
1. Do not let anyone in.
You thought that was reasonable enough, it's not your place to invite people in here anyway.
2. Do not wipe the salt line on the doors and windows.
Now that's weird, you've always thought, but to each their own. The salt probably helps with keeping out the smell or rodents. Right?
3. The house is old, the sounds at night are from the metal pipes and scaffolding. Nothing to worry about.
Creepy, it's not like the place needs an extra creep factor added in it.
4. Feed Nellie three times a day without fail. Take her on walks around the estate every morning and before the sun sets.
That's alright, taking care of pets was part of the deal anyway. And it doesn't hurt that Nellie's a good dog to hang around with.
5. Do not in any circumstance go to the woods.
6. Wear the necklace at all times.
Your eyes drift over to the simple circular metal necklace sitting on the counter top, scoffing, you chose not to wear it just because an eccentric millionaire tells you to.
7. Only eat and drink the food I have provided.
You don't think you want to meet the owners now with how creepy they are just based on his instructions. Possessive much?
8. Be wary.
A shiver runs down your spine by just reading those two words.
You shake it off, opening the fridge, nothing piques
your interest this morning. Huffing, you have a hankering for fresh bread, alas you've eaten the last loaf yesterday. The strawberry jam inside the fridge mocks you. You recall on your drive to the manor you've passed by a small village, you're sure the place has a bakery or even a café in it. You crave a different scenery, and to use your voice other than for talking to Nellie.
Turning around, you put your hands on your hips, smiling at your companion who licks at the last bit of food in her bowl.
"What do you say for a stroll, Nellie?" She tilts her head in question, ears perking up, tail wagging excitedly.
You've never felt more isolated from civilization while walking towards the village, no houses run along the bumpy road, just miles and miles of trees with its aging wood, wild violets swaying around its trunks. The tall grass makes it hard to see the path. Mist blanketing and moistening the soil.
The walk was a lot longer than you thought it would be, now you're absolutely starving after walking for almost an hour. Nellie wasn't complaining though, for an older dog she seems to have so much energy in her. The village has clearly seen history, with its cobblestone streets, iron lampposts and ancient bricks. The fog thickens, blanketing the roofs of the village like marshmallow fluff.
You tie her leash around a lamp post, petting her fluffy head, you instruct her to sit and stay. She obliges, staring happily at you through her blue and brown eyes.
"Good girl, I'll be back in a flash" you make a mental note of buying her a treat for being such a good sport while you drag her from the manor.
Entering the shop, the bells chime signaling your arrival. Freshly baked bread wafts your senses as various meat is on display over at the counter, waiting for your perusal. You smell the soup of the day, judging by the aroma, you deduce it being butter squash soup, your stomach rumbles at the thought.
The modest shop has quite a few people in it. They chatter amongst their friends whilst eating breakfast and drinking their morning tea. Another patron enters behind you, she greets everyone by name, while the others immediately greet her the same. Well, except for a group of strangers sitting at the far end, they pay her no mind at all. It's a small village, you never doubted for a second that everyone would know every person that lives here. You've anticipated it actually, so used to being alienated from the crowd, you haven't noticed the old woman beckoning you over with a smile.
"Bonnie?" She calls for the third time.
"Oh! Sorry, I was thinking what to order" you move closer to the counter, the chill from the cold cuts display seeps through your jumper.
"You're the new caretaker at the old manor I presume?" She grins sweetly, showing her smile lines around her lips.
"House-sitter, I'm only here for five months" you're wary about telling her vital information, but she's an old woman. What's the harm in telling her that?
"Oh, I see he's going for a quick business trip this time. He would usually take an entire year away, y'know" her thick accent makes it hard for you to understand some of her words. Nonetheless, you don't miss the vital information about your mysterious employer. "But I don't gossip" she chuckles, "what will it be, deary?"
"You know Mr. O'hara, the owner?"
"Aye, known him since he was a lad. Good kid he was." She shakes her head. "There I go gossiping again, what are you havin'?"
You want more answers to feed your curiosity, but you don't want to pester the poor woman. "A BLT with cheese if you have them, lightly toasted and some of the soup, please." she nods, heading over to her station to prepare your sandwich when an older man chides in your conversation.
"Oh please, Orla y'know stopping yourself from gossiping just hurts you more" he laughs from his belly, white beard bouncing as he guffaws with his friends sitting him with.
"This" Orla, gestures from you to her. "Was a private conversation, where's your manners?"
"Don't know where I last put it!" He laughs again, shaking the wooden table in front of him. "Miss, let me guess, O'hara gave you those crazy rules?"
You perk up at the mention of the list. "Yeah, he did. How'd you know?"
He shrugs while the other patrons listen in, "he does the same thing to his other caretakers, there's a 'be wary' one, right?"
"Yes, it's really creepy"
The old woman pipes up, talking over her shoulder as she slices your sandwich. "It's a necessary evil after what happened to his daughter"
"What happened to his daughter?" You ask with trepidation.
"Don't tell me you actually believe that, old woman?" The older man argues back.
"Believe what?" You feel like there's an inside joke you keep missing.
"She was taken by them." Orla, turns around with your soup packed in a tupperware. You look at her questioningly.
"Bullshit if you ask me" the old man mumbles behind his mug. He sees your confused look, "she's talking about the fae" you thank him with a nod.
"It's true!" She wraps your sandwich inside foil, carefully putting it inside the paper bag. "There's no logical answer on where she is! Now it's just O'Hara in that massive estate."
"Kid just ran away, that's all!" Another older man argues back.
"Pssh," Orla swats him away with her hand, he turns away with a scoff. She turns back towards you, ringing your order up in the cashier. "Just do what his list says and you'll be fine" she says it like a warning to never stray far from the rules.
"Why do you think it's the fae?" You give her the payment she needs.
Humming, she clicks her tongue. "Just know it's them."
"Okay, um thank you" drifting away, she holds your arm back, taking your attention again.
Orla looks at you with wide eyes. "You know about them, yes?"
"Yes, like don't eat their food or you'll get stuck or don't give them your name or say thank you. I've heard the folk stories"
"Not just a story. The wood sings and they crave an audience." she lets go of your arm, your breath hitching, goosebumps appear on your skin.
You shake the thought, or try to at least.
The door chimes as you leave. Nellie lays on the pavement, tail wagging as she sees you come back to her side.
"Hi, got you something" she stands up, barking at you in excitement. "Okay, okay, here" Chuckling, you take a slice of bacon from your sandwich, giving it to her.
Nellie carefully takes it from your hand without biting your fingers, she chews happily.
"Good?" You scratch behind her fluffy ear. "Let's go back" untying her leash, you juggle the sandwich and her lead with your hands. The horror stories you've been told in your youth echoes in your mind, as your soft footfalls on the moist pavement. Wind rushes past you, pushing you back towards the manor.
Arriving inside the gates of Mudwood Manor, you gaze at the large brick building. It casts a shadow over you, its stature imposing. Fading bricks and trellises crawling with overgrown vines that's starting to wither and turn dark with bits of oranges and red still clinging to its last life. The large red door of the main entrance adds to your uneasiness. You attribute the fear from what the deli owner told you, the woods don't look much better. Tall trees with leaves so thick it blocks sunlight from hitting the undergrowth. From where you're standing, darkness seems to prevail inside. The thick fog added to the eeriness of the scene. It drapes over the treeline like curtains, swirling smoke falling down to the tips of your shoes, hiding something behind you can't quite see.
Just staring from the woodland edge gives you a sense of belonging with every second you stand idle. You have no idea why this feeling encapsulates you. The wind tries to push you towards the dark, flashes of autumn colored leaves swirl past. Eyelashes fluttering in the wind, your lips part as you listen to the flora dancing in the wind, as if it beckons you over. Daring you to cross the edge.
You wake up from the trance as Nellie growls at a squirrel taunting her from the ground. She pulls at her leash, the rope taut, your hand aches at the burn. You let go of the paper bag, half eaten soup spills over the grass, now holding the leash with both hands, you struggle to control the border collie.
"Nellie, calm down!" You yelp in pain when Nellie lunges, escaping your hold. The rope leaves angry marks on your palms, skin aching from the piercing pain. Nellie runs, following the grey squirrel into the woods. You can hear her barks fading in the distance. "Nellie! Come back!" You yell but it's futile as the old dog disappears from view.
"Fuck!" Without thinking, you run after her, legs carrying you further into the thick trees. The fog parts, opening the way. Eyes roaming the moss covered soil for her footprints. "Nellie!"
You're gonna lose your job, the thought makes you run faster. Tripping on a rock, you land on your already injured hand, dirt and grime sticking to the angry gashes, blood mixing with soil. Ignoring the pain, you push through the thicket.
Running, muscles aching, there's a stitch on your side as you stop to catch your breath. Hands on your thighs, you inhale and exhale. Nellie's footprints are barely visible under all the green and orange. Standing to your full height, your heart thumping like a drum under your ribcage. Eyes widening at the darkness that envelopes you, whirling around, fear overtakes your entire being.
You're lost.
Everywhere you look, identical trees fill your vision, cold seeping into your bones, smoke escapes your parted lips. Fingers turning stiff, you turn around when you hear Nellie's familiar bark.
"Nellie! Come here, girl!" You clap your hands to get her attention. "Nellie!"
Another bark echoes out in the dark, with only bits of sunlight filtering through the thicket, you let your other senses guide you to the sound. Speed walking, dry leaves crunch under your shoes, you call out to Nellie again. Narrowly avoiding a tree root protruding from the ground, you step over it so you don't land face first into the moist soil.
You stop when silence permeates the woods again. Standing still, a ring of mushrooms at your feet, you breathe heavily. "Nellie!" Frustrated, you yell again.
Instinctively stepping past a mushroom, you move your neck around, eyes roaming, looking for her white and black fur. Your palms land to your clammy forehead, wincing when you graze your injury.
"Fuck!" You stop circling around when the woods seem to expand right in front of your eyes, moving, flinging away, adding to the acres of wooded land. Vision focusing and unfocusing as the expanse extends further away. Fear once again blankets your nerves. Your mind claws at you to keep running.
"Lost?" A deep voice asks behind you. Alluring, tempting you to answer back.
Your blood suddenly runs cold. Primal fear makes your heart leap out of your chest.
Light suddenly appears behind you, your shadow gets taller and taller until it finally leaves you. Alone, you don't dare look behind you. The hair on the back of your neck stands up despite the warmth radiating from behind. Trepidation howls inside you.
Blood rushes in your ears, knuckles tighten, nails digging into skin as crimson drips on the tall grass below.
Swallowing the lump in your throat, curiosity wins over you.
You dare look behind.

Worldbuilding: Where Do You Want?
If you had a fresh new Earthlike planet to claim, what part of it would you want, and why?
As someone with multiple food allergies and a love of fresh fruit, I’d want the bits that gave me a maximum chance of things I like to eat. So - hopefully a good north to south expanse, allowing for foods from the tropical to the not-so-much.
On an ocean or river of both for fish and other seafood, especially if we can import kelp and seaweed to grow, or take advantage of a local equivalent. Near some kind of pasturage for meat; though in a pinch there’s at least one breed of sheep that can live on seawrack with little or no grazing. Deserts, dry inland areas, and frozen tundras are not my thing. Too hot, too cold, too dry. I like air that if it’s hot you can chew it, or cut it with a knife.
There’s a second reason you’d want places to grow food. Presume your colony is still in touch with the rest of the galaxy. What are you going to trade?
Keep in mind that whatever it is, it has to be worth shipping out of a gravity well. That narrows the options. Gold, diamonds, platinum? All stuff you can mine out of asteroids and not have to lift from a well. A new colony probably also won’t have a factory set up for, say precision parts not easy to get elsewhere in the galaxy. Those would likely also be more profitably made in orbital colonies and asteroid belts.
What your planet will have? Specialty organic products.
Seriously, look up terroir, and all the snits wine and whisky makers get into trying to get exactly the right results from grain, grapes, soil, and weather. High class chefs will swear by fruit from this orchard, tomatoes from that valley, fish caught off one particular coast.
In a huge galaxy, life is rare. The products of life, even more so. Amber, coral, pearls; silk, cashmere, byssal threads. All of these we can simulate, but there will always be people who want the real thing.
Want it enough to get it transported across the galaxy? Absolutely. What do you think wealth and power is for?
Pick your planetary settlements appropriately. And keep a watchful eye on galactic trends. Sometimes people try to corner the market the old-fashioned way. You know; bribery, violence, lawyers.
And that can give you all kinds of interesting plots....

What are your thoughts on Hermès?
I don’t really think that Hermès is the pinnacle of the fashion hierarchy that a lot of people make them out to be, and it’s not the last word in class anymore, either—though whether it ever really was is still debatable. I think they’ve damaged their own image through pure greed, and they’ve really shot themselves in the foot. I don’t have any real loyalty to the brand, I don’t think that it demonstrates the highest level of quality in the luxury world, and I don’t think that it’s really worth its price tag. I also vehemently hate their sales and marketing tactics, for what it’s worth.
Hermès fans will tell you that the brand started as a saddle maker, and this is quite true, but if you were to ask anyone who knew something about equestrianism, they’d tell you that today’s Hermès saddles are decidedly mid. They’re fine, but for handmade luxury saddles at an eyewatering price point, there are much better options out there these days, and I don’t know any serious horse enthusiast with a modern Hermès saddle. Hermès draws on its equestrian roots for its theme and design, but I think it’s sad and not a great sign that they haven’t been able to actually follow through and maintain their heritage and standing at the top of their original industry. The best brands, in my opinion, are those who pride themselves on their heritage first and foremost, but it feels as though when it comes to Hermès, the equestrianism is a gimmick and a hollow nod to the past, not their continuous pride and joy.
I have a few pieces from Hermès that I like: I have a very cute cashmere beret from an older collection, a Birkin handed down to me by my soon-to-be mother-in-law, a couple of pairs of shoes, and a modest collection of their silk scarves. There are also a couple of pieces I’d like to add to my collection, but I’m in no hurry and frankly, I don’t like the brand anywhere near enough to simper for it. The quality is, undeniably, very good, but I can’t say that it’s any better than pieces I have from other, smaller brands. I also think that their design team occupy a very strange space between wanting to stay classic and wanting to experiment, and they don’t always hit the mark; I’ve never seen an item of clothing from Hermès that appealed to me, and their special edition leather bags are often hideous (I’m not sorry; someone should say it). I like their silks best, I think that’s where the brand really shines, but I hate that I almost always receive a nasty look from sales assistants when I go into the store looking to “only” buy a new scarf, or a tie for my fiancé.
Most of all, though, I strongly, strongly dislike Hermès’ approach to sales. I’ll buy preloved over in-store any day of the week, purely to avoid dealing with the brand itself, and I know that many others feel the same way. My MIL, who used to be a regular customer at the Vienna and Paris stores, has all but sworn off Hermès now, because of their disregard for their more traditional client base, and their renewed vigour in promoting excessive spending and humiliating sales tactics. Shopping with Hermès is a constant source of stress, never a pleasure (see: the continuous panicking over on r/TheHermesGame and PurseForum), and it really shouldn’t be that way when you’re working with luxury brands and high price points.

Rose Jun
This outfit of Gong Jun's is one of my favorites ever. So did I shriek with joy when I saw this fig get posted for sale? Of course not. Not out loud!
Definitely inside my head. The initial howl of joy would have been a solid 160 barnbuster on the decibel scale, and that's just too loud for public consumption. Let's take a look at this beautiful inspiration, shall we?
Tumblr media
Gong Jun was looking incredible between the pages of Madame Figaro magazine in September 2022. He was the first man ever on the cover of the magazine, and he had three covers! I bought all 3 of them, and I regret nothing.
Look at this suit. It's incredible. There's nothing I like better than roses on clothing, but I'm very picky about them - only the most beautiful of roses. These are definitely the most beautiful of roses. Look at that gorgeous deep red, edged in black, which further sets off the incredible ruby color. We have lusciously dark green stems, and this incredible silk? Wool? Cashmere? Something amazing draping elegantly around Junjun in a blue-black midnight hue.
Underneath is a black lace shirt, and...wait for it...
Did you see it? It's around the 5 second mark.
Tumblr media
There's this incredible lace back on this suit! It is criminal we didn't get a photograph of this in the magazine. CRIMINAL.
It's a little difficult to see all the detail on the suit in the magazine picture, since the lighting is gorgeously shadowy. Here's the same picture with me removing a lot of that artful shadowing:
Tumblr media
Now you can see a lot of detail here - the pleated cummerbund, more of the lace shirt since it pops more against his skin, and the lace cuffs at the wrists. This definitely looks more like silk here, maybe a silk / linen blend? The suit is by a brand called GCDS, and I looked them up to see if I could find any further details about this suit, especially pictures of the back. He looks so good in this suit - it fits him perfectly. Look how gorgeous that fits him. Just outstanding.
The suit is from their Fall 2022 / Winter 2023 collection, which was, interestingly enough, inspired by Dracula.
Tumblr media
Here is "Look 24" from their fashion show, where we can see more detail, especially with the pants. I had no idea there was a matching hat!
Here's another view, this time of the back:
Tumblr media
The money I would pay to have seen this angle on Gong Jun, I tell you.
I would buy this suit in a heartbeat, if I had any idea how to get it, and if I wouldn't have to cut so much off the hems that the bottom of the cargo pants would touch the floor. As it is, I have it in miniature fig form!
Tumblr media
My favorite is when figs are in little plastic bags in their polystyrene mailing boxes. They are still wedged firmly in, but just slip right out vs me cutting into the plastic foam. I also feel like they're less prone to breakage this way even when packed at the factory, but that may just be me.
Tumblr media
Here he is, looking dapper as can be! This was not an easy fig for the factory to make - the fig maker spent a lot of time with them getting it just right.
Tumblr media
There's a lot of details on this fig - we have the cummerbund, the lace at the cuffs, and you can see the bit of the lace shirt under the suit jacket.
Tumblr media
I love the 3-D effect of the roses!
Tumblr media
And oh, what is this? Could it be?
Tumblr media
The lace back! Amazing. We can see the cummerbund fastener here too.
Tumblr media
Here's a close up of that wonderful lace back.
Tumblr media
This looks so good. I love the wrapped angle on the back of the jacket.
Tumblr media
I don't love the cargo pants on the original suit - I think it drags the eye down from the beautiful drapery of the jacket, but what do I know.
Tumblr media
She rendered Junjun's spiky hair here beautifully!
Tumblr media
I love the details on the shoes here too. The pose matches the Madame Figaro pose exactly.
Tumblr media
I take it (partially) back, the cargo pockets look pretty cool on the fig - gives it a bit of interest.
Tumblr media
What a great suit. I wish it came in women's sizes.
Tumblr media
Not much to see on this angle - just a bit of the roses peeking out!
Tumblr media
The fig came with a very supermodel-ly Gong Jun keychain! I love it.
Tumblr media
Dual sided keychain. He looks so good! I would have taken an entire magazine of just shots of him walking around and posing in this suit, let me tell you.
Material: Resin
Fig Count: 446
Scene Count: 30
Rating: "Red roses are for love triumphant and perfect"

My Radz-At-Han Immersive Experience FFXIV Candle
I was so excited entering the fabled bustling merchant hub of Radz-At-Han in FFXIV and as a candle maker I couldn't resist trying to capture this iconic place in fragrance!
Tumblr media
Inspired by India, and the land where alchemy was born, I knew I had to start from a herbal, earthy, and spicy base.
Looking for something I loved the smell of, and that had roots in India, I quickly came to realize one of my favorite bases is Vetiver- it originates from India!! (Who knew?) It was the perfect choice to start out this fragrance.
I wanted this scent to POP! Just like all the vibrant colors of Radz-At-Han, but still have a huge earthy and grounding feel.
To achieve this, I added orange essential oils and lemon to bring in citrus to calm down the spice while giving a colorful pop to the nose.
I wanted to tie into the lore using some oils marketed as "silk or cashmere inspired" like Bergamot and Hemp to give a nod to the textile market in the region. It needed more balance towards woodiness so a dash of cedar did the trick to change it from overly spiced to twice as nice!
Looking through the lore, spending time there and exploring the #ffxivbotanist nodes in the region, I decided to name the scent notes Thavnarian Silk, Paprika and Perilla Leaf. I think those would be the in-game equivalent scents (according to my artistic vision anyway). If I had to give this IRL notes they would be spicy vetiver, lemon, hemp, and cedarwood.
The essential oils I used in this creation were: elemi, fir balsam, geranium, orange, patchouli, and vetiver.
SOOO MANY!! Most candles only use 3!
I encased these elements in a beautiful soy wax and gave it the color yellow since that is a prominent color of the Radz color scheme, and honestly it just felt right for the fragrance’s character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you try this scent creation, let me know how I did! I love feedback. Also if you have any ideas for my next creation I'd love to hear them and give it a shot!

Amiri Fall 2022 Ready to Wear
Mike Amiri is Los Angeles fashion. His Fall 2022 womenswear set- shot via a candid look book- demonstrates that the American designer has nearly perfected his upscale take on classic daywear. The Amiri label- founded just eight years ago in 2014- has integrated into American pop culture built on prized denim, stylish accessories, and a spirited, contemporary rock and roll attitude. It would have been easy for Mike and his team to rest assuredly given all the mainstream success this once tiny label has achieved in such a short period. Opting to challenge themselves and grow intrinsically rather than remain boxed into a set domain means the label is now entering its second life. Nearly unrecognizable from his previous work just a few seasons ago, the designer is stepping up his game to match a level of work typically seen on the runways in Paris and Milan. This LA kid has arrived. Amiri’s eye for interpreting luxury in a grounded, metropolitan ideology proves that the Los Angeles scene may have more to offer on a global scale. Mike and his downtown team appear to be making the pitch, who needs New York anyway?
Louis Vuitton has their monogram print. Gucci, their horse-bit buckle. As far as house codes go for Mike Amiri’s concept, the designer has relied heavily on denim as a means to show his craftsmanship and love of the cotton crowd favorite. For Fall, a remix of a jean and sweatpants combination paired with a cozy navy blue teddy coat and crew-neck crop-top displayed the designer's willingness to experiment with the new while staying connected to his roots. Did this hybridization of styles work? Not necessarily, though the inclusion of playing with different mediums to arrive at consumers ever thirsting quench for comfort was valiant in its efforts. Continuing along this trend of mix-and-matching fabrics saw a maxi length pleated skirt in black and one in white, as well as a cement-colored leather panel, conjoin with the popular Amiri denim. If not a win for style, at least the pattern makers had fun creating such contraptions. Sumptuous takes on classic daywear pieces perfected the enticingly modern mood of the season. The most notable out of these crafted categories was the strong outerwear. The softest fleece-lined moto jackets in all of LA were shown alongside burly, oversized wrap teddy coats and moody 1980s style blazers. The Amiri woman is grown up and ready to enjoy a mature wardrobe to accompany her new lavish lifestyle. If you want to be taken seriously, dress like it, in the case of Mike Amiri- he is certainly designing like it. Furthering this established collection into a realm of balanced cohesion highlighted the ambitious task of adding desirable base layers of comfortable essentials to the lineup. Styles like the brand’s known boxy, strong shoulder cotton t-shirt and cashmere, silk blend turtleneck did just that. Sporty and contemporary undertones uplift this highly contextualized statement of dressing for an active lifestyle without sacrificing the accompanied beauty of these clothes.
Since deciding to show in Paris for the Spring Summer 2020 menswear season just over two years ago, Amiri has enjoyed a facelift of principle. Undoubtedly inspired by the touch and finesse of the French, this once DIY-infused brand is evolving into a budding name followed as much now for its modernity as it once was for its jeans. In just eight years- the blink of an eye as far as this industry is concerned- Amiri has established itself as a go-to label for excellently crafted staples and pieces that improve one’s daily wardrobe rotation. The noticeable improvement in taste behind this once mainstay streetwear brand proves the founder is innovative and will remain committed to furthering the Amiri story. The question then is, where will he push himself to next?

Chapter 1. Duncan Fashion, my GWTW fanfiction The Robillard Boutique
Tumblr media
Charleston, May 1876
Excitement was building in Charleston's good society. At last, they would be able to meet the handsome heir to the most venerable and ancient family in the Deep South and certainly one of the wealthiest families in America.
So many mysteries surrounded Duncan Vayton, the great benefactor of the Cause and the new prince of fashion. *****
Paris, France, 1859 Duncan Vayton had left Charleston after graduating from West Point with flying colors. The future was open to him. His parents were excited to see him take over Soft South, the largest cotton plantation in South Carolina. They were even more excited about the prospect of their only son starting a family.
Duncan had other desires. Europe was opening its arms to him. American cotton from the Southern States, "King Cotton" as it was known, was wreaking havoc across the continent. Europeans imported 3,000,000 bales of the precious textile raw material every year.
It is under these favorable skies that the southern planter was welcomed with open arms by the French businessmen.
Upon his arrival, the young Duncan made an appointment with a major textile entrepreneur, Roger Dax, importer of a large quantity of Soft South's production. A first visit to the Dax woollen mill in Roubaix intrigued him. As a young man, he had ridden the miles of cotton fields to the point of mastering all the steps and hazards of growing and harvesting cotton. Therefore, he became interested in the techniques of transforming the bales into finished products.
Roger Dax was happy to show him his latest looms. He became familiar with the notions of carded cycle, beating, loader, drawing bench, spindle bench or worsted cycle. To perfect his knowledge, he visited the greatest textile factories in France and England, and was curious about the mechanical innovations of weaving.
His decision was made to join forces with his French friend, to bring him a substantial working capital and the energy of young America in order to transform the Dax family spinning mill into a textile factory aiming to compete with the largest French companies.
Of course, the master of Soft South had decided to supply himself with raw materials primarily from his family Plantation, ensuring also a substantial market share to his neighboring planters in the South. He could thus guarantee to his European customers, with full knowledge of the facts, a first quality cotton.
In order to distinguish themselves from other French linen manufacturers by the quality of the hems and trimmings, the two partners then secured the exclusivity of the best embroiderers installed in the North of France.
Vayton & Dax quickly established themselves in the lucrative market for embroidered tablecloths and monogrammed sheets. Their products were featured in the catalog of the famous Parisian store "Bon Marché". Advertising inserts were published in popular newspapers for the family. It became fashionable to enrich any wedding trousseau of young ladies of good society with the indispensable linens stamped "Vayton & Dax". ***
Charleston, 1861
At the first rumors of a probable conflict between the North and the South in early 1861, the Charlestonian enthusiastically left comfortable Europe to defend the values of his beloved South. When the Confederate States announced their entry into the war, the young man joined his army corps, swollen with confidence in the victory of the Cause.
From his first review of the troops, he realized how poorly equipped his soldiers were in uniforms. While the gray garment was adorned with flashy gold buttons, the fine canvas seemed, to the expert eyes of the textile professional, far too light to withstand the rigors of combat in what was sure to be a long war.
Unlike the Yankees, the Confederate States had a severe lack of cotton mills to transform their cotton production into clothing for their soldiers. So much so that, when the blockade no longer allowed General Lee's army to resupply itself, Lieutenant-Colonel Duncan Vayton contacted his French associate Roger Dax in Roubaix, and undertook to have his personal funds used to manufacture tightly woven pants and jackets to guarantee better waterproofing.
To repatriate this production to the battlefields of the southern army, he had to contact a blockade breaker. He was advised the best, the most intrepid, and therefore also the most expensive, a certain Rhett Butler.
An exchange of messages made him realize that invoking solidarity to the Cause among Charlestonians in order to lower the astronomical transportation rates had no chance of moving Captain Butler. Like the other blockade-breakers, he favored the transport of luxury goods which he would then sell at a high margin. Monopolizing valuable yardage for the benefit of the Army was a waste for these war profiteers. Duncan felt a deep contempt for this character.
When the defeat of the South was inevitable, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Vayton, a great military strategist like his West Point professors, always on the front lines of battle, had won the unconditional admiration and respect of his men.
At the end of the war, Duncan helped his parents restore their plantation, which had suffered less than most of their friends.
Then he decided to go back to France. To the great despair of Cathleen and Aymeric Vayton. They had hoped so much that their only son would marry and give them an heir. Duncan would always reply, "Later, maybe someday.“
It wasn't for lack of opportunity to marry an attractive Southern belle: Duncan was, without a doubt, one of the most handsome men in Charleston. Tall, slender, with curly golden hair, deep blue eyes, a frank smile that emphasized a fine mustache, and a warm voice... In a few words, the perfect Prince Charming.
For Cathleen and Aymeric Vayton, any visit to Charleston by Duncan was an opportunity for grand receptions. Only the most respectable families were invited. Those with young daughters to marry were privileged. Any young beauty in bloom would shudder when she met Duncan's azure gaze. He would offer a smile, a dance, a compliment, a bow. With the assurance of a broken heart for his young admirer.
Yet Duncan was not dry-hearted. He loved his family deeply, his parents and his younger sister Melina, and was not stingy in his displays of affection for them. His Mammy, who had raised two generations of Vaytons, marveled at his big heart.
As for love... Duncan was discreet about his love affairs. His pre-war Parisian life had allowed him to blossom sexually... without obligation. Blondes, brunettes or redheads, they had to be sweet, loving, and above all without any desire to marry. He often preferred young married Parisian women. An exchange of pleasure guaranteed without constraint.
So Duncan was happy to resume his comfortable carnal habits upon his return to Europe in 1865. ***
Paris, 1865 His professional fulfillment was beginning to wane. Managing his flourishing textile company in France was no longer of much interest. He was only interested in creation and innovation. Roger Dax was not surprised that his American friend entrusted him with the management of their company.
The teachers who had trained him since childhood had initiated him very early to the knowledge of arts. The beauty of forms and the shimmer of colors intrigued him. The old Europe and its cradle of culture was an infinite resource of visual pleasure. Architecture, sculpture and painting, even the originality of wallpapers in vogue in private salons, everything was a pretext to titillate his intellectual curiosity.
This same attraction to beauty was of course expressed in the woman's body, her sinuous curves and the fabrics that highlighted them.
Inevitably, this thought process led him to take an interest in women's clothing. He eagerly embarked on a new adventure, luxury clothing.
To do this, the aesthete chose the most shimmering silks from India and the Far East, the softest cashmere wools, and the finely chiseled lace from the lacemakers of Calais. He selected the best milliners and mother-of-pearl button makers. A large, bright and ventilated workshop was reserved for the "little hands" responsible for inlaying pearls and brilliants on the most delicate fibers.
Designers and seamstresses were hired to join the venture. Revolutionary sewing machines made it easier for Duncan to produce handmade goods and let his imagination run wild.
The Duncan style, combining elegance, colors and sinuous curves, was born. His showroom on Rue de la Paix in Paris was named "La Mode Duncan".
Luck continued to protect him when he met the Empress Eugenie's milliner at a social dinner. The undeniable charm of the young American attracted the curiosity of the lady of the court. An appointment was made for a visit to the workshop and the presentation of the most beautiful models. The meeting was productive, followed by substantial orders. "La Mode Duncan" was launched.
Her designs were featured in the famous women's magazine "La Mode Illustrée" and in more specialized magazines such as "Le Journal des Marchandes de Mode".  Other of her creations, more accessible to the budgets of the petty bourgeoisie, appeared each year in the Catalogue of « Le Bon Marché ». Dresses, petticoats and hats from this new fashion house were snapped up.
"La Mode Duncan" had finally succeeded in imposing its fame and equalled the notoriety of the greatest Parisian couturiers.
Everything was going well for him. Until that day in December 1874, and the telegram from Cathleen. His father had died of a heart attack. His duty was to return to his family.
