It’s getting there. I’m going to have to do at least 2 more repeats in addition to the pattern instructions so that the whole piece measures nicely square.

omg, i’m learning to crochet and i’m just imagining crocheting spence a scarf and him wearing it all the time
JUST IMAGINE
he’d be so touched that you made something for him with your bare hands
it would be one his favourite items, ever (folded neatly in his top draw when he’s not wearing it)
it wouldn’t matter if a few chains are wonky, he’d love it either way
i just imagine derek and emily taking the piss out of him for wearing it all the time. oh but penelope absolutely loves it!
anyways- yeh i’m crocheting
- 🦕 xx
written super fast cus i got inspired and not proof read, sorry guys
also i have not crocheted or have ever shown interest in crocheting my whole life so everything i made up so plz ignore the mistakes 😓enjoy!
scarf. spencer reid
Tumblr media
spencer reid x fem!reader
to tell you that you’re good at crocheting would be lying to you but you don’t think that spencer is lying at all, because of course for a man who knows everything about the workings of the world, he doesn’t know what a good crochet scarf looks like.
originally it was a prototype of yours, your first attempt after watching a youtube tutorial twice but spencer insists on having it, saying that it's too much yarn to go to waste and when you said that you can just pull it out, he didn't sit around to hear. he carries it around like a trophy of some sort, making a point of wearing it everywhere he goes.
your attempts of trying to tell him to knock it off, promising that you'll make another one that looks more decent but spencer says he likes the uneven lines, likes how the fluff rubs against his skin and how it keeps him warmer than a normal scarf. you think--scratch that, you know that it's all bullshit, but spencer's one immovable object to go against. getting ready to go to work together used to be your favorite part of the day but now it's just embarrassing.
embarrassing would be a wrong word. more like frustrating.
"you crocheted it in my favorite color yn," spencer defends the ugly scarf like it's his child, throwing it around his shoulder and wrapping it snugly around his neck. the purple looks absolutely offensive against the beige of his thrifted sweater, but his eyes melting and lips pouting at you made the look work. kind of. it's still fucking ugly.
"that's 'cause you bought the yarn for me spence," you roll your eyes exasperatedly. the scarf's been a conversation topic every morning since spencer saw it sitting sadly in your closet and fell in love with it. considering how spencer's entire wardrobe is made of old man clothes and unconventional colors, you would understand the appeal of something looking wonky and strange, but the scarf is a stretch.
to be honest, you think it's endearing, spencer's tainted fashion sense. it makes him look softer, heartier, like a welcoming little plush bear with his wispy curls and pink cheeks and gentle voice and worn cardigans. the scarf does fit all his criteria for a good piece of clothing so you should've saw it coming that he would hold on to it like his lifeline and you would tolerate it if he didn't go to every single person he sees throughout the day and boast about the maker of the scarf and you shrinking in the corner as he talks about you. morgan was the first to laugh about it, followed by emily.
"got the hands to diffuse a bomb but not one to crochet a decent scarf, huh?" morgan would say as he walks past your cubicle, a cheshire grin on his face. emily would chuckle. you would snap at him, "shut the hell up morgan," and then sigh. because what the hell. the scarf is so fucking ugly but spencer parades it like the queen's necklace.
you get better at crocheting--it helps you think and you would do it on the plane to new cases sometimes and threaten to stab emily if she makes fun of you--and eventually, you finish crocheting a duplicate for spencer's monstrosity of a purple scarf. this one is more in the shape of a scarf instead of one wacky-looking pasta noodle, with straight chains and the shade of purple on this one is cuter; dark and elegant. you couldn't wait to show it to spencer, couldn't wait for him to finally throw away the crusty scarf he loves so much.
the new one sits, folded neatly, on the table on his side of the bed. for days. winter rolls around and spencer wears it to fucking sleep.
"give that poor scarf a break reid," emily comments. spencer chews on his lip as he flicks through files, silent and unbothered, fingers unconsciously running through the bumpy chains, back and forth. you mumble your agreement and when he pays no attention to you like he did emily, too immerse in his work.
after work that day, you and spencer take a walk around the city, bodies huddled closely together. the first snowflake falls and spencer catches it on his finger, shoving his finger closely to your face, proud of himself. his grin is hidden underneath the purple scarf and for the first time, you don't mind.
"it melted," you tell him and spencer drops his hand, flicking at his index finger disappointedly.
"i can't wait for it to snow," he says, looking up at the grey sky.
"i can't wait for that scarf to decompose," you say, just speaking off the top of your head.
"i like the scarf," spencer quips, mood clashing yours.
"i know you do baby," you sigh, defeated. spencer's frozen fingers grasp yours and runs his fingers over the bumps of your knuckles. being so close you can smell him, soft and sweet like vanilla and old cotton and comfort. "why don't you ever wear the other one?"
spencer shrugs. "just doesn't feel the same." he adds. "and i like this purple better."

So I decided to learn to knit! I've never before found a way to ethically and cheaply get yarn. I found a little ball of yarn outside at some point, as one does, and saved it, but beyond that I didn't have any other tools. Then I saw a video showing how you can take a thrifted machine-knit sweater, and undo it back into yarn, and then just knit with that. Incredible, since I have a full box of old sweaters, I just need to figure out which ones are easily undone.
So I grabbed my little ball of found yarn, and then I needed some needles. I looked up what I could use instead, and found there's plenty of alternatives; pencils, chopsticks, wooden sticks for barbecue. Looking around my room I realized I had some very long paintbrushes; I tried to use them, and immediately realized they need to have a pointy end. I grabbed a pencil sharpener and sharpened them; only this made them very rough and splintered. I needed to sand them down, but I had no sandpaper, and then I remembered that recently someone gave me a flat tool that removes dry skin from feet. I sanded them down with that, and it actually worked, they worked perfectly like knitting needles. They're even the same size.
Tumblr media
The knitters probably already know this, but if you start knitting for the first time, especially if it's winter and you're under a blanket, some ancient human instinct will activate and you will feel that you are doing exactly what you're supposed to be doing and everything is well and right with the world. Creating fabric is a powerful thing to do, in a society where everyone needs fabric to stay alive, and go outside, and I like having this power to myself.
I found out there are two basic types of stitches; knit stitch, and purl stitch. I liked the knit stitch better, on the basis that purl stitch had 'bad vibes'.
It knew before that most fabric will be woven, or knitted, or in some cases, crochet, so I got little curious, and studied each layer of clothing on me, and every single item of clothing was knit, and it was all a purl stitch. I got fascinated by this, wondering if this is true for most clothing, or if I just somehow prefer knit things on me because they're nice and stretchy. Looking into other fabrics, I could easily tell that all of the sheets, pillowcases and kitchen cloths were woven, and that they were much sturdier and less stretchy for it.
I looked at stuff in my closet, and found that I had a scarf, hat, and pants that were woven, but in very soft and warm fabric, and they were very sturdy and non-stretchy as well. I then wondered what was the logic behind it, and is there a traditional type of things that will be woven, that isn't just bedsheets and cloths?
I tried to find a video on youtube detailing that stuff, but no female-made video was found, so I'm now downloading several women-written audibooks on the topic of history of textiles. I think we should just take the power to make textiles back to us, because back when women were the maker of the cloth, it was just something we 'did out of the goodness of our hearts for our families' but it was also environmentally friendly, practical, sustainable and a beautiful, powerful craft. Now that m*n decided it's something to make money off, they created fast fashion, tons of waste and environmental damage, new types of slavery for workers, and the clothing isn't even practical anymore, it's made to fall apart.
So, back to my knitting, I have to say it's not happening very fast, I thought by the end of the day I would be done with that little ball of yarn and be able to tell how much fabric it can make, nope, did not happen, in fact I've been working on it two days and by this time I've barely made any progress. Apparently the 'purl stitch' is faster, well, I'm still refusing to do it. Boo purl stitch. The yarn I found outside is some of the worst quality yarn I've ever seen, not only it's different in thickness everywhere, but in some places there are 3-4 different threads distangled from each other, and it confused me so much while knitting that I kept adding stitches on the brush unnecessarily, until the entire thing could barely fit on one.
One thing that surprised me was how incredibly soft, stretchy and comfortable the fabric feels when made. I genuinely expected the fabric to be as horrifying as the yarn quality, nope, it's nice and comfy I absolutely love it.
There is a movement in online spaces for being mindful of environment when purchasing clothing, and making our own wardrobes, which is absolutely delightful; seeing people gain new respect and fascination for clothing, sewing and textile making, and then doing it themselves and becoming non-dependent on capitalism, it's the change the world needs. I didn't think I would try to join in, because I get so much discarded and unwanted clothing from others, I wouldn't need to buy any ever, but I did get fascinated by looms, natural fibers, and women doing all that work, that I can't resist trying it out.

I'm learning to crochet!
I decided that I don't like any of the news on here today so instead I'm going to show you guys what I've been working on because I realized that I usually don't actually post any of it here.
At the beginning of 2024 I decided during the middle of an ice storm that I was going to teach myself to crochet. You know how it is. Anyway here's everything I've made that I still have photos of (I had to switch phones recently and lost some of my stuff)
Tumblr media
so approximately an order: I started with a pair of leg warmers I could wear to work. On the one hand they are very cute and very warm on the other hand I cannot get them to stay up I need to add a tie to the top of them.
Tumblr media
And then I made a whole sweater. My second project I sat down and lately modified a video pattern (shortened the sleeves and made it a little bit wider cuz I am not as skinny as the original maker) and most importantly... I decided instead of the standard collar I wanted a turtleneck but you see this was my second project ever... And I may have underestimated how wide the chain I made was going to be and ended up with a... Mild monstrosity. It's incredibly silly and I love it
Tumblr media
Next I made this muffler by teaching myself how to do crocodile stitch. I was using leftover yarn from the sweater and some black I had around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then I remembered that a friend of mine had made a request years ago back when I was still just doing loom knitting asking if I could make them a shawl and I did not have the skills and talents for that at the time but I do now so I contacted their partner and had them give me their new address and tell me what colors they're into right now and secretly made them this shawl
Tumblr media
And then I this crocodile scale dice bag to put in the box for the partner so they would have a nice surprise too.
Tumblr media
And my most recent project finished yesterday: My coworker is having another baby and has not told most of us yet. They have forgotten that I can hear everything that happens in the next room over though so I overheard part of the conversation of them telling our boss. So I thought it would be fun to surprise them with a pair of stuffed rabbits. Rabbits were my animal of choice for stuffed animal as a kid. And I like the idea of having one for each of the kids. I'm going to be keeping them in my desk until they tell me.
Anyway I hope you enjoyed this tour oh my God I almost forgot the important one that took up multiple months of my life just a second.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made an entire blanket. It is made out of leftover yarn given to me over the years by various people and remnants from projects I've done previously. I like to call it the gayest blanket because not only is it a full rainbow but I did absolutely no math. Didn't count a single thing.
Anyway I think that's all of them.

I saw Crimson Peak on your list and got excited because Charlie Hunnam's character often gets overlooked! I wonder if you'd have some little fluff about him (fall/gothic aesthetics would be most welcome)
I'm so glad to find another Alan fan! He's really an underrated character in the film. I'm a little brain dead due to some health issue flare ups at the moment, so hopefully a list of headcanons is okay:
Alan loves your spooky/gothic aesthetic when it comes to your clothes. Even though other people thought it made you stick out like a sore thumb, it was one of the things that drew him to you in the first place.
When fall rolls around, he 100% helps you go all out with the decorations and proudly wears matching cozy sweaters with you (were sweaters a thing in his time period? Not sure, but we're gonna roll with it).
I'm not 100% sure when Halloween became close to the thing it is now, but it's my fav holiday, so again, we're gonna roll with it. He loves watching you put so much care and love into either choosing or making a costume and loves to match you once the holiday approaches. He'll help you dress up the outside of your house or porch to draw trick or treaters, dresses up with you, and loves helping you pass out candy. In between trick or treaters, he's so happy to just sit on the porch and talk to you.
If you'd rather throw a costume party, he's completely on board for that too. He's helping you hang the decorations that go up high and insists on lifting anything heavy for you. If you're a handmade decoration/costume kind of person, he's showering your work in compliments and will be over the moon if you make something for him.
Speaking of costumes, he lets you go all out on any spooky facepaint/makeup that will complete his look.
He loves taking fall walks with you and thinks it's adorable when you purposely walk on the fallen leaves to get that satisfying crunch and will do it with you. Anyone watching might think you two are being childish, but you're too busy having fun crouching leaves and giggling with him.
He's always making sure you bundle up enough - he is a doctor after all and wouldn't want you to catch a cold. But of course if you do, he's there to the rescue and insists on taking expert care of you. If you don't have or didn't bring a good enough coat, he'll offer up his (never mind the fact that he's risking a cold himself; "don't worry, I'm a doctor, I'll nurse myself back to health in no time").
He becomes an expert hot chocolate/tea/coffee (whatever your preference is) maker just for you and will make the coziest set up by the fireplace with hot drinks, blankets, and whatever books/hobbies you two enjoy together.
I can totally see him also being the type to plant some apple trees in his backyard pre-relationship specifically so he can learn to make cider and bring it to you as a way to impress you.
If you know how to knit or crochet and make him some gloves or a sweater for the incoming cold season, he gives you the biggest puppy eyes when you give them to him. He'll treat them like gold and hardly ever has them away from his person.
He never knew much about the gothic aesthetic before he met you, but is fascinated by it once you introduce it to him - especially if he visits your house and it's designed/decorated in that style - and thinks it's gorgeous.
If he sees something in a shop that he thinks you'd like that would match your love of all things fall and/or goth, he'll buy it for you without hesitation and be so cute and bashful about giving it to you.
He won't hear a word if anyone tries to insult your style and reminds you he thinks you're the most gorgeous person on the planet.

My latest work in progress is the ‘Gloria’ shawl designed to honor my grandmother. She was a knitter too, but she mostly concentrated on sewing because it was her business as a ballgown seamstress from the 1960s through the early 1990s. My grandfather renovated their home carport into her Maker’s Room.
She did a lot of home decor crocheting, but rarely knitted because of time and because in New Orleans, the climate doesn’t call for handmade knitwear like mittens, shawls or sweaters.
Gloria has inspired my interest in making; and this is one simple way to honor her. She was elegant; and I hope my shawl is something she would have loved.
The ‘Gloria’ Shawl knitting pattern by Keisha Knits is coming soon.

The Great Depression
It’s odd to admit that The Great Depression fascinates me, especially since it was a dark period in American history. But it does fascinate me, enough so that I’ve written several short stories and a couple novels (unpublished) based in the era. How people lived, what they ate, how they entertained themselves – most of all how they survived that period – it intrigues me.
Tumblr media
Following WWI, during the Roaring Twenties the economy and America thrived. The present and future appeared bright. A few economists predicted that the good times couldn’t last forever, but the world paid little attention. Throughout 1929, there were signs of a slowing economy, and then on October 24th – what is now known as Black Thursday – the stock market crashed. In the following weeks, it was confirmed that the perpetual party of the 1920’s was over and that a new, bleak era was being ushered in.

For the next decade, America and the rest of the world endured the Great Depression. Images of bank closures and people lined up for soup kitchen often crop up in the history books and on the internet. As well as the famous photograph of the careworn mother and her children. My four grandparents lived through the Great Depression and that part of their lives affected their experiences and behavior. Even late in life, they couldn’t shake off those memories. Growing up, I heard countless stories of those days. My grandmother, Margaret, was very candid about the past. She would have just turned twelve when the stock market crashed and she would have been sixteen in 1933, which was considered one of the worst years during the Depression. Her memories were vivid, painting a picture that the history books couldn’t. She was the third of six children – her eldest brother died as a baby – her father was a boiler maker and her mother a housewife. They were a loving Christian family, which is what I believe brought them through the hardest of times. Grandma and her family never went hungry, however, there were many times they didn’t know they’d make ends meet. Yet somehow, they always did.

Hobos would show up on their back porch. A picture of a cat had been drawn on their fence, signaling to other hobos that a kind lady lived there. And my great-grandmother, Edith, was kind, feeding whoever was hungry. If great-grandpa, Charles was present, the visitor would be welcomed in the kitchen to eat and for a nice conversation. Charles always had a job, unfortunately he didn’t always have work and was often sent home. By 1933, his health began to fail and two weeks before Margaret’s sixteenth birthday, he died. Extended family planned to help, by splitting up the family. So-and-So would take Margaret, So-and-So would take Bettie, So-and-So would take Russel…but Edith was adamant: “We may starve together, but we will stay together.” For the remainder of the 1930s, they banded together to survive.

The weather seemed to turn against the country as well. Dust storms struck all over America, costing lives and ruining livelihoods. It soon became known as the Dust Bowl. Lightening accompanied the storms, and folks would hang chains off the bumpers of their cars to prevent them from being stuck. If caught in a dust storm, one would have to cover their face with a cloth and walk backwards against the gusts. Houses had to be shut up tight, windows closed and key holes plugged to prevent the dust from seeping in. But old houses had their crevices and dust would get in somehow. Decades later, Margaret and others who lived through the Dust Bowl, out of habit would place cups and bowls upside down in the cabinets because that is what they did to prevent dust from collecting on their dishes.

Clothing was rarely store bought. Dresses were made from stylishly printed feed sacks, using patterns, and sewn by hand, or by sewing machine. Sweaters and cardigans were knitted or crocheted. Shoes were worn at work and school, but at home if the weather was seasonable, they went barefoot to preserve their shoes. Clothing was patched and mended and passed from one sibling down to another, then onto another family. Like many of that era, Margaret left high school early to work. She was first a maid, then she worked in a number of factories. Her earnings of $4 a week went to the household. Later during WWII, when she earned $16, she was allowed to keep $4 for herself, and felt she was rich.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president and was eventually voted into office three more terms, holding the position until his death in 1945. After Herbert Hoover, who was oblivious to the suffering of the American people, many trusted Roosevelt would lead the nation through the dark times. His New Deal, his relief programs, his steadiness, his fireside chats were a beacon of hope. His assurances that they had “nothing to fear but fear itself” spoke volumes. Despite his attempts to alleviate the financial woes and troubles of the 1930s, the US didn’t rise out of the Great Depression until the onslaught of WWII.
Years later, Grandma told me that her life had been a hard one, but it had been good and satisfying. I believe many of that era would say as much. I don’t know if it is the Great Depression that is my favorite era, or if it’s the people who lived during that time. They possessed an indomitable spirit. After the Great Depression, they endured WWII and more or less saved the world. That generation proved to us that whatever trials we may face today, this too shall pass.

Hey, I’ve been thinking of trying out some fiber arts (specifically card weaving) and I remembered seeing you do a lot of knitting stuff. Do you have any basic advice or recs for picking yarn? I’m sure if I get into this I’ll take the time to hunt down more specific resources, but to start I’m probably just going to grab a couple yarn colors from the nearest store lol.
Specifically, I remember seeing some post about how the little pill/yarn ball thingies that form on sweaters when you wash them are because of the yarn not being properly prepared. Do you know about that, and if it’s something I should worry about? Or should I just be fine grabbing whatever off the shelf and getting right to work?
By the way, I love seeing your designs on my dash when they pop up, they’re really nice!
Hi, thanks very much, I'm happy to hear you like my stuff!
For yarn choices, I'm not super familiar with card weaving (so if anybody reading this knows more, please add your thoughts if you want!) but I've read that cotton-based yarns are good for it. Stuff with a smoother, consistent texture would be a good starting place.
I think a plant-based fiber like cotton is less prone to pilling, too. Another thing that helps to prevent that is the ply of the yarn--the higher the better. That info will usually be on the yarn label with the 'weight' listing.
Other than that, I would say that if you're using a pattern for your project, see if the maker has suggested a yarn! Even if you can't or don't want to find the exact same one, the pattern might tell you what weight to use (worsted, dk, lace, etc.) for a specific project and you can go from there. (At least, that is the case for knitting and crocheting, I'm not sure about card weaving patterns.)
I hope this helps a bit! Good luck with your crafting!

Do they have any crafting hobbies?
She likes to cook and she'd like to learn knitting and crochet to make sweaters for Nibbles.
7. Do they have any unusual fears?
The reason she never learned to swim, besides just living in a desert for a while, is because she's afraid something will come up and grab her. She loves horror novels and read Jaws when she was like 10 and it traumatized her. Even if she can see the bottom of the pool!
AN: That one episode of Goosebumps also traumatized me the one where it looks like a pair of titties are under the surface of the pool or something. I still took swimming lessons though!

15. What kind of sense of humor do they have? Or do they have one at all?
Juvenile and prurient. He will try to make an innuendo out of everything and thinks the peak of his comedy is making his hands ice cold to grab Bea's tits. But like, it's endearing, not a frat bro kinda way.
25. Do they have a daily/nightly routine?
Pre-Bea:
Morning
Wake up
Question why you're still alive
Jerk off
Get up
Kiss Nibbles
Shower
Reheat a frozen breakfast burrito from a pack your neighbor was about to throw out because they were 3 days past expiration. They are now 10 days past expiration. Drink coffee that could be considered toxic waste.
Night
Fall into bed
Jerk off
Cry yourself to sleep
Post-Bea:
Morning
Wake up
Marvel at how fucking lucky you are to be alive AND have a hot girl in your bed
Fuck said hot girl
Shower
Wonder where your expired breakfast burritos went and why your coffee maker now requires little fuckin' pods
Eat the breakfast that hot girl lovingly made for you
Night
Fall into bed
Fuck? Depends on if you had a gig that day, you're getting old and shit is exhausting.
