Antique table oil lamp
I have been determined to make an oil lamp that's simple enough that it will become everyone's go-to oil lamp.
First, I tried to make my own lamp base, but it didn't go well; so, I looked for existing lamps to see if I could convert something.
You may remember my post "Lamps! Lamps!": I have used the floor oil lamp I modified, from Kerrigan House Designs' Antique floorlamp, and shrunk it down to be a table lamp!
(also remember I made my own lamp "The Gesner", used as the bedside lamp in these pictures?)
I've made three different globe shades - plain, roses, and an etched Victorian pattern; and, there's four different base colours - gold, old brass, silver, and black!
This is off-the-grid, but requires Cats & Dogs for the flame to work.
I really hope EVERYONE will be able to use this compliment any room!
And don't forget you could change the colour of the light, and intensity, to further customise!
Download my table lamp on my Patreon, for free!
Enjoy! Happy Simming!
(Can you tell I like sharing pictures?? You can just make such beautiful scenes in The Sims 4!!!)

I made Webby and the Lords in Black on Sims 4 a while ago:
Here’s Wiggly:

I was really proud of his hair. I also gave every Lord and Webby their own special room/building, so here’s Wiggly’s:

Decorating isn’t my strong suit but his room was the most fun to design, I was thinking mostly of a grand palace, mostly in green, with a fireplace and a table with thrones for him and his siblings to meet at - notice the white throne for Webby?
Here’s Pokey:

I couldn’t find a beret so I went for a Phantom of the Opera style fedora, but the eyes I found were PERFECT (side note - they are all spell casters because that made the most sense considering their godly powers). Here’s Pokey’s room:

I’ll be honest, I accidentally mostly forgot to give him instruments, my idea for this room was to explore his different interests because he spends most of TGWDLM trying to figure out what people want, and that’s reflected in the different activities in his room. I also gave him cool wallpaper that reminded me of a beehive as a cute nod to that - I think I gave him a violin in the end that you can only really see from a different angle.
Here’s Tinky:

My inspiration for Tinky’s look here was anime characters, much like in NPMD, but I found the perfect goat eyes for him that totally add to his look. Here’s Tinky’s room:

I gave Tinky every clock I could find, but the vibes of the room were definitely meant to replicate the cube with insane patterns meant to drive someone mad; there’s a rock climbing wall in the corner that I think alludes to Tinky’s feral energy.
Here’s Blinky:

I’ll be honest; this hairstyle for Blinky was what inspired me to recreate the eldritch siblings on the Sims, it just seemed perfect, and of course I made his eyes massive so he can have a good look at everyone. The sunglasses also seemed pretty accurate to me. Here’s Blinky’s room:

My idea for this room was to give Blinky things to watch - so there’s loads of tvs, a camera, comfy chairs and even spy tech in a corner in case shoes get too unrealistic for him. A small detail that I wanted to point out is that in every room for a Lord, I have placed lava lamps on their bedside tables that match their colours, funnily enough I just found them in the game anyway and they were a perfect fit.
Here’s Nibbly:

A fluffy jacket, pigtails and a big mouth, what else do you need for an accurate Nibbly? I love that jacket, I wish I owned it in real life. Here‘s Nibbly’s room:

Okay, this is essentially a fancy kitchen with a cupcake machine, a wardrobe, a vanity and a bed - I ran out of ideas here. Still, I think it’s cute and I think Nibbly would like it if he ever got midnight food cravings. This room could save lives.
Finally, here’s Webby:

I honestly think that Webby is the most accurate, I was looking at reference images for all of them but that dress seems like it’s been ripped right from the screen, not to mention her hair. I’m proud of this Webby, I can sleep well at night knowing I’ve at least done her justice. Here’s Webby’s room:

I was definitely going for ‘ethereal’ when I designed this room, with a chill, relaxing vibe - what could be more relaxing than loads of fairy lights? I also made it a priority to give Webby plants to show that she is encouraging new life instead of crushing it like her brothers - the larger amount of windows and lights also are meant to suggest that she’s a kinder, more moral/good person.
If you like my recreations, they are all together on the Sims gallery, just search for the Lords in Black and Webby or type in my EA ID, sparklefishkatie (shameless self-promotion) because I’ve put a lot of stuff on there over the years. Now; these guys are quite old, you might have to scroll back to find them, and I can’t actually remember if I put their rooms on the gallery, if I didn’t please let me know if you want them because I’ll absolutely put them up. If you’ve read to the bottom of this post, you’re the best, thanks a lot and please download these characters if you play Sims 4! 💕

On Obsession and Free Will 4
The fourth chapter of this fic! Written for Ectoberhaunt 2023 Day 12: Obsession.
Warning for loss of agency.
Danny woke with a slow, syrupy kind of comfort. He felt nicely weighted down. He blinked his eyes open. That would probably be because of the thick blanket draped over him.
“Clockwork?” he called.
“I am here. Stay where you are.”
“Mhm,” said Danny. Not a difficult instruction to follow. It draped over him in much the same way as the blanked.
Clockwork loomed into his field of view, red eyes bright in the shadow of his hood. “How do you feel?”
“Heavy,” said Danny. “Tired. My right shoulder feels kind of bruised, and so do my ribs. I think I still have a bunch of scratches from Dan. I feel… Good? Happy? Comfortable?” He blinked a little at how thorough he’d been. But why wouldn’t he be thorough when Clockwork asked him a question?
“Good,” said Clockwork.
A sense of pleasure suffused Danny. Clockwork said he did good! Or that his current state was good. Danny wasn’t sure.
“You took care of me,” said Danny. It made his thoughts feel bubbly with happiness.
“I did. You sound surprised.”
“I was worried you wouldn’t,” confessed Danny. “After you had what you wanted.”
“I see,” said Clockwork. “Tell me, can you think of any circumstances where you would not obey me?”
Danny’s eyes fell halfway closed. He could feel the walls of the box Clockwork had made of his Obsession. They were firm, the joints and corners rounded. He could push against them and feel them push back, an even pressure on his mental body. He was not locked in so much as welded in, every escape closed, the box unopenable without the kind of force that would break the contents.
He wondered if, as he grew more used to them, the walls would recede from his awareness.
“If I didn’t understand what you wanted,” said Danny. “Or if I couldn’t do it. Or if you told me not to beforehand.”
“What if you interpreted my orders as being given under duress?”
“Like, someone was forcing you?” Danny frowned. “Can someone force you?”
“Perhaps,” said Clockwork. “For the sake of this question and your answer, assume that it is so.”
“Well,” said Danny, feeling like he was trying to follow a line of thought made of razor wire, “I guess… if you were being forced, it wasn’t something you wanted to say? So, I… I’d base what I was doing on what you’ve told me before and the surrounding context.” The box felt very small right now, but he was still inside it. The walls pulsed comfortably around his swollen thoughts.
Clockwork smiled faintly and patted Danny on the head. “Excellent,” he said. “Please get up and follow me.”
Danny wriggled out of his blanket and stood, unsteady, taking in the room for the first time. It was a bedroom. Nothing fancy, but obviously arranged for the maximum physical comfort of its inhabitant, for all that the walls were made of interlocking metal gears behind glass etched with patterns that put Danny in mind of antique clocks. Everything was draped in dark, silver-flecked fabric, or piled with cushions. There were bedside tables, and a desk in one corner, but they were oddly rounded, made of clockwork metal and wood, but covered in a thick layer of rounded glass. The light in the room was diffuse, and seemed to emanate from somewhere near the ceiling, but Danny couldn’t find the source.
Overall, it put him oddly in mind of the mental image of the box around him, his thoughts, and his actions.
“Is this your bedroom?” asked Danny.
“No,” said Clockwork. “It is yours. Do you like it?”
“Yes,” said Danny. “It seems comfortable.”
“Good. You will be spending time here, in the future.” Clockwork turned away, to a wall, and drew back a dark curtain to reveal the outline of a door. There was no handle that Danny could see, but the gears in the wall rotated, moving a bar and a counterweight, and the door swung open on its own.
Outside, the hall - if he could call it that - was similar, but the walls weren’t covered with glass. There was only a little of the stonework Danny usually associated with Long Now, and he got the distinct impression that this was the lair itself revealing some truth about itself to him.
They came to a wider space, where at least the floor was covered by another, continuous material. The room was filled with cabinets, shelves, and long tables. Worktables, Danny thought, seeing the tools and small objects that rested on them. The workspace was, overall, much neater than his parents’ lab, back home.
"We are going to run through some exercises to help you settle, before you return to Amity Park."
Danny nodded, grateful that he would be allowed to return. Although he had tried not to dwell on it too much, he'd been aware that was a distinct possibility.
On the other hand… "What do you mean, 'settle?'" he asked as he followed Clockwork to one of the benches, where a clock case and inner workings had been neatly laid out.
“You have just gone through a major change,” said Clockwork. “It will take some time before you become used to it.”
“It’s good, though,” said Danny. “I like it. I wanted it.”
“Even so,” said Clockwork. “Do you not feel weaker, less steady than you usually are?”
“I…” Danny hesitated, thinking. “Yes.”
Clockwork nodded slowly. “That is only to be expected. Even good changes can cause stress and strain. You must be settled, before any other alterations can be made. Sit.”
Danny took the indicated seat, across the table from Clockwork. “You’re going to alter me more?” asked Danny, intrigued by the possibility of being shaped into something even more helpful.
“Perhaps,” said Clockwork.
Danny pouted slightly at the nonanswer, but he knew that Clockwork must have his reasons. Not telling him must have benefits.
“These exercises will help you become more used to your new configuration, more confident in it. Now.” Clockwork folded his hands on the table. “You are going to help me build this clock.”
Danny’s core thrummed to attention. “How?” he asked.
“You will pay close attention to me, my instructions, and the materials you are working with, and nothing else.”
The rest of the world went fuzzy. “Yes,” he said, and even his own voice felt distant.
“Excellent. We will begin with the casing…”
.
.
.
Clockwork let him take the finished clock back to his room at the end of the exercise.
.
.
.
For the next exercise, Clockwork set Danny to work on a small, but somewhat overgrown and neglected, bonsai tree. This time, however, he did not give Danny explicit instructions on its care, but told him to find the information in the library, gently prompting him to look at more than one source before deciding what to do with the tree.
Danny had never found books so interesting before. He’d had no idea that making Clockwork part of his Obsession like this would have such wide-reaching effects.
It took a while for Danny to get all the information he needed, but he did, and he trimmed the bonsai down to size, watered it, fertilized it, and bent the branches into a more aesthetically pleasing shape.
Like the clock, the bonsai tree made its way to his room.
.
.
.
For the third exercise, Clockwork presented him with a blank book and told him to record a detailed history of his life, up until that moment.
Danny had hesitated, then. “There’s a lot I don’t remember,” he admitted, even as the need from his Obsession seemed to crawl into his brain to unearth memories he hadn’t known he had.
“Yes,” said Clockwork, his tone prompting.
“Will you… Will you help me? With the things I don’t remember, I mean.”
“Yes,” said Clockwork. “I will show you how to operate one of the simpler time screens, but you must never use it without my permission.”
Danny nodded, enthusiastically. He liked these exercises. He was learning so much.
.
.
.
Unlike his other two products, the book was whisked away as soon as he’d finished it, disappearing into the folds of Clockwork’s robes. Clockwork then presented him with a tiny vial, no larger than the smallest bone in Danny’s smallest finger.
“What is it?” asked Danny, tilting the vial to the side. The contents looked like water, but there was something about it Danny couldn’t quite put his finger on.
“Waters of the Lethe,” said Clockwork. “Diluted.”
“Am I supposed to drink it?” Danny asked, staring up at Clockwork. The vision of Clockwork as a giant flitted across his memory again.
“People are not supposed to know their whole history. This will only abstract your memory of what you learned here, from the time screens, not your entire memory.”
“I would drink it even if it did,” said Danny.
“I know,” said Clockwork, “but for now, you need only drink this.”
Danny put the vial to his lips without hesitation, and swallowed the water inside. He blinked once, twice, slightly disoriented. “What next?” he asked.
“Next,” said Clockwork, thoughtfully, “I believe you can go home.”
.
.
.
Danny returned to Amity Park as if he had never left, as if nothing significant had changed in himself. He went to school, he fought ghosts, he talked to his friends, he played games, he helped people. Always, he helped.
And he visited Clockwork.
Clockwork almost always had something for him to do, whether that was a big thing, like saving a city from destruction, a small thing, like moving a branch, a mundane thing, like studying, or a confusing thing, like being sent to a Renaissance-era party after gorging himself on strawberries with no other instructions. And, the rare few times Clockwork didn’t have anything for Danny to do, he still treated Danny with gentle care.
Like now. Now, Clockwork carefully measured Danny's body, the width of his chest, the length of his limbs, the depth of his breath, the speed of his heart, the color of his blood. Danny followed his instructions to move and breathe, to stay still, to cough and bleed.
Clockwork patted him on the head, and Danny leaned into the touch until it turned into something more like a stroke, Clockwork’s hand tracing down to cup his cheek and the underside of his jaw.
“Do not grow,” he said, almost absently. “Do not age.”
Danny still wasn’t used to the way his body itself would respond to Clockwork’s instructions. How a few words from him could unlock abilities he would never be able to activate on his own. A shiver swept over him as his very cells seemed to set themselves in place. It felt good, of course, but it was also…
“That is still a little intense for you,” said Clockwork.
Danny made a small, soft noise of agreement. Despite himself, he was half dozing, leaning heavily on Clockwork’s hand. Today had been very long, and he was so comfortable here, where the limits and guidance of his
“I think a more thorough assessment of your physical state is in order,” said Clockwork.
Danny hummed, questioningly.
“We are going to visit your friends in the Far Frozen.”
.
.
.
The yetis looked at Clockwork with suspicion, but did not stop him.
“Hi, Frostbite!” said Danny, cheerfully, throwing himself at Frostbite. Frostbite returned the hug, albeit far more gingerly than usual.
“Hello, great one,” said Frostbite. “Timekeeper.”
Clockwork inclined his head minutely.
“I didn’t know you knew each other,” said Danny, watching the exchange with wide eyes.
“I have brought Daniel for a full physical,” said Clockwork.
“We have a custom of seeing patients alone.”
"I am aware. Daniel."
"Mhm?"
“Answer any question Chief Frostbite has.”
“Okay!”
“Truthfully,” Clockwork added.
“Yes!”
Clockwork nodded. “I expect a full medical report.”
“If he wants us to give you one, it will be done,” said Frostbite.
“I do!” said Danny. Clockwork smiled faintly, and Danny’s core itself seemed to hum in pleasure. He’d done the right thing.
“Very well, great one,” said Frostbite. He picked Danny up and carried him to the medical caves, where he started running through a standard checkup, asking Danny how he was eating, how he was sleeping, the last fight he’d been in.
But Danny had a question of his own.
“You look upset,” said Danny. “Why are you upset?”
Frostbite sighed. “Great one… Are you aware that you have been enthralled?”
Danny kicked his feet. The examination table was sized more for yetis than for human-sized things like Danny, and he felt significantly childlike, sitting on it. “Um, he didn’t use that word, but Clockwork pretty much explained what was happening to me while it was happening.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, he said he was,” Danny searched for the right word, “shaping me so that I saw doing what he wanted as the same as my Obsession.” He tilted his head to one side. “Is that wrong?”
“No, it seems that he did tell you what he was doing.” Frostbite sighed.
“But you think it’s bad that he did it in the first place,” surmised Danny. “That he… enthralled me? Even though I wanted it?”
“It is complicated.” Frostbite made a chair out of ice, and sat so his eyes were level with Danny’s. “Thralls do not typically see anything wrong with their status. Many ghosts do not. Many consider it a positive, or at least a neutral thing. And I am happy, great one, that you have found a way to follow your Obsession that brings you joy and satisfaction. But it is also true that thralls are mistreated, or outright sacrificed, frequently.”
“But for their Obsession. Which is something they’d do anyway. Clockwork isn’t like that, anyway.”
Frostbite sighed heavily. “Not always for their Obsession. The point is,” he continued, before Danny could again protest that Clockwork wasn’t like that, “thralls end in tragedy and suffering, more often than not.”
Danny tilted his head. “What do you mean?”
“Any position where one person has power over another is open to abuse, and the greater the degree of power, the greater the potential for abuse. We ghosts may be… constrained, somewhat, by what we are. By our Obsessions, I should say. But we are still people. People who can make both good and bad choices.”
“Okay,” said Danny. That wasn’t really what it had sounded like when he’d asked Clockwork about free will, but maybe this was just another perspective. It wasn’t like Frostbite was stupid. “Okay, but Clockwork really isn't like that. He’s taking good care of me. And our Obsessions are pretty similar, so I don’t think I’m just going to be sacrificed or whatever. I get why you’re upset,” he added, quickly. “I do! I’d be pretty upset if I thought one of my friends was tricked like that and was getting dragged around for stuff that wasn’t even their Obsession. But it isn’t like that. He even came here to make sure I was okay, didn’t he?”
“He did,” said Frostbite. He still didn’t sound happy. “For a full medical report. Do you know if he plans to alter you?”
“He’s mentioned it,” said Danny with a shrug. The idea of being further modified was thrilling.
Frostbite nodded. “Regardless, I will list the common side effects of thralldom. Let me know if you are experiencing any of these.”
“There are side effects?” asked Danny. “Wait, no, that’s stupid. Of course there are. I passed out when it all, um…” He touched the tips of his fingers together. “Clicked.”
“I see,” said Frostbite. “Was this prompted by Clockwork in any way?”
“He told me to sleep,” said Danny. “But I was definitely passing out anyway. I’ve got a lot of experience with that.”
Frostbite made a hmm deep in his throat and made a note on a pad of paper. Danny leaned forward, gazing at him in interest. He found himself wanting to cuddle in Frostbite’s fur… Not something he normally did. Even if Frostbite was very soft and fluffy.
“One of the typical side effects is more animal behavior or features.”
“Oh,” said Danny, a thought crossing his mind, “are the vulture ghosts Vlad’s thralls?”
“I am unsure,” said Frostbite. “I am unfamiliar with the ghosts you are referencing.”
“It’s not important,” said Danny, shaking his head. “It’s just, I’ve always wondered why they do stuff for him, since he doesn’t seem to pay them, like he does with Skulker.”
“Have you experienced anything like that personally?” prompted Frostbite, gently.
“I don’t think so,” said Danny.
“Lack of interest in other methods of fulfilling your Obsession?”
“Nope,” said Danny. “I’m still doing all my hero stuff.”
“Abnormal emotional states?”
“I’ve been really happy, lately, I guess,” said Danny. “But not really, other than that.”
“Anxiety over the location of your thrall-holder?”
“Mm,” said Danny, thinking. “Not really? Maybe a little bit. Clockwork isn’t really… someone who can be put in physical danger?”
“I see," said Frostbite.
“Difficulty understanding the world around you?”
“No,” said Danny. “Not more than usual.”
“Core pain?”
“At the beginning, but not right now. Clockwork did exercises with me, to help me settle.”
“Alright,” said Frostbite. “It’s time for the more traditional scans and measurements. Are you ready?”
“Yes,” said Danny.
.
.
.
Danny bounced over to Clockwork’s side, sucking on a lollipop Frostbite had given him. A still unhappy-looking Frostbite handed Clockwork a thick packet of paper, which Clockwork vanished into thin air.
“I’m ready to go when you are,” said Danny.
Clockwork nodded, eyes drifting slowly to each of the frowning yetis staring at him.
“I am aware that you are researching a way to break thralls,” said Clockwork.
“It doesn’t work, does it?” asked Danny, thoroughly spooked by the idea.
“No. Not currently, no. It isn’t something you need to worry about,” said Clockwork. It wasn’t really a command or an instruction, so Danny decided not to think about it too much. He had plenty of other things to think about, after all.
"Are you going to try to stop us?" asked Frostbite.
"No," said Clockwork. "Your research is, actually, part of the reason I brought Daniel here today."
Frostbite’s eyes flicked between Clockwork and Danny.
“I’m afraid I do not understand,” he said, finally.
“And that is acceptable. Come along, Daniel.” He began to fly away, and Danny hurried to keep pace with him.
"Are you going to have me do that, if they figure it out?" asked Danny, worried again, despite himself.
"There are scenarios in which it may become useful. I prefer to keep my options open, in these cases."
“But… You’ll only have me do it if it’s more helpful?”
“Of course,” said Clockwork, ruffling Danny’s hair casually. “I wouldn’t even consider it, otherwise.”

Anxiously Waiting... (The Sims 4: Get Famous)
Ari and her mother arrived at their San Myshuno hotel around midnight Monday morning. Junie decided to retire to bed, but Ari was too anxious to sleep. She was meeting with her record label "Dinky Beats" first thing in the morning. Ari fears they're going to drop her for not releasing music timely enough. Despite sending the label plenty of samples of her music to her label (and promising to have her debut EP ready by this summer), they want to her to release something now. Anything. It doesn't matter how talented she is: the show must go on, with or with her.
Ari sat on her hotel bed while her mother slept in the other bed. San Myshuno is one of her favorite places to be, for more reasons than one, but the dread she is feeling in this moment is clouding any other emotion.
buzz buzz
Ari looks over to her phone on the bedside table as the screen lit up with a text message:
"Has the eagle landed yet?"
It's none other than amateur music producer and tech guru, Akira Kibo. Ari and Akira met several months ago during Ari's "Moschino & Co." photoshoot through a mutual friend. Akira works for "Rainy Day Entertainment," a startup tech company based in San Myshuno. He assists with managing the software used at "Moschino & Co." And Ari finds him incredibly attractive. Suddenly, Ari's tense mood was gone and had been replaced with giddy.
"There's no way a man is making me feel like this," Ari muttered to herself, fighting back a huge grin as she composed her reply to Akira:
"Just landed in the city. Bored. Wanna have a jam sesh?"
The shift in their relationship happened weeks ago. Ari has been making waves under her current label, but she's also been sharing and trading ideas with Akira. He thinks -- maybe even more than she does -- that Ari is going to be a global superstar someday, and has been happy to help her with music producing. Ari even told him she was coming to town, but she didn't disclose why. Partly because she was embarrassed, but mostly because she still has no idea what the meeting is about. But before Ari could pull herself out of her thoughts, her phone buzzed again:
"Absolutely. Come through. ;)"
Ari knows that text was harmless; he's always teasing her flirtatiously. But still, Ari feels butterflies in her stomach. She checks the clock sitting on the end table. 1:36 AM.
"On my way."

🏡 welcome to rose + river’s first apartment-
nestled in evergreen harbor, unit #402 at pinecrest apartments is where their story begins.
a one bed / one bath full of charm, cozy corners, and secondhand furniture they pretend is vintage. ⭐
there’s a tiny laundry room rose keeps spotless, a little hallway desk where they “work” (mostly scroll), and just enough room for slow mornings, quiet dinners, and dancing in the kitchen. 🍴
the walls are thin, the sink leaks, and the floors creak a little too loud

but it’s their own little piece of the world. 🛋️ and for now, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be. 🏠🔑

Act 5:20- Proximity (Page 1)
LORE | CHARACTERS | ABOUT / WARNINGS | CHAPTERS
← PREVIOUS | BEGINNING | NEXT →
SPOILER WARNING: block 'divided sims 4 story spoilers' tag if you don't want spoilers whilst scrolling.
[author's note: A few of the points covered in this chapter were ideas from friends, so thank you!
the chapter comes from a very short six-word story I found on deviantART years and years ago: 'proximity kills all your favourite heroes.']
Lydia
There's going to be so much pressure on Josiah. He's incredibly smart, but still far too young to be taking on the kinds of work that Owen does. Josiah is always poring through textbooks, journals and everything else he can get his hands on, but no amount of the written work makes up for practical experience. The children will grow up without a father. Tilly and Alex will be devastated.
He didn't think any of this through. I know he was trying to protect people, but this is what happens when men get a sudden sense of swift justice - they lose all foresight, and their families pay the price. He didn't think about how this would affect his patients, his staff or his family. I want to grab his ghost by the shoulders and scream at him.
I can't lose focus on my rage; once I lose focus on my rage, the despair will set in. The grief will set in. As much as I love him, I don't have time to grieve right now. I have people's lives to save, especially when the witchfinders retaliate.
There's a thud outside, and my heart freezes over until I hear a familiar voice inside of my mind.
Lydia, it's us. I'm outside with Owen. He is still alive.
Valravn's soothing low voice melts the ice in my chest, but I still don't want to imagine what kind of infamy we'll have if everyone knows that gryphons are no longer confined safely in the past.
I open the front door, completely taken aback by Valravn's enormous and majestic true form lying across the floor with my husband tucked under her talons. Her eyes meet mine and I shiver. I almost feel like she's about to devour me.
"Are you certain he's still alive?"
"Certain, Lydia. I would sense it immediately if our connection was severed."
"Did that bastard do this to him?"
"Please, Lydia, try to calm youtself. We would all be better off inside in the warm. I'll explain everything."
Owen is surprisingly light in my arms. He looks paler than usual.
I wipe the blood from his face and lift him gently onto the bed. His steady breathing helps me to settle, but he isn't responding to anything at all, not even to Valravn's voice. She sits atop the bedside table.
"Owen was to be burned alongside two other men for his magic. Eventually, I came in, killed two of the witchfinders and freed the two men and Owen.
I was about to kill Volpe myself, but Owen demanded that he do it in place of me. I tried to talk him out of it once he started to charge his wand, but I couldn't get through to him. It was impossible."
I'm beyond thankful that Volpe is dead, but the weight of the potential aftermath weighs down on me.The witchfinder movement may slow down without Volpe, but there's no guarantee that the next person who tries to take his place won't just start the cycle all over again. He could even be worse than Volpe, if that's even possible.
"Why didn't he just let you do it?"
"I can't tell, Lydia. I don't know whether it was an act of heroism or a personal desire for revenge. Could have been either - or both."
"I don't know why he won't go careful with his magic. He knows it puts a strain on him. He should have let you deal with it."
"The Annorin family have let someone else do their dirty work for years," Valravn explains. "I suppose Owen wanted to take it into his own hands."
"Thank you, Valravn. Without you, I dread to think what would have happened. I feel I owe you an apology for my husband's recklessness."
"I hope you know that I will look after you too, Lydia, and the children. I am bound to Owen as his familiar, but that doesn't mean you can't ask for my help or a listening ear when you need it. I am here to serve the Annorin family, after all."
"You're not our servant, Valravn. Remember that. You're part of the family."
She goes quiet for a moment and moves into a lower position, almost trying to hide her face behind her wings. I wonder if that's another reason Owen took matters into his own hands. He always tells Tilly and Alex that they're not his servants; I doubt he'd want Valravn to feel like she is either.
My thoughts fight amongst each other in my mind. I'm livid with him for his lack of foresight, but at the same time, I can see why he did what he did. Either he did it and found a way to weasel out of it the way an Annorin would, or a less-renowned person would have tried to futilely act against Volpe's reign and be killed as a result.
"I will stay with Owen for as long as I need to. When he wakes up, you'll be the first to know. Please, take care of yourself."
Róisín
Every young witch knows the only way to stay alive is to keep running and never look back.
I did as the deep voice in my mind commanded me to.
I'm still trying to process what I saw - the huge gryphon seemingly speaking to me, landing, killing two men and then nearly killing Volpe. I ran as fast as I could back home at that point.
I don't know what happened back there. I don't know if the gryphon killed Volpe or if Owen did. A sickening dread fills my stomach at the thought of either. I hated Volpe as much as any other witch, but the witchfinders are going to revolt if they know he's dead.
Alistair doesn't even know I'm out - I snuck out to be at the trial and defend the man who tried to save my grandfather who didn't deserve to burn to death for saving people's lives, and yet tonight, there's every chance he committed an act of murder.
I suppose the closer you try to get to the people you admire, the more you see sides of them you wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

i was raised to be outwardly grateful of every gift i got. i think, to a degree, we all are, especially as women. so when my boyfriend of 6 months got me a slightly shitty gift, i accepted it kindly and thanked him warmly.
when that same boyfriend of 9 months got me nothing for my birthday, i swallowed the lump in my throat and accepted his plea of “you didnt tell me what you wanted.”
he got me something useless for our first anniversary, so useless i cant even remember it, i thanked him and smiled, happy that at least he got me SOMETHING, cause something was better than nothing.
that christmas, he got me a ps4 game. i didnt have a ps4, it was a game for HIS ps4 for us to play together. i didnt see the appeal but smiled anyway.
this cycle repeated with shitty gifts. a hot pink blanket to “match” my entirely blue bedroom. a totoro plushie when i didnt even enjoy the movie when we watched it. an avocado plushie because “idk it looked cute.” a pair of fucking panda socks cause “ive only ever seen you wear plain socks.”
and i knew he couldnt afford loads, but i hoped he knew me enough to afford something i liked, or wanted. so, our last year together, i decided to tell him exactly what i wanted for our anniversary to avoid him spending money on things i didnt want then complaining to me how much money he spent. i asked for the Sims 4 Lovestruck expansion pack, i thought it was fitting as it was “love” themed, but was also something id use and appreciate. i didnt get it. instead i got a poster with a map of where our first date was, and galaxy chocolate (i hate galaxy chocolate.) the card was insincere, brought off moonpig that just said “worlds best gf” and inside was a messily scrawled “i love you”.
and i smiled, but this time it felt like a punch to the face. he couldnt even get me the 1 thing i desperately wanted, even asked for. because he knew best. thats what all this was telling me. it was telling me how he thought he knew what i wanted better than i did. or even worse, he didnt know what i wanted at all, which meant he didnt know me at all. and if that were the case, what were the last 3 years all about? what was the point in them?
and i felt like i couldnt get angry over shitty gifts because some people didnt get gifts at all. but i can get angry over them, over gifts that prove he didnt know me at all, gifts that show how he really didnt care. so yes, i was angry, but i hid it. i shouldnt have hidden it, be angry, be ungrateful, dont be a people pleaser.
the gifts he got me, id expect to get from that one aunt that i see once a year, something insincere, something disingenuous, something boring. not from the man who “loved me.”
and so when my friends with benefits, a guy who i didnt think knew me at all, got me a book i wanted for christmas, i cried. he didnt understand why i cried. it was from a charity shop and probably cost him £3 at most. i told him that i hadnt got him a present and he said “i didnt expect one, i saw it and remembered you loved Austen.” the material value of the second hand, slightly tattered book, meant nothing because it just proved that he listened to me. and hes not my boyfriend of 3 years, hes my friend of 3 months who i occasionally hook up with. that book is still unread on my bedside table, i like looking at it. it reminds me that someone listens to me talk about my interests, that someone cares enough to actually listen.
