The Beatles and Leonard Bernstein
Daddy loved the Beatles, too, which made me particularly happy. In the swimming pool the following summer, he came up with a third part to “Love Me Do,” so that he, Alexander, and I could sing the song together in three-part harmony, right there in the corner of the deep end. On one of his Young People’s Concerts, Daddy explained the A-B-A structure of sonata form by singing a Beatles song. Oh, how the girls in the audience squirmed and squealed as he accompanied himself on piano, singing “And I Love Her” in his not-so-McCartneyesque voice! He must have known he was onto something, because he began regularly incorporating the Beatles, and other pop music, in his Young People’s Concerts, to illustrate his various points. It kept the kids in the audience interested, just as it had for Alexander and me. (We, and later Nina, were in effect the ongoing guinea pigs for Daddy’s Young People’s Concert ideas.) John Lennon was Daddy’s favorite Beatle, as he was mine. We were both enchanted by Lennon’s book of poetry, “In His Own Write,” and pored over it together. Daddy invented a singing game for Alexander and me to play with him while the three of us lay wedged into the hammock under the big maple tree after dinner. We would invent a round, à la “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” using Lennon’s poem “The Moldy Moldy Man.” Whoever started the round got to choose what kind of melody it would be: sad, perky, waltz, military. After the first line — “I’m a moldy moldy man…” — the second person had to come in, echoing person number one. Then the third person would come in. The fun of the game was, of course, that you couldn’t possibly repeat the line you’d just heard while simultaneously listening for the next one. It was deliciously hopeless, and a raucous shambles every time — always punctuated at the end by person number three dolefully singing the last line all alone after the other two had finished: “… I’m such a humble Joe.” Eventually, word got back to John Lennon — or to his manager or press agent or somebody — that Leonard Bernstein was thinking about possibly setting some of the “In His Own Write” poems to music. This led to Daddy being invited to meet Lennon backstage during a dress rehearsal for “The Ed Sullivan Show.” It was by now the summer of 1965, and the Beatles were returning to the U.S. to make their highly anticipated second Ed Sullivan appearance. Naturally, our father asked if he could bring his two older children with him to the rehearsal.
- "Famous Father Girl", Jamie Bernstein - 2018
Here is Leonard Bernstein being enchanted by The Beatles, in Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, 1967.
youtube
Even though his viewpoint is understandably informed (and thus imo limited) by his classical background, he appreciated pop music a lot more than others his age at the time did.
I love everything about this, but honestly, to hear my favorite 20th century composer comparing Paul McCartney to Schumann is just...wild.

Rereading The Terror
Oh gang... oh gang you're not going to like this one...! :((( Big spoiler at the end so I'll put it all under the cut just in case.
Chapter Forty-Seven: Peglar
As they strike camp and begin to haul the boats out onto the ice toward the new leads, Peglar reflects on the near-mutiny - he heard all about it from Bridgens of course who saw the whole thing first-hand from the medical tent where he'd been assisting Goodsir. Peglar always thought of Hickey, Manson, Aylmore et al as treacherous shits and so he's more surprised and offended to find out about the previously loyal men who also took part - his Erebus counterpart Robert SInclair, for instance, and Reuben Male who he describes as "a dependable man, but strong-willed. Very strong-willed."
Hauling across the ice again is hard-going, not just because of all the peaks and troughs to negotiate but also because it's getting thinner. Private Daly, scouting ahead to test said thickness, falls straight though into the water at one point - Goodsir has him stripped naked then and there on the ice, bundled up with two other men in layers of blankets and sleeping bags and even then he only just survives.
Peglar is worried of course, and the thought of open water makes his heart flutter which in turn has him reflecting on a childhood including scarlet fever and chronic chest pains. He's been so crippled with his throughout his life that he's often had to climb the rigging one-handed due to the shooting pains in his left arm - "The other foretopmen thought he was showing off."
As they progress further, Crozier places a boat hauled by Lieutenant Hodgson, Hickey, Manson, and Aylmore among others, at the head of the procession and in the position of greatest risk. Every man there knows it's a punishment and Peglar hasn't much sympathy at all: "Peglar thought that young Hodgson looked as if he might weep. He knew how hard it must be to be in your twenties and know that your Naval career was over. Serves him right thought Peglar. He'd spent decades in a navy that hanged men for mutiny and lashed them for the mere thought of mutiny, and Harry Peglar had never disagreed with either the rule or the punishment."
Once they final reach the open water proper, Crozier assigns Peglar to the boat that will be lowered into it to scout the lead out fully. Lieutenant Little will lead the men, along with Ice Master Reid and a select group of seamen including William Wentzell, Alexander Berry, and Henry Sait. Crozier expresses trust in Peglar specifically, and clearly values his input on the viability of the lead - "I need a good man on the sweep oar and a third assessment as to whether this lead is a go."
Once in the water, their journey is relatively uneventful. The lead narrows at several points and is blocked at others but every time they manage to find a way past until finally, they emerge into a massive lake of clear blue water in the middle of the ice with several huge flat bergs floating in it. "We could camp on 'aton and have plenty of room left over," said Henry Sait, one of the Terror seamen at the oars. "We don't want to camp," said Lieutenant Little from the bow. "We've had enough camping for a fucking lifetime. We want to go home."
They literally start to sing with happiness as they row their way out into the lake but soon enough that joy fades as they find no way out of it except the way they came in. Little even boosts Berry up onto Wentzell's shoulders to scout all round with a telescope but the ice is thick and impenetrable. Dejected, they make their way back to their entry point, which they marked with a pike.
But something is wrong... It's Peglar who notices it - a big ice boulder right next to that way-marking pike that wasn't there before... Little understands what that means straight away, orders the men to row backwards away from it, but it's already far too late. Then comes one of the simplest but best and most utterly chilling lines in this whole godforsaken book - "The ice boulder turned."

Most-Listened of March 2024
[last month]
This was such an exciting month of releases--Purplekiss, Day6, BLEACHERS?? Chung Ha gave us a couple of songs, Nina Suárez came back out of nowhere, Lucy dropped a single, OLIVIA RODRIGO IS BACK?? I've been super excited for the J-Hope album, too, but I haven't been emotionally ready to check it out, yet, since I want to have the energy to really love it! Not to mention the Seori EP-- PLUS Bol4 and StayC both dropped some covers of huge 2019 k-pop hits.
And that isn't all. The highlights of my month were seeing Bruce Springsteen (only my favorite artist ever.) and Gregory Alan Isakov in concert(s)! So honestly, I'm a little overwhelmed by just how exciting music is right now. (It doesn't help that this month gave me my first album of the year candidate, too!!) This post will be my opportunity to go a little wild, then :)
1. Leopardos -- Ine Güemes
I should not enjoy this listening experience as much as I do. That whistling noise should annoy me by now, after all these listens, right? ... Right? Nope. I love it. This song is so soothing, it's literally the musical equivalent of a deep breath.
2. Appaloosa Bones -- Gregory Alan Isakov
Concert prep + THE sulking song this month. Look, I'm a guy who needs my daily floor time (floor time. perhaps you require it.), and it always involves considerable sulking. (At this rate, you're gonna see a sulking song on this list every single month. It's a tradition now!) I've been losing it about "Was I that gone? / Man, I hope not / Glad you found me when you did" and "The pages slow / in the room I called your name" and "They haven't made no pill / To get us across the winter time" ...
3. All Things End -- Hozier
You know what ended? My eight-week class. *sigh of relief* All things end, truly! Now I just need the reminder that this semester will end, too...
4. Death To My Hometown -- Bruce Springsteen
I'd never heard this one before, but I ASCENDED when I heard it live (the horns section was. fantastic.) and I left it on repeat all month post-concert.
5. The Ledge -- Fleetwood Mac
This song makes me proud of my music taste, honestly--see, I can like weird experimental stuff, too! It sounds wonderfully, comfortingly crowded--like the ambient noise from a nearby café, or like falling asleep with the TV on. I don't know, it's just a feeling I find myself really enjoying. I'm also SO deeply in love with the round-style singing (see: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" rounds in middle school choir) Fleetwood Mac sometimes does (see: my obsession with "Paper Doll"), and they do it in this song !!
6. I Don't Want to Know -- Fleetwood Mac
I like this one for the same reason I like "Second Hand News"--that cheerful self-deprecation just never fails to draw me in. ("Second Hand News" is still better, though!)
7. Smart -- Le Sserafim
Does anyone NOT like this song? I missed the Eve Psyche hype train last year, so this one's hitting me doubly hard. I think the sweeter tone of "Smart" suits Le Sserafim's vocals much better, and the production is just plain adorable! This has been my go-to song during classes, when I need something to cheer me up without making me too overwhelmed.
8. Luz -- Ine Güemes
That vocal processing is SUCH a standout--so soft and hazy and fluffy, just a fascinating texture when you really focus on it, but endlessly pleasant when you leave it on loop and zone out, too. (Look, I REALLY loved this album this month.)
9. Nota de Voz -- Los Hermanos Laser
Classic indie boy music! I like "Azul Plateado" from this album, too, and I have a feeling the whole album will hit for me during the summer--I tend to like that exhausted-sounding alt-rock stuff a whole lot around July & August :)
10. Light Sprite -- Baby Pantera, Isabella Lovestory
Thanks for the rec, @pocima !!
11. I Am Right On Time -- Bleachers
This is a weirdly muted album for Bleachers (especially on the heels of "Stop Making This Hurt" and "How Dare You Want More" from their last album), and this is the most weirdly muted of them all--I really feel like it should be... more, somehow? But it's still quite a cathartic listening experience, and I keep coming back to it!
12. Really Like You -- Gyubin
I've started giving myself 30 minutes of reading time in the mornings, to help me wake up and not be completely miserable about it, so I've been reading a whole bunch of webtoons. (Hell, maybe I'll read a book one day!) This one's the perfect cutesy webtoon soundtrack, and I think it might be here because I left it on repeat while reading Blooming Season?? (I just finished catching up with Jackson's Diary, and I think I'm gonna start Death of a Pop Star next!) Anyway, Gyubin sounds lovely here, can't wait for a comeback!
13. Self Respect -- Bleachers
The production on this song is just SO exciting overall!! But I'm mostly here for the saxophone. God, it's not even that much of the song but it's gorgeous !!!
14. Nieve Sin Fin -- Ine Güemes
Nice aesthetic piano :)
15. Rush -- Twice
I love how dizzying this song is--it's chaotic and overwhelming in the most wonderful way! I was a little disappointed by it when I first listened to the album, I think because their vocals here are much softer than usual. When I let myself get swept away in the production, though, I totally get the appeal.
Five-Star Songs (& Albums!) This Month
BBB -- Purplekiss (the tiktok-music trend finally got me last year--against my will, admittedly. unfortunately for me, "bbb" is a fantastic example of that easy-listening, viral-tiktok sound from a group i'm already obsessed with, so of course i'm a huge fan. great vocal performances and silky songwriting? yeah, it's great--the muted aesthetic doesn't bug me at all--and i actually kind of love the super-short horn sections in the chorus. they're surprisingly full-sounding!)
Beam Beam -- Jeon Soyeon (i didn't get this one at all when it first came out, but i've warmed up to it over the years--and this month it just HIT. it's the perfect showcase of soyeon's energy, and it's such a rush!!)
Death To My Hometown -- Bruce Springsteen (five stars bc it has the words "robber barons" in it!!)
Girl I've Always Been -- Olivia Rodrigo (i keep underestimating olivia rodrigo's power as a performer. of course she could make this country-sounding track work. of course she could make it my favorite from the album in an instant. who am i to question??)
Hey Joe -- Bleachers (a sing-along for the politically disillusioned. happy 2024, fellow usamericans. well, at least the harmonies here are delightful!)
Jesus is Dead -- Bleachers (i mentioned that this album is unusually muted for bleachers--not dull as in 'boring in terms of production or songwriting', but dull as in dead-eyed and zombie-like. the vocal delivery, especially, is unusually bland and flat. "jesus is dead" is definitely the best use of this half-asleep, grayscale aesthetic on the album--a song as hopeless and monotone as its delivery. it's strange and stylish and messy, too, AND there's also a sax solo ?? and it works great ?? i admire it so so so much--i'm very surprised this didn't make the most-listened list, i've been looping it a whole bunch.)
The Ledge -- Fleetwood Mac
Self Respect -- Bleachers (re: saxophone.)
White Rabbit -- Jefferson Airplane (i don't think it's much of a hot take at all to say this one is fantastic. i heard it for the first time in february, and i've been completely obsessed since!!)
Heráldica -- Saramalacara (okay, i've had like. a week. with this album, but it was love at first listen--and "humo" already had my heart, anyway. the atmospherics are breathtaking, the production crisp and intense, and saramalacara's voice // the vocal production here fits SO well!! there's a song called ".tumblr" that's definitely worth checking out, though i enjoy every song on here !! except "_cuervos". i admire that one but god it disturbs me i never want to hear it again.)
Qué Nos Mantiene Despiertos -- Ine Güemes (first album of the year candidate of 2024 !!! not much of a surprise, i'm sure, given my top 15. more breathtaking atmospherics, but in the exact opposite direction of heráldica! this album is full of really unique textures, but all that chaos doesn't make it any less soothing. each song is distinct, but they all come together into this sweet, fluffy youtube-lofi-mix type of experience--and look, i'm a college student. could i ask for anything more in an album?)

Mer Fics
~Mer Fics: We got mermaids, sirens, leviathans, seamonsters and selkies. Are you the fish? Are they the fish? Doesn’t matter it goes on this list.Celestial Omens (that really like Fishsticks) by BamSara
 archiveofourown.org/works/38791902/chapters/96999486#workskin
When you are ten years old, you find two creatures, bloodied and injured, trapped a net on the beach near your home. You save them, make friends with them, and return them to the sea, leaving you to wonder later if your friends with the Sun colored scales and fins that shone like the full Moon were real or imagined up by a childhood of loneliess.
Time passes. You hear stories of monsters, Sirens in the water, one that is a good omen if spotted, promising your safe voyage as long as you respect the rules of the ocean, and one that sinks ships and eats people for fun. Just folktales meant to scare children.
A decade later, they return the favor, though they don't plan on leaving you so easily this time.

You see a fish, but the fish isn’t really a fish, because he looks up at you with big yellow eyes, wide with fright. Large black pupils dart around frantically. He’s small, less than half your size, which surprises you. You know mers are supposed to be big sea monsters that sink boats or cause storms, but you don’t see a monster. You think of a baby while staring at his chubby round face, creased with fear, and his small tail.

In a political move against Alterra, the Mongolian States sent your ship out to build a new phazegate in the far reaches of the Ariadne Arm. You were equipped with everything you needed and then some. Now, the long five year journey was nearly over, and after a quick stop at planet 4546-B, you would begin construction within the very star system. But you did not expect everything to fall apart before your very eyes, at least, not this fast. And certainly not so violently.
Now trapped on an oceanic planet, you must figure out how to survive or die trying. As you continue and push through the various flora and fauna, you find that you are not as alone as you first thought.

Pulled from the sea 5 years ago, I was tied up, beaten, and sold to owner after owner, each deciding I was too dangerous to keep. Back then, I was strong, able to break bones and tear flesh with ease, singing to lure humans to their demise. It's what my kind was made to do, kill humans.
But no more. Kept in increasingly small tanks, barely fed, and unable to swim, I started to weaken.
Eventually, I was dumped here. It was some kind of oddities collection. My owner had other humans pay to look at his strange assortment of items he had gathered from around the world.
Then one day I encountered two strange humanoid creatures that resembled the Sun and the Moon and my life started to change for the better.

Underneath the glowing eyes, a great maw opened to hiss at you, baring several rows of needle-like fangs, wicked looking and sharp and also glowing in the blacklight. As the thing hissed, the cries started up again, more frantic this time, and accompanied by- it almost sounded like scratching?
And it was coming from behind you.
The bleeding creature had never been the one wailing.

After a foolish mistake leads to you getting captured by humans, you're trapped in a large facility built for the sole reason of studying and experimenting on marine life. Most specifically - mers. With danger at every corner you have to remain vigilant. From the tests they put you though to the lucky escape, you can't afford to get distracted... but unfortunately the yellow mer you've befriended is taking up more of your thoughts than you originally planned. It was supposed to be a normal expedition like any other, but something goes wrong and the ship crash-lands. Now you’re stranded on an ocean planet with no way of going home. How long can you survive until you can call for help and leave this planet?

You're setting foot on another planet. It would be cool, if it weren't for the fact that it was because you were crash landing with the rest of the Aurora onto an uninhabited planet with about.. 99.999% ocean as its surface.
You boarded the Aurora to go on a vacation, but oh well, you're stranded. Might as well start exploring, scuba diving sounds good, does it not? Just when you thought you could drop all the stuff you learned in school. What are the odds?
Of course, the locals have their own thing to say about the new alien on their turf. It's almost hilarious how hostile they are.
But, as with everything. We have our exceptions, two, actually.
So, what will it be then? Perhaps your odds aren't too bad on a planet of supposedly hostile oceanic monsters.

You didn't MEAN to pull up a merchild from the sea. It just bit the bait meant for the fishes, that's all! But now here you are, playing and singing songs with the little tyke after they followed you home to the shore. Even the other one followed, though only after knocking you off your boat the first time. You’re pretty sure they were brothers or something since they stick reeeaal close to each other.
Cripes, these kids were cute. They seemed to adore you too, despite the second one being really cold in the beginning. That's okay though, it was fine. You loved them, you really did! But even so, you couldn’t help but worry about their parents. Fully grown sirens get SUPER protective of their children, but you’ve yet to see neither tail nor fin of mom and dad. Where were these kids’ parents? You weren’t stupid, they HAD to be nearby. No one had ever heard of a mer who just up and left their children alone like this, so where the heck were these kids’ guardians??
It's only when four arms cage you in and threaten to capsize your tiny boat that you realize, maybe you shouldn't have asked.

Taking a vacation to where you lived when younger, you fondly remember the two tiny mer, and hope they are doing all right wherever they are.
When you wander the shore near your hotel, during the day or at night, you start to find little trinkets here and there, along with an occasional dead sea creature. Hello! I have learned so much about whaling and whalers from your blog, and it’s gotten me curious about this part of nautical history. If you’re able to answer and interested in rambling some, I have a question! How did this whole big industry, well, start? Taking down a whale from a ship, processing it, and bringing it back to shore seems like such an enormous and implausible undertaking. Do you know what early whaling was like, and how it evolved to the relatively well-oiled machine it became? Thank you for your time!!
Oh sure thing! This will be a quick n’ dirty overview of the scope of the New England whale fishery (which came to dominate the world in terms of whaling), and existed from the 17th-19th centuries (with some straggling holdouts in the early 20th century).
Europeans had been commercially Right whaling for longer, particularly the Basques, Dutch, and English. So by the time colonizers came to North America there was already an understanding of the value of whale parts. And, off New England, there were also waters full of whales that hadn’t yet been bothered by the industry. In the early 1600s New England colonists didn’t hunt whales. There were so many of them that a whale washing up on the beach wasn’t an unusual occurrence. Everyone would just be like ‘YAY ALRIGHT!’ and process it there on the beach. And that was fine for a time. In the late 1600s though they began shore whaling. This process was both observationally referenced from and taught by indigenous people—the Shinnecock on Long Island and the Wampanoag in Massachusetts, to name some—who had been subsistence whaling off the coast for centuries. With this type of whaling, a lookout would be stationed ashore and would sing out when a whale was seen. Then people would row out in light boats, kill it, and tow it back to land. There the blubber would be stripped and processed in a tryworks set up on shore (big cauldrons in a brick oven). Nantucket really started to solidify itself as a center for whaling during this time because it was farther out to sea and whale migration paths were just off the coast.
By the mid 18th century, tryworks started to be built right on the ship which enabled processing at sea instead. Larger ships were built, the voyages were longer as old cruising grounds were overfished, and American whalers just…traversed the entire world in pursuit of whales as the technology allowed for it. British politicians complained about how American whalers had a foothold in every ocean they found themselves in, and warned that it might make the colonies a bit more powerful than the British would like. In 1791 American whalers were rounding Cape Horn for the first time to get to the Pacific and what would become the most popular whaling grounds. There, they were no longer after just right whales, but more so for the sperm whale and the spermaceti in their heads from which the most superior oil and candles were manufactured. Spermaceti really changed the economic game, and the pursuit and sale of it was what led to whaling having such a huge part in the American economy. Then, new cruising grounds were broken in 1848 up in the Arctic, with the hunt for the ‘newly discovered’ bowhead whales. Some voyages dabbled in the Indian ocean, especially in the last legs of the industry as other locations got overfished, but it wasn’t the most popular destination.
In terms of the dominant US port by this point, the heart of the world’s whaling shifted from Nantucket to New Bedford in the 19th century. This was partly due to big losses to the Nantucket fleet during the American Revolution and War of 1812, but also because of New Bedford’s deep harbor and connections to mainland resources (trees! shipbuilding!) and mainland markets. A lot of old Nantucket families moved there and by the mid 1850s New Bedford was the richest city per capita in the world, and whaling became the country’s 5th largest economic sector. 1830s-1850s was the golden period of US whaling. Then the discovery of petroleum in the US happened. And then the loss of dozens of whaleships during the Civil War, both at the hands of Confederate raiders targeting them, but also from whaling captains deliberately sinking their ships to blockade Charleston Harbor. Lastly, in 1871, a significant portion of the fleet was lost in the Arctic, being bound up in ice. These were the three nails in the coffin for the industry as a whole. By the end of the 1920s it was kaput.
The last issue of the Whalemen’s Shipping List (1843-1914) bid adieu to its readers on December 29th, 1914, exemplifying the state of the industry in their farewell:
“THE LAST ISSUE—Often in the career of a reporter it is part of the days work to write the obituary of a man, to say a few kind words concerning his activities in business, public office or social life. Rarely does the occasion arise when one is permitted to pass on the life of an institution.” [The writer then gave an overview of the story of the US fishery, before coming to the closing paragraph.] “And a good journal goes the way of many a staunch old whaling bark. It has outlived its usefulness, there is no demand for it; its subscription list has fallen off and it is not self-sustaining. So then the Whalemen’s Shipping List and Merchants Journal is to be hauled out on the beach, its activities at an end, yet we shall expect to hear, when news comes in of one surviving whaler in trouble, sunk or disabled, “Where’s the last Shipping List?” and look up to see the shipnews man, through force of habit, asking for his Bible that he may find the correct text.”
Quick and dirty, I say, as I write almost 1k words. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO BE SUCCINCT…every whaling post demands a narrative arc from me; I can’t help it.

Reese / アイネ, Clarisse / クライネ and Legion / ローロー
Reese and Clarisse are two of Eremiya's assassins in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. Clarisse is a form of Clarissa, a name originally carried by nuns in the Order of Saint Clare. This seems to relate to Eremiya's former service as a bishop. The name Reese was likely used in localization to make the sisters' names rhyme.
In Japanese, Reese's name is アイネ (rōmaji: aine), and Clarisse's name is クライネ (rōmaji: kuraine). Put together, their names reference Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, his most famous serenade and perhaps his most famous composition in general.
Legion is one (or many?) masked assassin(s) under Eremiya. The name is in reference to an anecdote from the New Testament: Jesus and his disciples come across a man possessed. During exorcism, Jesus asks for the name of the demon present. The response is a plethora of demons identifying as 'Legion'. The name was selected in localization to relate to the numerous brothers that make up Legion.
In Japanese, Legion is named ローロー (rōmaji: rōrō), romanized as Roro. Like Eine and Kleine, this is a musical reference: the name comes from the classic nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat, with common adaptations of the name being ボートを漕ごう (rōmaji: bōto wo kogou; lit. row a boat) or ローローローユアボート (rōmaji: rōrōrōyuabōto). The song is a popular choice to teach children rounds, a type of musical composition in which many voices sing the same melody while starting at different points. This may be indicative of Legion's behavior: multiple bodies with the same goal and habits, but able to work separately from the others.

I wrote a children's round (A song sung in two or three parts that harmonize) and put it in the book.
It has actual music. (I wrote the lyrics months ago, but just now created a melody for it tonight.)
Tumblr media
Yune says it's a mikran children's round bout a mythical bird that shines brighter than the stars and sings when it's happy. Seeing and hearing the kunabee's song will bring you good luck.
He's mostly right about the meaning.
IN REALITY.......
it was created over a thousand years ago by the altaran-humans and adopted by the mik. The masakans later adopted it. It's now a very well known round akin to 'Row Row Row Your Boat." The altarans pushed for this so the song - part of their culture - wouldn't be forgotten like they were.
Tumblr media
KUNABEE. A silly name for a beautiful creature of myth. A kunabee is an invisible (to all but those who can see the Source Field), diaphanous, large stellar-avian bearing a slight resemblance to a manta ray with a long glowing tail as though on fire, resembling the trail of a shooting star. A kunabee's coloquial name is "living star," or "starburn." It's made of blue light (source energy) exuding from a semi-transparent body with the viscosity of jelly, and moves with a graceful fluidity. It has small eyes, but can only see through the Field. It's song resembles the floating music of whale song. It can only be heard in an atmosphere, under water, or in space - and only by someone who's living source is in tune with the Field.
Kunabee exist in the blueshift frequency - the wavelength upon which the Source Field (the life of the galaxy), Will and Terra's power, and the living source of altaran-humans lives; their energy, or souls.
Kunabee are ancient - possibly immortal (they came about when the galaxy was formed, so it's like a living part of the Source Field itself - the life of the galaxy). They love to have fun. They're rare, but can be spotted anywhere from the atmosphere, to open space, to beneath the oceans, to the upper atmospheres of gas giants, and hyperspace.
Tumblr media
Usually someone will only see one, but they live in flocks. Encountering a flock is rare. Again, only someone who can use their source can see them. Thus, to 98% of the galaxy, they're a myth.
THE SONG.... The kunabee is considered the freest, most carefree, joyful entity in the galaxy, and thus envied by the altarans. Seeing one or hearing one gives you an instant feeling of euphoria. Kunabee are associated with everything good about the galaxy. Nothing holds a kunabee down. It is the epitome of unbridled freedom.
The song "Kunabee" has a happy-go-lucky, bouncy, interweaving melody mimicking the being itself.
The song is akin to songs sung by enslaved people containing secret code messages, meanings, and desires within the lyrics only they would understand. ((I've been a singer all my life. When I learned of this historical fact in grade school when we performed "Pick a Bail 'a Cotton" (I was about 12), the concept fascinated me. I found them inventive, but the stories behind them broke my heart.))
Tumblr media
SEEING a kunabee is an omen that you'll be blessed with good fortune. HEARING the song of a kunabee in conjunction with seeing it means it has sensed you, sensed your heart to be good, and gave you its song. To hear its melodious voice means you will have good luck for the rest of your life. Even if the event seems like bad luck, the outcome will be very beneficial to you.
And since altaran-humans can live for hundreds of years, that's a very, very long time.
THE KUNABEE... It isn't a myth. It's real. Yune's seen it twice, and heard its song both times - once when he was 10 through the clouds of a retreating thunderstorm, and once when he was 20 flying a single seat ship through the upper atmosphere of Mikra. He quickly scanned it once he snapped out of the awestruck daze of seeing it, but the sensors didn't pick up anything. Of course no one believed him both times. No one else could see it. And sensors can't detect the Source Field.
Will and Terra saw and heard one while looking up through the dome of the lab they weren't allowed to leave. None of the scientists believed them, let alone could tell them what they saw. Yune, Will, Terra, and Selka (thanks to some help) encountered a flock in space.
THE SONG MY DUMBASS SPENT WAY TOO MUCH TIME CREATING. (it's now 2:22am)
Yune sings this to help Will overcome his fear. (excerpt below.)
Tumblr media
He noticed Will kept a vice grip on the light, “Ease up, Sparky, before you break it.”
Will loosened his death grip and tried not to be afraid. A light in the dark kept the monsters away. That was one reason out of many that he hated the lab; it was always bright. The monsters lived in it.
The darkness needled through Will’s resolve to fight his fear. He stopped. His feet stuck to the cave floor.
Yune turned around, “Sparky?”
"I'm fine," he squeaked. He clutched the light close, “M-me and the dark don’t get along.”
“Well, keep that light on and you’ll be ok,” he said, “We just gotta keep walking.”
Will nodded, “Right. I’m - I’m not scared,” yet he stayed rooted in place.
That was a bald-faced lie that Yune could detect in a second. He realized he was dealing with a very real phobia here. Will had to be in a continuous state of fright in this cave system on top of what he felt losing Terra. He needed to do something to help the kid keep his mind off it.
“Hey. You know, this is kind of an adventure. What we need is an adventuring song.”
Will’s voice trembled, “Like what?”
“Well, what songs do you know?”
He thought hard, forcing his mind to work, “Um...uh..., ‘Take...take Me Out To The Ball Game?’”
Yune hesitated, “Uh… culture is going to be a problem here, isn’t it,” he went through his own mental inventory for something simple to learn, “Ok, how about 'Kunabee.' Did they teach you that?’”
He shook his head, too afraid to speak more than an attempted, “Ku-na-wa-na-huh?”
“Siffon, do you know that one?”
“Yes. Kanera taught me. It’s a mikran round, right?”
“Yeah, it’s one I used to sing as a kid. Just follow along, Sparky. you’ll get it,” Yune gave the petrified kid a gentle nudge forward to get his frozen legs moving and started singing an upbeat, bouncy tune;
“Kunabee, kunabee, bright and free,
Do you have a song for me?
Fly, kunabee, fly, kunabee,
Oh, how lucky my life will be.”
As they sang, Will’s fear melted away.
The trio walked through the dimly lit cave with Yune’s medium tenor leading the bright melody for Siffon’s and Will’s higher voices turning it into a three part round. This had the added benefit of easing his own fear.
It was a little bit of a harmonic mess, but one Will felt happy to be a part of. Yune was right; he did feel a bit better.
Terra had said Will was a good singer, but he never believed her. Now that he heard how cleanly Yune could carry a tune, and how pure Siffon’s soprano rang through the cave, he wasn’t embarrassed about his own skill. Mik-human songs were a lot like the ones he knew. Thankfully, the three of them weren’t tone deaf.
He taught them ‘Row Row Row Your Boat,’ and Siffon taught them a yondi round called ‘The Old Man and the Pibblebonk.”
But he forgot to ask Yune what a kunabee is.

Ahhh yay! I’m so glad you all had the best time!!! What were sections/seats for each show? I think I’ll be in the same boat. One show will bad seats and one with good seats lol but I’d think the show would still be amazing no matter where!
Anonymous said: Can I ask where your seats were Friday that you said we're awful? I figured with him being in the round you wouldn't really have a bad seat.
Friday night we were in 225 row 23 which is the second to last row of that section and nearly middle of the stadium looking straight on to the center stage. I mean, they’re high up there I’m not gonna lie. But not only that, the box seats blocked more than half of the big screen, and whoever was controlling the little tv’s that were straight in front of us was different from the big screen and half the time wasn’t even on him. Also the music honestly just didn’t reach up there the same way, which I’ve never experienced before. I could hear the stadium singing/screaming way more than I could actually hear Harry. Like my ears weren’t ringing when we left and I could hear every single thing the girls behind us said lol we still had a good time don’t get me wrong, just personally wasn’t my fav.
The second night we were in 223 row 7 which was a massive difference. From that row we had full view of the big screen, plus we could just see him really well on stage too like we didn’t have to rely on the screen the whole time.
At the end of the day it’s definitely nice just being in the same room as him regardless lol I could just really tell the difference probably since the shows were back to back yanno.

When you set boundaries around your heart
You set standards in your life.
Make a mothsfucka do Olympics just to get your heart.
Make their relay race be grocery store runs, errand jumping, fast food pick up, errand jumping, dry cleaning, errand jumping, and so much more
Till they prove that the race they ran was solely for you and not for the sex you can give.
Make them shotput your heavy load off of your shoulders -
Your mind needs a break.
Make em pole vault over all the boundaries you set for last players,
Dance elegantly with ribbons like a gymnast to show you how special you are and how deeply they are in interest.
Make them balance on a beam with no shoes,
Giving them no hints, tips, or clues.
Make them dive deep to rescue you.
Swim fast just to catch up to you.
Make their stopwatch break because they'll break all records for you.
Make them luge, snowboard, skateboard, Tour de France.
Make their triathlon have a triathlon.
And when they ask baby when are you going to ease up
Give them weights and see if they can be the strongman and lift those weights up.
Please don't let up!
Make them run with fire and say for once that it's hot and they need a break with some water and a snack.
And when they do say this
And they will.
Make errand jump again. .
Make them skate on ice,
Make them go 12 rounds in a fight,
Make them play against a whole other country called your friends just to see if they add in or divide.
Make them fish for hours, row a boat, sing your Spiritual Anthem.
Make their bobsleigh.
Make them get into another fight after you check em from being in the penalty box.
And not a fight with you but a fight for right.
Make them win Bronze and Silver.
And just when they think they're going to get Gold
Make them curl.
Make them hurl.
Make them cry.
Make them beg.
Train them to make you their fulfilled destiny.
And when they learn
Finally ready to give up but won't because you're just enough and all they ever needed and wanted.
Give them a Score and give them Gold
AFTER
They go through another round of more Olympics.
Then once they make it through two times.
Give them a Two Time Gold Winner
For making your heart the most important thing on this Earth.

Byopia Press Advent Calendar 2022: Day Twenty-one and Singing in Circles
Byopia Press Advent Calendar 2022: Day Twenty-one and Singing in Circles
Today is the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. In The Before Times we would celebrate the beginning of longer days by getting together with friends for a potluck supper followed by singing. I like part singing, and one of the easiest ways to sing in parts is to sing Rounds. You probably sang Rounds in school: Row, Row, Row Your Boat and Frere Jacques, perhaps. Today’s little book…

Genre: Hip hop Songs: "Riding the Range", "There's an Echo In This Canyon", "Texas, Here I Come", "Buffalo Girls and Boys" (tune: " Buffalo Gals") In the end, the trio learn that the bandit was actually Tyrone. Thinking a bandit stole it, she, Tasha, and Pablo head west. He has mistakenly taken Uniqua's jumprope. Genre: 1920s jazz Songs: "It's Great to Be a Ghost!", "What's So Scary 'Bout That?", "Hide and Go Boo", "When I'm Booin'" (tune: " When You're Smiling")Ĭowboy Tyrone is on his way to Texas for a hoedown. In a haunted house, ghosts Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone try to scare unsuspecting stranger Tasha. Other background music: Every time Uniqua sets up the Power Rope, the four first notes of Fritz Kreisler´s Liebesfreud are heard. Songs: "Secret Agent", "Sneaking and Hiding", "The Treasures of Ancient Egypt", "Laser Limbo Tango" (tune: " Limbo Rock") However, laser beams, booby traps and cages make this mission more difficult than the agents had predicted. They are assisted by a spy gadget, a power rope and a bottle of maple syrup. Secret agents Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone sneak into a museum to deliver a mysterious piece of a bone to its rightful owner. Genre: Western swing Songs: "I'm a Mountie" (tune: " She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain"), "Ski Patrol to the Rescue", "Snowball Duty", "Who Could It Be?" While Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers Tyrone and Pablo defend the snow fort that guards the world's largest snowball, ski patrol members Tasha and Uniqua mistake them for people who need help. Genre: Funk Songs: "Yeti Stomp", "Keep On Snow Going", "Row Your Boat" (tune: " Row, Row, Row Your Boat"), "There's No Such Thing as a Yeti" They are accompanied by Frozen North expert Tasha, who insists that the yeti (Pablo) does not exist, are only tales because the yetis likes raisins, are stinky and live in their igloos. Uniqua and Tyrone track Yeti Pablo through the Frozen North. Genre: Gilbert and Sullivan Songs: "I'm Tarzan", "Where in the World Do the Wormans Live? (Hey Sherman)", "Into the Thick of It", "It's Drizzling, It's Pouring" (tune: " I'm Called Little Buttercup") Tarzans Pablo, Tyrone, and Austin attempt to warn her about the jungle's perils, which she is mostly unaware of. Professor Uniqua explores the jungle to deliver Sherman the Worman to his residence. Genre: Reggae and ska Songs: "A Pirate Says Arrr", "Scurvy Pirate" (tune: " Drunken Sailor"), "Treasure", "Falling Off a Log" Unbeknownst to them, Pablo and Tyrone have the other half and are looking for the same treasure. Uniqua and Austin are pirates and seek a hidden treasure after discovering half of a treasure map. In this pilot, Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone dance in the backyard and come across a mud pit, which they imagine is quicksand. Ī computer-animated pilot created at Nick Digital. Note: This pilot was produced in September 1998. In this pilot, Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, and Tasha sing songs and explore the backyard while marking their discoveries with colorful flags. It was a spectacular view up there and all in one, it was a great round trip of half of a day. The same i can say about the cozy chairlift, that goes from Anacapri to Monte Salaro. I would not recommend that tour to anybody, but: i reccomend the tour to the other side of the island, where you see the beautiful cliffs and nature wich is totally worth time and money, id say: even a must seen on a trip to capri. Unfriendly, loud, rough, not even singing nice, horrible yelling around in a cave, that would be 100 times nicer without that „service“. Its just nice to see the light coming from down outside into the cave under water - thats it.įor what exactly did we pay 14 bugs per Person for entrance? This is a rip off, since there is not even a light installation or something that gives me a feeling of a value on the other side (management).its just costs for a bit nature. Its a really short thing, not a long channel you pass along and things to be discovered. At the end, even the cave on itself is pretty nice, but really nothing special - if you travel around a little bit and have seen other really impressive things. Especially cause the other „capitains“ also sang around in the same cave, misstonic, loud, rough, disturbing. So to be honest: this yelling around and singing one minute later in the cave was totally absurd, not fitting and in my eyes, disturbing enorousely. I said: but i pay allready 14 for the entrance, wich „service“ are you talking about? „Oh, this is for my towing and singing“ he said. First: he put all attention on the other three girls on the boat and was very careless about my girlfriend, sat almost on her hand and if she would not have cared, she’ d probably gotten a row stick in her face, second: we paid the 14 Euro entrance and the first thing the unfriendly rowing man made clear: this is exclusive service. This has - most of all- to do with the fact, that our guide was a rip off and very unsymphatic. But the visit at the blue cave was a waste of energy, money and time. Mentioned it as „one of the most gamous caves in the world“ (Marco Polo Guide), i had really expected to see something quiet impressive.

girlie tell us some of your headcanons I'm curious😌
okay okay so some of my CHB headcanons include~
the apollo cabin, 100%, hosts a karaoke night on fridays. whether it's in their cabin or in the arts in craft center. they have party decorations and disco balls on hand so they just deck the whole space out 😭
everyone can sing and they welcome all type of genres
they hype up anyone that has the mic so it's really fun
i love the idea of a demigod olympics at the beginning of the summer!!!
it'll be kind of like homecoming/spirit week in america where there are a bunch of competitions. so like three-legged races, relay races, tug of war, etc etc
one of the games is a boat race! so, the cabins have to make a boat out of just a cardboard box and duct tape.
the requirements for winning is that someone has to be in the box and successful row across the lake HAHA it's so chaotic and the athena and hephaestus cabin get so into it
another popular one is an intense dodgeball game 😭 and yes, they have to wear their armor for this because the ares cabin practically throws to kill LMFAO
for halloween, the hephaestus cabin does a huge walk-through haunted house or escape rooms! they scare the crap out of everyone with their automatronics
the aphrodite cabin is in charge of the special effects makeup and the apollo/hermes kids usually volunteer to be the actors in the whole thing
in speaking of actors, you CANNOT tell me that the apollo cabin and other kids who enjoy theater do not organize musicals
they have a big vote for what musicals or plays they want to do
mr d holds the auditions for roles LMFAO and chiron oversees because mr d can sometimes be so brutal
i have this planned for my fic but the children of sorcery gods and goddesses have quidditch games 😌
all it takes is one hecate kid (which is atticus in my fic) and one hephaestus kid (leo) to make all the things they need.
the matches get so intense and they take place in the arena 😭
every sunday morning, everyone goes to watch the game and the stolls take bets on which team will win LMFAO
i also like to headcanon that they do celebrate hellenistic pagan holidays and throughout the year there are feasts and carnivals where they carry out those traditions.
so there are weekends where campers who aren't all year round will come back to camp to enjoy all the festivities!
