After sitting in the courtyard of St. Martin's Church for a while I continued on until arriving where I would conclude my walk.
The National Palace was as deep into Sintra as I could go, as it is its very center. I did not enter, but instead took some time to look over the town, and the paths I had cut through the hills.
I was pleased to find a vertical rail here on this balcony, as it provided a perfect support for my phone as I set up a quick shot.
Tumblr media
To capture this shot I sat my bag on the stairs of the palace and situated my phone onto my bag at the desired angle. The palace just didn't captivate me as much as the color of the town did. It's a much more beautiful backdrop.
Tumblr media
I left the city center, making sure to cut through Parque da Liberdade on my way back to my residence, and after doing so I was back there in an hour with about the same amount of daylight left.

Tudo bem
BOM dia. OTIMO dia, in fact.
Hi from Portugal.
First, I feel obligated to catch you up, even though no one cares. Brave.
I had perfect days in San Sebastian. Walking 12 miles a day. Talking to happy farm animals. Discovering a perfect vegetarian restaurant where the owner(?) had painted nails and kissed the top of my head. Going back to the same restaurant twice. Walking some more. And more and more and more and more until my little toes went numb. I thought “This will be hard to top,” but I knew I was heading to my favorite place in the entire world next, Portugal.
My last night there, I didn’t sleep well. Then I got up early to head to the bus station so I could take the one-hour ride to Bilbao airport and fly to Lisbon. As the only American around, scooting off from dream city to dream city, in the most seamless, well-planned way, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Who the fuck planned this perfect trip?” And then I remembered. Oh yeah. Me!
One of the more incredible things about a solo adventure, I’ve found, is that you’re truly looking after yourself at every step. Past you loves current you and current you is grateful for past you. Current you is also excited to fulfill past you's dreams.
On the bus through Basque country, I thought about months-ago me. Sitting on her couch, researching how to get from San Sebastian to Portugal. Learning that Spain’s incredible train system doesn’t connect to Portugal’s. Renting a car in one country and driving it to the next over is incredible expensive. Etc. Now what about a bus… Hm… more research to be done…
And voila here I am. On the official best route from Paris to San Sebastian to Lisbon. Researched, plotted and interrogated. Thanks, past me.
I was finally heading back to the place I’ve longed to return to since 2018. My absolute favorite place in the world. I was last here with then-boyfriend. We encountered a British woman in Sintra who wondered if we wanted to buy her extra Portuguese bus pass because she’d never use it again. “Never? How do you know you’ll never use it again? You know you’ll never come back?” She looked at me like I was crazy.
The gag, my friends, is that she was crazy. Visiting a place is nice, but I like to think that the world isn’t a bucket list and you check an entire city or country off your Bingo card. If you have the privilege of imagining it, it takes the pressure off. To SEE everything. DO everything. I say, leave a little on your plate and be open to the idea of slowing down. And if you miss it, start scheming the return.
I mean, imagine going to New York once and seeing Times Square and Central Park and calling it seen. Going back to the same place multiple times, inching further away from the tourist spots, now that you have your footing, venturing deeper inward and outward at the same time. That’s the best.
Back to yesterday. Simple bus, flight, etc. But oh, the thrill I felt when I got on my TAP flight and the announcement was in Portuguese!!! In Lisbon, I bopped off my flight and flew through the airport. No customs, whee!! (Whee?)
I got a taxi and pulled up the address of my AirBnB on my phone for the driver. “Bom dia. Aqui por favor.” The driver typed it into his phone. “Cinquenta… e cinco…” And I thought “Those are the numbers! They really use them here!!!! It’s true! The numbers!" I settled myself into the backseat, so proud so happy. Then he spoke to me in Portuguese. Oh shit.
Here’s how the rest of our dialogue went in the cab:
Me: Oh no…. Uh… Aprendo Português, mas falo mal. (I learn Portuguese but I speak bad.”)
Martim (I later learned his name): You are Spanish?
Me: No, sou de Los Angeles.
Martim: I speak English.
Me: Oh.
Martin: I thought you were Portuguese.
Me: REALLY!? OH MY GOD ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER. I DON’T WANT TO LOOK AMERICAN!!!!
Martim: No, don’t worry. You look Portuguese.
[[intense obsession with this man and this fact and how perfect my life is, then chat about Portugal, travel, cars, etc. Not interesting to anyone]]
Martim: You’ll love the countryside here. The people are genuine. They’re good people. Colder weather, warmer people.
Me:  I met some really nice people in San Sebastian. I was in France before. And you know, people there aren’t known for being nice.
Martim: No, French people are not. They’re also very stupid.
[[MAIS DIÁLOGO]]
Martim: (re my AirBnB) You picked the hardest place to get to.
Me: LOL I know. You can just drop me off wherever and I’ll walk the rest of the way.
[[Dialogue about payment]]
Me: ADEUS, MARTIM!!!!! OBRIGADA!!!!!!
He dropped me off a grand total 3 steps from the apartment. I buzzed up and down came Rui, my AirBnB host who is very fit and super warm. The apartment is amazing. A fourth-floor walk-up, up very steep steps. Private balcony, view of a church and a quiet street. Heaven.
I was sweaty and gross, so I kept my distance from his nose while we sat and chatted. He told me that he is a kite surfing instructor. He lives in the apartment nine months out of the year but rents it out during the high seasons. We talked about tourism and the influx of non-Portuguese folks. I was ready for a rant about how people are destroying the culture. I would make the same argument, I imagined.
But he said that it’s great. The one thing is that you don’t hear Portuguese spoken in this neighborhood. But it’s great that it’s international. He’s sad that his friends have all sold their places and moved out of the city. The money was just too good. New people here are contributing to the culture.
Loved this. Thank you, Rui.
He was super nice and offered me really interesting recommendations that aren’t in guidebooks. Rent a bike and toot over to a little fishing village. (I love little fishing villages! That’s my thing!, I thought.) He pointed me toward beaches and towns in the way way north for my journey.
I told him about San Sebastian because it’s such a gorgeous city and a surfing destination and wondered if he’d been. He told me that he hasn’t traveled in Europe. “Civilized culture is for when I’m old.” As long as he can physically do it, he’ll kite surf and rock climb and hike and be in the ocean. I love it. He headed out. Tchau!
I took a shower, and set off on foot to return to a previous stop, LX Factory, to buy ceramics.
The vague path there was familiar, but the streets here are nuts with twists and turns and hills. Perfect. And people here, like me, dress like shit. It’s the best of all Europe. They love great art, they eat great food, they love nature and ceramics and cats. But the people dress horribly. "Me too!" (Romy & Michele)
And as I walked, I thought about my lonely year and a half in the pandemic and how every day I would huff and puff walking the hills in Los Feliz, listening to Portuguese language podcasts and repeating phrases out loud, in preparation for one day being here, dreaming of an eventual journey. Some day… some day…
And here I am, huffing and puffing up the hills of the Estrela neighborhood, headphones off, hearing and reading actual Portuguese. In the dream.
I worried coming back here that I would only associate it with my ex and feel lonely.
To which, I must tell you, LOL.
Never felt a thing about my past. Only thought about the moment and a future where I could live here. I have no job prospects in America. No real ties. Responsibilities. I am floating in the middle. Happily without a future or a past. I mean, I saw a yarn store and thought about how much my mom would love it.
And my incredible American friend who lives here came over for some wine on the balcony, and we went to dinner at a place that I strongly associate with my ex and imagined I’d avoid. But it was perfect. Mere minutes into our dining experience, any past memory was replaced with her accidentally kicking the table over and then me breaking a novelty can our check came in. This was all be humiliating enough, but it actually came right after we were mocking the German bachelorette party next to us. One scowling woman had a headband with penises at the end of springs on her head. ... Then table flip.
Tudo bem!

FASHION CREDITS: LADY GAGA BY NICK KNIGHT FOR DOM PÉRIGNON
Pour it up for Lady Gaga, who is teaming up with Champagne brand Dom Pérignon for a creative new collaboration.
The duo will be launching limited edition bottles and a sculpture designed by Gaga herself on April 6. The alliance is a "celebration of how pushing boundaries of creation, constant reinvention and passionate dedication to one's craft can elevate us, individually and collectively," according to a press release.
The campaign is shot and directed by her longtime collaborator Nick Knight. Styling by Nicola Formichetti and Marta Del Rio, makeup by Sarah Tanno-Stewart, hair by Frederic Aspiras and manicure by Miho Okawara.
Tumblr media
In one of the official campaign photos, Gaga is posing with a bottle of the luxury Champagne while exuding nothing but royalty and excellence. All hail Chromatica! She's rocking a bespoke dramatic metallic leather and silk faille gown with a matching headpiece by Serbian designer Miodrag Guberinic, whose website is a must-visit! Costume designers Swayed Stature, Michael Sui and James Christie helped bring this piece to life as well. Mio revealed that this space-tastic beauty was sketched back in 2015 and stayed in his drafts until recently.
Tumblr media
The next look is a bespoke design by young designer Wiederhoeft, whose work should be familiar to you.
Gagaloo rocked a custom pink lamé ruffled gown with voluminious sleeves and elongated, dramatic train!
Just like the design before, this piece was crafted with the help of a handful of young designers: Saint Sintra, Y. Hadari and Carla Maldonado.
Tumblr media
Black fishnet tights and the Pleaser Flamingo-1020 black vinyl platform lace-up ankle boots completed the look.
Tumblr media
In a few quick scenes we can spot Gaga rocking a hot pink metallic number.
This constructed bodysuit with cut-out detail, corset back, and silver-tone hardware is a custom creation by young designer Lacey Dalimonte!
On top, she threw on a matching half heart chrome leather bolero jacket, custom-made for her by Candice Cuoco.
Tumblr media
Last but definitely not least, the Italian-American beauty is seen dripping in jewels while embracing the oversized bottle of champagne.
Her insane holographic metal butterfly and chain facepiece with Swarovski crystals, she styled as a headpiece, is signed by Gregory Kara - another new name in her ever-growing closet!
The pink & silver crystal choker with matching bracelet and cocktail ring are part of a set that drag jewelry designer Elea’s Closet custom-made for our girl.
Tumblr media
Here’s a closer look at the insane gradient nails Japanese nail artist Miho Okawara exclusively created for this shoot!
Tumblr media
In the BTS videos we can spot some of her dancers rocking two different crystallized face harnesses by emerging designer Gilles Asquin, whose Instagram page definitely needs a visit by you.
Tumblr media
Other pieces worn by the dancers, also referred as “The Court”, are the Marina Hoermanseder Fall/Winter 2020 pink ruffled Swiss dot organza puff sleeve blouse, custom Lory Sun statue-inspired body piece in pink, and Gregory Kara full face armour piece hand-embellished with Swarovski crystals, pearls and grey hematite beads!
Others rocked the pink tinsel look including jacket, pants and bunny mask, several pink exploding tulle dresses and draped sleeve, ruffled jumpsuit, all from Alessandro Trincone’s “Areinmi” collection.
Tumblr media
In another BTS photo, Gaga is seen wearing a look by Vex Clothing that unfortunately didn’t make the cut.
It’s a custom pink latex basque and high-waisted shorts with scallop trim, bow-embellished garters and crystals, based on their Moderne basque.

After making my way down to a road that looped around a restaurant I snapped a picture of an old car, walked around the loop, and headed back the way I came, keeping an intersection in mind that I'd need to return to. Once I made it back to the intersection, I continued past it, seeing the way back to my residence on my left, and ahead of me, more sights to see.
I went that way for twenty or thirty minutes, minding my gait as I continued down. Gravity wanted to quicken my pace but I took deep breathes and deliberate steps. Bends in the road and narrow or nonexistent sidewalks required focus and surefootedness, which I had in spades.
Eventually I would come to a stretch where the road widened and through the sidewalk large trees rose on either side, looming over me and shading my path as I neared what turned out to be Parque da Liberdade.
Tumblr media
This enormous, multilevel park sloped off to my right, beyond a stone border that separated the road from the stepped park. I passed the view of its interior on my right and approached the entrance, where an old municipal building stood. I looked around the courtyard where the entrance was, and turned my gaze back the way I came and up, peering from under the arch of the buildings columns and toward a high hill.
Tumblr media
I would return to the park later but first I would make my way deeper into the town proper, having proudly navigated my way to areas of interest without a guide or aide of locals. As I paused I could feel the journey up till now pulsing in my soles, yet I soldiered on, content to extend the time it would take to return as I had plenty of daylight left and complete clarity on how to get back. Beyond the park were roads full of fellow tourists, mostly on foot like myself. Amidst the chatter and bustle and sound of car engines I heard during my stroll through the streets, I thought I detected music being played from a car or a shop. But as I neared Sintra's Myths and Legends center, I realized it was the sound of a church organ coming from St. Martin's next door. I took this video, carefully avoiding capturing two tourists who walked up on my right.
To be continued...
