#dutchdoubleclutch heard the call, ‘get thee to a nunnery’ as the #MGTD ’s rack ‘n pinion jerked the wheel from his hands pulling into the parking lot of @sister_rays The image of a nun in a beard and shades – what’s not to like? And today they have @burning.beard.brewing ’s ‘get thee to a nunnery’ on tap plus vegetarian options on the menu (I had the MF Shroom with a veggie patty). With just 15 miles on the clock since the full restoration and the need for 200 before turning her over to her next caretaker, we’ll have to make a lot more lunch runs here * #sisterrays #drf61503 #mg #MOWOG #carforsale #vintagesportscar #sportscar #britishsportscar #britishcar #britishcars #britishclassic #classiccar #britishclassiccar #vintagecars #1952mg #vintagestyle #vintagedriver #collectorcar #carforsale #oldcar #oldtimer #carculture #restorationshop #carrestoration #cardealership #classiccardealer #classiccardealership #classiccarsdaily (at Sister Ray’s) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByLpPlYlDZM/?igshid=l0k2vhg5iax2

Page from my personal journal: a review of Soho record store Sister Ray, from my trip to London, August 1995.
Back in November, I shared my review of the Covent Garden Rough Trade shop (RIP), as written in my UK trip journal the summer of 1995. This is my review of Sister Ray on Berwick Street:
Sister Ray (Berwick) The place to go for the best prices (and good selection of) new UK vinyl by the not-too-obscure. When I was here last year I picked up the Sebadoh LP w/7″, Stereolab LP w/7″, Pram LP, etc. Where other stores charged £8-9 for the Long Fin Killie LP, Sister Ray charges £7.50. Small difference, but it adds up if this is your bag. Unspectacular but solid bunch of new and used 7″es, mostly Brit (little U.S. stuff). New + used mixed together (LPs, CDs). Fair selection, but useful for price shoppers.
I believe the Sebadoh album I was referencing was Bakesale, and the Stereolab one was Mars Audiac Quintet. And while getting limited editions with free singles a real treat, I was honestly excited to just get these on vinyl at all, since at that time U.S. labels were only issuing these releases on cassette and CD.
Not only do I still have those records in my collection, Sister Ray is (I believe) still in business. I visited the shop on my last trip to London in May 2019 and yes, bough another limited LP: the 2019 pressing of Sorry For Laughing by Josef K, edition of 500 with bonus CD of TV Art (pre-Josef K) demos.

YCN HMV: Research
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As part of my research I went to some record shops in the Soho area, including HMV-owned FOPP. What I found is that most stores had the same types of decor. There was generally an industrial feel yet an overall quiet and plain setting. None of the shops stood out in terms of uniqueness. Possibly the most one of a kind was Phonica because they had colourful lantern lighting and their merchandise arranged in a way that created a funky display. It made the overall shop look more inviting and made you want to stay in there longer than comparative shops, owing to the atmosphere made by the setting. This compared to Sisterray which was fairly plain and had little attention to the decor and factors which would draw the customer in. One factor in common that really stood out to me in Phonica and Sisterray was that they had listening decks, so that customers could try before they bought records. This is clearly a good idea in terms of customer experience and satisfaction, meaning people would avoid disappointment and frustration when buying a record.
What also seemed to work well in Sisterray was the fact that they had display records that were mostly testers, but not the actual records. Customers would take the tester records to the desk that they wanted to buy and a member of staff would get them a new, freshly packaged record from storage. This was an effective way of saving space, while also being an effective means of theft prevention. When looking around FOPP, what seemed to overwhelm me was the sheer number of products available on display. Research shows that too much choice proves unsettling for consumers. As you walk into the shop, you almost do not know where to start; even though it is a big space, it is crammed with every type of merchandise HMV has to offer. This proves destabilising to a customer’s intentions and can be contrasted sharply with the clean, spacious feel that is given to the consumer when entering Sisterray or Phonica. In addition, there was no sign of listening decks or any alternative means by which customers could try before purchase. The lack of tailored experience for the customer was felt here. It felt almost like a clearance sale, as lots of merchandise seemed to be reduced, giving the indication that this was not a state of the art, high quality setting but a shop struggling to survive. What did seem to work well in FOPP, as well as in Phonica, was the industrial interior design. I thought that the metal venting with harsh white backlights used as signage had a cool look to it, but that was the only redeeming factor of the overall design of the store interior.
Overall, visiting these shops proved illuminating as to the importance of space, light and personalisation of the customer experience.

To accompany my primary research, I also looked into the historical context of HMV, where I stumbled across some images of the Oxford Street store in the 1950s and 1960s. Record sales and record production at this time was at its peak. What really stood out to me from these images was some similarities with Phonica and Sisterray; this was the fact that they also had listening decks in the store, so customers can try before they buy. In addition, they had a section of the store that sold record players, appealing to a wider cross-section of consumers. This seems like a positive aspect for customers as it complements the sale of the records and broadens and deepens the relationship between the buyer and the seller. What really stood out to me was the fact that they had a personal recordings section of the store where customers could personalise and create records that resonated with them. People could record their own voice or music and put this on an HMV record, giving them a close and familiar tie with the store that could ensure repeat custom and brand loyalty. This personal recording also seems like an innovation within the record shop industry as I haven’t heard or come across another store offering a similar service.
My historical research has really helped me to gauge a context as to what HMV used to be and its position in the retail world before the introduction of the internet and what made it stand out compared to other record stores at the time of peak record production and consumption.
