I wanna mention by the way, while I'm on a 'Lena posts about how fucking much she loves hiking' kick, that I am *not* an athletic person.
I am pudgy.
I get winded easily.
My knees make weird noises.
The worst grade on my entire high school transcript back in ye olden days was in fucking Gym.
You do NOT need to be one of those ultrafit girlies in gym spandex on instagram or tiktok or whatever to go hiking.
You can be a 30-something red-faced huffing and puffing desk jockey with shitty knees. And still say fuck it, I'm gonna go touch grass.
Because nature is good for the soul and hiking can bring a sense of accomplishment, however often you need to stop for breaks and air and water, whatever your limitations are that you're facing and meeting. Hell, even if you just begin with walking through the local park -- that's awesome!!!
Don't think you need some ultra high level of fitness to get started if hiking is something that appeals to you -- just do your research on trail difficulty and hiking safety, then start where you feel comfortable at your present level of ability, with kindness and understanding for yourself. You'll find your 'comfortable' zone starts growing.
You know what? Unpopular opinion, but. The first circle of Hell is reserved for people who make hikes marathons. The hell do you want to go so quick for. It's a mountain, it's not gonna move. Stop and look at the leaves
Since I was a little girl I always wanted to visit El Yunque. El Yunque is a tropical forest located in Puerto Rico. You can find many species like the Puerto Rican parrot, el coqu铆, and even pieces of our history. I never had the chance to visit El Yunque and I don't live anymore in my Isla del encanto, but one day I am coming back to discover all the things I wasn't able before.
But El Yunque was the inspiration for this goal of being in a forest. And I did what I do with all my goals, accomplish them. I took this photo in the Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia. Near the Monongahela National Forest. A perfect spot for those who like remote places. My emotions took over me, realizing it was the first time I was in a forest. While I was driving, I could see baby deers what reminded me of the bambi movie.
After five hours of driving, I wasn't tired enough to start hiking this amazing place. It was also, my first experience camping and my first waterfall photo in slow speed. This photo represents many first things done in that day.
Me, lying in bed, my heels covered in bandaids and glacier gel for my blisters, sunburned and windburned, barely able to move my legs: "Fuck, I love hiking."
