I know some people tend to interpret Philip as having been observably "off" to the townsfolk of Gravesfield even as a child, but I honestly like the idea of him being the sort of quiet, pious kid everyone was certain would grow up to be an upstanding community member and who at worst was maybe a little too good at getting his way and had a bit of a mean streak, in part because I think it better complements what TOH has to say about conformity, oppression, and the establishment and in part because I think it's really, really funny if it turns out he went down the "'So-and-so was a pleasure to have in class' to unhinged dropout by their early 20s" pipeline of Puritan Christianity.
