I like how the season 4 premiere really focused on how the people in harry’s life made an impact on him. it would be easy and almost expected to streamline his emotions by making them tailored exclusively to asta but they don’t do that here. he has drawings made of everyone and hangs them up in his jail cell. he scrutinizes each portrait not only for its accuracy but also for what it either reveals or fails to reveals about the person. he notices if someone isn’t sad enough in the drawing or picks up on facial expressions and emotional cues he might’ve missed before. harry has been storing all of this dormant emotional data like a plant that needs water. that plant only receives water when in virtual isolation. like a neglected garden suddenly blooming after a long rain. that really shows the maturation of his human-ness when his ability to love people grows outside of asta. he’s really been absorbing all of these friendships. not just feeling for them but seeing them, really seeing them for the first time

You have got to learn about the mundane wildlife in your area. The world becomes so much bigger and more exciting when you do. Start looking at the birds that show up in the backyard. Look up "backyard bird *my area*" and find out what they're called. If you live in the city, start looking at the pigeons and seeing how many different color morphs you can pick out. Look at the tops of buildings and see what kind of raptors are looking for a mouse to scuttle by at the right time. Look a little closer at the corner spider in your bathroom and try to identify it. Find out what type of trees you pass on your daily walk. Look at the patch of flowers you normally ignore. What kind of flowers are they? What's pollinating them? Are there squirrels in your region? How many different colors can you find them in? It almost becomes a game. You'll start looking for these things when you go out. You'll get excited when you see the rare black squirrel with the orange tail. You'll spy a bright yellow bird and go oh that's my friend goldfinch! One day you'll look at a patch of dandelions and want to squeal when you see an iridescent blue bee. You'll get to smugly correct your friends when they point out a "red headed woodpecker" and you get to say no, actually that's a red breasted woodpecker, you know because it's got the faintest blush of red on its breast and here let me show you an actual red headed woodpecker and- yeah yeah that's why that one gets to be the red head. No I don't know why they went with red breasted and not red capped, I didn't name the damn thing.

The world just gets a little more exciting when you learn about the little plants and animals that live right beside you. You'll see ants crawl in and out of flowers and think wow that must be so cozy. You'll watch the winter birds migrate in and kick snow out of the way to get to fallen seeds and watch the year round birds learn and repeat the behavior. You have to learn about and appreciate the little things, I promise, it's so worth it.

while writing at the center, their brotp shenanigans became some of my favorites. 😭 i also had a lot of fun exploring potential nuances of elsa's would-be friendships with each of the guardians in cosset, which is where i became obsessed with the idea of which nicknames they would (or would not call) elsa, and what each nickname demonstrated about their friendship (e.g., bunny's use of "ice-pop").

there's a whole thing about what each of the guardians call her, but here's the bit from cosset about the bunny/elsa!brotp and how "ice-pop" came into being (and is now a permanent fixture in my head and transcends multiple stories, lmao):

Bunny calls her the Snow Lass at first. It is uncomfortable for him, being around a human (and then a newborn Guardian) who has always struggled so deeply with Hope. Then one night, sometime around her eleventh year, the two of them go out to a distant corner of the French Polynesian islands and come back seven hours later with smiles and novelty character-ice cream pops from Bunny’s favorite New York City bodega. Occasionally, he’ll call her Ice-Pop and chuckles whenever she makes a face. He tucks strands of wayward hair behind her ear, or back into her braid, and calls her Elsie, and then shouts and laughs hard when she mercilessly pelts him with ice.
