OKAYYYY just watched The Santa Clause 2 for the first time and these are my thoughts: 🎅 i think this is the best movie of the main trilogy in terms of storytelling!! it's got all the cynicism and adult humour of the first one and all the sweet Christmas goofiness of the third, and balances it perfectly 💖 🎅 i'm starting to see what all you Bernard fans enjoy so much about him 😉 🎅 nothing could have prepared me for the nightmarish horror that is Toy!Santa's face. that thing is some Return to Oz levels of uncanny and it worked beautifully 💀 🎅 Carol is an absolute gem of a person and i wish she got to express more of her personality in the third movie!! she really is a perfect match for Scott and i love how they make each other smile 🥰 🎅 the costume design and set design was stellar as always!!! seriously so many excellent details in every scene, especially with the toys!! 🎅 so surprised by how well the kid actors did, especially Liliana Mumy 🔥

what actually matters more? what if it’s not love alone, but the things that survive around it. gentleness, consistency, shared silence, a hand that doesn’t flinch when it reaches for yours despite the past it has seen and felt. love should be intention and action, both. like you're tending to a flame rather than burning it yourself over and over and over.
is love overhyped? maybe. (definitely) plato wrote in the symposium that love is a kind of divine madness, a search for the other half we lost. but i think that hunger, that incompleteness, can make us believe anything that fills the hollow must be love. we worship intensity and call it romance. we crave being needed and call it connection. and that often leads to people consuming each other roughly and claiming it's filling the void that must be born from a lack of romantic love. never once do they consider that the madness they're experiencing, the void they’re trying to fill isn’t shaped like a lover. maybe it’s shaped like self understanding, or quiet, or simply the kind of peace that doesn’t need another body to validate its warmth.

i read about how kierkegaard saw love as a kind of moral choice: not a whim, but a commitment to care even when it no longer feels thrilling. think of old couples perhaps.
i read how simone de beauvoir argued that authentic love must involve two freedoms meeting, not consuming each other.
and i think love, when it’s real, is just that, not possession, but recognition. not escape, rather returning after all is said and done with the world and its ways.
but my favourite was miyazaki showing through his movies how love is simply two people inspiring each other to live. to live to their fullest, to trust in one another to the point where you push each other, and know the other's capabilities, even when they doubt their own.

but it can be what teaches you how to stay.
