Update day two (or one if you don’t count adoption/buying day). 😋

Spot is doing good and throughout the day has started hiding less plus he/she is not hiding or flinching from the guppies much anymore. Poor Spot was trying to hide from them but the 5 guppies are curious and of all the places to be in the aquarium have all gone to Spot’s corner 🤣 they are circled in blue and Spot is in the purple circle. The red circle is the patch of live aquarium plants I have successfully grown, 9/10 they die on me but I’ve started to learn through trial and error which plants I can grow. I’m trying to get the tank at least half live plants. I’m going to be adding another hide for Spot but the drift wood he’s been hanging around has a hollow canyon indent down the bottom and a partial on at the bottom end on the side facing up. Plus the two fake corral reef decorations are archways. I never really had hides in with the 40 gallon because my guppies never used them and I felt like it took up space if they didn’t even swim through it just around it so I eventually took them out to make gravel vacuuming easier.

I also have some soft wood like Spider-wood and Cholla-wood on order because I didn’t think about Mopani being too hard for the little guy to eat; until last night when I was doing research to see if there’s another type of wood plecos will eat to give Spot options and found out hardwood driftwood is too hard for most plecos. I just went with what I got for my 11 year old common pleco Snowflake because he has liked Mopani the best (and it’s easiest to find local, usually the only drift wood I can find local) but that’s probably because he’s an 18 inch beast big enough to scrape at it but I’ll put some spider wood in with Snowflake anyway just as a second option when the two wood’s 🪵 are delivered.

Plecos no matter the species seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to hiding. If I can’t see you and my face is covered I must be hidden!! 😂

(Sorry for the long ramble I’m excited about my newest buddy also snowflake had to be moved out to the 600 gallon goldfish pond within his first year at my house. Double check before you get a pleco most don’t clean up aquarium algae after they grow out of adolescence. Snowflake quit scraping algae 7 months in and I just ended up getting a black pond cover and putting waterproof led lights underneath. The pond cover also protects from birds, raccoons, and neighborhood cats.)

Welcome to the 200-day update on my 6.6-gallon (25-liter) Walstad cherry shrimp tank! This setup has been a fascinating journey, showcasing how a low-tech, self-sustaining system can thrive without relying on a traditional filter, heater, or CO2 injection. The core of this tank’s success lies in its substrate—a layer of nutrient-rich topsoil capped with fine gravel. The soil provides vital micronutrients for plants and hosts colonies of waste-eating bacteria, which naturally boost CO2 levels in the water. The gravel not only locks these nutrients in place but also prevents the substrate from clouding the water, creating a stable and balanced environment.

The plants in this tank play a vital role in maintaining water quality. Rotala rotundifolia, with its vibrant colors, acts as a natural filter by absorbing nitrogen compounds and heavy metals while providing grazing surfaces for shrimp. Christmas moss is another key player, offering shrimp an abundance of grazing areas and hiding spots for baby shrimp. On the sides, Eleocharis has struggled to establish itself, but Bacopa caroliniana, planted as an experiment, has done surprisingly well, thriving in the nutrient-rich substrate. Floating plants like water lettuce and duckweed are newer additions. While duckweed has spread more than I’d like, both provide shade, surface area for biofilm, and additional grazing spots for shrimp.

There have been some significant changes to the tank since the last update. The two adult Medaka rice fish, which once lived here, were moved to a dedicated Medaka tank after their fry were large enough to avoid predation. Interestingly, their presence increased the tank’s bioload, which had a noticeable positive impact on plant growth. Bacopa caroliniana recovered from earlier struggles, and Rotala rotundifolia developed more vibrant coloration, likely due to the extra nutrients. To maintain this balance, I added two guppies, which have settled in nicely. Their contribution to the tank’s bioload has helped keep the plants thriving and the ecosystem stable.

The cherry shrimp colony is thriving more than ever. I estimate the population at around 100 shrimp, constantly grazing, breeding, and contributing to the tank’s cycle. Over the past week, I’ve shared 50 shrimp with friends and relocated some to my Medaka and celestial pearl danio tanks to help control algae. Despite this, the tank still feels teeming with life. The plants have been instrumental in supporting the shrimp population by increasing the available surface area for biofilm and algae. To sustain their growth, I supplement their diet with algae wafers, shrimp snowflake food, Fluval Bug Bites, and leaves. However, I recently added a nano hang-on-back filter to reduce particulate matter from foods like snowflake food.

The tank’s water parameters have remained stable, thanks to the plants. While an initial ammonia spike occurred when I added the Medaka due to overfeeding, floating plants like water lettuce and duckweed helped mitigate the issue by absorbing excess ammonia and nitrite. Although my soft tap water can pose challenges for shrimp molting, I’ve stopped adding shrimp salts during water changes for the past month and haven’t noticed any issues. This balance is a testament to the effectiveness of the tank’s self-sustaining ecosystem.

Rei turned his flight-belt off as slipped through Ataru's window and landed on the ground. He brushed the snowflakes out of his hair, and looked around for Lum, but the room was empty despite the lights being left on.

He sighed and turned to go before pausing as he heard the door creek open. Ten waddled through the air into the room looking almost as sullen and dejected as Rei was feeling.

He perked up when he saw Rei. 

"Oh! What are you doing here?" Rei was thankful that since they were alone, Ten didn't bother with Japanese.

Rei answered in Oni, too. "I was looking for Lum. She's not here?"

Ten shook his head, his bangs flopping over his face. "No, she dragged Ataru to go ice skating for Christmas. They left me all by myself."

Rei bit his lip. "We could go after them. What's 'Christmas'?"

Ten perked up further, and flew slow little guppy circles around Rei. "That's right, you don't know what Christmas is! It's an Earth holiday! Hey, forget Lum and stupid Ataru, do Christmas with me, do Christmas with me! There's food!"

The mention of food did get Rei's attention, but so did Ten's eagerness as the little boy tugged at Rei's shirt, begging with wide eyes. Lum was already out with Ataru, and going after them always turned into a disaster anyway.

And Ten seemed really lonely.

And there was food.

An hour later, Rei was walking down the decorated and brightly lit main street of Tomobiki with Ten in his arms. Both of them were dressed up in some of Ataru's winter clothes– scarves, earmuffs, hat– Mrs. Moroboshi had insisted. A gentle snow was still falling, reflecting the colors of the twinkling lights that were hung.

Ten eagerly told him everything he knew about Christmas– things he seemed to have learned as much from TV and commercials as from the Moroboshi family– and as he rambled they made various stops along the way. They walked around a department store where a man dressed as Santa was yelling 'hohohos'. 

Later they bought a bucket of fried chicken from a restaurant with another man in a white beard. Rei had thought that he, too, was dressed as Santa, but Rei had explained that he was some kind of retired earth military commander who now sold Christmas chicken. After that they stopped in a little cafe that was packed full of couples, and Rei devoured most of a large white cake covered in strawberries. Ten explained about the cake, too, while picking away at his slice, but admittedly, Rei missed most of that explanation in his sheer joy for cake.

"Is there anything else to do on Christmas?" Rei asked as he stepped out into the snow, belly full of white frosting and strawberries.

"There's presents," Ten said, looking up at him with his big, sparkling eyes.

There were fireworks lighting up the sky when Rei brought Ten home, and the two of them sat on the roof for a few minutes watching them shimmer and crackle. 

Afterward, Rei tucked Ten into bed with a plush tiger that was almost the size that he was. The kid was asleep almost the instant his head hit the pillow.

When Lum came home, whenever that would be, she'd find hidden in the closet with her futon a plushie that matched Ten's– a large, fluffy cow with big eyes and an orange tiger striped ribbon.

Rei decided that Christmas wasn't the worst Earth tradition he'd learned about.
