Snow Leagues
Dates: November 26 - December 8, 1973
Synopsis: Charlie Brown is flabbergasted by the new phenomenon of regulated snowman building as a sport, or “Snow Leagues.”
Tumblr media
“Snow Leagues” begins with Charlie Brown building a snowman. Linus tells him that “from now on, all snowmen have to be made under adult supervision” and hands him… a printed press release, I guess?
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown reads it, and he knows the world’s gone crazy. He exclaims: “PLAYOFFS?!”
Tumblr media
As it turns out, the other kids are just letting this scam roll over them: Sally’s on a team called the “Silver Flakes.” It sounds brutal, but it’s the only way to be allowed to build a snowman under the adults’ wicked regime.
Tumblr media
Lucy’s super into it, because she’s a sucker for bells and whistles like recognition and an internal newsletter. She’s going to love having a corporate job. When told that they “have a newsletter,” CB gets in this sick dig:
Tumblr media
Even wise, circumspect Linus is all-in on the adult-controlled version of snowman building.
Tumblr media
Gamification: 1, Linus: 0.
(Also, this thing is already global:)
Tumblr media
Sally comes home angry because of a bad referee call: improper mittens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(By the way, Charlie Brown was looking straight to camera to react to another character’s nonsense decades before most of your faves.)
As if that isn't enough, Linus then tells Charlie Brown that he can’t come over to watch TV tonight because his parents are leaving for a “Snow Leaguers” party. This prompts another great Charlie Brown line:
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown said, “LIFE IS TOO SHORT FOR THIS SHIT” in a beautiful, topical, prescient metaphor, which I’m reading as being muttered under his breath juuuust loud enough for Linus to hear? King.
After a standard Sunday break, the "Snow Leagues" storyline returned on December 3:
Tumblr media
Sally has to file for $10,000 insurance coverage in case a snowman falls on her. Later, she chews out a referee for another bad call:
Tumblr media
(Is it the same referee as before? Who knows!)
Anyway, Charlie Brown is losing sleep over all this insanity.
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown taking the weight of the world onto his shoulders when no one asked him to is an essential and sometimes overlooked aspect of the character. He can be passive about some things, and he can be self-centered, but he really means well and gets worked up over the state of the world and how it affects the people he loves.
Tumblr media
He's a future doomscroller for sure.
As we enter the final three strips of the “Snow Leagues” storyline, Charlie Brown is still lying awake when he decides to engage in an act of protest: "sneak[ing] out into [his] backyard to build a snowman without adult supervision."
Tumblr media
He asks Snoopy to help him out, but he’s obviously too lazy.
Tumblr media
I love Charlie Brown's smile here — not only is he excited about being rebellious, he’s letting his best friend (the most rebellious dude he knows) in on the fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charlie Brown is acting in the spirit of protest, which is fierce! Children have rights, and having fun without being exploited, including by their parents, is one of them!
But it's not just about that for Good Old Charlie Brown. In the final strip of the series, we find him feeling a bit smug the next morning:
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown didn't just want to fight for his friends' right to have fun; he also wanted to prove himself to them. Very Charlie Brown of him.
Anyway, the other kids are over it now, anyway:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little bowling humor to round out the story.
The way the “Snow Leagues” storyline ends is quintessential Peanuts to me. Where A Charlie Brown Christmas ends on a hopeful note, with the other kids seeing things Charlie Brown’s way and surprising him by sprucing up his tree, this one ends with the other kids completely unmoved by Charlie Brown’s perspective or his subversive actions. Charlie Brown’s value system has lost a culture war, and that’s actually kind of devastating, but we have to laugh at it to survive.
“Snow Leagues” is one of my favorite Peanuts storylines. It’s satirical, on a level that’s accessible to younger readers and poignant to older readers, and funny to both. It could have been milked to run much longer; I can easily imagine Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Franklin, and Schroeder getting in on the fun. But it’s short and sweet, it’s super memorable (like, it’s literally the first Peanuts storyline I thought to cover) and it has a clear point of view.
One of the many, many properties that’s often pointed to as an example of Peanuts influence is, believe it or not, South Park, and I see it in this storyline, where a contemporary reality of childhood is satirized for comedic effect. Of course, South Park would certainly play the adult perspective on this situation for laughs, and while Peanuts has occasionally let adults be seen and/or heard, the audience never, ever experiences an adult character’s perspective. Unless you count Charles Schulz’ perspective permeating every aspect of the strip...

Here is a fluffy, snowy oneshot for the winter season.
I hope you enjoy!
Snow Day (Lyon x Lucy)
Lyon walked through the snowy streets of Magnolia, a smile growing on his face as he made his way to Fairy Tail's guildhall. It was a nice, cold, snow-filled, winter day and he wanted to spend it with his girlfriend.
Upon arriving at the guild, he pushed the large, wooden doors open to find that the mages inside were in the midst of one of their infamous brawls. This was to be expected, of course. He looked toward the bar, expecting Lucy to be sitting there, however, she wasn't. So, he decided to walk over to the bar and asked Mira, "where is Lucy?"
Mira smiled at him before responding, "here to see your girlfriend, are you? I'm still waiting for some babies from the two of you."
"Well, keep waiting. Where is Lucy?"
The white-haired woman chuckled and answered, "she's still at her apartment."
Lyon thanked her and turned around, walking back to the doors to leave. He heard Gray call out to him, but ignored him as he exited the guildhall. He continued to walk through the ice and snow-covered streets until he came to Lucy's apartment. He knocked and waited for his girlfriend to answer.
When he heard her muffled voice respond with "come in," he opened the door and stepped inside, finding that Lucy was bundled up on her bed. He raised an eyebrow as he observed her before laughing as he walked toward her. He sat on the bed and looked at her, seeing that she was wrapped tightly in her comforter as she sipped on a cup of hot chocolate, an open book next to her.
Lyon asked, giving her an amused smile, "are you comfortable?"
Lucy nodded, adding, "and warm."
The ice-make mage stood up and unwrapped his girlfriend, telling her, "well, too bad, because you and I are going to build snowmen."
Lucy whined as she pushed him away with one hand, "no! I want to stay where it's warm!"
Lyon laughed, managing to pull Lucy off of the bed. He took the cup of hot chocolate out of her hands and sat it on a nearby table. He pecked a kiss onto her pouting lips and asked, "can we please go build a snowman?"
He watched with a sense of victory as Lucy sighed and made her way to her closet, pull out some winter clothes, and walk into her bathroom, closing the door a bit loudly. The pale blue-haired man chuckled and sat on his girlfriend's bed to wait for her.
When Lucy reemerged, she had a frown on her face. She was dressed in a pair of jeans, a shirt, a dark blue jacket with brown furred trim along the hood, black gloves, and black snow boots with white furred trim around the opening of their openings.
Lyon, excited to have a day of snowy fun with his girlfriend, jumped up and grabbed her hand, dragging her toward the door. They exited the apartment and made their way to a nearby open space. Once there, Lyon turned to his girlfriend and instructed, "make the bottom part while I make the other two parts."
Lucy smiled at him as she asked, "how exactly do I do that?"
"Have you seriously never built a snowman?"
"Of course not!"
Lyon chuckled before he explained, "make a snowball and roll it around while patting it with your hands. It needs to be big and round."
Once Lucy had nodded and walked away, Lyon also set about rolling two snowballs. He occasionally looked over at Lucy, seeing that she was rolling the bottom snowball, a noticeable smile on her face. He smiled at the sight, knowing that even though she wasn't fond of the cold, she was still enjoying their activity together.
Lyon had finished the second snowball and was just about to work on the top one when Lucy called to him, "I'm done, Lyon!"
The ice-make mage looked over and his mouth dropped open at the sight of her creation. The bottom snowball was huge, much more than he expected. Lucy was standing beside it, looking proud of herself. He walked toward her, still staring down at the large snowball. It reached his knees. He looked at his girlfriend and questioned, "how did you make this so fast?"
Lucy laughed at his surprise and answered, "I don't know. I guess I have a talent."
"Clearly."
"Anything else we need for the snowman?"
"A bunch of rocks, a carrot, and a hat."
Lucy nodded and dashed off to collect the requested items. Lyon then looked back at the snowball in front of him. He gave a sigh, deciding to use the snowball he had just made as the top part of the snowman. He then started working on the middle part.
He had finished the middle snowball when Lucy returned with a carrot, rocks, and a black tophat. Lyon smiled at her saying, "grab the top part" and pointed at the smallest, but still quite large, snowball. The two mages picked up their respective snowballs and walked over to the bottom one, stacking the three parts of their snowman on top of each other.
Once completing that, Lyon pressed the black, round rocks into the snowman's face and Lucy stuck the carrot into it to make a nose and place the tophat on top of the snowman's head. The couple took a look at their snowy creation.
Before Lyon could say anything, Lucy rushed away from him. He turned around and watched curiously as his girlfriend shifted through some of the snow, picked up some things, and returned rushed back to him. The blonde quickly stuck a stick into each side of the snowman's torso before she stepped back to observe their finished project.
Lyon chuckled and wrapped his arm around his girlfriend, pulling her against his side. After several moments of silence, he asked, "how about we make some hot chocolate and cuddle?"
He watched with an amused smirk as Lucy whooped before she grabbed his arm and dragged him toward her apartment.

Okay but can we talk about Katniss and snow having brilliantly opposing symbolisms?!?
Throughout the series, Katniss and her rebellion are not so subtly symbolised by fire. The begins as the girl on fire, riding into the capitol on a literal chariot of flames and proceeds to have many fire themed struggles. The second book is called catching fire, in the third she says "if we burn you burn with us"
I don't have to prove this to you, Kantiss is fire
And equally I don't have to prove that snow is snow. Cos crazily enough, Snow is snow. It's pure, it's blinding, it's cold and calm and can appear wonderful, but is truly ruthless and cruel.
And what do we know about snow and fire?
Well, fire melts snow, but in doing so, fire is destroyed. The act of melting the snow puts out and weakens the fire, slowly shrivelling it until nothing is left.
That is, of course, unless it is fed and kindled and protected.
The act of toppling snows empire nearly destroys Katniss, many times over, but it is through Peeta's kindness that she is reborn. Rebuilt. Reignighted.
And the best part about these opposing symbolic representations, is that snow has every capacity to destroy fire. If snow can smother fire, suppress and suffocate its flickering form, there is nothing fire can do but wilt. The snow will barely even feel it.
The only hope fire has, is to grow to such a blaze and so fast, that there is no hope of snow to hold it back.
And so she does
And it is glorious

This chapter is based on the latter half of "General Jinjur’s Army of Revolt," but since I already used that chapter title, I named it something else. The illustration has absolutely nothing to do with the story. I thought it'd be fun to draw is all.
Ozma does make a couple of friends, however, as the illustration suggests.

"What the fuck is a snowman?"
Joel blinks, fingers still curled around the cup he just set down. It's early November and the universe has decided to fuck her over by sending Jackson one snow-heavy cloud after the other, topped off with an early overnight snow storm that left them with several inches of snow. The last few days have been rough for both of them, her nightmares crawling out from their hiding places like bloodhounds finding a promising trail, and Ellie has abandoned her bed for his with the first dusting of snow; her sheets are starting to collect dust.
She presses her hot cocoa closer to her chest to feel the warmth seep through her sweatshirt and the two layers of clothing beneath them, not that she needs them while inside, but it gives her a sense of protection, an armor to wear. Her plan for today is, well, was apparently, to curl up with Joel on the couch and either try to catch up on the sleep she is missing with the daylight ready to keep her vampiric memories away, or watch one movie after the other until she passes out from sheer exhaustion. Joel, however, is oddly motivated to get her distracted outside of the house rather than inside, and suggested making a snowman once the coffee machine stopped gurgling behind him on the counter.
"You have never built a snowman?"
"Joel, have you ever seen a FEDRA soldier that isn't allergic to everything remotely fun?"
He snorts, sipping his coffee with a smile tugging on his lips, and she tries to swallow enough of his happiness to replace hers, bits and pieces of it gradually disappearing into the cold.
"A snowman is pretty much what it says on the tin, you roll up a bunch of big snowballs, stack them on top of each other and give it a face."
Ellie tries to imagine it, blurry memories of her very first visit to Jackson scratching somewhere at the back of her mind, and while she can't come up with a satisfying enough picture, she's sure her creativity will make up for it. Then, the last part of Joel's sentence fully sinks in, and she surprises herself with the ball of excitement that makes her bounce, almost spilling her cocoa down the front of her shirt.
"A face, you say? Any face?"
Joel is very, very glad the mischievous glint in her eyes has found a different victim today.
The next five minutes are a messy rush as they wiggle themselves into their winter clothing and tie up their boots, almost tripping over each other more than once when Ellie is incapable of standing still, idea blooming in her head. Yesterday, the cold draft alone made her flinch, but when she rips open the door now, gloved up and with a beanie pulled deep into her face, the sting of snowflakes on her cheeks is powerless against her excitement.
Joel shows her how to form proper snowballs, not satisfied until he approves them as 'structurally sound', whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean, and once she gets the hang of it, her ambition rises to the sky. They spend over two hours rolling and pressing together an almost life-sized snow person, with Joel doing the heavy lifting and Ellie carving out more details and giving helpful instructions.
"To the left, no, my left Joel not yours. Lower, it's lopsided now, Joel I said left, are you deaf?"
He stops, snowball, well, snow boulder at this point, really, dangerously balanced against his hip.
"Right, yeah, you are. Still no excuse for sloppy work though," she continues, not the least bit apologetic, and her cheeks hurt with the smile frozen onto her face, Joel's eyes brimming with an adoration that makes her blush.
They are finally done around lunch time, only noticing they missed it when the first people start to trickle back to their houses, heads turning when they pass their front yard. The sky stayed a piercing blue all morning, not a single snowflake in sight anymore, and when she presses herself against Joel's side as tightly as she can with with half a person of fabric between them, his arm wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her in, she no longer needs his happiness to stay warm, brimming with her own. Joel nudges her hat to the side so he can press a kiss to their temple as they admire their piece of art.
The real fun happens a few seconds later, though, when familiar footsteps come up behind them.
"What- Joel what the fuck is that my jacket?"
The snowman is exactly as tall as Tommy, facial features intricately carved by Ellie, a threadbare black blanket imitating his hair, and, to top it all off, Ellie may or may not have stolen some of his brother's clothes to make it as true of an imitation of Tommy as a bunch of snow and stones can be. She turns around, still holding onto Joel, and the stunned look on Tommy's face melts away when he sees the smile on hers.
"He was cold, Tommy, and besides, it suits him way better than you."
Maybe winter isn't going to be so bad after all.
