Please tell me about your P5 headcanons and your shauake AU im begging. Infodump Everything

Hi, thanks for asking! Well, here's the barebones of the AU:

It's a Shuake-centric AU named Fireflies In A Jar. It's essentially a "Akechi heals" AU. It's a mix of the vanilla storyline and Royal storyline.

Essentially, Akira decides to stay in Tokyo after defeating Maruki. He mainly stayed for the Thieves....and Akechi.

See, because the Akechi he saw in Maruki's reality was the real Akechi. He survived. And he wanted to run away from society....from Akira.

Akira (bless him) tries to help Akechi heal properly from Shido's abuse. So the rest of the Phantom Thieves assist as well, but from a distance.

I don't really have headcanons for this AU, but I do have one headcanon for P5 that I hold near to my heart. My hc is that the Metaverse actually affects the PTs in reality, either obviously or subtlety. Like:

Akira laughs like Arsene. On some occasions, he even gains Arsene's wings.

Ryuji sees a pirate ship fly near his home at nights.

Ann sometimes acts like a cat. She likes to scratch Ryuji like A LOT.

Yusuke can withstand the cold (get it cuz goemon has the ice element-)

Morgana's initials are M.Z. The Z shouldn't be there, but he can't help it.

Makoto owns a motorcycle. She takes Haru and Ann for rides. She also picks up Sae from work.

Haru has her PT weapon hidden in her closet somewhere. She jokingly threatens to bring it along with her when one of her friends had their bad day caused by someone.

Since Futaba is the oracle of the group, she knows certain things beforehand. For example, when she's going to type anything on her computer, she already knows what she's going to type.

Akechi can deliberately turn himself psychotic (see; the shuake showtime), and of course he uses it to scare the Thieves. Someone accidentally stepped on his shoe? His face twitches and his eyes glow a terrifying blood red. Then he laughs and say that he's joking- just don't fucking do it again.

Sumire found glass slippers at her doorstep. She keeps them in a box so they don't break.

Considering her own trauma with Kamoshida, she won’t do anything harmful

That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t do something though

She will protect you more then the others in the Metaverse, making sure that you won’t be hurt

The others quickly noticed that (meaning: only Makoto, Haru, Ren and Akechi)

You didn’t, you thought it was just normal

She constantly asks you out and most of the times you say yes

After a while, she stops protecting and helping the others

Now that you did notice.

“Oh don’t worry! It’s nothing!”

You had gotten a lot more stronger after infiltrating her palace once you found out about it

Yusuke Kitagawa

It is no surprise that he is stalking you

And he let’s you know too

You got paranoid after the fact that a huge amount of love letters and creepy poems ended up in you mail box

Your persona is trying to calm you down

You feel like you are going crazy, because you are sure you are being followed on the streets now as well

He tries to comfort you in anyway he can, so you are back on the rails and keep your persona

He is taking it too far, but he can’t stop doing it. He just loves you so much.

You never find out about his palace either

He is having doubts if he should send the photos of you as well that he took when you weren’t looking

Makoto Niijima

Wishes that you would see she is in love with you already

Your will of rebellion and your persona don’t get affected, but hers will

You will notice her change in personality, and notice her persona is slowly changing colors and looks too

At some point, she blurted out that she wants to keep you all to herself

She needs help, and you are more than happy to give it to her

You asked her if she had a palace, to no surprise she does

You stole her heart and she went back to normal, so it’s a happy end :)

Futaba Sakura

It’s hard for her to do anything really

Social anxiety and all

She tries to keep a conversation with you, but only you. No one else is going to be present

You actually help HER will of rebellion and persona get stronger

She just wants to live with you and make you happy, no one will get hurt because of it

She is beginning to learn to tell people to back off though

You thought it was cute

The most healthy relationship in all honesty

Thinks of making a body pillow of you-

Haru Okumura

Might be the worst yandere of all

Literally kidnaps you and kills everyone you know in front of you with her axe so you would fear her and won’t try to run away

She would kill you too if you tried so you would stay with her forever

You are scared, and don’t dare to do anything

So yes, you have lost all the will of rebellion and your persona

She also took your phone away, so it's no use

Bad ending for you reader

Goro Akechi

Tries to convince you to join him instead

Gets angry when you don’t

That’s fine, he will just wait until Joker is killed on the 20th of November anyway

He just kidnapped you after finding out that Joker is still alive

You revealed that you already knew about his true nature, to which he doesn’t deny

Considering you are in his palace where he doesn’t see you as a threat, you don’t get to use your persona as you aren’t transformed

You slowly start to lose your sanity with him but hold on

You never do, you died as Akechi was killed in Shido’s palace, so his palace disappeared as well

No one knew what happened to you, you are only declared as missing

yo i played persona 5 for the first time (III)

Alright, so this post (previous one here and first post in the chain here) is going to be about my general final notes and about Hina as a character.

Despite all my gripes, I did end up enjoying the game. I wouldn't have poured 230 hours into it if I'd hated it.

But most of the enjoyment I wrung from it was a result of the mod and the personal headcanon I spent the whole game developing. I really don't think this game would've been for me without that, which is why I don't intend on playing Persona 4 (well, at least until that game's female protagonist mod gets off the ground). I might play Persona 3 Portable as that game's female protagonist after a little break, though.

Hina never met Kawakami outside of class and never spoke to that politician.

Anyway, as for Hina...

She's maybe my favorite player character in any video game ever. The slight jankiness of her implementation lent her so much charm, and characterizing her was a ton of fun, especially with how close my trans headcanon seemed to the game's reality. Does that affection transfer to Akira/Ren, or other people's genderswapped Jokers? Well, no, not really. I can't say I'm an expert on the way people view Joker as a character, but from a cursory glance, I feel like Hina's distinct enough from the popular interpretation that she's basically an entirely different person slotted into the role of protagonist. Maybe that's conceited of me.

Hina has the most common family name in Japan, and I thought Hina was the most popular given name in Japan in 1999, the year she was probably born. Turns out that wasn't the case, Hina is actually much more popular recently. The actual most popular name for 1999? Miku. So if I'd had accurate data, she may well have been called Miku Satou. Probably not though.

Hina didn't have friends in her hometown, partially because she was really quiet as a kid and partially because everyone started avoiding her after she started coming to school in a girls' uniform.

Hina's parents have been supportive from the beginning. In fact, her name is from them (she requested it). Also, they sent her to Tokyo with a maid outfit in her box of stuff, which is extremely funny. She calls them once a week, early on Sundays. She doesn't tell them about her phantom thief activities.

Hina's legal name is changed, but not her legal gender (people only ever call her Hina, even in situations where they'd have only read her name off legal forms, so her name must legally be Hina).

Hina largely doesn't react when people misgender her because she's used to it.

When Maruki mentioned that Hina might make a good counselor herself someday, the headcanon wheels started turning in my head and I realized that that's really fucking good. Hina wants to go to university to become a youth counselor, because she saw what happens when someone has the worst counselor ever. Not to mention Hina wanting to help kids like her who might not react well to an authority figure telling them how to live is really sweet.

Hina's trying to create a real version of her Phantom Thief outfit she can wear casually. She has red gloves in her winter school outfit! Why else would she have those? She's going to get white glasses frames next.

Hina isn't good at talking to people, but she comes off as confident because she also has a hard time speaking in any particular tone, so she almost always seems to be talking without reservations.

Hina is an only child. (Fairly sure this is an element of most people's imagined Jokers. No way does this person have siblings.)

I don't think most of the harsh things I put in quotes to indicate that Hina said them are things she actually would say. I think she's probably thinking them.

Hina has a gaming PC in her hometown. Her buying that laptop was because she was going stir-crazy from not having access to a desktop computer.

Hina likes Morgana much more than I do. She doesn't think of him as a big brother (lmao), but she does love him like a brother.

In contrast, I think Hina has exactly as much disdain for Mishima as I have.

Hina isn't really invested in Akechi. She thinks he's a terrible weirdo who she wishes would stop talking to her. When she learns about his actual motivations, that switches to thinking of him as kind of pathetic. She wishes he would have talked to her about his issues at all, because she probably could have helped him deal with them like she helps literally everyone else, but she's not so broken up about him not being in her life anymore. (In contrast, I actually quite like Akechi now that I get what they were going for with him.)

Hina is good at schoolwork, but she's lacking in common sense.

Takemi actually never misgendered Hina, and Maruki only did so once. It's pretty funny how the medical professionals are consistently the least transphobic people in the game. I wonder why that is? 🤔

Hina got really good at making coffee and curry in the year she spent at Leblanc.

Hina being shorter than regular Joker is especially funny because her animation speed has to be adjusted, so she walks really fast in cutscenes where she moves places. She has to move that fast to keep up with people.

Hina's relationship with Haru is going to cause an absolutely awful scandal if it ever becomes public. I have no idea how they're going to deal with that, but hopefully they'll figure it out.

Hina doesn't really find any new friends when she moves back home, but she's alright with keeping to herself and focusing on her studies while having friends she can talk to online and a cat who can talk.

Hina might be rejected from a lot of universities for her criminal record or her transness. She might've had her record expunged, but she still spent time in juvie, not to mention the heavily political implications of her actions might risk scandal for any university that she enrolls in. She might end up having to apply to universities abroad, where the Phantom Thieves and the events surrounding them weren't so much in the public consciousness.

Anyway, that's Hina Satou. I might write fic for her someday? But she requires a lot of context to really understand her. I care about her a lot, and people understanding her is important to me for some reason.

I'm so glad you asked! Before I get into individual dynamics, this is what the group is like as a whole

You know those memes about the person trying to control the kids on leashes? Yeah.

So Hifumi is holding the leashes. Robin Goro is sitting on her shoulder, Yusuke is sitting on the ground being dragged, Makoto and Haru got the leashes tangled and and tugging on them, Futaba has fallen on her back and is turtling cause she got yanked while trying to run away, Ryuji is scrambling away, Ann is all cocooned in the harness cause she tried to wiggle it off and is now stuck and being dragged, and Kasumi is carrying her own leash and walking with the group- maybe even skipping

And now for one on one

Hifumi with Yusuke is just- autistic hanging out. Both are doing their own thing silently in the same space. He's sketching, she's studying Shogi techniques- not a word is being spoken. They are best friends

Hifumi and Goro is. It's. When two tired teachers go out for beers energy. They're tired, they love the others but at what cost. They understand each other's suffering

Hifumi and Makoto! They're usually chill. Hifumi apologized for following everyone else in their talk and beliefs about Makoto before but it's water under the bridge. They study together when Haru and Yusuke or Akira/Ren aren't free, and Hifumi has learned that in order to get the best plans from Makoto, she just has to ask Haru and Yusuke to go pick out something. That can sometimes last hours.

As for Hifumi and Haru, well, Haru is a champ at making sure everyone's eating and staying hydrated. She often has little bags of Hifumi's favourite trail mix after learning she doesn't like gooey snacks, and Hifumi likes to go to a bath house or relax at Haru's after press interviews

Hifumi and Futaba is like. It's like. Okay like. Futaba really makes her life hard but that's how she shows affection okay? Not listening, talking over her, making naughty jokes- once Hifumi actually talks to her and finds out that none of it's serious, Futaba turns it down a notch as requested and they mix a little easier

Hifumi and Ryuji. She finds him loud, a little overexcited, but he's like a puppy sometimes. Like a dumb little house-ridden puppy. She just wishes he and Futaba were a little less alike

She and Ann get along great! They both understand stuff about being stuck in the spotlight, pushy parents, all that. They have sleepovers, go get crepes, they're good pals

But Hifumi's best friend is Akira/Ren. She visits him at work at Crossroads, they talk about Queer culture, they really just get each other

🔥 the idea that every relationship the persona 5 protagonist has is purely transactional

It's one of the most interesting things about p5's framing to me, because the idea that the relationships are transactional is suggested multiple times: by Yaldabaoth, by Sae, by Morgana at the beginning, emphasizing you need to make deals, and even by Yusuke at the start of his confidant.

But Morgana was heavily affected by the distortion of Mementos, and by the end of the game, when he's remembering more of who he is, emphasizes visiting confidants not to get things from them, but simply because you might lose the opportunity to see them soon. Yaldabaoth is...literally created from Mementos' distortion. Sae is dealing with her own distortion. Yusuke's tone, I think, suggests he's partially intrigued with the idea of how deals fit into the phantom thief 'aesthetic', but we do also see moments in the game where he's not comfortable with taking help, so the whole 'deal' frame may also have made it easier for him to ask for the help he needed with getting inspiration.

Anyway. At some point in nearly every confidant, Joker goes way above and beyond anything the other person ever asked him to do. For some PT confidants, this is before the confidant even starts--him awakening to save Ryuji's life, stopping when he caught Ann's distress during the phone call and then chasing her down to talk to her and make sure she was okay. For a lot of non-PT confidants, this is how they figure out he's a Phantom Thief lol.

Persona 5's story doesn't really...work if Joker truly viewed all his relationships as transactional. I think it's certainly within interpretation that this is how he tried to start his confidants, especially the ones with adults, just like it's possible within canon that he spent the entire first week at Shujin not really wanting to get involved and needing to be dragged into everything by Ryuji or even that he first told Arsene that yes, getting involved might have been a mistake. (I'm still amused to have encountered players who, having never picked that choice, believed it would be a non-standard game over. To me it's really, really interesting that it's available as a choice and that Ren is ultimately no less of a hero if you choose it.) But at some point, even if he started within that framework, he breaks from it, because he has to. Because pure tit-for-tat, "what can I get out of you" is both how the conspiracy runs and, I think, a dominant mindset in Mementos, where hope has dwindled to a small lost spark and people can't imagine working together to create something better, instead separating themselves into different cells and praying for some miracle to save them.

There's a point I want to make about how Yaldabaoth and Sae both do a lot to frame p5's story with their words, and they're both distorted, so p5's story starts within a distorted framework and then has to break free from that, but I don't know if I have quite the right words for it atm. Like, I think they deliberately tried to invoke that with Yaldabaoth being the one to make the disclaimer about it being a work of fiction, and how that later seems to have a hand in the Thieves disappearing because no one acknowledges them as "real"--he draws the player into erasing the characters they want to support. But, how successfully p5's story actually "breaks free" from the framework is very ymmv. I do think part of it though is that by the end of the game, Joker has successfully failed at keeping nearly every confidant purely business.

Chivalrous Pervert

This is one that I think I feel the need to highlight since for whatever reason, people really like to demonize this part of Ryuji and use it as an excuse as to why he’s actually horrible or no better than characters like Kamoshida.  While I think it’s undeniably true that there are several points in the game where Ryuji shows attraction to the girls and has his moments of admiring them, what I think is also shown during that game that he shows nothing but respect for them and their boundaries - he never tries to make any actual advances on them, is quick to call out others for making the girls uncomfortable and even with Yusuke’s introductory scene - when Ann worries about a guy potentially following her or being a creep, he doesn’t laugh at her or minimize it, he follows her and when Yusuke gets too close, he steps in front of her, along with Joker.  Also, to note is that at the beach, you can make a joke about potentially stealing swimsuits belonging to girls there - Ryuji never once entertains it or goes along with it and it’s one of the few instances where he non-jokingly can potentially call you out for something.  In short, yeah he’s a teenage boy - he likes to admire and he likes to look, but he would never go as far as actually creeping on anyone or making them uncomfortable.

Hidden Depths

There’s definitely a lot more to him than initially meets the eye and I think part of his character is subverting the typical ‘delinquent’ trope - because he really isn’t a delinquent or a bad kid - he’s someone who had something horrible done to him and was treated like a pariah and is acting out and rebelling in whatever way he can.  Even in comparison to Persona 4′s ‘delinquent’, Kanji, he feels extremely mild.  Also, he’s the sort of character who has a pretty unexpectedly deep knowledge about fitness and sports - most people are quick to just write him off as dumb, but he is knowledgeable - about things that he cares about and feels passionately for.

I Just Want to Be Special 

I’ve touched it on a few times that while I do believe that first and foremost, he joined the Phantom Thieves to help others, there’s definitely an element of wanting to be the hero too - to be able to soak up the praise and the attention - yeah of course, it affects his ego and goes to his head - for a time, he has the support of the entire internet behind him and is told by everyone around him that he’s a hero, what he’s doing is right and that people support him.  I think that to someone who never really had anyone to step in for him or to really protect him - as someone who had to really be his own hero, of course the idea of becoming this huge hero and getting all of this attention would really be a big driving force for him.  There is some part of him that’s selfish and thinks about the money, about the girls, about the attention he’d get if people knew it was him.  Getting over this mindset is part of his character arc.

Momma's Boy

 Without a doubt - he cares a lot about helping out his Ma and it’s clear that she means the world to him - I do think that having to have her come in to his school and listen to all of the things that he’s done and how badly he’s messed up - and then having to listen to her apologize to him for not being a better mother to him would have absolutely broken him.  I fully believe he’s someone who truly loves his Ma and wants to make her proud because at the start, she was all that he had and was the one person who truly believed in him, from start to finish.  He thinks the world of her.

No Indoor Voice

Absolutely one of his biggest shortcomings (even if I hate how it’s been used as an excuse for people to godmod) but undoubtedly, Ryuji’s the type of person who is just loud about everything - I know people like that, as they get more excited, their voice raises and they start speaking louder - or they’re the kind of person who just sounds loud all the time.  Those people, in my experience, are the types of people full of energy and passion - people who just love life and every minute of living it and I really do think that sums him up to a tee.  His big mouth undoubtedly gets him in trouble because he doesn’t really think to try and lower his voice or be a little bit more subtle, but it’s just part of who he is.

Phantom Thieves having a crush headcanons

Ren Amamiya

He tends to lay it on thick

He won’t flat out confess, but he will say various things that are definitely not leaving much room for questions

He’ll use cheesy pick up lines as well as just as cheesy nicknames that are exclusive to s/o

To be fair to s/o if they don’t think he’s serious: he does playfully flirt with his friends. //cough Ryuji

He is the master at catching glances without being caught and he uses that to his advantage. No one will know he’s got his eyes on s/o 

If s/o manages to catch him looking at them, he is a little bit caught off guard and his face may blush a little bit

Ren doesn’t really mind if any of his friends tease him about the crush. But honestly he isn’t going to really talk about his crush- at least, not that often. He just doesn’t see times to really mention it

Usually pretty calm and relaxed whenever he’s around to s/o. However, sometimes if s/o catches him off guard he could be left stuttering a bit. And by catching off guard is more so friendly, unexpected gestures or seeing how adorable s/o’s laugh is

Daydreams about the possibility of his crush reciprocating his affections. Honestly, he never really thinks on the possibility of rejection. That rarely, if ever, crosses his mind.

Ren starts to get really, genuinely nervous when it comes to giving an actual confession and/or s/o confessing. He kind of seems more shy-ish and blushy

His first assumption was this just meant he felt a surge of inspiration for his art

It's weird. Nothing really inherently changes with how he acts around his crush. If anything, he is just trying to be around them more now or is talking about how their beauty is unrivaled

Is really shameless whenever he looks at them and really isn’t trying to hide it

If they watch him do his art, or are just around, he finds it harder to focus and he feels a weird type of pressure now to do well-

Finds himself observing them and becomes keenly aware of some of their quirks

Yusuke is gonna daydream and someone is gonna need to snap this boy out of it

Will start trying to find excuses to touch s/o, whether he’s actually aware he’s doing that or not is up to you.

Feels kind of honored in a way whenever his crush compliments his art

Is super unsure how to approach it and it really doesn’t take much to get her blushing. S/o just looking her way and offering that smile to her will do it

Makoto finds herself often kind of "fleeing" the scene cause she just doesn't know what to do 

And she isn't the best when it comes to being secretive when looking their way. Her face bursts to red if/when she is caught by her crush if she has a book handy her face is going right in there

Confides in Ann and is ultimately asking her for help 

Has also for sure confided in Sae if she had any helpful advice

Someone please help her

She is pretty stiff when around her crush, even when sitting across from them

Uses school as a way to help her get closer to her crush. "Why don't we study together? That way we can help each other."

Futaba Sakura

Futaba would need someone to tell her how she’s feeling. Like, she kind of has a . . .guess of what it is she’s feeling. But she really isn’t gonna gonna grasp it

Futaba becomes a lot more talkative when it comes to her crush. A lot. Not only that but she will definitely talk with more nerdy lingo. {Someone smite her if they don't understand something she said}

While not super blushy, unless her crush touches her, she is VERY fidgety. Rocking on her heels, playing with her pockets, playing with her hands-

Stealing glances is 50/50. Sometimes she is as good as Ren, other times her skills are on the wavelength of Ryuji

May sometimes attempt to doll herself up for s/o. However, doing this is usually super subtle as well as rare

If she can, Futaba kind of prefers things like calling her crush. Because they can't see her and it helps the nerves. But the part she isn't a fan of is being unable to see them. Plus, hearing their voice over tech just isn’t the same as hearing it when they are standing next to one another

Like Ann, she would kind of prefer to take these feelings to the grave than say them outloud. It's embarrassing and she really doesn't want to feel what rejection feels like

That’s the part she’s feels the most uneasy about 

Haru Okumura

She knows exactly what she is feeling. Now its more of a question of what it is she’s going to do with them

Will more often invite them to cafes or just quaint places in general

No real nervous ticks or anything, a lot like Ren and Yusuke honestly

She prefers not to confess, as she doesn't want to risk putting any kind of wedge in the friendship she has

Not like she can't though, but she will holdout against doing so for a while

Gets nervous if she learns someone flirted with her crush or her crush flirts with someone else, regardless if it's playful

May actually push her a bit more towards the idea of a confession if that happens

Offers to buy things for her crush sometimes. She can afford it and she would love nothing more than to see them smile even if its something typically expensive and they insist she doesn’t have to do that

Whenever s/o offers to help garden with her she’s already smiling so wide and sounding a little excited before she can really do anything about it

Whenever people talk about Ren having cat behaviours they always talk about the cute things but fuck that I wanna see him do all the weird and creepy stuff cats do.

Things like suddenly looking at an empty space of the room with a startled expression before continuing with whatever he's doing as if nothing happened, or stretching into really weird and uncomfortable looking positions to do something completely unrelated, or randomly deciding he doesn't like a food that's been his favourite for a while and acting really annoying and clingy when he's hungry.

I've seen so many cute catboys... I think it's time for some weird catboys.

As a weird catboy myself (guys no lie I laid in a giant box as a joke and fell asleep in it lol) I am all for this!

When Ren’s hanging out at Leblanc with his friends he’ll randomly stare at a corner in silence then go back to what he’s doing and every time everyone is just like “??? WHAT IS IT IS THERE A GHOST??!!” fr Makoto HATES when he does that and Futaba and Ryuji find great amusement in it.

Sitting in uncomfortable look positions? Definitely. One time Ann came to visit and she found Ren laying on his bed… but with his upper half hanging off the side while he’s playing fucking animal crossing. Ann was staring at him for a good five seconds before saying “… there is NO goddamn way that’s comfortable.”

I headcanon that Ren’s got a love-hate relationship for things like shrimp and prawns. Sometimes he’ll happily eat a bunch and others times if he sees it on his plate he’ll literally hiss at it. One time Maruki cooked a meal that had shrimp in it and he had to contain his laughter as Ren picked it all out with his chopsticks like a grumpy lil kid.

As for him being clingy when he’s hungry… everyone actually likes it! Ren usually keeps to himself so his clinginess is like a sign of trust. Ryuji, Haru, Yusuke and Ann love when Ren is cuddling up to them wether or for affection or for snacks! He gets many snacks and head scratches! Ren straight up straddled Goro’s lap once when he was hungry and was trying to get his attention. Goro claimed he despised the action… yet now he pulls Ren into his lap all the time just to feed him snacks.

Ryuji can play the piano and has had lessons since he was 7-ish

After Futaba woke up post-palace, one of the first things she did as ‘social situation training’ was head to the arcade and completely ace its equivalent to DDR. She has held the highest score on 90% of the songs since then

Yusuke (autistic icon) had a weird period of time where he would greet the PT Gang with a kiss on the cheek. Haru thought it was endearing, so now it’s just a normal thing for those two

Literally every one of Ann’s friends has walked in on her singing (read: attempting to sing) before. You think she would get quieter about it since she gets so embarrassed, but nope, she still continues screeching her heart out. Queen behavior.

LGBT+ Headcanons for the Phantom Thieves

So I beat the final and post game bosses for Persona 5 Strikers yesterday so to celebrate I want to make a post I’ve wanted to do for a while now. I’m always of the mind that anything can be improved by making it gayer so I have my whole set of LGBT headcanons for the Phantom Thieves. Because the idea of rebellious LGBT kids fighting the evils of society speak to me on a near religious level.

1. So I am very much a “I am Joker” kind of role-player. So my Joker, like me, is gay. He is very much in love with a certain lovable blond beef cake on the team. And he hates it when a lovely lady confesses to him and he can’t just tell them that so they don’t blame themselves when he has turn them down. “YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL I SWEAR! I’M JUST A RAGING HOMOSEXUAL!”

2. Both Ryuji and Ann are Chaotic Bisexual tm. Ryuji definitely prefers girls, but he’s really attracted to anyone he thinks is pretty, like Joker. He’s shows his affection through physical touch mostly. Sitting next to Joker with an arm around him, casually resting his head on his shoulder. ALL OF THE CUDDLES! Ann prefers girls as well but she’s not opposed to relationships with men. That being said she is in a very committed relationship with her girlfriend Shiho. That “I love you” on top of the roof was actually a confession and I do not take criticism on this.

3. Yusuke is a transman. One of the things that really interests me about Yusuke is his expression of masculinity. His arcana is The Emperor which is usually associate with masculine qualities and Yusuke expresses his in a very loud but still soft way, so it made for an interesting idea to have him be trans showing there is no “right way” to project masculinity. He came out really young and this was one of those instances where Madarame shows he wasn’t a complete dirtbag by actually being supportive of Yusuke, and even helping him go on hormones and receive top surgery when he wanted it. If someone tries to misgender Yusuke the rest of the thieves practically have to be restrained. Haru definitely pulls out her axe and just stands there with a smile on her face that says, “misgender my friend again, and I’m going to identify as a problem.”

4. Makoto and Haru are the hard and soft lipstick lesbian couple of the group. They invoke a lot of Ruby and Sapphire energy, in that almost nothing gets done on their own because they’re too busy being wholesome and flirty with each other. When they started dating, after Haru broke off her engagement, Sugimura showed up on one of their dates enraged. He tried to grab Haru, and Makoto was not having any of that. She punched him so hard he lost a couple of teeth. When he ran away, Haru was just so overwhelmed with how hot Makoto was in that moment she just kissed her there for the first time and Makoto brain shut down for a few seconds.

5. I was going to have Futaba be asexual but there is, weirdly, a lot of dialogue where she is fascinated with Ann’s chest… so instead she’s a nonbinary lesbian. As far as pronouns Futaba doesn’t really have a preference. If she was really pushed, she’d say “either she/her or they/them, but whatever”. The hang-ups concerning gender just don’t interest them, so whatever you use they are pretty chill either way. But they do love some pretty girls, particularly red heads.

6. Goro is a trash-sexual. He identifies as trash, lived as trash, and died as trash.

7.Sumire is asexual however. She’s not really sex repulsed per say she just doesn’t feel interest in it. If her partner wanted to she could no problem but she would always prefer grabbing something to eat instead.

8. Sophia does lost of research to try and figure out where her connection to gender and sexuality lie. After doing a lot of soul searching on the matter she determines she is demisexual. She doesn’t really experience physical attraction until she develops a strong emotional attachment to someone.

9. Zenkichi has been around, lets just say. He’s a bisexual man, but he was never really able to act on his attraction to men when he was younger. And he thinks he might be past the point of dating given his career. The other thieves aren’t having this since they can see he wants to form a connection with someone, and also thinks Akane needs another parent in her life seeing at how busy he is. So he starts dating again, this time going to a few men only events to explore that aspect of himself more. Akane just tells him to find someone who makes him happy.

“Ryuji. You got something on your face.”

Ren’s a stoic guy, but when he rubs at Ryuji’s cheek with a napkin, he’s nothing sort of gentle about it. Ann snorts, calling him hopeless, but Ryuji can only focus on Ren’s face. The glasses make Ren’s eyes look wide, and it’s such an attentive gaze that the other is giving him.

So much so that Ryuji can’t help but scoff.

“Geeeez, what are ya, my wife?”

“More like your mother,” is Ren’s simple response. “Son.”

Seriously, Ryuji could’ve died from how that made him choke.

“D-Dude?! No! Don’t make that shit so weird?! I don’t mind ya looking after me, but...” Despite himself, he chuckles. “For real, I really, really appreciate it! I like it, even, but you can’t go replacing my mom.”

“It’s a joke,” Ren said flatly.

“We should probably work on your delivery, Ren,” Ann offers. “You’re sounding too much like Yusuke.”

“A joke!” Ren exclaimed, with only a little more affectation.

“A-Aren’t ya embarrassed at all?!” Ryuji couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Seriously, dude—!”

Ah.

I really like him.

At some point, it became its own embarrassing thing.

“You’re such an idiot sometimes, Ren-Ren,” he hums, and Ren just blinks back at him. Ann smacks him.

“You’re one to talk!”

She’s right, but it’s Ren he’s focusing on.

“You’re really—caring? A caretaker? You’d make a good wife, for real...but you’re a guy, so that’s a problem.”

“Really?” Ann asked. “I think it makes him more of a catch, not that I’m interested or anything.”

Weirdly, despite not having any interest in Ann at all, it was a relief to hear her say something like that.

He hadn’t realized why that day, of course. He wouldn’t realize it the next day, either.

“I don’t think it’s dumb to take care of your friends,” Ren would say. Simple and sweet.

“For real? You’re not embarrassed at all?”

Ren shook his head, leaving it at that. Simple. Steadfast. There was no doubting he’d follow this guy to the ends of the earth.

I really, really like him.

Of course he always admired Ren. Despite being shat on, Ren was the kind of guy who always kept his cool. Even when facing down shitty adults. Even when facing down scary as shit shadows. Ren could reassure anyone just with a confident grin and a few select words.

It’s only inevitable that Ryuji really, really like him.

But at some point, you do realize there’s more to it.

It’s easy to like Ren. He’s not only cool but also trustworthy. Attentive. Such a great listener. It’s so easy that it’s insane to think he’s not all that popular at school just because of a stupid fake criminal record. Ren was the kind of friend that anyone would be lucky to have. He’s cool and smooth and—just. The best.

He’s just...also a guy. As likeable and awesome as Ren was...was it also normal to like him this much? To think stuff like, “if you were a girl, I’d totally marry you—actually I’d still get married to you if you wanted to?”

Ryuji’s not a smart guy. He’s not too great at thinking. And it’s so much to think about that he ends up swallowing lumps. And it’s so damn lame, seriously, what the hell was he even doing thinking about Ren like that?

Even if he had realized it, he hadn’t accepted it. He told himself it was out of respect for Ren, but it was really out of fear.

But it’s fine. Ren’s his best friend. He’d do anything for that guy, and he’s more than happy to be the best man down the line. He’s more than cool with that. He’s happy with that.

It’s all a what-if, sure, and thinking about Ren married to some hot chick does make him want to die a little inside. Not to mention he doesn’t even know what Ren’s type was considering how cagey Ren got whenever asked... But it’s whatever.

It’s not as fine as it could be with that damn Akechi though.

“Another long work day, is it? Ren?”

God, the fucking way that jackass even says Ren’s name gets Ryuji’s skin crawling. But since that jerk blackmailed his way into the thieves, Ryuji was very annoyingly told to hold his tongue especially since there had been that big nasty fight with Morgana not too long ago. Although Morgana didn’t like Akechi either.

And who the hell would?

Besides so much of Tokyo who didn’t see past that plastic fucking smile—

“Boss is just out on errands,” Ren was saying. Ever polite. Ever calm. What a cool guy. “I don’t mind working extra...”

Akechi laughs, making Ryuji shudder with disgust.

“You’re such a considerate person. I’d envy whoever had the fortune of marrying you, Ren.”

What the hell kinda thing is that to say to a guy?! Ryuji thinks, but when his eyes flicker to Ren—

“Ah.”

Something—happens.

“Do you really think so?”

Ren’s a hard guy to read. Ryuji doubts even the so-called detective would be able to fully pick up on it, but to someone who considers himself Ren’s best friend, he can see it as clear as day. The slight widening of Ren’s eyes, the subtle twitches in his expression and—most damningly, the way he tilts his head so that his fringe hides more of his face.

“Are you nervous?” Akechi asks cheerfully, chuckling into his hand. “What a surprisingly endearing side of you. You really are interesting, Ren.”

“I can’t believe you’re nervous!!” Ryuji had laughed, slapping him on the back. “It’s actually kinda cute, Ren-Ren!”

“Urf.” Ren had coughed a little before sighing. “Shouldn’t you be embarrassed to say something like that?”

“Y-Yeah, but...”

“Should I get you some water to cool down, Ryuji?” Ren had asked, back to cool, untouchable Ren-Ren, just like that.

Ren was blushing now. Akechi’s sickening smile broadens—except, in reality, it must look soft and warm to someone who actually likes him.

And Ren is the furthest thing from cool and untouchable right now.

“You’re too much,” Ren mutters, but when he smiles—oh. “The usual, right, Akechi?”

“Please do!”

Watching all this, Ryuji couldn’t say a thing even if he wanted to. He couldn’t even begin to think.

Joker { Akira Kurusu }

✧ He can empathise with the feeling of being in a fish-out-of-water situation. Although he had not moved countries, being in a new city can be just as confusing. The first thing he offers to do is show them around Shibuya, pointing out anything that is a point of interest. On the first few days, Akira helps them with train lines & signs, ensuring that they get to school safely.

✧ Language barriers may be difficult but he would definitely attempt to learn their first language. It is incredibly adorable to watch him trip over a word the first few times he tries to pronounce it but he actually picks it up rather quickly. Whole conversations end up in their language in order to help him practise. In return, he offers to help them with their Japanese. He is an incredibly caring teacher & is very patient if they struggle with any of the words.

✧ Non-verbal communication becomes quite important. If Akira is struggling to get across his meaning in either language, he will try & show what he means through actions. Because he is a man of few words, he actually finds it easier to not use words. The showing actually brings the two closer together, as they can actually understand each other’s body language.

Skull { Ryuji Sakamoto }

✧ Although learning another language is out of the question because he would get frustrated about all of the grammar, Ryuji would do his best to learn some of the basic lines in order to get around in their country. However, learning Japanese from Ryuji would not be recommended. His use of slang & other abbreviations can be confusing. Instead, he brings Makoto along to help them out because he knows that she is a very good teacher.

✧ He has the location of all the best spots in Tokyo fixed straight into his mind. Every day is a new adventure because he loves to bring them along to a new ramen shop or the arcade. Ryuji would also try his best to find a place that sells some of the food from their country. Even if it is only something small like a snack, he would gingerly offer it them one day after school.

✧ If other people ostracise them in school, he would be more than happy to introduce them to the Phantom Thieves, especially Ann because she went through the same problems as a Quarter-American. Even if they do not get many chances to hang out all together because they have to do a lot of work together, he would take some time for his significant other to get to know the others in their own time.

Fox { Yusuke Kitagawa }

✧ Yusuke is on an entirely different wavelength from other people in terms of his learning, so it would be likely that he would pick up another language quite fast. The mind of an artist can be quite strange. If they offered to teach him, he would offer to help with Japanese in return. Often, he uses vastly over complicated metaphors in order to explain but he manages to convey the basics. There may be issues with communicating with him because he uses such flowery language but he eventually learns to tone it down.

✧ Would be super interested in learning about their own culture, as it may perhaps inspire his art style. Other people can be a great source of learning is something Yusuke learned from Akira. The next few paintings of his come out as strange to other members of Japanese society but there are a lot of references to his significant other’s culture & he ends up representing it well. Clearly he did his research.

✧ Honestly, asking about cultural norms from Yusuke would be difficult because he does not follow them himself. The two of them stand out a lot amongst other members of the public but he appears to be proud of someone who is so different, much like himself.

Crow { Goro Akechi }

✧ Out of everyone, Akechi would put the most dedication into making sure that they are comfortable. Not everyone is going to be understanding so he does his best to make up for it. Without them knowing { because he wants to suprise them }, he learns their language & ends up asking them something rather complicated when he feels comfortable enough to speak it in a conversation. Watching them smile was more than worth it & it allows them to speak more.

✧ Unlike everyone else, he would understand that they might struggle with some of the concepts of Japanese society & gently explains it to them. For example, the conservative views on affection could be quite the shock to them if they come from a country that is more widely accepting of PDA. Anything they do not understand he is more than willing to clarify, though he does not baby them at all.

✧ Definitely takes them to the Jazz Club at some point. It becomes an occurrence that can only be as regular as Akechi’s schedule lines up but it can simply be somewhere for the two of them to go on a date without fear of being harassed by fans & they are both able to talk, switching between the two languages if that is what they were more comfortable with.
