changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.

I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.

Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.

No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.

But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

would i be crazy to say that billy could be a college football coach and you the new doctor for the team...

maybe he played college football and then he later got hired back to the same school he played for not that many years later

he jokes when he meets you that you may need to do a physical check up on him with the way the team runs him ragged since he's young for a coach and so they get him to play a bit with them and you flirt a bit telling him your door is always open if he wants one

Omg omg ok so I’ll say I don’t know much abt football but I DO KNOW ABT ROMCOMS and also in my head football coaches are just. Always mad

the players constantly joke and talk to you, a lot of the time really middle schoolish jokes and Billy is always huffing and grabbing them by the back of their jersey, pulling them to apologize even though its fairly harmless stuff like “doc I think j got a concussion can you kiss it better” and you know they don’t really mean much but Billy won’t have that round you

And you stand on the sidelines with him and a few other coach staff and he shouts and curses after a bad play, puts his fist over his lips in that “omfg I’m gonna spew hell” expression, then he remembers you’re there and he puts his hand out like “M’ sorry, forgot there’s a lady.” But after you say it’s fine he goes “but they really are fuckin’ meatheads, ‘scuse my French!”

The players prolly say something about how their coach keeps on staring at the new doc and he makes them do 50 40’s and burpees and shit 😭😭

she’ll come up behind you and stand with her hands clasped behind her back and her chin inches from your shoulder but will just stay there and let you keep doing whatever you were doing

if you’re making dinner, talking to someone, really just staying in one place for any reason at all, she’s gonna be right there

it’s cute most of the time except when you don’t notice and turn your head and run into her or have the jumpscare of your life

it’s especially cute when she’s on top of you and will top for a moment, your lips inches apart as you lock eyes and just enjoy being close to each other
