twelve which really doesn’t feel like enough because i have at least twice that many in progress in my google docs woops

mmmm i think two ... point five. ish. there were some rough attempts when i was quite young but i didn’t get anything readable up until one or two for orphan black-- all of my actual work that i’m proud of is here in supergirl.

very very rarely, and mostly that’s just because i never really know a way to provide a meaningful response that doesn't just boil down to “thank you!!!”

and tbh i feel weird about this all the time because receiving comments makes me smile like an idiot at my phone and i go all squiggly and happy and excited so i probably really should be answering them but i just . i never know what to say that doesn’t look very impersonal!

god yeah but a lot of it never makes it to the publish stage and i should really change that because sex is what gets all the hits lads

not an entire fic, no, but i’ve had some scenes and paragraphs taken and hidden behind very thinly veiled reworks

yes! a lovely person called R_H_Felidae_Athena actually translated a bunch of my little minifics into Mandarin which i think is the loveliest thing in the world

12. Have you ever co-written a fic?

i haven’t! i’m not sure i’d be any good at it because i’m shit at deadlines and i also have very very little structure to my writing process and it’s a lot of “idk it just feels this way in my head” lmao

13. All time fav ship?

every ship feels like your all time fav ship when you’re in it doesn’t it? so right now absolutely supercorp-- i’ll admit i’ve put more time and work into this ship than others but i’ve had some that really really touched me and that i’ve put a lot of my heart into in the past

14. WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

ah jesus i have so many. almost two years ago i started writing an au (based on one throwaway line in s5) where kara and lena meet because lena’s running through national city and has a security team following her at a distance and kara thinks she sees a woman being followed followed and steps in and beats the hell out of the security team and lena can’t stop laughing hard enough to tell her they’re hired and then kara takes her to lunch as an apology

girl honestly i don’t even know i’m winging it every single time

16. Writing weaknesses?

fucking TENSES. i tend to swap between them here and there and then it confuses the focus or the intimacy of the scene and sometimes it’s very difficult to tell how far of a lens the reader is supposed to be watching through and it’s just gggaghhhhhlgjddj one day i’ll learn to write in past tense i swear

17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

i’ve not really found myself needing that very much but if i did run across a scenario where it was unavoidable i’d probably try to find a native speaker before i wrote anything of substance so as not to be deeply embarrassing lol

i have a soft spot for this one because i wrote it all in one manic go and it just poured out of me in a way that worked so well on the first try and it got really nice reception and it’s by far one of my proudest even though it’s but a short little thing :’)

✧ this is mostly in order to save streaks

✧ he’s so bad at streaks

✧ “why does it matter?? what’s the point of sending just black screens or whatever’s in front of you at the moment??”

✧ can’t keep a consistent streak for more than 3 days and also doesn’t care (until hinata challenges him to see who can have the longer one)

✧ when you send him videos of him playing, he really focuses on them to try to improve his technique. asks you to send those vids to him (assuming u saved them, which u did)

✧ but when you look over his shoulder when he’s watching a video and give him some compliment (“i recorded at the perfect moment! that was a really good set, kageyama!”), he gets a bit flustered

✧ gets even more flustered but pretty happy whenever you post videos on your story showing karasuno winning some points with captions like:

You don’t have to like it when people write in books, just because the people who do are more “open-minded” and “sweet.”

"Books are meant to get messy, not to end up as museum pieces"

True. But not everyone appreciates books the same way. Some like them without text that’s not meant to be there, and if certain people don't think they're supposed to be museum pieces, why do they condone writing additional text in the book? Or underline, highlight, color in the book and then share it with the community, where they know a lot of people are going to read it? Seems that all of our takeaways from what we read are meaningful and beautiful, so that would be adding “art” to the book? So, I write in a book because it’s not the same thing as a museum piece, but does that mean my writing isn’t a kind of artistry?

We’re not all the same, so not all will go “Oh, I’m so happy this person wrote in this book, before me!”? It’s great to keep books like that to own, in case you want to re-read or for the sake of the memories attached with the book. Like, a journal within a book. Personally, I wouldn’t want to let go of something like that.

You’ll find someone’s scribblings or notes in another book, from the library or used book-store (?), it’s not uncommon. But once I was reading a library book and it had a note at the top of a late chapter in the book...

“Skip this chapter! You’re welcome!” Um...

And no matter how used a copy is or worn out, the only way the experience of reading the book gets cheapened (for me) is if I turn the page and there’s a bunch of squiggly lines or colored underlining, and then I’m taken out of the moment. For me, it interrupts the author’s voice.

It’s different for everyone, but if books are getting donated or shared, and they have writing in it or artwork or an excessive amount of highlighting, it’s almost mocking or degrading to the next reader. Like, if I were the one who got to read the copy before the next guy and made my mark on the book by adding my pen to the pages, hoping or assuming the next reader would be grateful for what I added to the author’s book...I wouldn’t feel good, doing that.

I’m not sweet. I’m not nice. I’m honest. I don’t like it when people write in books and then donate them, assuming others won’t mind. A lot of people won’t! Some will be filled with joy at the sight of the underlining. But not all.

A note or two is one thing, but what if you’re reading a book and then encounter underlining four or five pages, back-to-back? Or text that’s crossed out and written notes “This is inappropriate” “Don’t read this page” or translations of what the author is trying to say (according to the previous reader), because the person assumes it’s going to be beyond the understanding of others?

That’s why I don’t write in books, and don’t like it when I encounter it in other books. I expect it with shared books, but not to such a degree, where it’s pages and pages and....I can’t. I donate books, but always check to make sure there are no notes or scribbles in them. before doing so. I’m not saying this makes me special or whatever. I’m not better. Just wondering if anyone else chooses not to write in books, out of respect for the next reader?

Other Person: “I believe in sharing books BTW!” ❤😁💖💕✨

Me: “I believe in sharing books with respect.” 😉

Tabbing and highlighting and journaling is great, but why would anyone want to part with something so personal and special to them? If a book has been heavily tampered with or altered, I just wouldn’t assume others would get my notes or scribblings, so I’d keep it as a “museum piece.”

Both sides are valid.....BOTH SIDES. I feel that this side doesn’t get to speak out as often as the other one does (not true really, but why do I feel like the bad guy, all the time?). Are we the lesser side? Are we less “open” and “giving” and “positive” and shit?

There is no wrong way to share books, so maybe this was just a rant that means nothing. I just don’t want to add to the experience of reading any book for the first time, by adding my musings to the author’s text, is all. Or underlining something that carries especial meaning for a group of people, but not everyone. Or underling an entire chapter, for the hell of it.

Anyway.....read something. Lol.

Also, a hot tip: If you’re reading a used book, or a library book......It’s super-possible the book has been read before you by someone else, so you don’t need additional notes or underlining as a sign that someone else handled the book before you. I could be wrong about that, though... 😂

Do you own a black leather jacket? A pleather one, yes. Something badass about wearing one haha.

Do you find musicians or athletes more attractive? I’ve been attracted to more musicians, but that’s cause I’m more familiar with them. I don’t see a lot of athletes as someone who doesn’t watch or care at all about sports. Although, guys in baseball uniforms are nice. haha. In what season and episode did you realised that Destiel went from subtext to actual text?

Difficult question really. I don’t exactly have a magic switch of some weird personal set goalpost I have, and frankly, wasn’t even really a shipper, just defended shippers, until... 13.5/6. I think I started slipping after 12.19 because I’m not a moron, I don’t live under a rock, I have eyes and know what the fuck a mixtape means to Gen X. But I kept it at arms reach because even Carver era was so totally subtextual-- atop all the stuff that got cut S10 after the S9 blowout, I didn’t exactly want to invest myself as much as point out shippers weren’t crazy for seeing what they saw, especially S8/9+ and even prior the resonance of the hero’s journey over our entire human civilization and historical othering of queerness made earlier readings or notices of it completely fair even if not really like, directional by the crew?

But to begin, Carver era was when I saw /intentful and meritful construction of the body of text, via subtext, to subtextually tell a story with classic queer coding./ Because a lot of what this fandom calls queer coding makes me want to hide my face behind a quantum hole of facepalms and is often like, pretty much the reverse of what should be advocated or considered. All those retro old “he’s been written as queer from S1″ make me want to kick puppies or something because oh my god it’s Not Good, most of the content there is Very Bad And Hugely Problematic, and it’s an attempt to retroactively prove what old canon was doing without any substance.

Carver era was the shift to substance, but silent substance. Subtext that’s genuinely thematically scaffolded into the storyline in a way that while the events themselves were largely cued on subtext, consideration of that subtext was critical to understanding the full body of text and people that refused to grow into and adapt with that text as the tone shifted are the ones that got more and more confused and angry.

Dabb era was the threshold crossing into (often low-visibility) text. Fandom intentionally arguing points that require complete removal from social structures (which is everything from regional meanings of major symbols, social codes, language, or why-letters-mean-things) doesn’t mean shit doesn’t mean what it means. A mixtape isn’t subtext any more than getting on one knee and popping open a box is subtext even if they don’t verbalize the words. We know what these fucking things mean and anyone who doesn’t is in DESPERATE need of going outside and experiencing the real world before making any kind of social commentary on a body of text.

When it comes to dialogue text, Last Call is where Bi Dean or at least Queer Umbrella Dean was textualized. Again, it doesn’t matter if people don’t understand the long argued history that was put to bed about repeat sexual encounters with men, it doesn’t matter what the gender of the other triplets were, literally none of that matters. It doesn’t matter if the person understands it. It doesn’t matter if they know their queer culture enough to know their arguments were already buried. It is what it is.

There’s this disillusionment that unspoken physicalized shit like kissing or sex, or verbalized ones like “I love you,” but “I love you, in a gay way, specifically and only you, and want to be romantic with you” because every other statement of the like so far has people crying or arguing about it as not enough either.

These things are nice, but it is not the only way to deliver a textual romance. These are things we want and deserve, and people aren’t wrong for wanting them, the only wrong comes in deleting other text because it isn’t the style of text they want. 100% unhelpful.

Text in AV is complex. No matter how decontextualized people try to pretend this all is, throwing pasta at the wall and calling it an argument worth validating, AV media study doesn’t just incorporate social codes on shit like dialogue -- though anyone that applies those social codes wouldn’t be arguing anyway, as per my old post on that -- but visual language and TV literacy are a long studied topic and are just as relevant as understanding of textual/verbal language and having textual literacy. People trying to eschew these in the interest of favoring fanspaces to try to keep them equal within the canon, which is NOT what fandom space equality is supposed to be about, is just... lol.

When that soap opera reporter that doesn’t even watch the show wandered in commenting on the full mise en scene of the 15.03 breakup being classical “Dark Point in the Romance” framing, that’s not subtext. In a book, characters aren’t running around on a blank canvas. Their environments are the text.

What people may draw symbolically out of an environment varies, and if someone’s /interpretation/ holds up, that’s fine. But being able to digest the entire presentation of a work, that is to say, to read an entire scene in a book and understand their setting and the relevance of that setting is simply a form of text. And when literal fucking randos can spot classic cinematography, it’s time to consider what the full cinematic framework is telling you both in incremental minutiae of texts and in the full body of work.

So basically, I acknowledged lowkey text based on the most basic understanding of social codes, by 12.19, even if I was still kinda eyerolling about it. By 13.5/6, Castiel returned to Dean in something later echoed by Eileen for the zoom shot, but the rest of the arrangement was verbatim identical to the original ending of Swan Song with Lisa, with the only difference being “Never too late” wasn’t a verbal line, but an entire sound track they applied to highlight the scene.

Despite the Swan Song parallel ending reactives went up in arms about the fact that they weren’t having big romantic moments anymore and kinda failed to wrap braincases around the fact that the endgame reunion that was literally the ORIGINAL endgame shot, which ALSO didn’t include physicality (in fact, the text read, “this isn’t sexual at all. He’s a lost soul, and she’s his home” in the script for Lisa), and this dumbass fandom would go “SEE PROOF THAT MEANS THE TEXT MEANS IT WASNT SEXUAL AND HE JUST BECAME BEST FRIENDS THAT WAS HER BEDWARMER MAYBE SHE HAS COLD FEET AT NIGHT” and that’s not how this fucking WORKS. Common sense is NOT removed from fucking discussion and what sense is applied needs to be levelly-- again, social codes.

So at 13.5/6 I had considered it textually paramount to the original endgame arrangement. S14 was just... blatant ass domesticity. Dean got his happy ending. He had his family. He got his win, his everything. They spoke frequently in the kitchen -- only vaguely over cases, more slapping around idioms, eyerolling over barbarous eating, and occasionally discussing how to raise their son. In fact, if you look at non-research-non-casework S14 kitchen scenes I’m gonna let you sit there and map out what all those domestic moments in the heart of the kitchen was, minding 13.5/6.

It was something gained. It was their life. And it was something to lose. 14.18 already advert framed it, we all saw it. Troubled family. People delete history of what is connected where to pretend “we” is vague or makes the romance any less of a canon piece and lmao guys

And season 15 is their year long run where they’re spearheading a huge part of the plot and will be a critical final resolution.

Speaking of 13.5/6 and social codes, anyone remember that Jack hadn’t met Dave Mather and looked at one nonphysical picture of them and recognized “he’s her boyfriend”? SOCIAL CODES MEAN SHIT GUYS.

So there’s no magic moment. There’s S8/9 coding and subtext. There’s S12′s tape and other elements -- tape is just the easiest to nail down but several through the year tbh -- there’s S13′s Never Too Late, and all things that followed that in waterfall. There’s S14′s established domesticity with Castiel having essentially moved into the bunker, something that wasn’t even entirely established in S12 yet even if he was more frequent there than Carver era.

Without social codes, I could argue that “Dean loves pie” doesn’t actually mean he loves pie. In fact, I could argue those letters mean nothing, because basic social codes are what even give words meanings. Without them these are just squiggly lines on a screen. If I eschew social codes, I could take a “love me some pie” line from Dean and say it means he fornicates with children and make long convoluded excuses around it instead of the observable fucking fact that Dean fucking Winchester likes goddamn pie.

Waiting for your perfect personally dreamed magic moment for a landmark to call text generally disregards the full body of the text and merit of the work. The amount of time and effort this FUCKING shipping fandom has put into -- even Destiel shippers -- bashing down and calling blatant ass text subtext because it’s not the text they want -- just because they want to argue with people that threw the logic baby out with the destiel bathwater they thought was dirty -- it’s fucking embarrassing tbqh. Imagine if people’s competitive fandom BS was muted how anyone here would be addressing this body of text.

Like. “After Carver directed Misha to play Castiel as a jilted lover in season 9, Cain through S10 escalated it into Castiel as Colette, which was confirmed by both the author and actors, seating him as a lover, as Sam was Abel the brother; by season 11, pining and connected hearts becomes the driving theme of the show, repeatedly denounced both in text and showrunner commentary that it wasn’t Amara that was that romance, and instead, a different one rose; by season 12, domestic arguments were many, mixtapes were shared, coming into rooms and playing people for things secretly stashed under pillows were a hinging plot moment, by season 13 he was the Never Too Late Big Win as a far more powerful version of Lisa, by season 14 Castiel moved in, by season 15 their giant sacred marriage euchartist ceremonies on repeat are driving the entire body of the season while overtly making the straight pairing a secondary parallel to the primary Dean and Castiel pairing by 15.09 such as the AU scene, or the ending where they mimicked the same phrase, truncated by physicality. But anyone viewing this text is an adult not competing for their preferred fandom playbox to be considered in the text, and had eyeballs, saw Sam and Eileen were clearly courting, flirting, and/or romantically engaged for a long time before this.”

Can we hope for the equality in that, sure. I want that, sure. That doesn’t erase all the other modes of text before that though.

But there, I just addressed 4 consecutive seasons of storytelling as its stands in the critical themes, without breaking down the dozens of independent scenes themselves that have already been analyzed to death and yall have scorched in your eyeballs by now like angels have prophet names.

I’ve seen people desperately, desperately try to reinterpret this text, or this story structure, in inconsistent ways that fall short. They’re never held accountable for their entire shit falling flat on their face, they just keep building new shit that falls on its face too and keep using it as a base. People can *interpret* ~text~ however they want. Anyone that tells you that “true text is inarguable” is either an idiot or selling you something for your subscription to their blog. Anyone CAN make any jackass interpretation of anything they want.

So sure. You can make some nonsensical explanation around every core theme their relationship is shadowed by, removing all social codes and context from basic elements understood by adult human beings natively, whatever. You can take 200 pages writing around it and degaying it. Generally when I see this, I see unhinged, incomplete writings with no central thread, just a thousand disembodied excuses that don’t even make a story. They’re just that. Desperate excuses. Years of it at this point. And they’re free to /interpret the text like that/ if they want. But that’s their /interpretation/ of a /text/ and as-above generally in /intentional, willful, conscious denial and erasure of the basic social codes we all understand./

Just because they /can/ warp the most left field interpretation doesn’t make it not text. If I pulled an “I don’t know I can’t english suddenly” and threw those codes out the window that doesn’t mean that the shit doesn’t mean the shit it means just because it’s inconvenient to me lmao

And this isn’t necessarily at you, Nonnie, I just feel the need to expand on this because any single time I don’t nail down these conversational stakes, someone breezes through and intentionally hotboxes the conversation to go down these very predictable manipulations and extremizations of the conversation that I really am far too tired to repeat the arguments raging in my mentions again, so I head ‘em off before the shit ever reblogs.

my day yesterday was okay, i've just been relaxing, and studying occasionally. went out to explore a nearby town too, it's so pretty there. and much colder (since it's a highlands) of course!! 1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or a blue pen?

blue actually! but idk why

2. Would you prefer to live in the country or in the city?

the country ideally, bc cities are just too noisy, too grey, too many people. but on the other hand, ppl in the country are boring af... so. guess i could live anywhere where i had some peace and quiet and nature on the one hand, and some interesting ppl on the other - one can dream ig, lol

3. If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?

any skill would be nice X’D but i guess writing, always. and not being a procrastinator. just being able to focus and actually finish/achieve smth. would be great (if that’s even a “skill”)

4. do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar?

coffee sometimes (aka when it’s bad coffee lol); tea never (tho i’d put in honey sometimes)

gosh i have no idea. i remember liking most books by Marc De Bel and Patrick Lagrou (both Flemish writers) and then as a teenager ig it had to be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!

i like both, but maybe baths, which have that additional element of “i’ve got time to relax rn” which is always great

not really actually. if it needs to be cold i’d rather just have it chilled than have ice in it

not working for anyone else another day in my life. except if i found something i really want to get behind and put some effort in. hopefully write for pleasure tho, which would hopefully come easier since i wouldn’t be stressed at all times. i’d like to live near the ocean and the jungle, surrounded by a only few but likeminded people ♥

35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean?

love ♥ the ocean, tho i also scares me lol. would say a natural pool or a lake without too many weeds in it :’)

oh yes! i always make a wish :) and the same one each time too

that they’re okay, that of course growth is important, but that they’re enough as they are, and only have to change if they want it, not for anyone else. i’d try to teach them empathy and respect for all beings and the earth we live on

39. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it?

got three already, but i’m contemplating George Harrison’s squiggly sun drawing from his Here Comes the Sun manuscript, maybe on my ankle? still considering Tolkien’s dragon drawing too. an ॐ somewhere definitely, maybe combined with some lotus thing, idk yet..

Jungle Moon Men

The title of this movie is a fucking trick. There are no moon men at all, just a tribe who worship a moon goddess who will die if she goes out in the sun, like the albino Sumerians from The Mole People. Deeply disappointing. It was produced by Sam Katzman, who made an enormous number of incredibly bad movies including Teen-Age Crime Wave, and features Myron Healey from The Incredible Melting Man. There’s also quite a lot of material that is very unfortunately reminiscent of Jungle Goddess. I already know I’m going to hate this movie, but I’m watching it anyway because I have a blog.

Our Hero, Johnny Weismuller, and his buddy Kimba the Chimp are hired by adventurous archaeologist Ellen Marsten to take her deep into the jungle, or at least the Spahn Ranch, on a quest for an ancient civilization who worshipped the sun god Ra. Instead, they find a tribe of little people who are ruled by a moon goddess called Oma, the last survivor of an ancient civilization who were swallowed by the Earth after Ra became angry that they’d discovered the secret of eternal life. Nobody is allowed to leave the lost city of Baku, but Johnny and Marsten have to get out somehow, or they’ll be fed to the sacred lions. Maybe they can take some of those diamonds from the temple with them when they go.

Not only are there no moon men in this movie, there’s not even any jungle. Most of the movie was shot in the open scrubland of Corriganville, California, without even an attempt to make it look jungle-ish. The people making the movie knew this, too, because all their animal stock footage is of the savannah. I think the ‘Jungle Trading Post’ building that appears in the background of one shot is actually a zoo gift shop. I can’t entirely blame the film-makers for this, since it’s clear that their budget did not remotely extend to going anywhere jungle-ish, but they didn’t even try. They couldn’t shoot in the woods? They couldn’t even hang a couple of vines?

There are definitely no black people in this movie, except for maybe some of the stock footage when you really can’t see anybody’s face well enough to tell. All the ‘Africans’ are played by white guys who aren’t even wearing any makeup. The Aribi people, whose chief Nolimo wants revenge on Oma for the death of his son Maro, are a bunch of guys in culturally insensitive costumes which, were it not for the leopard print, could have equally well allowed them to be background ‘Indians’ in some terrible budget Western. They even talk in the same forced broken English. The Moon Men are a bunch of short people in shitty Ewok cosplay.

There’s some Egyptian-type iconography in the city of Baku. A lot of it looks like the kind of thing you’d get if you asked a bunch of sixth-graders to paint something Egyptian without looking at any references. They weren’t even talented sixth-graders. Most of the ‘hieroglyphics’ are just squiggly lines, and everything Marsten says about ancient Egypt is transparently, infuriatingly wrong. She talks about a ‘white civilization’ that flourished there long ago, and how the Egyptians had lost wisdom that would tell us why there are different races and why there are tall people and short people. I’m truly shocked she never mentioned aliens.

The actual story is surprisingly engaging at points. Jungle Moon Men is not a long movie, only sixty-five minutes including the credits, but there’s quite a bit going on in it. Aribi chief Nolimo is seeking his revenge, although he gets entirely forgotten about for most of the movie because even fake black people aren’t allowed to do anything in these movies. An unscrupulous guy named Santo wants to steal the moon men’s diamonds. Marsten keeps finding ‘archaeology’ and spouting off ‘ancient legends.’ When it actually gets going, Jungle Moon Men steams along quite nicely and makes us want to know what happens next.

Yet the movie still manages to spend an awful lot of time dallying around doing nothing. There is, for example, the whole opening sequence – first a narrating voice drones on about the Law of the Jungle over a selection of animal stock footage in an attempt to establish that, despite all evidence to the contrary, this story is set in Africa. Then we get a useless sequence in which Kimba the Chimp is fishing, and Johnny swims down to tug on his line just to tease him. Kimba’s supposedly humourous antics fill up quite a bit of the movie, and they’re almost always irrelevant except at the climax, when he sneaks in and unties everybody before the Moon Men’s pet lions can eat them. He’s also badly-dubbed, with loud chimp noises playing over scenes in which Kimba’s mouth isn’t even open.

There’s an extended funeral sequence for Maro, which does nothing at all except show us a bunch of embarrassed extras in skeletal makeup bouncing in a circle. The worst thing in the movie, however, is the part where Marsten and her friend Prentiss go hunting with bows and arrows, ultimately killing two pigs and an out-of-place puma… and I’m not entirely sure but it looks like these three animals were actually killed, just for this movie! The scene establishes that they’re good shots but that wasn’t necessary because shooting things with arrows is never important to the plot. This movie killed three animals for no reason.

The Moon Men themselves, such as they are, are at once supposed to be threatening bad guys and objects of fun. Their mastery of poisons and accuracy with their blow darts makes them sinister enough, but their costumes are absurd and other scenes show them struggling to open the door to the lion cage, or the useless bit where one of them tries to steal a jeep but cannot control it and just drives it into a ditch. Sometimes the punch line is lol, they’re short! and sometimes it’s lol, they’re stupid primitives! and either way it’s obnoxious and offensive. The only joke that works is when they sneak into the tall people’s camp disguised as shrubs, which is funny mostly because of the better movies it reminds me of.

There is kind of a theme to the movie, though – it’s about where information comes from, and what biases people bring to it. First there’s the fate of Maro. In the mind of his father he was kidnapped and murdered, while the Moon Men say he was chosen by the goddess herself for the great honour of being Oma’s high priest, and had to be punished for his senseless betrayal. Marsten and Prentiss are friends but tell very different stories about how romantic that friendship might be. When Oma catches Santo and Johnny fighting, with stolen diamonds all around them, each blames the other until she gets tired of the whole thing and throws them both to the lions. Oma tells her guests that the Moon Men love her and serve her willingly, but after her death they celebrate because they are no longer slaves.

Oma herself is a pretty blonde woman, much like Greta from Jungle Goddess, but she really is some kind of immortal being who holds herself up as a goddess, rather than being a lost heiress whom the natives just assume was divine because she was paler than them. I guess that’s better… maybe… the movie still holds whiteness up as being nearer to godliness. She’s also fully dressed, though her white gown looks nothing like the Ewok costumes the Moon Men wear, and is never treated as a sex object. There is no implication that her high priest is expected to sleep with her, and neither Prentiss nor Johnny fall in love with her, or she with them. That’s definitely an improvement. There is, furthermore, one really nice moment when she demonstrates that she’s way more afraid of the sunshine than she is of the lions – the latter are just cats, while the former is the incarnation of a god who has sworn to punish her.

Ellen Marsten is never a sex object, either. She spends the whole movie fully clothed and is never in any peril that the men aren’t in with her. Everything she says is stupid but within the world of the film she’s clearly supposed to be an expert in her field. Prentiss is in love with her but respects her enough to remain friends despite the fact that she doesn’t return his feelings, and at the end of the movie Marsten herself is not ‘with’ either him or Johnny. She is a character, not a love interest, so that’s refreshing, too.

None of that’s enough to save the movie, though. It’s a cheap, shoddy, racist train wreck with a side of animal cruelty. It’s also a ripoff, having stolen a lot of its major plot points from H. Rider Haggard’s She. I could talk about that in more detail, but I haven’t actually read She, only seen other movies based on it, and I honestly don’t care. I don’t hate Jungle Moon Men as much as I did Jungle Goddess or Black Dragons, but it’s pretty damned bad.

Despite all this variety, every neural net contains the same two common building blocks: There's a part that's linear, which is usually code for "things work out nicely." [image: linear graph illustration] Then there's a part that's nonlinear, which often means "lol good luck trying to prove anything." The linear part is that synthesis step. In a neural net, there are a bunch of nodes (or neurons) that are connected by edges with different weights. [image: multiple equations being merged together with arrows being pointed at a blue dot that is generating the solution] Each node adds up the input from all its neighbors, multiplied by the weight of the edges connecting them, to get a number representing its state.

The nonlinear part is the decision step. Based on the number from the linear step, the node decides: Blips? No blips?? [image: confused blue dot with thought bubbles including blip or no blip]

Here's a cool thing: For as scary and annoying as nonlinearities can be, the ones that seem to work best for neural nets are all... pretty nice. A Simple Nonlinearity" with a dot and a nonlinear graph] Neural nets have crushed the competition in tons of machine learning challenges, yet the basic rules for their nodes are simple and clean. It's the fact that they're combined into networks that give rise to the bogglingly good performance.

What do these networks look like? There are input neurons, that ingest inputs. Like the third pixel from the right and five down in an image. [image: cat picture with pixels that have arrows pointing at input neurons] There are output neurons, that give outputs. There might be ten of these if you're trying to classify the digits 0 through 9, or a LOT more if you're trying to identify the content of an image. There are typically many more neurons in between the inputs and outputs, organized into layers. [image: network graph] They talk to their neighbors by alternating between simple linear steps and (still pretty simple) nonlinear steps.

Before training, the outputs from the output layer will be nonsense. [image: neural dots outputting scribbled musical notes] They won't match the data the same way a song played on a randomly tuned piano won't sound anything like what it's supposed to.

Training the network is like tuning that piano. [image: neural dots pointing to a musical note that gradually becomes more defined] Just like you'd tighten or loosen strings in a piano to make a song sound right, you increase or decrease the edge weights in a neural net to match its outputs to the data you're training on.

There are a lot of flavors of neural net right now, and we don't really know which approaches are going to win in the long-run. [image: network graphs with legs running towards the finish line of a race] In fact, there's a lot we don't know about why neural nets work... at all...

We're learning that convolutional layers are good for exploiting the spatial structure of images. I got three asks for zeddison so I’m just gonna use the most recent ask to answer. That was a super quick reply time guys lol. Shout-outs to anon and fist-it-out for also requesting zeddison. :D

Who said “I love you” first:

Addison’s the first one to say it in zombie-tongue, a bubbly gar-garziga after they bring Seabrook’s first taste of change with their number in the cheerleading competition; but Zed’s the first one to say it in plain English a little under a month later. All they’re doing is watching a movie in Addison’s living room when it slips out, and if the TV was turned up any louder she might’ve missed it, but she doesn’t and instead turns to Zed with the happiest smile he’s ever seen.

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background:

Zed. He snaps photos of Addison all the time - she’s never paying attention - and if he’s being honest his photo albums mostly consist of pictures of Addison, Zoey and selfies. (Hey, he’s one handsome zombie.) Addison would have a picture of her boyfriend as her phone background if there wasn’t already a group picture of all six of them there instead.

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror: Neither of them can really be bothered to leave ‘notes’ on the bathroom mirror but anytime Zed fogs up the mirror and knows Addison’s going in after him, he does draw outlines of funny-looking glasses or squiggly mustaches that line up almost perfectly with her face when she looks into the mirror and never can she do anything other than smile and laugh.

Who buys the other cheesy gifts:Addison realizes early on in their relationship that Zed feels like he has to make up for being a zombie, so he buys her gifts more frequently than he should. Most of the time they’re cheesy gag-gifts but she’s not blind to way he always shifts on his feet when he hands them over to her or the way he half-smiles and ducks his head when she says that he didn’t have to do that because in his mind he does.

Who initiated the first kiss:Addison. Zed’s freaking out one day and he’s unable to calm down - almost on the verge of a panic attack - and seeing him freak out makes her freak out and the only thing she can think of is to kiss him and so she does by reaching over, grabbing his face and pressing their lips together.

Who kisses the other awake in the morning:Zed’s hates mornings. He wasn’t kidding when he said he was from the darker side because if it’s not dark out he’s not awake. He’s a literal night-owl. Addison’s up by seven most the time and on weekends she can sleep in until nine if she’s goes to bed late, but the early bird gets the worm and her parents drilled that into her head ever since she was a toddler. But Addison’s figured out that if she rolls over and greets Zed with a kiss, it doesn’t matter what time it is, he always kisses back.

Who starts tickle fights:One of Zed’s favorite past-times is tickle-attacking Addison and he loves to do it when she’s in an enclosed space that she can’t escape from, like her closet. When she’s trying to pick out her clothes for the day she’s only focused on that and nothing else and that’s when Zed makes his move.

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower:To Zed’s utter surprise it’s Addison who always asks him if he’d like to join her from behind the shower curtain, and man he knew his girl was bold but he didn’t think she was that bold - he thought that would be his mantle - but he doesn’t put that much thought into it because for one, he’s not complaining, and two, he could never tell her no.

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch:Addison always shows up to Zed’s work on Friday afternoons with a variety of foods ranging from his favorite type of cauliflower to a calzone with extra cheese. He always greets her with a, “Why hello Gorgeous,” and she always replies with a passionate kiss.

Who was nervous and shy on the first date:They were both a bundle of nerves, possibly Zed more than Addison because they were going to go to a movie and for a long walk in the park, her with him a zombie for crying out loud, and Addison’s more on the shy side and quiet from the start of the date to the end of the movie and it’s only then that Zed’s palms stop sweating and Addison stops questioning ever word that comes out of her mouth as they both gush about how amazing the movie was and what their favorite parts were. By the time the date reaches it’s end, they don’t want the night to end.

Who kills/takes out the spiders:Zed might be a scary zombie to some people but if those people heard the way he screams whenever he even sees a spider, they’d be changing their tune. He’s deathly afraid of spiders, enough so that he can’t even kill the little ones, so Addison always has to come to his rescue. (And no, neither of them takes out the spiders. They deserve to die those eight-legged menaces.)

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk:They don’t go out for a drink too much but when they do it’s Zed unable to stop himself from saying how much he loves his girl. Even if it’s nearing one in the morning as they hobble back to their shared apartment, Addison clinging to his arm to make sure he doesn’t suddenly tumble and fall, Zed’s the one shouting at the top of his lungs gar-garziga and girl you look delicious, oh I mean gorgeous along with lyrics from Bamm and Fired Up, to their neighbors’ tremendous annoyance but no one ever calls the patrol on the two because it doesn’t happen often and no one wants to be the one to interrupt true love at it’s finest.

That was actually super fun to think out and write. Sorry for the long-ish responses for each? I like the little details. If anyone follows any other fandoms I write for, I’d also be open to doing something for those as well!

Heaven’s Feel: “Quick” Review and Thoughts

Okay! I’m finally getting this done! There’s going to be SPOILERS down below so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t seen the movie or read the vns

So, I broke this review down into four parts. Things I Wish They Added But I Get That They Had Limited Time, Things I’m Glad They Added, Things I Wish They Kept Out, and Things I’m Glad They Kept Out. I’m also gonna include some personal theater experience and general thoughts about the movie.

Alright! Here we go!

Things I Wish They Added But I Get That They Had Limited Time:

-Okay, one of the major things that I wish they had time for was that one scene in the vn where Rin tells Shinji to come out of hiding (I like to imagine him appearing from behind a curtain) and SHE JUST DRAGS HIM. Seriously, that was one of the highlights for me in the vn and I wish I could’ve seen it on the big screen.

-They didn’t have the rider master reveal yet??? I think they’re doing it in the next movie though

-I’M SO DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY KEPT OUT ARCHER MENTIONING THE GUARDIAN THING LIKE C’MON. However, I do appreciate his alternative line, so that’s going in the Things I’m Glad They Added.

-Okay, I’m not sure if this was an English translation thing or not, but I didn’t get to hear Kirei say “want some”. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but minor disappointed there. (If any of y’all understand Japanese, let me know if this was a thing or not)

-I wish Kirei walked in circles around Shirou when he was info-dumping. That would’ve been Great™

-Okay I felt like the berserker vs saber scene went by waaaaaay too fast. Especially since it was immediately after Shirou talking to Kirei and I was like “okay I guess we’re doing this now”. I get the limited time thing, but even just a few more sword clashing would have been nice. However, they did show all the necessary parts in that scene, so I guess it’s okay in the end.

-The dialogue in the assassin vs. saber scene and the dialogue in the scene where assassin and Zouken talk about their contrasting/similar views were great in the vn, and I wish we got more of that. However, their few exchanges got down to the point, so it was fine in the end. But this is why we read the vns, friends. You get more of that sweet sweet dialogue

-I wish we got to see more of that exchange between Shirou and Mitsuzuri, but again, time

-OKAY WHAT WAS WITH THAT SCENE WHERE SHIROU DROPS OFF SAKURA AND FIRST MEETS ZOUKEN. In the vn, Zouken was like “Ah, yes. What a bummer that you do not know the Einzbern’s. Well, goodnight, young chap!” but in the movie, he was like hmmm......*long awkward silence*.....*backs up into the dark*. Like??? what was that????

-I LEGIT THOUGHT THEY WERE GONNA LET SHIROU PUNCH SHINJI. He was marching his way over and I legit held my breath because I thought we would get to see the Evil Boy punched again in HD. Disappointed we didn’t see that, but I get why it was left out. (but also, #LetShirouPunchShinji2k17)

-Um??? Where were my Saber and Sakura moments??? It was much more in depth in the vns and I was upset that we didn’t really get that in the movie.

-They left out saber locking in Shirou to protect him before she fights assassin. Instead, it was Zouken’s doing. I felt like that could’ve been important to character but they left it out. Kinda bummed

Things I’m Glad They Added:

-I think it was really awesome that we finally got to see the whole Archery Incident in an anime adaption and we even got to see more of Shirou’s and Shinji’s past of being friends, making the whole “my friend’s sister” and the Betrayal even more of an impact. I’m super happy we got that important exposition

-THAT HOSPITAL SCENE WITH ISSEI. His grief was always implied, because of course who wouldn’t be depressed/traumatized, but seeing it on screen,,, it broke me.

-I’m really happy that we got to see the moment where caster and assassin meet. We didn’t get that much detail in the vn, it was just implied, so seeing it was really heartbreaking and Great. Also, if they left it out, it wouldn’t make any sense probably so

-THAT FREAKING SCENE WITH KIREI. YOU KNOW THE ONE

-Okay, back to the archer scene where he should have mentioned being a guardian: although I’m disappointed that they didn’t include that, the alternative “With everything going on, I guess I’ll have to put my personal business aside” HAD ME IN TEARS

-cu finally got the fighting scene he deserved!!! I’m so proud of my husband!!! and BOY was that an EXCELLENT fight scene. 10000/10. What a turn on

-I’m really happy they showed scenes of Shirou trying to make everyone happy and smiling even though it hurts. My boy,,,,,

-Gil chilling out in the church pews while Kirei helps Shirou was Iconic. Especially when he bugged Shirou even though they had not met yet

-Sakura subconsciously tugging at her bow, bless

-I’m so happy they made a huge emphasis of Shirou’s PTSD by showing his nightmares and him nearly throwing up a few times. I feel like Shirou’s trauma has slowly been more spotlighted throughout each anime adaption and I’m glad they’ve finally gotten to a more realistic viewing of his PTSD

-Rin threatening Shirou and then him flying at her feet, asking her to help him and her being speechless was,,, so,,,,amazing

-I might be remembering this totally wrong but...was saber,,,, wearing Kiritsugu’s old kimono???

-THE SNOW

-I thought the ending was very fitting. Even though it wasn’t in the vn, the Dark Squiggly Boy appearing before Shirou, Illya mentioning that she was going to go shopping, and Assassin and Zouken talking about ideals was a great way to end I think.

Things I Wish They Kept Out:

-The boob grab. It was WAY less smuttier than the actual vn scene, but,,,,,, the e cup joke is still enough for me lol

-I think...that’s it

Things I’m Glad They Kept Out:

-Again, super happy we didn’t get That One Dream Scene and all the boners Shirou and Sakura have for each other. I just don’t need that in my life lol

-They kept out a lot of info dumping and the same scenes you get in UBW, which was smart

Personal Experience/Conclusion:

Just watching the movie itself,,,It was AMAZING. I can't describe how happy I was throughout the whole movie. When it first started, it was like all my worries, troubles, and anxieties were all gone. I was just so enveloped in it that I forgot who I was. I was on cloud 9, it was amazing. And during movies, I'll usually snap out of it and think about other things but NO. Heaven's Feel had my undivided attention to the very end, I was so hyperfocused on it. Analyzing, comparing it to the vn, thinking about characters, it was like the only thing in the world was me and that movie. And even when I got home, I couldn't stop smiling. It had it's problems, for sure, but I was just so,,,,, genuinely happy. I just laid down for a few hours replaying the movie in my head until I fell asleep. I wish I could feel that way all the time, I was such on a high. But of course, this is coming from someone who has sold their soul to Fate. If I were a casual fan, it probably wouldn’t have been that awesome. The movie was meant for those who have read the vns and/or watched the other anime adaptions. It was extremely choppy, face paced, and there was a lot of info dumping. Even if you’ve only seen UBW and Zero, it probably wouldn’t have been enough. Having the vns as a background made it a million times more enjoyable. As a set up movie, it was great. As a movie in general, not so good. But heck, maybe it’s just worth it to just watch the fight scenes haha they WERE SO GOOD.

In conclusion, it was a really good movie if you’ve got fate background, the fighting scenes are my sexuality, and there was only a few things I wish they added but they weren’t completely necessary. All in all, it was pretty good with some issues

Oh man I NEVER EVEN KNEW about ‘overshooting’! you dont even notice it in the game but wow that explains why the skullgirls attack animations seem to hit a lot harder than most fighting games. Like seriously, just a split second of one fist going cartoonishly big at the end and then snapping back to normal. Its amazing that its the snapback that does it, not even the exaggeration! It can be such a small size increase, or even just a darkened outline or a move continuing forward further than the actual moment of impact. Like a lil slide after they come back down, but before they jump back into the default position. SO FASCINATING!!! And there was a really cool example from street fighter of a character’s sleeve poofing up when they punch, and then flowing back down, to give the same impression!

And how going off model is necessary for good animation! Silly looking smears are completely fine as long as it leads to a fluid animation. She literally calls it ‘breaking the body’, and encourages you to abandon anatomy for the biggest impact keyframe. “You don’t have to make every frame look perfect, you’re creating one piece of movement, not individual pieces of art.”

Its really interesting to hear how they like.. do animation as the last stage. Well, they do the animation but they dont.. complete drawing it? They make a playable build using their storyboard sketches, and then later their lineart animation, and etc. And they playtest it each time and send notes back on anything that looks wrong while in motion, so they can catch it early and save a lot of wasted work. Thats such a simple yet effective ay to do it! I can’t believe i never thought of it!

Also i really admire that miss cartwright says she’s very nervous giving the presentation, and generally has a very personable honest friendly attitude. I mean, you can tell she’s just a normal person and she may be good at animation but that doesnt mean she could do this presentation effortlessly. It seems like she put a LOT of work into practising for this, and it really paid off! None of this stuff would be so fascinating if it wasnt delivered so well in a really accessable sort of teaching style!

Holding frames at different intervals can make a huge difference, wow! She does say how its super important to work within your hardware and to your boss’s specifications though, some games arent lucky enough to actually be able to have variable framerates. But WOW, Skullgirls looks so much better with it! She showed an example of one of cerebella’s moves, and how it doesn’t read very well at all when every frame goes by at equal speed. It just looks like.. well, if you wave a ruler back and forth? It looks like one wiggly squiggly arch rather than emphasizing what actual movement is happening. When stuff is that fast, you need to remember that the human eye isnt gonna take in the detail of every single frame, so you need to slow down or otherwise emphasize the bits that’re important to the move. Plus also, having an equal framerate means that smear frames can be too SLOW, and be more easily visible, thus breaking immersion! So in the final version the smears run faster than the rest, and the frames at the start and end are slowed down. (when she’s raring up for the attack, and once her fist actually clenches and grabs the foe)

Again, I had NO CLUE that ‘hitstop’ was even a thing! The technical term for the sort of ‘slow motion after the impact’ thing. Its not usually as extreme as it is in the end of boss battles in Kingdom Hearts, for example, usually its more like just two miliseconds of the enemy staying in their downed pose before falling to the ground and bouncing back up. Again, its about speedup and slowdown to emphasize impact! If you just leave the game’s programming as-is and don’t bother to account for this, you have characters recovering from the hit too fast and it doesnt even look like it hurt. I think this is probably related to the concept of ‘mercy invincibility’, too? Thats kinda a way to give the PLAYER a moment to react to the attack!

Another really interesting tip- the reason why games snap back to the idle animation! She says its actually very bad to animate in-betweens of a character returning to their idle pose, snapping back is way better. It doesnt interrupt the idle, and you don’t have to think about animating a return pose that fits equally well with every different attack. plus it slows down combat cos the player cant immediately attack as soon as they’re back on their feet. overly long recovery animations can lead to a character thats disproportionally weak to getting stunlocked! Plus it just gives a sense of speed and badassery to a fighter who can flow so seamlessly back into the action.

I also like that she talked about the things she wasn’t happy with in her work, and used them as teaching examples. That takes a lot of self confidence to be able to talk about! I’ve gotta agree with her, that less frames is snappier sometimes. Its not always about looking the most artistic, in a videogame stuff has to be speedy enough to match with the limits of the action. And I loved the bit where she showed how completely 100% even frame amounts can make stuff have less impact, how removing just one frame from the fist buildup made a punch attack so much better looking!

A funny anecdote: apparantly they went a bit overboard with the first attempt at jiggle physics. They had the problem of too many frames in an idle animation, ENTIRELY because of the boobs! So lol, its nice to know they put the effort into making everything look more realistic and actiony, even the silly fanservice bits.

(Half an ask already. Ugh, I'm hopeless, and you extremely polite.) I'd seen Fitz said Deke's the worst to be their grandson, but not that he persisted! GO, FITZ!! Didn't Iain use to say back in S1 that he didn't want FS to happen? I loved him for it, esp when Liz can't seem to do anything other than wax (1/9)

poetic about FS. (Whyyy, Liz?? Seriously, does she talk about anything other than FS?) LBR though, Fitz is #relatable here. I’ve watched 3 S5 eps and seen many spoilers, and Deke’s 95% a dick, right?? I think TPTB might’ve been going for that particular FS brand of determined, unapologetic, do-what’s-necessary but their compassion and drive to protect were always evident even in their “harsher/colder” actions/attitudes/treatments. (I’m missing the right words but you know, right??) /But/ (2/9)

that she didn’t consciously choose, it was forced on her through guilt of her own and of others’ making, and through others pushing for it, and she’s sort of accepted it, it’s just part of her life now, vaguely, automatically placed under the “good stuff” category, and everything around her is in chaos, so she just fights for /it/? I don’t know. There’s a difference between “the universe says we’re gonna be together, look at the signs!!” and “we want to be together and we’ll work for it”. (4/9)

About the logic fail, Jemma probs grabbed onto that “my mom told me the ‘right direction’ thing which her mom had told her”, ergo she raised her some, and coupled with the need to make Fitz feel better and the talk with yet another always unhelpful team member (😒), she just went for that stupid line. In the AOS house, we perform surgery while conversing on things that test our ability to hold back tears and shouts and shaking and violence, because we’re hardcore. I’m so glad Ward didn’t attend Hydra’s School for Young Octopi!! I mean, everything does point to that!! :D Teen!Ward busted out at 17 and dumped in the woods, switching to Brett!Ward still in the woods, John alluding to Ward shooting Buddy and finally leaving the woods as the end of his training and immediate beginning of his SHIELD career… If he attended any Academy, that was SHIELD Ops. It’s canon! New Ward backstory! I LOVE IT!! OK, because Hydra has that elitist vibe, I’m imagining (7/9)

You know, like the actual Piggate scandal with the UK PM, and there’s many a movie too that show secret societies inside colleges etc, whose members are wealthy kids of old families, and their fathers were members before them, and their grandfathers, and they have weird, twisted rituals. Okay! Here we go! XD

First off, I…..go back and forth on Liz’s support of fs. On the one hand, it’s silly to hold it against her; it’s not like attacking her own storyline would be a smart move, either with fans (who for some reason overwhelmingly support it) or with Jed&Mo (who, after all, have made clear that they based fs’ relationship off their own). Sure, Iain got away with it, but look at the way the show treats Fitz vs. Jemma……he’s clearly the favorite. *side eyes aos* Plus, fs being together gets her more scenes with more people (gotta have everyone reminding her how destined~ she and Fitz are after all!!), so it’s understandable she’d like it.

That said….HOW CAN SHE NOT SEE HOW TERRIBLE IT IS? I DON’T UNDERSTAND.

And we could talk about that all day so…moving on!

Deke started out as the harsh/cold/doing what’s necessary to survive in a terrible environment character (he SOLD DAISY TO KASIUS because he was afraid her search for Jemma would endanger the rest of them), but the show kind of….dropped that? And tried to switch him to the lovable moron instead? It’s weird.

As for Jemma’s optimism……I guess I can’t totally blame her. Like, she does love Fitz, that’s clear enough. I personally don’t think she’d have gotten there if she hadn’t been constantly pushed towards him, or if he hadn’t made a big deal of “I can’t be just friends,” therefore forcing her to choose between a romantic relationship with her best friend or NOTHING AT ALL of him, but. Whatever.

My point was, she loves him. And he is CONSTANTLY going on about how they’re cursed and they’re never gonna work out and how ‘doesn’t sound great for the girlfriend’ and ‘I don’t deserve you’ and blah blah negativity. And it is just super not fair to her that she has to forever fight this attitude of his and try to keep him positive about THEIR RELATIONSHIP, something he should be excited and positive about ON HIS OWN. Ugh.

So from that perspective, I guess I can see why she’d cling to this, as evidence~ they’re not doomed and they’re gonna be okay. Good point, nonnie!

And another good point: I’d forgotten about the daughter saying that her mom had said the steps in the right direction stuff! to her That makes Jemma’s logic fail a little less egregious, I feel better now.

Oh, right, silly me. Of course aos is way too hardcore to want to focus on the situation at hand when surgery is underway!

I think the show kinda confirmed that it was Grant who shot Buddy? In 2x21 when Bobbi was trying to talk Kara out of the whole….torture thing that was about to happen, she tried to convince her that Grant was grooming her and that he probably started small and probably was started small himself, and Kara was like “yeah, Garrett made him shoot his dog.” So that probably counts as confirmation.

(But I am all about #denial so I choose to ignore it. Alternate explanation: Garrett was the one who did it but Grant wanted to use the story to connect to Kara, so he was creative with the truth. See? It still works!)

And yep! Garrett said, when he finally got Grant from the woods, that he’d gotten him into the ops academy! Which admittedly was four whole seasons before this mess and probably they didn’t know yet they were gonna give Hydra its own Academy, but why would Garrett make Grant do the dog test in the woods if he was about to go to Hydra and have to do it all over again? Doesn’t make sense! So yes, definitely Grant went to SHIELD Academy.

As for the “posh” sense you get of Hydra, nonnie, you are SO NOT WRONG. Hydra’s Academy was seriously SO prep school vibes, I can’t even fully describe it. They had UNIFORMS, nonnie! Suit and tie uniforms with HYDRA LOGOS on the breast pocket!!!! It was…….ridiculous. Ri. di. cu. lous.

And right? TOTALLY NOT COOL that Ruby cut off Elena’s arms, but I have some sympathy for her now. Some.

And thank you for asking, the strawberry shortcake was DELICIOUS! And it’s not discrimination (XD; I literally lol’d, nonnie, thanks for that)—strawberry shortcake is a dessert with sliced, sugared strawberries, whipped cream, and a kind of cake that’s called “shortcake” because of its crumbly, sometimes crispy texture. It is THE BEST and I’m so sad it doesn’t exist in your life. I’m sorry, nonnie.

ETA: sometimes people use spongecake instead of shortcake when making strawberry shortcake. these people are wrong and should not be trusted.

As for the squiggly line, it’s hard to explain!

Sometimes, I use it to add a note of sarcasm or mocking. Since tone is hard to convey online, it helps me get my meaning across (and feels necessarily mean, in such statements as “Jemma and Fitz are destined~”)!

Other times, it’s more…..hm…..like a gesture, maybe? Like in my rant I wrote “the glory of Hive~” and the sguiggly was meant to convey a kind of handwave, like “the glory of Hive and all that stuff the Hive-worshiping parts of Hydra would concern themselves with.” Does that make sense?

I don’t know, it’s kind of like the tumblr habit of randomly capitalizing words in the middle of a sentence, you know? Sometimes it’s for emphasis, sometimes it’s for sarcasm, sometimes it’s just because it feels right. I hope that makes at least a little sense. XD
