Going on a journey with some beauties. I’ve been reinking dice again lately after a couple years of Not Doing That, and have been happily acquiring new pound of dice friends that I completely overlooked before but with a fresh coat of paint are now snazzy and going in the collection (more on that later probably). This, though, is a long-held wish of mine I finally acted on, thanks to the information that Chessex is (I think?) retiring the Gemini Astral Blue set. My local Barnes and Noble had some that I passed on just a week before finding this out, so I absolutely and obnoxiously drove there and went in right at opening to snag a set. And a set of its sister, Black Starlight. They’re beauties in the nude. The Starlight set I’m going to ink in purple. I have no idea what I’m going to do for the Astral set (once the other three pieces finish soaking and giving up the rest of that eye-catching but ultimately unwanted red). Any thoughts?

(And to let potential future dice customizers know: I soak my dice in LA’s Totally Awesome cleaner from Dollar Tree. My bottle is a couple of years old now, but it’s safe to use on dice in my experience and absolutely takes the paint off. Unless you’re a pearlescent purple generic set that has somehow fused permanently with its garish gold inking despite literal months in a bath of this stuff, followed by as gentle a scraping with a metal pick as could be managed without damaging the dice.)

Burnt out

#initially this was meant to be something else entirely #but i wasn't really liking how it was going so I scrapped the idea and opted out for something a bit more personal #ive been really suffering from burn out for the last few years and just barely keeping my head above water #there are times where i seriously feel like ive failed in every aspect of my career #like if i were good enough i wouldn't have burnt out #i love my job and i love my trade i love every skill ive gain up until this point #but its been hard not to take it personally when all the effort you've put into honing those skills #are abused or exploited #life is difficult enough already and and time is fleeting #taking time for yourself is above all the most important thing you can do to help your work flourish #taking a break isn't failure #its health #we aren't machines despite our industries treating us as such #just waiting and hoping that itll pay off #ive certainly learned my lesson #and im looking forward to brighter horizons #and healthier more respectful ones #ill be okay ive learned how to love my art in my personal time again #but i certainly need to let my mind rest and my body to recover #these tags are lengthy anyways #unionize and dont work for nothing from large companies #be gay do drugs love your friends make art for yourself too #my art #scuttles out of here #i hope these long ass images actually show up in full resolution #i did draw them fucking TOLL as hell

i feel like im not making any sense but does anyone else feel like there are stories that let u run with them and ones that spell everything out for you

#im reading that post that says artists are directors of audience reaction and not its dictator:#'you cannot guarantee that everyone viewing your work will react as you are trying t make them react. a good artist knows that this is what #allows work to breath. by definition you cannot have art where the viewer brings nothing to the table ... this is why you have to let go of #the urge to plainly state in text exactly how you think the work should be interpreted ... its better to be misinterpreted sometimes than #to talk down to your audience. you wont even gain any control that way; people will still develop their opinions no matter what you do #im thinking abt this again cuz i was thinking maybe the thing that lets adventure time work so well the way it does is cuz it doesnt #take itself too seriously that it gives the audience enough room to fuck with subtext and then fuck with them back yknow. i think it was #mentioned somewhere that they werent even planning to run with the postapocalyptic elements that are hinted in the show but changed their #mind after the one off with the frozen businessmen and dominoed into marcy and simons backstory. on the other side there are stories that #explain too much to let the story speak for itself and i think it ends up having to do more with the crew trying to lead ppl in a certain #direction than expand on what they have and i see a lot of this with miraculous. like when interviews and tweets are used as word of god in #arguments and it becomes a little stifling to play around with it knowing the creator can just interject. u can say its the crews effort to #engage with its audience but it feels more like micromanaging. and none of this is to say there ISNT room for stories that spell things out #theyre just suited for different things. if sesame street tried abstract approaches to themes and nuance itd be counterproductive #a lot of things fly over my head so i need help picking things apart to get it- but it doesnt have to be from the story itself. ive picked #picked up or built on my own interpretations listening to other ppl share their thoughts which creates conversation around the same thing #sometimes stories will spell things out for you without being so obvious abt it that it feels like its woven into the text. my fav example #for this might be ATLA using younger characters as its main cast but instead of feeling like its dumbed down for kids to understand why war #is bad its framed from a childs point of view so younger audiences can pick up on it by relating to the characters. maybe an 8 year old #wont get how geopolitics works but at least they get 'hey the world is a little more complicated than everyone vs. fire nation'. same for #steven universe bc its like theyre trying to describe and put feelings into words that kids might not have so they have smth to start with #especially with the metaphors around relationships bc even if it looks unfamiliar as a kid now maybe the hope is for it to be smth you can #look back to. thats why it feels like these shows grew up with me.. instead of saving difficult topics for 'when im ready for it'#as if its preparing me for high school it gave me smth to turn in my hands and revisit again and again as i grow. stories that never #treated u as dumb all along. just someone who could learn and come back to it as many times as u need to. i loved SU for the longest time #but i felt guilty for enjoying it hearing the way ppl bash it. bc i was a kid and thought other ppl understood it better than me and made #feel bad for leaning into the message of paying forward kindness and not questioning why steven didnt punish the diamonds or hold them #accountable. but im rewatching it now and going oh. i still love this show and what it was trying to teach me #yapping #diary

I've been working on actually making stuff to post more often for the lower tiers, and have been consistently doing so!

I post at least a few sketches and drawings every month for the $1 and up patrons

and I've been working on episodes and sharing some updates with my $5 and up patrons

And I have a merch club for $15 a month, but there's still some $10 slots left! I design and send usually a postcard and some stickers to my patrons every month, but sometimes I'll do some experimental stuff; last month I did foil prints, for instance, and a few months before I made magnets!

It also gets you access to private channels in my discord server, where I ask for patron input on things like the merch or drawings, and where I sometimes stream while working :)

Buuuut also, even if you don't want any of this stuff, it's a great way to support me directly if you like my work! I'm still on hiatus so I'm not making any money from work at the moment, but I'm working hard and my patreon enables me at least to buy my groceries!

Eddie diaz dealing with his mommy issues arc in season 8 is feeling realer to me than ever right now

#Helena diaz is responsible for so much of Eddie’s issues #she is a massive part of the reason Shannon left the first time #the way she spoke at ramons retirement party just reenforced things #she is the matriarch and rules with an iron will #it is ultimately down fo her that Eddie was forced to grow up too fast - was forced into a heteronormative behaviour pattern #she is the reason he didn’t get to figure out who he really is and that’s what he’s paying for now #Ramon just went along with her - that has been shown on multiple occasions - he is like Phillip buckley - a weak man who goes along with his #wife for a quiet life #so yeah - Helena (and Ramon) showing up in 7x10 - perhaps to take Chris back to Texas for the summer #feels very intentional to me - Eddie dealt with his issues around one parent - now in order to let go of Shannon and move forward he needs #to deal with the other #gonna be so good #it’s also worth pointing out that we see a far more soft and vulnerable Eddie with abuela and Pepa than with Helena - perhaps the contrast #will be explored - Helena not liking abuela or Pepa that much because she thinks they make him soft etc - would be juicy too #(can you tell I’m not a Helena diaz fan!!)#911 spoilers #eddie diaz #911 speculation #911 abc

I can't even talk about how bad it got without having to add goddamn content warnings to my post. But now all that is just...over. It ended. And now I'm happy and at peace EVERY DAY, and working on things that felt literally impossible this time last year.

This episode basically delivered on everything it built up with Liko and Amethio so far and more, I'm really looking forward to their future development.. It's been so satisfying to watch.

#i didn't want to be presomptuous about things but in the end most of what i speculated about and wrote about came up and was relevant etc #i'm not sure what to add at this point w i love hz for rewarding the viewer for picking up on things.. it feels loving in its handling #what if liko fails her test and what if amethio is the only one who can offer her words of encouragement in this situation #what if liko talks about stuff she won't bring up with roy and dot and what if she reaffirms her desire to be stronger after talking to ame #and what if amethio grusha parallels. and what if something something grandparents legacies. and what if they talk with no ill will #and what if they are going through similar steps on purpose. and what if he calls her by name.#and what if there was another thank you (liko thanked soublades for the fire etc)#it's just so satisfying. paying attention and seeing this buildup from day one. and seeing it unfold over time and picking up on the themes #it's a gentle payoff. just like their conversation. that really displayed what's appealing about both characters.#i'm just really satisified and will be looking forward to more.#good story and good characters #liko and amethio #hz065 #character notes #episode notes

Every bookbinding tutorial i found online: "DO NOT TRY THE COPTIC STITCH AS A BEGINNER ITS TOO ADVANCED"

Me who has only bound one book before and used a completely different method: "ehh it can't be that hard"

2 hours later

.....I was right. Its not that hard.

#its technically slightly wrong cuz i dont have signatures #im just doing one folded piece of paper at a time #which does take longer #but i was expecting that #doing actual signatures would have a. been way too thick cuz im using watercolor paper and getting them to lay flat wouldve been annoying #and also i wouldve had to pay a lot more attention to how the pages were actually laid out #and this project was already kinda overwhelming without that added in #im also combining methods a bit cuz im also gonna glue the spine with wood glue for extra support #and i also dont want the stitching to be visible #every tutorial was also like ''coptic stitch is great for exposed stitching!!!'' like cool story. not why im using it. gonna cover that shit #also finding one that wasnt in video form AND actually showed everything i needed to know was completely impossible apparently #i needed to know how to attach a fresh string when i run out cuz i always struggle with that in any sewing project #and generally need a refresher each time #and all the written ones were just like ''just make sure your string is long enough before hand!!! but not so much that it becomes #tangled!!!'' bitch im making a much thicker book than you. i cannot just use ONE string. it b #absolutely WILL become tangled if i make it long enough to finish the binding in one go.#yall are WEAK #my book is 3 times thicker than yours #i need to know how to attach a fresh string #the video tutorials cover that but i had to fast forward through most of it #im running out of steam for tonight (hence why im here and not working on it) so ill be finishing this tomorrow #was hoping to get this part done over the weekend but i ended up not getting a lot of the writing done on friday as i intended #cuz i ended up having to play tech support for my friend so she could update her sims mods

i feel like i’ve been WAITING for the other shoe to drop wrt people’s opinions about watcher for this very reason. not that i think the reaction is completely not understandable but the greater the parasocial relationship, the greater the fallout as soon as public opinion shifts. you don’t have a relationship with these people they’re just content creators, chill

#ready to see all the people coming out of the woodwork to say how they’ve never liked watcher/unsolved/etc #and act like it’s ‘cringe’ now that their fanbase feels ‘betrayed’#it’s great to have a fanbase but parasocial relationships will bite you in the ass every single time #it’s interesting too though because i’ve seen watcher have a LOT of support as they’ve tried to build something separate from buzzfeed #so this is the first time they’re getting real pushback about a decision they’ve made wrt shifting their platform/expanding their brand #so ig we’ll have to see how they react moving forward #but it’s soooo interesting to see how enthusiastically people dump on buzzfeed #AND how many people dump on youtube and how over the years so much of its functionality has been stripped away #how many ads you have to sit through. how much sponsored content there is now. etc #but when they try to do the same thing with youtube that they did with buzzfeed it’s like how dare you not lick their boots #because if you lick their boots and we lick their boots we can watch stuff for free #anyway.#even if you don’t any to say it’s a bad business decision. it’s not like there’s not precedent for it #1) the move away from buzzfeed was successful and 2) what about the dnd shows or whatever #don’t you guys watch those dnd shows that are ‘behind a paywall’#don’t you guys have netflix hulu disney hbo amazon etc ad nauseum that are actually owned by billion dollar corporations #don’t you guys get on your high horses about supporting independent artists all the time #it’s interesting that people will profess to be such big fans!!! and feel like they’re friends!!!!#but how dare they think their work might be worth paying for #idk. idk. it’s entitlement though #sorry for the rant i’m ALSO not trying to blindly defend a bunch of people i don’t know #but you guys are being soooo fucking annoying about it lol #anyway i’m still waiting to see what their response is going to be from here before jumping to conclusions #also to be fair i am biased to be lenient about decisions made by independent filmmakers vs big studios etc #like everybody freaking out about the ai art used in late night with the devil. who cares honestly #‘they should’ve paid a real artist!!’ idk maybe their budget didn’t cover that #i don’t want it to become the industry norm but at the end of the day i would rather see indie shit getting made then only seeing #the big studios (who don’t have equitable practices anyway!!) making shit #but that’s another conversation. just to be transparent about my viewpoint on this kind of thing #maybe controversial but also can’t we have nuance. for once.

#also I pay in my mental stability #hi its jasmine #photo stuff #.......I was looking forward to never using that tag again #I went to my counselors the whole last year begginggggg to be cut from photography #sat with them and watched while they planned my next schedule #I didn't even request it and most importantly......u *cannot* request this class the art teachers hand pick the students they liked best #there's a whole application process that I didn't bother with bc the photography teacher and I hate each other's guts #he was giving the ppl who applied such a hard time too. ik he was extra picky bc last year *was* his last year. he's retired now #yknow what probably happened.....bet he was too picky and didn't select enough students to constitute a class so I just got placed there

Have been reading this sci-fi romance and like UGH u ever really wish a book was just at least a little better??? There's stuff in this that's interesting but also a lot about it that's so... Juvenile and kinda undercooked lol...... But it's so hard finding good romance bc for a lot of romance readers this is enough, except even then not really since they prolly didn't fuck nasty enough in this book for the ppl that just need the merest pretense to read smut (which is fine if that's what u like there's just an oversaturation of this, esp when you can have a light plot/heavy smut story with slightly better writing and internal world building without having to explain and describe the 'boring' parts 😅)

#i have another romance series i like and return to and i feel like i couch it so much when i say its good actually #but my recent attempts to get back into reading and find a good romance this last year has kinda shown me #i was taking the quality of writing in that series for GRANTED #this series which has more smut than the book I'm reading but has very compelling world building evocative writing interesting cast #meanwhile the author I'm reading might as well just say I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE WRITING THIS at points of the book and worse #they're upfront that this aesthetic in this book is inspired by a game and it's clear #they're taking for granted u know the aesthetic and barely describe anything #which is kind of a problem in contemporary romance a lot but there's times when the writer clearly has a vision and just doesn't communicate #anyway this is for no one I'm just right about to finish it after hoping every chapter it would be better #text posts #the thing is too i have played this game they're referencing and it's got nothing to do with the game except the setting/environment #but if i hadn't played that game i wonder how well i could picture it #they also didn't name another game that I'm pretty sure they took inspiration from #i know it's hard when you want to write a character that's smarter than you but over and over it's like why make her have a skillset #if you clearly aren't willing to do any of the bare minimum to make it seem like she actually has the skills or knows anything 😔#the forward on this book is literally like A/N: I didn't want to research anything for this book so i didn't #and since i said so you can't judge me!!!#yes i can.... it's only by the grace of the fact I'm reading this on a borrowed ku account and didn't pay for it that I'm not harsher lol
