Guide to a Fantastic Time!

Hello everyone! Thank you for coming, I hope we have a grand old time. First things first, this is a 18+ Rp area, so I hope you please respect that we should do just fine. Rps do not need to go down that route, I am 100% down for SFW rps, but I mainly prefer NSFW. Just pointing that out now. Also I will absolutely will not do anything with anyone under age, characters or people.

I actually love to play as many characters as I can from different fandoms, or OCs that I have sorta made up and never really put them to pen and paper. Digiweek2022 [1/6]

Day 1: First Day (Beginning)

→ Tell us about a character; a character you love, a character you created.

The year is 2010, summer had just ended and a bored Takuya walked down the streets of his new home… in Rome, Italy. It had been ages since his adventure in the Digital World with other five misfits who had become very decent people and formed a bond with him.

But, those days as some fighting hero of justice had passed and he’s pretty much an ordinary university student. He said he won’t give details about his private life, or whatever he meant by that.

His day had only begun.

Takuya yawned as he had to wake up early for his soccer team training when he accidentally got hit by a weird pink plush in the head. After swearing something, he glanced at the plush.

“What the…!? Why would someone throw this teddy bear-thing at me!?”

“Ugh!” the teddy bear-thing wiggled in front of him, trying to get up from the floor.

“It’s… It’s alive!? Is it a new toy!?”

“Ack!” The toy is a bun with long ears, pink and with big green eyes. She heard the boy and looked back at him “A toy!? I’m not a toy! I’m a digimon!!”

Silence between the two.

“Ah,” Takuya just blinks “A digimon… Ok then, be careful next ti-- WAIT WHAT DID YOU SAY!?”

Sometimes Kanbara Takuya can be a little… stupid. (a little?!)

“I’m a digimon!” She repeated, “What, you never saw one before?”

“Yeah I did but…” he sighed, and next used an annoying voice tone, “Bokomon said digimon can’t come to the human world.”

“And that Bokomon never said why?”

“Nope! But you’re right here in front of me so I guess I’m still at home sleeping and got this weird drea-- OUCH!” the bun hit his leg with her long ears, “WHY DID YOU DO THAT!?”

“It’s not a dream!!”

“FINE! THIS IS NOT A DREAM!” he growled, “What do you want!?”

“I want you to find someone for me.”

“Someone? Can’t you-- Nevermind, that would’ve been a big bad idea.”

“Please help me!”

“Sorry I can’t, I have soccer practice right now and… I have to go now or I will be late!!”

Takuya walked past the bun digimon and left. But you think you can just walk away like if this whole conversation never had happened?!

The bun digimon pouted, and then…

A gate opens under Takuya’s feet.

When villainesses take the lead

We are the generation that grew up watching shows such as Digimon, Inuyasha and The Vision of Escaflowne. There is something attractive about works that involve journeys to other worlds with fantastical settings and exciting adventures. Let’s say, you have your normal fantastical plot: a common person falls into another world. There, they may develop or discover the possession of magical powers, live lots of magical occurrences and even may end up finding love! Magic Knight Rayearth, SAO and Zero no Tsukaima come to my mind, among others.

What’s so interesting about this type of fictional works? We receive the chance to explore themes of our interest, fulfil personal fantasies and escape from our common lives (the real world is already complicated on its own). This article shows how Escapism has its value.

There is a very interesting paradigm going on on Asiatic media concerning travels to other worlds. In fact, according to TV Tropes, this type of fictional work is called Isekai in Japanese media and it’s treated as a genre of its own. And yet, nowadays I find a very interesting twist in this type of media, a twist that makes things very entertaining.

The names of the works I’m talking about sound cliché and melodramatic: ‘My Next Live as a Villainess’, ‘Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess’, ‘The Villainess Lives Twice’, ‘The Villainess reverses the hourglass’. Others are more indirect, such as ‘The Abandoned Empress’ and ‘Your Throne’. Most are told from the point of view of females who have a traditional antagonist role.

I’ve always enjoyed ironic consumption, and these titles worked as magnets to me. What I ended up finding was a refreshing surprise: common women who fell into fantastical worlds made from the plots of novels and games they consumed in their free time, or more traditional ‘villainesses’ who travelled back in time to fix what was wrong in their first lives. In the first case, we would see normal girls who found themselves inside the bodies of ‘villainous’ characters and desperately trying to avoid their bad endings by the use of their knowledge of the plots while commenting on clichés and traditional tropes. In the second case, we see female characters who more or less identify with their ‘villainous’ role and try to change their bad outcomes while learning about themselves and what drove them to make their bad choices.

What do these types of works have in common? They are genre deconstructions. According to TV Tropes, deconstructions happen when a fictional work takes its elements apart and shows how certain elements would work in real life, by contrasting them to ‘real situations’ or parodying them. Sarcastic main characters help, too.

There is a very interesting trend among Asian Media (mainly works made by Korean authors, but there are Japanese too) concerning the deconstruction of traditional stories directed to the female public.

Why is this expression of the isekai genre so interesting?

First, because most stories deal with settings of historical fantasy, where we can indulge ourselves with beautiful Period dresses, gorgeous mansions and attractive love interests. One can’t help but remember the works of Jane Austen or the Brontë Sisters.

Second, because the twists of these works feel refreshing. We consider other points of view. We see why villains become what they become. We get to learn new plot points. Deconstructions give an interesting dose of realism and pragmatism to stories. They are refreshing because they give new angles to an old genre and we can identify with the situations.

But let’s not forget: the focus of this essay is villainesses. We get to see the story from the point of view of female characters who don’t portray themselves as good people and some even feel content with their roles.

Raised in a world where women receive lots of double standards, being pressured from young ages to be proper and good and yet receiving worse punishments than guys for doing the same things like them as a result of unrealistic expectations, along with some unhealthy extremes of social justice culture, where we are oddly pressured to change ourselves and learn from our mistakes yet we are not allowed to fully grow from them, it isn’t hard to identify with villainesses. After all, it is unavoidable to find ourselves as the villains of someone else’s life events. We are not perfect people and we fuck up sometimes. Especially when we are young.

So, why are villainesses so interesting? Because they fuck up, too. These characters don’t try to be saintly good girls and they acknowledge their situations. There is an interesting dose of cynicism underlying these works, in some, it’s more open than in others, such as ‘Your Throne’. Some female leads are noble demons who try to not drag third parties into their schemes, like Medea Belial in the work I previously mentioned. Others define themselves as villainess yet behave as anti-heroines are their worst, such as Aria Roscente in ‘The Villaines Reverses the Hourglass’. And others are heroes who still place themselves in the roles of villains, like Catarina Claes in ‘My Next Life as a Villainess!’’.

What do these three have in common? The leads also have internalized in themselves some moral standards about good and evil.

I don’t think it is surprising to find these types of works during the current fourth wave of Feminism we are living in. Terms such as internalized misogyny, double standards and deconstruction are concepts I learned these past years thanks to social media. So, why do I believe these types of Isekai novels that focus on villainesses are so relevant? Because we see other females’ points of view, we understand their positions and sometimes get to see that the true villains are other characters. Most of the villainesses of these works are, in fact, women with terrible social reputations who behave as anti-heroines at their worst.

There is a reason why the social settings of these stories are during past times. The authors of these works are deconstructing tropes from both old and new media. They are giving voices to Other Characters and show them in a realistic light, they write about flawed women who try to survive in a world full of unrealistic expectations, and that is true for both past and actual times.

It isn't hard for me to recall works such as Northanger Abbey or Jane Eyre. There are reasons why Period novels are still relevant these days, but that it’s not the topic I want to address in this essay. Here is this interesting article that analyses the success of Jane Austen works, while this note from the Guardian does the same for the Brontë sisters. Of course, experts and critics would get annoyed at me for putting Jane Austen and the Brontë Sisters on the same page, but please, bear with me: I’m talking about fictional works that deal with abuse, machismo, dysfunctional families and difficult childhoods, subjects still relevant to today. So, what’s so interesting about recalling these themes? It’s the way some Asian authors knew how to retake these stories, added some fantastical elements and still deconstructed others, providing us with a refreshing result.

Most of the isekai works I mentioned above are told from the point of view of young girls who are isolated for their social positions, because they come from other worlds and know that their ‘new bodies’ are doomed to die and more.

Imagine being reincarnated as the pretty daughter of a noble family and yet... you find yourself hated and isolated from others, in a situation you cannot control. And you can be murdered in cold blood if you don’t make the right choices. These works make it very clear some situations are ugly and dangerous. They are not painted in a romantic light. And the main characters acknowledge it.

Naturally, there are aspects we could criticize of these works. For example, the main leads usually are white thin ladies in gorgeous period dresses, who despite their issues still benefit from privileged backgrounds. And few of these works address LGTBQ+ representation, as most of the endgames are attractive male leads.

But then, this is not about pitting people against each other. It’s about acknowledging a new paradigm in story-telling, one that subverts and parodies plots.

Change is brought over by small steps. And I think we are going on a good path.

Digimon Data Squad Dub Comparison Episode 30 - Journey to the Sacred City

This is a companion to my commentary on the original Japanese Digimon Savers! Reading my commentary on the original version of this episode (which you can find here) is recommended before reading this dub comparison.

Recap BanchoLeomon: “…they were seeking clues for the whereabouts of Marcus’s father. But what they found was me, BanchoLeomon.”

Heh. BanchoLeomon is doing the recap today, for a nice change of pace.

Titling this episode Journey to the Sacred City is a little misleading, because most of said journey happened offscreen in between episodes; they get there within the first two minutes.

Marcus: “Are you sure we’re going the right way, Nerdstein?”

Ughhhhh. Why is Marcus still doing this. Why did Marcus ever start doing this, after the point that he and Thomas became friends. I guess it fits slightly better in this particular context where he’s clearly frustrated from having been walking for ages, but I am still irritated by this general idea of Marcus Hates Nerds™ in the first place. His dad is a scientist.

Masaru:  “A banchou never lies!”

Marcus: “BanchoLeomon never lies!”

Because the dub refused to properly localise the concept of a “bancho” by explaining what it means, this line had to be changed. It reads as a lot weirder that Marcus is so sure that this specific person they’ve only briefly met would definitely never lie, as opposed to Masaru being sure that a specific kind of person, of which BanchouLeomon is one, wouldn’t lie.

Tohma:  “Then what? Are you saying that I’m wrong?”

Thomas: “Hey, what are you implying? That *I’m* leading us the wrong way?”

Okay, Thomas’s dub line actually gives a better reason why he might get annoyed at Marcus here. Implying simply that Tohma’s wrong didn’t mean anything, because they were going off BanchouLeomon’s information and not Tohma’s anyway, but an implication that Thomas is deliberately leading them wrong despite knowing the right way makes sense for him to get annoyed at.

Thomas: “You’re the one who started it with your attitude!”

In this case I kind of agree with Thomas – not because of the BanchoLeomon-never-lies thing, but because of the Nerdstein comment. Did you know, Marcus is more of a jerk.

After everyone expresses their amazement at ElDradimon in turn, Gaomon rounds it out with a short little “Whoa” that sounds… really tongue-in-cheek somehow? The delivery doesn’t fit him.

Baronmon has what sounds like a very bad stereotypical Mexican accent, and I say that as someone with little familiarity with that accent at all. Feels rather unnecessary, especially given that he had no particular accent as far as I could tell in Japanese.

Baromon:  “We have a warm reception waiting for you in the palace. Now, come along. Come this way.”

Masaru:  “Hey, thanks!”

Baronmon:  “We will have a huge party celebrating your arrival here. Please, come.”

Marcus: “Awright, party time!”

???? Why does Marcus care so much about partying. In the original he was eager about being welcomed in, sure, but the dub makes it seem like he’s only so excited because he’s being promised a party. Marcus shouldn’t be the kind of person who cares about parties in particular!

Masaru:  “What are you doing? Hurry it up, Tohma!”

Marcus: “Come on, slowpokes! You’re holdin’ up the whole party!”

Still all about that party, for some reason.

Tohma:  “You know, you’re a real character.”

Masaru:  “It’s gotta be a big feast!”

Agumon:  “I wonder if they have Sayuri’s fried eggs!”

Masaru:  “No way, it won’t be Mom’s cooking!”

Thomas: “You know, Marcus, you’re somethin’ else.”

Marcus: “Whatever, party pooper.”

Marcus & Agumon: [singing] “Every party has a pooper, that’s why we invited you~!”

Marcus just really wants to party, you guys, and I am so bewildered that this is suddenly a thing. Why.

Like, Masaru being excited about the prospect of food makes sense. If Marcus likes parties and is enthusiastic about Baronmon offering one, it should only really be because of the food. But this very much seems like it’s not only about the food and is generally about the whole party itself and I just. Do not get it.

(This also makes Marcus come across as even more gullible. Baromon offering “a warm reception” makes some amount of sense for the situation. But Baronmon offering “a huge party”, and then Marcus immediately going “whoo, party!!!” makes it feel like he was duped by something about as subtle as a carrot hanging from a stick, because he just can’t resist parties for some reason.)

The Convenient Glare on Kurata’s tanks was not enough for the dub’s censorship standards; they’ve edited them to add in a layer of completely opaque bubbles coming up high enough to cover up all the necessary parts.

Kurata:  “I have a theory that could work.”

Kurata: “Hmm… perhaps I *can* make you stronger. I mean after all, I was able to do it once before…”

Kurata’s phrasing in the dub as he broaches this topic reads a lot more like him subtly stroking his own ego about it, and I approve.

Kurata: “…when I combined your human DNA with Digimon DNA…”

Uhh. Digimon don’t have DNA? Not even in the Digimon Natural AabiLity sense of DNA, because that’s still a thing that comes from humans. Digimon are made out of data.

The very next line of him talking about this then has him refer to “Digimon data” like he should, so I have no idea why that mistake is even there.

Ivan:  “I’m honestly quite worried about it…”

Ivan: “Not me. Too risky.”

Ivan actually expresses a lack of willingness to go through with it entirely, rather than just being worried. (Except he thinks he doesn’t because terrible character quirk, but.)

Kurata:  “Well then, everyone. Since I have your consent, we will proceed.”

Kurata: “Well, then. I’ll just pretend Kouki speaks for all of you.”

Originally Kurata acted as if he totally had everyone’s consent, whereas dub-Kurata is being more open about ignoring everyone except Kouki. I guess the dub wanted to highlight him going against their wishes more, with this and Ivan’s more explicit refusal. Either way it’s still totally something Kurata would do, so.

The red liquid that covers them is completely opaque, because of the need to censor the nakedness. It also appears to put them to sleep after a little bit of pained groaning, in stark contrast to the original version, in which they were screaming and thrashing in agony the whole time. The dub still could have kept the screaming part at least, but I guess they decided that was too brutal?

Kurata:  “The strongest warriors who can battle on equal ground with the Ultimate level.”

Kurata: “Strong enough to exact your revenge on Marcus Damon… Spencer Damon’s son.”

I much prefer the dub line here! It makes perfect sense that Kurata would twist this into being about Spencer, given his resentment towards the guy. This is some actual interesting nuanced Kurata characterisation in place of the original’s relatively flavourless gloating. The dub is continuing to somewhat-consistently do a really good job with its Kurata localisation (not always, they’ve dropped the ball a bunch of times, but still decently often), and I am still impressed.

Marcus: “Some party!”

Marcus is so mad he didn’t get to party you guys

Tohma:  “This is a reception? Who do they think they’re kidding?”

Thomas: “Next time I say no, listen to me.”

Thomas is making this about calling out Marcus for not listening, instead of effectively berating himself for falling for the obvious trap. I mean, in this case I guess it’d makes sense to call Marcus in particular out for being suckered by the obviously fake party what the heck, but he’s not even making it about that.

Masaru:  “Damn it, you guys better remember this!”

Marcus: “Heeey! Stooop! Heeeey!! Stoooop!!”

As he gets carried off, Masaru’s protests are still indignant and implicitly threatening in nature, but Marcus sounds… like he’s beginning to get kind of desperate? Not sure that’s in character for him.

Marcus: “Agumon?!”

Marcus’s tone of voice as he’s in the execution arena and sees Agumon sitting near Baromon makes it seem like he feels betrayed, as if he thinks Agumon’s actually joined the citizens’ side in watching him be executed. Dude, do you not see the ropes still tying him to the others? Do you not have more faith in your partner than that?

Baromon:  “As of this moment, we will now commence the humans’ execution!”

Baronmon: “Digimon! It is time for the humans to pay for their crimes!”

Of course the dub doesn’t want to come out and outright call it an execution if they can help it. I guess it’s still pretty clear that that’s what Baronmon means by it, though.

Tohma:  “They should at least let us call for a lawyer.”

Thomas:  “I would ask for a lawyer, but I don’t think it would do any good.”

Tohma’s comment was always a little weird to me in this context, and Thomas’s version is a better fit for the situation, I think.

Tohma:  “You’re…!”

~~~~~

Thomas:  “So that’s where he went!”

I like the greater sense of Thomas immediately filling in the gaps the moment he sees that Yushima is here. (Though it does kind of imply that he’s been here the whole time, which shouldn’t make sense, because then he should have been executed ages ago.)

Yushima: “How did you three manage to get captured? Oh, brother. Talk about weak.”

Marcus: “You were captured before we were!”

So, Yushima, were you enticed by the prospect of a big party as well? Because that’s really the only reason the trio were captured in this version.

Digimon Analyser Yushima: “His Mad Dog Fire is hotter than a slice of pizza on the roof of your mouth!”

That sure is an appropriate analogy to be making when you’re about to be torn to shreds by said mad dog, definitely.

Baromon:  “Go, Cerberumon! Turn the humans into mincemeat!”

Baronmon: “Now Cerberusmon will punish the humans, Digimon-style!”

Well, I say that, but nobody’s actually going to mention that the intent is to rip them to shreds, of course, because this is the dub.

Baronmon: “Humans that discover the Sacred City cannot be set free. They will *never* be released.”

This is implying that he’s going to keep them imprisoned here, meaning… he’s not actually about to execute them? That what’s about to happen is instead supposed to be some kind of public torture session as punishment, kind of like flogging a criminal in the old days…?

Pumpmon:  “Forget about the humans.”

Pumpkinmon: “Forget the humans. They attacked the Digital World.”

Agumon, Gaomon & Lalamon:  “Huh?”

After this line in the original, the Digimon partners do also turn to Pumpmon with a sort of “Huh?” body language, but it makes sense for them to do so, because being told to just forget about their partners is so preposterous to them. In the dub, because of Pumpkinmon’s added bit about the humans attacking the Digital World, it doesn’t make sense for the Digimon partners to respond with bewilderment – the correct response for them is to go “No, they didn’t!”. They’re already perfectly aware that the citizens have this mistaken assumption; it’s not surprising to hear it again.

Baronmon: “You must join us and turn against these humans for the sake of your own survival. It’s your only chance. Otherwise… suffer the same fate!”

Okay, him making this about their survival and saying they’d otherwise face the same fate as the humans does make this sound like it’s implicitly an execution. Make up your mind, dub.

Thomas: “Yoshino!”

There’s a slight gap between the second and third syllables here such that it almost sounds like Thomas might be saying “Yoshi, no!” except that the intonation on the last syllable isn’t right for that. The unfortunate trials of lip-flap and the coincidences of the English language.

Lalamon:  “Nuts Shoot!”

Agumon: “Pepper Breath!”

The attack that saves Yoshi is fired from offscreen… so the dub decided to change who saved her from Lalamon into Agumon. I guess technically the animation looks more like fire than seeds, but it’s brief enough that it certainly never bothered me while watching the original. I’d much rather have kept Lalamon getting to be the one to save her partner over being technically more visually accurate in a way nobody will actually notice or care about.

Lalamon:  “We escaped, Yoshi!”

Yes, Lalamon, I’m sure Yoshi needed you to tell her that, as if she couldn’t see it with her own eyes.

Tohma:  “Why did you…?”

Gaomon:  “I couldn’t abandon you.”

Thomas: “Why’d you risk yourself for us?”

Gaomon: “Sir, we could never abandon our partners after all we’d been through.”

I had a whole thought in the original episode commentary about how Tohma’s question could be translated as both a “why” or a “how”, thus making it more sensible that Tohma could have meant it as a “how” and Gaomon interpreted it as a “why”. But in English, that’s not workable, so instead Thomas is just asking an odd question. Of course your good dog would risk himself for you, Thomas!

(Though, actually, could it never work in English? I wonder if “how come?” is ambiguous enough that it could be interpreted as both a “how did you escape” and a “why did you want to” in this situation.)

Baronmon:  “In that case, destroy them all!”

Hm, okay, I guess we really are going with the point being death here, because we all know that “destroy” is the dub’s favourite alternative to “kill”, sigh.

Masaru:  “Digisoul Charge—!”

Marcus: “DNA—!”

Masaru delivers his call exactly like he was about to go “Digisoul Charge! Overdrive!” and got cut off before the last word. Meanwhile, Marcus’s intonation sounds very much like he was only about to go “DNA Charge!” or maybe “DNA Full Charge!”, but definitely not the Overdrive one, despite it being the Overdrive animation.

I wonder if the dub writers forgot about the new Overdrive call, since it only became a thing last episode, and so they were confused as to why Masaru was getting cut off despite having sounded like he’d finished the call, hence changing it to remove an extra word in the dub.

Baromon:  “There was no choice but to wait for him to die.”

Baronmon:  “We tried to cool him off, but we knew our beloved capital was about to come crashing down.”

Of course ElDradimon was never in danger of dying, can’t have that. Instead, he was going to “come crashing down”, but… the rest of the citizens would still have been able to live in him like this, right? He’d just have been awkwardly stuck in this one desert forever, still alive and still functioning as a city just fine. This means Spencer’s deed should be a bit less monumental to them, because he didn’t actually save their lives, just their convenience.

Pumpkinmon: “You know what? He looks like Spencer!”

Ehhh? Only a little bit? It’s definitely not Ikuto-and-his-mother levels of family resemblance to the point that even a Digimon – who don’t know how families work – would be able to pick up on. Though I guess we can charitably interpret this as Pumpkinmon backpedalling and going “oh actually yes, it’s definitely very obvious that he’s the son of our hero, I can’t believe we ever considered executing him!” to try and save face now that he realises they’re related thanks to the DNA Charge.

Baromon:  “You guys! Do you dare to harm the son of our hero, the one who saved the Capital?”

Baronmon: “How dare you, trying to punish the son of the hero that saved our Sacred City!”

Pumpkinmon: “Me?!”

Wow, Baronmon, way to immediately turn around and try to pin this on this one Pumpkinmon like it wasn’t all on your orders. Though I guess that could be interpreted as what Baromon was going for originally, and the dub’s just making it more obvious. Not quite how I read it personally; I saw it as more him trying to make sure everyone around him had also thoroughly reconsidered the execution, rather than trying to deflect blame as such.

Baronmon: “Prepare a banquet at once!”

Not a party, apparently, despite the fake promises of one earlier. I guess Marcus is still gonna be really mad that he didn’t get one of those.

Yushima:  “We’re saved…”

Yushima: “Looks like we escaped another one.”

I like the nod to the fact that Yushima and Kamemon have escaped at least one close call beforehand, back in Merukimon’s palace.

Yoshino:  “Masaru! Your father’s amazing!”

Masaru:  “I guess so.”

Yoshi: “Marcus! Your father was… amazing!”

Marcus: “You mean *is*.”

Awww, Marcus with the firm reminder that his dad’s definitely alive and definitely still just as awesome to this day.

(Though it’s interesting that this comes in place of Masaru being kinda low-key about his dad’s awesomeness, which you’d think would be the sort of thing that the dub version of Marcus’s dad complex would actually want to lean more into.)

Baromon:  “Please accept my humblest apologies.”

Masaru:  “As long as you get it.”

Baronmon: “Please accept my apology.”

Marcus: “Just don’t let it happen again.”

Bit of a weird context to be saying that in, Marcus. Yeah, they’re gonna have to be real careful to make sure they don’t try to execute you again.

Yushima: “You don’t have to call me ‘sir’ any more, now that DATS is gone. Yushima.”

Yoshi: “You know about DATS?”

This read to me for a second like Yoshi was questioning how Yushima is connected to DATS at all, as if she hadn’t already been told that… but never mind, it can also work as her asking how he knows that DATS was destroyed, that’s fair. Alas, the limited lip-flap space making that awkwardly ambiguous.

Yushima:  “I’ve heard some rumours floating around.”

Yushima: “I’ve heard some rumours, but I felt they were true.”

Seems a bit defeatist for him to randomly decide that rumours of his organisation being destroyed were definitely true with no proof.

Yushima:  “It appears I’ve caused you quite the painful experience.”

Masaru:  “You’ve got that right!”

Yushima: “Boy, I spend a little time in the Digital World, and my entire organisation falls apart.”

Marcus: “You got that right.”

This is a weird thing for Marcus to be agreeing with. “Yeah, we sure screwed things up in your absence, didn’t we!”. Apparently that’s a result of the dub blindly translating Masaru’s line directly despite having completely changed Yushima’s line that he was responding to.

Yushima:  “I figured we’d need that man’s help to prevent an all-out war between the humans and Digimon.”

Yushima: “I’m sure Spencer figured he would need [King Drasil’s] help if he were ever to prevent an all-out war between the humans and the Digimon.”

This is Japanese’s lack of subjects at work here again, as well as the dubbers not keeping proper track of the story to figure it out from context. It doesn’t make sense that Spencer thought King Drasil was necessary to stop a war between humans and Digimon, because when Spencer first went looking for King Drasil, Kurata’s massacre hadn’t happened and so there was no threat of war on the horizon. What Yushima is obviously meant to be saying here is that he, Yushima, figured Suguru might be able to prevent a war, now, in the present, given that war was looking like a very likely possibility after the conversation with Mercurimon in episode 18.

The word that the subs awkwardly translated as “Messiah” for this episode and will promptly switch to translating as “saviour” for every future episode so let’s pretend it was always that, has instead been translated as “legend” in the dub. That’s a fair substitute.

Agumon:  “Aniki, what’s a ‘saviour’?”

Masaru:  “Um, it’s a…”

Yoshino:  “It means he’s stronger than a banchou.”

Masaru:  “Yeah, that’s it!”

Agumon: “Hey, Boss, what’s that mean anyway? ‘Legend’!”

Marcus:  “Umm… let’s see… I—”

Yoshi:  “It means Marcus’s dad is more famous than he is.”

Marcus: “Yeah. What she said.”

Marcus’s tone of voice in that last line is extremely bitter and resentful, and oh man, they’re really actually leaning into this for his version of the dad complex, aren’t they. It fits his expression perfectly well, but Masaru at least didn’t seem that bothered by it in his tone of voice and may have only been annoyed at Yoshino explaining it before he could.

Agumon:  “He’s stronger than a banchou?! Your dad’s amazing!”

Masaru:  “I guess so!” [he laughs awkwardly]

Agumon: “Even more famous than you, Boss? Gee, I guess that means we’re *all* famous except for you.”

Marcus: “Yeah, right.” [he gives an extremely forced laugh]

I’m really not following Agumon’s logic of concluding that this somehow means everyone is more famous than Marcus. But the dub must have done this on purpose, for the sake of Marcus’s still-extremely-bitter response and even more obviously forced laugh. Yeah, they’re going hard on this. This is an actually deliberate thing.

You’d think, given that it’s extremely easy to pick up from this version of the conversation that Marcus has some kind of resentment about his dad being so awesome, that Thomas wouldn’t be feeling quite so jealous about it – maybe Marcus’s dad is more awesome than his, but Marcus clearly isn’t super happy about things either just like Thomas isn’t. But apparently Thomas hasn’t noticed that, because, despite the dub deliberately changing the nuance of Marcus’s dad complex in a not-necessarily-bad way, they can’t always change everything around it, and not everything is going to fit as well with this new version.

Thomas’s little heart-to-heart with Gaomon gets the heartwarming piano rendition of Probably Marcus’s Theme. It’s cute and fitting for the mood, but the fact that it’s probably Marcus’s theme does hit a bit weird, given that I’m aware of that.

Tohma:  “I was just envious… that he has a father who can be respected so unconditionally.”

Gaomon:  “That’s rare… To hear you being jealous of someone.”

Tohma:  “Jealous? Me?”

Gaomon:  “Master…”

Tohma:  “I see… I’m being jealous…”

Thomas: “Just thinking about Marcus’s dad. Doctor Damon seems to be the kind of man that everyone has great respect for.”

Gaomon:  “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you act jealous about someone else before, sir.”

Thomas: “Me? Jealous of who?”

Gaomon: “Marcus.”

Thomas:  “I guess I would like a dad like his…”

The original conversation here seemed awkward in English, because apparently in Japanese the words for “envious” and “jealous” are dissimilar enough that it must have made sense for Tohma to not connect the two concepts on his own. The dub neatly deals with this by simply having Thomas not mention any kind of envy or jealousy at all while talking about Marcus’s dad, so that it sounds right for Gaomon to point it out and Thomas to be surprised.

The dub also made this slightly less subtle that this is about Thomas’s own dad, but not in an unreasonable way.

Tohma:  “No way! They must have been creating a diversion!”

Thomas:  “We missed one Gizumon-XT!”

This line around the bonus Gizumon-XT attack makes it sound not like the first attack was a deliberate diversion tactic to sneak this one in past their defences, but rather like they were just… careless and missed one, somehow.

ShineGreymon’s dub voice is so incredibly growly, he doesn’t sound like even remotely the same person as Agumon. Just Obligatory Growly Evolved Digimon Voice #2378.

Oh and while I’m here complaining about dub voices, reminder that Falcomon’s is the worst, it took so long for your regular reminder this time because he only appeared late on in the episode.

Marcus: “Keenan, you did an amazing job! The protectors of the Digital World have never been this strong before, thanks to you!”

That’s a little bit of an overstatement. A few hundred Champion-levels is helpful, but not by that much in the grand scheme of things.

Kurata: “Yes, nothing like a good breakfast of Digimon energy to start your day off right.”

That sure is one way for Kurata to be talking to his “pet” in the huge tank. (It is not awake and cannot hear him.)

Nanami:  “It’s not bad.”

Nanami:  “Not bad!”

Nanami’s “not bad” in the dub is a lot more enthusiastic, which loses the nuance I liked in the original that she didn’t seem to care either way about being more powerful.

Kurata:  “According to my predictions, thousands of Digimon should already be assembled at that place.”

Kurata:  “If I’m right about this, there should be thousands of escapee Digimon in their capital seeking refuge.”

Kurata’s point about a lot of Digimon being in the capital because they’re seeking refuge is new to the dub (at least, new being made explicitly), and it’s a worthwhile thing to mention. Baromon’s words about how a lot of the Digimon citizens are so full of grief that they’d never accept humans do hit harder if there are Digimon in the city who’ve personally escaped from their homes being massacred, rather than just hearing about it second-hand.

Overall differences

Eh, nothing’s too majorly off about this one, so let’s go over some of the smaller things.

Marcus just really wanted to party, you guys. Why. What even.

The tank scene with the Bio-Hybrids has a lot more visual censorship of the nudity. Perhaps most notably, this leads to them falling asleep instead of thrashing around in agony as they’re modified, making it less brutal. The dub’s Kurata game is still on fine form in this scene, including a bit I really like where he takes an excuse to lash out at Spencer out of nowhere, nice.

The execution scene is only implicitly an execution, because of course, including one line where it seemed weirdly like it might not be one at all. Agumon is the one who saves Yoshi instead of Lalamon for no real reason, why. And of course, ElDradimon wasn’t going to die in the backstory either, making Spencer’s heroics less of a big deal.

The dub totally gets confused with Yushima’s line about Spencer and makes it sound like Spencer was seeking King Drasil in order to prevent this war, which he wasn’t, because the timing of that doesn’t make sense. That line was meant to be about Yushima looking for Suguru’s help to prevent the war.

It’s only a small hinted thing in this episode, but Marcus’s dad complex continues to be quite deliberately different from Masaru’s, with the way that he seems a lot more pointedly resentful at his dad being so awesomely legendary. (Which is fun, but it does also mean that Thomas’s jealousy of that doesn’t work quite as well.)

Shihanne’s Kizuna meta -- Part 1: The meaning behind Kizuna, and the actual cause of partnership dissolution

Kizuna is a very easy movie to misunderstand, and it’s not helped by the fact that the official translation kind of sucks. (Seriously, I highly recommend you check out the translation of one of the novels -- the Dash X or the Shueisha Mirai version -- because of how badly the official one sucks.) On top of that, a lot of its information is packed in the subtleties of a lot of its lines, which means that, without paying very close attention, you can walk off with a completely misleading interpretation of what the movie is trying to say. A lot of times I see people talking about how the movie’s message is about adulthood sucking, or partnership dissolution being an inevitable thing...when the movie actually makes multiple indications that this is not the case.

(The rest of the post contains major spoilers for the movie, so be warned.)

Do note that the below is only my personal interpretation, and because there is a lot to unpack with this movie, please feel free to disagree with or disregard any of my interpretations here.

Kizuna has a lot of things to say about adulthood, but the most obvious theme is, of course, “don’t be too trapped in nostalgia” -- represented by Menoa’s desire to trap everyone in Neverland so they can never move forward, and, on a meta level, the ridiculous amount of Adventure imagery associated with people who can’t move on (yeah, they weren’t really subtle about that part...). But as a result, the idea behind the movie is often taken the wrong way -- does this mean that they’re trashing on the very series they’re meant to honor? Is the movie about people having to swallow adulthood being painful? After all, the movie says that partners disappear when you become an adult! Isn’t the movie saying we all have to accept that (even though the sheer existence of the 02 epilogue should imply otherwise)?

Nope! The movie actually does have another inner layer about what it means to become an adult, and how to develop a healthy relationship with your adulthood that isn’t just violently cutting everything away -- in fact, it considers that to be another unhealthy extreme that it warns against. It’s just that this theme is a little more latently hidden, and you have to connect the dots a little to figure that out.

I think a lot of the reason so many people miss this is predicated on the fact that you are not supposed to take Menoa’s statement at face value. It’s her statement as presented in the official trailers and a lot of the advertising material, so it’s easy to think that she’s supposed to be the deliverer of the movie’s message, but that is very much not the case! Understanding this is key to understanding the core theme of the movie, and what it’s trying to say in terms of a lead-up to the 02 epilogue.

Menoa’s statement on adulthood, which is what the concept of partnership dissolution is supposedly predicated on, is the following (quoted from onkeikun’s translation of the Dash X Bunko novel, which uses the movie script):

Do all of you know why it’s children who are chosen to be partners with Digimon?... It’s because children are full of possibilities... The future is rife with limitless choices. You grow as a person by making those choices. “Growth” and “possibilities” together produce vast energy. As I’m sure you guys are already aware, the evolutions of your Digimon partners are triggered by your growth... When that power is gone… Your partnership with your Digimon ends.

Keep in mind that Menoa has built this “theory” based on her own experience. She’s convinced that her “choice” to become an adult was what took Morphomon from her. She’s convinced that Adulthood is Bad, and that Choices are Bad. Menoa is very much biased from her own experience, and her theory is not reliable. Seriously, do you think someone who eventually decides that forcing everyone into an eternal loop of their childhood is an excellent idea is a reliable source for these kinds of things?

Not only that, she’s also claiming that this is supposed to apply to all adults just because this happened to her. Although she claims that this is part of her research, there clearly have not been enough cases of partnership dissolution for this to be a well-known issue. Given that she lost Morphomon at a young age, and she’s one of the oldest Chosen Children, it’s natural that she might think that this might be a universal phenomenon and that it might not have “kicked in” for everyone else, but nevertheless, she’s committing a major no-no in scientific research -- extrapolating based on a painfully small sample size, and letting her own biased perception of events manipulate what she sees as the result.

When Gennai supposedly “confirms” the partnership dissolution phenomenon, note that he does not actually confirm Menoa’s theory.

Unfortunately, you are experiencing the case where your partnership is dissolving... But if you guys still have infinite possibility…Then it’s possible…

The fact that Gennai refers to it as a “case” is very important (it’s very clear in the Japanese line too, jirei). This is a thing that may happen. It is not a thing that is guaranteed to happen, and it’s not necessarily a thing that comes with adulthood like Menoa thinks. What’s more, he even acknowledges that “having infinite possibility” is still possible for adults -- something that doesn’t fit with Menoa’s theory on Adulthood Being Bad and how it diminishes possibility.

As the movie eventually goes into Menoa’s plan for “saving” Chosen Children, she justifies her motive by saying that losing partners is “fate” (shukumei). She thinks that losing partners is an inevitability. She thinks that this is just something that comes with adulthood, and that unless she forces everyone to stay in their childhood, their only recourse will be to suck it up and to be miserable.

This is why the climax is dedicated to Taichi and Yamato proving her wrong.

“What you’ve chosen wasn’t a mistake!” “But no matter what waits for us after making that choice…!” “We have to live with the decisions that we make!”... “We might not be able to change our fate. But!” “We can change our destiny!”

In essence, Taichi and Yamato are disproving both parts of Menoa’s theory on Adulthood Being Bad. It’s not that choices are inherently bad, it’s just that sometimes there are consequences of said choices...but it’s not like said consequences lead to dead ends. Taichi and Yamato, in contrast to Menoa’s belief in “fate”, believe in “destiny” (unmei) -- the difference being that they believe in being able to change that predetermined fate by their own efforts.

The concept had come up earlier in To Sora, too --

Hey, Sora-san. I think it was destiny that we became Chosen Children. But I don’t think it was fate.

It’s a completely different conversation, but Mimi is basically talking about the philosophy that pushes the Chosen Children forward -- that sure, some things seem to be predestined and beyond simple luck, but also that they’ve had choice in manipulating the events and changing what seems normally inevitable.

So if Menoa’s theory about partnerships dissolving in adulthood is questionable to begin with, then what does cause partnership dissolution? Again, it’s not actually established that this is something that happens to everyone. We only have four confirmed cases within the scope of the movie: Menoa herself, Taichi, Yamato, and Sora. So what do they have in common?

Well, the night before the ring appeared on Taichi and Yamato’s Digivices, they had this conversation:

“You should take Gabumon with you to your classes,” Taichi said jokingly. Yamato smiled wryly. “Don’t be stupid. Why don’t you take Agumon to your classes?” “It’s not that simple. I have my own life to live.”

And during the events of To Sora -- which presumably happened right before the ring appeared for Sora -- this happened:

When Piyomon had come to inform her that Koushiro had sent a message, Sora had said to her angrily, “Don’t bother me!” The distress and irritation of her practice not going well had caused Sora to take it out on her. But even when lashed out by that irrational anger, Piyomon had been the one who apologized. When she saw Piyomon hanging her head apologetically, Sora had felt a surge of regret but no room in her heart to apologize as well. “I need to focus on this right now…” She had said as her excuse, and looked away.

And in Menoa’s case, a certain something shows up in the Shueisha Mirai Bunko version of the novel -- it’s implied in the movie itself, but the novel itself says it pretty explicitly:

Waiting in front of the swing at her family’s home, where they’d always played together when Menoa was a child, was her beloved friend. Lately, she’d been studying so much that they hadn’t been talking to each other at all, so she wanted Morphomon to lavish her with praise. She wanted her to say, “Menoa, you’re amazing!”

See a pattern? All of the known cases of partnership dissolution involved neglect of their Digimon partners in pursuit of “adulthood”.

Taichi and Yamato ditched Agumon and Gabumon at the start of the movie and left them with their siblings. Agumon hadn’t even been to Taichi’s room before, even though Taichi lives by himself and is clearly lonely -- his reaction when Agumon finds his AVs, “you have to be an adult -- “ tells all, because he clearly thinks of Agumon as “a child” who shouldn’t be near his New Adult Life. Sora may have apologized later, but it sounds like there’s been a constant pattern of her starting to focus so much on her studies that she’s emotionally neglected Piyomon. And, of course, Menoa herself rushed so much to become “an adult” that she neglected her beloved partner in the process -- they weren’t even talking anymore! And the fact that the swing is discussed in past tense, when Menoa was a child, indicates that Morphomon may not be the only thing Menoa had tossed away in pursuit of “becoming an adult”.

(Note how Menoa constantly talked through the movie about the fact she and Morphomon had “always been together”, as if Morphomon had been ripped unfairly from her suddenly and for no reason...only for the revelation that Menoa was guilty of neglect to drop at the end. I repeat: Menoa is not a reliable person to be taking words at face value from.)

It really, really doesn’t seem like coincidence that Taichi and Yamato’s Digivice rings appeared the day after they flippantly laughed at the idea of taking Agumon and Gabumon to school because it would get in the way of “having their own lives to live”. Recall that Digimon in the Adventure universe have always generally been taken to represent an alter ego, or a part of oneself. (They were literally developed to represent part of the human soul in physical form.) On a symbolic level, your partner disappearing is representative of you losing touch with yourself -- and your own childhood innocence -- because of some arbitrary, societally-enforced standard of “becoming an adult”.

Fun side note? As mentioned in the movie, Eosmon is named after the Greek goddess of the dawn, who also has another interesting story about her: she fell in love with a mortal man and, not wanting him to die before her, requested that he be given eternal life, but neglected to ask that he be given eternal youth, and was forced to watch as her lover kept living on and on and withered further and further with age. Neglected the concept of youth, huh.

That’s why partnerships seem to dissolve with adulthood, but it’s not from the simple act of becoming an adult -- it happens when you take that adulthood and decide that you’re going to reject all of those “childish” things about yourself in pursuit of that goal, and lose yourself in the process. And sure, they may have tried to fix it right away, but these things aren’t just momentary moments of weakness; they build, and build, and build, and build, until you’re at the point of no return and need to take drastic measures to get it back.

And in fact, if you inspect the staff interviews (which have been, presumably, deliberately vague about this in the hopes of having the audience figure it out), they hint at it, too:

For this movie, we had the concept of "separation from their Digimon", which means being able to completely separate yourself from your past self, or rather, wondering if it might be better to cut yourself entirely from your past adventures in becoming more like an adult.

Not only that, but this explanation tracks much better than what Menoa claims is the case. Under Menoa’s explanation of choices diminishing possibilities, characters like Daisuke and Jou who had their paths already determined from an early age should have lost their partners a long time ago, and conversely, Taichi and Yamato, who weren’t sure on what to do with their lives at the beginning of the movie, should not have lost their partners. But “emotional neglect from the obsession with growing up” tracks even with our “outlier” cases -- Menoa “forced” herself to become an adult at the very-not-adult age of 14 and lost her partner, while Oikawa also didn’t actually get to “meet” Pipimon until he accepted that exact same thing -- that he needed to embrace the “power to dream” instead of considering himself a “tainted adult”.

(Ichijouji Ken, who could be argued to be guilty of emotional neglect of Wormmon in some sense, initially seems like a violation of this principle, but closely observing the Kaiser’s behavior during 02 indicates an often paradoxical thread of behavior implying that he seemed to have been rejecting and yet wanting him nearby at the same time, which is part of the reason Wormmon’s death breaks him so badly. In fact, it often feels like he goes out of his way to acknowledge Wormmon for the specific purpose of rejecting him. In a metaphorical sense, knowing that Wormmon is representative of Ken’s own inner self, the metaphor of Ken being in perpetual internal conflict of constantly trying to outwardly reject his own heart for being “weak” yet never truly being able to escape it until he’s finally forced to accept it for good is not lost. It was not a positive relationship with Wormmon by any means, but it was, nevertheless, a conscious and active relationship, for which “neglect” does not feel like an appropriate word.)

When you look back at Menoa’s life and backstory, it then becomes clear how she made her mistake in her theory. Menoa basically threw away her childhood in order to become an adult, and she never learned to embrace the happy medium between having an unhealthy attachment to the past and violently cutting it off. Late in the movie, she claims that there’s nobody else who understands how she feels, and we also learn in her flashback that she had an obsession with doing things “on her own”, or in other words, she cut off any potential friends or people who could help her (Morphomon seems to have legitimately been her only friend and confidant). So in her mind, “losing touch with your inner self and having no connection to the happiness of your childhood” is fundamentally synonymous with becoming an adult. That’s how she develops her mentality of “adulthood is drudgery and has no value, and we’d be better off never getting there” -- and that adulthood strips people of possibilities and therefore provides no recourse from losing your Digimon partner, and that the only way to reclaim anything from your childhood is to just shove yourself back into its box. Her own life had no such hope in it, so she projects that lack of hope onto everyone else.

With that in mind, the two major questions that come from this:

Will this happen to everyone? Hard to say, but I don’t think it would necessarily. Remember, even though Menoa is one of the oldest Chosen Children and had this happen to her at an abnormally early age, not everyone has such an unhealthy relationship with adulthood, nor is as likely to neglect their partners nearly as much in the process of figuring out what adulthood means to them. That doesn’t mean that those it does happen to made some “mistake” or “messed up”, though -- press materials and the BD commentary made it clear that this was not a movie intended to endorse “one way to live”, and sometimes the degree of introspection and experimentation with what adulthood means to you does result in momentarily trying to cut things away until you figure your life balance out, especially if you want to take on a challenge with as high of a hurdle as Taichi’s road to becoming a diplomat.

So what’s the solution? Although it’s still left to everyone’s imagination to figure out the details, at the very least, figuring out yourself and snapping yourself out of this very unhealthy relationship with “growing up” and holding yourself to arbitrary, false standards is probably a great start! Menoa had her “vision” of Morphomon the moment Taichi and Yamato’s words reached her within Eosmon. Gennai specifically says that partnership dissolution will cause the Digimon to disappear in terms of losing their “form” (sugata), but given that Digimon in the Adventure universe are supposed to represent a part of yourself, they’re probably still there (just not there)! In that light, getting them back...is probably not actually all that hard, if they can sit down and take some time to figure themselves out. That’s why Menoa never figured it out this whole time in the last eight years; she was so busy focusing on “scientific” ways to get Morphomon back, and staying perpetually stuck in a twisted nostalgic version of her past, that she never actually sat down to think about herself and what she was doing. And that’s why the movie’s climax is about Taichi blowing the whistle to wake everyone up -- it’s still about moving forward, but it’s about using your past to move forward, instead of gravitating to the extremes of either latching onto it eternally or attempting to abandon it outright.

So really, the solution is for everyone to get some damn therapy.

Given that, the path to the 02 epilogue doesn’t actually seem that particularly difficult compared to how Menoa made the problem initially sound like. It’s not like every adult is going to inevitably have this happen as a process, and thus it’s not like everyone has to find some magical technical solution that’ll rectify one of the laws of the universe. The solution is really more somewhere between the unhealthy extremes presented in the movie -- Menoa’s fixation on nostalgia and the past being the only good thing in her life, and Taichi and Yamato (initially) rejecting said childhoods in favor of “adulthood” -- and figuring out how to use and cherish your childhood, past experiences, and inner self to move forward.

And given Sora’s revelation in To Sora about taking care of herself more, and Taichi and Yamato starting to settle on their career decisions for real by the end of Kizuna, they’re already on their way to figuring things out. Or, in other words, it’s likely that they’ll get their partners back simply through the natural course of making their way to the epilogue. Taichi’s starting to value his childhood experiences as important in his future work in diplomacy. Yamato, according to the Shueisha Mirai version of the novel, is becoming an astronaut to entertain the “romantic” dream of going to space with Gabumon. Sora, as per the 02 epilogue, will end up known not for being an iemoto heir but a kimono designer -- a skill that she’s presumably going to be discovering on her own, and not under obligations to others. Gennai himself said that there was hope as long as they still had “infinite possibility” -- something that Taichi, Yamato, and Sora were closing up on themselves at the beginning of this movie, but were starting to re-open the door to again once they started reconnecting with themselves and embarking on some proper paths by the end of it.

“We’ll definitely come to see you” -- indeed, they will.

Aghddkjahdkfkaljddj!!! The best boi, the best oc I love so dearly like! 🥺 Jason “Jaystorm” Grey! He is my own fictional OC that I created sometime in 8th grade I believe? About 2010! So almost 11 years I think!

He has dealt with a lot of my creative mind and just pure high school into college anguish ;;;w;;; my gentle storm hasn’t had the best life, in either Au or actual story he’s in. Legendary Wolf Warrior’s story, he and his later sister where born from an affair situation. While not much suspicion was raised with him, he later had to endure a lot of traumatic events in his life.

First, with his older brother leaving him behind to deal with his alpha father’s (older brother’s biological dad) anger.

Witnessing his actual dad (Jason and Lula’s dad) get murdered in cold blood, right in front of him, believing it was his fault for him trying to run away with his brother.

Become physically and mentally abused by his alpha, who was trying to shape him into something worse under all this abuse.

Witnessing said alpha, murder his mother for supposedly sending away his sister through a river. And because of the affair she had that birthed him and his sister. Who’s fate is unknown to him for a long, long time until they are much older.

And then the aftermath of standing up to alpha’s abuse and fighting back for all the years of torment he was put through. Gaining his powers of the Storm in the process. But Jason, bless him, never wanted to be the one to kill him, he just wanted to leave of his own accord, but this terrible wolf that raised and abused him wanted to fight and kill him for trying to leave.

Because of this, he is often plagued with nightmares and believes he sees him in the far distance for a long while after he travels on his own. The mental and emotional abuse staying with Jason for a long while. Even after when he arrives at the Forest of Dreams, being the last warrior to arrive of the seven that exist.

He has no control of his powers for a long time, sometimes drawing storms with the slightest anger. He had no idea how to fight without almost killing someone else in the process. Jason had so much guilt and fear of losing control of this higher power he possessed, even scared of losing the other warriors because of his lack of strength and skills at them. They, who have had their powers for far longer as younger pups.

But of course he has them too, despite his insecurities and fears, the others help him and show him how to better control such a power, especially at his age. They don’t turn him away as he worried so much, they train him and tell him to control his emotions that cause a major melt down of his powers.

Danielle especially (me in that sense UwU), who understands what it means to let one’s emotions get the best of them, helps him find his balance and most especially helps him talk about his past.

He definitely says it so nonchalantly, never realizing how bad his life was for a long time. Actually believing most alpha’s in wolf packs led with such a tyrannical stance. More than surprised by Dany’s father’s lead and his genuine kindness to others and other animals around the Forest of Dreams. A lot of it is due to the abuse of his own alpha and how his mind was filled with such negative things, especially about himself.

Jason does feel like an outsider most of the time, even more so than some of the other animals/humans who lived similar lives, but especially because of his powers. But he grows from when he first arrived in FoD, he learns to socialize more, how to hunt and give to the forest, how live a life of his own and not be ruled over by past influences. He looks back on his younger self a lot and reflects on how he wished to save that young version of himself from so much.

But he has in a sense, by living on his life and being everything his alpha never was and tried to instill in him. He has a new family, one that is genuine and true and would never leave him despite the terrible things that happened. 🥺🌧

Jason is my best mans, the best boi that deserves the world and much peace. Many think the Storm power for him is kind of odd considering his pretty pacifist nature and gentleness. I think it fits him perfectly anyway 💖🌧 he is pretty similar in Digimon Au, though most of his strength and growth is him and his experiences and also the voice encouragement by his Digimon, Raiwolfmon. Even so, he is still a dear and precious person, nothing like the terrible “father figure” that raised him. He is all his own and so much better.

02 Kids - Crests!

I’ll admit I might not be the best for this type of question, but I will certainly try my best

Okay, so I’ve thought this to myself before, but Davis is so good at staying optimistic--he was the only one completely unaffected by MaloMyotismon in the last-ish episodes of 02, and that was honestly amazing. Therefore, I would bequeath him a Crest along the lines of Optimism. He’s a truly amazing Goggle Boy, and I’m sorry I didn’t realize that when I was 14 (I was mad about Tai’s goggles, to be honest LMAO)

Yolei’s a little harder since there are a lot of different sorts of scenes with her in the series. However, I think something like Passion might fit her, especially considering her drive throughout the series, even when things looked a little bleak. And it’s kind of the perfect mix of Sora and Mimi’s Crests ;)

Cody’s even MORE difficult. It’s really hard to define him, because, like... he’s CODY. He’s so much different than other characters of his basic archetype in the other seasons. I had to do a bit of Googling of words for this one, but I think Cody’s an Integrity sort of kid. Remember the episode when he was struggling with lying to his grandpa about going to the Digital World? Kid’s got a lot of integrity. He’s got real strong morals for someone his age, and honestly, it’s what I love most about him.

I wish I could tell you what these Crests would look like, but best I can conjure up in my mindspace is some convoluted hybrids of the two Digi-Eggs each of ‘em got

02 Digimon - Ultimate Forms (Not DNA Digivolutions)

Hm, okay, so Ankylomon is a giant Ankylosaurus, right? None of the logical evolutions on the Wikimon are good enough, to be honest. SO. I propose a Stegosaurus-like Digimon with some Zudomon-tenacity thrown in. Let’s call him Stegomon. Unless that exists.

Okay, Stegomon exists. I’m not good with names. The work in progress name is now Stegozudomon. I hope that makes sense. XD

This may be a total Goggle Boy move, but honestly? Aero V-dramon (I guess AeroVeedramon in some spellings) would be perfect for ExVeemon.

Honestly, the name similarity sold me on this one. Also because it’s sorta like how Greymon goes to MetalGreymon. *tugs on collar nervously* Hahahahahaha not being lazy

ANYWAY. It appears Aquilamon can Digivolve to Hippogriffomon. That seems to be pretty perfect to me. I’d change the coloration a bit to keep in line with the rest of the evolution chain, but otherwise I like it a lot. I’m not biased towards hippogriffs. I swear. I swear. *voice cracks*

Stingmon... Honestly, I want to take the easy way out and go with BanchoStingmon. But that would be too easy. And honestly none of Wikimon’s other options really suit this.

Okay, so I guess Stingmon’s ultimate would have to be like ULTRA BADASS, sorta like MegaKabuterimon. Perhaps a different beetle like thing, but in a similar family to the beetle MegaKabuterimon was based on? I’m not sure if that makes sense. Basically, a more Hercules beetle-like MegaKabuteri, but with Stingmon’s coloration.

Digimon Adventure 02

Non-epilogue compliant: fics where the epilogue (and now that they exist, Tri and Kizuna) isn't going to happen. Non-canon ships (most often Ken x Daisuke & Taichi x Yamat0) abound. Fics seldom related to one another unless otherwise noted.

Loss, Gain, & Other Heartaches: A new enemy brainwashes a lot of human Chosen and their partners, after destroying the original twelve's patners, leading to the Digimon's data being merged with the Chosen's.

Division of Destiny: What if Vamdemon turned Sora into a vampire and from there defeated the Chosen? Well, he ended up turning Taichi, Jou, & Mimi into vampires as well, while imprisoning Hikari and giving Yamato, Takeru, and Koushiro to Piemon and the Dark Masters as slaves. A pesky rebellion formed of Daisuke, Iori, Miyako, Ken, Osamu, and various other charactes tries to fight them. Firm ships are currently just Ken x Daisuke.

When Blood Crosses: Oh, one of my favorites and probably my oldest AU altogether. What if humans and Digimon could have children together? And what if they did already? Seven out of twelve of the Chosen are part Digimon - or more. This is a full-blown multiverse. Stories don't always relate to one another, but the basic concepts tend to be the same. Course of Events: Set in a breeds AU: Vamdemon notices something unusual about Daisuke when he's in line to meet Tailmon and sends him to Piemon, who discovers who and what he is. How interesting. No current ships.

Walking The Edge: The Chosen have fought the Kaiser for years without knowing his true identity. Daisuke has also been dating Ichijouji Ken for years. So when the Kaiser finally reveals who he is - well, Daisuke has a choice to make. And the Kaiser will only allow one.

Pleasures of Shadows: Yami no Malik has been revived as an incubus.

Crimeland: An AU where there are three Kaiba brothers (Seto, Seth, and Mokuba) and - many other differences I haven't gotten to writing yet. Only set 'ship is Seto x Kisara.

Uncertain Choices: A modern day AU, with Atemu and Yuugi as twin brothers. Only set ship right now is Atemu x Mahaado. If I ever finish the sequel I have in mind, I will add Seto x Yuugi.

Reversal AU: In canon, Juudai has the poewr of the Gentle Darkness. Here, in a world very like Dark World but with differences (such as a sun), he has the power of the Destructive Darkness - and he is pure evil, enjoys it, and has the overall goal of destroying all of creation. A small, plucky rebellion stands against him. Do they stand a chance? Time will tell. Be warned: non-consensual Juudai x Johan, as well as someone becoming a vampire, and many other twisted plot points. I love this AU.

Stronger Than Water: We don't know much about Johan's past. So what if he actually grew up in Dark World, as Brron's adopted son? And was sent to kill Juudai? Firm ships are Yubel x Juudai and maybe Yubel x Juudai x Johan. I havevn't gotten far enough to be sure.

Hell's Ice: What if Ryou were the one taken by Kagemaru and Amnael instead of Fubuki? Well, add in some elemental affinities and we have the Hell Kaiser of Ice - one of the Seven Stars. No set ships othe than Yubel x Juudai, though I am debating a few.

Itch To Scratch: Juudai and Yubel are demons. Johan's an angel - or he thinks he is, anyway. What he really is, he'll find out eventually. Firm ship is Yubel x Juudai x Johan.

Bridges: So, in this series, Juudai's power is that of the Light of Creation. Johan has the Gentle Darkness - and Juudai has been possessed by the Light of Ruin for seven thousand years.

Dead Weight: It's the zombie apocalypse! Ahhh! No set in stone ships yet.

King's Champion: When a late-night break-in goes very wrong, Yubel ends up taking Juudai to Dark World for his own safety. He ends up being raised by Brron. But taking him away from Earth has consequence, both good and bad. Yubel x Juudai. Not ruling out Yubel x Juudai x Johan in the future.

Paladin's Quest: post ending series. Ryou dies of heart failure and is reborn as a duel spirit without his memories of his past. But that's going to change, because what he did in Dark World cannot be forgotten.

In Darkness We Find FIre: An AU of my own devising, that I call Healer/Firestarter. Healers can heal & communicate/grow plants, and Firestarters bun things. There are a lot more details than that but this tale is a retelling of canon through that lens. Established ship: Yubel x Juudai.

I had a really funky dream last night, but I don't remember it. All I remember is waking up a lot, upset, and trying to recall where I was. Bennett was curled up to me most of the night (good spiritie dood ^_^), but I don't think it helped much.... ah, well, it's the thought that counts.

Yesterday, I blew $44 on prismacolor pens. I got the box set of cool greys, plus a replacement 60% warm grey as mine is running out. That's me broke for another month now.

Well, I feel mighty stupid this morning. Yesterday, I kinda pulled a muscle in my left leg (riiight in my calf), but it stopped hurting. Woke up from a funky dream and got up to find it hurt. Now, being the idiot I am and not usually restricted by physical pain (hey, that's what ended up breaking my ankle), I went for a shower. Feeling headachey and cramped, I worked my way down the stairs, only to pull the same muscle again and fall about halfway down and land on the cat at the bottom. ^___^;;; <---- feels very dumb

*falls over* Meagen-san, you had me scared a minute there! If you had MEANT Mark, I would have had to call in paramedics and stuff to make sure you weren't doped up on anything!!!! @_@

Yeaaah, I just went to first period class this morning and got my classes for next year reviewed. Then I came home because the muscles in my abdomen are spasming and it hurts like bugger all.

This morning I spent the whole time trying to get my scanner to work, so thus, no morning blog. But I've got some stuff say for a change!

Today, lunch period was spent bothering Dan for the most part. He really ticked me off yesterday, and I'm extracting my revenge. So, I was making him jealous by glomping Matt at every opportunity (Matt doesn't mind too much, and he's nice to hug 'cause he's always warm.... and no, Mike, he's not my boyfriend! JUST A FRIEND!! T_T). It was rather comical. Civics class was cancelled, since Ms. Fotinos was at the Raptor's game with the people who signed up to go... the half of my class that was at school for the last three periods of the day got transferred to a Grade 12 geography class, in which was SO awkward that the teacher took pity on us and sent us all home. Redoing Angel Hunter again. This time, on the right sized paper... I'm sticking with the page layouts, tho, as I think I've got the look I want.

....yep, for the first time in YEARS, I'm the proud owner of twp pairs of blue jeans. I've not worn blue jeans since I was about 5... and these ones fit niiiiice. I have hips and a waist.... @__@

Anyway, mom and I went to Sears and then to Curry's Art Supplies. I got my two pairs of jeans, two men's dress shirts (one white, one black), a new sketchbook, 4 new warm grey prismacolors, and a new 05 pigment pen. I am a happy Meg-chan!

( 9:09 PM )   I have officially started rewriting the Chronicles of Benjamin Carter! WHIHAI! Here's a bit of what I've written so far.

Frail. Benjamin was frail. He was about 5'4, fifteen years of age, and pale. He was small and slight in build; a boy and not yet a man. Right now, he looked more fragile than he really was... curled up under the blankets of his rather small bed, bruised and crying. It was a familiar scene.

Benjamin wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand in a vain attempt to push the tears away. However, it was pointless since more just spilled down his cheeks as if to spite him and his efforts to stop them. He hated crying. Hated it. But at times like this --- only at times like this--- he couldn't help himself. He was so tired of being forced into the clutches of rich men; predators that liked their pleasure taken out on the young boys who could be bought if the price was right. He was sick of the violation and the abuse. Most of all, he was sick of his father pushing him into it. His own father. He hiccupped in his efforts to restrain his tears.

Benjamin wanted more than anything to run away. Run away to another city, another country, anywhere but where he was. Just out of the clutches of the people who hurt him so much. But he was trapped like the birds his father kept in the iron cages that lined the back yard. He was a prisoner, shackled to the bars of his perpetual cage. Derkshaw would catch him if he ran. Derkshaw always caught him.

"Damn him to hell," Benjamin thought bitterly, though he regretted thinking it for reasons he couldn't quite explain.

There was a tap of boots in the hallway, and Benjamin closed his eyes, breathed deeply, and pretended to be asleep. The heavy, even steps stopped outside his door. The door squeaked as it opened slightly.

Benjamin tried to keep his breathing slow and deep, tried not to flinch. He felt Derkshaw's gaze on him. It burned.

'Go away, papa, go away....'

The door opened a bit more, and the tap of boots carried into the room.

It would be a good half hour before Derkshaw left, the blood on his hands and shirt not his own.

Sola [Soren] and Sybandial - so innocent and sweet. ^_^ Jyrian and Quoik - I don't talk about these two much, but their relationship is really cute. Jesse and Rach - how can I not like this? He's cute, she's cute (haha, Rach!) Lucas and Lila - I liked this possibility... too bad she's dead and we won't find out what woulda' happened. Lucas and Carter - this is a slightly more demented relationship. Cadence and Lexiel - a more intellectual relationship... even if Lexiel is kinda big on sex for sick reasons. ^_^; Cadence3 and Cam - I'm a sick, sick girl. Lucifer and Setsuko - if we get Setsuko back, then we can resume this. They're cute too. ^_^

Other Stories Kiih and Ro (from Dora's "Three O'Clock") - I don't really know why... these two just kinda hit it off in my mind. Len and Yuri (see above) - ditto the above again.

I have the best best friends in the whole world! My best friends are Speller and Amy!

Speller, who I know I don't mention on here too much (I'm sorry! ;_;), is the smartest person I know. She's also one of the most talented writers, too. How many people can write a whole novel before/during high school? Aside from Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, not many. And her poetry kicks ass! She has a lot of it published. She can also draw better realistic stuff than I can, which makes me mondo jealous. It's not fair, I tell you! And she must learn to watch out for Hannibal. Beware him. Speller likes pudding. And pears. Damn those pears.

Amy and I have been friends since 7th grade, when she was the "new kid". We actually first met in drama class. She ran over a possum on her way to work. Yeeeah! She, too, is an amazing writer. It's not FAIR! She came runner up in the story writing contest a while back. I was proud. And I SCREEEEEEAMED the loudest when she won the Todd Bayless award. I live to embarrass.... ^_~

I am grateful to have such good friends. I love them. This concludes the sap. ^___^;

I watched Perfect Blue last night. It downright scared me! Seeing Hannibal didn't scare me, seeing the Rage; Carrie 2 didn't scare me.... but Perfect Blue DID. The "real Mima" (the one who's forever in the Cham costume) is SCARY!!! And the Mimaniac is pretty scary too. o_O Iffen you haven't seen this movie, get it. Especially if you like stuff like Neon Genesis Evangelion, X, or Serial Experiments Lain. I warn you, there's nudity, a rape scene, and a lot of gore. This movie freaked me out more than Eva did.

In other news... going to the art store tomorrow!!! And, I'm also skipping 5th period today. Maybe even 3rd, 'cause I'm stuck doing NOTHING all class anyway. -_-;

Hopefully they have the 10x15 paper I want... 'cause, you know, that being the traditional dimensions for comic drawing. Y'all knew that, right? *gives you a loooooook*

Last night, began a really angsty RP with Cam and Mark (well, it was angsty on Cam's end). Now, I only just realized that I think up really weird stuff that follow pretty much all the major time/space/reality laws. And all on a whim and at random. It's strange. You know you study this stuff too much when.... Yep, it's not every day when I come up with plots like that puppy. Using the imprints left in the reality weave to reconstruct a Mark.... that's some strange stuff (but it actually makes sense, which is what throws me). Huh.

I feel guilty... I got mad at Amy last night. She was being a little more depressing than usual, and I just couldn't stand it. I'm sick and stressed and I don't need to boost her ego all the time.

I've had this urge for the past couple of days to draw Cam shaking Lucas by the shoulders and looking very upset while Lucas looks blank. I don't really know why.... the caption for it has been running through my head, as it is this: "What am I to you?!" Trippiness.

Well, being the idiot I am, I didn't do my civics homework. My group is gonna love me for that.... then again, they're sticking me with the job of reading the presentation on Spain because I'm the only one that knows how to speak some Spanish. *sweatdrops*

I'm having urges to draw the weirdest things.... I hate it when Cam angsts at me from his little spot in my mind.

I've been doing a lot of drawing since I got those pens. It's scary... can't wait to get more! ^__^ I also gotta get me some 10 X 15 paper, 'cause that's the standard comic size. I don't feel up to fighting with printers because the size ratio on 8.5 X 11 is uneven. Screw it. I'll just redo it all on standards.

I'm having the straaangest breakfast. Pork chops. Don't ask me, it was the only thing I could find...

So, what we're gonna do, is I'm gonna drag her to Curry's Art Supplies store in a few hours and see how much THEY'RE selling them for.... maybe she'll buckle and take me back to the Office Place. ^_~

Tomorrow is gonna be a very busy day. I'm going into town with my mom and brother for most of the day, then it's home for a few hours (like, two), and to the mall where I shall meet with Quinn-chan and Chris to go for our ritual Riot Ink business meeting. Then I shall return from the depths of Quinn's anime/transformers shrine of a home and return to my humble lair around midnight. Then I'll prolly talk to my baaaaybeeeeee (aka: querida) for the remainder of the dark hours of the evening.

I got slim to no sleep last night due to sickness. Man, do I hurt... I feel like my guts are being put into a dryer's spin cycle constantly. And after drinking 3 L of cranberry juice, I'm not too good right now. I'm kinda waiting for mom to call so I can ask her what to do... I dunno if I should stay home or go to school. I bet I'm missing a fair bit. Well, there's always Fiona and Harpreet to ask. ^_^;;

I bet Dan's gonna kill me if I'm off another day. Mike's prolly beaten him up a few times by now without me there.

Mommie bought me the Silence of the Lambs yesterday. It's such a good movie, and all the better if you've read the book. The casting for the movie is very good, too... Jodie Foster makes such a cute Clarice Starling. It really pisses me off that Julianne Moore is playing Clarice in Hannibal (which comes out tomorrow, check your local listings ^_~). She is SO not Starling material. But as long as Sir Anthony Hopkins is still good ol' Hannibal Lecter the Cannibal, I'll watch it.

The layouts for pages 1-4 of AH have been redone. This is version 15... and I'm LIKING it! FINALLY!

Heeey, imouto! Mercutio was the best kyara in that play. I also liked Benvolio, he was cool too (my once-best-friend Brittany took to calling me 'Volio 'cause I liked him so much). Mercutio, tho, had one hell of an attitude, and he was interesting and VERY funny. Too bad he had to die... I'm glad you liked the little snippet. Allow me to post another, just for you! ^__^ This is another bit I quite like.

Benjamin found it facinating to watch him, he was so calm and so... well, he was the very picture of freedom as far as he was concerned. Yes, that was it. Benjamin admired Lokistrant's blasé attitude towards life. Envy, almost.

When one night, Lokistrant was late on his ritual visits to the plantation, Benjamin worried. Could he have been hurt?.... no. This was Lokistrant. He didn't GET hurt. But maybe he just didn't want to see him anymore?

Abandonment. A reoccurring issue. His throat felt dry suddenly. He curled up on his bed, blond hair over his eyes, and wished for morning, when he KNEW that Lokistrant would not come. No second guessing when daylight was involved.

Minutes passed. And quite unexpectedly, Lokistrant was there, startling the boy. Leaning against the far wall, watching quietly, decked out in his usual dark reds and silvers. Benjamin sat up. "How long have you been there? You scared me!"

Lokistrant smiled his usual enigmatic smile, the impression of fangs something no longer unexpected. "Carter, deepest apologies for being so late." The smile was kind, but the voice was final, the tone stating that there was to be no questions asked. Lokistrant held out his hand to the boy. "Care to come with me into town for a while?"

Oh! I saw Cast Away over the weekend! It's SO good! Tom Hanks is a surprisingly good actor... I mean, who else can get away with talking to a volleyball so convincingly? And we all know that Amy likes to imagine him naked (Tom, not the volleyball). You should all go see it! NOW!!!! That's an order!

Benjamin stared across the table at the stranger, worried. The man seemed in his twenties, if that, and had long brown hair that spilled over his shoulders and down his back. His eyes were an unnatural ruby red, and they were very intelligent eyes. Benjamin had learned early in life to be cautious, especially with the smarter ones.

The man crossed his hands on the table in front of him, casual. "Benjamin Carter, correct?"

Benjamin could dect a vague, though unrecognizable, accent. "Yes sir."

"You're fifteen?"

"Yes sir."

"Such a shame to see someone so young forced into... what you're familiar with."

Benjamin sunk down in his chair. "Why are you here? Why did you pull me away from papa?"

To match Benjamin's withdraw from the table, the man leaned forward, and smiled. Benjamin could have sworn he saw fangs. "You remind me of someone."

Carter's got some serious problems, and he's fun to write because he's so screwed up. He's got a really weird past. His dad was SUCH a jerk.... and up until becoming a vampire, Carter was good little Bennie; never had the nerve to fight his father. *ponders* It's an interesting story. My room is now a nice shrine of large wall hangings. On the walls around my bed, I have three Card Captor Sakura wallscrolls (two anime, one manga), and one kick-ASS Prozzak Saturday People promo poster. Thank you, John. *smilesmilesmile*

On Neopets, I am neopoor. Looks like my pets are gonna be eating at the soup kitchen a lot. -_-;

Meg's Art Corner! I know, I've not done much in the way of art lately. You know what's weird? I tend to draw more in school than at home. I think it's because I'm around so many people. I have come to the conclusion that Cam would make a really scary bad guy. Like, not c3... but if CAM were bad. He'd be scary. Not to mention, after being killed about 200 times, I think he knows the painful ways to kill people. Wonder if niichan (currently my neechan) sees this? Well, at least now he knows about Cam's possibilities for becoming nothing more than a lethal weapon.

DIGIMON ADVENTURE: LAST EVOLUTION KIZUNA

Trailer Analysis & Thoughts

Because what’s the point of having a new trailer if not to overanalyze it?

First impressions

The comparison between this and the first few trailers and the approach for tri. could not be more stark. Kizuna puts all the cards on the table up front and gives us fans exactly what we want: great visuals, iconic music, and the main gist of story & themes (not an international release date, though).

The comparisons to tri. are inevitable at any point in the lead up and during the new movie. Please don’t take any of this as a “negative criticism” of tri, a show I obviously adored. But I want this to be better than tri. 

The feeling I get is that Kizuna is learning the right lessons from tri. — the good parts, of course, but also learn from what it did less well. So I’m really thankful that we have Hiromi Seki and some of the original staff on board and hopefully doing a great job. Tri.’s preference mystery and challenging, hermetic storytelling seems to be squarely thrown out in favor of a more traditional, fan-centered, uncomplicated approach. The fandom reactions to the trailer are overwhelmingly positive, so it was probably a good decision.

Visuals/Music

The PV shows once again that people shouldn’t panic about concept art. The characters look beautiful, age appropriate and even well-dressed!

The animation and look of the movie looks stunning but, again, this doesn’t mean we should raise our expectations too much. tri. too had lovely visuals and battle sequences and then it had parts that were simply not animated at all.

I’m glad they’re using the original version of Butter-Fly rather than another posthumous remix or special edition. Wada should be remembered, yes, but not in an exploitative way.

The trailer starts by actually setting up the characters and where they are at the start of this story.

“Young Genius Menoa” makes her introduction, and unlike the introductions of Meiko, Maki and Diago (RIP - gone but not forgotten), this time the don’t have to speculate who she could be, since they actually tell us. I appreciate not having to go through another round of “Which previously seen character could she be?”. 

Group dynamics seem interesting, by the way...

Half the Adventure team doesn’t seem to be involved in Digimon business and it seems like they never see each other.

The 02 team, by contrast, sticks together (it’s almost like they’re actual best friends!)

Takeru and Hikari have apparently been excluded from the 02 squad, which given what happened in tri. is probably fair

The mysterious antagonist is also introduced... and named!

EOSMON, a Queen Bee digimon who steals the consciousness of adult children. 

Why a bee? IDK. But for once the story doesn’t seem to involve the End of the Worlds. Considering the last time the Chosen were fighting on three fronts representing supernatural forces and divine beings, a new, all-powerful Final Boss almost feels refreshing (never dismiss Vamdemon, though!).

Story

The trailer also nicely establishes the main plot of the movie, which has already been descried in detail on the official website:

Eosmon is stealing the consciousness of adult chosen children, including some of our main characters.

The bond between the Chosen and the Digimon is at risk of disappearing as they grow up.

Their new digivice has a countdown, indicating the number of evolutions they have left before the bond disappears.

Taichi and Yamato decide to fight despite of this risk.

Two new mysterious evolutions appear!

At first glance, this seems a genius idea:

It provides an organic reason to remove characters from the chessboard (leaving Taichi and Yamato as protagonists);

It automatically raises the stakes for Taichi and Yamato, since we can bet Eosmon got to their siblings, loved ones, and friends — and the only way of saving them is by making a choice to sacrificing their bond with their partners;

They get to introduce a new kind of special evolution that’s stronger than Omegamon, and makes sure Taichi and Yamato remain the strongest members of the team. (Someone has suggested they will “fuse” with their digimon, like in Tamers, and sounds great).

Note:

The part about the bond between the Digimon being threatened by adulthood could the reason why Kakudou balked out. It looks like the kind of tiny lore-related detail that would contradict nothing concrete in canon, except Kakudou’s own vision of the universe and its rules. As of now, I don’t see any signs for a significant departure from the previous shows, as people speculated at the time. 

Themes

Yamato’s lines and other points of the trailer reveal the movie will tackle familiar topics at the start of any Adventure story:

the Chosen Children can’t be at peace for too long

the kids have the habit of growing apart slowly whenever they aren’t engaged in saving the world

how does the role of a Chosen Child evolve when he or she stops being a child?

the need to decide when and why you are fighting

how humans adapt to digimon living among them

Presumably, at this point in time digimon should be public knowledge, the number of chosen should be rising, and digimon are coexisting in the real world at this time. We are in a fast track towards the epilogue world, so the implications this new status quo has, how the Chosen Children around the world live, the politics of a new world with digimon... all would be very intriguing. 

For many years, people have wondered if there are any biological/spiritual reasons why digimon are partnered with children, how adult partnerships could work, and whether it’s even possible to be a “Chosen Adult” (this is why keeping the translation DIgiDestined is a bad choice.) tri. already explored the psychological tensions caused by the increasing gap between the maturing chosen and their eternally childlike partners, and how traumatic it can be for an adult who stops being a chosen child and having a digimon partner by their side. It should be interesting to find out if there’s an actual in-universe mechanism or rule that favours pure-hearted children over complicated adults, leading to an inevitable situation of separation and of being an “ex” Chosen. 

It should also be interesting if the children themselves have different positions towards their role / the DW — some of them might be very happy to lead normal lives, while others need to keep that connection to the DW and want to keep fighting for it.

Questions Raised:

A possible downside of this trailer is that it doesn’t leave much to the imagination when it comes to what will happen in the movie. Sure, there may be a huge twist. But plot armor and the Epilogue ensure the kids will win at the end and find a way to preserve their partners even as they become adults. Not complaining: after tri., I would welcome a more traditional story.

Still, some things made me curious:

What is the origin of Eosmon?

What are the new evolutions? How will they get them? According to her bio, Menoa “makes references to relationships between humans and Digimon nobody’s heard of” — will she be the one to get them there? 

Will the events of tri. play into this movie at all?

What will the shorts add to the movie, especially for characters who don’t get much screen time? 

Will a digimon story featuring adults finally dare to touch romantic relationships?

Will we get special cameos?

What will we learn about the characters’ path to their Epilogue endgames?

Will we get any Epilogue hints?

Will this truly be the last Adventure story? Can anyone believe that?

I just hope Western fans can get answers sooner rather than later.

Digimon Adventure 02 Appreciation Challenge Day 9 - Which Family Dynamic In 02 Do You Find The Most Interesting?

I can’t choose! It’s the same as asking which Chosen Child is my favorite!

Apparently, my brain thought that Day 6 wasn’t torturous enough, so I decided to talk about every single family dynamic/relationship within the Digimon Adventure series! (No Kizuna-Related content is in this post)

Let’s go!

First is the Yagami’s (Or Kamiya’s)!

Out of the Digimon Adventure series, this has to be one of the families that the parents don’t have much conflict/drama

But the siblings do.

Hikari and Taichi always see their self-worth through each other. If Taichi wasn’t taking care of Hikari properly, he was doing wrong. If Hikari wasn't like Taichi, she wasn’t trying her best.

I’ve always thought that Taichi always tried to hide his worry for Hikari, kind of like the opposite of Yamato in a way.

“You’re soft. Or maybe I should say, you’ve gotten soft. In the past, you would have made snap decisions. But the reason you can’t…” Yamato looked at Hikari. “Has gotta be because your sister’s here.”

“Wh–What are you talking about…” Taichi was at a loss for words.

He hadn’t gotten timid because Hikari was with them. But it was true that he had gotten more careful so that no one got hurt or pushed themselves.

He couldn’t call that a con as a leader.

By thinking about how Hikari would feel about it, it led to him guessing how the others felt. It made him think about how to speak so that the others would feel motivated, and how to ask things that made them feel enthused about doing. Was sympathizing with how others felt affecting his position as leader?

That was a problem that Taichi needed to agonize over and conquer from here on. He just needed some more time on it.

Digimon Adventure Novel Chapter 8: The Dark Masters Part 3: A Falling Out Among Friends (Source)

I’ve always found this particular scene interesting. It shows a certain scenario that could have possibly happened within the anime universe. The book is basically saying that Hikari can change Taichi’s full persona just by being in his presence, which I do think is the case in the anime.

When Hikari came along during the Dark Masters Arc, Taichi’s main concern changed. It is Hikari instead of the group.

I’m even going as far as to say that, because of Hikari being in danger, Taichi verbally/physically abused Koshriou.

But that doesn’t mean he didn’t get the same treatment.

When Hikari was sick, Yuuko ended up slapping Taichi in the face for his failure of taking care of Hikari. And if you hurt a kid because of an action, they’re going to avoid that outcome, especially Taichi during this time because he’s super young (I guess around the age 7, but it could be different).

I think that after Yuuko slapped Taichi, he learned that if he isn’t doing the best he can for Hikari, then he’s failing.

Taichi’s values have always been the group before himself. He wanted to make everyone feel as if they were in a good position and move forward. I do feel that in the beginning, Taichi was only caring about moving forward. But it soon became clear later on that he wanted everyone to be happy where they were. He willingly let Yamato, Mimi, and Jyou temporarily leave the group for personal reasons, even though the fate of the world was in their hands.

But when Hikari is involved, it’s different for him. He can lose control of himself without realizing it, and doing dense decisions in the process.

But for Hikari, it’s different.

I think through Hikari’s family being proud of Taichi, and him leading the Chosen Children, that Hikari looks up to him so much as a role model. 

Hikari: I... was at the ocean...

Takeru: The ocean?

Hikari: I... might be going away... I felt... someone calling me...

Takeru: Someone...? Who?

Hikari: I don't know... But... the next time they call me... I may end up there...

Takeru: But that's... Who would do something like that?

Hikari: My brother... always protected me during times like these...

Takeru: Taichi-san... Always Taichi-san, Taichi-san... You're always depending on him! You can't do that!

(Digimon Adventure 02 Episode 13, The Call of Dagomon)

She thought that she was useless on her own. Without Taichi, she is unable to support people around her.

Hikari also learned to handle herself. She found someone that she can rely on and help, so the relationship isn’t only one way. (I expand more on this with Day 1, so you can check that out if you want)

But both of them get through their issues.

Taichi learned to let Hikari be. That he couldn’t always protect her. And by 02, he was willing to let her fight without his supervision. He even didn’t go with the 02 kids when they went to fight the Digimon Kaiser (Yes, I am fully aware that the older kid’s Digimon couldn’t fight and that they needed to give the younger chosen children an alibi. But I think old Taichi still would have gone with them. Please take this with a grain of salt).

I’m not sorry I had to

Hikari and Taichi love each other, but as the series went on, they learned how to live without needing each other constantly. Tri ruined part of this but lets ignore that.

Next is the Takaishi’s and Ishida’s

Personally, I think the tension between the two families is super realistic and done so well. With Takeru being optimistic (His crest is hope for a reason) and Yamato being pessimistic, both kids view the divorce in a different way.

That’s the look of an innocent kid that just wants his family to love each other again and be happy.

While it’s never said, I do think in Digimon Adventure, Takeru thinks that his parents might come back together. During this whole scene, he drags everyone towards each other, not letting the chance of them realizing how much they miss and love each other pass up that sneaky kid.

And Takeru has a record of hiding his true emotions and putting on a façade or not acting like his true self (When he ‘plays’ with Pinochimon and when Yamato comes over to his apartment in Digimon Adventure Tri: Confession). So I do think he doesn’t express to anyone that he believes his family to still get back together in Digimon Adventure 02.

In Episode 49, The Last Armor Evolution, BelialVamdemon’s Mind Illusion shows that Takeru isn’t satisfied with the way his family is, and that he thinks there is a chance they can get back together.

(Right before this scene happened, and I watched as Takeru was getting hit by the attack, I legit yelled at the screen, “Don’t do it! You better not do it!!” and when it showed his family together I screamed “NOOOOOOOOO!!! WHY DID ARE YOU DOING THIS TO HIM!!!!!” Then I saw his Natsuko and Hiroaki talking and Yamato smiling and then mentally cried.)

I do think by Digimon Adventure Tri, Takeru has accepted that his family won’t get back together, but still tries to help them get along.

I would like to point out that after every kid realized what they were seeing was a vision, they made a comment how they were fine with the way things were (Miyako saying that she wants her siblings, Iori saying how he wants to tell his mother about the Digital World instead of his father [knowing and accepting that he’s dead], Hikari saying how she and Tailmon have to fight to achieve her dream of Digimon and humans living in harmony, Ken accepting that he can’t change his past and that he has to move forward), Takeru didn’t. He didn’t mention that he was fine with how things were with his family.

The way the divorce affected Yamato is way different than the way it affected Takeru. It ended up changing his whole personality, because he wanted to seem reliable to his brother during these times.

“Yamato-san, you’re unfit for leadership because you’re too emotional. If the leader lets his emotions get the better of him, then he loses his followers.”

Yamato hated to admit it, but he was right.

The people around Yamato may have thought that he was a cold, aloof person, but that was only because he didn’t show what he thought to other people.

When had he become like that? He hadn’t been like that when he was younger. But after his parents decided to divorce and his mom took Takeru by the hand and left home…

Don’t go! Please don’t go! Don’t leave me!

The truth was, he had wanted to plead with her and cry — but he couldn’t.

Part of it had to do with his father standing by his side.

Maybe his mother had secretly wished for Yamato to say that to her.

But at that moment, Yamato had thought that he would never show weakness in front of his mom, even if he died from it. It was his own decision to follow his dad.

Ever since coming to the Digital World, even Yamato was surprised by how much emotion he expressed. All of the emotion that he’d held back while at home, at school, had come bursting out without pause.

And this Yamato was the only one that Koushiro knew. That was why Koushiro’s view of Yamato was “an emotionally unstable upperclassman.”

Yamato took on a nasty attitude to hide that Koushiro’s words had ruffled him.

“I’ve known this for a long time now, but it looks like I can’t work together with you guys after all. I’m leaving. Let’s go, Takeru.”

Digimon Adventure Novel Chapter 8: The Dark Masters Part 3: A Falling Out Among Friends (Source) 

(I know that the novels aren’t anime-cannon, but they show perspectives of the characters that aren’t in the show. Also it shows the way I interpreted some of the scenes/characters.)

With the anime, I think that Yamato did show a lot of emotion in the Digital World that he buried long ago. That’s why some fans call him an emotional mess (which is true), but don’t see why he’s like that. It’s because he was forced under pressure to change the way he lives because of his parents divorcing. If you look at this part in the book, it says that “Yamato took on a nasty attitude” to hide the fact that he was hurt, which isn’t the only time he does that. If you look at some scenes with Yamato, it shows him hiding his emotions with different attitudes. 

Natsuko: Yamato... You’ve grown taller again.

Yamato: Yeah, a little.

Natsuko: You look good. That’s great.

Hiroaki: Natsuko... It’s been awhile

Natsuko: Yes it has...

Takeru: It’s been a long time since the entire family got together, isn’t it, Onii-chan?

Yamato: Yeah, I guess so.

Within the divorce scene, Yamato treats Natsuko in more of a “cold” way, trying to avoid conversation and answering with short responses.

But later, we get an expression from Yamato that’s huge.

You can interpret his expression however you want, but I always thought it showed that he was regretting the way his family is, and that he had to go through that. It also was that he regretted the way he handled that situation.

That was his true feelings. He did care about his mom, and how his family is. And he wanted to show that, but under the pressure of his father and his façade of ‘acting cool’, he didn’t do that.

The whole divorce in Digimon might seem minor at first, but the more you watch Takeru and Yamato’s behavior, the sadder the whole thing gets.

Now the Takenouchi’s!

Since Sora’s father, Haruhiko Takenouchi, doesn’t live with Sora and Toshiko, Sora is stuck with her mother for big part of her life.

Which is not a good thing for her around Adventure.

Sora’s mother is an ie-moto (A master at flower arrangement), and she wanted Sora to learn flower arrangement, and quit soccer in the process. Sora thought this showed that Toshiko did care about her and (quoted from Sora), “My mom doesn’t see me as anything beyond the daughter of a flower arrangement school!”

The book even implies that Sora usually insults her mother and her passion on a daily basis.

But her mother does care for her, and Sora realized that she and her mom have more in comment than she thought. Both of them care for their loved ones, but in different ways. (WATCH IT HERE)

And when Miyako mentions them to her Haruhiko, he responds with this:

Haruhiko: I do research like this, so I travel all over Japan. Sometimes I even go overseas, so I can't easily go home. For a while, it caused my daughter to rebel against her mother. But three years ago, my daughter suddenly changed. When we talked about it, she said it was thanks to something called Digimon.

Miyako: Thanks to the Digimon?

Haruhiko: How to put it... When she was with the Digimon, she experienced a lot and matured. She learned to view things with an open mind. I'm grateful to these Digimon.

Poromon: Ah, well...

Miyako: I don't understand all that much, but... I'm glad.

The English dub has Haruhiko say that he can’t let them go to the mall together, ‘cause they’ll spend all their money together (Something close to that).

I love this family so much, for no reason whatsoever. It might develop slowly, but it develops so much at the end, and it’s one of the scenarios that gets resolved, which Sora deserved.

The Izumi’s yay!!

I’m going to get this out of the way as soon as possible. I love with a fiery passion Kae Izumi.

The relationship between Koshirou and his parents is kind self explanatory. After he learned he was adopted at such a young age, he had to deal with the tough decision of what to do next. Does he still treat them the same? Confront them about it? In the end, he struggles trying to deal with this piece of information, and obsesses over his computer to take his mind off it.

To be completely honest (And this is my opinion) I wasn’t moved by the adoption-talk that much. I’m not saying it’s a bad scene, but between the Vamdemon fight, the other parents, Wizardmon’s sacrifice, it kinda got lost with everything going on. It is still a powerful scene, but I wished it was at a better time, and not in the middle of the chaos.

But even after they told him he was adopted, he still insists that they’re the ones that he loves the most.

Just look at the way Kae and Masami look at each other when he says that!

And Koshirou becomes very protective of them in Digimon Adventure 02.

When Kae comes to Koshirou, Jyou, Yamato, and the 02 kids while they’re watching the children with dark spores, she brings them Onigiri (Did I mention that Kae is the best???). Koshirou insists that she stays home because she could get hurt, but she decides to help them out by contacting their parents and Koshirou says that’s a great idea, though he seems as if he just wants her to leave so she will become safe. WATCH HERE

The way Koshirou forgives his parents and how he loves them more after their conflicts is so amazing, and I wish we saw more of it.

Make way for the Tachikawas!

Mimi’s family is so pure and amazing it’s just so beautiful.

I CAN WATCH THEM ALL DAY!

The fact that Keisuke will eat whatever Satoe makes is adorable, and the fact that Satoe and Mimi both have the same personalities is adorable, and the fact that Keisuke rammed himself into DarkTyrannomon with a golf cart to protect his wife and daughter is adorable.

They’re great! Is there really much else to say?

The Kido’s (kinda)!!!

Since the parents only show up in Digimon Adventure Tri and Digimon Armor Evolve into the Unknown, you would think that they had little effect within their sons, but they do.

I love the way they portray Jyou’s father as if he’s always there in the back of his son’s mind, watching over him. If he were to appear in Adventure/02, I think he would be a lot less intimidating.

Narrator: The Kido family, home to a line of prominent doctors hailing from the Edo period, is now having its midday meal with an extra-special sushi platter to congratulate their third child, Jou, for having finished his exams.

Jou’s mother: Here, Jou! Take anything you want! Even if it’s the tuna, or the sea urchin! Jou: Thanks, Mom. Shin: You worked hard, you know. Jou: Thanks, Shin-niisan. But the exams only just finished, so they haven’t announced the results yet… Shuu: Doesn’t matter, we’re still celebrating! If you don’t take it, we’re going to. Take it. Take it! Jou: O-Okay, okay, Shuu-niisan… Gomamon: I’m taking some, too!…So, Jou, what are you gonna do now? If you’re gonna be a doctor, are you planning on taking over your dad’s hospital?

(beat)

Jou: H-Hey, Gomamon! Why’d you have to say that? Gomamon: S-Sorry. Was I not supposed to? Ahaha… Jou’s father: Jou. Jou: Y-Yes, Dad? Jou’s father: You don’t have to push yourself so hard. I’m not going to force you. Jou: Ah, no, it’s more like, it just feels too early to talk about this… Jou’s father: Shin and Shuu have already decided to take their own paths, so you have the right to do the same. Don’t worry too much about it, and do what you want to do…hmph… Gomamon: (aside) …Ah, he really does want you to take it over, huh. Jou: (whispering) Well, yeah…

Digimon Adventure 02: Armor Evolution to the Unknown (Source)

This whole scene basically sums up how everyone feels about each other in the Kido’s family (Including Gomamon). 

Jyou doesn’t want to disappoint his father, but both of his brothers want him to do what he wants to do in life.

Shuu and Shin both support Jyou to do what he wants to do, encouraging him to make his own decisions with his life. While his father denies the fact that he’s pressuring Jyou to take over the hospital, he does want Jyou to become a doctor and take over the hospital. 

Shin trusts Jyou enough to tell him about his career path, which if it leaks to his father, it’ll probably make him very upset. And Jyou seems to know about Shuu’s career path, since Sora and Jyou both talk about it in Digimon Adventure: original story, 2-and-a-half year break. 

I do wish that we saw more of Jyou’s mom, Jyou’s father but once again, I think barely seeing Jyou’s parents gives a feeling of uncertainty to the audience, which is probably the same feeling that Jyou gets with his parents.

THE AMAZING MOTOMIYA’S!!!

I always thought that the relationship that Daisuke and Jun have is amazing. They always get into fights and tease each other, but you get the impression that if one of them were in danger, the other one would care a lot.

Takeru: Are you Daisuke-kun's sister, by any chance?

Jun: Yeah, but... who are you? 

Yamato: He's my younger brother, Takeru.

Takeru: Nice to meet you. Daisuke-kun is my classmate.

*Jun gives Takeru the pen*

Jun: Oh? Well, you're cute! Sign too! 

*Takeru signs the shirt*

Jun: Daisuke isn't cute at all...I wish I had a brother like you two...

Takeru: By the way, Daisuke-kun... I met your sister today.

Daisuke: Ah... so?

Takeru: So?

Daisuke: She bad-mouthed me, right?

Takeru: Not really.

Daisuke: Yeah, she did. She always has to talk bad about me to everyone. She doesn't like me... well, I don't like her either, so we're even.

*Yamato walks up to both of them*

Yamato: Hey! What are you talking about?

Daisuke: What?

Yamato: If you were my younger brother, I wouldn't forgive you for that. I'd beat you up.

Daisuke: Interesting. Bring it, then!

*Yamato starts heading over to Daisuke, Takeru holds him back*

Takeru: Stop! You won't hit him. You wouldn't do that, right?

Yamato: I wouldn't... but watch what you say.

*Takeru and Yamato walk away*

Daisuke: Why can't he just shut up? I can say whatever I want about that stupid girl.

You could tell right off the bat that they did not have a good relationship.

The people behind the show started to make their relationship more comic relief (Really everything Jun-related is comic relief).

But they both have amazing interactions that many people could relate to.

In Episode 32, they both have a priceless interaction of them insulting one another. It’s great, and it’s better in English.

They’re both so precious.

Their family situation might not be as big as the Izumi’s, Takaishi/Ishida’s, or Kido’s but it’s something that I feel as if many can relate to. The feeling of not having a family (especially siblings) that doesn’t care for you is hard. I think this family dynamic doesn’t get as much attention as it should within the fandom, but that’s just my opinion.

The (many) Inoue’s!

The Inoue family is a great family for how it shows such a simple problem. 

Siblings not getting along/are annoyed with each other.

I’m sure many can relate to this (including me!). Some people with sisters/brothers say they always want to be the only child, but at the end of the say, many realize that they love their siblings and that they make a big impact on their lives (but not everybody).

In Sky Night, Aquilamon, Miyako has a conversation with her siblings after a conflict with Ken

Miyako: Anyway, I understand what Daisuke was trying to say.

Momeo: Miyako, what's wrong?

*Miyako explains to her siblings what happened*

Momeo: Well... I think he's serious.

Miyako: You think so?

Momeo: Yeah. But what really matters is what your feelings are.

Miyako: My feelings?

Momeo: Will you be able to forgive your boyfriend?

Chizuru: "This week, Geminis with AB blood will be lucky in love if you open up."

Miyako: Don't get any ideas! He's not my boyfriend!

Mantarou: Well, that doesn't matter. Just don't regret your decision.

Miyako: My feelings...

*Scene changes to Miyako lying on her bed with Poromon*

Miyako: My feelings, huh...?

Poromon: If it bothers you so much, why not ask Ichijouji Ken himself?

(Digimon Adventure 02 Episode 25, Sky Night, Aquilamon)

This scene shows that Miyako’s sisters love to pick on her, that her brother tries to keep them calm. Even though it seems as if Miyako’s sisters didn’t take that conversation seriously, they gave her really good advice and Miyako remembered what they said.

And also in Episode 49, The Last Armor Evolution, BelialVamdemon’s Mind Illusion shows that Miyako doesn’t want siblings, but she realizes that she does love her siblings, and that she wants them in her life.

The realization of Miyako missing her siblings is something that can be overlooked, but to me it’s a great message that many people can relate to.

It’s time for the Hida’s!

They lost an amazing father due to a shooting.

Shootings/assassinations are something very serious. Many people leave this world because of them. Iori’s father is no different. Everyone in the family is devastated because of the death of Hiroki Hida.

I think the death of Hiroki is what made Iori so mature at a young age. He had to deal with heavy topics while being so young, so he saw the world in a different way.

The way Iori treats Ken might have been affected by the death of his father. He learned very young what people could do, and saw what the consequences were to their actions. Iori growing up with this mindset made it difficult to become friends with Ken after what he has done.

Not only does the death of Hiroki affect his whole family on how they see what a good person is, it also makes them try to avoid doing any bad things.

Fumiko: Oh, Iori. You're home already? Good timing. I wanted you to go to Nobuzane-san's.

Iori: Ah, well, right now...

Fumiko: Do you have something to do?

Iori: Well...

Fumiko: What is it? Please tell me.

Iori: I'm sorry, I can't tell.

Fumiko: You can't...? What do you mean?

Chikara: Don't ask, Fumiko-san.

Fumiko: But...

Chikara: If you force him, Iori will have no choice but to lie. If you can't say, that's fine. Better than lying. Just don't lie, ever.

Iori: Thank you very much.

Takeru: Iori-kun!

Iori: What is it?

Daisuke: It's your Digimental!

Iori: My... Digimental?

Jyou: Ah! Isn't that the Crest of Faithfulness?

Tailmon: "Faithfulness" fits Iori well, doesn't it?

Iori: That's not true. 

Jyou: I think it fits you perfectly.

Daisuke: Come on, get down here!

Iori: N-no! All this was caused by that Digimental. That Digimental...

*Miyako starts coughing*

*Scene changes to them standing around the Digimental*

Jyou: Come on, pick it up.

Daisuke: Pick it up already...

Iori: It's useless... I can't lift it.

Takeru: You won't know until you try, right?

Iori: But... but it's my fault that everyone was in trouble.

Daisuke: Eh? It is?

V-mon: If it's about that, we were the ones who closed the shutter...

Takeru: It's no one's fault.

Iori: And I... I lied. 

*Iori starts crying*

Iori: Grandfather said I should never lie... That's why... I don't deserve the Digimental of Faithfulness...

Jyou: Well, there are bad lies and good lies. Lies that hurt people and lies that save people.

Armadimon: Yup, yup, it was a justified lie, dagyaa!

Jyou: Exactly!

Iori: But...

Jyou: If anything, I'll talk to your grandfather when we get back. Your lie didn't hurt me at all, but if you hadn't lied, who knows what could have happened...

Iori: Jou-san...

Jyou: Do you understand now?

Iori: Yes. 

Armadimon: Okay, Iori, try to pick it up, dagyaa.

*Iori picks up the Digimental of Faithfulness*

Daisuke: See, I knew it was Iori's!

Both scenes are amazing. It shows how high Iori’s standards are for a person whenever they’re “good” or not. He even is very critical of himself.

I was surprised as the series went on how big of a role Chikara was. Not only was his son one of the first people to know about Digimon, but he also befriended BlackWarGreymon and attempted to befriend Yukio Oikawa. He was always there for Iori and helped cover for him when he had to do anything related to Digimon and the Digital World. Not only is Chikara looking after Iori as a father helped Iori a lot with handling his father, but he’s looking after all the Chosen Children without realizing it.

Finally, the Ichijouji’s

Ken is a smart kid. And most parents are proud when their kids seem to have a talent that is better than other kids their age (“smarter”, “more athletic", “having better musical talents”, etc). Some tend to go beyond and have their pride in their children become a requirement for their kids.

The Ichijouji’s do have this problem.

First, it was Osamu.

Ken Narrating: The genius was big brother Osamu. He could do everything. Everything... I was so proud...

*Flashback to Ken and his mother*

Ken: It's our neighbour.

Neighbor 1: Osamu-chan is such a smart boy!

Neighbor 2: I'm so envious of you!

Neighbor 3: He's nothing like our son.

Neighbor 4: I wish my son became more like Osamu-chan!

Neighbor 5: What did you do to make him such a smart boy?

Neighbor 6: He's got so many good traits from both of you!

Neighbor 7: He's such a genius!

Ken Narrating: Mom loved hearing those words.

*Scene changes to Ken seeing his mother praising Osamu*

Ken: Mama?

Ken’s Mother: Osamu-chan, people praised me again saying you're such a good boy!

*She turns around*

Ken’s Mother: Ken-chan, you're a good boy, too!

Ken: I'm always just an addition...

Ken: Mama cares only about my brother because everyone praises him. It doesn't matter if I'm here or not. Would that be me if my brother wasn't around? If only he wasn't around... if only he... That's it... all he needs to do is disappear...

Ken [yelling]: Disappear, big brother!

*Ken has a flashback of Osamu hitting him and telling him he’s a bad person*

Ken: My brother hates me. Because I'm not a good boy. Because I'm the worst kind of people. But why? I'm sad...

*Ken sees his parents together with Osamu*

Ken: My brother has everything, and I have nothing. I wish my brother... 

Ken [yelling]: Just disappeared!

*Ken witnesses Osamu dying*

Ken: Big brother...? Is it because I wished you disappeared?

*Ken seeing his parents devastated*

Ken’s parents took so much pride in their son, that they didn’t notice their other son. So after the death of Osamu, his parents were left with a child that doesn’t know who they are or what their purpose is. Since Ken had no passion, their parents raised him the same way they did with Osamu. That’s why Ken didn’t know who he was after he stopped being the Digimon Kaiser. He had nothing before he was the Digimon Kaiser. 

But during the time he was the Digimon Kaiser, he was famous for all of his skills in many different categories (like Osamu).

Even Iori and Takeru are very impressed.

I always tend to compare Ken and Koshirou together. They’re both very smart kids, but there’s one factor that sets them apart.

Koshirou isn’t open about his skills, not showing the public on TV or any other way. But he is working for people in Digimon Adventure Tri, which shows that he is utilizing his skills, but not in the way Ken is portrayed.

Ken is open about his talents. He does contests and shows off his skill to the public, which makes him have a huge following. Even though Ken was influenced by his dark spore, I do think his parents had a part of building up his confidence. They encouraged this behavior, trying to gain back their old son (Even though they might not have realized that).

After their parents realized what they had done, they began to treat him like Ken. A kid who is relatively smart who is kind and selfless at heart. And those are his best traits.

It’s really great to see this progression of Ken and his parents both realizing the mistakes they made, and starting over, being a family.

36 Questions to Make You Fall in Love

SO my boy Eugene Lee Yang released a video where he answered the 36 first date questions to make you fall in love.  Apparently, the idea of the questions is to create an emotional connection upfront.  

(Related: It’s been interesting to see what Youtube/video content creators have come up with to produce content from home during quarantine!).

ANYWAY I thought it was an interesting “get to know you” thing, so I’MMA DO IT TOO below the cut!  It is extremely long.

1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

I have way too much anxiety to impose on a stranger to this extent, so I’d magically have my friends teleported to my home (pre or post quarantine).

2. Would you like to be famous? In what way?

Fame is a nightmare scenario for me.

3. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

Yes, but only with service providers.  I can and will utterly blank on what I need and what my dang name is when asked, “How can I help you?”

4. What would constitute a "perfect" day for you?

Ha!  Right now, just a day without covid-19.  I miss the outside world.  Even things like browsing a store sound heavenly.

But...  The best days of my life thus far were my Hawaii vacation, especially snorkeling and hiking through a rain forest.  So...  I’d want a day where I wake up early in Hawaii to snorkel and hike, and then drink mai tais and watch the sunset with my husband.

5. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

...I sang “Let’s All Sing Like the Birdies Sing” in the shower today...

6. If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?

Oh, yikes, my mind.  My mother’s father started degrading from Alzheimer’s when I was about 10.  

(I’m assuming this refers to having a healthy mind throughout your life, and not remaining frozen in your 30-year-old mindset/experience set).

7. Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?

No, not at all.  Definitely hoping it’s not Alzheimer’s related.

8. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.

Well, I assume you and I both love Digimon!

As for my husband, we’re alike in habits and hobbies, but different in personality.  We’re both introverted homebodies who love video games/nerd stuff in general/learning.  We also highly value security, so we tend to work hard and save.  I’d say we’re both grounded and reasonable, although I’m the more emotional one.

9. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

This is too hard!  I’m constantly feeling so grateful.  I love existing as me!  I seem to have a strong sense of self, and of where I stand, and that’s so dope.  I’m also intensely grateful for my husband, who is so generous with his love and affection and care.  And I’m glad that I found a career that suits me so well.

10. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

Er.  

I had a difficult childhood.  It’s hard, because my Mom loves me and my brother and sacrificed so much for us...  But she (and all of our relatives) failed to protect me from my father’s various flavors of abuse.  We were both also under a ton of pressure to excel academically.

Still, I can’t change the past.  I’d rather donate to women’s shelters and resources for people dealing with abuse at home.

11. Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.

Let me bullet point it:

-Spent most of my time from 6 months old to 2 years old in a body cast because my hip wasn’t in the socket, and my muscles developed around it like that.  Went to tons of physical therapy.

-Drew comics when I was 3 and 4 because I needed to get ideas out, such as they were, but I couldn’t write yet.

-I love cats, and have had at least one since I was five.

-My home situation was rough.  I started trying to plan how to get out and be independent early and have been working and saving since I was 16.

-Interests/hobbies: animals, singing, nature, science, books, music, writing, video games, art, baking

-Met and started dating my husband at age 14.  We’re blissfully married.

-First job was at an aquarium.  Worked summers at a biotech firm during college.  I’ve been working in biotech since I graduated.  I currently research immunotherapies.  I have a B.S. in biology.

-I have general anxiety disorder and see a therapist every other week.  Therapy has been amazing, A+ would recommend.

-I’m an asexual cis lady

-I need to read and write to stay sane.  Reading connects my mind to other minds, which helps me grow, understand, and think.  Writing releases the pressure that builds up in my brain.

-I’m introverted, but friendly.  Also, I’m an enormous dork.

12. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

Teleportation

13. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?

No, thanks.  I realize the point is to share information about myself through my response, but...  This just isn’t how humans are meant to live.  We’re supposed to discover our way and forge our futures, not have answers magically handed to us.

14. Is there something that you've dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it?

...Sigh.  My husband and I have dreamed of visiting Japan since we were teens.  We were just starting to plan the trip when covid-19 hit.  Thankfully, we hadn’t booked anything yet.

15. What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?

Being me, being happy, whole, fulfilled, and confident.  There’s no one magic accomplishment that makes everything “worth it” or makes me feel like I “made it.”

16. What do you value most in a friendship?

Oh, oh, oh, there’s a lot to this!  Obviously, a friend needs to be kind (you don’t want to spend time with a jerk), but they also need to be emotionally mature (lending a kind ear is good, but functioning as a therapist for a friend is exhausting).  But it’s the best if a friend has both of those things, but also is interesting in some way.  Like... maybe they’re funny, or charismatic, or share your hobbies.  And it’s a great feeling when a friend reaches out to you and makes time for you now and then; it’s a vulnerable feeling to always be the one to reach out.

17. What is your most treasured memory?

My first kiss, which was with my husband when we were 15.

Also, my entire trip to Hawaii with my husband.

18. What is your most terrible memory?

I’ll probably go with the time my father called me into his room while I was doing homework- I was probably 16ish?  He told me I’d never be as smart, talented, or successful as my brother, at great length, for no discernible reason.  He said I’d have to work more than twice as hard as him to get by, since I was so deficient.  I still have nightmares where this replays.

19. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?

I would say that I would quit my job and travel with my husband, but...  You know, covid-19.  I’d want to spend a ton of time with my husband, see as much as I can of the world, and do whatever I can to get details in order and make things as easy on my husband as possible.  

20. What does friendship mean to you?

It means that you love someone and actively want them in your life, and you treat them as such.

Life is short, and people only have so much physical and emotional energy.  If you choose to freely and joyfully give it to someone, then that’s a big deal.

21. What roles do love and affection play in your life?

???  Same as anyone else, I’d assume.  People need people, although everyone has different levels of need.  I guess I do tend to avoid casual relationships so I have more energy for my closest relationships.  I’m also extremely independent, so I think my needs are smaller than average.  

22. Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of five items.

I assume that you, reader, are a cutie pie.  Hello!

But let me talk about my husband!  He is wicked smart, always learning for fun, and skilled at logic/reasoning.  He’s also a hard worker, and the head of software development at his company at age 31.  He is sooo shy and terrible at small talk, but I adore that he’s the quiet type, since the world is always so loud.  He’s gentle and loving and kind, and he takes amazing care of me and is constantly looking for ways to do something for me.  And he’s laid back and easy-going, which is so soothing.  

23. How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people's?

No and no.

24. How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?

It’s... complicated.

I’ve had to explain to a lot of people that, despite being friendly and open, I’m introverted and independent, and a total homebody.  I often find that people want to go to bars with friends, or maybe see movies or go to festivals.  I would rather talk on a video chat while we each do our own thing.  People tend to want too much too fast for my slow, cautious pace.

28. Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you've just met.

I like that you love Digimon and have somehow managed to read this much of this never-ending thing.  Also, you look cute.

29. Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.

I asked my husband out over the phone when I was 14.  I was sitting on a wooden chair that was far, far older than me.  Because I was so nervous, I was rocking the chair back and forth.

It splintered and broke while I was trying to ask my husband to my school’s homecoming dance, pitching me to the floor in the middle of the most crucial sentence.

30. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?

Yikes, this is a lot, but I last cried in front of my therapist.  I asked out loud, for the first time, why no one did anything to protect me as a kid and ended up bawling.  

I can’t remember the last time I cried alone.  Generally, I go to my husband for support.

31. Tell your partner something that you like about them already.

Your fine, fine taste in blogs.

32. What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?

You know, I’m not sure.  Millennials tend to have fairly dark/nihilistic senses of humor.  I will say that, generally speaking, you should only “punch upward.”  Ie, don’t kick people who are down.  It’s better to joke about the rich than the poor, for example.

33. If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven't you told them yet?

Sometimes I wish I could articulate some things to my parents, but they wouldn’t hear me, anyway.  I know because I’ve tried.  

But my loved ones know I love them, so that’s taken care of.

34. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?

The boring and honest answer is my important documents and my computer/external hard drive/charger/cellphone, followed by a fire extinguisher.   But I realize the question is about what physical items I hold dear, so...  Assuming my wedding bands are already on my finger, like always, and that I am wearing my glasses and some clothes, I’d grab my grandmother’s clock.

35. Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?

Jesus Tap-dancing Christ.

My husband’s.  I love him beyond compare.

36. Share a personal problem and ask your partner's advice on how he or she might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen.

I’m 31, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether or not I want children.  The trouble is, I feel like my country has gotten so much worse since I’ve been alive, and especially over the last four years (I’m American).  Meanwhile, the environment is deteriorating globally...  Would my child even have clean drinking water when they’re 30 or 40?

Is it ethical to have children under these circumstances? 

And this is all before I even address the question of whether or not I want to be a mother, or if I think I would be a good mom!  Yikes.
