Movie Review: The Holdovers
Alexander Payne is truly the master of combining comedy and tragedy! His first few films Citizen Ruth, Election, and About Schmidt truly announced him with smart comedies that often times challenged the viewer. What really blew me away was his 2004 film Sideways. The comedy about two middle-aged friends in the Wine Country for a week before one gets married was such a LOL funny comedy one minute, sad about their mid-life trajectory the next. But in the end, it was about accepting where you are in life, not where you aren't. I out and out loved it! His next film 2011's The Descendants was a very multi-layered family drama set in Hawaii. I included it in my 10 Best Movies of the 2010s. I liked his 2013 father-son road movie Nebraska, but there was some pushback from audiences. God forbid a director tries to make a black and white slow burn! But I appreciated the ensemble cast and what he was going for. 2017's Downsizing was a misstep for Payne. I was all for him trying something different and stepping into wild Michel Gondry-territory, but the story was a little uneven. Now Payne has made a serious return to form with The Holdovers, which was actually filmed in Massachusetts last Winter, and reunites Payne with Sideways star Paul Giamatti. I got to attend a special IFFBoston Post-Fall Focus screening at Somerville Theatre and Payne himself attended for an intro and Q&A. There was actually a scene that was filmed at the Somerville Theatre and now the finished film was playing there!?!

Set in Barton Academy, a private boarding school for boys, in 1970 New England just before Christmas break, Giamatti plays Paul Hunham, an unpopular curmudgeonly teacher. He gets stuck supervising students who are unable to go home for the holidays. Hence the name The Holdovers. Also there during the break is lunch lady Mary (played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph, a scene-stealer from Dolemite Is My Name and the High Fidelity TV series). After all of the other students go away with one of the student's rich father, an unpopular student Angus Tully (played by newcomer Dominic Sessa) is left with Mr. Hunham and the two form an unlikely friendship.
This is easily one of the best movies of the year and one I'm sure is going to become better and better with each viewing during the holiday season. There is a serious early 70s influence, most prominently from Hal Ashby (Payne was among the interviewees in the 2018 documentary Hal about Ashby). But beyond the influences, this truly feels like the kind of movie that would have been released in the early 70s: the look, the feel, the sound, and the way the characters carry themselves. But like all of Payne's films, this balances comedy and tragedy. Without getting into spoilers, there is a sense of loss for these characters that is heightened by being alone during a holiday break. But that connection that is made is truly special. Sessa is a revelation. Payne has a knack for casting newcomers who swing it out of the park and Sessa is going places. Randolph is exceptional as a grieving mother. But it is definitely Giamatti's show. He's been consistently good in countless films since Sideways, but this is a part tailor-made for him. Someone who is highly intelligent, yet so antisocial. Payne isn't known for working with actors more than once, but we can only hope this is the start of more collaborations. All hail Payne!

4.5 out of 5 stars
Intro and Q&A:
The screening I attended, Payne gave an intro. He noted that this was the first screening on 35mm. After the film, critic Ty Burr (a friend and colleague of mine) moderated a Q&A. Here are some of the takeaways:
Tumblr media
Burr and Payne at the Somerville Theatre
Local Crew: He had tons of positive things to say about the Massachusetts based crew that worked on the film. He mentioned of all the films he made outside of the state of Nebraska (i.e. The Descendants in Hawaii and Downsizing in Toronto), this is the one that has stayed in touch the most. In the audience at this screening were a ton of local crew members. You could hear cheering during certain scenes, locales and cast members. Payne mentioned that he didn't know New England, beyond visiting Dartmouth and some Ivy League colleges as a teen.
Somerville Theatre: in addition to being a location, Payne mentioned that they screened some 70s films for the crew in the cinema. He also added that the film had played festivals and had opened in NY and LA but this was the first screening on 35mm.
He talked about what he's been doing since Downsizing. He apparently flirted with directing The Menu and The Burial.
Screenplay: Five years ago he received a TV pilot from David Hemingson that was set in a boarding school in New England. Payne called him and said he didn't want to do the pilot but wanted him to write a screenplay in the same universe. This marked the first time he had directed a screenwriter as opposed to writing with a co-writer or getting a completed screenplay from a writer.
Casting: After not finding the right actor from a casting call, they began searching private boarding schools in Massachusetts. That's how Sessa was cast.
This event was a part of IFFBoston. For more info go here.

Delighted to report back from my evening outing that there exists a combo burlesque-ballet that uses the general music structure of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” — with various different forms of dancing and an emphasis on not sex per se, but more so sexuality (in the many forms that discussion takes with queerness, sexual shame, sensuality, etc etc) — titled “The Slutcracker”

BOOTLEGS 2023
The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!
Anyhoo, here's a sampling of the Doom & Gloom goods from 2023 to get you caught up ... thank you to the tapers, the archivists, the fans, the innocents.

The Carlisle House promotion...?
I noticed that There were a few things else besides the family talk in the People’s Family article and the other article that got published yesterday. The articles had focus on the home town as well.
Sudbury Massachusetts: Family moved to Sudbury, Chris lives near his family in MA, Carly is an English teacher and the head of the drama program at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
Concord and Concord Youth Theatre: Siblings taking classes at Concord Theatre, Lisa the artistic director, Shanna costume designer, and Chris sits on the advisory board. Chris attended the grand opening of the theatre in 2019 in West Concord.
Massachusetts, Lisa grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts, her brother and father held imp political positions in MA
Love of the whole family about Boston Sports teams
The other article also talked about their roots in MA and again their connection to Concord Theatre.
If you notice there has been a side-by-side focus on Chris’ home town and state. I think these articles might be one of the initial stepping stones towards the promotion of his “Carlisle House”
Let’s go back to how the fandom got to know about this house.
In Nov 2022, a team real blog shared some info about this house that they had received from a stan of LSA.
In Feb 2023 the house talk got rehashed. People compared the trees but mostly people were not convinced.
In May, the real push about the house came around. (I am going to refer to the Main Team Real Blog which is also the oldest one as MTRB. Also, AD stands for Architectural Digest)
4 May – MTRB got the info about a sighting in PT, but they didn't publish it due to a lack of proof
5 May - Chris' autograph from PT
6 May - PT photo
10 May - house talks inside the fandom (acc to MTRB's source a pottery video was filmed on the same day)
11 May - DM podcast about an engagement in the new house and fall wedding
13 May - Chris announced the pottery winner; MRTB revealed later about Alba being in the house during the pottery video shooting
14 May – Sighting of Chris and Alba on their way (allegedly) to the new house; I think it came from another team real blog.
15 May - House Beautiful article about them being engaged in the new house;
22 May - MTRB posted about their engagement confirmed by 2 sources that were credible in the past; RadarOnline article about the summer wedding;
23 May - MTRB posted the ask from AD anon (Allegedly Conde Nast staff knew about the engagement since April) about AD feature for June that was delayed by Chris' rep;
9 June - MTRB received updated info about the AD feature for September but they didn't publish it until they talked to AD anon;
21 June - MTRB published the update about the AD feature.
What I am thinking is the AD feature about the Carlisle house might be true. We all know teams have used the fandom to breadcrumb about this relationship. It seems Chris has been using this rs, Jinx, SMA, and Carlisle house that will be featured in AD to promote himself. The information about the house has made its way to the fandom and has been discussed with animation on different sm platforms that give this house more publicity. This house might be a business investment. It doesn’t seem like it will go to the market as it was also mentioned to MTRB too. The reason seems to be he has spent a lot of money on renovations, taxes and maintenance of the house and it seems he might not get a big profit by selling it. The more reasonable explanation seems to be, it might be set up as a mini hotel, B&B and might be up for rental. It will bring New business spot, New Jobs and infrastructure. For that, he needs promotion of that house. It’s a beautiful place near the forest and river. New England is an attractive spot for tourists. We have also heard rumors this house is a real challenge for realtors. It makes sense for him to use pr for the house promotion. It seems like he is collaborating with local authorities to promote his hometown and if I remember correctly he has also promoted local Museum in the past.
I think the reason why the pr push for the rs and the house was massive in the month of May, might be because of the upcoming strike, Scott’s promotion, his shooting in Hawaii and AD deadlines. We know actors can’t promote themselves in the strike but fans can do. If they are able to create chatter about them and their movies, gossip mags pick it up.
Now the question arises why this rs has been used and why the engagement rumors. Tbh AD is more for couples than single. Most celeb couples promote their homes through AD. Also, the massive attention that a rumored engagement can bring to his house is more than if he only promoted it himself. If you notice the house info came into the fandom after the announcement of this rs and not before although the house has been bought in 2018.
Another question that arises is why use the fandom. Tbh teams have used the fandom right from the start to promote this rs. Mags took gossip from the fans and then started to run articles about Chris and Alba. Alba was nobody. They used third parties that create the illusion of a real rs. Alba was given free publicity in the States using his fandom. That is exactly what actually happens in PR rs.
If we notice MTRB was dropped info about upcoming pr content like the pottery video to make MTRB believe the info. Then the engagement info was dropped. It seems like pure manipulation. No idea if it was MTRB’s initiative or sources’ tactic to give teasers to gain trust from fans in order to convince them the rs is real. MTRB informed about upcoming Chris content in advance then the pottery video came out and fans believed MTRB's info was real and truthful.
A few other interesting things that I have noticed. If you notice the Conde Nast mention, it seems like someone from the journalist team might have also used the fandom to create chatter for upcoming content and bring in clicks. Let’s look at which mags come under the Conde Nast group and Hearst as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we see, Cosmopolitan and House beautiful, both mags published about a rumored engagement and also the new house. Vogue and AD comes under Conde Nast. Vogue promoted Alba for PFW. I initially thought it was impossible that someone from the office of these media groups drop would info to fans but now it actually makes sense. Fans are always used for publicity. It again proves how this pr rs has been used for pr and how things have been done in advance and also how hints were dropped for the fanbase to create gossip.
Architectural Digest is a great way for celebs for promotion. Even movies are promoted through AD as we saw for Barbie. For AD, celebs’ homes are a great attraction too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicRelations/comments/ja8hch/how_is_architectural_digest_able_to_get_so_many/
- https://www.laineygossip.com/in-absolutely-brilliant-marketing-move-margot-robbie-takes-architectural-digest-on-tour-barbie-dreamhouse
Now about if Alba’s name or engagement would be mentioned in the AD article. From the posts on MTRB and DM it seems like they wouldn’t. First, the info was dropped for AD to be revealed in June but now the date has been pushed to September. If you notice DM mentioned a Fall wedding and there have been other deliberate drops about a Fall Wedding as well. If we look at the chronology, it actually now makes sense why the bits and pieces were dropped to create a narrative about a Fall wedding if they are after getting fans interested in the AD feature for Carlisle House in September. Fans would check it out because they are anxious and intrigued. House Beautiful mentioned a DM podcast about their engagement. AD doesn’t seem to be a gossip mag so seems like the reason why Alba or engagement wouldn’t be mentioned. Seems like it will be strictly about his house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing that is noticeable is MTRB was informed about AD feature being published in Summer. There have been rumors about a Summer wedding also. The point here is to see, there is a link btw feature dates and wedding dates. Initially, AD was supposed to be released in June and the wedding is supposed to happen in summer.
Then MTRB got updated about the feature date. It was shifted for September AD release and DM informed about the wedding in the fall.
What is interesting is there is asynchronicity with the info drops between the wedding and the AD feature.  It seems the info was dropped by different people who were not coordinated.
All of this shows how wedding rumors have been used for the promotion of the Carlisle house. If there was a real wedding would the info be synchronized with the AD feature? And will DM or a blog would be used like this? Real weddings don’t need to have the date around an AD feature or the date doesn’t get postponed accordingly with the date of the release of the AD feature.
As for the question of why DM or the said blog have been used, like it or not but DM has a lot of viewers and MTRB is the oldest and the most reliable blog and is read by fans from all platforms including LSA, IG and Twitter. I would also like to make a request that as you can see the MTRB has been dropped info and they are just sharing what they get so let’s not throw hate their way. We can certainly disagree with the info but harassing or sending the Mods hateful msgs is not okay at all.
IMO, neither BUA nor an engagement/wedding is coming. These rumors have been set up to achieve certain aims which is always the main objective of the PR rs.

I don't know how to talk about Michael Nesmith in the past tense.
When someone is so alive in your memory, they tend to stay that way. When someone like Michael Nesmith makes an impression, it never really goes away. I can still see the outline of him, the defined edges of everything that made Nez who he is.
Michael Nesmith and I became friends in 2011. We first spoke in Videoranch, but the conversation soon moved to email and then Skype, which he discovered shortly after. There are few things more surreal than coming home to a "missed call" and voicemail message on Skype from Michael Nesmith, but for the next several months, it was an almost regular occurrence.
"Amy, it's Nez."
He started each one the same, that familiar Texas twang ringing out over my computer speakers. Once, he called with his mouth full, asking me if I'd have lunch with him. Another time was to tell me he'd spoken to novelist Jane Smiley and told her about me, told her I'd been asked to speak at the United Nations, and told her how he and I had met.
Michael Nesmith and I met because of Monkees fan fiction.
That wasn't what he called it, of course. Everything had to be parsed through his own brand of Nezism, which meant that the second thing Michael Nesmith ever said to me was, "So, tell me about this fan porn."
And I did. Because no matter how weird it is, when Nez asks you something, you answer.
We met in person in 2013, when he started solo touring again. I still remember the first time, in Somerville, Massachusetts with @lynseymoon. Meeting Nez wasn't at all what I expected. I remember my first glimpse of him as we walked down the stairs to the dressing room area, shuffling back and forth with his hands in his pockets. He was so soft-spoken, quietly thoughtful but never cold, and so very hilarious. He was happy to see us, chattering away and cracking jokes until his then-assistant told him it was time to go.
Until I saw him at the next show, and we picked up right where we left off.
You always knew where you stood with Nez, even if he never said it.
Flashes of other shows still stand out in my mind. The glint in Nez's eye on the tour bus after one show, motioning to his keyboard player, Boh Cooper, to fix me a drink. "I'd like one with gin," I said. "So I can say I went to a sophisticated party where I got a little drunk on gin." He responded with a look so pointed I couldn't help but laugh. We both did. Before I left, he asked me if I was okay to drive home. Always putting the "Papa" in "Papa Nez."
Another show, this time in New York. He introduced me to Elvis Costello, who had been in the audience and went to Nez's dressing room before I did. Nez held my hand after another show a few months later, taking hold of it in the theater dressing room and not letting go until we reached the parking lot. That became a theme of our friendship, for some reason. Nez holding my hands, or taking my hand without me remotely expecting it.
He was always looking for connection, it seemed. Always reaching out. Wanting someone to listen.
Someone very wise once told me, "The Truth is the Truth is the Truth. It is immutable. It is unchanging."
The truth was often a strange place to be with Nez, but that was where we found ourselves, through countless conversations about sex and metaphysics and religion and life. He spoke with such curiosity and wonder and humor in his trademark deadpan style. He laid down threads of conversation and urged me to follow, and as confusing as it could sometimes be, I always tried, because he believed I could.
Nez and I believed in each other. Because that's what friends do.
The last time I saw Michael Nesmith was (strangely) also in Somerville. He'd barely begun to recover from his heart surgery but was somehow out on the road, and Lynsey and I were again there, standing in the theatre lobby, the blue neon light flickering over the concession stand behind us. His on-the-road assistant, Robin, brought him by us on his way to a post show meet-and-greet.
There wasn't time to talk, but Nez still stopped when he saw us. It was only when he stopped that I saw the sadness in his eyes, the distant glassiness so far removed from how he was when I'd met him there five years earlier. He waved to us as if from behind a wall, an invisible barrier that had been put between him and us without any of us wanting it. But just before he turned away to walk into the theater, it happened.
Nez took my hand again. He squeezed it. And I didn't want to let go.
When Nez died last year, NP’s feeds were inundated with posts about the news. Articles and pictures and stories from every media outlet in the world, for days on end. The memorials today are ever-present, on personal pages and Monkees groups alike.
But I don't want memorials. I don't want tributes.
I just want to see my friend again.
I'd like to hear him laugh. I'd like to feel him holding my hand, and see the twinkle in his eye.
More than anything, I'd like him to be healthy, and happy. The kind of happy he was when I knew him, before the heartache of the last few years. Back when he told me that he was proud of me, and when he teased me about fan porn. When he was something like himself.
I sure do miss him...

I came out in 1986. Not ideal timing. I started working professionally in 1990 & was open about it. I worked with gay theatre companies doing gay plays. I was told, repeatedly, that being out would damage my career. I was told to keep it quiet. How it would ‘limit my chances’. 1
Don’t forget that back then, in many people’s minds, being gay & AIDS was synonymous. So it was always difficult. But I refused to listen. I know many people to this day who have chosen to remain quiet about their sexuality. Which is entirely their decision. It didn’t work 2.
..for me. Which was fine too. The Equality Shows by the, then, marvellous & supportive Stonewall, promised just that. Equality. Nothing more. Nothing less. I was invited as one of the very few out gay performers to high kick with The Tiller Girls at the Albert Hall. Along …3
..with Gambaccini, Somerville, O’Grady, Fry etc. All there for equality. For gay, lesbian & bi people. People who were persecuted or loathed for SAME SEX ATTRACTION. Fast forward. Equality, in law, achieved. There were & will always be those that actively despise us..4
..and nothing will change their minds. I was led to believe that I’d no longer be referred to “an openly gay actor” . I’d simply be known as “another actor”. Which was exactly what I hoped for. To be treated NO differently than anyone else. No preferential or patronising …5
..treatment. No excuses. No pandering. No special handling. My hope was that this eternal labelling would fade away. That it no longer would be an issue. That we’d get to a place where no one actually cared. Because then, & only then, could we lay claim to true equality…6
Well, I don’t mind admitting how wrong I was to assume that would be the natural outcome. Fast forward. Now, the labelling is out of all control. Kids are taught that perfectly normal oscillating feelings indicate something is wrong. Or that they’re special & unique. ..7.
Of course they’re going to swallow it hook line & sinker! They’re kids! Of course, they’re going to grow up thinking labelling is the way forward. Identifying ‘as’, instead of ‘with’. But it’s ONLY because it’s been force fed to them by adults who, frankly, should know better. 8
By imposing this insistence on distinguishing yourself through labels, you’ve grossly ADDED to the already complex & difficult time of youth & change. You’ve run with a relatively new & spurious ideology & given kids nothing but confusion, difficulties, mental health issues..9
..& hugely increased anxieties, leading to a leap in bullying & self harm. You’ve encouraged school, clubs, camps, universities & institutions to push this onto kids from year dot. And you NOW sit back & say, “What on earth is going on with young people? Why are some …10.
..so aggressive, so lacking in empathy, so narcissistic, so entitled! Whatever happened??” YOU. You happened. You thought you were doing that right thing. You followed the prevailing wind of the day. You bought the Pokémon, the Tamagotchi, the latest fad… As this trend…11.
..fades, & it will, as all trends do, what are you going to say? How will you explain? How will you disentangle yourselves from this man-made storm you participated in spreading? Please don’t let stubborn pride prevent you from attempting to undo the harm that’s been done 12
Don’t double-down when the evidence of your errors is staring you right in the face. You should have simply left the kids OUT OF IT. But that would have been impossible, wouldn’t it? Because without the kids, this ideology is f**ked…. …right?? /

Happy 110th Birthday Somerville Theatre
Today marks the 110th anniversary of one of my favorite movie theater / entertainment venue, the Somerville Theatre located in Davis Square (Somerville, MA). Hard to believe it opened in 1914!
I have a very special place for this movie theater. It has always had a classic movie house vibe to it no matter what you were seeing there or when. I went there a few times growing up, but when I was in college I went there periodically when my friend was going to Tufts nearby. When I moved back to Boston in 2012, I came to the cinema more often. Most notably for Independent Film Festival Boston screenings.
Tumblr media
me at Somerville Theatre for the premiere of Life on the V in 2014
In April 2014, my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at IFFBoston at Somerville Theatre in the main movie house and there were hundreds of fans lined around the block. It wasn't just a great audience response it was also possibly the greatest projection and sound I've ever experienced with one of my films. Just a few weeks after my screening the venue turned 100!
Tumblr media
my Life on the V movie poster (second to left) at the Somerville Theatre in Aug. 2015
That screening went so well that in August 2015 I had a special one-night screening at Somerville Theatre this time downstairs in one of the smaller cinemas. It was pretty packed considering it was a Thursday in late August.
Since then I have had a lot of great memories at Somerville Theatre including seeing the 2022 Nice, A Fest with bands upstairs at the Crystal Ballroom and then Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2 at Somerville Theatre for midnight screenings, last year going to see the premiere of The Holdovers with director Alexander Payne (Somerville Theatre was a location in the film and then I got to see the film in the cinema), the Pee-Wee's Big Adventure screening following by We 'R' All Pee-Wee celebration, and just this past week at IFFBoston I got to see my pal Mark Phinney's Fear of Flying (which filmed some scenes at Somerville Theatre and Crystal Ballroom and now I was seeing it in the cinema...a growing trend).

It is a legendary venue with incredible projection and sound, great programming, and also props to the concession stand too! Here's to 110 more!
