Goliath (/ɡəˈlaɪəθ/ gə-LY-əth)[a] is a Philistine warrior in the Book of Samuel. Descriptions of Goliath's immense stature vary among biblical sources, with the Masoretic Text describing him as 9 feet 9 inches (2.97 m) tall. Goliath issued a challenge to the Israelites, daring them to send forth a champion to engage him in single combat; he was ultimately defeated by the young shepherd David, employing a sling and stone as a weapon. The narrative signified King Saul's unfitness to rule, as Saul himself should have fought for Israel.

Modern scholars believe that the original slayer of Goliath may have been Elhanan, son of Jair, who features in 2 Samuel 21:19, in which Elhanan kills Goliath the Gittite, and that the authors of the Deuteronomic history changed the original text to credit the victory to the more famous character David.

The phrase "David and Goliath" has taken on a more popular meaning denoting an underdog situation, a contest wherein a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary

Goliath's name

Tell es-Safi, the biblical Gath and traditional home of Goliath, has been the subject of extensive excavations by Israel's Bar-Ilan University. The archaeologists have established that this was one of the largest of the Philistine cities until destroyed in the ninth century BC, an event from which it never recovered. The Tell es-Safi inscription, a potsherd discovered at the site, and reliably dated to between the tenth to mid-ninth centuries BC, is inscribed with the two names ʾLWT and WLT. While the names are not directly connected with the biblical Goliath (גלית‎, GLYT), they are etymologically related and demonstrate that the name fits with the context of the late tenth- to early ninth-century BC Philistine culture. The name "Goliath" itself is non-Semitic and has been linked with the Lydian king Alyattes, which also fits the Philistine context of the biblical Goliath story. A similar name, Uliat, is also attested in Carian inscriptions. Aren Maeir, director of the excavation, comments: "Here we have very nice evidence [that] the name Goliath appearing in the Bible in the context of the story of David and Goliath… is not some later literary creation."

Based on the southwest Anatolian onomastic considerations, Roger D. Woodard proposed *Walwatta as a reconstruction of the form ancestral to both Hebrew Goliath and Lydian Alyattes. In this case, the original meaning of Goliath's name would be "Lion-man," thus placing him within the realm of Indo-European warrior-beast mythology.

The Babylonian Talmud explains the name "Goliath, son of Gath" through a reference to his mother's promiscuity, based on the Aramaic גַּת (gat, winepress), as everyone threshed his mother like people do to grapes in a winepress (Sotah, 42b).

Elhanan, son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite (Hebrew: אֶלְחָנָן בֶּן־יַעְרֵי אֹרְגִים בֵּית הַלַּחְמִי‎ ʾElḥānān ben-Yaʿrē ʾŌrəgīm Bēṯ halLaḥmī) is a character in 2 Samuel 21:19, where he is credited with killing Goliath:

"There was another battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam."[1]

In 1 Chronicles 20:5, he is called Elhanan son of Jair (אֶלְחָנָן בֶּן־יָעִיר‎ ʾElḥānān ben-Yāʿīr), indicating that Jaare-oregim is a garbled corruption of the name Jair and the word for "beam" used in the verse (ʾōrəgīm). The passage in 2 Samuel 21:19 poses difficulties when compared with the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, leading scholars to conclude "that the attribution of Goliath's slaying to David may not be original,"  but rather "an elaboration and reworking of" an earlier Elhanan story, "attributing the victory to the better-known David.

Once again, I wish everyone happy holidays and a happy New Year 2024!

Sorry for this long break, I was tired the previous days and had to rest, but now I'm going back to where I left off. And yes, the holidays are not over, at least not in my country where these days Christmas and New Year are celebrated according to the old calendar (the Julian calendar which is 14 days behind the Gregorian calendar). The first drawing I drew is related to Della Duck and two versions, one from Ducktales 2017 and the other version is from the comics and the Quack Pack AU (Della is blonde in those comics) toasting the New Year with wine. Yes, I love both versions of the Della Duck, but I think both would go well together. However, they are both mothers to their sons, they have a brother, they are both pilots and astronauts and they travel in space. Admittedly, I did a little my own way. And this year is also special because it is the 30th anniversary of Della Duck's first appearance in comics and the 10th anniversary of her appearance in Dutch comics (80 jaar-80 Amazing Years) and the 5th anniversary of her first appearance in the Ducktales reboot (What Happened to Della Duck), so I can't forget her either, even though I have my objections to her, I still love her character.

The second drawing is a redraw from A Goofy Movie, where Donald is as Goofy and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie are as Max Goof. With the fact that I also used as a part redraw from Twitter, so I drew Huey looking at his hand like Patrick the starfish from SpongeBob, and that's a meme (for what reasons, I don't know). I definitely drew this because I would love to have a Donald Duck Movie like the Goofy Movie, only with Donald and his nephews and the Quack Pack version would be great for that, because there are a lot of similarities, at least for me. Of course, everyone is unhappy except Louie who is saddened by the bad relationship between his uncle and his brothers. stedelijk museum Alkmaar

(City Museum of Alkmaar) ‘’The starting point for anyone who wants to experience the history and art of Alkmaar’’

Location: Alkmaar, North Holland, The Netherlands Price: 13,50 / Students Free Duration: 1 - 2 hours Transport: Less than 10-minute walk from Alkmaar train station Language: Dutch, English Activities: Look at historic art, and learn about the fight of Alkmaar against the Spaniards. Date of visit: Wednesday 17th of May 2023 Expo at that time: Van Gogh, Cézanne, Le Fauconnier & de Bergense School.Website

Classy When I entered the museum, I put my bags and jacked in a locker and got a ticket. Then I got an audio tour and a man explained to me how the museum worked. Just like Het mauritshuis there where museum guards standing on every corner, even tho most paintings by famous artists here (like van Gogh) were copies and not original. The paintings from other painters were real. I sadly didn't take any pictures since my phone was dead, and I didn't have a charger with me. In the expo, the audio tour told the story of artists that were heavily inspired by van Gogh, which was not a good thing back in the day. The art schools thought his work was lazy with big paint strokes and not mixing in all the colors right.

450 jaar Alkmaars ontzet it has been exactly 450 years since the Siege of Alkmaar. Where Alkmaar won from the Spanish and started the end of the 80-year war. The 80-year war (1568 – 1648)  was started by religion, Spain kept taking in more land in the south and spreading Christianity. In the Netherlands, they believed in paganism and Norse mythology, later changed into rooms catholic by the Roman Empire. But now Christianity took over, which made a stronger divide between wealth, churches were really rich and people were really poor. De Beeldenstorm (Iconoclastic Fury) was the turning point in this and is seen as the start of the 80-year war. At the Beeldenstorm the Calvinists (major branch of Protestantism) went into churches and took down the riches, breaking statues, paintings, gold, and other things of worth. After the Spaniards heard from this disrespect for the religion they love so much, they came to ‘’safe the day and bring order’’. So they got 10,000 people executed for these deeds. They couldn't execute the prince of orange, but did take his belongings, including his son, back to Spain. This made everyone angry, and no one was on Spain's side anymore. Then a lot of fighting back and forth, even the French and English got in on it. And then 80 years later they made peace, however the Netherlands was not allowed to keep south Netherlands (now Belgium)

Because of Alkmaar's victory, other cities learned how to drive the Spaniards out. The whole basement of the museum is dedicated towards this war. In my opinion, this part of the museum was the most interesting, however, they were almost closing, so I felt rushed and couldn't take my time. 

Would I pay the price: I find the price reasonable, and it's great that students and anyone under 18 get to go for free. Would I revisit it: Not really, maybe I just don't have that connection to Alkmaar, but it did not interest me that much. Who do I recommend it to: Historical art enthusiasts, or people from Alkmaar

another fun biblical anecdote is that despite the story of David and Goliath being very well known the bible itself is very unclear as to how it happened. the most famous description is of course the one in 1 Samuel 17, which was redacted by the deuteronomistic historian and goes into detail about the duel and so on. but 2 Samuel 21:19 which was written earlier actually says “Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite” killed Goliath. it would be logical to conclude that Elhanan is another name of David as both are said to be from Bethlehem. but then 1 Chronicles 20:5 several centuries later (4th century vs 7th) kinda ruins that by claiming that “Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite” where Jaare-oregim seems to be a corruption of Jair and “oregim” (=beam, to refer to the spear) but Lahmi is a corruption of “Bethlehmite”, which in ancient hebrew would be “beit ha-lahmi” so there’s no great way to like, coordinate all of these. the KJV being what it is just cheats and has in 2 Samuel 21:19 that Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath, just as in Chronicles, for convenience, even though the original hebrew (and not the septuagint either but i didnt check) makes no mention of brothers

Twee vrouwen, een publicatie en een mantel

Door twee tentoonstellingen over art brut (outsider-kunst) en een boekpresentatie* moest ik denken aan dat vermaledijdede begrip 'innerlijke noodzaak', dat op kunstacademies zo vaak gebezigd wordt. Hoe iets dat zo diep wil zijn een frase is geworden. Kunstenaar Griet Menschaert legde tien jaar oude tekeningen voor aan een filosoof, een non-binaire grafisch vormgever en een mindfood-coach. Door de eenzame corona-periode leken de tekeningen een nieuwe betekenis op te roepen. Intiem zijn ze, die tekeningen, confronterend, verleidelijk, verhalend en vervreemdend. De filosoof las zijn tekst voor, terwijl zij haar lichaam inzette als haar eigen vleesgeworden tekeningen. Wat volgde was dat wij als publiek de intimiteit tussen die vier mensen en die van het boek in werden getrokken. Het was mooi, wankel en ongemakkelijk soms, op andere momenten bijna ontoegankelijk. Ik zag een directe parallel met haar tekeningen.

De presentatie vond in de avond plaats in Museum Dr. Guislain te Gent, een voormalig 'krankzinnigengesticht'. De deuren waren open, de gebouwen amper verlicht, de gangen leeg en kaal, slechts een enkel bordje verwees naar de presentatie. We liepen er wat verloren en onzeker rond, maar juist dat gevoel voedde misschien wel mijn ontvankelijkheid voor de rest van de avond. Boven was de tentoonstelling 'Mirror, mirror – Mode & De Psyche' **, met kostuums en textiele werken van psychiatrische patiënten en mode-ontwerpers, voor even opengesteld. Ik werd overweldigd door de werken zoals mij dat zelden overkomt op een tentoonstelling voor hedendaagse kunst. Het waren vooral de geborduurde werken van patiënten die me diep raakten.

Mijn eigen borduurwerk lijkt zo gecontroleerd en helder, maar wie minstens vijf uur per dag borduurt, het laatste wat gedaan wordt voor het slapen en het eerste nog voor het ontbijt, die kan een zekere obsessiviteit niet ontkennen en als de fase aangebroken is van het invullen van de lege plekken, dat is daar maar één woord voor: horror vacui – de angst voor de leegte, of in mijn geval, de lust de leegte te vullen (hetgeen misschien wel het zelfde is). Toen het niet goed met mij ging, werd het borduren mijn troost en houvast.

Op de tentoonstelling boog ik mij lang over een zwarte mantel, die een patchwork-voering had van reeds geborduurde stoffen in petit point. De maakster, die de mantel altijd bij zich droeg, borduurde en appliqueerde daar overheen, vaak grof en grillig. Ik voelde bijna het dwingende van dat maken, zonder welke het leven misschien wel onleefbaar was voor haar. Een jas, een ding als een nest, een bed, zo basaal als brood, water en vuur, een ding als een kind dat beschermd en gevoed moet worden. Vlak voor de avond begon gaf ik Griet een opgerold borduurwerkje met 'IK VOEL DE SNELHEID VAN MIJN ZIEL'. Ze kreeg een kleine schok bij het lezen van de woorden. Innerlijke noodzaak voelde ik, bij de vrouw van de mantel en bij haar.

ESPACES COMPOSITIONNELS ET MUSIQUE MULTIPLE

La musique combine dans le même temps composition et interprétation. Que ce soit à l’échelle de l’œuvre musicale ou de l’espace scénique, sa réception dépendra directement de cette combinaison. De fait, les éléments constituant l’espace scénique — surface architecturale, mapping, instruments — pourraient-ils permettent, par leur maîtrise et leur association, induire l’expérience musicale ?

Mon expérience à LA CAPSULA vaut la peine de vous être raconté. J’étais face à un bâtiment sur plusieurs étages, peut-être quatre, dans lesquels le public circulait par un escalier extérieur en colimaçon. L’événement se situé au rez-de-chaussée, c’était un lieu complètement ouvert, très haut de plafond et divisé par un mur blanc : l’espace de droite était dédié à la scène où les artistes étaient présents ; à gauche l’espace était dédié à l’échange et à la rencontre. Plusieurs musiciens étaient invités à performer ce soir là. Feldermelder, musicien expérimental Suisse, au sein du label encor_studio et ous.ooo, était programmé après Noémi Büchi et IOKOI. Après le passage de ces deux musiciennes, un entracte permettait l’installation de Manuel Oberholzer. Feldermelder, je le connaissais déjà. Ma première rencontre avec l’artiste avait eu lieu dans le cadre du festival SONICA à Ljubljana en septembre dernier.

Ce type de festival est généralement un moment d’écoute où nous sommes assis sur le sol. Comme étant invité à contempler. Dès lors, nous recevons la musique d’une manière qui diffère de celle d'un concert usuel. En tout cas, nous retransmettons la musique d’une autre manière. Cela car nous sommes davantage invité à intérioriser la musique plutôt qu’à l’extérioriser par le mouvement et la danse. Pour l’exprimer avec des termes ennuyeux et peu sensé, c’est une musique de réflexion.

Cette fois-ci, à Milan, la performance de Feldermelder était bien différente.

Je pense que cela venait du lieu, car il était lui aussi bien différent. Il était même opposé à celui dans lequel je me trouvais en Slovénie ; intimiste et clos, cette fois-ci, La Capsula était un large espace ouvert. Manuel Oberholzer jouait une musique délicate et cherchait à accompagner le spectateur dans son écoute. Je dirais avec certitude que cela était dû à l’espace. Tellement immense que le musicien tentait de nous rassembler. Pour nous guider, il avait besoin de nous chuchoter sa musique. À l’inverse lorsqu’il performait dans un lieu clos, à Ljubljana, sa musique était agressive ; il cherchait à la faire sortir des murs de ce petit espace.

Deux configurations différentes, le même artiste, les mêmes instruments, mais pourtant une musique différente. Dès lors, comment la configuration de l’espace scénique participe à la réception de l’œuvre musicale ? Bien que la musique soit le sujet principal de l’œuvre, l’attitude de l’artiste, l’espace, les instruments sont autant d’éléments qui participent à la performance et à sa réception. L’œuvre est finalement en ensemble pluriel. Par ailleurs, certains artistes abandonnent l’idée de composer l’espace réel et font appel à l’utopie. Il ne s’agit donc plus de combiner l’espace scénique et la musique, mais de créer un nouvel espace fictif par le biais du médium. C’est ce que le musicien Nicolás Jaar a cherché à évoquer dans son album Space is only Noise. Le compositeur est également à l’origine de la création du festival Urvakan situé à Dilijan en Arménie.

Cet événement combine le programme du Sound Lab — pratiques électroniques expérimentales permettant l’interaction entre les musiciens, les interprètes et les artistes sonores — et celui du Laboratoire d’architecture — redonner de l’intérêt à des lieux historiques et construire de nouveaux modes d’interaction avec eux — et marque le lien étroit qu’entretiennent espace compositionnel et musique multiple en terme d’expérience.

David Avenges the Gibeonites

1 Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David called upon the Lord. The Lord said, “There is blood guilt upon Saul and upon his house because he put the Gibeonites to death.”

2 So the king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not from the children of Israel. Instead they were a remnant of the Amorites. Although the children of Israel had made a pact with them, Saul attempted to destroy them in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah. 3 David said to the Gibeonites, “What must I do for you, and with what may I appease you that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?”

4 The Gibeonites said to him, “We have no concern for silver or gold from Saul or his household, nor is it for us to put any man in Israel to death.”

He said to them, “What are you saying I should do for you?”

5 They said to the king, “Regarding the man who put an end to us and planned to exterminate us from the entire territory of Israel, 6 let seven of his male descendants be handed over to us, and we will hang them before the Lord at Gibeah of Saul, the chosen one of the Lord.”

The King said, “I will hand them over.”

She did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the animals of the field by night. 11 When it was reported to David that which Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done, 12 David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh Gilead who had secretly taken them from the plaza in Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them the day the Philistines struck down Saul on Gilboa. 13 He brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there, and they gathered the bones of those who had been hanged.

14 They interred the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the land of Benjamin at Zela, in the tomb of Kish, his father. They did everything that the king commanded. After that God was entreated regarding the land.

15 Now once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ جَارِ السُّوءِ، وَمِنْ زَوْجٍ تُشَيِّبُنِي قَبْلَ الْمَشِيبِ، وَمِنْ وَلَدٍ يَكُونُ عَلَيَّ رِبًا، وَمِنْ مَالٍ يَكُونُ عَلَيَّ عَذَابًا، وَمِنْ خَلِيلٍ مَاكِرٍ عَيْنَهُ تَرَانِي وَقَلْبُهُ يَرْعَانِي إِنْ رَأَى حَسَنَةً دَفَنَهَا، وَإِذَا رَأَى سَيِّئَةً أَذَاعَهَا.

Translation

O Allah,I seek refuge in You from a bad neighbour, and from a wife who causes my hair to turn grey even before old age, and from a son who becomes a master over me, and from a wealth that turns into a torment upon me, and from a cunning companion, whose eyes are upon me and whose heart is scheming against me, if he were to see something good [from me], he would bury it and if he sees something bad [from me] he would spread it.

Transliteration

Allaahum-ma in-nee a‛oodhu bika min jaar-ris soo’, wa min zawj-in tu-shaiy-bunee qabl-lal ma-sheeb, wa min wa-la-din ya-koono ‘lai-ya rab-ba, wa min maal-lin ya-koono ‘alai-ya ‘adhaaba, wa min kha-leelin maa-kirin ‘aynuho ta-raa-nee wa qal-buho yar-‘aanee, in ra’aa ḥa-sana-tan dafana-haa wa idhaa ra’aa sai’a-tan adhaa‘ahaa.
