Goliath (/ɡəˈlaɪəθ/ gə-LY-əth)[a] is a Philistine warrior in the Book of Samuel. Descriptions of Goliath's immense stature vary among biblical sources, with the Masoretic Text describing him as 9 feet 9 inches (2.97 m) tall. Goliath issued a challenge to the Israelites, daring them to send forth a champion to engage him in single combat; he was ultimately defeated by the young shepherd David, employing a sling and stone as a weapon. The narrative signified King Saul's unfitness to rule, as Saul himself should have fought for Israel.
Modern scholars believe that the original slayer of Goliath may have been Elhanan, son of Jair, who features in 2 Samuel 21:19, in which Elhanan kills Goliath the Gittite, and that the authors of the Deuteronomic history changed the original text to credit the victory to the more famous character David.
The phrase "David and Goliath" has taken on a more popular meaning denoting an underdog situation, a contest wherein a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary

Goliath's name
Tell es-Safi, the biblical Gath and traditional home of Goliath, has been the subject of extensive excavations by Israel's Bar-Ilan University. The archaeologists have established that this was one of the largest of the Philistine cities until destroyed in the ninth century BC, an event from which it never recovered. The Tell es-Safi inscription, a potsherd discovered at the site, and reliably dated to between the tenth to mid-ninth centuries BC, is inscribed with the two names ʾLWT and WLT. While the names are not directly connected with the biblical Goliath (גלית‎, GLYT), they are etymologically related and demonstrate that the name fits with the context of the late tenth- to early ninth-century BC Philistine culture. The name "Goliath" itself is non-Semitic and has been linked with the Lydian king Alyattes, which also fits the Philistine context of the biblical Goliath story. A similar name, Uliat, is also attested in Carian inscriptions. Aren Maeir, director of the excavation, comments: "Here we have very nice evidence [that] the name Goliath appearing in the Bible in the context of the story of David and Goliath… is not some later literary creation."
Based on the southwest Anatolian onomastic considerations, Roger D. Woodard proposed *Walwatta as a reconstruction of the form ancestral to both Hebrew Goliath and Lydian Alyattes. In this case, the original meaning of Goliath's name would be "Lion-man," thus placing him within the realm of Indo-European warrior-beast mythology.
The Babylonian Talmud explains the name "Goliath, son of Gath" through a reference to his mother's promiscuity, based on the Aramaic גַּת (gat, winepress), as everyone threshed his mother like people do to grapes in a winepress (Sotah, 42b).
The name sometimes appears in English as Goliah

Elhanan, son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite (Hebrew: אֶלְחָנָן בֶּן־יַעְרֵי אֹרְגִים בֵּית הַלַּחְמִי‎ ʾElḥānān ben-Yaʿrē ʾŌrəgīm Bēṯ halLaḥmī) is a character in 2 Samuel 21:19, where he is credited with killing Goliath:
"There was another battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam."[1]
In 1 Chronicles 20:5, he is called Elhanan son of Jair (אֶלְחָנָן בֶּן־יָעִיר‎ ʾElḥānān ben-Yāʿīr), indicating that Jaare-oregim is a garbled corruption of the name Jair and the word for "beam" used in the verse (ʾōrəgīm). The passage in 2 Samuel 21:19 poses difficulties when compared with the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, leading scholars to conclude "that the attribution of Goliath's slaying to David may not be original,"  but rather "an elaboration and reworking of" an earlier Elhanan story, "attributing the victory to the better-known David.

I've shared clips of Rabbi Beck before but this is a great edit to show to people that throw the lazy BS label of antisemite at people who support Palestine. I wish everyone would listen and get at least some enlightenment about the reasons that the very concept of an Israeli State (and Zionism) contradicts followers of Judaism and the teachings in the Torah. Israeli propaganda counts on people to assume that Zionism & Judaism are interchangeable.
If you'd like to watch the whole conversation it's on YouTube here:

my point isn’t that the the bible is “false” to be clear, i certainly don’t believe in biblical literalism and neither should you but it has these sorts of contradictions you’d expect in multiple historical documents written in different times by different people about the same event. and it’s interesting to untangle!

lol @ that israeli academic talking about how “newer academics will prosper if this boycott continues?” like if you care so much, maybe don’t be a zionist academic? maybe be outspoken? why would anyone boycott an outspoken anti-zionist academic who is doing right by the marginalised by using their voices to speak up for the truth?
you don’t see people like nurit peled-elhanan, miko peled, yoav litvin, ilan pappe, avi schlaim, etc wail about a zionist academic boycott 🤷‍♀️ first world problems istg. people are dying, academic institutions have been destroyed, respected academic and poets have been specifically threatened, targeted, and killed. who tf cares about your career built on fallacies, racial supremacy, historical revisionism, and settler-colonial justification? even you shouldn’t care. the fact that you’re saying stuff like this shows you’re part of the problem.
Ilan pappe regularly talks about how he was run out of Israel for literally just publishing the truth about the Nakba and none of his fellow Israeli academics stood up for him. He says his picture was put on TV and they encouraged violence against him and his family.
Israeli academics are literally the most complicit in all of this. They obfuscate and they make up facts about Israeli history to the point where the truth is a threat to them. So i have a special disdain for Israeli academics and people who go to Israel to study unless with the explicit purpose of going into Israeli state archives to expose their government records of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. Otherwise, no, I don't trust you or any sort of resource that comes from Israeli academia (which is overwhelmingly liberal zionist).

Daily update post:
The announcements about soldiers killed in Gaza keep coming, and funerals in some military cemeteries have to, once again, be queued.
There were a lot of financial question marks floating around before, at one point it was stated that over 50% of business in Israel suffered over 50% income loss. Today it seems that it's pretty much official, Israel is headed towards a financial crisis caused by a war that it did not start.
Rockets continue to hit cities, houses, and streets in Israel. Hamas fires from the south, but it has also reached by now Israel's east and north. To just give you an idea of what a rocket like this means, here's one that fell in the sea. The police was called to the scene, to blow it up in a controlled way. This is what that looked like, take note of how high the impact reaches:
Today, footage was released from the body cam of a policeman arriving at the scene of the peace party on Oct 7, where over 270 people were murdered. It's terrifying hearing his voice, as he reports the first body, the second, the fifth, turns a corner, find more bodies, looks to the stage and reports on the radio everyone there is dead, looks to the bar and reports the same, and you can hear the growing distress in his voice as he starts screaming, "Is there anyone here who is alive!?"
Hezbollah's leader gave a speech yesterday, in which he basically threw Hamas under the bus. He claimed he basically knew nothing of what Hamas was about to do on Oct 7, and also implied Hezbollah, while it will continue to attack on Israel's northern border, it will not do so on a scale that will force Israel to act with full force in Lebanon.
Israel has turned to the Parks and Nature Authority for help to locate the bodies of people still missing since Oct 7. Since Israel is a station for many birds migrating twice every year between Europe and Africa, there are many birds of prey that are tracked through transmitters placed around their legs. Since they feed off corpses, following their location in the areas hit by Hamas during the massacre helped retrieve bodies that were in more isolated natural locations (like the Be'eri Forest). The link is in Hebrew, but I'm adding it, because this seems to out there, that I thought verification might be needed. This is our new reality.
An American official confirmed that Hamas tried to smuggle some of its people out of Gaza together with the wounded and foreign nationals that were allowed to cross into Egypt.
This is Elhanan Klein, 35 years old. Last year he stopped a Palestinian terrorist, saving lives. He's the Israeli murdered in the independent terrorist attack yesterday.

Rabbi Elhanan Beck has lived outside of Israel since he was three years old, this is despite the fact that his family lineage in what he calls “Palestine” goes back seven generations.
Beck stands with what he says are the vast majority of Orthodox Jews who strongly oppose Israel.
Their reason: The Jewish religious principle that Jews need to live in exile until the “peaceful” arrival of the messiah, and because of the “oppression” and “brutality” that Israel is built upon.

another fun biblical anecdote is that despite the story of David and Goliath being very well known the bible itself is very unclear as to how it happened. the most famous description is of course the one in 1 Samuel 17, which was redacted by the deuteronomistic historian and goes into detail about the duel and so on. but 2 Samuel 21:19 which was written earlier actually says “Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite” killed Goliath. it would be logical to conclude that Elhanan is another name of David as both are said to be from Bethlehem. but then 1 Chronicles 20:5 several centuries later (4th century vs 7th) kinda ruins that by claiming that “Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite” where Jaare-oregim seems to be a corruption of Jair and “oregim” (=beam, to refer to the spear) but Lahmi is a corruption of “Bethlehmite”, which in ancient hebrew would be “beit ha-lahmi” so there’s no great way to like, coordinate all of these. the KJV being what it is just cheats and has in 2 Samuel 21:19 that Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath, just as in Chronicles, for convenience, even though the original hebrew (and not the septuagint either but i didnt check) makes no mention of brothers
