The 1990s was a pivotal decade for geek culture, solidifying many of the trends and franchises that continue to influence pop culture today. Here's an exploration of the various facets of geekdom in the 90s:
Video Games
The 1990s were a golden era for video games, seeing the rise of iconic franchises and gaming consoles.
Consoles and Games:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Sega Genesis were at the forefront of the early 90s gaming scene. Classics like "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," "Super Mario World," and "Sonic the Hedgehog" became household names.
The mid-90s introduced the Sony PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. Games like "Final Fantasy VII," "Metal Gear Solid," "Super Mario 64," and "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" revolutionized the industry with their storytelling and 3D graphics.
PC Gaming:
The rise of PC gaming brought titles like "Doom," "Quake," "Warcraft," and "Starcraft," which laid the groundwork for modern first-person shooters and real-time strategy games.
The introduction of the CD-ROM allowed for more complex and graphically intense games, expanding the possibilities of game design.
Comic Books and Graphic Novels
The 90s was a transformative period for comics, marked by a combination of innovation and market upheavals.
Marvel and DC Comics:
Marvel experienced a surge in popularity with the introduction of new characters like Deadpool and the significant events like the "X-Men's Age of Apocalypse" and "Spider-Man's Clone Saga."
DC Comics shook the world with storylines such as "The Death of Superman" and "Batman: Knightfall."
Independent Publishers:
The formation of Image Comics by former Marvel artists brought a wave of creator-owned series like "Spawn," "The Savage Dragon," and "WildC.A.T.s."
Vertigo, an imprint of DC, produced critically acclaimed titles such as "Sandman" by Neil Gaiman and "Preacher" by Garth Ennis, pushing the boundaries of mature storytelling in comics.
Science Fiction and Fantasy
The 90s were a golden age for science fiction and fantasy, both in literature and on screen.
Television:
"Star Trek" had a strong presence with "The Next Generation" continuing its success, followed by "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager."
"The X-Files" became a cultural phenomenon, blending science fiction with horror and conspiracy theories.
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" redefined the fantasy genre on television, combining teenage drama with supernatural elements.
Movies:
Blockbuster franchises like "Jurassic Park," "The Matrix," and "Men in Black" showcased cutting-edge special effects and imaginative storytelling.
The re-release of the original "Star Wars" trilogy in special editions prepared the groundwork for the much-anticipated prequel trilogy.
Anime and Manga
The 90s saw the global explosion of anime and manga, making Japanese pop culture a mainstream phenomenon.
Anime:
Series like "Dragon Ball Z," "Sailor Moon," and "Pokémon" became immensely popular worldwide, introducing many to the world of anime.
Films by Studio Ghibli, such as "Princess Mononoke" and "My Neighbor Totoro," received critical acclaim and international recognition.
Manga:
Manga series like "Naruto," "One Piece," and "Berserk" began their runs, setting the stage for long-lasting popularity.
The publication of "Shonen Jump" in English brought many of these series to Western audiences.
Role-Playing Games (RPGs)
The 90s were a significant decade for tabletop RPGs, with many classic games being developed and popularized.
Dungeons & Dragons:
The release of the second edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) in 1989 carried through the 90s, with campaigns like "Planescape" and "Dark Sun" becoming fan favorites.
Other RPGs:
"Vampire: The Masquerade" by White Wolf Publishing introduced the World of Darkness, a setting that offered a dark, gothic-punk alternative to traditional fantasy RPGs.
The cyberpunk genre was well represented by games like "Shadowrun" and "Cyberpunk 2020," capturing the gritty, high-tech, low-life aesthetic.
Collectibles and Trading Card Games
The 90s witnessed the birth and explosion of collectible card games (CCGs), with "Magic: The Gathering" leading the charge.
Magic: The Gathering:
Created by Richard Garfield and released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, "Magic: The Gathering" became a groundbreaking and immensely popular game, sparking a new industry of collectible card games.
Pokémon:
The Pokémon Trading Card Game, released in 1996, quickly became a massive hit alongside the video games and TV series, contributing to the global Pokémon craze.
Internet and Technology
The rise of the internet in the 90s played a crucial role in shaping geek culture.
Early Internet Communities:
Bulletin board systems (BBS), forums, and newsgroups like Usenet allowed geeks to connect and share their interests in ways that were never before possible.
The creation of fan sites and the use of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) facilitated the growth of online communities dedicated to various fandoms.
Technology:
The proliferation of personal computers and the advent of the World Wide Web democratized access to information and entertainment, allowing geek culture to flourish and expand globally.
In conclusion, the 1990s were a transformative decade for geek culture, characterized by the rise of influential media, the advent of groundbreaking technology, and the growth of vibrant communities. The era laid the foundation for many of the trends and franchises that continue to shape geekdom today.

Excuse me for prying, but what exactly are your fandoms? 'cause for me, some of my fandoms include Sonic the Hedgehog, Twisted Wonderland, Genshin Impact and to an extent, Skylanders (most particularly because of the dragons, namely Spyro, Cynder, Sunburn, Echo, Camo, Whirlwind, Flashwing, Drobot, Blackout and Spotlight).
Tumblr media
Hello there!! It’s alright!! I would more than happy to talk about the fandoms I’m in! Hope you don’t mind the big clutter here underneath as I ramble on for a bit! Each are sorted into each category:
Major
Wandering Ones
Vtubers (they need their own category)
I tried to the best of my knowledge on ones I believe I participate (or lurk) the most in, so I hope this helps!! 😊
Tumblr media
Major Ones
In which my fandom knowledge, and experience in them are pretty large and have spent a lot of time in (whether that be lurking or not)!
Skylanders = Especially with the Swap Force & the Dragons!!! One of the major fandoms I’ve been in since late elementary school, so it’s technically a childhood classic! I actually have Swap Force (only the starter pack ;w;) and Imaginators (along with the Boom Bloom pack & Crash Bandicoot pack) in my home that I play with my little sibling!! I also played Giants at a neighbour-friends house too!! Also one of the two fandoms I did for the inktober (most of it)!!
Twisted Wonderland = A mobile game I found since late 2020!!! Back when only the first 5 chapters were out in the JP server and part of the watching/reading translations! Preordered the EN game as soon as it’s announced too!! Right now I miss my dailies cause work and player burnout ;w; (I also need to catch up the story from the second part of Boom 6; Generally prefer the fan translations more since I’m more used due to being a watching a lot back before EN server was announced)
Dr. Stone = Major fan of the anime and picked up some of the manga and the later chapters at the local library I live nearby! I still need to catch up first and second half with Season 3!! In my words, a fun and (mostly accurate) educational sci-fi anime!! Reminds me of some of the edutainment kids shows I watched as a kid!!
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle = One of the few animes I was interested from the clips I saw during quarantine! During late July of this year, I had even motivation and time to watch the whole anime!!! A really comfy and lighthearted comedy I recommend! Also read a few manga I spotted at the library and discovered that she has other outfit jobs/classes in between chapters (Plus Princess’s design and outfits is S-tier!!!)
Monster High = Another childhood classic of mine (as I watched a lot of the episodes and movies on YouTube)! While I’m mainly a fan of Gen 1 since it was apart of my childhood, I’m open and happy seeing the other generations on my feed! :D
Ever After High = Another childhood classic!! Been around since the beginning I believe!! Really loved the aesthetic, clothes, characters and story in this one! I’m apart of the Rebels!
Crossovers / Crossover Friendships - LISTEN I MAY NOT BE KNOWLEDGEABLE IN ALL FANDOMS BUT I LOVE SEEING CROSSOVERS AND I WILL ABSORB ALL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHARACTERS AND LORE OF THE ONES I DONT KNOW TO MAKE IT GOOD 👌👌 (For instance, the Secret Trio)
Vtubers (Please check the last section)
Wandering Ones
Tumblr media
I wander into a lot of fandoms! So, basically these are some fandoms that I have some knowledge and experience in to be sufficient(?) in (take it with a grain with salt). Others are ones I do know (childhood classics, actual ones I finished, etc.)
Sky: Children of The Light (Sky Cotl) - Been around since Season of Sanctuary, though I stopped playing since Aurora (and some seasons before that) due to burnout
Penn Zero Part Time Hero
Rise of the Guardians
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K - Almost finished season 1 back in like the quarantine days… I’m procrastinating hard
Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja (RC9GN)
Obey Me!
Wild Kratts
Wordgirl
Tumblr media
Vtubers
Virtual YouTubers that use an avatar and do a variety of livestreaming content! Such as gaming, karaoke, zatsudans (chatting streams), art content, etc.
Note: If you are a new viewer and looking into them, please take your time to read the rules in their description box! If there isn’t any, either ask one of regular viewers from prechat (a chatroom made before the livestream starts where some fans can chill and chat as they wait until it starts) or probably on social media, or maybe some people you know that watch them (which is rare)!
Quick Legend:
✨ = Ones I watch the most, and are my oshi (fave)
🫡 = Means that they graduated. In vtuber terms, it means the person behind this avatar is no longer gonna be streaming or using that avatar anymore. It doesn’t mean that they are dead - they’re not using that avatar anymore and they can resume streaming (as long as it’s not their former avatar) As well as chatting with their friends and former co-workers offline.
Any other emojis are their oshi/fan marks! Usually to tell which vtuber you’re a fan of!
Also I tried hard to think who I watched the most too! I mostly support all of them group even tho I can’t watch everyone at the same time
✨Holostars EN - One of the main Vtubers I watch the most!!! (And probably the one that shows all the members since I watch at least a bit from anyone)
✨Regis Altare 🎇 - the one who reintroduced me back into Holostars back in Oct 2022 as well as introducing the EN branch! (From the HoloNiji Terraria collab with Alban Knox)
✨Axel Syrios ⛓️
Magni Dezmond 🧤 (🫡)
✨Vesper Noir 📗 (🫡)
Gavis Bettel 🎩
✨Machina X Flayon 🪫
✨ Banzoin Hakka 🔅
✨ Josuiji Shinri 🏹
✨Jurard T Rexford 🦖
✨Goldbullet 🦅
Octavio ♾️
✨Crimzon Ruze 💢
Holostars JP - How I was instantly pulled into the vtuber rabbit hole (and learn that timezones were a thing the hard way ;w;)
✨Kageyama Shien 🟣 - This one is the one that dragged me in through a clipper (a person who clips - and depending on the clipper, translates - a part in a livestream)! Funnily enough it was a Twst one, since I was looking for people reacting to it!
Aragami Oga 🐃
Yukoku Roberu 🍷
Nijisanji EN - The one who brought me back into the Vtuber Rabbit hole back in Sept 2022, right before my birthday

The R-Lore #4: The Writer
How it began
In 2008, a just turned 10 year old boy in the small European country Austria was bored during his class, where he thought about "What if Sonic was in our world?" and thus his mind started racing. With this thought, he started something that lasted for many years.
The invaders and the group
Sonic, Tails, and Eggman appeared outside of his classroom and after a short fight, Sonic and Tails ran off.
When the boy went to sleep at his home, he interacted with Sonic and Tails (who turned themselves into his plushies) and got the idea to protect the world from Eggman (and potentially other villains) as a group.
About two years later, the boy read the 4th(?) issue of "Sonic der Comic"("Sonic the Comic") and came across the short comic "Mr. T and the T-Force". After a short read, he got the idea to name his imaginary group "R-Force", after his first name "Roman".
Many adventures and the " end" of the group
After 4 years filled with imagined adventures of the "R-Force", Roman decided to put a nice end to his group after "defeating his evil Twin brother called 'Böser Roman'('Evil Roman')".
The big finale between the R-Force, now filled with characters from different cartoons and video games, versus the "X", an organization filled with villains from cartoons and led by "Böser Roman"(shrotened to "BR") ended when Roman graduated middle school
The start of "The Adventures of Roman"
One day in 2013, after going home from computer class, Roman got the idea to make an anime... in his head.
The anime turned into a mix of "Guy gets isekaied to an anime" and "What if guy got superhuman powers, he had his whole life". In that anime, "Roman Mayr"(yes, a self-insert) was turned into the protagonist with a special gimmick that gives him "god-like" powers. At first, that gimmick was unnamed but after having the gimmick "out of his body" it was named "Emerald Heart", based on its appearance of a Chaos Emerald from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
In another "episode", Roman replaced Yuzuru Otonashi (the male protagonist of the anime "Angel Beats") in his respected anime and during the story, his unnamed powers got the name "Scart Skills"(it would be actually "Guard Skills" but I misheard it in the anime as "Sguard Skils" and that turned into that name)
Many TAoR seasons later
Roman had a lot of fun to create his own anime in his head, but sadly the anime went much longer then expected... over 40 seasons with an unknown amount of episodes.
The second iteration
At one point, around the end of 2017/beginning of 2018, Roman decided to end his anime in a two-part movie. The first part is a "What happened after the final fight", where his grandson will find the girls from DDLC and learns about the R-Force(and everything that happened in those over 40 seasons), and the second, where his grandson has to face "Ruppet" who came into the original series after about 35 seasons.
After he imagined the two movies, Roman was still not satisfied to end it there. So he decided to make "TAoR 2.0", which consist of many MANY OVAs split into multiple timelines.
In one timeline, the R-Force became an intergalactic band who has to win a tournament to get the "Super Phantom Ruby"(the same Phantom Ruby from Sonic Forces, but much powerful to influence the whole universe), and in another, Ruppet became good but that triggered the destruction of the dimension and the main unit got kidnapped by the X a month before the dimension got extinct.
The third iteration
"TAoR Alternate" is Romans third version of his anime(and the current one), where in 2020(without COVID) he suddenly get visited by a succubus who he has to protect from the succubus hunter "Ruppet"(not the same Ruppet, he appeared later in the series) and then learn about his new heart. That version had not so many seasons, like the first one, but its timeline spans over one thousand years.
It started nearly the same as the first version, but many changes were made. For example, a new villain named "Kai"(the R-Force supercomputer "Ai" infected by Ruppets virus), "White"(he was actually always there since the first version... also he looks like Friagne from Shakugan no Shana but with the face of Sebastian from Black Butler... somehow), and lastly the destruction of Ruppet(he is now stored in a stone in his original dimension).
Currently, his successor "Mika"(with help of Charlotte Wilthsire, Scarlett Eyler, Henrietta "Anri" Warhol, and all nearly three thousand "Gods Hearts") has to face a new incarnation of BR, who has taken over hell and could be powerful enough, to eradicate the whole R-Force and the linage of the "Gods Heart".
The fourth iteration
Back in 2020, after looking for an artist and rigger for a new model, I needed to think of a background story for "him".
And that's when I decided to create this.
The fourth version of TAoR has started in January 2021 as an interactive experience. So, follow me as "The R-Man" and as "Ronika"(and also as Ruppet) in this version, where you have to either get R-Man back to his original dimension or let Ruppet loose onto this world.
More about that in the stream, that should've started by now.

Flawsome Truth
THIS CHAPTER CONTAINS A FLASHBACK. It is set in the past, and you will now all get to understand why those awful cliffhangers were a necessary part of this story ;) Feel free to gawk in the comments section if you wish, but I have many more plans for this story! I think I’m going to even continue it on past the movie plot line too! I love you all my darlings, thank you for your patience. Next update might come a little slower due to the whole corona virus thing. Stay safe!
Warnings - Flufffffffff
♡♡♡
It was a beautiful day in another world, far, far away from the one we know.
The sun was shining high in the sky, smiling down on the exotic loop-de-loops, flora, and fauna. Critters fluttered about the land, most of them average and just going about their days. But if you looked very closely and kept your eyelids peeled, you could see an electric blue blur zipping through the fields. Behind the blur, not too far away from its tail, was another blur, only it was an icy blue color, just a pinch away from being white.
Tumblr media
The two zipped throughout the island, and you could just barely hear a soft little tune coming from the electric ice blur as it raced after its friend.
Ah~, ah~. High and low, then high and low again. The song echoed softly over the hills, almost as if it were being intentionally silent, trying to suppress its full abilities of vocal range. The two balls of light zipped through the blades of grass, flying through loop-de-loops and racing past the echidnas until they finally burst through the door of a tiny little hit in the trees. They hit the very tall, very beautiful owl that had been sleeping on her perch with a start, and finally slowed down to a stop on the ground, revealing two hedgehogs. One was a bright electric blue with a set of the most dreamiest green eyes you had ever seen. He wore a pair of white gloves and some very worn out tennis shoes on his feet, an excited smile never leaving his face. His quills here spiky and brushed out of his face, but posed as a threat to anyone who got too close. The other one had a gorgeous icy blue coat on her. Her eyes were a bright e/c and her smile could make anyone fall in love. She had some of the softest quills anyone had ever seen, falling back onto her head in what any human would have mistaken as her hair. Two gold piercings were embedded on her left ear, and she sported the same pair of white gloves and a slightly smaller pair of shoes that the boy did.
They were very young, barely teenagers.
“Ha! I beat you again, N/n!” The blue hedgehog taunted, sauntering around in circles around his friend. She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, watching with close eyes as he walked around her.
“I’ll beat you one day, Sonic.” She spoke confidently.
The young Sonic stopped and stared at her for a moment. Eventually she grew uncomfortable under his stare, waiting for him to say something. Finally, he lowered his eyelids, a sly smirk crossing his lips. Her eyes widened. She was in trouble now.
“Oh, really?”
Y/n watched with fearful eyes as he advanced on her, like a cat stalking his prey. With every step he took, she took one back, her strong and confident facade crumbling until he finally sprang over to her. He grabbed her face surprisingly gently and pressed a kiss to her cheek. She let out a shriek, not being able to control the giggle that erupted from her as she pushed him away.
“Sonic!” She rubbed her cheek, attempting to get away from him but he was quick to grab her wrist, pulling her back into him where he kissed her other cheek again. She yelped again, both cheeks burning a bright red as his laughter filled the air.
“Stop it!” Y/n laughed. It wasn’t too long before Longclaw’s laughter mingled with theirs. The two young hedgehogs turned back to their mentor, not even noticing that they were still holding hands. The owl’s smile slowly fell and was replaced with a stern expression.
“You two need to be more careful, running around like that! What if someone had seen you?” She glanced from Sonic to Y/n. “Or heard you?”
“No one saw us,” Sonic dismissed. “And Y/n’s been working on keeping her vocal telekawhatever under wraps-”
“Telekinesis,” Y/n corrected, her pitchy voice sounded a bit congested. “But he’s right! I was barely even singing that loud! I’ve almost gotten to the point where I can hum and still have the same effect!” She smiled proudly. Longclaw had found Sonic and Y/n in two different places at two different times, both with their own set of insanely powerful and unique abilities. Sonic was born with incredible powers that granted him super speed in every aspect of his being that became supercharged with his emotions. Y/n was born with what Longclaw had identified as vocal telekinesis. She had abnormally strong vocal chords, so much so that whenever she sang, she could move whatever she focused on. So far they had only been able to help her carry herself as a booster in order to keep up with Sonic when she was running, but they had been able to get her to lift a flower or orange here and there.
“And besides, I wanted to bring you this,” Sonic shot the owl the most adorable smile you can imagine, whipping an exotic flower out from underneath his quills. A smile began to form under Longclaw’s beak as she leaned forward to take it. Something moved out of her peripheral vision.
“Get down!” She cried, leaping forward and sweeping the two hedgehogs into her wings, slamming the door shut with her back just as the echidna tribe shot at the door. Y/n and Sonic clutched on to one another in fear, Y/n burying her face inside of her friend’s chest in fear. He held her closer to his racing chest, glancing around frantically as the guilt began to set in. They had led them here. They weren’t careful enough. The one time that they weren’t cautious and were just trying to have a kind hearted race was the time that they got caught. Longclaw was quick to tuck the little hedgehog’s under her wing as she burst out the window, flying high up in the sky, determination set in her eyes to get her children away from the danger. Unfortunately, the echidnas had very good coordination, as they sank one of their arrows straight into her rib. She let out a cry in pain, crashing onto the ground, hidden behind some trees.
Y/n and Sonic tumbled out of her grasp, and once Sonic regained his balance, his first instinct was to grab onto Y/n. It was out of fear that if he wasn’t touching her that he might lose her to the ones that wanted their powers. Longclaw was quick to recover, ushering the two behind her as she pulled out a single bag with a handmade label on it reading “emergency.” Sonic and Y/n glanced worriedly at one another.
“Listen carefully you two,” she struggled for breath. “You both have powers unlike anything that I have ever seen. And that means that someone is always going to want them. The only way to stay safe is to stay hidden.” The two watched as she threw one of the golden rings, opening a portal to some strange, dark forest. Y/n’s heart began to race, tears beginning to form in her eyes as she realized just what exactly was going on here. “This land is far away from here, somewhere where you two will be safe. Stay with each other, combined you two will be safe.”
Sonic’s hand slowly found its way to Y/n’s, and this time she didn’t pull away. Longclaw handed the sack of rings to Sonic.
“But we don’t want to leave you!” He protested.
“You must-” Longclaw was interrupted by the sounds of yelling, the echidna tribe fresh on their trail. “If either of you are ever discovered, use one. Never stop running. Now go!” She used her wing to push the two towards the portal. With one last tearful glance at their foster mother, Sonic tugged Y/n with him through into the dark woods. They turned back just in time to see Longclaw spread her wings out before the echidnas, trying to protect them from view.
“Longclaw!” Y/n screamed, ripping her hand out of Sonic’s and racing towards the only mother she had ever known. Longclaw turned her head at the sound of the voice, a small smile lining her beak.
“Goodbye, Y/n.”
“NO!” She screamed, running into the portal just as it dissipated. She stumbled on her feet, crashing onto the ground. Sonic zipped over to his best friend and sat down on the ground next to her, the bag of rings still firmly grasped in his hand. His gaze met Y/n’s just as the dam broke and the tears began cascading down her face.
Tumblr media
“H-hey,” Sonic stuttered, not being used to seeing her cry. She sobbed, tilting her head towards the ground as her body naturally leaned in towards him. At such a young age, neither of them were having a very easy time processing that they were now completely and entirely on their own.
They only had each other now.
Sonic’s own emerald eyes filled with tears as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her into his chest, hoping she couldn’t sense how much it was racing. “It’ll be okay… we’ll figure it out.”
Her sobbing slowed a little at his words, wrapping her own arms around his torso and giving him a hug. They stayed like that for a very long time...
♡♡♡
It had taken quite a while for Sonic and Y/n to grow accustomed to their new home. Since they were barely used to having to fend for themselves, even with Y/n’s competencies and Sonic’s ability to see the light in every situation, it wasn’t too long before they got discovered on the first planet Longclaw had sent them to. So, they went to another one.
And another one…
And… another one.
Until they finally came to a stop at the one they were on now. It was some sort of water based planet, where the grass was blue and the weeping willow trees were made of suspended particles of h2o. It wasn’t exactly the best planet for the two to be living on in order to practice their powers (they were growing with every year that passed), but they made do with what they had. The two hedgehogs were now around eleven years old, and they had already taught themselves how to build a shelter, how to find food, do chores, and ultimately protect themselves during the night. For the first couple of weeks, they had slept in shifts to keep an eye out for any predators that might come breaking down their wooden door.
Maybe it was some PTSD from the echidna attack, but Y/n was the one who always had a horrible time sleeping, so she took most of the shifts. Out of “lack of materials”, Sonic had convinced Y/n that it would be easier for them to just share a bed, plus it made more room in their home to live. It was a bit uneasy at first, the tension in the air so thick that even a knife would have a difficult time cutting it. They had laid awake, just staring at each other until Y/n finally began to giggle and rolled onto her back. He did the same and by the morning light, they were in a tangle of limbs and leaf-sewn blankets. It turned out that Sonic moved quite a lot in his sleep, so when Y/n woke up with his arms wrapped securely around her, it was quite the pleasant surprise.
Honestly, to any other person that could have met these two, they would have easily mistaken them as a couple. From the way that even though they were opposite genders, they were able to work so perfectly. They switched on and off with cooking or finding food that they would eat for the night, and they helped each other train by imitating things that Longclaw used to say to them. Sometimes it helped them feel like she was still there…
But besides the whole sleeping thing and spending all of their time together, the second Y/n asked Sonic for something or even was just about to suggest that they do something, he was always entirely on board. She didn’t even have to finish her sentence in order for him to be on board. She was all that he had, and he was all that she had.
Secretly, Sonic just could never find it in him to say no to her. With those gorgeous, dreamy eyes and bright smile, the way that her laugh made his heart melt, she was just so-
Nope. Nope, nope, nope. He wasn’t in love with her. There was no possible way!
She wasn’t like his sister, of course not! Y/n was more like… the insanely pretty girl that he lived with. God damnit.
Even though Y/n tried to convince herself of the exact same thing, she couldn’t help but notice that she felt differently about Sonic than anyone else she had met. No matter how many hours she spent with him, she never got tired of it. Things were always interesting whenever they were together because they both had a knack for the unusual adventures. He was always showering her with compliments (even when she tried to reciprocate he would always just turn up the heat), and he was just so sweet to her. He wasn’t too bad to look at either, if you get what I mean ;)
As time progressed, the two grew closer, their bond knitting tighter together with every day. They had made some enemies along the way, and those enemies taught them that not every person is as good as they may seem. So they tried to stick to themselves as much as they could. It took a very long time for them to get over Longclaw as well, each day being a little bit harder to get through once the memory floated across their brains. But they knew that as long as they had each other, they would be okay.
They could run for as long as they wanted to.
But at least they’d never be alone.
♡♡♡
It was a rainy day when something horrible happened.
Sonic was at home, goofing off as he listened to some music playing through a set of water speakers he had stolen from someone by the ocean. He was deep in the music, creating his own dance moves as he went along, bobbing his head to the beat. It was only when the door to their home burst open and a very frazzled looking Y/n slammed it shut that he turned off the speakers.
“Hey, N/n,” he greeted, but his happiness slowly faded as he realized she was trembling. The ice blue hedgehog hadn’t moved from her position by the door, gloved hand still placed firmly on the doorknob as her eyes peered through the slight curtain covering the window next to the door. Her tail quivered like crazy and she was staying a lot quieter than normal. Sonic took the opportunity to slowly approach his friend, concern filling his eyes.
“Are you okay?”
The second the words left his lips, she whirled around to face him and that was when he realized why she had been facing the door. She was crying.
Tears streamed endlessly down her cheeks, her nose turning a bright red. Her eyes had grown puffy, proving that she had been crying long before just now, the e/c irises full of guilt and pure sadness. Sonic could feel his heart breaking in his chest as he instantly wrapped his arms around her.
“H-hey, what’s going on?” He stuttered, running a hand along the back of her head, stroking her hair-like quills back. After so many years of comforting one another, they had learned tricks to instantly make each other calm down. The stroking had a decent effect on her, but she still trembled in his arms as she tried to force out a coherent sentence.
“I-I didn’t m-mean-I didn’t kn-know they-following m-me…” She choked on the extra saliva in her mouth and sniffled, burying her face into Sonic’s warm chest until she could hear the steady beat of his heart. It calmed her to know that he was still here. He was safe.
Sonic did his best to process what little he could understand that was coming out of her mouth. “Did someone follow you?” Y/n slowly nodded her head, more tears gushing down her cheeks as she pulled away just enough to look him in the eyes.
“I-I’m so sorry, S-Sonic-” She was cut off by another sob wracking up her pipes. Even if he wanted to, Sonic could never be mad at her. He held her tighter against his chest as he himself glanced through the window. His heart stopped in his chest as he saw something move.
“It’s okay, N/n, this is what we have the rings for, remember?” He glanced over at the bag sitting snugly under the covers on their bed. “Besides, this is your first time getting us caught out of my, what? Four times?” His joke was able to successfully get her to crack a smile, her tears beginning to slow down thankfully. They still kept a firm grip on one another as Sonic began to maneuver them towards the bed in order to get the rings. Once Sonic had finally grabbed the bag out from under the blankets, they let go of one another as he pulled out one of the shiny, golden rings. He held it up and thought of the next planet on their list and-
Suddenly, the door slammed open.
Y/n’s scream was so shrill it could have shattered glass, the fear coursing through their veins. The figure standing before them was dressed entirely in black, a hood pulled over their face so that neither of them could tell who or what they were looking at. A horrible aura floated through the room.
Something was very wrong.
Sonic’s first instinct was to jump in front of Y/n and protect her, so that’s exactly what he did. Zipping in front of her in less than a second, he gently pushed the frightened hedgehog behind him and prepared to throw the ring again.
“Leave us alone!” He yelled, closing his eyes as he envisioned the next planet they needed to go to. Y/n’s hand slowly entertwined with his, refusing to let him go, when the form before them started to… laugh. It wasn’t one of those lighthearted laughs either, it was one in which you knew something bad was coming. The two hedgehogs inched closer together, their hearts pounding rapidly against their chests, noses twitching and bodies trembling as the adrenaline coursed through their veins. The sudden sound from the intruder had been exactly what they had needed in order to distract the two.
Something sharp was pricked into the side of Sonic’s neck. He let out a sharp hiss and quickly pulled out a dart. “W-what?” He began, the room around him already growing fuzzy.
“Sonic!” Y/n cried, wrapping her arms around his waist in an effort to keep him standing. The serum within it was very fast acting, as he crashed down onto the floor before her, groaning. She kneeled down before him, refusing to leave his side, and shook him rapidly, the tears now coming down her cheeks faster. She was more than able to protect herself, but she needed to know he was okay. “Please, stay with m-”
A dart sank its teeth into her neck.
“N-no,” she stuttered, yanking the dart out of her neck and forcing herself to try and stay awake. Unfortunately, the poison coursing through her veins was stronger than her will. Her world went dark as she fell on top of Sonic, unconscious.
♡♡♡
When Y/n finally came to, she couldn’t see anything.
She couldn’t move either. It was almost as if something had taken away her ability to move from her brain, leaving her limbs lifeless against the cold surface she was lying down on, belly up. Her eyelids felt heavy, like a dozen quarters were resting on top of each eye in order to keep them closed. She was surprisingly calm given the certain situations, her pulse beating as steadily as it would if she were asleep. But she did feel rather drowsy… perhaps it was from whatever was in that dart…
Dart… where was Sonic?
The panic instantly began to rise, the need to open her eyes becoming almost unbearable to ignore. But she could still hear.
“Alright,” she heard a voice murmur. Her mouth remained shut, unable to move that, either. The voice didn’t sound like anyone she had ever known, and she couldn’t tell if its owner was a boy or a girl. “End… his happiness…” The voice seemed to be fading in and out, like whoever it was was walking towards her and then walking away, presumably to another table of sorts. But ending whose happiness? “This serum will make him forget about her entirely. It’ll be like she never even existed.”
A slight tapping noise against something floated through the air, making Y/n’s frantic panicking come back full force. No.. No way… they weren’t talking about her and Sonic were they? They were going to make Sonic forget about her? But why? Why would they do that? Sonic was the only person she had!
She couldn’t lose him!
Y/n tried with all her might to scream at the top of her lungs, to move her legs or even to just open her eyes but they were all futile. It was as though she were dead, her body as limp as a paperweight. Tears threatened to spill down her eyes as the feeling of helplessness suffocated her. The silence that continued on for countless moments made her want to die wondering what was going on. She could just picture it in her mind, her worst fear: Sonic being injected with some kind of serum to make him forget about her, and then being tossed into a portal to some realm that she didn’t know how to get to.
She’d never see him again.
Minutes turned into hours as they laid there in that torture, wanting nothing more than to feel Sonic’s arms wrap around her. To hear his voice, to feel his heart beat against her ears… She didn’t have a purpose without him.
Footsteps suddenly sounded through the tense silence. Y/n’s body tensed, which brought a celebratory light on in her mind that she was actually able to move a little. The footsteps came closer to her and stopped right next to her head.
“Ah, Y/n the Hedgehog…” the voice chuckled darkly, sending shivers down her spine. “I’m going to make your life miserable.”
Venom seethed from their tone, and without any warning, four needles dug themselves into her arms and legs. They pierced into the flesh so furiously that she screamed in pain, not even the sedatives she had been under being able to stop the primal instinct to such torture. Whatever liquid it was raced through her veins, spreading the white hot pain like wildfire. It felt like something was forcing her limbs to stretch and become much longer and larger than they were meant to be. Like growing pains, but set on fire. With gasoline. The pain seemed to go on for hours until the world turned dark once more. She finally released her breath in the blackness, relieved that the pain was finally over. A sudden bright light pierced through the darkness, and in her haze, she reached towards it. Blinking her eyes in order to adjust to the brightness, trees filled her vision.
“Honey? Sweetie, can you hear me?” A woman with yellow hair tied up in a bun was leaning over her, a worried look across her face. Her form twitched in and out of Y/n’s vision as she tried to focus on her.
“H-huh?” Was she standing up or sitting down? What was that smell? Who was this lady? Where was she? Wait a minute… What was her name?
“Sweetie, can you tell me your name?”
“I think… I think it’s Y/n?”
“Okay, we’re going to get you to a hospital.”
Hospital? What was a hospital?
...Who am I?
♡♡♡
It was a slow day for Doctor Robotnik. He had been considering going back to college for about a trillionth time in order to gain yet another degree in something that he hadn’t already accomplished. Which was nothing. Do they even give you degrees for studying nothing?
He was resting in his home when one of his bots hovered over to him, dropping down his mail onto the coffee table before him. The main glanced down at the junk mail littering the table, but stopped at a very peculiar looking package. It was about the size of a small throw pillow he had once seen in JoAnns (no comment on why he was there), and there was a small letter taped to the top. He cautiously proceeded to swipe the letter off and opened it. The contents were even more peculiar.
Dear Dr. Robotnik,
Inside this box are two vials for two beings. You must make sure that they never remember or find them. If they consume their contents, the whole plot will be lost.
It wasn’t signed. He furrowed his brows, wondering if one of his stalkers had sent him more men’s lingerie again. The letters tended to be very misleading. But, throwing caution to the wind, he opened the box and lifted the lid, staring down at the contents. There were two vials, just like the note had said. One was an ice blue with the title Y/n on it. The other was a dehydrated yellow, with the name Sonic written across the label. Y/n and Sonic… seemed pretty normal compared to other things he had witnessed.
And then the blue one started to sing.

This immediately came out of my mind after I saw a post regarding the Sonic the Hedgehog movie cast consideration list:
Tumblr media
And it made me imagine if Justin Timberlake was eyed for the role of Tom Wachowski, it looked as if Branch’s voice actor was going to help Sonic in the new movie. But unfortunately, Timberlake won’t be in the film due to his involvement with his music career and Trolls World Tour (another film in 2020) and he and other actors considered for Tom were passed to James Marsden. It made me okay with that.
I made this edited picture above based on my observation to the list. The reason I did this is to make me wonder in my head that what if Sonic happens to visit Troll Village and encounter Branch, requesting if he can help him stop Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), only for Branch to reply that he needs to help Poppy defeat Queen Barb instead and Sonic had agreed his answer. This just nearly parallels the initial consideration of having Justin to the Sonic movie and is also because Sonic the Hedgehog and Trolls World Tour were to be released in year 2020.
Let me know your thoughts about this once you saw this. Comic loosely inspired by the one with Paul Rudd from @samanthasabila.

You wrote on twitter that you were too young to be published and did fool things you later regretted. I'm curious about those regrets - is there anything you'd be willing to elaborate on?
I do want to clarify I meant I personally was probably too young, and I wasn't a babe in arms when I was published--I was 24, which is an adult! S.E. Hinton was 18 when her first book was published and she arguably invented young adult fiction. Jennifer Lynn Barnes was a teenager when her first book was published and she's always been a genius rock star. Some people are married and having kids and doing great at their jobs at 24, but some people are in college, or learning the ropes of their jobs and full-time work life in general and messing up because it still feels unfamiliar. Most of us, me included, will be making messes until we die, though we can hope for better messes.
My regrets aren't super secret--I would've conducted myself differently online and offline. One thing I've said before: I wouldn't link up my real name and my fanfic identity the way I did back when. That means having your juvenilia out there and judged, and yourself judged in a very particular way! It is hard to sit in the doctor's office and ask him for written proof you have cancer, because the internet will accuse you of faking it. (Yes that did happen. That poor man's face was like, 'Girl, why do you not live your life right.') As I've said, I have an assistant-with-antis who filters my social media and email so I don't have to come upon hostile stuff, and I do wonder if there are ways to inspire less hostility.
But to be clear regarding that example, I think fandom is awesome in many ways, and it's valuable to say you wrote fanfiction, just don't get too specific. One of my most cherished facts about a (fancy, brilliant, very bestselling) writer friend is that she wrote Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction once. Many of my writer friends used to or still do write it! (Fanfic in general... I'm not outing a bunch of writers as avid Sonic fans...) And being open about my identity did mean I had some beautiful supportive readers from the jump, who were sweet to me and made friends with each other (Marmalade fish shoutout). I love that people connect over fiction, and that they connected over mine. My advice to others is to do it like Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, and be like 'yes I write it, yes the call is coming from inside the building, yes creative engaged people engage creatively in many ways, no you'll never know my online name!' And that's mostly how it's done these days--there are masses of fanfiction writers in TV, in movies, working as editors and agents in publishing, and who are writers, because people who are passionate about creativity are passionate about creativity in many ways. A decade ago and nobody was sure how it was going to go: I do think it went well generally, if uneasily for test balloons like me.
Overall, as regards regrets, if you're alive, you're making mistakes, and if you're growing, you're learning from them. Often the more you care, the more mistakes you make. There are some things only life experience can teach you, and I've seen people who came into writing with experience from being, for instance, lawyers which they were able to use in many ways, and there were times I wished I'd acquired experience or lost naivety in a job that wasn't my dream job. Sometimes I really didn't know what was going on, and later I was like 'Ohhh! Oh Lord.' I would say a few things I wish I'd known: How to draw boundaries like circles of salt that others couldn't cross. The personal and the professional are going to blur, but it's still important to try and differentiate them. How to pick your battles: recognise the unwinnable, find the most likely strategy for victory with the winnable ones. Know that people won't like you just because you're making life more convenient for them, so don't do it for that reason. OMG abide by contracts and make sure the contracts cover every eventuality. Learn the art of standing your ground calmly. (One day, I'll get it.)
But getting published at any age is complicated: I have one friend who was sure she was going to die after she got her publishing contract because it was her dream accomplished, and what was left? I have more life experience in my 30s, but I also had most of those years totally slain by cancer: my writing went off a cliff long before I was diagnosed, and then I couldn't write, and since then I've been scrambling. If I'd been published first at 30 I might have handled myself in style, but there definitely wouldn't have been two trilogies before the long pause. One very lovely, very talented lady who was first published in the same year I was died shortly after. You don't know what's coming: Margaret Mitchell was hit by a speeding drunk driver and we'll never know if rumours she planned to write a sequel to Gone with the Wind are true. The people whose first books were out in 2020 had a tough time, and I would've freaked out if I'd been in their position and am glad I didn't have a non-tie-in novel out--it was very strange to have two tie-ins out that year as it was! People were reading books in 2020, but it was harder for new books to get on their radar.
I didn't write the tweet to alarm anyone, or say there was a magical time it was best to be published at. Lots of amazing writers aren't published, are published feeling they're too young, are published feeling they're too old. I think my tweet was really to say, there's no precise right time, and no way to execute your dreams exactly right. I do look back on stuff and think, oh lord, me at 30 might have handled THAT better. I hope that I'll look back at me now from 50 and go, I'd crush the stuff that crushed her!
Are there things I would change, sure. But I probably would make different mistakes if it had all happened differently for me. Humans constantly torment ourselves imagining the magic way we could've got everything right, a task exactly nobody has accomplished. I've never lived a perfect life or written a perfect book, and I don't know anyone else who has. I'm really glad I was published, and really proud of all my books. If you've never done something you've regretted, how much have you done? Keep going.

Tag Fact #3 -  I’ve come to realize I’ve always been a fan artist more than I thought. so here is a timeline of influences that shaped my childhood to now. from nostalgic times, to sad changes, to great loss, to strange rises to fame and phases, to stepping stones and finally a laughing place. all the things that make up your favorite fan artist Tag.
1. Rayman (bumped into this in the year of 1999) was actually the first fandom (with crossovers) I bumped into when I was 9. although the internet wasn’t available at the time it was still fun to dwell in home amusements. I remember the storylines and the OC’s I made but they’re kind of embarrassing and it’s probably a good thing there was no internet. I’ve done fanart and comic crossovers of Rayman with Calvin and Hobbs and Nights Into Dreams, spinoffs of Sonic the Hedgehog OC’s, Yoshi with Pikachu, and the Pokemon/Digimon craze with OC’s and other Nintendo comic shorts. but the drawings and comics are long gone and disappeared in the garage in a backpack due to suspecting my sister’s dad accidentally throwing them away. years later towards the year 2018 (now 28), we decided to move to North Carolina and it was my chance to find them again. unfortunately the backpack was gone just like I suspected (my main stuff), but for some reason I found my Pokemon/Digimon fanart, a good batch of Super Mario drawings (vaguely remember doing these), my sister’s drawings and some other neighborhood kids’ drawings in a dirty box. I was partially happy I found something at least but it was the backpack I wanted the most. sometimes I regret not looking for the backpack (’cause I was too busy being a kid) but it’s alright, noone needs to see that shit anyway, ha ha. anyways, I recall being a fan of Rayman from 1999 ‘til 2002.
2. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (bumped into this in the year of 2003) my second fandom I bumped into when I was 12 going on 13. at the time, my sister and I both liked the Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise based on the Battle remake and ended up making our own secret fanart club that consisted of only us two members. she liked Sonic (and that was her boyfriend, ha ha) and I liked Knuckles (and he was my boyfriend, ha ha) and we were crazy in love about Shadow’s backstory. we listened to the game’s soundtracks as we drew fanart and comics after school and man, those were good times. however, as we grew older towards the year of 2005, we ended up having separate rooms and I believe it played a part in disconnecting on the same interest. then one day, I asked her why she wasn’t into Sonic anymore and she replied, “Because I grew up.” I was sad after that and slowly observed that she was influenced by the emo culture and the new friends she’s made. I was the only member of our little club for a little longer...but eventually I moved on too. I still have some surviving fanart we did together but it doesn’t mean shit anymore since she turned out to be an abusive mother from the last I’ve heard of her.
3. Gorillaz (bumped into this in the year of 2006). as the Sonic years were at its end, I first heard the song “Feel Good Inc” on Music Choice and seeing the first image of them as displayed on this post (except the fan-made background doesn’t count since I can’t find the original artwork). this was my third fandom and later had proper access to the internet to the website I still currently use called DeviantArt. at first I liked 2D but eventually fell for Murdoc and developed a spiritual connection towards the character as obviously seen in my old fanart and rare photos of my devotion shrines on Valentine’s Day and his birthday every year. for the longest time since being a permanent fan from 2006-2017 (11 1/2 years) I had no knowledge that it was a political propaganda band and other realizations I don’t want to talk about. I only followed them because it was a cartoon and not the bullshit behind the musical project. the world I’ve built and support for them for all those 11 1/2 years shattered the fuck out of me and I just wanted to be left alone to find myself again, somehow. activity stopped on all my profiles, the flow of fanart stopped since I now cringe from the fan service and felt I was used for my talent. I didn’t want to be reminded of it all so I took down all my Gorillaz fanart and archived them for old followers’ nostalgia but also in the hopes they’ll be forgotten in my timeline. I ceased to exist in the fandom for huge personal reasons but it’s best to not say why. I know for sure that the fandom wonders what happened but it’s none of their business. THE END.
4. Waluigi (although I knew he’s been around since 2000 during childhood, I took deep interest once I revisited the character again in the year of December 2013). as silly as this sounds, when I revisited him again, the character was so bizarre that I ended up staying up 3 nights and 3 days in a row just looking all over the internet on everything about him and the questionable “hush-hush” absence of a backstory. despite there being no backstory he slowly gained a cult following and in many ways it’s a good thing. however, since the early 2010′s tension has been building up between Nintendo and its fans about him starring in a main game but everyone hasn’t fully gotten it in their heads that it’s not gonna happen. as long as Nintendo is in control of that, the fandom will not win, I’m sorry to say. on the other hand, if it’s going to be this way, then that’s what fanart and comic projects are for. as for me, I am doing my very best to get my comic project “Waluigi Land” going. again, I apologize if it’s taking very long to get Chapter 2 going if you’ve been keeping track but aha moments need to develop before I start permanent drawing (since concepts, character design and storyline needed improvement badly). as of right now I am still a Waluigi fan and I will not quit on him.
5. Turbo from Wreck-It-Ralph (although it debuted in 2012, I watched the movie two years later into the year 2014). for some bizarro reason, I had an unhealthy obsession with this character to the point where I dressed up as him for Halloween 2014. only 2 fanarts of him and the Turbo Twins exist on my profiles, mainly because my mind was more focused on just ‘thinking about him’ or ‘being him’ rather than drawing physical drawings. luckily, this supposed alleged fandom didn’t last long a little after Halloween so I chalk it up as a very short phase. to this day I don’t know what has gotten over me about him. the only thing I can think of now is that I think it’s because the character had yellow eyes and teeth but I don’t know. now that I think of it, that little fucker was ugly as hell and I STILL don’t know what had gotten over me. one day, my brother mentioned what that was about, and I said to him, “I don’t wanna talk about it.”
6. Undertale (although it debuted in 2015, I later took interest in it in 2016). It was all about Sans and Papyrus. I couldn’t get enough of the skeleton bros. eventually Toriel and Mettaton EX became my favorites but it took a long time to draw more of all 4 of them because I had other important things to do in my life plus I was still waiting for the next Gorillaz album to revive my imaginative juices (or so I thought). I really want to have this as one of my frequent fandoms but I just don’t have time for it anymore. it’s still in the back of my head to want to draw them but at this point I still have other better interests to be in. and besides, I’m lazy just like Sans.
7. Cuphead (June 28th, 2017 was the official day I called quits on the British-based band Gorillaz due to the bullshit behind it. since that date I was lost, had no inspiration to look forward to and no cartoon guy to make me smile...but lo and behold of the same year, I took an interest in playing the game Cuphead and man...that shit was a frightening exaggerated metaphor for being on that one drug (forgot the name though) and having sex at the same time but man that was the best fun I’ve had in years. I mean, it’s like, enemies are just so happy to murder you and that scared the shit outta me. and the facial exaggeration?....I think I should stop, ha ha. anyways, the Moldenhauers saved my ass from spiraling down, they have no clue. anyways, eventually I became a permanent fan of their work so to ease the hurt and erase my past from the G-fandom I had to re-wire my brain into a different cartoon category that’s a rather more American, so anything Toon related like Roger Rabbit, Felix the Cat or another favorite that’s a western-based cartoon makes me feel better, especially my new man .......King Dice <3 <3<3<3. however, there was something about this new fandom category I still didn’t quite understand until the date March 14th, 2020. I finally understood what it was but I feel I shouldn’t bring it up. anyways, Cuphead and anything western or rubber hose is my last stop in inspiration for the remaining years of my life. many say never say never but I believe I’ve found my laughing place and that’s all that matters.

Cinema Club with Luke|| Mortal Kombat (2021)
Tumblr media
Video game movies. One of humanities greatest downfalls and what I hope to be its saviour. Video game movies have been, at this point, a tradition of disappointment. Serving only to dangle a proverbial set of keys in front of the faces of cinema-going children worldwide in order to rake in some cash and for the future generations to say ‘remember the Super Mario movie?’. But I believe a revolution is coming. A revolution so big they’ll have to make room in the history books. A revolution so momentous, society itself will need a mourning period for the life they’ve left behind. Video game movies are adapting, and Mortal Kombat (2021) is a mere stepping stone to discovering their true potential.
Releasing only weeks ago at the time of me typing this, Mortal Kombat is, in my opinion, the absolute definition of mediocrity. If aliens were to, hypothetically, come to this planet and ask ‘dear human, show me a film that embodies just good’. I would take that alien’s hand, saunter up to the counter and say ‘2 tickets for Mortal Kombat please’. But that is never necessarily a bad thing.
An important thing to understand on the subject of video game movies is the quality of them. When I think of video game movies, images of extreme dog droppings come to mind. A series of unfortunate mistakes, disgracing their source material and spitting upon the people who payed with their hard-earned money to go see approximately an hour and a half of poor dialogue, confusing at best casting choices and lets say subpar CGI.
But this film, this flashy, corporate film, is exactly the next step taken to seeing video game movies reach excellence. following ‘Detective Pikachu (2019)’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)’, two previous video game films that provide a fun, colourful experience that have been actively picking up the pieces and ruins that predecessors have left.
With that pretence out of the way, lets get onto the review!
Mortal Kombat is rated 15 (rated R for the Americans of you), and for good reason. The film treats us to sprinkled-out, fast-paced moments of gore. Moments truly reminiscent of the source material. A criticism that could be made of the film is how the fights have an almost ‘cheesy’ air to them, and while I couldn’t agree more, I think this is precisely where the film thrives.
The film follows Cole Young, a character brand new to the Mortal Kombat series. His birthmark is revealed to be an invitation of sorts to a realm-wide battle to the death. The film focuses on Earth’s greatest fighters and Outworld’s greatest fighters fighting for the rights to Earth, Outworld wanting to enslave all of Humanity.
My favourite character, and I imagine a lot of other viewer’s favourite character, is Kano. Being the Australian, bad-mouthing mercenary/comic-relief of the film, Kano proves to be easily the most entertaining character.
My biggest criticism of the film is the protagonist himself, Cole Young. It’s as if someone made a character out of cardboard. He might as well be a faceless, monotone device used only to carry the plot along. Oh wait. Not only is he already the dullest character I’ve had the displeasure of experiencing, but, (SPOILER WARNING AHEAD FROM HERE ON OUT) he gets what is quite frankly the most boring of all the abilities further into the film.
At the final fight of the film, Sub-zero against scorpion, it is revealed (to no ones surprise) that Cole, an orphan, is part of Scorpion’s bloodline. A perfect opportunity in my opinion for Cole to become Scorpion, not for the lazy, fan-service reintroduction of the Scorpion we saw die in Japan in the beginning on the film.
Aside from the glaring problems that surround the movie, Mortal Kombat is enjoyable, serviceable and an all-around good watch.
And for these reasons, ‘Mortal Kombat (2021) will be getting a 5.5/10 from me. Until next time, I’m Luke, and this has been Cinema Club.

2020 has certainly left us already crawling for next year, but I say we shouldn’t leave all the good things behind. Time for a lightning roundup, no holds barred! 3. 2.. 1…
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
I couldn’t help but describe this as “Baby’s First Fantasy Adventure” like The Dragon Prince. It looks good, colorful, imaginative enough, but nothing about the story or characters pushed me to watch past episode 3 because I’ve no doubt seen stuff like this before but more interesting. It’s a good watch no doubt, but hardly groundbreaking to me. (Grade: C+)
The Owl House
Now this was more my speed. I definitely enjoyed the various designs of monsters and average Boiling Isle citizens far more. Eda immediately became my favorite witch character. While it reminded me a little too much of Gravity Falls, I was honestly hooked for more than just it’s otherwise eye opening demonic aesthetics. (Grade: B+)
Dorohedoro
Now THIS is a post apocalyptic series I’ve been waiting for in a while. Q really put together a world worth checking out, seeing its nooks and crannies, while giving us characters worth exploring with at every angle. She especially does a great job manga-wise where the black and white makes the edgy details pop in a meaningful way. The anime itself is just as good. Brought down by some wonky action scenes and movements, but the blend of 2D and 3D worked better than the Beastars anime. (Grade: A)
Keep Your Hands Off the Eizouken!
Talked about it plenty of times before, but this is that series that just speaks for itself, manga and anime. Smooth pacing, no contrived drama bullshit, hardly leaves any loose ends, easily accessible for anyone. It's the DMC5 of anime, meaning it is the most 'anime' anime I've seen thus far. (Grade: A++)
Duncanville
Surprisingly not a wack family sitcom. The characters are what really sell the comedy, except for Duncan himself who’s not terrible but isn’t great as the star of the show, especially compared to his mom; and it’s weird cuz they share the same VA. Plus it’s actually well animated and stylized compared to the average Family Guy knockoff. It’s worth a check out in my book. (Grade: B)
Thundercats Roar
Oh wow, a nostalgia cartoon reboot that everyone will argue over but at the end of the day, is about as average as it gets. While I can appreciate the animation when it gets dynamic during its action scenes, I came out every episode remembering nothing and moving on. If I wanted a half hour centered around safe memes or forgettable punchlines, I would’ve subscribed to Jimmy Kimmel or ankle-beez by now. (Grade: C)
Harley Quinn series
This was a left fielder for me; the trailer gave a far different impression than expected. I can definitely appreciate how they treated not only Harley’s character, her relationship with Joker vs Ivy, but the rouge gallery of DC villains and heroes. What other DC product got me to love King Shark as much as this? Plus, Harley x Ivy are the OTP, but I appreciate them giving Kite Man some respect. (Grade: A-)
Birds of Prey
I didn’t mind the movie, but it lacked that dry punch that Harley’s series gave me. It was kinda the reason why I’ve seen people say Harley was becoming DC’s Deadpool type. even when Harley was a good star of the film. Didn’t help that Black Canary and Huntress were the only other characters I liked, and I don’t wanna get into the implicating homophobia. I want to say Sionis was great, but he doesn’t work when you have both the villain and protagonist be unhinged. All in all, I’ll give it the same score I gave Deadpool 1. (Grade: C+)
Dolittle (2020)
The movie’s climax was a long dragon fart and I wanted to die. (Grade: D)
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
A live action video game movie about an animated character. Let me put it like this: references and fanservice is not substance, taking place in the human populace does not help the escapism, reminding me that Olive Garden sucks ass is not funny, and only being half animated is cock and ball torture. If I don’t care for realism in my video games, this DOESN’T help. It has a couple good moments, but this is mostly unimaginative, by the book, and not worth going back to. Works as a Flash movie, I guess.  (Grade: C-)
Sonic Rebuilt
Sincerely the chad Sonic film of this year. Even when it’s a reanimated version of the 90s film, the creativity every artist applies for their respective scene brings better life to the original film like with Shrek Retold. Yeah, there’s live action segments in it, but it’s part of the gag not a crux of the film’s visuals. It isn’t fully original since they use the original’s voice work and music, but everyone involved gave a genuinely good spin on the pretty overlooked feature. Plus it has a Sonic that gets shit done and has the better voice. (Grade: A-)
Ishuzoku Reviewers
Kono anime wa igaito shinsendesu. Bōru o korogashi tsudzukeru hōhō o shitte imashita. Sore wa yoi owarai de, kesshite mumide wa arimasendeshita. Itsumo mitakatta ano etchina shirīzudeshita. (Grade: A-)
Meggy’s Destiny
The plot has its low points, but this is still an entertaining short film. The characters were what kept the ball rolling and the ending was that coup de gras on the main character’s overall story arc. (Grade: B+)
Trolls World Tour
This film works better than the first to me mainly because we can focus on Trolls and their musical world rather than the Bergens who didn’t offer much. The plot is simple, but it being a multi-genre musical kept me hooked. The finale especially was that cherry on top of this bouncy film. Also Poppy is still the best. (Grade: B+)
Glitch Techs
It stands to say Men in Black meets Captain N and Pixels works well as a premise for a show, and this certainly delivered by actually being ANIMATED. I’m sorry, but can corporations soon understand that premises and ideas that work better with animation stop trying to make it live action? Also, it brought Fanboy and Chum Chum back from the dead, and that is a worthwhile achievement. (Grade: A)
Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons
They’re honestly the same game from what I got to play. AC was a little more stressful than Doom, especially with managing my stalks, but they were both nonetheless an all around great time so they get the same score. (Grade: A)
Steven Universe Future
Had some shit episodes, had some delightfully fun episodes, and had a half shit/half delightful finale. Pretty on par for Steven Universe but I say it’s elevated above most of the original series with the grown Steven himself. Much as I wish his character was dealt with better, I was still invested in his story nonetheless even when the fixed perspective honestly fucked over most else in this series. It’s far better than season 5, not as good as seasons 1 & 2. So yeah, I liked it and I’m gonna miss this show. (Grade: B-)
Onward
The ending doesn’t make up for a pretty middle of the road film. If I wanted a film about familiar bonding in a goofy fantasy world, I could’ve just watched A Goofy Movie. The world feels creative enough, but it’s like Pixar has been losing their touch or mostly peaked when it comes to imaginative premises. I’m hoping Soul can bounce ‘em back cuz while this isn’t the worst, certainly didn’t feel like their best. (Grade: C+)
【AND THAT'S TIME!】
Well that’s all for the first quarter of 2020. Quite above average all around, certainly some worthwhile things to keep your busy while this pandemic is upon us, except Dolittle. Were there any that I missed? Probably. Let’s see where the 2nd quarter provides as we carry on into the Spring months.
Stay safe out there, and see you in June.

Thursday Thoughts: Setup, Payoff, Stakes, and Sonic
Let me get one thing out of the way: Sonic the Hedgehog is a weird movie. It is incredibly, pervasively weird, and I spent a large portion of the film thinking, “What the heck am I watching?”
This could be because I have zero familiarity with Sonic’s video games. My exposure to Sonic the Hedgehog before the 2020 movie included his cameos in Wreck-It Ralph, a couple rounds of Sega Superstars Tennis which gave me a lifelong fascination with NiGHTS, and one of those little McDonald’s handheld games in which we pushed the button to make the hedgehog jump.
Going into this movie, I knew that Sonic the Hedgehog is a very fast runner, that he collects rings, and that there is a villain named Eggman. That’s it. So it’s entirely possible that I missed a good 99% of the references, hence my first conclusion that this movie is phenomenally weird.
Here is my second conclusion:
You could use this movie to teach writing classes.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a story in any medium that was such a tight ship. Every single aspect of this film is set up quickly and effectively, and paid off in a way that makes perfect sense based on the previously established rules of the story world. Nothing comes out of nowhere. Once you accept the initial premise – that there is a blue hedgehog from another world who can run over three hundred miles per hour – everything follows naturally.
The first key set-up in this movie is that Sonic is a child. Depending on how old you assume he is in the opening flashback, he is at the most eighteen years old during the main plot. This immediately explains Sonic’s lack of impulse control, his active imagination, and his naïve sort of cockiness. He’s just a kid, and everyone else in the film is a human adult.
Another key set-up is that Sonic is lonely. The film is heavy-handed about this. Sonic is in hiding on Earth, and he can’t really interact or connect with anyone. Additionally, the film quickly links Sonic’s superpowers to his emotions regarding loneliness and attachment, and it maintains that connection throughout the story. The first time Sonic overloads, it’s when he realizes he is completely alone on the baseball diamond. The second time, it’s when he learns that Tom – a human he has become attached to – is planning on leaving Green Hills. The third and final power-up instigates when Tom finally calls Sonic his friend. At no point does anyone outright say that Sonic’s powers are boosted by these emotions. The film creates the association, and the power progression flows naturally from there, creating a climax that feels grounded in the rules that were quietly previously established.
There are lots of other aspects introduced early in the film which come into play later in a very neat and tidy way: the rings, the raccoons, Maddie’s job as a vet, the quill Tom found, the town’s tendency to call on Tom for little things, and even the mushroom world! There are no loose ends, and the result is a story that feels complete, with every scene feeling like the thing that must happen next rather than something that comes out of nowhere.
Sonic the Hedgehog can also be admired for its clear sense of stakes. In a worse film, it would be very easy to simply shrug off Sonic’s problems. So what if he’s being chased by the government – he’s literally the fastest being in the known universe, and he has magical rings that can go anywhere he thinks of, so how is this an obstacle to him? Why should he need Tom and Maddie’s help?
The film answers this question over and over again, giving Sonic reasonable obstacles that tie into aspects previously established about the world around him.
Sonic can’t just run away to another world – he’s about to, but then Tom’s raccoon problem and Maddie’s vet career combine into Tom accidentally shooting Sonic with a tranquilizer gun, causing him to not only temporarily lose his speed but also to lose the rings (which function exactly as we were told they would in an earlier scene).
Once Sonic gets his speed back, he can’t just run to San Francisco and get his rings back – because he is a child and has no idea how to get to San Francisco. He needs a human adult to take him there!
After the road trip begins, we not only learn more about Sonic’s skills, but also his limits. For all his speed, Sonic has no sense of aim (completely failing a game of darts) and no upper body strength (he can’t throw a punch to save his life). This makes Tom a necessary defender for Sonic against external threats, since he is a police officer who can throw a punch.
In the same scene that establishes these limits, we learn one of Sonic’s strengths: he can speed himself up to the point that the rest of the world stands still, allowing him to take control of a conflict in a casual, cocky manner. Again, in a worse film, this would make us wonder why Sonic needs anyone’s help and lower the stakes of the film.
However, the film turns Sonic’s cockiness against him. The second time Sonic enters one of these slow-motion sequences, in the middle of Sonic’s casual jog, Dr. Robotnik speeds up his ship (using the quill Tom found). Suddenly, the stakes are raised. Sonic’s expectations are broken; he has an obstacle he cannot defeat on his own and needs help. And, just like Sonic’s magic, this is not outright explained. It simply flows naturally from what we’ve seen to this point.
This film addresses a common problem writers face: how do you make an unrealistic world feel real and grounded?
The answer is setup and payoff. Create and establish rules, and follow them to their natural progression. Trust that the viewer is paying attention and give them something to think about.
We want stories to make sense – and a blue hedgehog with supersonic speed powers needing the help of adult human friends to save himself from a mad genius can make sense. All the scenes, all the objects, all the jokes we are introduced to provide the foundation for the rest of the film. Nothing comes from nowhere, and it feels great.

flawsome bandits pt. 21 ♡ sonic
Flawsome Deceptions
Part 21! Only 3 more chapters left, my darlings! I hope you enjoy! This is also being uploaded to Wattpad as well, if any of you are interested. Love you all, darlings!
Warnings - violence (not too bad though), and some angst near the end
♡♡♡
...and smashed it onto the ground.
Robotnik’s mouth dropped open in horror as he watched his creation sink into the ground, singeing the blades of grass beneath Y/n’s tennis shoes until they were no longer recognizable. It even began to eat away at the shards of glass next to it, and Y/n winced.
That could have been her insides.
“YES!” Sonic cried out in victory just before he got punched in the face by Metal Sonic. But at least his girlfriend - or ex girlfriend - was still alive.
“What the hell have you done?!” Robotnik screeched like a banshee, rising up out his seat and gasping in horror at his specialty made poison that was supposed to melt Y/n’s insides and was now instead melting the ground beneath their feet.
You see, the lion’s actual plan had been to deceive Y/n into thinking that he would let her friends go if she came with him. But being the actual VERY HAIRY buttho- I mean intelligent scientist that he is, his actual plan was never to leave her friends alone. He would take Y/n, kill her, then destroy her friends as well so that he has a bunch of weird alien animals to conduct his experiments on. But then he got an amazing idea (not really).
What if he made Y/n kill herself in front of her friends?
God, it was genius!
Seeing their friend kill herself would definitely put a damper on their strength, as the loss of their friend would be very debilitating. But they forgot one thing.
“I’m not a fucking idiot,” Y/n snarled, her fur beginning to tingle as her powers began to churn. She cracked a smirk. The zebra was back. “I think it’s time that we switch roles, don’t you think?”
Robotnik furrowed his brows, confused as to what she meant. She took this small window of opportunity, reeled her fist back, and punched him straight in the face.
“I’m not a zebra anymore! I’m a lion, you motherfucker!”
The impact was enough to send the man falling straight out of his drone and he collapsed onto the ground, a pathetic jumble of limbs and mustache hairs. He let out a groan in pain which soon turned into a snarl, and he quickly noticed that his controller was no longer in his grasp. This was a little bit of an issue because that controller was the one that he could use to power Metal Sonic, supercharge him, and shut him down. While he was distracted, Y/n quickly dove into the drone and snatched up the controller, staring down at the three buttons that blinked before her.
They were all the same color.
Damnit.
“You little bitch, WHY WON’T YOU LOVE ME?!” Two strong gloved hands wrapped around Y/n’s furry ankles and ripped her out of the drone. She let out a shrill scream as she went airborne momentarily, and thinking quick, she let out a low hum. Her body instantly responded, holding her up into the air so she was in a sort of trance. Shadow let out a low growl from the ground, his ruby irises flaming with heartbroken rage.
“Because you’re a creep!” She shouted down at him, and slammed her fist onto the first button on the controller. She glanced down at Metal Sonic, who was in the process of trying to kill the actual Sonic, only to find that it didn’t change anything. She grunted and pushed the one on the bottom.
The robot froze.
Sonic rolled on the ground and stood up, preparing to run off again as he watched the robot in confusion. The red eyes on the bot grew bold for a moment, and then… turned off. That was the off button. Y/n breathed a sigh of relief and lowered herself onto the ground. Unfortunately, her victory was short lived as Shadow tackled her to the burnt grass.
The icy blue hedgehog let out a shriek as she went collapsing onto the ground from his weight.
“Get off of me, you pervy walrus!” Y/n snarled, immediately trying to shove the dark hedgehog off of her. But he wasn’t ready to let go that easily. He latched his strong arms around her waist, and sent them tumbling onto the ground like a bad gymnastics performance. While they were distracted, Knuckles took this opportunity to slash the binds around Spirit and Tails, freeing them. The duo quickly bounded up, armed and ready to fight, only to find that the bot was already shut off. Sonic quickly sped over to the struggling hedgehogs only to narrowly miss a burning hot laser. He froze, gaze shooting up to meet that of a very pissed off Robotnik.
“What the hell, man?” Sonic snarled, throwing his hands out to the sides in exasperation. Robotnik simply shrugged, hitting some buttons on his gloves and turning the attention of his egg bots towards him, Knuckles, Spirit, and even Tails.
“Are you forgetting that I am being portrayed as the bad guy here? It’s my job to make your life a living hell.” Robotnik rolled his eyes like he was explaining this to a five year old. Sonic had lost most of his sense of humor upon witnessing the love of his life almost kill herself, and he frankly didn’t have much time to even throw in a good natured joke when he was trying to take out a bunch of robots while his friends did the same.
Meanwhile, Y/n had other problems.
Shadow kept trying to yank the remote control out of her hands, presumably to turn back on Metal Sonic so that he could kill them. But she wasn’t having it.
“Quit groping me!” She snarled between panted breaths as she countered all of his punches and smacks, clutching the remote tightly between her right fingers. She was in a very unfortunate position with him practically straddling her on the ground, eyes full of fire and rage as he tried to get the upper hand. But just as she had managed to land a punch to his face, she spotted something out of the corner of her eye that could prove useful.
Shadow’s gun.
♡♡♡
Spirit’s baseball bat collided with three of Robotnik’s bots, knocking them into the oak tree beside her almost instantaneously. She let out an exhale, but her eyes were already on high alert, searching for any more signs of danger around her. She had lost track of where Y/n had gone after witnessing her almost kill herself, and she was frankly feeling rather light headed. But that wasn’t important right now. The important thing was to get them all out of here safe.
And alive.
Tails, who was never really one for being on the front line in battle, timidly hid behind her legs while he watched with hearts in his eyes as she took out a bunch of the egg bots. The determination and the fire in her eyes… the way her hair swung about in her ponytail with her motions… She was beautiful.
Knuckles sidled up next to them after having taken out a bunch of the other bots as well, followed shortly after by the Blue Blur. Sonic let out a frustrated groan as another hoard of bots began to carreen their way towards them, lasers at the ready. Robotnik stood under the cover of his old drone not too far away from them, and it was then that Sonic hatched a plan.
“Guys, if we can get those controller gloves away from him, then maybe we can stop the drones long enough to get Y/n.” Amazing how even in the most dire of circumstances, Sonic’s first instinct was to find a way to make it to his beloved girlfriend.
Ex-girlfriend.
Gotta stop doing that.
Spirit and Knuckles immediately stepped up in front of Sonic and Tails, already beginning the process of punching and smashing the next line of robots. Even Tails was able to prevent some of the bots from getting too close by whacking them with his tails and with random sticks he was able to pick up on the ground. Using their amazing fighting skills as his que, Sonic sped through the darkness the trees gave him before coming to a stop just behind Robotnik. Thankfully, the man had been captivated by the fight as well, his eyes trained steadily on the fight as one hand controlled the bots and the other stroked his unwashed mustache hairs.
Disgusting, Sonic thought bitterly. He would make sure that this man would never harm another person again.
He slowly took two more steps forward, and the second Robotnik’s glove was within his view, Sonic ripped it off of his hand and slammed it against the ground with a rock. Robotnik let out a choked scream in surprise, cursing himself for being off his game and blaming it on Y/n’s hate filled punch, he turned only to hear the static sound of his precious controller being destroyed.
“NO!” He screeched like a little girl, not knowing how to defend himself in the absence of his beautiful bots. He dove towards the little blue hedgehog, seeming to have forgotten that Sonic was… well, Sonic. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!”
“I just saved my friends,” Sonic answered boldly, stomping on the controller again for good measure. When he watched the drones drop dead by Spirit, Tails, and Knuckles, he knew for sure that they were toast. Now just one more thing left to do.
Sonic slowly reached into his right glove and pulled out a tiny little object. It was small enough for Robotnik to not quite figure out just what it was, and it was only when Sonic held it up towards the burning flames in the trees that Robotnik understood.
A golden ring.
Robotnik, for the first time in his life, was speechless.
He could only watch as Sonic closed his eyes momentarily, then threw the ring onto the ground before him. Instantly, the ring began to glow and spin before opening up a portal to some other world. Robotnik recognized it as the Mushroom Planet at first, but this one looked a lot darker. More nutrient-starved. It would be impossible for Robotnik to try and get any supplies for his drones on a planet like that. Even when he was on the Mushroom Planet, at least he was able to find some watering holes and mushrooms that didn’t seem poisonous.
This was it.
“It’s all over isn’t it?” Robotnik asked dazily. Sonic wore a very rare expression. No ounce of mercy could be seen in his searing emerald orbs as he stared down at the pathetic man who used to be a mad scientist. He wasn’t planning on pushing Robotnik in. Robotnik was going to crawl in himself.
Like the pitiful excuse of a human that he was.
Robotnik glanced around at the burning vegetation and destroyed babies he had once cradled in his arms. The little beings that came out of his egg sack (see what I did there?) They were all destroyed. He had gone through so much trouble to come up with this beautiful plan, this beautiful robot, only to have it taken down within seconds by a couple of angry hedgehogs?
Maybe he should find another hobby.
Maybe Agent Stone had been right all those times he had tried to steer him down another path. Maybe he could find some other outlet for his personal problems that didn’t have to do with forcing his wants on other people and hurting them if they didn’t go with it straight away. Threatening people and making them try to kill themselves just because they were weak. Maybe if he had been a better person, then none of this would have happened. Maybe then he and Agent Stone could have been happy. Maybe then he could have been friends with the hedgehogs. Even though they were painfully annoying.
This was it. Robotnik was never a lion, was he? No. He had pretended to be a lion, always putting his bark before his bite. Always trying to use his smarts and his pride to trump character. He thought he was better than everyone else. And then he got punched in the face by a girl.
The true zebra surrendered.
“Well played, Sonic,” Robotnik had to commend the alien creature. Sonic’s eyes widened momentarily at the first comment he had ever received from this man. “Well played.”
And with that, Robotnik drug himself forward and fell through the portal.
♡♡♡
Shadow’s gun glinted in the dancing flames of the trees from his tool belt.
Y/n stared up into his angry red irises and immediately went limp. Shadow freezes momentarily, confused by her sudden actions. Why had she stopped fighting him? He enjoyed it when she fought him, it brought up some weird emotion of adrenaline and plea-
“Dumbass.”
Wait, what? Shadow felt a strange lightness on his waist. He glanced down only to hear the sound of a gun cocking.
“Shit.” He cursed, looking up to be met with a very shocking sight.
There Y/n lay beneath him, her teeth gritting as tears streamed down her glowing e/c orbs. Her hands were trembling as she held the gun to his head, trying her very hardest to fight against the debilitation that he put her under. He made her want to die just by looking at her, let alone touching her. And now she had to make him stop. He glanced to the side by her head and felt a draining sensation through his chest when he saw what used to be the remote controller for Metal Sonic. She must have found a way to smash it at some point.
But then he realized something.
“You’re a fool,” He scoffed, shaking his head. “A beautiful fool.”
Y/n didn’t respond, but the shift in her expression let him know that she heard him perfectly.
Wait.
No, she thought. This wouldn’t work. He isn’t afraid of the gun. He isn’t afraid of it because he knows that even if she wanted to, she might not be able to pull the trigger. No, his fear wasn’t of having a gun put to his chest. But what he was afraid of...
Y/n slowly turned the gun around in her hands until it was pressed up against her forehead.
She placed her finger over the trigger, and Shadow’s facade crumbled almost instantly. He wrapped his hands around hers, trying desperately to yank it away from her forehead. They were no longer physically fighting one another as he sat on top of her stomach, pinning her to the ground. No. The fight was now over the gun Y/n was pressing to her head. But even when Shadow tugged at it with all his might, it didn’t budge an inch. The glowing in Y/n’s eyes explained why.
But she wasn’t done yet.
“You did this to me.”
Shadow froze, staring straight into Y/n’s burning e/c eyes as they swirled with a tornado of emotions. Anger, hatred, betrayal, hurt, disgust.
Sadness.
“You did this to me, Shadow. You made me think that dying would be better than living on this earth. You hurt a perfectly good batch of people, all for what? For money? For something that you didn’t even understand. You hurt me, Shadow.”
Shadow’s hands fell limp by his sides, and if Y/n didn’t know any better, she could practically see his soul shatter through his eyes.
“You. Hurt. Me.”
Tumblr media
Shadow instantly began shaking his head, the last bit of denial still trying to claw its way to the surface.
“N-no, no, n-no, I-I love you, I-”
“You tried to make me kill myself. You. Hurt. Me.” With her final words, Shadow finally broke. Watching all the fire drain from his eyes, Y/n took the opportunity to smash the gun against the side of his head, knocking him out successfully. He slumped onto the ground in an unnatural position and Y/n finally heaved in a shaky breath. She pulled her shaking body up into a sitting position and stared down at the gun in her hands.
A tiny tear drop fell onto the trigger.
She had won.

Updated Ranking- 2020 Anime Year In Review
Punch Line- Completely unexpected, possibly the greatest anime of all time. The animation is good and the music is great, but the characters and story is what made me really love this show. It’s also very misleading holy crap they work hard to cover up the real meat of the show.
HaNaYaMaTa- A gorgeous anime with a bunch of great music and dancing.
Promare- 2d CGI hybrid with an amazing soundtrack and inspiring characters. (Still not as good as Kill la Kill though.)
The Helpful Fox Senko-San- Really really cute, probably the most feel-good anime ever made.
Laid Back-Camp- Absolutely incredible.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- Way exceeded my expectations.
No Game No Life Zero- No comment, it’s better if you go in with nothing.
Spirited Away- What did you expect?
Parasyte- Outstanding visuals and the best transformation of a character I have ever seen in any anime.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K- The best comedy anime I saw this year, the animation is a little stiff, but the characters make up for it.
Komi Can’t Communicate (Manga)- A very good read that I don’t think would work well as an anime imo.
No Game No Life- The greatest fictional world I have ever seen in anything ever. I couldn't imagine half the things the anime does.
Squid-Girl- Made me like squids.
Lupin III: The First- SEE! CGI IS COOL!
Hi Score Girl (Season 2)- Season one was pretty good, but a little underwhelming. Season 2 on the other hand is completely insane and is one of the best anime you can watch on Netflix right now holy crap.
BNA- Trigger has done it again, though some aspects hold it down for me.
Gargantia on the verdurous planet- Amazing Sci-Fi anime, Ledo is hot.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid- Really recommend this one.
Blue Exorcist (Kyoto Saga)- What a grand return!
Kohana Kitan- A beautiful anime with a whole lot of charm.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind- This… Is Requiem.
Dragon Quest: Your Story- Best video game movie, fight me.
Star vs. The Forces of Evil- Really good, had a lot of unexpected moments.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K: Reawakened- Not as good as original, though still pretty solid.
Steven Universe- Really good.
Steven Universe The Movie- Also really good.
HERO- What an outstanding film. The closest we will get to anime fighting in live-action.
House of Flying Daggers- Why isn't it house of “The” flying daggers? What the heck?
The Last Samurai- I didn't know that it was Tom Cruise until the very end.
In This Corner of the World- Really really incredible movie, highly recommended, will probably make you cry and feel sad though, so watch at your one risk.
Eromanga Sensei- Really really fun anime.
Gourmet Girl Graffiti- If you like food and cute girls, this is the anime for you. (Update after watching again, this was way better than I remember. I would probably put it much higher now)
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life- This anime is a sight to behold.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3.5: Battle in Egypt- There was only one reason you lost.
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable- My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato- Way better than I was expecting, really solid.
Sword Art Online Alicization: War of Underworld- Some of the best animation you can watch right now, with some stupid garbage mixed in.
Lupin The 3rd, Part 5- Pretty good, though not outstanding.
Avatar: The Last Airbender- I’m sorry, It’s just not really for me.
Anima Yell!- Very cute, though some other anime do this style a lot better.
Sword Art Online Alicization- This is literally the textbook example of Awful Taste but Great Execution.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie- It’s good, but it doesn't really feel that unique or memorable compared to other slice of life anime. (That opening though… Now that is incredible.)
Monthly Girls’ Nozaki Kun- WHERE IS THE PLOT? WHY DOES IT END THE SAME WAY IT BEGAN? NOTHING HAPPENED!!
Sonic the Hedgehog- “Gotta go fast.”
Nezha- Really good, I liked the story a lot.
LEGO Ninjago- The spiritual successor to the original series, while nowhere near as good, is something I can say is 90% better than everything else on Cartoon Network right now.
Pop Team Epic- Was not really for me.
Scissor Seven (Season 2)- I liked this a lot, I cannot wait to see what happens in season 3.
Infinity Train- Good, though not as outstanding as something like Gravity Falls (Which this show is compared to a lot).
Modest Heroes- First part is okay, Second part is alright, Third part is a must watch.
NinoKuni- The most predictable movie I have ever watched.
Oblivion- The song was really good.
Scissor Seven (Season 1)- A mixed bag, full of boring episodes and some that truly amazed me.
Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja- Good for what it is.
WATATEN!: an Angel Flew Down to Me- Ehh… Really pretty animation- too bad nothing happens.
BAKI- WHY WOULD YOU JUST SWITCH TO CGI IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT SCENE?
Fireworks- Most boring anime I watched this year, a complete waste of time.
Devilman Crybaby- The worst anime I have ever seen in my life, pissed me off and made me never want to watch anime again. I am glad other people like it though, I wish I could too… But I just can’t.
