Music to Write to Master List
I rely very heavily on music when I'm writing and have curated a handful of playlists over the years and discovered several albums that really help me get into Writing Mode and set the scene. I thought I'd put together a post sharing some of my favorite instrumentals. (These sources are also fantastic for wandering around aimlessly while intensely daydreaming, btw. I know this from personal experience)
Everything under a cut, since this will be long. All included links will redirect to Spotify, but I'll include titles and artists so they can be found elsewhere.
I AM CRAFTING AN ENTIRE CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE IN MY HEAD, AND I NEED THE SOUNDTRACK TO BE...
Full of beauty/emotion/hope
• The Musical Journey by Jonas B. Ingebretsen: cannot stress enough how much I love this one. It's the entire hero's journey in a single album. It is PERFECT for sending your little Mind Blorbos on a quest. Highly recommend listening to it in order and all the way through. His recent album, The Musical Journey Pt 2 is also great.
• Pinnacle by Steven Coltart and Marcus Warner: Some gorgeous music in here. In particular, "Stories of Hope" and "Earth" are two of my favorites.
• Coming Home by Soundcritters
• The First Five Years by Denny Schneidemesser
• Emotion by Keith Merrill
• Unfolding Beauty by Stephen Tait & Tom Tideway
• Letters From Earth by Colossal Trailer Music
Tinged with sadness and full of longing
• A Way Home and The Traveler by Omar Raafat
• Disaster is Restless by The Defiant Heart
• Better by Now and Somewhere Else by From Somewhere Quiet
• Drift Ten by The Echelon Effect
• The Stories We Forgot by Andreas Kubler
• Believe by James Paget
Jam-packed with action
• Epic Action: Fight to the Last Ship, Distorted: Rock and a Hard Place, Strength to Believe, and Blaze of Glory by Epic Score: these are just 4 of the over 40 albums they have, so seriously, check them out for all your action and adventure needs. The Rock and a Hard Place one is a top fave of mine.
• Grimoire by Soundcritters
• Time Traveller by Peter Roe
• Future Heroes III by Future Heroes
Rife with crimes/mysteries/secret missions
• Crimescene by Soundcritters
• The Truth Has Been Redacted and Conviction by Luke Richards
• Crime Thriller Score by Dylan Love
• Mission Tension 1 and Mission Tension 2 by Stephen Tait
• Mystery Solved: Film Noir Detective Jazz by Various Artists
Filled with pirates/generally take place on the water
• Drowning Abyss by Colossal Trailer Music
• Set Sail for the Golden Age by Anti Martikainen
• Oceans by Marcus Warner
Whimsical/weird
• Pizz and Pieces 2 and Pizz and Pieces 3 by Thomas Howe, Stephen Tait, and Tom Tideway: Please listen to these, please please they are so delightful and bouncy and perfect for characters Partaking in Shenanigans
• Awkward Comedy Beds also by Stephen Tait and Thomas Howe: I have no idea what that title means but the music is amazing and silly plz listen
• Pomp and Whimsy and Pomp and Whimsy 2 by Howe/Tait (from above) and Alexander Rudd: for when you want silly antics but like...more proper. "Mischief at the Manor" and "A Royal Kerfuffle" delight me.
• You know what? This whole list is from these same artists, so just check it all out. Special shout out to How Very British and Cheeky Beats
Yeehaw! Giddyup! and so on
• High Noon: Vintage Cowboy Music of the Old West by Various Artists
• Vagabond by Gary O'Slide
• Americana Blues and Rock by Thomas Howe and Stephen Tait
Back in Time Babeyyy
• Vintage Jazz Instrumental by Vintage Cafe
• 40s Instrumental Music by 40s Instrumental Music (lol)
• Instrumental Love Songs of the 50s by Various Artists
• 50s and 60s Wild Guitar Instrumentals by Various Artists
• 60s Instrumentals for Dances and Groovers by Various Artists
• 70s Instrumental Greatest Hits by Various Artists
• 80s Instrumental Greatest Hits by Various Artists
Sorry, no 90s because I didn't like any of the instrumental collections
BONUS!
• Music That Hurts by Me: a collection of some of my favorite instrumental pieces that make me feel like I've been punched in the gut and am being turned inside out. But you know. In a good way. Favorites include "Sometimes" by Goldmund, "Places I Remember" by Kristoffer Wallin, and "Stop Everything! It's Snowing" by Good Weather for an Airstrike (that last one in particular is good at making me sob for some reason)
• Writing by Me: This is my gigantic writing playlist that contains a huge mix of some of my favorite "mellow" instrumentals. Many of the above listed artists are on it, but it contains, um...a whole lot more. It's 102 hours long, and has assisted me through many a writing session over the years.
And there you go. I hope that other writers & daydreamers find some things they can take from here and add to their own playlists :)

I’ve been meaning to write the scene in which Isobel gains her mordrem warblade, and now this song finally inspired me to actually do it. It came out super fucking edgy but so is this character, so *shrug*
Ex-courtier Isobel goes to the jungle to fight mordrem and thus redeem herself. It doesn’t go well. (gets much worse than this scene, actually (-: )
She runs, not thinking, not looking back. Her weapons lost, her armour broken, she has no choice.  She is almost deaf to her surroundings, her ears filled with the pounding of her heart, and the inexplicably loud drip-drip of her sap on the ground and leaves and vines and branches, as she leaves a clear, golden trail for her pursuers. And of course, the voices. Whispering, crooning, muttering, screaming, all in a cacophonous backing choir to the voice of something immense; a voice wordless, yet unfathomably, boundlessly terrifying. She would like to shut her eyes and ears, she would like to fall down and not move again until it all goes away, but instinct, and something else, won't let her. She runs, breath ragged, tearing through vines that get in her way with impressive strength for one so battered. She finds much less success in tearing at the tendrils creeping through her mind. The voices, the choir grows louder, as does the pursuit grow closer. Suddenly, a flash, behind her eyes; she stumbles against an ancient tree trunk. A vibrant silhouette, a vision of a grand sword, with an intricate shape. Hope and dread fills her heart at the sight; she shakes her head, running on. She still sees the outline. Drip, drip, the drops of sap below her. 'You can't fight anymore', jeers a voice among the choir. 'Why have we come here? Why have you?' – adds another, sad voice. The foliage grows thinner; ahead is a small clearing. She moves faster, and soon stumbles out into the light. As she straightens up, her heart stops for a second. The sword, again, but no longer a silhouette. Like some bizarre poison fruit, it hangs from a massive vine, bathed in a faint golden glow, right in front of her. Her legs carry her on their own; chills run down her spine as she stares at the blade. Its texture is one of rock-like, dead wood – evidently grown from the reclaimed bones of mordrem and sylvari. Isobel stands, transfixed. The choir goes silent now; only the dreadful voice, the voice larger than this world, speaks, in words of no language; yet they are understood. The trampling of feet abruptly awakens her from her reverie; looking around wildly, she sees armoured fighters enter the clearing from one side; monstrous, spiked, gnarled, twisted creatures who had recently been people, from the other. They march, unstoppably, brandishing their weapons, towards each other – towards her, in the middle. The almighty voice booms one deafening, primal, wordless command. Unbridled terror and hatred floods her, dragging her under, crushing her. She screams, and the voice that comes out is not quite her own. The warblade shines a dead gold as it is torn from its vine. It sings eerily as it cuts the air. Nothing can stand against it; it cleaves through weapon, shield, armour, flesh, bone. Limbs, heads, cloven torsos fly, some armoured in bark, some in metal and leather. A cyclone of rent flesh and spilled blood rages in the clearing, leaving none alive.
Suddenly, there is calm. The sword's tip is driven into the ground, and Isobel falls to her knees beside it. Shaking and gasping for air, she feels on the verge of passing out, but it does not happen. Drip, drip, drip, drip, much faster now, the mix of sap and blood trickles off of her. She stares at a severed hand still grasping a sword; arguably one of the least nauseating objects to look at in the vicinity. She stares, subconsciously and desperately trying to stave off any coherent thought. Listening to the choir of voices, faint and mournful now; beyond them, a laughter, far-off and quiet, but as deep and vast as the earth.

1. Intro - Within Temptation
“Is it considered within the parameters of adequate functionality to remember instances that are yet to happen?” A hazy memory. Pieces of data lost.
“The Mists are far more complex than anyone can really understand. Some of those ‘memories’ are probably things that will never happen.” A familiar voice. “Time in the Mists is neither present, future, or past. It’s a continuous circle of all that there is. Or will be. Or was.”
2. Supernova - Within Temptation
“I’m waiting for your last goodbye ‘Cause I’m not over it, not over it I’m waiting for your last goodbye The kiss of time“
3. The Road Less Travelled - Adam Fielding
“It felt very real.” So distant, too, Augur thought.
“Well yes, you are powered by the Mists itself. So I imagine, lovely.” The red haired woman spoke animatedly, never moving her eyes from the scrolls spread across the table. “The other units have similar experiences! You should speak to them. I think I am going to start giving you all nicknames. It feels weird calling everyone ‘Augur’. You can be Augur—the Augur. You’re my favorite after all.”
She turned around and winked. “Don’t tell the others.”
4. Sky is Falling - Amberian Dawn
“Dying colours of the northern sky Almost nothing to be seen Up and down the comets drifting by The air is heavy to breathe”
5. A Faint Recollection -  Adam Fielding
“Creator.” Augur’s voice trembled.
“Rosetta,” she gently corrected the android.
“Rosetta. I do not want her to die.” Augur tried to remember who.
“What?” Rosetta blinked.
Piece by piece. Creating a picture.
6.  Remember - Leah
“Remember, Remember… I need to complete this memory I’m reaching so deep, I cannot breath Remember…“
7. Hear, Smith of Heavens - Varien
“The Commander. She will not stop fighting. Even if it is a losing battle.” Tears poured down her cheeks. “I do not know how to proceed.”
Back to the start. Helpless.
8. No light, no light - Florence + the Machine
“You want a revelation You want to get it right And it’s a conversation I just can’t have tonight”
9. The Final Chapter - Soundcritters
Rosetta stood up brusquely, pieces of metal rods falling to the floor with a loud clank. She stared at Augur’s unblinking eyes, the tears fell down evenly. Perplexed by the sudden change of behavior, she checked the mist generator Augur was connected to. Her eyes darted through the information outpouring from the crystalline screen.
“Huh. You’re probably a little heavy on those Mists’ imprints.” She raised her right eyebrow. “There’s a lot of data here I never uploaded. Strange. It’s a recent add.”
10. Trois Vierges - Epica
“Memory, fading out Its presence still lingers in my mind Listen to your inner voice There's no escape, there's no other choice”
11. Dawn Will Bring Us Death - Varien
“Penelope.” One word. And the world seemed to end.
“Alright… phew. I think it’s time for a whole system reboot. You probably absorbed some poor dead soul’s misery.” Rosetta chuckled and patted Augur’s back reassuringly. “It’ll be ok, Augur. We’ll try again tomorrow. These things take time.”
“Why is this happening?”
“Honestly…I don’t know.”
Echo within echoes.
Over, and over again.
12. Goodbye To A World - Porter Robinson
“Thank you, I’ll say goodbye soon Though it’s the end of the world, Don’t blame yourself now And if it’s true, I will surround you and give life to a world That’s our own“
[Rebooting successful: Memory fully repaired.]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you have a Spotify account, it can also be accessed there as "Horizon Zero Dawn Playlist"! Obviously, this is an ever-evolving playlist as Forbidden West is released and eventually forms a complete second part. While I have the songs divided up by header, I feel the best exerience is listening to them all together in this order, especially the Old World through GAIA- it feels like it tells a story. There is also (obviously) Rost love in here through "You'll Be in My Heart" and "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep" even though it was too awkward to fit headers in for him there. I know Sylens is not here but I have a feeling with the character development coming in Forbidden West I will be able to find some great soundtracks for him! TBA! Please share/comment/reblog/like or if you ahve some song recs throw them in the replies! Can't say they'll make it on the formal playlist but I'm sure everyone who comes across the post would love the broader recommendations.
Listen on Spotify💫
I recommend listening to this playlist solely on Spotify, cuz I couldn’t find some of the music I used outside it. Enjoy :-)!💖
ACT I: Hearts and Minds
Heart of Fire - Valentine Wiest
A pouring sunrise fighting the mind of an Elder Dragon. A burning nightfall against a God of War.
Walking Through the Fire - Zayde Wølf (ft. Ruelle)
“I try to understand How we’re here again (In the middle of the storm In the middle of the storm) There’s no way to go, no way to go But straight through the smoke, straight through the smoke“
ACT II: Point of No Return
Into the Light - StormSound (No Youtube video available)
Never thinking, always overthinking. Daughter of terrible decisions and horrible situations. You somehow became light.
Everything is Color - Through Juniper Vale
“All this time I’ve been okay staying safe here on this solid ground, But the concrete has cracked and crumbled to dust. (To dust.) What if I jump of the edge and I give in to the great unknown?”
ACT III: Torn from the Sky
To the Fallen - Faolan
The world crumbled, and you fell with the skies underneath it.
Falling Skies - Lyriel  (No Youtube video available)
“Clouds and thunderstorm and dusty shadows Dark and endlessly I’m prepared to see the mountains crumble Come on, let the skies fall on me
I’m not afraid of losing hope or liberty I know I’m always getting out of misery”
ACT IV: One Path Ends
Infinity - Arcana
You found yourself in the most unlikely story. Word by word, it’s the worst tale you’ll ever hear.
Under Stars - Aurora
“Mad world beats outside our hearts Times of need, we are apart Under stars, we are alone Under stars”
ACT V: Facing the Truth
Fate’s Hand - Soundcritters
It wasn’t destiny, you made this mess of a prophecy.
Too Much Is Never Enough - Florence + The Machine
“And who cares about the thing I did that night? So what? Maybe Luna had it right And who cares if I’m coming back alive? So what? ‘Least I have the strength to fight”
ACT VI: The Departing
Airglow - Mark Petrie, PostHaste Music
So own it, 'till the bittersweet ending.
We believe in you, Commander.
Time to Shine - Trillium
“Today’s dawn rained down a fiery promise In beautiful bright hues You’ll gain ground when following integrity’s virtue Press on till you break through”
