OH MY DEAR FOLLOWED BLOG YOU ARE GETTING A NERDOUT NOW, because there’s so much cool stuff to learn about this thing!

For instance, the snail on the mudflaps is made with the S from the S-Cargo logo you see on the rear windshield! It has a goofy little face!

They really snailed it! (Don’t boo me, boo the official Nissan website I stole this pun from.) If you like me are looking at this idiot and wondering how you could possibly love it more, here’s one for ya: though I’ve been unable to source pictures, it came with a sushi tray. Does it look like I’m joking.

This couldn’t be more Japanese if it was made and sold in Japan only, and that’s ‘cause it was! Remember, there's two types of Japanese products: Japan-only, like the "Pike cars" lineup of which this thing was part, and things with cooler Japan-only versions, like the Micra of the time whose platform these were built upon. (Hence the steering wheel on the right side, so the bastards can keep inconveniencing you even after ferrying them across the world.)

Because yes, this was just one of four whole models that blessed the Micra platform with "spearheading" designs. This is especially cool as getting parts for them is as easy as going to the scrapyard and walking off with 80s Micra bits (they’re not worth the bother of stopping you). Though you do still need to stop your eyes from skimming straight past the Micra's NPC traffic-ass shape.

Easier said than done. Anyhow, get ready, because here’s the rest of the Pike cars:

1987-1988 Nissan Be-1

Yeah, this may not look as bold now, but this was first shown in 1985 - compare and contrast with the Micra it was based on and you can see why the limited 10.000 units run was so outdone by demand they had to set up a lottery.

1989-1991 Nissan Pao

“Okay, we’ll make 50.000 this time, so it won’t sell out before we even start making it” wrong again, and it’s clear why! A solid contender for best car name ever, it seems designed from the ground up to ooze joy in a way you can’t comprehend until you’ve been in one (not to brag, but I would know :D)

1991 Nissan Figaro

While the main inspiration was ‘30s cabriolets, I can personally attest it feels like 40s, 50s, 60s and 90s merged into one. It has remote unlock and trigger door handles, the headrest tucks down into the seat if you hate safety, the gauges have a serif font and ornate dials, the windows are electric and the switches seashell shaped… it’s WILD and I love it.

The Pike cars were a peak bubble-era Japan moment, but the experiment did have lineage, from cars like the Rasheen and Rasheen Forza...

to, as some mentioned, the 2nd & 3rd gen Cube!

The 3rd gen Cube got sold worldwide, too, with, well… an ad campaign.

Fun fact: the Cube’s rear glass wraps around the body on the side opposite the rear hatch hinges, which are on the side opposite the curb (so the opening faces the curb), and what side the curb is on changes with the side of the road you drive on - so Nissan Cubes came in two different, mirrored shapes for left and right hand drive markets.

Among Us Fansong gushings

I gotta say before we start that I LOVE the ryhyming in most of these fansngs. 10/10 love.

Emergency Meeting by Random Encounters

- The live-action for it was unexpected as I’m used to most video game fansongs being 2d or 3d animated and/or showing gameplay footage. They put a good amount of effort into this and it shows.

- The dramatical music that sounds both comedic, dramatic, and villainous (despise the context being that it’s the non-imposters singing it)

- The screaming for every poor person struggling to escape before they are thrown out of the spaceship as everyone else sings

- The classic silly sound effects when throwing stuff etc. around at some points

- The crew members being VERY physically animated/expressive with their bodies, really reminiscent of oldschool Power Rangers when they’re talking in their suits

- How it escalates more and more and more and more crewmembers get thrown out of the ship till it’s two facing off each other being both suspicious that they are the imposter

- The fact that after all of the crew is either in space or dead, that it’s revealed that the first dead person who set this in motion was actually alive all along; just was in a food coma and just wakes up to find everyone missing or dead. That is some (dark?) humor right there.

Imposter Imperceptible by NerdOut!

- A LOT of different voices (mainly cause several other really good videogame rappers/singers are in this video are involved in this one) which really expands its vocal variety from the usual, and makes it really feel like the different crewmembers are different; cause they are being voiced by different peeps

- wordgame sharp and quick as expected from them. I really hope some Rap-rating youtubers get on reacting/analyzing this video cause I’d love to hear the lyrics broken down.

- starting with one of the Imposters for the rap and has that dizzying nature of wordgame that intentionally confuses you even though clearly they are the Imposter as they vehemently deny that they are the Imposter

- huge awknowledgement of the gameplay mechanics and even terminologies/accusations that are frequently used by players (”sus” is used multiple times between crewmembers arguing between each other). Despite being animation it stays fairly faithful to the source material. Multiple watches and I’m discovering more and more details that are big nods to the actual gameplay.

- While the Imposters do win in this fansong animation, one Imposter is definitely discovered and booted out of the spaceship

Show Yourself by CG5

- while it keeps faithful to the videogame character models (save for the glass of the helmet being translated as a large singular eyeball- but the previous fansong animation did the same thing so that doesn’t count) this animation makes some liberties in several points that add much comedic affect (ex- the chorus of “I don’t want to be carried away in a Hearse” show him riding on top of a Space Hearse rocketship)

- The fact that the singer bobs to the beat of the song pretty much the entire time. really adds bounce to the entire thing.

- the singer themselves checks off both as the Paranoid one as well as the actual Imposter, and it goes for great comedic affect as well as tragic affect. Those who are not familiar with the game could be easily tricked into thinking that he’s not the Imposter due to not spotting the small signs peppered in the animation (ex- jumping through vents, and more symbolically dressing up like an actor while they say “The actor’s playing the part”, and the mirror of themsevles showing a reflection of themselves holding a knife)

- following the above point, being that he never kills in any alien/monster sort of way, it can be headcanoned that the singer is actually a regular crewmember that became the Imposter due to paranoia that may kick in while living out in space. The fact he keeps pointing at people they kill and accusing THEM as the Imposter really feeds to that tradegy headcanon

- How dramatically lit/shaded the scenes are where crewmembers are being killed or are dead, it really adds a sharpness despite the song being rather upbeat

- The fact the singer disturbs many of the crewmembers during the animation while accusing them of being the Imposter; disturbing them while they are on the toilet or sleeping or videogaming much to their frustration. It’s quite funny

- The Imposter/singer does NOT win in the animation, and it ends with them being kicked out after killing several people and there’s the nod “CG5 was the Imposter“ like you would normally see in the game

Target experiences need not be firsthand; Dark power—memories can be manifested as a shadowy power that can be used to attack and restrain targets; Pain—Night Hunter can use Memory power as lightening that can restrain or torture targets; Black Garnet—Shadow Weaver must draw power from the Black garnet, lest she lose the ability to use her Stand; Dual Tech—Night Hunter can use another Stand’s energy-based powers to fuel itself in the absence of the Black Garnet

Notes: In the off chance that her opponent has never heard of her, Shadow Weaver will reveal her face to create a bad memory in the Target right off the bat

I may modify the Stands after s5 comes out. Hordak doesn’t get a Stand and that’s a bonus defect. Horde Prime will get one after s5 probably, but it might have something to do with cloning and genetics. I would have written more but it’d be a boring hassle just to write up everybody’s powers as Stands. The AU part will come later, along with a one-shot (maybe).

I’m seeing Discord servers being the new community forum type thing, and I’m torn.  On one hand, there are definite sources of fandom that I live alone with; on the other, I really don’t have the time for another social dedication.  Even in the little community mobile game I play (Empires and Puzzles), my alliance has a Discord server that I’m avoiding joining.  I use Discord for D&D, but half of me wonders if by the time I get around to using it for my more obscure communities, everyone will have moved on to the next platform XP.

Girl Genius is probably the fandom I’m most isolated from.  Everyone is confused about why I named my car Agatha.  The only other person I’ve seen reading the comic was the college librarian, when the school was mostly closed for Thanksgiving break a couple years back.  I was still on campus studying for my candidacies, and thus one of the few people actually using the library.  We had a brief nerdout, but my priorities were on my exams :(

Hello, I've been interested in joining a Girl Genius discord server for a while now, but I'm not sure where to start. Is there more than one? If there is, do each of them accept random people who have an interest in the comic joining?

There are two (that I know of). There’s the one Airship Studios is aware of, which Cheyenne (the colorist) is a member of and where they recently held an AMA. It’s linked below the comic on the GG website right now, and is open to everybody.

Then there’s the one you’ve probably seen me refer to as “the Discord” with the same why, what other one could I possibly mean? air I use to say “the OT3″, which is more active (last I checked) and more...well, fannish? A lot of the interaction that happened on Tumblr a few years ago has drifted there. The policy there right now is that at least one person who’s already in the server has to vouch for you, because keeping things the fun kind of mad while also letting anyone issue an invite got to be too much work for the mods.

I know that’s not very lurker-friendly, sorry. Though it’s not as big an ask as it sounds because the GG fandom is very much a small town. If you post for it here or on AO3 (or maybe the LJ/Dreamwidth pages and maaaaybe maybe not FB), people will start recognizing your screenname. We don’t really have big name fans here, just talented acquaintances.

i didn’t wanna reply w this on the post where u mention it, because that post is about pointing out a specific issue of identity politics where, in the case of La Source des Femmes, an islamophobic line of thought regarding hijab is spoken through a muslim woman, thus attempting to legitimize bad belief by a manipulated identity claim. i wanted to nerd out a bit about the plato-socrates thing, because i have been thinking about that recently a lot, and i think matters are complicated w that specific case. but because what i wanna do is nerd out, it would disrupt the purpose of that post, and i’d rather not pull that move.

in my deleuze seminar, we were looking at d&g’s What Is Philosophy?, and because of that we inevitably began talking about what socrates is, specifically in plato’s writings. they want to provide a novel answer to the discussion of socrates’ character in plato’s dialogues: was he simply a fictional character acting as plato’s mouthpiece? or was plato faithfully reproducing the views of a real mentor he had simply in dialogue form? is it some kind of mixture of the two?

they reject both kinds of options as being insufficient answers, because they think ur missing something that’s philosophically happening if u try and interpret what’s happening in the dialogues as either one of the two. there’s a concern about psychological-historical speculation that, though it may have value in and of itself, it is not the strongest philosophical move to make when reflecting on the history of philosophy in a philosophical manner.

well, what constitutes the philosophical for d&g? that’s the entire book, and i cannot get into every relevant detail because doing that would take a few different posts, and i’m already afraid of going off on too much of a tangent that may read as unimportant to literally anyone else who is not super concerned about metaphilosophy. however, they introduce a new concept to describe what socrates is. socrates is a conceptual persona, a conceptual persona that plato has created in his writings and dialogues. what is a conceptual persona? the conceptual persona is, for d&g, the proper answer to the question, “who is speaking in a philosophy? who is the one thinking in a philosophy?”

the earlier two alternatives of who socrates in the dialogues is, is insufficient, because it misses the details, all the drama, that’s happening in a platonic dialogue. socrates is a conceptual persona who expresses certain tendencies, one of them being a deeply philosophical tendency. in this case, a philosophical tendency expresses a friendship with nothing but the concept, or with thought, even going so far as to shut down meandering discussion around u because u try to make the space more philosophical. however, u don’t only miss what’s happening in the dialogues w socrates; u also miss what’s happening with all the other personae in the dialogues. the question of who socrates is is only ever posed for socrates; why doesn’t anyone in mainstream discussion ask who euthyphro is? is this the historical euthyphro, or is this a character who represents plato’s...views? counterviews? d&g say neither: in the dialogues, he is a conceptual persona, one who may be inspired by the historical person euthyphro, but one who, as conceptual persona, does something very specific in the philosophical dialogue. he expresses a certain tendency that is incorporated into plato’s philosophy: a tendency of wanting to feel superior, a tendency of not wanting to do philosophy. though these are nonphilosophical, antiphilosophical tendencies, they themselves are incorporated into the philosophical work, as tendencies that the philosopher presents as tendencies that must be avoided, resisted.

platonic dialogues consist in philosophical drama, and the conceptual personae in the dialogue are the ones doing the thinking. these personae may be influenced by historical figures, and they may be the medium through which the philosopher-author thinks through philosophical problems. nevertheless, we’re gonna get stuck in a hopeless spiral if we keep trying to figure out if these characters represent, and primarily represent, something outside of the philosophical work, rather than something that has its own purpose and consistency within a philosophical work.

d&g’s concepts, especially in what is philosophy, are always posed as a challenge. they are combative in that regard, the same way plato’s socrates is combative in his philosophical investigations with his peers, his friends and rivals. that is to say, either this is a satisfactory challenge or response for the time being, or, if we think it’s a misled solution, we need to do philosophical work to provide a new answer to the philosophical problem. we cannot return to the old solutions, or if we do, they must be revamped and given further development, or they must be given as solutions to different kinds of problems (like the problem of putting bigotry into the minority member’s mouth as an insidious move in identity politics).
