so I’m cutting off this thread because it’s getting too long to keep reblogging it, but I just remembered Duterte’s Julius Caesar bullshit, so I will continue to document this kind of thing over on my filipiniana blog, @dalandan-oranges, under the tag ‘#the long reach of rome’ if you want to periodically check in on it!

Shoutout to the dream version of myself who decided to write an entire persuasive essay to my mom and sister about why they should pay their taxes instead of "boycotting" taxes because of the war in Gaza.
Yeah my real self would fucking not.

was chatting timeline stuff with gracie and i've finally solidified my headcanons for the pre-swamp thing series of events that led to "blue suit fancy man" becoming the image for constantine's initial re-entry into the occult world after ravenscar!
not getting into the WHOLE ronnie cooper storyline bc it's SO weird and i need to figure out what i want to keep/ditch about.....ALL THAT. but i'm keeping the fact that the brother of mobster harry cooper snatched constantine out of ravenscar to try and resurrect harry's son who was killed in an accident, and that constantine stuck a demon in the body bc they wouldn't take no for an answer and threatened to kill his sister if he failed.
word travels about his "success" and ends up reaching clarice sackville — who's pretty damn skeptical given that she has a "resurrected" lover and KNOWS it's not that simple — and goes to ravenscar (where constantine ended back up afterwards) to confirm her suspicions. she's able to piece together exactly what happened from what he's lucid enough to share, recognizes that it was a pretty tricky con to pull off, and notes that it could be useful to have someone on her side who 1) is just that good, and 2) is owed a debt by the coopers, who she suspects will grow in power once the demon gets its bearings and starts working on everyone around it.
when john leaves ravenscar for the final time, clarice waits three months to make sure he's staying out, then approaches him to become business associates. his terms are that she helps him get back on his feet by setting him up with rich marks in the occult scene to fleece, and she agrees. this marks the start of their long, long association.
through clarice's connections, constantine starts making a double-sided name for himself as an occultist: to the rich, on-call provider of temptation + scandal fixer; and to everyone else, prolific con artist + blackmailer taking these suckers for all they're worth. (and one who'll push a little cash/provide an exorcism to a friend in need, at that.)

I genuinely feel sorry for the people (adults) who feel like they need cartoons and TV shows to spoonfeed them lessons on history and morality for pretty much anything. Like, it's good that studios will talk about serious real-world issues, but it's stupid to rely on Just That to base your set of morals.
Go find history books and documents, not just one or two, find all which you can find, find what the winners and losers and by-standers have to say! Don't you just blindly believe what the persons who share your biases have to say, heck, learn other languages if you can and read their original texts too! If you are stuck with letting a handful of cartoons defining your worldview, then you're liable to never understand why complex issues in your own country don't seem to have an easy solution, why they exist in the first place and what can you do to help fixing said issues, if it can be done at all!

starting to think that the tv show cobra kai is a great educational tool for demonstrating to left-of-center people what the median voter in the us-american electorate values and thinks is "relatable."

i don’t want to get into a tumblr fight on the post but the bbc article about farmers winning on right to repair is not disinformation in any way? It’s just.
not the end state for the right to repair movement?
John Deere (And Apple, and Tesla, and others) has been consistently been getting bad press for those practices for a while now. As a result, the right to repair movement has been growing and has bipartisan support both in politics and on the ground - actual political progress is slow, naturally, because of course it is. There is interest in changing those laws - one of the first things Biden did in office was sign an executive order to support right to repair, and the movement in support of right to repair is socially, politically, and economically diverse, but the actual process behind drafting and passing bills is not fast nor clean, and it’s still very much not a big ticket issue, especially in the current state of the world.
Obviously John Deere (and Apple, and Tesla, and others) are going to oppose that even in the event that they become legally required to comply, or drag their feet on it - it’s a massive part of their business model. But it’s also something these companies have been getting consistent bad press for - John Deere’s reputation has taken a pretty big hit from it, Apple owners are pretty vocal about how terrible repair costs and processes are even if they still like the product, and Tesla is... Tesla. Eventually it will be worth more to them to drop those policies than to keep them, but we’re not at that point.
but there isn’t any kind of conspiracy going on here. It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s still just a step. What we’re witnessing isn’t coordinated misinformation so much as the actual transition towards political change. It’s absolutely not enough, but it’s not what I’d call a complete loss by any measure

If a class asks me to write a 20 page paper on a scientific subject, especially one in my field of natural history, it’ll suck and take time, but fuck I can just DO that. Just start writing. All the info’s right there! Find some papers on google scholar, look at some cladograms, cite some dudes from the early 2000s and just restate what they said. All the sources are plain, mostly without bias, and at least pretend like they represent something “objective”. Does x animal have y anatomical feature? Which of these rocks is highest in silica content? Has any correlation been found between these things?
If a class asks me to find ten sources on political issues I care about and how they can be fixed, through the machinations of congress, I think Id rather tear my own jaw off my skull. This is excruciating.
