trying to replace my doom scrolling on social media time to reading, can y'all recommend some fanfics? Ik this is probably not the best alternative, but I think incorporating my current hyper fixations is the best way to go so I don't feel like I'm punishing myself.

ships or pairings (and characters) I'd like to see are in the tags but feel free to recommend anything that's not on there too (idk how fanfics or AO3 works that much so I only listed ships and pairings, if there are like other genres like found family(?) or something you'd like to recommend feel free to do so)

New OC I'm workshopping slowly:

Her name is Birdie Anne Carpenter, from the Appalachian foothills of Tennessee. Her Great Granny Elsie, whom Birdie only just remembers, was into folk magic, particularly water witching. Memories of her great grandmother dowsing for water and talking about home remedies stuck with Birdie and blossomed into an interest in magic and the supernatural.

A little (or a lot, depending on who you ask) superstitious, Birdie has a hobby for learning about old Appalachian rootwork and conjure, as well as folklore and has a fondness, particularly, for ghosts. How much she actually believes in any of these things is sometimes a little grey, but she prides herself in preserving old mountain craft and her guilty pleasure is going on ghost hunts in her spare time. She's yet to see a ghost or prove their existence, but keeps hoping she'll succeed one day.

Career-wise, I think Birdie is currently studying to be an English teacher. It's not the path she necessarily expected to take, but she wanted to do something to help her rural community and decided that the best way to do that would be to provide a teacher who is passionate about sharing knowledge. I haven't quite decided on her school situation, but I think she must have taken courses out of state (originally she wanted to Get Out and move somewhere else permanently) but returned to be a student teacher.

I've also tossed around the idea of Birdie being in the medical field, or studying to be, but I'm unsure how much I like that yet. Maybe Birdie doesn't even know for sure. Could be that she finds it hard to stick with anything very long because she gets restless, and returning home (or going elsewhere, depending on what a thread calls for) could be an attempt to re-center herself and figure things out.

Anyway. Birdie is still very rough-edges like most of my OCs oops but I really like her and she's a fun excuse to express my love for Appalachia.
