I have recently learned of a whimsical and venerable agricultural practice called espalier, and it made me think of you.

What it was in particular about these carefully pruned and nurtured fruit trees growing in planful patterns against a wall... I cannot be sure. 😂

The old world magic of clever science and growing things, maybe?

If anyone knows how to get me to show my face after a long absence it's SPARKLYHYPERBOLE WITH THE ESPALIER COMING IN CLUTCH

Real quick, for the uninitiated: espalier is the ancient practice of pruning and training trees to grow into unique two dimensional shapes, either against a wall or free-standing trellis. It has both decorative and practical value: trees trained on a sun-facing wall that retains heat will have an extended growing season, and horizontally-trained branches can produce higher yields with less space and are easier to harvest.

There's also a particular diamond-shaped method that I just learned is called Belgian Fencing, and I am a fan:

My focus is going to be native habitat restoration and I am ✨quite jazzed.✨ I've also been writing a lot over the last couple weeks, at least compared to the six months or so prior, but it's split between multiple projects so there's nothing publishable to show for it 🫠 But hey, progress is progress! And that concludes this random life update addendum 😂

My contribution to @zelinktines Day 3: The Bet! Summary: Zelda and Link make a friendly Valentine's Day wager. Link has to bake (he's never baked before) and Zelda has to cook (she can't cook to save her life) Fluff ensues! For @zeldaelmo for putting up with a month of me DMing her pictures of my attempts at baking her Loftwing Nest Rolls recipe from Flour, Water, Salt, Yeast, Love, and all her patient advice along the way. This fic is inspired by and based on the true story of my struggles. Also for @haste-waste, another fellow baking aficionado and foodie whose recipes are next on the docket to master. And finally, @summonerluna, who’s also shared several recipes and a great many tangential interests with me.

What better thing to do with your friends when you’re snowed-in than stoke the woodstove, read some zelink, cook, bake, and plan next year’s garden? Please consider this a combined Loftwing Letter and Zelinktine to the three of you! 😘 (Because the 1500 word limit wasn't gonna be enough)

Fic Recs - Expanding Hyrule Bingo!

If you're looking for some hot fresh recs that you may not have seen before, boy do I have the post for you!

For the last few days, I have been compiling answers for the @expanding-hyrule TBR Bingo Community Challenge! If this is the first time you're hearing of it, EH is a LoZ fandom project that intends to popularize a tag and create an archive for Original Legends, or LoZ fics, art, etc that create their own version of Hyrule, characters therein, and plot different from the canon games. WIP Ask Game

Thank you @sparklyhyperbole and @raurusthirdeye for tagging me! I have too many WIPs, so I'll do the ones I'm actively working right now:

Sacrilege and Sororities Chapter 16: Oh Balls (New Year, New Me)

Link meets their eyes, one by one. "I need to know that you are all who you say you are. Tell me something only you would know."  Sir Xavier answers with a straight face, “Your security answer to the question 'What is your favorite food to eat?' has always been 'p***y.'” Link breathes in through his nose.

2. Ganondorf's (Rude) Awakening- The Roommate AU. Modern!AU Link and Ganon are forced to be roommates. It doesn't end well.

“I just happened to notice that there’s been a lot of hair in the shower drain recently,” Ganondorf said, spinning his lunch salad in the spinner with perhaps more violence than usual. “Hm.” Link shrugged and popped another pizza roll into his mouth. “Maybe I’m shedding.” “I’m not sure it’s all yours. Has your friend been taking showers here?” “You mean Zelda? I’m sure it’s not her.” Ganondorf’s fingers tightened and clenched on the spinner handle. In front of him, the salad appeared ready to fly away and take off into geosynchronous orbit. “The extra hair is blonde. And long,” Ganondorf gritted out. Link raised an eyebrow and gestured to his own hair.

Also wanted to give everyone an update that I am working very hard to have the next chapter of Sacrilege and Sororities done asap!! It has not been forgotten or abandoned. I've just been disgustingly busy and I don't write linearly. And this is the writer type that I am, so take that as you will about my ridiculous method of writing long form content haha (thank you @linksthoughtbrambles and @bahbahhh for tagging me!)

Do you respond to comments? Yes! I try to respond to every single one

Fic with the angsty ending? Not really any of them -- maybe the alternate-pov-scene one, because that doesn't really have any kind of structure and is just left hanging? I like happy endings

Fic with the happiest ending? They all have happy endings (I know what I like lol). If I had to pick one, maybe TDW just because there's a longer buildup so it feels like a happier ending

Do you get hate? Kind of? I got a couple comments that said something like "this really wouldn't happen irl." Commenter, my fic is free and so is the back button

Do you write smut? 6 out of my 7 fics are explicit -- yup, I write smut and love it. One day I'll write stuff that isn't smutty, but that day hasn't happened yet.

Have you ever co-written a fic? Not yet, but I'd love to someday!

All time favorite ship? Zelink, no question. I appreciate that other ships exist but Zelink is definitely my OTP.

WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Thousand Year Sleep - BOTW Link's in the Shrine of Resurrection for a thousand years instead of 100, so literally everyone he knows is gone, the land looks different, and really all he has is the Slate and Zelda's voice. The sheer amount of NPC creation required for this doesn't fit my writing preferences, at least currently.

Writing strengths? Dialogue and emotions -- they're just so fun to write!

Writing weaknesses? Structure, structure, structure. If I run into a wall with a fic and can't figure out how to fix it, it's almost always a structure problem. I've tried looking up story structures and I've wound up more confused rather than less, so I haven't figured out how to solve this one yet.

How are your hens doing? Did you ever get your salmon faverolles? 🐥😁

First of all, this is the SWEETEST ASK I have EVER RECEIVED.

And second of all, YES I DID!!

Their names are Ducky and Snickerdoodle and they are so ridiculous 🤌✨

THIS IS DOODLE

She is the chillest little bean I’ve ever had. I don’t know if it’s just her nature to be so trusting or if she’s just really stupid. 🤔 She is a ball of fluff and only seems to notice that I’ve picked her up when she takes three steps midair and doesn’t get anywhere.

She takes naps like this a lot and I always think she’s dead 🤷🏻‍♀️ She’s at the bottom of the pecking order and is terrified of everything. But sometimes if I hold still for a few seconds she forgets to be scared of me and climbs all over me like I’m an inanimate object, so maybe they’re both idiots. 😂

Aside from their doofy personalities lets discuss more reasons why Salmon Faverolles are THE BEST.

They have FEATHERED FEETS and EXTRA TOES!

They’re ready to STRIKE A POSE at a moment’s notice!

And they make all the big chickens JEALOUS!

On an unrelated note, you guys may have noticed that besides the occasional reblog I haven’t had much of an online presence, and I have like 20 comments in my ao3 inbox I haven’t responded to (I am so sorry T_T).

I’ve been feeling REALLY not myself recently. My relationship with things I love and that I feel are a big part of my identity—including writing—had shifted drastically over the last four months from something I enjoyed to something that terrified me. And it happened with too many things at once and too strongly to be a coincidence. So I’ve been doing a mental health check, and am looking into finding a therapist I like to try to figure out what’s going on. Cuz it kind of does feel like components of my identity are deteriorating and I sometimes catch my thoughts turning real dark.

So all that to say that I am enjoying my native plant garden and my chickens and letting things like an online presence fall by the wayside for a bit. But I’m still here and I still see you and appreciate SO MUCH all the nice comments you’ve left, even though it’s taking me a very long time get myself together to get on ao3 and answer them 💚🍃✨

BTW have you read Hit list by zestycrouton? It's high-school au and pretty old fic from ff.net. One of the best fics, all characters so well developed, it felt like you're watching a movie before your eyes. Yeah, I highly recommend.

My friend @deiliamedlini writes a lot of AUs. I'm linking the Pirate AU, but there are tons of others, too. Some get dark, and don't think she won't kill characters off just because they've grown on you. 😂

Speaking of Pirates, my friend @mistresslrigtar also has one. She also has an ongoing rock star AU that I also recommend!

If you're looking for something short, you should check out @ladyhoneydee 's work. She writes a lot of modern AU and everything comes with a manageable word count! This is a sweet coffee shop AU, but she has tons of others, too.

If you're more looking for stories that have that 'game feel' but are based on own ideas, I'll direct you to @nocturnalfandomartist's blog(s). She has several AUs going on, with concept art and all!

I've only started to explore @abbyz-elda 's work but what I read so far I enjoyed greatly. Currently listening to this one with my screen reader when I'm out running, but I recommend the Sci Fi AU 'A Link to the Stars', too.

Next on my read list is @flutefemme's TP 1920th AU. I read enough of Flute's fics and snippets from this one that I'm confident to recommend before reading.

I skipped Hit List as one of the few fics when I went through all the zelink fics on ff.net and Ao3. I heard that the characterizations etc are really good, but since it's about a school shooting, I didn't want to read it. I'm not doing well with violence in general, and a story that deals with any aspects of a school shooting is not what I want to read for fun. That being said, that obviously doesn't say anything about the quality of the fic and isn't supposed to discredit the story in any kind. I heard others enjoy it greatly. It's just not for me. 😊

A very fun story with a neat premise! The comic starts off very strong, with an action-packed first chapter. Link and his sisters play off each other really well, and I love the Sheikah here and how they interact together. - waterglider

Curse of Demise is an intriguing and worthwhile read! The story and the art left me with a happy feeling each page that I read. The pacing in my eyes is good as you get to know and learn more about the characters, lore, and over all take time to enjoy it as you would with the games. I'm on board to see what will come of the story no matter what route it goes down. You can just tell the hardwork that went into it and I'm so glad to have read it and very happily recommend it to anyone looking for an original zelda comic to read! - SpicyMcBean

This comic follows such a fun and intriguing cast of characters.
