I decided to try a SpearCraft Book Box this month and it was kind of awesome!  The theme was Pirates & Mermaids and I happened to choose a month when there would be TWO books, not just one!  From the theme I kind of expected Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller, which I am most definitely excited to read, and the second book turned out to be Updrift by Errin Stevens., which sounds intriguing.  I love all the bookmarks and the two magnets, plus the skull-and-crossbones soap by SpearCraft smells so nice!  Definitely a great first box!

My Spearcraft box came! And I finally had a moment to take a less than stellar pix of it with my reading partner, Rye, looking not very happy. Mainly because I'm looking at the book box rather then pet him. But the box is amazing. Labyrinth <3 forever! haha #spearcraftbookbox #spearcraft #bookbox #spoilers #wintersong #geekout #labyrinth #davidbowie #books #booklove #bookaddict #happythings

Report to Spymaster Aurelius of the Dragoneye, 28th of Last Seed, 2E589
I would like to preface this report with news that will doubtless be discouraging: While my mission was completed, being the confirmation that the Graverobber listed as Secundinus was neutralized as a threat, I am afraid I must request a discharge from the Dragoneye. There are no words in this language or any other that may prove adequate in my shame, and I only pray to the Eight that, upon reading my dispatch, you may find it in your mercies to allow my honorable discharge.
My journey to the Alessian Tombs was met with little resistance. Veteran as I am to the Planemeld, I am no stranger to the threat of Daedra or the invaders of the Three Banners, and so traversing the sewers evading the eyes of our enemies was a trivial matter. The few who may have caught me, including three of the Xivkyn race and two Ebonheart Pact scouts, met with a swift end. Of the journey I shall report little more, and instead focus on the task given to me.
When I crossed the threshold into the Alessian Tombs, immediately there was a chill in the air and surroundings; indeed, the iron and wood of the barricade were cold to the touch even in the heat and humidity of the sewer in summer. This was the first indication that the villainous Secundinus may had yet been performing his foul craft away from the eyes of god and emperor. I entered the catacombs and confirmed as such. Bodies in varying states of decay laid in the catacombs, including my missing comrade Pentus, who as you may recall disappeared on a similar such scouting. I attempted to put my distress aside to better focus, though it was, admittedly, a great struggle. I must confess I found some cold relief in the fact that he was not raised, however I cannot say the same for the others who had also gone missing in recent months. Among those I could still recognize by face were Arius Richton of the City Legion, Helane and Turuk Munia of our own Dragoneyes, and who I believed to be Zelanus Endario, though the face was swallowed and sunken one could nonetheless make out his distinctive birthmark about the lip.
But I digress. To my shame, I found myself frozen in the midst of our profaned comrades, unable to proceed. Though I felt in my innermost self that this was the work of Secundinus, my orders were to visually confirm as such, and on this I very nearly failed. It was only the clamor of battle, the sudden pull of the undead away from me, and the cries of a ghastly language -- one that defies description-- that spurred me on.
I willed myself to proceed, and found the cause of mission upon the top of a floodway: Secundinus himself, having gained a second life as a wraith, engaged with, of all beings, an Elf unlike any I have ever beheld. Clad in armor that was of no army or mercenary to my knowledge, armed with a spear of a build that similarly evaded my knowledge, she-- and I do attest to this Elf’s gender presentation as female -- was the source of the undead’s sudden attraction. Secundinus, in what I can only assume was his power over his thralls, summoned his small army to assist him against his assailant. Of these she dispatched with a sharp movement of her spear; her attention, save for one moment, was set upon this wraith.
I would like to bring to the attention of my Spymaster this moment. There was but one instant, only one, in which her attention broke, for it was in that instant that she saw me. It could not have been more, for the battle with our common foe demanded no less than her full attention, the work of her spear too quick to allow any more than that instant, but her eye was upon me then. It may as well have been an eternity to me, still as I was as the battle before me raged.  It was then that she spoke in a voice unfamiliar with our language, “Look! Away!”
Secundinus, demon he was, set upon this woman the force of our comrades and other profaned dead. Though magic and spearcraft sent many back into the arms of Arkay, she was soon overpowered, and the clamor of battle stilled to a deathly quiet, broken only by the laughter of Secundinus’ shade. It was then that the wraith turned and set its eyeless sights to me. I looked about wildly for the way in which I arrived, but soon found myself beset upon all sides by raised thralls. I drew my sword, ready to fight to the last breath, when no less than a miracle occurred.
It was a song. That is the only way I can describe it. A song cut the air, and it- forgive how ludicrous this may sound - felled the thralls that surrounded me. My head began to ache, my ears began to ring, but I willed myself to find the source. And find it I did.
The Elf, whom I knew to be dead, had returned to her feet, staggered and limp about the body, but standing. She moved as if she were a marionette with limp strings, jerking and uncertain, a parody of her sureness before, but it drew the attention of Secundinus away from me and back to his combatant. He cackled -- and the song became a scream.
The wraith became no more, and so too did his thralls. There was no clattering of bones, no sifting of dust in the air or final breaths of air. There was only silence, myself, and the Elf who was dead a moment before.
She did not acknowledge my presence as she did before. When she did look to me, it was with the same eyes of fallen Pentus, and when she spoke, it was not with a voice but with an urging that reached my very core.
‘Run.’
And so I did. I did not stop until I reached my base, much to the shock and concern of Commandant Pallia. And now, one week after the completion of my mission, I write this dispatch. I ask of you with all humility, and beseeching all mercy within you, to not allow me to go within the Sewers again, and to accept my resignation from the Dragoneye.

PoC WoL Week Day 1:  Vacation...?
I still remember when I left Ul’dah for the first time since landing.  First place I went to was Gridania, where I took a nice holiday for myself and tried my hand at spearcraft.  It was a lot of fun, though, I suppose that is in a large part due to certain people I met.  I must say it is a lot more enjoyable to learn with a friend, especially when the friend is so good at explaining!  Said friend is the Duskwight gentleman on my...um...picture’s left.

FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt 18: Panglossian (make-up)
Staying in the safe-room of Ayanga and Tolemy’s home guaranteed that Zareen and her cubs were swept up in the whirlwind of that household’s routine.
It was a whirlwind the miqo’te found herself enjoying immensely, despite the circumstances that had driven her to “hide away”. She very quickly learned the rhythms of the house, who went where and when, and when Ayanga and Tolemy approached her and asked her to start teaching spearcraft to Terbish and Melody, and to help Tolemy learn more than the basics, the Jaguar found herself genuinely, truly *happy* for the first time in moons. Her daughters adored Melody and thrived with their cousins around, developing their vocabulary and mobility in leaps and bounds. And Zareen felt herself in the heart of something again, surrounded by controlled chaos.
The bad days, when she watched one or the other of her brothers sink into their darknesses, or when she fell quietly and unobtrusively into her own, they were hard. And sometimes, when she looked at the two men so deeply in love with one another, her heart ached and that little jealous voice whispered “Why can’t I have that, too?” Those times were hard. It was hard to know what was going on across the sea, too, where her enemy was drawing out his torment of her sister who knew how far.
Zareen couldn’t allow herself to dwell on it. She had lessons to prepare and breakfasts and lunches and dinners to help serve and stories to tell and laughter and adventures and cubs to teach and play with. She had everything she’d been yearning for (almost… at least for a little while) and it was with panglossian blinders on that she leapt into the next sun and the next, determined to hold on to this time for as long as she possibly could.

Sumia drew in a deep, steadying breath, watching another pegasus knight wheel down out of the sky.  As soon as her hooves touched the ground, her rider dismounted unsteadily -- and she still might have fallen, if she hadn’t been holding so tight to her saddle horn.  “Are you alright?” Sumia asked gently, touching the woman’s arm.
“...I don’t know what I was expecting,” she chuckled weakly.  “But I don’t think it was that.”
“Sumia?”
She glanced up to see Cordelia circling just overhead.  “Whenever you’re ready.”
Oh, dear.
She closed her eyes tight and took another breath, turning the ring a few times on her finger.  She’d been preparing for this for weeks now.  She’d sparred with Chrom whenever they both had a free moment to steal, and Robin had taught her the basics of magic and worked with her until it came...maybe not easily, but without a struggle.  She could do this.  She knew she could.
But it didn’t stop her knees from shaking.
Blowing out a short sigh, she moved back to her pegasus, giving her mount’s neck a gentle pat before pulling herself up into the saddle and getting comfortable.  A click of the tongue was all it took to send the pegasus soaring up into the air, wings flapping easily as she spiraled up in Cordelia’s wake.
“Welcome to the Dark Flier examination,” her fellow knight called, settling into an easy glide that Sumia’s own pegasus matched.  “In order to be certified, you must demonstrate proficiency in three areas: spearcraft, tomecraft, and aerial maneuvering.  We’ve constructed a flight course over and around the castle and grounds with colored targets and obstacles: red targets should be destroyed with your lance, while blue targets should be destroyed with your tome.  Anything in green must be avoided.  You have three minutes to clear as many of the targets as you can: there are three judges who will be watching your progress and providing a score based on your performance, with higher marks awarded for destroying targets with the correct weapon and points deducted for coming into contact with green obstacles.  Do you understand?”
Her head was spinning from trying to keep it all in mind.  Red was for tomes, blue was for lances -- or, wait, was it the other way around?  “C-can you go through it one more time?” she asked.
As Cordelia started into her well-rehearsed speech, a movement caught her eye.  Looking past her fellow knight...she felt her heart leap up into her throat: Chrom and Robin both stood beaming on the castle battlements -- and as she watched, her husband raised a hand high, holding up what looked to be a flower plucked of every petal...save one.
A good fortune for her.

ARTS 346 // INQUIRY #2 & MEDIA #2
Noveltea is a monthly book club subscription box that includes a book of the month, tea leaves and novelty items (such as a tea cup, tea infuser, stickers, bookmarks, etc.). Some of my inspirations for this project were other book boxes such as Once Upon a Book Club, SpearCraft and Cratejoy. This inquiry includes a logo exploration, packaging/product desgin and UX/UI design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my logo I wanted to combine the two elements that inspired this project, books and tea. I started off by sketching out a couple of ideas for logos in my sketchbook. I wanted to create a logo that was simple and minimalistic. I chose to use a typewriter typeface because I thought it was fitting considering the theme of this project was books.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the Desktop and Mobile design, I wanted to create a website that was user-friendly. One way I accomplished that was creating a progress bar when the user is in process of subscribing to the website. This indicates to the user where they are in their subscribing process.
The mobile design is very similar to the desktop version; however, the pictures and boxes are stacked vetically instead of horizontally. Also, the mobile design uses a hamgurger menu as it's primary form of navigation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I received a lot of good feedback and suggestions from my peers in to make this project stronger. For example, one of my classmates suggested that I pair a type of tea/flavor of tea to the protagonist of the book. Overall, I had a lot of fun on this project and I could definitely see myself working on it in the future.
Media #2:
This podcast episode was so interesting and comforting in so many ways. Like many other college students and young designers, I put a lot of pressure on myself to produce good work (inside and outside of school). However, this podcast re-defined what “good” work really means for me. I feel like my generation has become overly consumed with how many followers they have or how many likes they can get on an instagram post. Which in my opinion, causes an unfortunate mentality that the only way they will be accepted, is if society accepts them. I feel like this mentality contributes to many college students and young designers thinking that the only that work is considered “good” is if other people perceive it in that way. I think the biggest takeaway from this podcast and the discussion we had in class, is to always remember to create for yourself first. As long as I am proud of the work I have created (whether it becomes popular or not), it is still considered good work.

The Long-Suffering Attendants
as is true of just about any of Xing’s heirs, Yazhu has two retainers who were assigned to her from an early age, both from lower-caste clans which express allegiance to the Bai family (and whom did not produce an heir, themselves). Yazhu’s retainers are the seasoned-and-stern Lian Sze, a middle-aged spearwoman known for her austere beauty— made all the more impactful by her ‘towering’ height (for a woman, just short of 6′)— as well as her unflinching discipline and sharp tongue; and Junjie Tom, a hot-headed, ever-so-slightly-haughty, but generally amiable swordsman only a couple of years Yazhu’s senior— a fairly handsome boy, but certainly over-confident and overly-competitive.
despite their clashing personalities and sensibilities to their young lord, both Lian and Junjie are as fiercely dedicated to Yazhu as any knight you might imagine, each having been won over by the Bai’s charm, talent, and warm nature over time, (Lian was also Yazhu’s tutor in spearcraft in their youth). of course, this fact only serves to make it more frustrating that Yazhu constantly gives them the slip.
make no mistake, Yazhu is equally fond of her retainers as they are of her, and yet she still resents the idea of constantly being watched/attended to, so she takes every opportunity to sprint ahead of her doting attendants in her travels, happy to sieze a few days, (or if they’re lucky, a week-or-two), in peaceful solitude before the pair inevitably tracks her down. and it’s no slander to their diligence that the wanderlusting heir continues to escape, rather, it’s a testament to Yazhu’s underhandedness. or, as Lian would fondly claim, it’s owed to the fact that Yazhu is just one “slippery little bastard.”
Lian and Junjie frequently argue over who was responsible for the escape each time, but ultimately heave a heavy sigh and set to work finding where their liege has run off to.

i’m never going to let [her/him/them] hurt you again.
"You can't stay here forever." Mingxia said one day nearly a sennight since they returned from the cliffs. Foulques looked up from the piece of wood he was carving. "Though I do enjoy sharing my house with you. It will become as a cage to you ere long."
"What would you have me do, then? Return to Gridania to face justice for my misdeeds?" Foulques replied, suggestion dripping with sarcasm.
"Hells take me if I am so daft as to suggest that," Mingxia snapped. "Both of us know their justice is at best unreliable- especially for you. I don't even think you'll be able to get to anything resembling a trial- whoever remembers you will most likely try to kill you on sight. No, we'll have naught to do with them aside from this house being here. Come with me to Dravania. It's a bit far but I can introduce you to better teachers than what this wood has to offer."
Foulques set down his woodworking. "Better teachers, you say? Compared to here, the bar is set fairly low, would you not agree?"
"What if I told you some of my teachers are among the oldest living beings on Hydaelyn? What if I told you...that they are dragons?"
"You jest. Truly, dragons? You are telling me the creatures of fairy stories exists."
"I speak true. They were once enemies of their neighbour Ishgard but for the time being, they seem to be reconciled. They know of a spearcraft far more powerful and dangerous, so much that the lancers here look like toddlers in comparison. I have learned from them and do not find their teachings lacking." Seeing that he was still not totally convinced, she stood and offered her hand to him. "At least come see for yourself. Indulge me a little, please. Let's get away from here. I refuse to let that glorified wet noodle of a guildmaster hurt you any more. He has done enough damage- you should have opened your wings and flown by now. Instead, his cowardice has nearly broken them." Foulques cracked a small grin at her remark.
"...Very well. Let us go see these dragons of yours. But," he agreed, looking pointedly at her. "Spare me the pity. I did not need it before and I certainly do not want it now."
"Of course. My apologies. Shall we head out at first light tomorrow? I would much prefer to be out of Fallgourd before the crowds thin, so it will be easier to avoid dealing with the Wailers."
