For Kate Sweeting, love isn’t in the air. It’s in the water.
Since her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits, her well-being on life support. Her future looks desolate until she and her mother, Cara, make another plan: abandon their shriveled existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where Cara can play small-town librarian-bachelorette and Kate can figure out what’s up with that secretive Blake family from the beach.
Everyone is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake is there waiting for her…and so is someone considerably less friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will have changed for her—what she feels, what she wants, and what she’ll risk to be with the man she loves.
Goodreads
Updrift was a delightful read with a unique take on mermaid lore, that was magical and compelling. Centered on family, love and community the story really touched my heart.
I am not new to mermaid tales after all I grew up with a little mermaid named Ariel like a lot of kids and with my interest in the original fairy tales of course I know the original darker tale. Being the book lover that I am I have read a lot of books, my interest mostly leans towards the supernatural/paranormal stories so you would think that I have read at least a couple of mermaid stories before. You will be real surprised to know that I read my first book centered on a mermaid this year and Updrift is my second.
Errin wrote the story in a way I am not used to but I did enjoy, there was a lot of foreshadowing and then explanation later. The story centers around Kate and her mother Cara but is told from the point-of-view of most of the main characters. I love the fact that we get a little insight into each of the characters to get a better feeling about who they are. While all the characters seem nice my favorites are Gabe and Kate, they are just too adorable. Kate and Gabe are both introverted and driven but are kind and considerate to other people. I do wish I had more scenes with Maya who is a friend of both and I am hoping for more scenes with another couple mentioned in the next book.
As the mer world was gradually introduced the major questions aren't answered until further on in the book but the world itself is explained in different ways and it was a nice take on the mermaid lore and I liked Errin's look on it. The description of the world was simple but beautiful and I really would like to hear about more of their histories, old mer stories and connections to other people.
Updrift takes readers on a ride through Kate's life from childhood to adulthood with all the important stuff in between. It was a surprisingly delightful story that had a twist I wasn't at first expecting but I quite enjoyed, with an ending that was a little emotional. It’s the first book in the Mer Chronicles and I am looking forward to reading the next book, the possibilities for the story are endless and I am excited to find out which way the story will flow.
Overall 4 stars

Updrift by Errin Stevens - blurrypetals review
originally posted jan. 11, 2019 - ★☆☆☆☆
Damn it, why is it so hard for me to find a good mermaid book?
Like, seriously, why is it that Anne Greenwood Brown is the only one who hasn't managed to make me feel like I need to take a shower after reading her mermaid books? Why are there no other books like Lies Beneath? I do not get it.
This one, despite its dogshit pacing, had me at least a little interested for the first chunk of the book. The foreshadowing was hamfisted as all hell (I even think there was a line like, "There was something fishy about the Blakes," that made me roll my eyes so hard I temporarily went blind) and there was wayyy too much telling instead of showing, but I liked the mystery as to why the families were trying to keep Gaylen and Emma—god, sorry, wrong bad mermaid book—Gabe and Kate apart, I liked some of the tweaks to mermaid/siren lore, I was enjoying myself for the most part...until Kate and Gabe actually got together. Things got really weird and uncomfortable very quickly.
The first thing that gave me the creeps was Gabe's whole ability to soothe and change emotions. Fuckin' hate that shit. Your new wifey's upset? No worries, just literally manipulate the way she thinks and feels until she's more pliant! No problemo! Second thing that squicked me out was Gabe casually mentioning he was literally going to fuck her until she got pregnant, even though they A, just got together after several years apart, B, very suddenly just decided to get married even though they hadn't seen each other in several years, and C, had not first made sure that Kate even wanted kids, let alone getting literally instantaneously pregnant after three days of continuous boning—boning that's only briefly interrupted by their parents showing up simply to tell them congrats on the sex and leave. Of course this doesn't kill the mood for Gabe and Kate and they continue as if their parents did not almost walk in on them. It's so creepy! Especially since Kate is so trepidatious but then, due to Gabe's literal mind manipulation, is totally fine with it. Like sure, just go ahead and get her pregnant even though she was just visibly very distressed by it not even five minutes ago.
Ugh. It was not fun. It was not cute. It couldn't have even been explained away as an interspecies misunderstanding or whatever, because Gabe was socialized as a human, so he should know this is a no-no. It was just gross and, as stated before, made me feel like I needed to take a shower afterward.
This book is gross, it's written poorly, and I feel gross for having read it. I'm just glad I didn't enjoy it, because then I'd be in quite the moral dilemma with myself. Luckily it's easy to write this off as meaningless drivel (like, thank god it isn't popular; otherwise I might be having a coronary), but please, I beg of you, if you're an author, do not use books like this as a blueprint for your "cute" or "sexy" new mermaid book. It is not cute, it is not sexy, it is creepy and gross and I think Errin Stevens should be ashamed of herself.

I decided to try a SpearCraft Book Box this month and it was kind of awesome! The theme was Pirates & Mermaids and I happened to choose a month when there would be TWO books, not just one! From the theme I kind of expected Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller, which I am most definitely excited to read, and the second book turned out to be Updrift by Errin Stevens., which sounds intriguing. I love all the bookmarks and the two magnets, plus the skull-and-crossbones soap by SpearCraft smells so nice! Definitely a great first box!

Review is under the cut.
Okay, first of all, I was given this book by the author for a book tour in exchange for an honest review. Honestly the book started out rather slowly for me and took me almost two months to read. It wasn’t until part two that I started getting captivated with the story but that may be because Kate became more relatable then (and closer to my age.)
As I mentioned above, the book originally started out VERY slowly for me, I just could not get into it at first. It wasn’t until after Gabe had revealed that he was a siren to Kate that it actually started to pique my interest. This seemed to be more of a coming of age story… girl meets best friend, grows up and falls in love. But it has some extra twists that Erinn decided to add, mainly the fact that he’s a siren and she can’t be turned into one but he can help Kate breathe underwater.
I loved the whole aspect of the book when it comes to the mermaids (or sirens as Gabe likes to say) and their abilities. The part where they can help humans hold their breath longer did confuse me. Although I must admit that getting “married” and losing your virginity when you’re ovulating all based on your pulse does kind of terrify me, I did appreciate the fact that they “mate” for life.
The “villain” of the story really annoyed me. I didn’t like that he could change into Gabe and trick Kate into believing that he was her husband. That had just seemed rather odd to me and didn’t seem like it had too much purpose for the story? In all honesty, the book could have wrapped up before then – there wasn’t really any necessity for the relationship drama that had caused and I really wanted to smack Kate for even believing the man.
The ending was different than I’m used to and I happened to really love it. I am very curious on how the second book will go… Will it be set around Carmen and her past? Or will it be set around Kate and Gabe’s child?

Updrift is a great love story and introduction to this series about sirens, community and the strong ties that bind them. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other. The story has romance, suspense, humor and drama, all woven together expertly to make you feel everything deep inside- and really care about them all, even the ones with suspect character traits and who make…
