SD Drama CD Translation: Fujieda After Story

Part 2 

CD 1 Track 4

Rei: “Good morning.”

Roost Manager: “Morning, Rei-kun.”

Towa: “Morning.”          

Rei: “Eh, Towa you’re working today?”

Towa: “Yeah.”

Rei: “I see…Ah, wait, didn’t you go visit the mainland? Where did you go? How was it?”

Towa: “How? ....Nothing really special.”

Rei: “Eh? There is no way that’s true. Of course, you were with Fujieda, right?”

Towa: “Yeah.”

Rei: “A place Fujieda would visit…. where would that be? Something related to work?”

Towa: “No.”

Rei: “What? Is it only a secret between you guys? I don’t mind.”

Towa: “Rei.”

Rei: “What?”

Towa: “Taku’s trial date has been decided.”

Rei: “…That’s right. Taku’s defense…will be Fujieda, right?”

Towa: “Yes.”

Rei: “I see.”

Junko: “We met him by chance before the store, but when he saw us, he froze so we dragged him inside.”

Arata: “Sorry that they had to forcefully drag you here.”

Igarashi: “Ah, no no no, I’m totally fine.”

Rei: “Well then, the group is free to take a seat at the table Towa just finished cleaning.”

Honami: “Yes~….Towa, good evening.”

Arata: “Good evening, Towa.”

Towa: “Igarashi.”

Igarashi: “Towa-san, ‘sup.”

Rei: “Well then you guys, what do you want to drink?”

Junko: “Hm, what should I have~”

Honami: “Ah- hey Towa, by the way do you know? About Fujieda?”

Towa: “Fujieda?”

Junko: “Yes, yes, that! I was wondering about that too! I wonder how much of it is true.”

Arata: “What about him?”

Honami: “Eh….how should I say it best?”

Junko: “Right…there have been some not nice rumors …going around about Fujieda-san.”

Rei: “Going around where?”

Honami: “On the net. If you look up Fujieda’s name, they will instantly pop up.”

Towa: “What’s the origin of the rumors?”

Junko: “An account that calls itself an assembly of Takasato-gumi’s victims.”

Rei: “Assembly of victims? What do you mean?”

Arata: “How is this related to Fujieda?”

Honami: “You see this is not a recent thing. Igarashi-kun, Fujieda-san was once the lawyer of the Takasato-gumi, right?”

Igarashi: “Yes!”

Rei: “…”

Junko: “And this account is packed full of claims about Fujieda engaging in malicious practices and letting innocent people suffer to make Takasato-gumi win trials. And their posts are spreading super fast.”

Honami: “I saw someone wrote how his current behavior is just out of self-protection and there is surely something behind it. Hey Igarashi-kun, do you know something about this?”

Igarashi: “Aah...I wonder. I don’t really get that kind of thing.”

Arata: “Do you know about it, Towa?”

Towa: “I didn’t see the content, so I know nothing.”

Junko: “I don’t know about the past, but isn’t Fujieda doing his very best for the city right now?”  

Honami: “Right. Even if the rumors were true, if you would apologize to these victims wouldn’t they forgive him?”

Arata: “Fujieda-san is really working hard for Shinkoumi, right?”

Rei: “Yeah. He even helped out Taku in various ways.”

Honami: “Right?”

Rei: “But Towa, is Fujieda-san really okay? Was he attacked by someone?”

Junko: “Wait, listen! I was attacked by a strange man yesterday!”

Rei: “Eh? You were?”

Junko: “That’s right. On my way home, a man came suddenly came out of the darkness with a cutter raised above his head and went after me! But it felt like he wasn’t used to it and got cold feet, so I slapped him in the face once and escaped instantly.”

Honami: “That’s our Junko.”

Junko: “Leave it to me!”

Igarashi. “Whoa…Impressive muscle.”

Rei: “But I’m glad you didn’t get hurt.”

Arata: “Really.”

Towa: “…”

Towa: “You’re home? So early today.”

Fujieda: “…”

Towa: “Did something happen?”

Fujieda: “The client I had my appointment today was admitted to the hospital, it seems he got into an accident.”

Towa: “So that’s why you came back earlier?”

Fujieda: “And that’s not all. The person who offered to help me 2 days ago almost got hit by a car.”

Towa: “…You mean?”

Fujieda: “Yeah, it doesn’t seem to be a coincidence.  It’s reasonable to assume that someone is doing this deliberately.”

Towa: “Do you have any idea about who it could be?”

Fujieda: “From the criminal techniques we’ve seen until now, I can only think it’s the Takasato-gumi. Igarashi-kun doesn’t seem to know anything, but it won’t be odd for there to be members who know the real reason why the group suddenly fell apart.”

Towa: “There was a silent call at Roost today, and Junko reported being attacked by a man.”

Fujieda: “Any injury?”

Towa: “No. The man apparently had a cutter, but he got cold feet and ended up being slapped instead.”

Fujieda: “I see.”

Towa: “Is this also related?”

Fujieda: “He got cold feet, right? Listening to this makes me think it wasn’t the Takasato-gumi, but…”

Towa: “What’s wrong?”

Fujieda: “No. I’ve become self-aware that my name lately has taken on its own life and been spreading strangely in society. There is a lot of resentment in this line of work, after all.”

Rei: “Seems like it but looks like the flames are already extinguished.”

Rei: “It was after closing time, so it was only the manager. He is unharmed.”

Roost Manager: “Well, that surely surprised me.”

Rei: “Manager!”

Roost Manager: “When I wanted to go to the staffroom, I saw the end of the corridor burning. Looks like they lit a cloth dipped in oil and threw it through the back door.”

Fujieda: “Could you extinguish it straight away?”

Roost Manger: “Yes. The floor and wall burned a little but I’m glad nothing else happened. But it was my fault for leaving the backdoor unlocked after coming in.”

Rei: “I’m so glad that it didn’t turn into a major fire. Junko and the others said they will come later too.”

Roost Manager: “I’m sorry for worrying everyone.”

Rei: “It’s fine.”

Igarashi: “Is everyone alright?”

Rei: “Igarashi-kun?”

Igarashi: “I heard there was a fire at Roost, so I hurried over here. How’s the store? Any injuries?”

Roost Manager: “There was no big damage and no one was hurt. Thank you.”

Igarashi: “I- I’m glad.”

Towa: “Manager, what about the culprit?”

Roost Manager: “Doesn’t seem like they caught him yet.”

Igarashi: “The cause was a Molotov cocktail?”

Roost Manager: “No no, if it was, we would be in more trouble.”

Igarashi: “Yeah…that’s true.”

Towa: “Igarashi, do you know anything?”

Igarashi: “Ah…nope.”

Towa: “…?”

Fujieda: “Manager, if this is some sort of harassment, it won’t end with only this. Please be careful somehow, Izumi-san, Igarashi-kun too.”

Roost Manger: “Harassment, huh? Sure, I’ll be careful.”

Rei: “Right.”

Fujieda: “Towa.”

Towa: “What’s wrong?”

Fujieda: “Have you noticed anything different?”

Towa: “Not really. Did something happen again?”

Fujieda: “This morning I went to the apartment of a client who wanted advice regarding the procedure of acquisition of a family register. When I went to the elevator hallway after the conversation ended, there was a letter lying on the floor.”

Towa: “Letter?”  

Fujieda: “Fujieda. For all the people to whom you brought sorrow, the ones around you will experience sorrow too.”

Towa: “A threat letter?”

Fujieda: “Yeah.”

Towa: “Since it had your name clearly written on it, someone knew you would come here, so they left the letter on the floor.”

Fujieda: “That’s right.”

Towa: “Lately, something has been happening almost every day. Is it the Takasato-gumi?”

Fujieda: “About this… I have… some weird feelings about it.”

Towa: “Weird feelings?”

Fujieda: “The harassment toward me was only the silent calls in the beginning and this threat letter. But a number of different things are happening to the people around me, and now it feels like it’s the doing of a gangster organization but at the same time also not. I know that there are people who have a grudge against me, and there aren’t only a few. That’s why it isn’t strange for me to go through some harassment, but this…”

Towa: “You mean someone is involving the people around you on purpose?”

Fujieda: “I don’t know yet how many are involved in this. But regardless of whether it’s the doing of an individual or several, I’m certain they are deliberately targeting everyone except me, who is actually involved.”

Towa: “…”

Fujieda: “The ones around you will experience sorrow too…What has been happening around me is something that should have been my responsibility from the beginning…Towa, this has no connection to you. For you to not get involved into this any further, it’s better for us to separate for some time.”

Fujieda: “Izumi-san, are you okay?”

Towa: “Any injury?”

Rei: “I just twisted my foot a little and got some scratches… I’m sorry for making you worry. I will be released soon, so don’t worry about it.”

Towa: “Okay.”

Rei: “Fujieda-san, today is Taku’s trial right? Do you have to go?”

Fujieda: “There is still time left.”

Rei: “I see…I’m really sorry.”

Towa: “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Rei: “No…It really is terrible. They hit me and fled.”

Fujieda: “Hit you and fled?”

Rei: “When I was riding my bike, a car suddenly rushed towards me from the side and I couldn’t avoid it. But it’s fine. There were eyewitnesses so I’m sure the culprit will be caught soon.”

Fujieda: “…”

Rei: “Roost almost caught fire, Junko was attacked…Why do all these bad things keep piling up?”

Fujieda: “I’m sorry, I need to make a call. Towa, can you come with me?”

Towa: “Yeah.”

Towa: “What’s wrong?”

Fujieda: “It was my fault that Izumi-san was involved in this.”

Towa: “We don’t know for certain yet.”

Fujieda: “The chance is very high.”

Towa: “…”

Fujieda: “The incident this time happened in broad daylight, that’s not something a pro like the Takasato-gumi would do. They didn’t have any intention to kill him, but still…this means that the culprit holds an extremely strong grudge against me.”

Towa: “You mean it’s a civilian?”

Fujieda: “There is a chance that it’s someone who lost a court case against the person I was responsible for in the past.”

Towa: “Lost court case…The assembly of victims who’re spreading rumors about you?”

Fujieda: “Yes. I wasn’t only responsible for cases related to gangster organizations, but also involving ordinary people. There must have been people whose life had taken a turn for the worse after the trial.”

Towa: “In short, you’re being resented unreasonably?”

Fujieda: “From their point of view, it makes sense for them to hold a grudge.”

Towa: “…”

Fujieda: “Back then I certainly used forceful methods to win. To find out about Mei’s whereabouts, I needed to establish myself first.”

Towa: “Do you have any specific idea about who this culprit could be?”

Fujieda: “No. The number of possible suspects isn’t small, after all.”

Towa: “…”

Fujieda: “I have…to pay for my own mistakes. Even if it was for Mei, my reckless actions are what brought upon this result. I even let you remember painful memories. It would be one thing if this only affected myself, but I’m reluctant to involve people who have nothing to do with this.”

Towa: “What do you want to do?”

Fujieda: “I’m regretting those days now, and I want to make up for it if I can. But I don’t know how. What should I do? Will the other person understand this?”

Towa: “You have to ask them this yourself.”

Fujieda: “How?

Towa: “There is no other way than to face the leader. And we don’t know yet if it’s really the Takasato-gumi or not.”

Fujieda: “That may be true.”

Towa: “I can’t speak for the others, but I personally don’t mind getting involved.”

Fujieda: “That won’t do. I already hurt you terribly, and I can’t let you get even more hurt.”

Towa: “It’s fine. I’m also involved in the death of Sakaki and your sister’s case. Besides, aren’t we supposed to support each other?”

Fujieda: “…”

Towa: “If you don’t like it, then fine.”

Fujieda: “It’s not like that…. You’re strong after all. I’m grateful that you’re here with me now.”

Towa: “Ha.”

Fujieda: “The rest is…my own problem, I suppose.”

Towa: “He went ahead because of Taku’s trial.”

Rei: “Ah, right…Are you going too?”

Rei: “I’m sorry you and Fujieda-san had to come even though you’re busy.”

Towa: “No, rather he said that he wanted to apologize to you.”

Rei: “No way! He didn’t do anything wrong.”

Towa: “…”

Rei: “But… I thought…Could it be that the silent calls at Roost, Junko being attacked, and me being hit by a car was done by someone who has a grudge against Fujieda-san?”

Towa: “Probably.”

Rei: “I see. Fujieda-san really changed. Before he felt very cold like he was a robot, but I understand now that he actually isn’t that kind of a person. Even with Taku, he is giving all that he has, but that doesn’t mean that his past will be erased because of that. Still, I’m certain he is moving towards the right direction.”

Towa: “…You’re right.”

Rei: “You be careful too.”

Towa: “Yes.”

Two cents of ramblings on: “Bungō Stray Dogs” (Anime) - Season 1...

...and why I recommend it.

WARNINGS: There’s death, mafia (or should I say Yakuza?), human objectification, suicide attempts, murders, terrorist attacks.

The plot in short: Nakajima Atsushi, a teen driven out from an orphanage, rescues Dazai Osamu from drowning. Due to this meeting he learns he has a supernatural ability which transform him into a berserker white tiger in the moonlight. This lead him to join the Armed Detective Agency, an Agency of supernaturally gifted people and to fight other groups of supernaturally gifted men.

HOW DID I STUMBLE INTO IT

Back then I saw the promotional video and it seemed interesting so I decided to try it out.

THINGS YOU MIGHT WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE TACKLING THIS

You might enjoy more the series if you’ve some knowledge of Japanese literature as each character is named after a famous writer and their supernatural abilities are named after their works or something that happened in them (hence the ‘Bungō’ in the title) because characters and abilities are actually inspired by writers and their works.

MY TWO CENTS ON IT

THE SHORT VERSION… or what I can tell you about this while trying to keep spoilers at the very bare minimum.

Opening & ending: The anime uses as opening “Trash Candy” by Granrodeo and as ending “Namae wo Yobu yo” (名前を呼ぶよ ‘I'll call your name’) by Luck Life. I loved both. The opening well work to introduce both the Armed Detective Agency members and the Port Mafia members with some very smart shoots and a good dose of dynamism. The ending also has some clever shoots but focuses mostly on Atsushi, Dazai and Akutagawa, playing on the contrast between Atsushi and Akutagawa and their relation with Dazai, assigning to Atsushi an azure colour while Akutagawa has red. It also plays a lot with the theme of books as it starts with Atsushi reading a book and then we will have various shoots in which we see a book or pages floating in the air. Overall both are very good.

The plot: “Bungō Stray Dogs” is a still ongoing manga, so the series focuses mostly on introducing the main characters and the setting in a series of episodic plots which results in covering the first 4 volumes of the manga… and it does its work well as you easily get how that world work and start to know and like the characters. The mood well alternate from amusing to dramatic to action filled so this is also something worth praising in this series.

The characters: We get to know around 20 characters in 12 episodes, some well enough to find them worth of our love, some instead are just introduced, but they’re all recognizable enough and feel interesting and make us want to know more about them.

The visual: The visual is good, the backgrounds are detailed and well cared for, there’s a good use of lights to create atmosphere, the animation is fluid, the effects when the characters use their special abilities are good. This series as an interesting quirk of using boxes that feel like pages in which one would write a novel to deliver information, writing them as if someone was just typing them inside the boxes. As they don’t fill them with too much info they aren’t annoying. The colouring isn’t bright unless someone is using a special ability, which draws even more attention on it. The character design makes each character very recognizable. Overall it’s all good.

The musical background: Iwasaki Taku created an interesting BGM for the series, but, as far as I’m involved, it’s nothing I really came to love or be impressed with, although it had some good moments.

Overall: It’s an interesting start for a series that’s clearly meant to continue. I think you enjoy it even more if you can get the references between the characters’ name and abilities and the writers and their works but, even if you don’t, it’s still a good work that will intrigue you ad make you long for more

THE LONG VERSION… or what I loved and hated about this with, of course, TONS OF SPOILERS.

Personally I loved Atsushi’s struggle to find a place to belong and his own self worth. He’s a kind and naïve soul but one who can be very capable when put to pressure but, due to his unlucky upbringing, he holds no love for himself and he’s sure he has no worth. Despite this he’s a surprisingly nice person. When we meet him, even though he was starving and homeless, he saved Dazai from drowning. Later, he threw himself on a bomb to protect the others. Then despite being scared and warned of the danger Akutagawa presented, he faced him to protect the Tanizaki siblings. Then, even though he was told not to, he fought Akutagawa again to try to save Kyōka, whom he perceived as similar to himself as she can’t control well her own ability and would like to die so as not to be used as a killer anymore. And when Atsushi decides to give his all he can be a surprisingly good fighter, he’s not skilled just because he uses the power of the tiger but also because he uses his brain when fighting. Long story short, although Atsushi seems weak, he has a great inner strength he uses to help others and is overall awesome.

And of course I love how Kyōka too gains a sense of self worth through her connection to Atsushi and stop wishing for her own death but tries to find a way to live.

Dazai is also an amazing character. He’s amazingly capable, mysterious, funny, suicidal, intelligent, dark, merciless and kind at the same time, his personality having so many facets, so he’s pretty similar to a diamond in a way. He’s complicate and intriguing and make you want to know more about him, a lot more.

Akutagawa is also an interesting character, with so much rage inside him that hides how filled with pain he is, how desperate he is to prove himself to Dazai to the point he’s beyond jealous of Atsushi and fixates on Dazai failing to realize around him there’s people who cares for him like Higuchi. He clearly need to be explored more, as we only seem to graze his own surface but he sure feels interesting.

Special mention for Mori Ōgai, the leader of the Port Mafia, who in the last episode seemed a harmless guy searching for little Elise, and even manages to pass for a good person when he advises Atsushi during his fight with Lucy.

Mori Ōgai: No, boy. Your enemy lies that way. I wouldn’t advise running away in this particular case. Er, that is, if you trust the words of your local neighborhood physician. If you were to believe her words, you’ll forget everything once you leave through that door. You’ll remember neither the enemy’s subterfuge, nor your colleagues in danger. And the enemy will continue to press her attack. I’ll teach you something of use. In game theory the optimal strategy is to launch a total counteroffensive on an enemy who has attacked you. Crush the enemy. Nakajima Atsushi: But how? Mori Ōgai: An arrogant enemy who feels invincible is the most vulnerable opponent of all. And did I hear right, that the ones beyond that door are the very ones who desperately tried to save you when you were taken?

Sure, differently from Atsushi, we could clearly tell he was suspicious as hell when interacting with him and then there’s the fact he scared Lucy to death with just a look, but he still came out as interesting and he even advises Atsushi short after his fight has ended.

Mori Ōgai: Boy… A logical, optimal solution exists in any wartime situation, no matter how difficult the challenge. You must not forget that, especially in times of confusion when you might feel inclined to recklessness.

…and it seems a good advice but… if we scratch at the surface a logical, optimal solution is a cold matter that doesn’t keep into consideration emotions or human lives, which fits with how he is the Port Mafia leader and previously, when he ‘motivated’ Atsushi to fight, he actually manipulated him into doing so.

So yeah, he’s an interesting guy. Well, actually everyone is interesting and I could talk about all of them a lot but I think it’ll be better if I’ll let you discover them.

Overall “Bungō Stray Dogs” is definitely a series worth watching that will give you fun, drama and lot of action as well as a dip into literature. It work well if you want to get into the manga or can be just enjoyed as a stand alone or, maybe, you can move to the next series as this one is just the first series and there are 2 more series (a 4th is also planned), an OAV and a movie. So if you’re just an anime person and not into manga you still have a lot to watch.

BREAKING OVERNIGHT: The 2nd Season of 'Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro' drops a New Trailer at the Crunchyroll Expo 2022

KANAGAWA, JAPAN -- Anime romantic comedy starts with a new production of Oriental Light and Magic Inc. (OLM) from the makers of Pokémon: The SERIES and Komi Can't Communicate in Tokyo as Crunchyroll Expo 2022 officially drops a new trailer at the McEnery Convention Center (MCC) in San Jose, California, United States of America (U.S.A.) last Saturday afternoon (August 6th, 2022 -- Pacific local time).

This was after the 1st season ended with Telecom Animation Film (TAF) and it will be transitioned thru OLM.

Social Media Producer of Crunchyroll named Lauren Moore reveals an official synopsis during Crunchyroll Industry Panel, which is now classified as a 2nd Attack: "A high school girl in the lower grade just made me cry. One day, Naoto Hachiouji (Senpai) visits the library after school and becomes a target of a super sadistic junior. The name of the girl who teases torment and tantalizes Naoto is Hayase Nagatoro. She's annoying, yet adorable, it's painful, but you still wanna be by her side. This is her story about an extremely sadistic and temperamental girl and you feel something awaken inside you in Kazehaya High School (KHS)".

It was based from a Japanese web manga series written and illustrated by "Nanashi", who was bought its rights from the makers of Tokyo Mew Mew (to name a few) known as Kodansha after it was serialized with the Magazine Pocket. The manga began in November 2017 and has 13 tankoubon volumes as of April 2022.

Before the actual anime in Season 1, s*x and r*ci*l issues have gone dumpster fire with the toxicity of excessive hate trolls (excluding almost for a manga), according to a new study from Anime Motivation. Cancel culture is a contagious territory and to break its relationship for good without any explanation or reason per internet politics of epidemic censorship.

Hayase Nagatoro's voice actress named Uesaka Sumire has a special message to acknowledge all the Crunchyroll fans, "Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro; popular on Crunchyroll is getting a 2nd season starting in January 2023! I'm already excited. You'll see my voice as Nagatoro, Naoto (Senpai), their friends and more, including the club president (Sana Sunomiya). It's going to be a big crowd. Previous character designer (Misaki Suzuki), series composer and scriptwriter (Taku Kishimoto), and music composer of Busted Rose named Gin are reprising their roles. Shinji Ushiro is the only director of this anime for Nagatoro in Season 2.

It was meant to be posted for a previous milestone but it was delayed, but here it is now jbhjfb I may have gotten carried away with this when I first thought of the AU;;; also !! special thanks to ghostie and rui for helping me with this. If you see this, ily !! this also a three way collab with sven and @xxunrxvelingxx !! please check out their fics when they post it hehe~ they’ll be making separate fics that will go along with our agreed theme which is legends and myths from our home countries. In my case, this was inspired by the story of Maria Makiling!

 "I have provided you everything the mountain has to offer and yet you greedy humans still want more?“ The thunder boomed, matching your footsteps as you made your way to sit on a log stool. Crossing your legs, you said, “I’ve had enough of you humans trying to steal my valuables.” Rain suddenly started to pour down, soaking the four men standing in front of the mountain deity. 

They were shaking in fear as they saw the look you were giving them, they heard that you were usually a gentle and kind person who had never laid a hand on the village folk who lived on the mountain. They scrambled to their feet, with pitiful expressions on their faces as they desperately tried to run away. You made no effort to chase them as you already knew  there was no way they would make it back alive. This mountain is your domain, surely they would get lost  and stay trapped here forever. 

You were usually a kind being but you would spare no mercy for those who enter the mountain with malicious intentions. The locals knew better than to do that but — unfortunately, those men who tried to steal from you were foreigners.

           Your rage didn’t go away instead, it had gotten stronger. The rain was getting heavier, a flood was ready to form and an earthquake was about to start. There was no room for the village folk inside your head, your rage had overruled every moral you once upheld. It was cruel of you to bring these disasters to  innocent people — however, nobody would dare to cross you ever again. They knew that  angering a deity was never a bright idea, especially if they still had plans to live.

“Hah… Foolish humans..! Always scurrying around, striving to attack me and rob me of my riches. In the end, they’ll just meet their doom.”

There was something off about the man who entered the mountain. It seemed like he was struggling to walk. The rage you felt days ago has now disappeared and you felt the need to help the struggling man. You jumped off a tree branch you were sitting on to get a better look on his face — heterochromic eyes, it was unusual to see those  around here, especially when you had isolated yourself in the mountains. He had teal hair with a darker and longer strand framing the left side of his face. He was beautiful, your breath was taken away the moment you laid your eyes upon him.

Then you finally decide to appear in front of him. His senses did not pick up your presence since he was too busy trying to regain his balance. When he finally looked ahead and saw you, his eyes  widened and  slipped.

“Ah-!” He was about to fall. He still wasn’t used to being able to walk on land, his balance was still sloppy and the way he walked was unnatural. Ever since his tail turned into human legs, he’s been walking aimlessly on land with nothing but a dirty tunic on. He had nobody to teach him about how land folks act or lived, he quickly became an outcast among the villagers by the mountain, which sparked your curiosity. 

“..! Be more careful!” You grabbed his hand before he could fall, pulling him up to safety. He finally got a proper look at his saviour and the sight took his breath away. Were you the mountain deity they talked about back in the village? He kept a straight face while trying to connect the dots in his head. Weren’t you the reason he tried to climb the mountain? The blue haired man couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle, “Forgive me, it seems that I’m still not accustomed to my newly acquired legs.” He spoke in a gentlemanly manner which surprises you. Maybe it was because of his dirty tunic that you thought  he was going to be a bit more rough around the edges. You knew it was bad to judge a book by its cover and yet you still couldn’t help but do it anyway.

           “What’s your name?” The cold tone in your voice sent shivers to the man’s spine, surely you had the aura of a deity! He heard the rumours about the gentle and kind lady up in the mountains, but it seemed like you were still kind of ticked off by the last incident he heard about. The man put his hand by his chest and introduced himself with a smile, “I go by Jade, Jade Leech. Would the lovely lady also do  the honor of giving me her name?” It was faint but you noticed it — he was dangerous. 

It didn’t take long for you to become attached to Jade, he charmed you the moment  you met. Your first meeting consisted of you asking Jade a few questions about himself while walking through the woods. You discovered that Jade originally had no legs, thus his lack of ability to be able to walk properly. You offered him help and thankfully, he was a fast learner when provided with guidance. In less than a day, he had already mastered how to walk with his own two legs. 

You were bound to the mountain, you could never leave because you are its guardian. Shall you ever try to leave, your body would run out of oxygen and pass. It seems like Jade was a little fond of your company as he went back up in the mountains the following day.

He was still wearing the dirty tunic when he came to visit you today, you had seen this coming so you had a nearby pixie fetch you some clothes for the tall man. When you handed the clothes to him, he couldn’t help but let out a small laugh, he was intimidated by your cold demeanor yesterday but today it seemed like you were finally fitting the positive rumours surrounding you. A kind and gentle lady who would often go to the village to give your blessings. “Thank you,” Jade hummed out, straying far from you to change into the clothes you gave him. You felt your cheeks flare up a bit when he gave you a smile. You couldn’t help but wonder how this blooming friendship of yours would end. After all, he’s just a mortal, isn’t he? 

28 days remain.

“Oya, a new mushroom to add my collection.” Jade was delighted as he crouched down to examine the newly found mushrooms on the ground. You mentally compare the current Jade you know to the Jade you first met — it seemed like he was an entirely different person. He picks up land dwellers’ qualities and habits fast and now you wouldn’t even dare think about how this man didn’t know how to walk properly just a week ago!

You tried to introduce him to a lot of things the mountain has to offer and yet somehow, he found himself climbing up the mountain on a daily basis just to see you. The village folk were a bit skeptical due to his odd behavior and at his sudden transformation, but they soon dropped the gossip when someone told them the both of you were lovers. It was a ridiculous thought but you never said anything when you saw how they had treated Jade better. 

The more time you spent with him, the more you felt these complicated feelings, like your heart was tied to a knot. The way he smiled at you made it feel like your heart was being squeezed, and the way his eyes sparkled when he talked about mushrooms was simply too adorable! You noticed all the little things about Jade and it made you wonder about how you were going to label these feelings you have for him. You liked to believe that you know everything about the world, but the world loves proving you wrong. You were still naive, even if you are a deity.

21 days remain.

“You’ve gotten better at acting like a land dweller.” Your cold tone made it clear to Jade that something definitely happened to piss you off while he was away. Perhaps it was another human trying to rob you of your riches? Or to take your head as a trophy? No. Jade shook his head at the thought of someone trying to harm you. After all, it is impossible to do so. 

For the past few weeks, he has somehow grown accustomed to your sudden coldness and harsh tones. The people that heard of the mountain deity’s treasures have increased and were bold enough to challenge themselves against you. They gathered into groups and shouted out insults directed at you. You had neither time nor patience to deal with every pest that was bold enough to threaten you, so you had the mountain itself deal with them. If they entered the mountain, they would surely get lost and never be seen again due to natural reasons. 

The only reason why Jade and a few villagers were able to enter the mountain and get back unharmed is because you let them. The moment you sense malicious intent directed at you — they would be disposed of. You were merciless when it came to matters regarding your life and the state of the mountain. Jade knew that, both of you spent enough time together for him to know these kinds of things. With slow steps, Jade approached you, his usual smile was absent and this surprised you a bit. His expression was serious while cupping your cheek with his bare hands, it was warm. You found yourself rub your cheek against his comforting touch, he knew exactly what you were feeling and this reassured you. Jade pulled back his hand and placed it on your head instead, ruffling your hair a bit, “Have you been resting well?”

Truth be told, you haven’t gotten a wink of sleep ever since the attacks increased. Your guard was always up and a chance to sleep never came. However, when Jade ruffled your hair, every muscle in your body relaxed, you fought the urge to close your eyes. Jade didn’t fail to notice your tired state and sat beside you on the log stool that was big enough to hold the two of you. He made you lean against his broad shoulder while stroking your head, his comforting touch making you go closer and closer to your desired rest. You closed your eyes and drifted into sleep, not hearing Jade’s endearing words “Sleep well, My beloved.”

14 days remain.

“Have you done it yet?” Jade entered his temporary lodging to see a beautiful young woman with long black hair sitting on his bed. Jade’s warm eyes turned cold as he glared at the woman who intruded his home. Jade didn’t bother to put up the gentlemanly act anymore. He lunged forward towards the woman and wrapped his fingers around her neck, lifting her smaller figure up in the air as Jade squeezed her neck. The woman was letting out choked noises as Jade continued to give her a cold glare. “W-Wait!” She managed to let out a word, Jade stopped for a moment. “You still need me, you can’t kill me.” The panicked and pained expression on the woman’s face brought immense pleasure to Jade. Oh how he loathed this woman! Jade was ready to snap her neck, staring coldly into her eyes as he squeezed her neck a bit more before suddenly letting go. The woman fell to the ground, hacking out coughs as she tried to regain oxygen in her system. Jade’s unusual rage has calmed down a bit after thinking rationally, he went into his kitchen and brought out some teacups, “Would you like some tea?”

The sweet aroma filled the cozy house as Jade delicately poured tea into the teacups. The woman sitting across him had a suspicious look, staring at the teacup. “Oh, please go ahead. Don’t be shy.” Jade insisted, an eerily calm smile decorating his face, as though the earlier events hadn’t happened at all. “It’s not poisoned, is it? I know how badly you want me dead but,” the woman pushed away the teacup, crossing her legs and arms as a confident look suddenly decorated her face. “If you still want your precious twin brother to live, I suggest you shouldn’t kill me.” Jade’s gentlemanly smile curled up into a big smirk as he set down his teacup, “And what made you think that I still needed you to do so? You’re basically useless.“ 

For a moment, the woman shot Jade a terrified look. She knew that Jade was capable of killing her at any given time, she had to think of an excuse to stay alive. “You won’t be able to use the deity’s heart to cure Floyd without me.” It was true. Even if Jade has gotten the deity’s heart right in his palms, he wouldn’t be able to use it to treat Floyd’s condition. Jade frowned upon hearing the words ‘deity’s heart’. It was the only reason why Jade approached you, he was skillful in deceiving others and masking his true intentions. Though it seemed like his mask was slowly breaking the more time he spent with you. It was true that he was fond of you — very fond but Jade wouldn’t allow himself to admit the feelings he held for you. 

If he ever admitted to himself that he fell in love with you, it would just pain him more thinking about the cruel acts he was about to commit. “I’m close to obtaining her heart. Once I get my hands on it, we’re going back to the Coral Sea immediately.” His monotonous voice scared the woman a bit, how could he be so calm when he’s about to betray a deity? “Got it, witch?” Jade coldly asked the woman. The said woman snapped out of her daze and refuted, “Don’t call me that, I told you, my name is-" 

"Do I look like I care?”

7 days remain.

“Dancing? When did you learn how to dance, Jade?” Jade only let out a mere chuckle as you gave him a curious glance. You looked better than before — the color of your face was slowly coming back thanks to Jade. His presence soothed you and you couldn’t help but let your guard down — you trust him. It has only been a month since the two of you met but you would already trust him with your life. What is this feeling…? What did humans call it again? Attachment..? Or was it fondness…or love? You didn’t know the answer. The moonlight shined upon both of your figures sitting down on the grass. “Do you underestimate me that much?” A teasing smirk appeared on his face, you panicked for a moment because deep down, you actually did underestimate him a bit. You looked away from him, a light hue of pink dusting your cheeks. Shame rising up from the pit of your stomach.

“Oh my, it seems like I’ve gotten my answer. It’d be a lie if I said I wasn’t disappointed.” Jade faked tears, wiping them away dramatically as you giggled at his actions. Jade stood up from the grass, his polite smile never disappearing from his face. Even though he gave everyone that smile, you couldn’t help but feel like there was an underlying tone of feelings and affection he held for you. Yet, you brushed it off like it was nothing — still denying the fact that you were indeed falling in love with him. Jade outstretched his hand towards you, trying to help you up. At that moment, you couldn’t help but think that you were becoming so helpless around him. 

Hesitantly, you took his hand as he helped you up to your feet. You stumbled forward a bit and lost your footing, almost falling had it not been for Jade who catched you before you fell. “Careful!” He warned you, wrapping his arms around your figure as you steadied your balance. You could feel his heart beating, you closed your eyes and allowed your head to lean into his chest — listening to nothing but the beat of his heart. Is this what it means to fall in love? Jade was taken aback for a moment, he didn’t expect you to suddenly rest your head against his chest while standing up. He let out a sigh as he wrapped his arms tighter around you, his gaze filled with an unexplainable fondness. Oh how he wished this moment lasted forever. 

3 days remain

It was dangerous and weak of you to allow yourself to be comforted by the presence of a mere mortal, even the forest pixies told you this themselves. It was a huge mess in the mountains when Jade wasn’t here. You suddenly felt sad at the thought of the earlier events.

“Lady (Y/N)! Forgive our insolence but we are begging you to cut ties with that mortal.” the pixies bowed down, they didn’t dare to look into your eyes — fear evident in their expressions. The pixie who talked to you, Daphne, was the wisest of the bunch — she had stayed in the mountain for far longer than you have. It was safe to say that she was wiser than you but the one who holds the most power was you — the mountain deity. Daphne didn’t have a single hint of fear on her face as she held her head up high, her blue locks tucked behind her pointed ear as she stared at you. 

Rage coursed through every part of your body as your harmless gaze at them suddenly turned hostile. The gravity suddenly weighed down on all of them, forcing them onto their knees except Daphne. Had it not been for her power she accumulated during the years she had lived, she would be most likely on her knees as well. “What did you just say, Daphne?” Your mind wasn’t in its best state due to the responsibilities you had to fulfill doubled, every living being in the mountain knew that and they could see how stressed you were through the mountain’s state. They noticed how the mountain would flourish a little whenever a certain teal haired mortal decided to visit you, they knew that he was a double edged sword to their deity. Though they knew that he was a potential threat to you, when they saw how happy you looked when you’re with him, they couldn’t help but let the both of you be. 

“That mortal man named Jade- He’s not what you think he is.” Daphne calmly responded, she’d been suspicious of him from the very beginning. Those words made the raging flames in your heart burn stronger. You knew deep inside that she was right. You knew he held ill intent from the moment you first met yet you just- You just blindly ignored it like the fool you were. Yet you were reminded of the way he called you his beloved when he thought you were fast asleep, it was one of your sweetest memories with him. You can’t allow yourself to believe that the gentle fondness in his voice that night was all fake.

“He’s after your heart.” 

Those words pierced you right through the heart, uncontrollable tears suddenly forming at the corner of your eyes. You wanted to tell them that he was a good man, that he loved you. Your gaze dropped down to the ground, unable to say anything. The mountain spoke for you. The flowers were withering at a lightning fast speed and so did the trees. The wild animals, some died and some were dying. The waters were drying up, and the ground was ready to collapse any time soon. You wanted to cry. Memories of last night came flooding back. The way he held you so close to him, when you listened to his heartbeat? It was all an act to get your heart?

Daphne wasn’t telling her the whole story, she just wanted Jade gone. She left out the part about Jade’s brother because she knew that being the lovesick fool you were — you would gladly give up your heart to him. She decided to fan the flames, “I… also saw a black haired woman in his house.” Daphne cringed at herself, she couldn’t believe what she was about to say. She glanced at your forlorn expression before continuing, “I think she might be his lover.” Everything seemed to stop at that very moment. You stopped wasting your tears, the thunder clapped. Daphne knew she messed up when she saw your expression — filled with burning rage. 

“It’s for his dying brother.” A small pixie speaked out, receiving a harsh glare from Daphne when she did.

“Flora! You…!” 

Everything stopped for a moment, you held a confused expression on your face as you signalled the small pixie named Flora to inch closer to you. You had hope that everything wasn’t a lie. There was nothing more you’ve ever wanted. You desperately wanted to believe that Jade wasn’t a cold blooded jerk that only approached you for your heart. “Tell me about his brother.” Your weak commanding tone made Flora’s heart shatter into pieces, she could tell how much pain you were in. Meekly, Flora started to explain to you the things she saw and heard when she went to follow Jade to the village; the black haired woman who was waiting for him at his home, the way how Jade choked her, the hateful expression on his face, the things they discussed over tea, and how Jade needed your heart to cure his poisoned twin brother. Flora didn’t leave out the fact that the woman with Jade was actually the one who poisoned his brother and how there were only a few days left before Jade goes back to his hometown.

You were oddly happy. Happy by the fact that everything might not turn out to be a lie and that the Jade you were so fond of was real. Though you were laughable, you were an idiot in love. Love…? Is this what they call this feeling? You loved Jade to the point that you forgave him. Even if he didn’t confess himself, you were willing to forgive him over and over again. You were a fool. The biggest fool in the whole damn mountain. Though if it was for Jade, the man who taught you love and the first man you ever loved, you didn’t mind being called a lovesick fool who ruined her own life.  

2 days left

Jade was running out of time, he could feel his lungs having difficulty trying to breathe as he climbed the mountain. The potion was wearing off and he needed to get your heart and return to the sea now — but he didn’t want to leave, he didn’t want his time with you to end just yet. He wanted more time with you. However,  his brother comes first before anything else, including you. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he just abandoned Floyd just like that — it would be unacceptable. Jade’s heart was in deep turmoil as he took a step after the other, why didn’t he.. want to leave you? He stopped in his tracks, his hand clutching his chest tightly as he felt like his heart was being squeezed. He didn’t want to admit it — he would never. If he did, he would never be able to go back to the sea. He continued walking towards your usual meeting area. 

The frown on his face immediately lightened up into a small smile when he saw your figure fiddling with a bunch of leaves. As he went closer, he could notice that you were crying. He kneeled down next to you and asked, “…Are you okay?” gently, Jade tried to place his hand on your shoulder as a form of comfort. You flinched, moving back a bit from his touch and accidentally hitting your head against a tree branch in the process. Jade quickly tried to pull you close to him to inspect what might be a wound on your head. Yet you- you desperately tried to avoid any form of contact with him, your lips sealed shut as you walked away from him to sit on a stone stool. Jade’s heart broke a little. 

You were still trying to compose yourself, tomorrow was your last day with him. You could already see him getting paler and weaker, his withdrawals were getting worse. You needed to think of something, anything. You were going to let him go today, he can have more time to go back to the sea. So he can live. Yet a huge part of you is screaming ‘Don’t!’ You felt weak and afraid, you didn’t know what choice to make but deep down you knew what was the right decision. Mustering up enough courage, your breath shaky, you spoke up. “Jade." 

Jade had never heard you sound so helpless, your voice was shaking, eyes brimming with tears. What happened to you? It was a bit of a shock, for you to call out his voice with such a painfully sad expression on your face. He wanted to know how he could make you feel better, he was about to wrap his arms around you again but he quickly retracted his arm when he remembered how you reacted earlier. So he kept his distance. "Yes…?” He anticipated your next words, hands shaking — his body was slowly turning back. He needed water but he forced himself to stay still and endure the painful withdrawal that came with it. 

You clasped your hands together, muttering a short chant under your breath as something in between your hands started to glow. A single shard of what seemed to be like a gemstone — a piece of jade. It was your heart, clearly influenced by your undeniable feelings for this man you met less than a month ago. Your jaded heart, it was what Jade was after all this time. Once it was in your hands, you clasped it tightly one more time before facing Jade. Tears blurring your vision, “Just… take it.”

Jade’s blood went cold, how…? Did you finally figure out his true intentions? Are you mad? Countless questions popped up inside his mind and his heart rate going faster by the second as he tried to make sense of the situation. Will he lie one more time? Or will he grab the golden opportunity in front of him? Before he could make a decision, he abandoned all sense of reason and pulled you into a passionate kiss. You were caught off guard, yet you kissed him back without any hint of hesitation at all. Your faces so close — your tears started to mix and you didn’t want to let go of him. Neither did he. After pulling away from your heated kiss, he finally managed to mutter out the words he was so afraid of saying. 

“I love you.”

1 day remains

The cool breeze caressed Jade’s cheek as he ran through the forest, your heart grasped tightly in his hand as he desperately gasped for air. He needed to get back, now. The black haired woman from the other day was already ahead of him, looking back occasionally at Jade to make sure he wasn’t dead from the withdrawal symptoms. Memories of last night weighed so much in Jade’s mind, he felt like he was choking as he ran — his legs heavy as he started to sweat more than usual. Yet he didn’t stop running, you gave him this chance to let him and his brother live and he was not about to let it go to waste. He ran and ran and ran until he could finally see the sea. 

Jade immediately jumped into the water, taking in the familiar feeling of being submerged in water once again — not once did his grip loosen around your heart. He allowed himself to breathe for a moment, letting the transformation take its place as his legs turned into a tail. He was slowly letting himself sink to the bottom of the sea, nobody could tell that he was crying from the wet environment of the sea. 

One look at Jade and you can immediately tell that he was empty, void of emotion as he stared at your heart — placing a gentle kiss on it as he muttered under his breath, “Perhaps in another life, we could be lovers once again." 

This is a story about how a foolish mountain deity sacrificed her heart, the very core of her being, to a mere mortal. A story about how cruel fate can be, and how it ruined them. The ending? The mountain deity fell into an eternal slumber after giving her heart up to her lover, unable to wake up after hundreds of years. The mortal man cured his brother and lived a somewhat happy life, longing to see his beloved deity once again on land and was killed after multiple attempts of going to land. 

Perhaps things would’ve been different if they made different choices, perhaps they’d be happily living as a couple now but fate is not so nice, no? There is no happy ending for this disastrous pair, only ruin awaits them if they were to ever meet again in their next lives. They were both fools in the end. 

"Eh~? Jade, Jade~! Did you hear about the transfer student coming today?” Floyd made grabby hands at Jade, excitement bubbling up from the pit of his stomach, will he find another person to squeeze? Jade let out a sigh, seemingly uninterested in the topic but decided to entertain Floyd. “Yes, it does make me feel a bit excited, fufu~”

The class silenced down so quickly, your footsteps towards the class stage could be heard.

“Hello everyone, my name is (Y/N) (L/N)! Nice to meet you all!" 

Jade’s eyes gleamed with growing intrigue, why did you seem familiar to him in some way? He didn’t dwell on that for long though, he just decided that if fate decided to make you a part of his life, then so be it. 

And it begins all over again.

5. Importance of a Character’s Dreams and Motivations

One thing in common with almost all shōnen protagonists are their dreams and their motivations for chasing them. I think this is one of the most important aspects of a character. It helps them feel more three-dimensional and realistic. It is hard to make a great character with no dream or motivation, but it can be pulled off, as shown in Nux Taku’s video on The Genius of Villains without Motives.

 Anyway, to understand and love a character, it is important to grasp an idea of what makes them tick. Here I will provide a couple of examples of characters with ambitious and idealistic goals backed up by a great and understandable motivation. I will also provide an example where a character’s motivation doesn’t feel convincing, and therefore, doesn’t draw as much emotion or commitment to the characters.

Luffy is one of the greatest shōnen protagonists and is my favorite character in anime. His dream is to become the Pirate King. Even though he is a fictional character, we somehow have a deep connection with Luffy.

Oda has managed to portray Luffy as a great man in the series. I don’t think it is merely because he is strong or because he follows his principles, but rather, we can actually feel that only Luffy can be the Pirate King. I believe we feel this way because we see the Pirate King’s title fitting perfectly with Luffy’s character. But to better understand his motivations and character, we need to look to his past.

Luffy is significantly inspired by Shanks, greatly appreciating Shanks’ freedom and the principles he follows. Luffy also has a large amount of respect for his older brother. Sabo decided to sail the seas without money or power, trying to escape the nobility life that imprisoned him. But his journey ended before it had a chance to start due to the Celestial Dragon shooting down his little boat. Here we can see two of the people Luffy respected the most chased their own freedom, and the only thing that opposed that freedom is the world government

Luffy also wants to chase that freedom, but he can’t since the world government is preventing him from chasing that dream. However, Luffy had made this connection that pirates are the freest people on earth; they get to do whatever they wanted with no consequences as long as their strength can back it up. They were also considered enemies of the world government, the very thing Luffy despises. Luffy didn’t only aspire to be like Shanks and Sabo; he didn’t only want to be a simple pirate; he didn’t only seek freedom; he wanted to be the freest man in the entire world while respecting others and following basic morals. If pirates were free and the Pirate King was the greatest pirate, the Pirate King must be the world’s freest man. Therefore, Luffy decided to peruse this freedom by becoming the Pirate King.

Another great example is illustrated with Naruto and Asta. They have very similar dreams of being the most powerful and respected man in their respective country. But, their motivations differ from each other. Their aspirations play a perfect part in their characters and their pasts. Naruto was considered the “devil child” since he was possessed by the Nine-Tails Fox, the deity that once terrorized his entire village. The Fox was to be feared and very dangerous. So the whole village discriminated against him, terrified of him attacking the village at any moment. 

He had no friends, and on top of that, Naruto’s parents died when the Fox was trapped in his body. He wasn’t just discriminated against; he was lonely and wanted respect. Naruto realized that the Hokage is the most respected person in the entire country. So, he aspired to be the Hokage; Naruto just wanted respect and acceptance.

Asta was a commoner with no magic. That’s an absurd thing to think about, simply because there isn’t a single person in the Black Clover world who has no magic. In the world of Black Clover, there are different levels of magic ability: the nobles having the most magic, the middle class having an average amount, and commoners having little to no magic. But Asta has no magic. This means that he is not only disrespected by the nobles and middle class but also by other commoners. Asta wants to prove that with no special abilities, he can be the Wizard King, the most powerful mage in the kingdom. If he accomplishes this, he can prove that even commoners can reach such high standards. With this, he can strive for equality.

All these examples are brilliant. Each example follows on their pasts and makes sense of why they have such high aspirations. Luffy’s goal is to be the Pirate King, and his motivation is freedom. Naruto’s goal is to be the Hokage, and his motivation is respect and acceptance. Asta’s goal is to be the Wizard King, and his motivation is equality and recognition. All of their pasts put them in a situation where their motivation makes sense. This allows us to sympathize with them, understanding them on a different level.

But there are a couple of characters whose motivation I find a bit bland. The biggest offender of this is Itadori Yuji from Jujutsu Kasien. His dream is to become a very strong individual in order to help others. His motivation? His grandfather’s last words.

Now I understand that Itadori had a very close relationship with his grandfather and that his love for him alone is good enough motivation to follow his dream. But first off, it doesn’t even feel like it is Itadori’s dream. He seems to be following someone else desire. If maybe this was something that was ingrained in Itadori’s mind as a child, and we got to see it, his dream would feel a lot more like his own. His motivation would also make more sense. As an example, my parents have always told me to be kind to others, but now it feels more like it’s my own principle, not theirs. I don’t get that same feeling from Itadori’s grandfather’s motivation. Secondly, we don’t even understand Itadori’s connection to his grandfather. If we had a couple of episodes dedicated to showing us their bond and relationship, this would be a different matter. Now, every time I hear Itadori talk about others and how he couldn’t save someone, I end up staring at the screen with a blank face and saying, “Okay…”

To me, his dream is to be strong so that he can help others (I think) and his motivation is his grandfather’s final words which felt nothing short of dumb and ridiculous. We don’t even get to see his past and fully understand if this is something that Itadori always believed. Jujutsu Kaisen only aired 16 episodes and still has time to unfold, so I can understand if there is something that is yet to develop. But so far, Itadori, along with his dreams and motivations, suck.

In my book series, I want to make each character have convincing and understandable dreams and motivations, and I hope to make it similar to Luffy’s, Naruto’s, and Asta’s. You should be careful when making characters.  Having their motivations fall flat can really turn off an audience. I hope to create realistic-feeling characters with dreams and motivations that seem to align perfectly with their character.

Nega Steelbeak sees Andy, a now winged feral monster on all fours growling and roaring in anger, but to Pauly he knows...that is the sounds of pain not anger. He gets up and walks to his love

He is roaring and attacking his captors in anger the anger and dark magic rage

He is overwhelmed by the cheers and yells of the bad men

(whispers) “Who you truly are...gem eyes.”

Andy whimpers “P-pauly…”

Negasteel “Its okay, i got you gem eyes”

Slow Damage review 2.0 Part 1

It’s 16 pages actually 

Hello I’m back and instead of actually writing a new review of a game, or playing a new game that’s a lie I’m playing more than one VN at the same time right now. I’ve been thinking a lot about slow damage lately and wanted to write my full thoughts/analysis on it. For this occasion, I replayed the game. This will be full of spoiler of everything in the game as well as the spoiler of the short story.

Disclaimer: This is MY opinion, I’m not wanting to start a discussion, this is just how I experienced the game. Not everything here will be in a positive light and I don’t hold back from criticize what I didn’t like. This is a fictional game so please don’t attack me. But if you are fine with me babbling 16 pages about the game, you can go ahead. Important to note: Towa is my favourite character, so my thought on the routes are all Towa centered

(I probaly forgot some stuff but please excuse the game is really long)

I will start from the unlocked route and work toward the true route. Starting with Taku~

Taku

After replaying Taku’s route I noticed some differences to my first time playing.

First his route was my second favourite in the game the first time I played it, but replaying it, it was not really interesting anymore. His story is all about him developing drugs for Toono because of his deb he made so he could study to become a doctor, but if you know already about this part there is nothing else to really investigate. His backstory with his mother is ok, he feels guilty for stuff he done in his route but that’s all there is, when you already know the secret Taku is hiding, there is not much left, that’s why is lacks something if you replay it.

The second thing is his relationship with Towa, before I talk about the problem, I personally  have with it I will talk about the things I did like: Taku already was protective of Towa since he was a child, and his feeling developed into more later on, from what Taku said we can assume his feelings turned into “like” after the incident with Asakura. Towa feeling to Taku developed during the time they spent together when they were both locked in the building. Taku was someone he always felt save with, back in his horrible childhood when no one was there for him, only Taku(it was probably the only time he could get away from his crazy mother), and after the fear of losing Taku he noticed he has deeper feelings for him (at this point we can’t say that is romantic love because Towa doesn’t understand this feeling, but Taku is special for him it’s canon don’t attack me). The development part of their feelings was nice and felt pretty realistic. Secondly, I like how they dealt with Taku falling for a guy. Taku said he wasn’t interested in the same gender from the beginning, but he didn’t say stuff like “I’m not gay, I’m straight” or something like that. He just said he is not experienced with it, and he didn’t just go for it after Towa “attacked” him and was still unsure at this point, and only later when he was sure he had romantic felling he went for it, which was quite nice.   Now to for the things that I can’t get over and ruin the relationship for me. First, from the true route we learn that Taku has been lying about Towa past the whole time, (telling him his mother was a great woman) so this relationship is already based on a lie. Towa mother was not a great woman like Taku tells, she is the whole reason Towa has suffered his whole life, and while Taku may not know the everything, he knows what Towa went through but still he keeps his mouth close. There is a scene after the confession scene, where Taku wanted to say something (probably about his past) after they talked about his mother, but decides not to even after Towa asked him about it. In the end after he gets released from prison Towa asked him again and he acts like he has no idea what he is talking about and just says something else. And this brings me to the thing that annoys me the most: How Taku deals with Towa’s mental health problems, or to say it simple, he just doesn’t. The first thing I noticed when I replayed it, Taku is acting like he doesn’t know about it, even though he does. Always saying how Towa behaviour (about him drinking, smoking and sleeping with guys) “was always like this” and saying that “your heart is still dead”. Taku you know exactly how horrible his past is how can you say such stuff??? He always tells Towa how he should stop doing it, but he doesn’t think about doing something to prevent it. I know that he is worried about him but the only thing he deals with are Towas wounds. His wounds may heal but his heart doesn’t if you keep putting only bandages on him Taku. He is really bad at dealing with mental problems, his way to get over it is just not to talk about, in the hope it will go away at some point but in Towa’s case it won’t ever go away, it is destroying him slowly from the inside.

He is also overprotective of Towa in a bad way, putting a chip in Towa after getting rid of Asakuras shitty DIY wings and even going as far as TRYING TO KILL Towa and I though Rei will be the yandere after Tonno tells him he won’t let Towa go after both of the get kidnapped by Toono. I understand that he wants to protect Towa and it is indeed dangerous to let Towa do what he wants because he doesn’t care for himself, but Towa need some kind of freedom, he is not stupid. He acts like Towa is his thing and I didn’t like this part. And the last thing, that left me in a uncomfortable feeling is in the very end he says Towa causes to many problem that why you should not leave him alone, but the goal would actually be to heal Towa to a point, where he does not need help anymore but we never get to it here sadly. (and please stop with the housewife Towa look in the end it hurts my eyes)

I also don’t like the age gap of 20 years in the relationship, because I cant deal with the thought of one person dying way before and leaving the other person behind but that’s a me problem.

The first time I was not sure what to think about Taku’s route but after knowing all this stuff and replaying the route, I just can’t like this pairing sorry.

All the things above are only about Taku and Towa’s relationship, I do like Taku as a person and I enjoyed that he is like a father figure toward Towa and like a family for him. It’s really cute that he really cares for Rei too and treats him like a son better than Rei’s trash father ever could like they are a small family.

Rei

From beginning we get to know Rei as Towa’s and Taku’s best friend, who speaks like a woman and acts a little like it, we also learn that he enjoys fighting and participate in deathmatches. His route is about his struggle with the deb his father (who is a piece of trash) has and his own gender. From the second chapter we learn that Rei is a pure soul, he is a good boy that does not see the bad in human. (Compared to Towa who had a bad feeling from the start) and Rei tells us that in his past he was always mistaken for a girl.

The first time playing his route, the whole thing about his gender felt really sudden but after replaying his route, they were some hints that Rei does struggle with it. Like him telling about his past and him asking Towa what is “manly”. Rei doesn’t want his friends to get involved with his problems that’s why he tries to keep his distance, but Towa is someone he can feel at peace with. Rei’s gender struggle comes from the fact that his parents treat him as a girl when he was a child, it really messed him up because he starts thinking that he was a girl, but still got kicked out by his father after telling him he is gay. Rei hated his own gender even going as far as trying to cut off his… in front of Towa. But through his love for fighting, he realized that he wants to be a man, and after talking (and fighting for fun) with Towa he decides he will now live and act as a man.

Not gonna lie, I really like Rei for his feminine side, though I never thought of him as a woman and while it makes me a little sad that he doesn’t want to be like it, I can accept that he wants to be a man, because in the end the “fem Rei” was never real. He was forced into this feminine roll and that was not the real Rei. What I like about his character is that, while he has his love for violence, he is still a innocent and pure soul. He really cares for others and only wants his best for his friends. (He is also the person, who is looking for true love and doesn’t sleep with others for fun) Even though his father is a big shit he still wants to help his father so he doesn’t start working with child trafficking again. He knows Towa since middle school and was always interested in him, but romantically only after the whole thing with Mizuno, when Towa protected him.

What I really didn’t like the first time I played it is that, while you can really feel that Rei likes Towa, Towa doesn’t share the same strong attraction. It felt more like Towa just agreed to this relationship in the end, but replaying it, I noticed that Towa does care for him in his own way, the first time it’s difficult to say because you don’t understand Towa’s personality. Towa always agrees do help Rei if he asked him for something and he worries about him. The relationship of all the pairings starts at the end of the game so it’s always difficult to say how it works out, but Towa did have a pleasant feeling after Rei’s confession and after they slept together. I want to see more development on Towa’s side because compared to his feeling for Taku in his route it felt weaker with Rei (for me), hopefully they explore it in the drama cd.

While Rei does say some things like Taku to Towa (that I didn’t like) I can’t blame him for it because he doesn’t know Towa’s past.

Regarding  Rei’s personality, I hope they don’t change to much about him, because it would be stupid to make a character and then change him after everyone already start liking him like the way he was. They changed his way of speaking (what you probably won’t notice if you don’t understand Japanese) which if fine, doesn’t bother me but if he will start saying stuff like “I can’t eat cake anymore because only woman do” …. Yeah please no. and he cut his beautiful long hair short noooo and it looks so bad please change it We have to wait and see how Rei’s change will affect him in the end, and I want to see how their relationship will develops  especially on Towa’s side

Madarame

I wanted to replay everything, just to make sure I didn’t forget anything, but with Madarame’s route I just had to give um in the middle. The first time I played it I went through it without problems because I was expecting something from it, sadly it never happened, but this time it was just like playing a never-ending bad end, and I just felt so sad that I had to stop playing. And now I can confidently say, I hate everything about this route. And I did give this route a chance because I don’t like to go into a game thinking I won’t like character, I try my best to understand the story and characters, but it was no use here. I just don’t understand why such a route was needed to for a character like Towa. Knowing how much Towa was abused in the past and that he suffers from extreme mental trauma because of this makes everything worse, this route really brings out the worst of Towa’s mental health issues.

Starting from the beginning we learn that Towa and Madarame used to hang out together and Towa did feel good hanging out with him (they were not in a relationship and there were no romantic feelings which is confirmed). Towa tells us that this was in the past and that he is not this person anymore, also he tells us that he doesn’t like following orders and doesn’t like treatment from Madarame, that’s why dealing with him is hard and after understanding this himself, he wanted to keep his distance. Of course this is not in Madarame’s favour, he want his “pet” all to himself (He even said Towa need an “owner”).So he kidnaps him and tries to break Towa, to let him remember how he used to be. For this he uses violence and treats Towa like shit. We know that he knows about Towa’s abuse in his childhood and still he uses the same horrible methods as Towa’s mother did, taking away his freedom and chaining him to a place, keeping him in silence which he hates. Raping him (of course Towa let it happen because he is used to it) and slowly breaking his mind so Towa starts thinking he needs Madarame. When Towa says something against him, he got angry or just straight up beats him. Towa has no freedom in this “relationship” it only goes the way Mada want it. There is no communication it’s just a typical “alpha male” top and controlled bottom dynamic between them. It was so sad seeing how Towa went against his friends after he spent some time under Madarame’s influence.

In the beginning Towa is so desperate that he would rather die than to be with Madarame, and I don’t know why we have to think this is “romantic” or some shit like that? Its funny how they tried to include them acting like a couple in the second half of the route. Like Madarame said Towa doesn’t need a collar anymore, sure because he is now manipulated into thinking he need Madarame. I will never forgive him for the emotional and physical abuse he let Towa go through in the beginning.

Madarame himself just feels like he is not even human, this guy has no feeling and his feeling for Towa are like a feeling you have for your pet (or better to say animal? Because you would treat your pet better) and he treats him like a pet. (I’m really not a fan of the whole “your mine” “you belong to me” thinking, human are not objects, just because you decide to be with someone doesn’t mean you are their property) I understand they wanted to go for the “he lives in the present not the past and he is honest and doesn’t lie” thing but it made him feel like he has no feeling at all. Showing that he likes cats made no sense to me, because what’s the point if he treats a cat better than Towa? Did they try to make him look like he has a loveable side? Because it sure didn’t feel like it for me. Trying to make abuse ok by showing that this guy likes animals in that case it’s totally ok …yeah sure not.

He really did everything to manipulate Towa into thinking that he needs to be on “this side”, the side that always abused him, by slowly breaking Towa. Towa himself has no understanding for right or wrong, he just does what he thinks is right for him in this moment, that’s how his brain works.  

Madarame says he and Towa are the same because both want violence, but I can only disagree, they couldn’t be any different Towa’s love for violence is a reflection of his abuse as a child, something that was done to him and he now thinks he needs, it’s something he does to try to cope with his trauma, his love for it is not real. While Mada on the other hand, likes it because who knows why it’s not like we ever get to learn anything about this guy because he never says anything. This guy wants nothing and is not interested in anything, I don’t get what I’m supposed to like here. The route ends with Towa and Madarame running away, leaving Towa life, his home and his friends that tried to protect him, to live their life on the streets fighting and enjoying violence, and for me this is the opposite of a good end, it’s just hurt knowing Towa is forever stuck in the circle of violence. (and blond hair really looks bad on him)

I played a lot of bl games and there is always abuse, rape and manipulation involved in almost every bl game, but this has to be the worst case of abuse I ever had to go through and this is coming from a person who likes Mink.

I may said a lot of negative stuff about Taku, but compared to Mada, Taku is an angel send from heaven Funny because Madarame says Taku is trash. The theme was to throw your past away and living in the present, but it felt more like let’s embrace the mental illness and violence.

(the only thing worth going through this hell one time is seeing Mayu, Kotarou and Towa in a suit, especially Towa looks very hot, boi)

The route had an interesting start, and they had a good backstory to write something good with all the stuff with Kaga and so one, but they did absolutely nothing with it and chose to make it about abuse, rape and manipulation, the easy way to force a “romance”(because there is no) into it, and in the year 2021 I expect just something better from it, consider how well the rest of the game is written. N+C really had to bring this rape abuse combination back, didn’t they? They got rid of some bl clichés and I’m thankful for it but we are only half through it, they still need time.

The route just felt extremely disappointing and made me feel horrible.

Orcas VS Humans

In the wild, despite centuries of sharing the ocean, there has only been one reliable report of an orca injuring a human being. The attack occurred on September 9, 1972, when 18-year-old Hans Kretschmer was bitten by an orca whilst surfing at Point Sur. Kretschmer noticed some sea lions playing in the waves prior to the attack, leading him to believe the sudden nudge he received was a curious sea lion. When he turned to look at the instigator, he realised he was terribly mistaken. A six-meter-long killer whale had bitten down on his leg with incredible force. In an attempt to defend himself, Kretschmer punched the animal repeatedly, causing it to suddenly let him go. Once free, the shock-ridden surfer desperately swam 40 meters to shore, a swim which he survived. Upon seeking medical attention, Kretschmer’s doctor commented: “it looks like someone chopped your leg with a sharp axe.”

The injury he sustained was just as graphic with three teeth penetrating bone: narrowly missing a major artery with surgical precision. It required 100 stitches to fix. Although Hans Kretschmer holds the title as the only human being to be seriously injured by a wild orca, there have been five other incidents between humans and wild orcas.

​

In the early 1910s, a pod of Antarctic type B killer whales, otherwise known as pack ice orcas, attempted to tip an ice floe on which a Terra Nova Expedition photographer and a sledge dog team were standing. Pack ice orcas specialize in hunting seals by wave-washing them off ice floes. Witnesses theorized the orcas mistakenly identified the barking dogs as a family of seals and initiated their unique hunting technique. Fortunately, no one was injured.

A few months before the attack on Hans Kretschmer in September 1972, Dougal Robertson’s 43-foot wooden schooner, named Lucette (Lucy), was damaged by a pod of killer whales and sunk 200 miles west of the Galapagos Islands on June 15, 1972. Everyone on board managed to escape on an inflatable life raft and a solid-hull dinghy. After 38 days as castaways, the small group of people was sighted and rescued by the Japanese fishing trawler Tokamaru. No one was injured.

Almost 33 years later, in August 2005, 12-year-old Ellis Miller was swimming in 4ft deep water in Helm Bay, near Ketchikan, Alaska, when he was nudged by a 25ft transient killer whale. The whale bumped Miller on the left side of his chest and shoulder, then arched around him before returning to deeper waters. Experts believe the orca mistakenly identified the boy as a splashing harbor seal (which frequent the bay’s waters) then realized its mistake and aborted the attack. Miller did not sustain any injuries.

In 2011, two crew members of the BBC’s documentary Frozen Planet were targeted by a group of orcas who attempted to swamp their 18-foot zodiac boat with a wave washing technique. The crew filmed over 20 different attacks on seals using this technique within a 14-day period, unaware the pod would test it out on them too. The orcas were described as very tolerant to the filmmakers’ presence, and their attacks on seals were described as training exercises for young calves in the group. Perhaps the pod was making use of this new, more challenging “ice floe” to test their attentive youngsters. Regardless, no one was injured. Watch the incident below:

The most recent incident occurred on February 10, 2014. Whilst free diving in Horahora Estuary, near Whangarei in northern New Zealand, 23-year old Levi Gavin was suddenly approached by an orca who grabbed a catch bag (filled with crayfish) attached to his arm and pulled him beneath the surface. Gavin was dragged for 40 seconds when the rope attaching his arm to the bag finally became loose and he was able to escape. Although his arm became numb, he managed to float to the surface by removing his weighted belt and was aided by his cousin who brought him to some nearby rocks. Once his arm regained feeling and strength, Gavin went to Whangarei Hospital where it was established he did not sustain an injury during the attack.

Because of the stress involved in being deprived of everything that is natural and important in captivity, orcas have been held responsible for hundreds of attacks, tens of injuries, and the deaths of four humans. Six incidents have occurred in the wild over a period of around 100 years (1910s – 2014), none of which proved fatal. Yet, within less than a fifth of that time (1991 – 2010), 82 aggressive incidents occurred in captivity, four of which proved fatal, at least 9 others causing serious injuries from torn ligaments to broken bones and internal bleeding.

One of the most infamous captive orca attacks occurred at SeaWorld San Diego in November 2006. Kasatka, a 17ft long, 29-year-old, female orca attacked Kenneth Peters – the marine park’s most experienced trainer. Peters was working with Kasatka during a Shamu Show and dived into the pool to perform a water work behavior. He reached a depth of 10-15ft and was waiting for Kasatka to touch his foot when he heard a loud distress vocalization. He later learned this loud call came from Kasatka’s almost-two-year-old calf, Kalia, who was calling for her mother whilst separated in a different pool. Upon hearing her daughter’s call, Kasatka turned on Peters and grabbed both of his feet in her jaws. She held him underwater for almost a minute, violently rag-dolling him beneath the surface, before slowly bringing him to the surface, spiraling upward and blowing bubbles as she rose.

Every time Peters’ colleagues slapped the water (a signal for Kasatka to return to the stage) she would only bite down on Peters harder. She responded the same way if Peters tried to pull his foot out of her mouth. Kasatka was keeping him out of reach of the other trainers and away from the sides of the pool. She then pulled him beneath the surface again, thrashed him around, and took him all the way to the bottom of the 36ft deep pool where she laid against him and held him there for around a minute. Once Peters had gone limp, Kasatka finally brought him to the surface again. She released Peters and he managed to make it over a net (which Kasatka also crossed, coming after Peters) and escaped the pool via the slide-out area. Kasatka had broken Peters’ left foot during the attack and he sustained multiple puncture wounds. Regardless, he escaped with his life. Watch the footage of the incident in its entirety below:

Kenneth Peters claims Kasatka’s “aggression had come as a total surprise”. The attack occurred as a result of Kalia’s distress call, who had been separated from her mother briefly so Kasatka could entertain an audience of around 500 people. According to SeaWorld’s own animal profiles, Kasatka finds “being separated from other whales/calf” aversive. As SeaWorld San Diego’s most experienced orca trainer, who had worked with Kasatka for many years, Peters would’ve been more than aware of this fact. Yet, he and his colleagues demonstrated a complete disregard for Kasatka’s triggers and he almost lost his life as a result.

TV Anime Scar on the Praeter New CM Announces January 8, 2021 Premiere on Animeism Block

    The official website for PROJECT SCARD: Praeter no Kizu (Scar on the Praeter), a sci-fi action TV anime series from Frontier Works' mixed-media franchise PROJECT SCARD, has posted a 30-second new CM to announce its premiere on MBS, TBS, and BS-TBS' "Animeism" programming block on January 8, 2021.

  The main story of the franchise is set in Tokyo's Akatsuki Special Ward, a planned special economic zone created by the government, and depicts the activities of Scard, who have "Divine Tattoo," the power of the divine beasts.

  It has developed drama CDs, character songs, and a web program hosted by its voice actors since November 2019, and this upcoming TV anime will tell a sequel story to the five-volume drama CD released from March to August 2020. Shingo Suzuki (K, Hand Shakers, W'z) serves as character designer/director on a script by Tamazou Yanagi (Hand Shakers, W'z), GoHands works on anime production.
